Electronic $K$ x rays emitted by muonic Ar atoms in the gas phase were observed using a superconducting transition-edge-sensor microcalorimeter. The high-precision energy spectra provided a clear signature of the presence of muonic atoms accompanied by a few electrons, which have never been observed before. One-, two-, and three-electron bound, i.e., H-like, He-like, and Li-like, muonic Ar atoms were identified from electronic $K$ x rays and hyper-satellite $K$ x rays. These $K$ x rays are emitted after the charge transfer process by the collisions with surrounding Ar atoms. With the aid of theoretical calculations, we confirmed that the peak positions are consistent with the x-ray energies from highly charged Cl ions, and the intensities reflecting deexcitation dynamics were successfully understood by taking into account the interaction between the muon and bound electrons.

We present computer simulations about the spatial and temporal evolution of a 1-MeV proton microbeam transmitted through an insulating macrocapillary with the length of 45 mm and with the inner diameter of 800 {\mu}m. The axis of the capillary was tilted to 1{\deg} relative to the axis of the incident beam, which ensured geometrical nontransparency. The simulation is based on the combination of stochastic (Monte Carlo) and deterministic methods. It involves (1) random sampling of the initial conditions, according to distributions generated by the widely used and freely available computer software packages, SRIM and WINTRAX, (2) the numerical solution of the governing equations for following the classical trajectory of the projectiles, and (3) the description of the field-driven charge migration on the surface and in the bulk of the insulator material. We found that our simulation describes reasonably all of our previous experimental observations, indicating the functionality and reliability of the applied model. In addition, we found that at different phases of the beam transmission, different atomic processes result in the evolution of the beam distribution. First, in a scattering phase, the multiple small angle atomic scattering dominates in the beam transmission, resulting in an outgoing beam into a wide angular range and in a wide energy window. Later, in a mixed phase, scattering and guiding happens simultaneously, with a continuously increasing contribution of guiding. Finally, in the phase of the stabilized, guided transmission, a quadrupolelike focusing effect is observed, i.e., the transmitted beam is concentrated into a small spot, and the transmitted protons keep their initial kinetic energy.

We present ab-initio calculations of the electronic differential energy transfer (DET) cross-sections for antiprotons with energies between $3$keV and $1$MeV interacting with helium. By comparison with simulations employing the mean-field description based on the single-active electron approximation we are able to identify electron correlation effects in the stopping and straggling cross sections. Most remarkably, we find that straggling exceeds the celebrated Bohr straggling limit when correlated shake-up processes are included.

We extend the semiclassical two-step model for strong-field ionization that describes quantum interference and accounts for the Coulomb potential beyond the semiclassical perturbation theory to the hydrogen molecule. In the simplest case of the molecule oriented along the polarization direction of a linearly polarized laser field, we predict significant deviations of the two-dimensional photoelectron momentum distributions and the energy spectra from the case of atomic hydrogen. Specifically, for the hydrogen molecule the electron energy spectrum falls off slower with increasing energy, and the holographic interference fringes are more pronounced than for the hydrogen atom at the same parameters of the laser pulse., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

We present an absolute extraction method of optical constants of metal from the measured reflection electron energy loss (REELS) spectra by using the recently developed reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) technique. The method is based on a direct physical modeling of electron elastic and electron inelastic scattering near the surface region where the surface excitation becomes important to fully describe the spectrum loss feature intensity in relative to the elastic peak intensity. An optimization procedure of oscillator parameters appeared in the energy loss function (ELF) for describing electron inelastic scattering due to the bulk- and surface-excitations was performed with the simulated annealing method by a successive comparison between the measured and Monte Carlo simulated REELS spectra. The ELF and corresponding optical constants of Fe were obtained from the REELS spectra measured at incident energies of 1000, 2000 and 3000 eV. The validity of the present optical data has been verified with the f- and ps-sum rules showing the accuracy and applicability of the present approach. We present a semiclassical two-step model for strong-field ionization that accounts for path interferences of tunnel-ionized electrons in the ionic potential beyond perturbation theory. Within the framework of a classical trajectory Monte-Carlo representation of the phase-space dynamics, the model employs the semiclassical approximation to the phase of the full quantum propagator in the exit channel. By comparison with the exact numerical solution of the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation for strong-field ionization of hydrogen, we show that for suitable choices of the momentum distribution after the first tunneling step, the model yields good quantitative agreement with the full quantum simulation. The two-dimensional photoelectron momentum distributions, the energy spectra, and the angular distributions are found to be in good agreement with the corresponding quantum results. Specifically, the model quantitatively reproduces the fan-like interference patterns in the low-energy part of the two-dimensional momentum distributions as well as the modulations in the photoelectron angular distributions., Comment: 31 pages, 7 figures

We have investigated the ionization of the H atom by intense few-cycle laser pulses, in particular the intra-pulse interference effects, and their dependence on the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of the laser pulse. In the final momentum distribution of the continuum electrons the imprint of two types of intra-pulse interference effects can be observed, namely the temporal and spatial interference. During the spatial interference electronic wave packets emitted at the same time, but following different paths interfere leading to an interference pattern measurable in the electron spectra. This can be also interpreted as the interference between a direct and a scattered wave, and the spatial interference pattern as the holographic mapping (HM) of the target. This HM pattern is strongly influenced by the carrier-envelope phase through the shape of the laser pulse. Here, we have studied how the shape of the HM pattern is modified by the CEP, and we have found an optimal CEP for the observation of HM.

We present the design and construction of our experimental setup for studying the transmission of proton microbeam through a single, cylindrical shape, macroscopic insulating capillary. We theoretically investigate the single and double ionization of the He atom by antiproton impact for projectile energies ranging from $3$~keV up to $1000$~keV. We obtain accurate total cross sections by directly solving the fully correlated two-electron time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation and by performing classical trajectory Monte-Carlo calculations. The obtained quantum-mechanical results are in excellent agreement with the available experimental data. Along with the total cross sections, we also present the first fully \textit{ab initio} doubly differential data for single ionization at 10 and 100~keV impact energies. In these differential cross sections we identify the binary-encounter peak along with the anticusp minimum. Furthermore, we also point out the importance of the post-collisional electron-projectile interaction at low antiproton energies which significantly suppresses electron emission in the forward direction.

Guiding of highly charged ions (HCI) through tilted capillaries promises to develop into a tool to efficiently collimate and focus low-energy ion beams to sub-micrometer size. One control parameter to optimize guiding is the residual electrical conductivity of the insulating material. Its strong (nearly exponential) temperature dependence is the key to transmission control and can be used to suppress transmission instabilities arising from large flux fluctuations of incident ions which otherwise would lead to Coulomb blocking of the capillary. We demonstrate the strong dependence of transmission of Ar$^{9+}$ ions through a single macroscopic glass capillary on temperature and ion flux. Results in the regime of dynamical equilibrium can be described by balance equations in the linear-response regime.

First time-resolved photoemission experiments employing attosecond streaking of electrons emitted by an XUV pump pulse and probed by a few-cycle NIR pulse found a time delay of about 100 attoseconds between photoelectrons from the conduction band and those from the 4f core level of tungsten. We present a microscopic simulation of the emission time and energy spectra employing a classical transport theory. Emission spectra and streaking images are well reproduced. Different contributions to the delayed emission of core electrons are identified: larger emission depth, slowing down by inelastic scattering processes, and possibly, energy dependent deviations from the free-electron dispersion. We find delay times near the lower bound of the experimental data.

We simulate the electron transmission through insulating Mylar (PET) capillaries. We show that the mechanisms underlying the recently discovered electron guiding are fundamentally different from those for ion guiding. Quantum reflection and multiple near-forward scattering rather than the self-organized charge-up are key to the transmission along the capillary axis irrespective of the angle of incidence. We find surprisingly good agreement with recent data. Our simulation suggests that electron guiding should also be observable for metallic capillaries.

The ionization of atomic hydrogen in intense laser fields is studied theoretically. The calculations were performed applying both quantummechanical and classical approaches. Treating the problem quantummechanically, the time dependent Schr\"odinger equation (TDSE) of our system was first transformed into a pseudo-momentum space and solved in this space iteratively. While neglecting the Coulomb potential during the solution of the TDSE we got the results in the Volkov approximation, in the first order solution we taken into account the Coulomb potential as perturbation. The classical calculations were performed within the framework of the classical trajectory Monte-Carlo (CTMC) method. The double differential ionization probabilities are calculated for different laser pulses and a reasonable agreement was found between the theories. Major differences can be observed in the angular distribution of electrons at low electron energies between classical and the quantummechanical approaches. At high electron energies the differences disappear, which indicates that the generation of low energy electrons is of quantum type, and it is strongly influenced by the Coulomb potential, while the production of high energy electrons is of classical type and it is less influenced by the Coulomb interaction. After a brief introduction to the NIST EBIT facility, we present the results of three different types of experiments that have been carried out there recently: EUV and visible spectroscopy in support of the microelectronics industry, laboratory astrophysics using an x-ray microcalorimeter, and charge exchange studies using extracted beams of highly charged ions., Comment: 10 pages

Recent experiments have demonstrated that highly charged ions can be guided through insulating nanocapillaries along the direction of the capillary axis for a surprisingly wide range of injection angles. Even more surprisingly, the transmitted particles remain predominantly in their initial charge state, thus opening the pathway to the construction of novel ion-optical elements without electric feedthroughs. We present a theoretical treatment of this self-organized guiding process. We develop a classical trajectory transport theory that relates the microscopic charge-up with macroscopic material properties. Transmission coefficients, angular spread of transmitted particles, and discharge characteristics of the target are investigated. Partial agreement with experiment is found.
