Abstract

We study when an arrangement of axis-aligned rectangles can be transformed into an arrangement of axis-aligned squares in $\mathbb{R}^2$ while preserving its structure. We found a counterexample to the conjecture of J. Klawitter, M. N\"ollenburg and T. Ueckerdt whether all arrangements without crossing and side-piercing can be squared. Our counterexample also works in a more general case when we only need to preserve the intersection graph and we forbid side-piercing between squares. We also show counterexamples for transforming box arrangements into combinatorially equivalent hypercube arrangements. Finally, we introduce a linear program deciding whether an arrangement of rectangles can be squared in a more restrictive version where the order of all sides is preserved.

Abstract

Due to the lack of specific agonists and antagonists the role of adenosine receptor subtypes with respect to their effect on the insulin secretory system is not well investigated. The A1 receptor may be linked to different 2nd messenger systems, i.e. cAMP, K+- and 45Ca2+ channel activity. Partial A1 receptor agonists are going to be developed in order to improve diabetes (increase in insulin sensitivity, lowering of FFA and triglycerides). In this study newly synthesized selective A1 receptor agonists and antagonists were investigated thereby integrating three parameters, insulin release (RIA), 45Ca2+ uptake and 86Rb+ efflux (surrogate for K+ efflux) of INS-1 cells, an insulin secretory cell line. The presence of A1-receptors was demonstrated by Western blotting. The receptor nonselective adenosine analogue NECA (5 -N-ethylcarboxyamidoadenosine) at high concentration (10 µM) had no effect on insulin release and 45Ca2+ uptake which could be interpreted as the sum of effects mediated by mutual antagonistic adenosine receptor subtypes. However, an inhibitory effect mediated by A1 receptor agonism was detected at 10 nM NECA and could be confirmed by adding the A1 receptor antagonist PSB-36 (1-butyl-8-(3-noradamantyl)-3-(3-hydroxy-propyl)xanthine). NECA inhibited 86Rb+ efflux which, however, did not fit with the simultaneous inhibition of insulin secretion. The selective A1 receptor agonist CHA (N6-cyclohexyladenosine) inhibited insulin release; the simultaneously increased Ca2+ uptake (nifedipine dependent) and inhibition of 86Rb+ efflux did not fit the insulin release data. The CHA effect (even the maximum effect at 50 µM) can be increased by 10 µM NECA indicating that CHA and NECA have nonspecific and physiologically non-relevant effects on 86Rb+ efflux in addition to their A1-receptor interaction. Since PSB-36 did not influence the NECA-induced inhibition of 86Rb+ efflux, the NECA effect is not mediated by potassium channel-linked A1 receptors. The nonselective adenosine receptor antagonist caffeine increased insulin release which was reversed by CHA as expected when hypothesizing that both act via A1 receptors in this case. In conclusion, stimulation of A1 receptors by receptor selective and nonselective compounds reduced insulin release which is not coupled to opening of potassium channels (86Rb+ efflux experiments) or inhibition of calcium channels (45Ca2+ uptake experiments). It may be expected that of all pleiotropic 2nd messengers, the cAMP system (not tested here) is predominant for A1 receptor effects and the channel systems (K+ and Ca2+) are of minor importance and do not contribute to insulin release though being coupled to the receptor in other tissues.

Abstract

To determine whether adjustment of myocardial blood flow (MBF), myocardial oxygen consumption (MVO2) and myocardial substrate uptake (MSU) to acute arterial hypoxia is influenced by training effects on the heart, 7 trained and 7 untrained healthy individuals were investigated. MBF (argon method), MVO2and MSU of glucose, lactate and free fatty acids were measured at rest during normoxia and two different stages of acute arterial hypoxia: a) 12.82 vol% O2; b) 8.74 vol% O2. Measurements were carried out during hemodynamic and respiratory steady state conditions.

Abstract

Exploring the relationships between genes and brain circuitry can be accelerated by joint analysis of heterogeneous datasets from 3D imaging data, anatomical data, as well as brain networks at varying scales, resolutions, and modalities. Generating an integrated view, beyond the individual resources' original purpose, requires the fusion of these data to a common space, and a visualization that bridges the gap across scales. However, despite ever expanding datasets, few platforms for integration and exploration of this heterogeneous data exist. To this end, we present the BrainTACO (Brain Transcriptomic And Connectivity Data) resource, a selection of heterogeneous, and multi-scale neurobiological data spatially mapped onto a common, hierarchical reference space, combined via a holistic data integration scheme. To access BrainTACO, we extended BrainTrawler, a web-based visual analytics framework for spatial neurobiological data, with comparative visualizations of multiple resources. This enables gene expression dissection of brain networks with, to the best of our knowledge, an unprecedented coverage and allows for the identification of potential genetic drivers of connectivity in both mice and humans that may contribute to the discovery of dysconnectivity phenotypes. Hence, BrainTACO reduces the need for time-consuming manual data aggregation often required for computational analyses in script-based toolboxes, and supports neuroscientists by directly leveraging the data instead of preparing it., (© 2024. 48. Spectroscopic signatures of HHe 2 + and HHe 3 .

Abstract

Using two different action spectroscopic techniques, a high-resolution quantum cascade laser operating around 1300 cm-1 and a cryogenic ion trap machine, the proton shuttle motion of the cations HHe2+ and HHe3+ has been probed at a nominal temperature of 4 K. For HHe3+, the loosely bound character of this complex allowed predissociation spectroscopy to be used, and the observed broad features point to a lifetime of a few ps in the vibrationally excited state. For He-H+-He, a fundamental linear molecule consisting of only three nuclei and four electrons, the method of laser-induced inhibition of complex growth (LIICG) enabled the measurement of three accurate rovibrational transitions, pinning down its molecular parameters for the first time.

49. Double resonance rotational spectroscopy of He-HCO .

Abstract

The ground state of He-HCO+ is investigated using a recently developed double resonance technique, consisting of a rotational transition followed by a vibrational transition into a dissociative state. In order to derive precise predictions for the rotational states, the high resolution infrared predissociation spectroscopy of the v1 C-H stretching mode is revisited. Eleven pure rotational transitions are measured via the double resonance method. A least squares fit of these transitions to a standard linear rotor Hamiltonian reveals that the semirigid rotor model cannot fully describe the loosely bound He-HCO+ complex. The novel double resonance technique is compared with other action spectroscopic schemes, and some potential future applications are presented.

50. Double Resonance Rotational Spectroscopy of Weakly Bound Ionic Complexes: The Case of Floppy CH_{3}^{+}-He.

Abstract

A novel rotational spectroscopy method applicable to ions stored in cold traps is presented. In a double resonance scheme, rotational excitation is followed by vibrational excitation into a dissociative resonance. Its general applicability is demonstrated for the CH_{3}^{+}-He complex, which undergoes predissociation through its C-H stretching modes ν_{1} and ν_{3}. High resolution rotational transitions are recorded for this symmetric top, and small unexpected splittings are resolved for K=1. Advantages and potential future applications of this new approach are discussed.
