This methodological report on the research project "Recent Immigration Processes and Early Integration Trajectories in Germany" (ENTRA) provides information about the study's research design and data collection. The main objective of the ENTRA project was to collect data on recent immigrants in Germany, covering immigration and settlement dynamics, as well as their integration trajectories. The study consists of a two-wave panel survey of four different immigrant groups: Italians, Poles, Syrians, and Turks. Viewing integration as a mul-tidimensional process, we focused on different aspects of immigrant integration, including language skills and use, ethnic and national identities, ethnic boundaries, political participation, religious belonging and practices, social contacts and networks, educational attainment, labor market participation, and health. The panel study was designed as a multimodal survey that was administered in the national language of the respective immigrant groups. In total, 4,448 immigrants and refugees participated in the first survey wave, and longitudinal data of both panel waves is available for 3,366 cases.

How important were manufacturing and heavy industries to the economic integration of twentieth-century immigrants in Western societies? This article examines how macro-social change in Germany since the height of manufacturing has affected the socio-economic integration of male immigrants. We develop an analytical framework to assess how educational expansion among natives, deindustrialization, and the increasing importance of formal qualifications shape male immigrant-native gaps in labor-market outcomes over time. Empirically, we focus on first-generation male Turkish immigrants in Germany and use micro-census data spanning almost 40 years. Through a novel empirical quantification of key theoretical arguments concerning immigrant economic integration, we find growing inter-group differences between the late 1970s and mid-2000s (employment) and mid-2010s (incomes), respectively. The growth of differences between the immigrant and native income distributions was most pronounced in their respective bottom halves. Our analysis shows that these trends are linked to the increased importance of formal educational qualifications for individual labor-market success, to educational expansion in Germany, and to deindustrialization. Employment in Germany shifted away from middling positions in manufacturing, but while natives tended to move into better-paying positions, Turkish immigrants mainly shifted into disadvantaged service jobs. These results provide novel evidence for claims that the economic assimilation of less-skilled immigrants may become structurally harder in increasingly post-industrial societies. We conclude that structural change in host countries is an important, yet often overlooked, driver of immigrant socio-economic integration trajectories.

Der Forschungsbericht zur Repräsentativuntersuchung "Ausgewählte Migrantengruppen in Deutschland" (RAM 2015) enthält Erkenntnisse über vier große Gruppen von Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund. Hierfür wurden zwischen Juni bis September 2015 insgesamt 2.498 Personen interviewt, darunter 633 polnische, 632 rumänische, 614 türkische Staatsangehörige und 619 deutsche Staatsangehörige mit türkischem Migrationshintergrund. Der vorliegende Bericht liefert einen deskriptiven Überblick über ausgewählte Aspekte der Integration und Einstellungen der im Jahr 2015 befragten vier Gruppen., The research report on the representative survey entitled "Selected groups of migrants in Germany" (RAM 2015) contains information on four large groups of people with a migration background. This involved interviewing a total of 2,498 people between June and September 2015, 633 of whom were Polish, 632 were Romanian and 614 were Turkish nationals, as well as 619 German nationals with a Turkish migration background. This report provides a descriptive overview of selected aspects of integration and attitudes among the four groups of people who were surveyed in 2015.

Older first‐generation migrants living in Europe, particularly Turkish migrants, feel relatively lonely, which indicates social exclusion. Social embeddedness within the family, particularly parent‐child relationships, can alleviate loneliness for older migrants, but such relationships can also be ambivalent, which may not prevent loneliness altogether. Earlier research indicates that Turkish migrants in Germany report high quality relationships with their children and high levels of social support exchanges within the family; however, some still report disappointing aspects of the relationship with their children, such as feeling disrespected. To better understand these contradictory findings, this article focuses on various aspects of parent‐child relationships that may explain loneliness among older Turkish migrants in Germany. Moreover, the article considers whether filial expectations can be potential sources of intergenerational conflict that may explain higher levels of loneliness among older Turkish migrants. Using the Generations and Gender Survey with 606 first‐generation Turkish respondents aged 50 and above, findings show that having low satisfying relationships with children and not having adult co‐residing children is associated with more loneliness. Turkish migrants with higher filial expectations feel lonelier when they have good perceived health, and less lonely when they have bad perceived health. These findings indicate that especially healthy older Turkish migrants may have unfulfilled expectations regarding parent‐child relationships, which adds to their loneliness, while parents with bad health experience solidarity, which lowers their loneliness. This shows that both intergenerational solidarity and conflict influence loneliness among older Turkish migrants.

This paper compares the partnership arrangements of Turkish and Ethnic German immigrants (i.e., return migrants from Ethnic German communities from predominantly Eastern European countries), the two largest migrant groups in Germany, and native Germans. Most existing analyses of migrants' partnerships focus on intermarriage, marriage formation, or union dissolution. We know only a little, however, about the prevalence of non-marital living arrangements. Given that single person households and cohabitation are widespread phenomena mainly in post-materialist societies, analyzing whether immigrants engage in these behaviors sheds light on potential adaptation processes. The analyses are based on the German Microcensus of the years 2009 and 2013, with a focus on adults in the 18–40 age group. First, we present descriptive findings on the prevalence of partnership arrangements of immigrants and native Germans. Second, we estimate cross-sectional regressions with the partnership arrangement as the outcome variable in order to control for compositional differences between immigrant groups with respect to education. Our results show that while the vast majority of first-generation immigrants are married, the share of married natives is considerably smaller. Living in an independent household without a partner and cohabitation are rare phenomena among immigrants. By contrast, about one in seven natives is cohabiting and more than one quarter is living in an independent household without a partner. The most prevalent partnership living arrangement of the Turkish second generation is living in the parental household without a partner. These results are robust after controlling for education, age, and year in the multiple regression analysis.

What factors shape immigrants' worries about becoming targets of ethnic harassment? This is an important question to ask, but most previous studies restricted their focus to the microlevel only. By contrast, few if any studies examined the possible macrolevel antecedents driving harassment-related worries among immigrants. This study aims to help fill this gap. Focusing on a 19-years period from 1986 to 2004 in Germany, we apply multilevel regression modeling techniques to repeated cross-sectional survey data collected among immigrants of Greek, Italian, Spanish, Turkish, and (ex-) Yugoslavian origin, linked with contextual characteristics. Our central finding is that German citizens' anti-immigrant prejudice is the key driver of longitudinal differences in immigrants' harassment-related worries. This association holds net of rival variables, such as fluctuations in media attention to ethnic harassment, as well as across all immigrant groups under study. These results bring us one important step further toward a better understanding of interethnic relations between immigrants and host society members.

Based on a field experiment conducted in Germany between October 2014 and October 2015, this article focuses on the disadvantages associated with the presence of a foreign accent in the early hiring process, when applicants call in response to a job advertisement to ask whether the position is still available. We examine whether a foreign accent influences employers’ behaviors via productivity considerations and/or whether foreign-accented speech is related to statistical discrimination or tastes among employers or customers that translate into differential treatment. To address these processes, we supplement our field-experimental data with information on job and firm characteristics from the texts of vacancy announcements and advertising companies’ homepages, on labor supply from the Federal Employment Agency, and on anti-immigrant attitudes from the German General Social Survey. Results suggest that while calling with a Turkish name did not result in a lower rate of positive replies, this rate was reduced for candidates who called with a Turkish accent. Turkish-accented applicants were told more often than the advertised position was already filled. Our findings suggest that the difference in response rates was not due to productivity considerations related to how well individuals understood foreign-accented speakers. Instead, results support the notion that the observed disadvantages were linked to discrimination based on employers’ ethnic tastes. While we found no indications pointing to the relevance of customer tastes or statistical discrimination, we cannot rule out these processes altogether. Our findings demonstrate that language cues can be more relevant than applicants’ names in shaping employers’ initial responses. They, thereby, highlight the need to consider multiple ethnic cues and different stages of the hiring process.

The southern parts of Yugoslavia, especially Macedonia, experienced massive emigration by non-Slavic Muslims in the 1950s after an agreement was concluded between Yugoslavia and Turkey in 1953. The movement raises questions of ethnic belonging and policy towards minorities in socialist Yugoslavia, especially regarding the Albanian population in Kosovo. It also raises questions regarding the entanglement of (migration) policy and emigration and the character of state intervention in an on-going emigration process. Thus, the author’s aim is to analyse the pillars of migration policy, the legal and regulatory framework as well as the extent, causes and consequences of state intervention on emigration processes to Turkey. The author further questions the emigration factors and their ethno-political dimensions, also examining how the mass emigration of Muslims influenced different fields of society in the region of origin as well as the Muslim lifeworld in the region.

Background: Smoking behaviour among immigrants is assumed to converge to that of the host country’s majority population with increasing duration of stay. We compared smoking prevalence among Turkish immigrants residing in two different countries (Germany (DE)/the Netherlands (NL)) between and within countries by time spent in Turkey and DE/NL. Methods: The German 2009 micro-census and the Dutch POLS database (national survey, 1997–2004) were analysed. An interaction variable with dichotomised length of stay (LOS) in Turkey (age: 0-17; 18+) and categorised LOS in the host country (immigration year: 1979 and earlier, 1980-1999, 2000-2009; the latter only for Germany) was generated. Age standardised smoking prevalences and sex-specific logistic regression models were calculated. Results: 6,517 Turkish participants were identified in Germany, 2,106 in the Netherlands. Age-standardised smoking prevalences were higher among Turkish immigrants in the Netherlands compared to those in Germany: 62.3% vs. 53.1% (men/lower education); 30.6% vs. 23.0% (women/lower education). A similar trend was observed for the majority population of both countries. The chance of being a smoker was lower among Turkish men with short LOS in Turkey and middle LOS in Germany/the Netherlands compared to those with short LOS in Turkey and long LOS in Germany/the Netherlands (NL: OR = 0.57[95% CI = 0.36-0.89]; DE: OR = 0.73[95% CI = 0.56-0.95]). Contrary to that, the chance of being a smoker was higher among Turkish men with long LOS in Turkey and middle LOS in Germany/the Netherlands compared to those with long LOS in Turkey and long LOS in Germany/the Netherlands (NL: OR = 1.35[95% CI = 0.79-2.33]; DE: OR = 1.44[95% CI = 1.03-2.02]). Den Jugendlichen türkischer Herkunft bieten sich dadurch Möglichkeiten, das Stigma des Ausländers abzustreifen und durch die bewusst gelebte Zugehörigkeit zum Islam - durch Konzepte islamischer Lebensführung - Zugang zu gesamtgesellschaftlichen Diskursen zu erlangen. Over the past five to six decades, oral history has become a complex and diverse tool, not only for uncovering and analysing individual and collective patterns of memory but also to inscribe them into public historical narratives. In the wake of the decline of the mining industry in the Ruhr region, local history workshops, academic historians, filmmakers, and museum practitioners began to construe miners and mining communities as historical subjects from the bottom up. Throughout this time, personal narrations played an increasingly important role as both a source of research and a tool for public historical representations. Using the case study of the Ruhr area, this article deals with the functions of public oral history narrations about the region’s mining past. It will particularly address the question of how the work and life stories of Turkish immigrant labourers, officially labelled as "guest workers", have been represented in regional historical culture. To what extent did they become narrative agents in the Ruhr's historiography, from a democratic and participatory "history from below" to an increasingly institutionalised approach in public history?

This article examines the hospitality practices of pro-migrant civil society organisations in Istanbul. Drawing from qualitative interviews, we focus on intersecting gendered, professionalised and faith-based aspects of pro-migrant activities and explore the ways that politically and morally charged ambivalences of hospitality practices are articulated and negotiated. Moreover, by contextualising Turkey’s religious and geopolitical particularity as a gatekeeper of Europe, we work with Derrida’s concept of plural laws to investigate hospitality practices towards refugees in Istanbul. Civil actors’ intentions and attempts to be good citizens, Muslims, and care providers expose the intimate aspects of hospitality – a segue into discourses of displaced subjects’ (gendered) deservingness. By portraying how macro–micro, global–local and public–private relations condition hospitality practices, we observe how globalisation is lived intimately, influencing perceptions of deservingness and the prioritisation of displaced subjects’ need., This research is a part of my project Cartographies of Hospitality funded by Wallenberg Foundation.

Der Beitrag diskutiert anhand von (nicht repräsentativen) Erhebungsdaten sowie amtlichen Daten den steigenden Bildungserfolg unter Türkeistämmigen und die transnationale Orientierung von türkeistämmigen Studierenden und Akademiker*innen in Deutschland. Die Untersuchungsgruppe zeigt eine ausgeprägte Bleibeabsicht in Deutschland bei gleichzeitig zum Teil intensiven grenzüberschreitenden sozialen Verbindungen in die Türkei.

What motivates conventional and unconventional participation in the political realm? Specifically, what are the facilitators and constraints of political participation in the views of Turkish migrants? The present study explored these conditions using semi-structured interviews with a small number of university students of Turkish descent in Germany, as these may be more likely to become spokespersons of the Turkish people in Germany than other members of their ethnic minority in-group. The interviewees draw attention to characteristics of different kinds of political activities, linking them to a lack of trustworthiness, frustration, disappointment, and reflection. Most of these factors can be related to rational actor approaches of political behavior; hence, the findings are discussed with respect to rational choice theory and with regard to the importance of sociopolitical and emotional integration of Turkish migrants. The role of political trust is discussed as that of a potential moderating force in the facilitation of political participation.

Existing research found strong and convincing evidence of ethnic discrimination in housing markets in almost all Western countries (Pager & Shepherd, 2008). This also holds for Germany, where particularly applicants with Turkish or Arabic names face severe discrimination. In large German cities applicants with Turkish names get up to 16 percentage points fewer responses than applicants with German names (Auspurg, Hinz, & Schmid, 2017). However, almost all of these studies look at "traditional" housing markets, where a landlord rents a flat to a family or individuals. Another segment of the housing market is mostly ignored, even though it has become increasingly common: Shared housing. About five million Germans are currently living in shared flats (Institut für Demoskopie Allensbach, 2017, p. 12). Discrimination in this market likely differs from other housing markets because of differences in the recruiting process and differences in the rationales and composition of tenants.

Predicting cognitive politicization variables (i.e. political interest and internal political efficacy) often relies on the same models that predict political behavior. However, social psychology researchers have discovered further determinants, in particular with regard to minority groups: collective identities, which may be moderated or mediated by collective maltreatment and perceived collective efficacy. Therefore, this article considers these variables as predictors of cognitive politicization. Following this line of research, it may thus be assumed that both an ethno-cultural identification with the in-group as well as a national identification with the country of residence positively relate to cognitive politicization with respect to minority groups. A dual identification with both the in-group and the country of residence should be a positive predictor of these variables, whereas a separatist identification as member of the in-group but non-identification with the country of residence should be a negative predictor. These hypotheses are examined using an online panel sample of Turkish migrants in Germany. Although a separatist identification yields negative effects, the other hypotheses are not supported. Conversely, identification with Germany shows negative effects on both criteria. The findings are discussed with particular respect to the importance of sociopolitical integration of migrants.

This article critically discusses how Turkish migrants as an established migrant group have interpreted and acted on the arrival of Syrian refugees in Berlin from 2015 onwards and whether their responses have resulted in new spaces in which new contestations and/or solidarities emerge. To this end, it focuses on the processes and the ways in which established groups (re-)articulate their urban citizenship and belonging to a particular urban space in relation to newcomers. Building on the analytical framework of relational and agency-centered articulation of urban citizenship and drawing on research data collected in the Kreuzberg and Neukölln neighborhoods of Berlin, the analysis has two main findings. Firstly, Turkish migrants have been involved in solidarity activities and contribute to a more inclusive urban citizenship regarding Syrian refugees. At the same time, they perceive Syrian refugees as a threat to their standing in the city and their right to the usage of urban space. This results in a more defensive urban citizenship against the refugees. Secondly, the unequal power relations and local, national and transitional dynamics act as intervening factors shaping Turkish migrants' responses to Syrian refugees and the process of urban citizenship formation., Dieser Artikel diskutiert kritisch, wie türkische Migranten als etablierte Gruppe ab 2015 die Ankunft syrischer Flüchtlinge in Berlin wahrgenommen und darauf reagiert haben und ob durch ihre Reaktionen neue Räume der Auseinandersetzung und/oder Solidaritäten entstanden sind. Zu diesem Zweck werden die Prozesse und die Art und Weise untersucht, in der etablierte Gruppen ihre "urban citizenship" und ihre Zugehörigkeit zu einem bestimmten urbanen Raum gegenüber Neuankömmlingen artikulieren. Aufbauend auf dem analytischen Konzept der relationalen und akteurzentrierten Artikulation von "urban citizenship" und Forschungsdaten aus den Berliner Stadtteilen Kreuzberg und Neukölln kommt die Studie zu zwei Hauptergebnissen. Erstens waren türkische Migranten in Solidaritätsaktionen eingebunden und haben zu einer integrativeren "urban citizenship" in Bezug auf syrische Flüchtlinge beigetragen. Gleichzeitig haben sie syrische Flüchtlinge als Bedrohung für ihr Ansehen in der Stadt und ihr Recht auf Nutzung des städtischen Raums wahrgenommen. Dies führte zu einer defensiveren "urban citizenship" gegenüber den Flüchtlingen. Zweitens wirken die ungleichen Machtverhältnisse und die lokale, nationale und transnationale Dynamik als intervenierende Faktoren, die die Reaktion türkischer Migranten auf syrische Flüchtlinge und den Prozess der Bildung von "urban citizenship" beeinflussen.

Benachteiligung von Türken auf dem Kölner Wohnungsmarkt kann viele Gründe haben. In einer Vorstudie untersuchten wir mögliche Gründe, die Vermieter gegen Angehörige ethnischer Minderheiten vorbringen könnten. Darauf aufbauend wurden in einem verdeckten Feldexperiment entsprechende Gegenmaßnahmen erprobt. Mit einer Bitte um Besichtigungstermine wurden insgesamt 384 E-Mails an N = 96 Anbieter (Vermieter, Wohnungsmakler) verschickt. Jeweils eine der vier E-Mails pro Studienteilnehmer war von einem vermeintlich Deutschen, die anderen drei E-Mails waren verschiedene E-Mail-Vignetten angeblich türkischer Bewerber. Neben ethnischer Diskriminierung im Raum Köln (geringerer Antwortwahrscheinlichkeit, seltenere Besichtigungszusagen) konnte auch die grundsätzliche Wirksamkeit individueller Gegenmaßnahmen durch E-Mail-Inhalt und -Länge belegt werden., Many reasons may justify landlords' discrimination against Turks on Cologne's apartment rental market. A pretest surveyed possible concerns landlords might have to put ethnic minorities at a disadvantage. We tested the effectiveness of corresponding countermeasures in the main study. We surveyed N = 96 participants (landlords and estate agents) with a total of 384 e-mails, asking for inspection dates. One of the four e-mails each participant received was from an alleged German. The other three e-mails were from alleged Turkish applicants. Apart from confirming a bias in line with ethnical discrimination, there was evidence for the efficacy of countermeasures.

This article aims to present a picture of Turkish journalism in German exile. By Turkish journalism, I refer to the production and circulation of news about Turkey, in Turkish and for a Turkish-speaking audience - primarily those living in Turkey. By German exile, I mean journalists who have migrated from Turkey since 2010 due to the country’s increasingly oppressive political climate, which has made journalism a dangerous profession there. Under-standing news in this context as the outcome of processes of transnational transfer of knowledge and experience from one regime to another, I ask how dissident Turkish journalists currently living in exile in Germany practise their profession from a distance, and what tools they use to critically engage with the overall political situation in Turkey. For this project, I have been carrying out ethnographic research in Berlin since November 2018. This research stands at the intersection of the anthropology of journalism and transnational migration. In the light of mapping the journalism scene in Berlin through this filter, I anchor historical foundations of the current migrant media scene where paths cross each other to understand their political references and to situate them in the context of Turkish-German migration. Then, I discuss the process of project-based journalism, by exploring the challenges and opportunities offered by the conditions within which journalists can practise their profession from a physical and temporal distance. Reviewing the choice of the audience that journalists aim to target, I also show how they meet a need for community media that had remained unaddressed in the Turkish-German context, in connection to the difficulty of establishing solidarities among themselves. Finally, I discuss recent debates on what journalism should be - or what happens to the expertise when activism and profession collide.

In der öffentlichen Debatte wird oft behauptet, dass eine hohe Zahl von Türkeistämmigen Deutschland zeitweise oder dauerhaft verlassen würde. Dabei handele es sich vor allem um junge und qualifizierte Personen, die ihre Schulzeit und Ausbildung in Deutschland absolviert haben. Zudem weisen Umfragen auf eine hohe Abwanderungsbereitschaft in der türkeistämmigen Bevölkerung Deutschlands hin.

Seit dem Jahr 2000 gibt es im deutschen Staatsangehörigkeitsrecht die sogenannte Optionsregelung, die in Deutschland geborene Kinder ausländischer Eltern betrifft. Diese erhalten bei Geburt im Inland die deutsche Staatsangehörigkeit, besitzen aber parallel dazu meist auch die Staatsangehörigkeit ihrer Eltern. Da im deutschen Recht Mehrstaatigkeit im Grundsatz vermieden werden soll, unterliegen diese Personen bislang der sogenannten Optionspflicht. Das bedeutet, sie müssen sich zwischen ihrem 18. und ihrem 23. Geburtstag für eine Staatsangehörigkeit entscheiden. Aufgrund einer Übergangsregelung für Kinder, die im Jahr 2000 bereits geboren waren, laufen seit dem Jahr 2008 die entsprechenden Verwaltungsverfahren. Von ihnen sind inzwischen mehr als 20.000 junge Erwachsene bundesweit betroffen, zwei Drittel von ihnen stammen aus türkischen Elternhäusern.

Der Jahresbericht gibt einen Überblick über die Arbeitsschwerpunkte des Forschungszentrums Migration, Integration und Asyl im Jahr 2018. Es werden sowohl laufende und abgeschlossene Forschungsprojekte als auch Publikationen, Veranstaltungen, Vorträge sowie das mediale Angebot näher vorgestellt. Hervorzuheben ist zunächst die bereits laufende mehrjährige IAB-BAMF-SOEP-Befragung von Personen, die in den letzten Jahren nach Deutschland geflüchtet sind, die gemeinsam mit dem Institut für Arbeitsmarkt- und Berufsforschung (IAB) und dem Deutschen Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung (DIW/SOEP) durchgeführt wird. Mit den Befragungen in 2016 und 2017 steht nun der zentrale Datensatz der wissenschaftlichen Öffentlichkeit zur Verfügung, mithilfe dessen sich Fragen zur Integration der in den letzten Jahren nach Deutschland gekommenen schutzsuchenden Menschen beantworten lassen. Neben der Fluchtmigration haben aber auch andere Aspekte aus dem Bereich Migration und Integration wieder eine größere Bedeutung in der Arbeit des Forschungszentrums erlangt. Die dabei behandelten Fragen reichten vom Familiennachzug und den Arbeitsmarktpotenzialen in dieser Gruppe von Zugewanderten, der Arbeitsmarktintegration von Drittstaatsangehörigen bis hin zu möglichen Unterschieden im Integrationsstand von Deutschen mit türkischem Migrationshintergrund im Vergleich zu Personen mit türkischer Staatsangehörigkeit. Hinzu kommt das Forschungsprojekt "Evaluation der Integrationskurse (EvIk)", das die Wirkungsweise der Integrationskurse mit besonderem Fokus auf die Teilnehmendengruppe der Geflüchteten erforscht. Zudem hat die wissenschaftliche Begleitung der "Beratungsstelle Radikalisierung" in 2018 große Fortschritte erzielt. Ein Schwerpunkt war hierbei der Aufbau eines Netzwerks wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter bei den zivilgesellschaftlichen Partnern vor Ort. Auch wurden mit den Partnern im Europäischen Migrationsnetzwerk (EMN) mehrere Studien erarbeitet, die Visaliberalisierungen, in

Von den 7,8 Millionen Frauen mit Migrationshintergrund haben im Jahr 2009 etwa 4,3 Millionen die deutsche und 3,5 Millionen eine ausländische Staatsangehörigkeit. Der Anteil von Frauen mit Migrationshintergrund an der weiblichen Gesamtbevölkerung beträgt etwa 19 Prozent. Frauen mit türkischem Migrationshintergrund stellen dabei mit ca. 1,2 Millionen den größten Anteil (15 Prozent). Weitere fünf Prozent der Frauen haben einen polnischen, vier Prozent einen italienischen und drei Prozent einen russischen Migrationshintergrund. Bei den Frauen mit Migrationshintergrund befinden sich 53 Prozent im reproduktiven Alter (15 bis 49 Jahre), bei den Frauen ohne Migrationshintergrund sind es 43 Prozent., There are common features as well as differences between the fertility of migrant and non-migrant women. Das Working Paper 11 liefert erste Ergebnisse zu zentralen Merkmalen der 4.576 Befragten der Repräsentativuntersuchung "Ausgewählte Migrantengruppen in Deutschland 2006/2007" (RAM). Ende 2006 und im Jahr 2007 wurden dabei schon mindestens ein Jahr in Deutschland lebende Personen der fünf größten ausländischen Nationalitätengruppen von Infratest Sozialforschung, München, im Auftrag des Bundesamts für Migration und Flüchtlinge zu einem breiten Spektrum von Integrationsaspekten befragt. Betrachtet werden beispielsweise Unterschiede und Gemeinsamkeiten nach Altersgruppen, der Aufenthaltsdauer in Deutschland, der Schulbildung, der beruflichen Situation, der Sprache, der Wohnsituation, der familiären Situation, der sozialen Kontakte, der Religion oder der Bindung an Deutschland und an das Herkunftsland. Erste Ergebnisse zeigen bereits, dass sich eine Reihe von Unterschieden zwischen den fünf Gruppen ergeben.

Für die große Zustimmung, die die türkische Partei für Gerechtigkeit und Entwicklung (AKP) und Präsident Recep Tayyip Erdoğan von türkischen Wählern im Ausland erhalten, gibt es sowohl materielle als auch emotionale Ursachen. Es scheint, als hätten sozioökonomische Veränderungen und wahrgenommene Verbesserungen in der Qualität der staatlichen Insti­tutionen - in der Türkei und auch in Deutschland - zu einem positiven Image der türkischen Regierung beigetragen. Ein Faktor, der die Wahlunterstützung der türkischen Migranten und ihrer Kinder zugunsten der AKP erklärt, ist ein Gefühl des Stolzes, das aus der Wahrnehmung einer "starken Türkei" unter der Regierung von Präsident Erdoğan resultiert. Ein weiterer Grund für den hohen Stimmenanteil, den die AKP verbuchen kann, ist offenbar auch die Angst vor dem Verlust sozialer und politischer Errungenschaften. Da sich ihr Interesse an der Migrantenbevölkerung mit ihren außen- und innenpolitischen Ambitionen deckt, wird die türkische Regierung an ihrem stark identitätsbezogenen Ansatz vermutlich auch in Zukunft festhalten. Hinzu kommt, dass durch die sich verschärfende türkische Wirt­schaftskrise mit einiger Wahrscheinlichkeit auch der Bedarf an Rück­überweisungen steigen wird. Es ist von entscheidender Bedeutung, zwischen den Bemühungen der tür­kischen Regierung, türkische Migranten und ihre im Ausland geborenen Kinder für ihre innen- und außenpolitischen Zwecke zu instrumentalisieren, und der Forderung der Migranten nach politischer Interessenvertre­tung und gleichberechtigter Anerkennung zu unterscheiden. Im Forschungsprojekt "Integrationsverlauf von Integrationskursteilnehmern (Integrationspanel)" wird die Wirksamkeit und Nachhaltigkeit der Integrationskurse untersucht. Zur Ergänzung der quantitativen Befragungen wurden nun qualitative leitfadengestützte Interviews mit russisch- und türkischstämmigen Integrationskursteilnehmerinnen durchgeführt. Das Working Paper zeigt auf, welchen Einfluss die Teilnahme am Integrationskurs auf die weitere Integration der Teilnehmerinnen (kulturelle, strukturelle, soziale und emotionale Integration ) hat. Interessant in diesem Zusammenhang ist auch die Selbsteinschätzung der befragten Frauen hinsichtlich ihrer eigenen Integration und was sie unter Integration verstehen. Die Bedeutung einer möglichen Verpflichtung zur Kursteilnahme wird ebenfalls beleuchtet. Weiterhin wird die Frage behandelt, ob und wie sehr die Teilnahme am Kurs über eine Verbesserung der Deutschkenntnisse zu einer Veränderung des Selbstbilds, einer Stärkung des eigenen Selbstwertgefühls und eventuell auch einer Emanzipation oder Übernahme neuer Rollen führt ("Empowerment")., In the research project "Integration process of integration course participants (integration panel)" the effectivity and sustainability of integration courses is examined. To supplement the quantitative survey, qualitative guideline-based interviews with female integration course participants of Russian and Turkish origin were conducted. The Working Paper points out the influence which the participation in the integration course has on further integration of the female participants (cultural, structural, social and emotional integration). In that context, the self-perception of the interviewed women, regarding their own integration and their understanding of integration, is of special interest. The effect of a potential obligatory participation in the courses is also examined. Furthermore, it is being discussed, if the improvement of the German language throughout the participation in the course causes a change in self-perception, a strengthening of self-confidence or eventually also an emancipation or even an adaption of new roles ("Empowerment").

Erkenntnisse aus der Repräsentativuntersuchung "Ausgewählte Migrantengruppen in Deutschland" (RAM 2015). In diesem Working Paper werden Unterschiede beim Stand der Integration innerhalb der heterogenen Bevölkerung mit türkischem Migrationshintergrund untersucht. Dabei werden erstens Personen mit deutscher Staatsangehörigkeit mit den Personen mit türkischer Staatsangehörigkeit verglichen. Zweitens wird bezüglich der Zugehörigkeit zur ersten und der zweiten Generation der Zuwanderer unterschieden. Als "erste Generation" werden diejenigen Personen zusammengefasst, die im Ausland geboren und nach Deutschland zugewandert sind. Mit "zweite Generation" sind jene Personen gemeint, die in Deutschland geboren wurden, bei denen aber mindestens ein Elternteil im Ausland geboren wurde. Die Studie analysiert den Stand der Integration unter anderem in Bezug auf Arbeitsmarkt und Bildung sowie soziale Teilhabe und Identifikation. Darüber hinaus liefert die Studie Erkenntnisse zur Diskriminierungswahrnehmung und zur Auswirkung von Mediennutzung.

Since the failed coup attempt by parts of the Turkish military against President Erdogan in the summer of 2016, the Turkish government has suspended more than 100,000 civil servants on the pretext that they had planned a coup. Out of fear of persecution and arbitrary arrests, around 21,000 Turkish citizens have since applied for asylum in Germany. Many of them found refuge in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). At the same time, communities of people with a migration background related to Turkey have been living in this federal state, particularly in the large cities, since the 1960s. This Working Paper examines how members of both groups in NRW perceive each other and how they interact with each other in everyday life, which conflicts arise, and how the political developments in Turkey affect these processes. The study shows that Turkish refugees experience solidarity and sympathy from people with a Turkey-related migration background and their organisations, but also encounter some hostility from them in everyday life. This reflects the strong polarisation within the communities of people with a Turkey-related migration background in NRW since 2016, which the Working Paper also addresses. The author advocates a differentiated, empirically-based approach to the subject area and strongly warns against generalisations. Approaches to conflict resolution must incorporate the complexity of actors and interactions, as well as the diversity of opinions and positions within communities with a connection to Turkey.

This book examines the construction and articulation of diasporic cultural identity among the Turkish working-class youth in Kreuzberg (Little Istanbul), Berlin. This work primarily suggests that the contemporary diasporic consciousness is built on two antithetical axes: particularism and universalism. The presence of this dichotomy derives from the unresolved historical dialogues that the diasporic youths experience between continuity and disruption, essence and positionality, tradition and translation, homogeneity and difference, past and future, 'here' and 'there', 'roots' and 'routes', and local and global.

Wird über Krankheit von Migranten und Migrantinnen gesprochen, so werden schnell Kategorisierungen von Kulturdifferenz und Fremdheitserfahrung herangezogen. Um kulturalistische und verallgemeinernde Objektivierungen zu überwinden, werden in der Studie anhand biographisch narrativer Interviews seelische, körperliche und sozialweltliche Phänomene im Kontext von Migrationserfahrungen untersucht. Als "medizinische Fälle" diagnostizierte türkische Menschen wurden gebeten, ihre Lebensgeschichte zu erzählen. Diese biographischen Alltagserzählungen mit ihren Interpretationen der Migrationserfahrungen und des Krankwerdens in Deutschland stehen im Zentrum der Studie. Die eigene Lebenspraxis wird als biographische Arbeit bei der Balancierung lebens- und familiengeschichtlicher Erfahrungen und von gesellschaftlichen Anforderungen gewürdigt. Folgenden Fragen geht die Studie nach: In welche lebensgeschichtliche und gesellschaftliche Konstellation sind die Erfahrungen von Krankheit eingebettet? Welche Rolle spielt die individuelle Migrationsgeschichte? Wie sprechen Menschen über ihr eigenes Leben und die Welt und wie wird dieses Sprechen durch die Einflüsse im Herkunfts- sowie im Migrationsland beeinflusst?

Zwar ist in den letzten Jahren der Konsens gewachsen, dass Deutschland ein Einwanderungsland ist, aber der Blick auf Migranten hat sich dadurch nicht wesentlich geändert. Auf der Basis des Paradigmas kultureller Differenz gelten sie nach wie vor als die Anderen, die Fremden. Doch die Fremdheit der Migranten als eine Prämisse der Debatte über Einwanderung in Deutschland verstellt den Blick für eine sehr vielfältige und gar nicht unbedingt fremde Lebenswirklichkeit. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes nun stellen diese Prämisse in Frage. Sie untersuchen, wie in den Diskursen von Gesellschaft, Politik und Wissenschaft die kulturelle Differenz vor allem der Einwanderer aus der Türkei immer wieder festgeschrieben wird und diskutieren anhand neuer theoretischer Zugänge alternative Perspektiven. Damit bereichert der Band die gegenwärtige Diskussion um Migration um notwendige innovative Positionen.
