This article proposes an active-learning-based adaptive trajectory tracking control method for autonomous ground vehicles to compensate for modeling errors and unmodeled dynamics. The nominal vehicle model is decoupled into lateral and longitudinal subsystems, which are augmented with online Gaussian Processes (GPs), using measurement data. The estimated mean functions of the GPs are used to construct a feedback compensator, which, together with an LPV state feedback controller designed for the nominal system, gives the adaptive control structure. To assist exploration of the dynamics, the paper proposes a new, dynamic active learning method to collect the most informative samples to accelerate the training process. To analyze the performance of the overall learning tool-chain provided controller, a novel iterative, counterexample-based algorithm is proposed for calculating the induced L2 gain between the reference trajectory and the tracking error. The analysis can be executed for a set of possible realizations of the to-be-controlled system, giving robust performance certificate of the learning method under variation of the vehicle dynamics. We present the bolometric light curve modeling of 98 hydrogen-poor superluminous supernovae (SLSNe-I) using three types of power inputs: the magnetar model and two kinds of circumstellar interaction models, applying the constant density and the steady wind scenario. The quasi-bolometric luminosities of the objects were calculated from the ZTF g- and r-band data using the methodology of \citet{chen23b}, and then they were modeled with the Minim code. It was found that the light curves of 45 SLSNe-I can be fitted equally well with both the magnetar and the CSM models, 14 objects prefer the magnetar model and 39 SLSNe-I favor the CSM model. The magnetar modeling yielded a mean spin period of $P~=~4.1 \pm 0.20$ ms and a magnetic field of $B~=~5.65 \pm 0.43 \cdot 10^{14}$ G, consistently with the literature. However, the ejected mass was estimated to be significantly larger compared to previous studies presenting either multi-color light curve modeling with MOSFiT or bolometric light curve modeling: we obtained a mean value and standard error of 34.26 and 4.67 $M_\odot$, respectively. The circumstellar interaction models resulted in even larger ejecta masses with a mean and standard error of 116.82 and 5.97 $M_\odot$ for the constant density model, and 105.99 and 4.50 $M_\odot$ for the steady wind model. Although the ejected mass depends strongly on the electron scattering opacity (assumed to be $\kappa~=~$0.2 in this work) and the ejecta velocity, which were estimated to be globally larger compared to earlier studies, our results suggest that SLSNe-I are indeed the explosions of the most massive stars., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ, 23 pages, 29 figures, supplementary at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.14591928

Defects in wide band gap crystals have emerged as a promising platform for hosting colour centres that enable quantum photonic applications. Among these, hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), a van der Waals material, stands out for its ability to be integrated into heterostructures, enabling unconventional charge injection mechanisms that bypass the need for p-n junctions. This advancement allows for the electrical excitation of hBN colour centres deep inside the large hBN bandgap, which has seen rapid progress in recent developments. Here, we fabricate hBN electroluminescence (EL) devices that generate narrowband colour centres suitable for electrical excitation. The colour centres are localised to tunnelling current hotspots within the hBN flake, which are designed during device fabrication. We outline the optimal conditions for device operation and colour centre stability, focusing on minimising background emission and ensuring prolonged operation. Our findings follow up on the existing literature and mark a step forward towards the integration of hBN based colour centres into quantum photonic technologies., Comment: 11 pages, 4 captioned figures

The signature kernel is a positive definite kernel for sequential and temporal data that has become increasingly popular in machine learning applications due to powerful theoretical guarantees, strong empirical performance, and recently introduced various scalable variations. In this chapter, we give a short introduction to $\texttt{KSig}$, a $\texttt{Scikit-Learn}$ compatible Python package that implements various GPU-accelerated algorithms for computing signature kernels, and performing downstream learning tasks. We also introduce a new algorithm based on tensor sketches which gives strong performance compared to existing algorithms. The package is available at https://github.com/tgcsaba/ksig.

BATSRUS, our state-of-the-art extended magnetohydrodynamic code, is the most used and one of the most resource-consuming models in the Space Weather Modeling Framework. It has always been our objective to improve its efficiency and speed with emerging techniques, such as GPU acceleration. To utilize the GPU nodes on modern supercomputers, we port BATSRUS to GPUs with the OpenACC API. Porting the code to a single GPU requires rewriting and optimizing the most used functionalities of the original code into a new solver, which accounts for around 1% of the entire program in length. To port it to multiple GPUs, we implement a new message passing algorithm to support its unique block-adaptive grid feature. We conduct weak scaling tests on as many as 256 GPUs and find good performance. The program has 50-60% parallel efficiency on up to 256 GPUs, and up to 95% efficiency within a single node (4 GPUs). Running large problems on more than one node has reduced efficiency due to hardware bottlenecks. We also demonstrate our ability to run representative magnetospheric simulations on GPUs. The performance for a single A100 GPU is about the same as 270 AMD "Rome" CPU cores, and it runs 3.6 times faster than real time. Building upon earlier work, we explore the limits of using a configuration of satellites to measure the trace of the gravitational gradient tensor using intersatellite laser ranging and timing observables without relying on high-precision external observables such as deep space radio navigation or astrometry with unrealistic accuracy. A refined model, calculated with extended numerical precision, confirms that exceptional sensitivity is possible, placing within reach observational tests of certain modified gravity theories (e.g., Yukawa terms, galileons) using heliocentric orbits in the vicinity of the Earth. The sensitivity of the experiment improves at larger heliocentric distances. A constellation placed at 30 astronomical units, still well within the domain of feasibility using available propulsion and deep space communication technologies, may approach sensitivities that are sufficient to detect not just the gravitational contribution of the interplanetary medium but perhaps even cosmological dark matter and dark energy constituents., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures

Deep-learning-based nonlinear system identification has shown the ability to produce reliable and highly accurate models in practice. However, these black-box models lack physical interpretability, and often a considerable part of the learning effort is spent on capturing already expected/known behavior due to first-principles-based understanding of some aspects of the system. A potential solution is to integrate prior physical knowledge directly into the model structure, combining the strengths of physics-based modeling and deep-learning-based identification. The most common approach is to use an additive model augmentation structure, where the physics-based and the machine-learning (ML) components are connected in parallel. However, such models are overparametrized, training them is challenging, potentially causing the physics-based part to lose interpretability. To overcome this challenge, this paper proposes an orthogonal projection-based regularization technique to enhance parameter learning, convergence, and even model accuracy in learning-based augmentation of nonlinear baseline models., Comment: Submitted to L4DC 2025

Empty buses are standing at a bus station. $n$ passengers arrive, and they each board a bus completely at random (meaning that they choose uniformly and independently). Then all buses depart. We show that the more buses there are, the more likely it is that someone (i.e. at least one passenger) travels alone (while $n$ is fixed). More generally, we show that the number of lonely passengers increases with the number of buses, in the sense of stochastic dominance. This problem turned out to be surprisingly difficult, with no short solution known to the author so far, despite the efforts of many experts. In [Kozma-Toth, Ann. Probab. v 45, pp 4307-4347 (2017)] the weak CLT was established for random walks in doubly stochastic (or, divergence-free) random environments, under the following conditions: 1. Strict ellipticity assumed for the symmetric part of the drift field. 2. $H_{-1}$ assumed for the antisymmetric part of the drift field. The proof relied on a martingale approximation (a la Kipnis-Varadhan) adapted to the non-self-adjoint and non-sectorial nature of the problem. The two substantial technical components of the proof were: 1. A functional analytic statement about the unbounded operator formally written as $|L+L^*|^{-1/2}(L-L^*)|L+L^*|^{-1/2}$, where $L$ is the infinitesimal generator of the environment process, as seen from the position of the moving random walker. 2. A diagonal heat kernel upper bound which follows directly from Nash's inequality, or, alternatively, from the "evolving sets" arguments of [Morris-Peres, Probab. Theory Rel. Fields. v. 133 pp 245-266 (2005)] valid only under the assumed strict ellipticity. In this note we present a partly alternative proof of the same result which relies only on functional analytic arguments and not on the diagonal heat kernel upper bound provided by Nash's inequality. This alternative proof is relevant since it can be naturally extended to non-elliptic settings pushed to the optimum, which will be presented in a forthcoming paper. The signature kernel is a kernel between time series of arbitrary length and comes with strong theoretical guarantees from stochastic analysis. It has found applications in machine learning such as covariance functions for Gaussian processes. A strength of the underlying signature features is that they provide a structured global description of a time series. However, this property can quickly become a curse when local information is essential and forgetting is required; so far this has only been addressed with ad-hoc methods such as slicing the time series into subsegments. To overcome this, we propose a principled, data-driven approach by introducing a novel forgetting mechanism for signatures. This allows the model to dynamically adapt its context length to focus on more recent information. To achieve this, we revisit the recently introduced Random Fourier Signature Features, and develop Random Fourier Decayed Signature Features (RFDSF) with Gaussian processes (GPs). This results in a Bayesian time series forecasting algorithm with variational inference, that offers a scalable probabilistic algorithm that processes and transforms a time series into a joint predictive distribution over time steps in one pass using recurrence. For example, processing a sequence of length $10^4$ steps in $\approx 10^{-2}$ seconds and in $< 1\text{GB}$ of GPU memory. We demonstrate that it outperforms other GP-based alternatives and competes with state-of-the-art probabilistic time series forecasting algorithms.

In this paper, we present data-driven representations of linear parameter-varying (LPV) systems that can be used for direct data-driven analysis and control of LPV systems. Specifically, we use the behavioral approach for LPV systems to develop a data-driven representation of the finite-horizon behavior of an LPV system that can be represented by a kernel representation with shifted-affine scheduling dependence. Moreover, we provide a necessary and sufficient rank-based test on the available data that concludes whether the data-driven representation fully represents the finite-horizon behavior. The results in this paper allow for direct data-driven analysis and control of LPV systems with stability and performance guarantees. We demonstrate this by also solving the LPV data-driven simulation problem. Moreover, through the use of LPV systems as surrogates for nonlinear systems, our results may serve as a stepping stone towards direct data-driven analysis and control of nonlinear systems., Comment: 12 pages. Interstellar molecules are excellent tools for studying the physical and chemical environments of massive star-forming regions. In particular, vibrationally excited HC$_3$N (HC$_3$N*) lines are the key tracers for probing hot cores environments. We present the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) 3 mm observations of HC$_3$N* lines in 60 hot cores, aiming to investigate how physical conditions affect the excitation of HC$_3$N* transitions. We have used the XCLASS for line identification. Under the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE), we derived the rotation temperature and column density of HC$_3$N* transitions in hot cores. Additionally, we calculated the H$_2$ column density and number density, along with the abundance of HC$_3$N* relative to H$_2$, to enable a comparison of the physical properties of hot cores with different numbers of HC$_3$N* states. We have detected HC$_3$N* lines in 52 hot cores, in which 29 cores showing more than one vibrationally excited state. Hot cores with higher gas temperatures have more detections of these vibrationally excited lines. The excitation of HC$_3$N* requires dense environments, with its spatial distribution influenced by the presence of UC Hii regions. The observed column density of HC$_3$N* contributes to the number of HC$_3$N* states in hot core environments. After analyzing the various factors influencing HC$_3$N* excitation in hot cores, we conclude that the excitation of HC$_3$N* is mainly driven by mid-IR pumping, while collisional excitation is ineffective., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

The stochastic gravitational wave background (GWB) recently discovered by several pulsar timing array (PTA) experiments is consistent with arising from a population of coalescing super-massive black hole binaries (SMBHBs). The amplitude of the background is somewhat higher than expected in most previous population models or from the local mass density of SMBHs. SMBHBs are expected to be produced in galaxy mergers, which are also thought to trigger bright quasar activity. Under the assumptions that (i) a fraction $f_{bin} \sim 1$ of all quasars are associated with SMBHB mergers, (ii) the typical quasar lifetime is $t_{Q} \sim 10^{8} yr$, and (iii) adopting Eddington ratios $f_{Edd} \sim 0.3$ for the luminosity of bright quasars, we compute the GWB associated directly with the empirically measured quasar luminosity function (QLF). This approach bypasses the need to model the cosmological evolution of SMBH or galaxy mergers from simulations or semi-analytical models. We find a GWB amplitude approximately matching the value measured by NANOGrav. Our results are consistent with most quasars being associated with SMBH binaries and being the sources of the GWB, and imply a joint constraint on $t_{Q}$, $f_{Edd}$ and the typical mass ratio $q \equiv M_{2}/M_{1}$. The GWB in this case would be dominated by relatively distant $\sim 10^{9} M_{\odot}$ SMBHs at $z \approx 2 - 3$, at the peak of quasar activity. The usual derivation of Einstein's field equations from the Einstein--Hilbert action is performed by silently assuming the metric tensor's symmetric character. If this symmetry is not assumed, the result is a new theory, such as Einstein's attempted Unified Field Theory or Moffat's Nonsymmetric Gravitational Theory. Explicitly enforcing the constraint by means of a Lagrange-multiplier term restores Einstein's field equations, but the multiplier appears as an additional, unconstrained antisymmetric term. Solar energetic particles (SEPs) can pose hazardous radiation risks to both humans in space and spacecraft electronics. Numerical modeling based on first principles offers valuable insights into SEPs, providing synthetic observables for SEPs at any time and location in space. In this work, we present a high-resolution scheme based on integral relations for Poisson brackets to solve the kinetic equation for particle acceleration and transport processes. We implement this scheme within the Space Weather Modeling Framework (SWMF), developed at the University of Michigan, to conduct a comprehensive study of solar energetic protons during the 2013 April 11 SEP event. In addition, a shock capturing tool is developed to study the coronal-mass-ejection-driven shock starting from the low solar corona. Multi-point spacecraft observations, including SOHO/ERNE, SDO/AIA, GOES and ACE at Earth, and STEREO-A/B, are used for model-data comparison and validation. New synthetic observables such as white-light images, shock geometry and properties, as well as SEP intensity-time profiles and spectra provide insights for SEP studies. The influences of the mean free path on SEP intensity-time profiles and spectra are also discussed. The results demonstrate: (1) the successful implementation of the Poisson bracket scheme with a self-consistent particle tracker within the SWMF, (2) the capability of capturing the time-evolving shock surface in the SWMF, and (3) the complexity of the mean free path impacts on SEPs. We present algorithms for the online minimum hitting set problem: Given a set $P$ of $n$ points in the plane and a sequence of geometric objects that arrive one-by-one, we need to maintain a hitting set at all times. For disks of radii in the interval $[1,M]$, we present a $O(\log M \log n)$-competitive algorithm. This result generalizes from disks to positive homothets of any convex body in the plane with scaling factors in the interval $[1,M]$. As a main technical tool, we reduce the problem to the online hitting set problem for integer points and bottomless rectangles. We experimentally studied the formation of CH(A) radicals in butane seeded plasma generated with chirp-controlled ultrashort laser pulses (\(\sim 760 \, \mu \text{J}/\text{pulse}\), 890 nm, 1 kHz, 8 fs). The focused beam with high peak intensity (\(\sim 10^{14} - 10^{16} \, \text{W/cm}^2\)) caused Coulomb explosion (CE). The time dependent emission spectra were observed with the Fourier-transform Visible spectroscopy (FTVis) step-scan method. The average signal intensity decreased with the chirp in the Ar\(^+\) > C\(_2\) > H-\(\alpha\) \(\sim\) CH(A) order with a plateau for CH(A) in the \(-200\) to \(-100 \, \text{fs}^2\) range. The short rise time of the CH(A) emission signal, the monoexponential emission decay, and the nearly constant rotational and vibrational temperatures of the CH(A) radicals (\(\sim 3000 \, \text{K}\) and \(\sim 3800 \, \text{K}\)) all support their formation as a primary product. Our TDDFT calculations predict that CH and many other fragments can be formed beyond CE at \(\sim 7 \times 10^{14} \, \text{W/cm}^2\) intensity. The average charge of CH (+0.6) and its relative abundance (0.5\%) support the formation of detectable CH(A) within 120 fs.

Unlike an equilibrium gas, the distribution of active particles can be very sensitive to what happens at the boundaries of their container. Experiments and simulations have previously highlighted the possibility of exploiting this behavior for the geometric control of active particles, although a general theoretical framework is lacking. Here we propose a boundary method based on the flux transfer formalism typical of radiometry problems, where surface elements transmit and receive "rays" of active particles with infinite persistence length. As in the case of blackbody radiation, a Lambert scattering law results in a uniform distribution of active particles within the cavity, while other scattering laws result in specific patterns of particle accumulation in the bulk or over the boundary walls. We validate our method's predictions with numerical simulations and demonstrate its practical utility by spatially controlling swimming microalgae confined in light-defined arenas. The presented boundary method offers a simple and efficient way to predict particle distributions when both the geometry of the boundaries and the scattering law are known. In addition, it provides a general design principle for engineering container shapes optimized for transport, accumulation, and sorting of self-propelled colloids and microorganisms.

Scaled Relative Graphs (SRGs) provide a novel graphical frequency-domain method for the analysis of nonlinear systems. However, we show that the current SRG analysis suffers from some pitfalls that limit its applicability in analysing practical nonlinear systems. We overcome these pitfalls by modifying the SRG of a linear time invariant operator, combining the SRG with the Nyquist criterion, and apply our result to Lur'e systems. We thereby obtain a generalization of the celebrated circle criterion, which deals with broader class of nonlinearities, and provides (incremental) $L^2$-gain performance bounds. We present a lattice QCD calculation of the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon using $N_f=2+1+1$ flavors of staggered quarks with masses tuned to their physical values. Our final result, in the continuum limit, reads $a_{\mu}^{\mathrm{hlbl}} = 125.5(11.6)_{\mathrm{stat}}(0.4)_{\mathrm{syst}} \times 10^{-11}$ where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. Light, strange and charm-quark contributions are considered. In addition to the connected and leading disconnected contributions, we also include an estimate of the sub-leading disconnected diagrams. Direct detection of gravitons in gravitational experiments, including gravitational wave observatories, has been all but ruled out given the weak coupling between the gravitational field and matter. Here we propose an alternative: looking not for the presence but for the absence of graviton shot noise in gravitational wave data. Gravitational wave experiments detect very weak signals that correspond to a surprisingly small number of gravitons even at the relatively low frequencies that characterize signals from gravitational wave events. A detailed calculation, which also yields results that are consistent with the existing literature, demonstrates that graviton shot noise may be present at detectable levels in gravitational wave observations. The absence of elevated noise levels due to graviton shot noise, in turn, would indicate that gravity is not a quantum field theory with a conventional perturbative expansion at low energies., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, additional calculation included

Port-Hamiltonian neural networks (pHNNs) are emerging as a powerful modeling tool that integrates physical laws with deep learning techniques. While most research has focused on modeling the entire dynamics of interconnected systems, the potential for identifying and modeling individual subsystems while operating as part of a larger system has been overlooked. This study addresses this gap by introducing a novel method for using pHNNs to identify such subsystems based solely on input-output measurements. By utilizing the inherent compositional property of the port-Hamiltonian systems, we developed an algorithm that learns the dynamics of individual subsystems, without requiring direct access to their internal states. On top of that, by choosing an output error (OE) model structure, we have been able to handle measurement noise effectively. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated through tests on interconnected systems, including multi-physics scenarios, demonstrating its potential for identifying subsystem dynamics and facilitating their integration into new interconnected models., Comment: Preprint submitted to ECC 2025

To identify what types of non-Fermi liquid (NFL) behavior are most likely to occur in cubic metals due to doublet impurities, we derive every cubic symmetry-allowed, NFL, Kondo-type exchange coupling. We find three distinct types of NFL behavior: two-channel Kondo (2CK) behavior for a non-Kramers doublet impurity coupled to local $\Gamma_8$ conduction electrons; topological Kondo physics for a Kramers doublet impurity and $\Gamma_4$ or $\Gamma_5$ conduction electrons; and lastly, spin-half impurity spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ conduction electron Kondo behavior for a Kramers doublet impurity and $\Gamma_8$ conduction electrons. The first two critical behaviors are not straightforward to realize. In the first case, 2CK physics is not guaranteed, since cubic symmetry does not prevent an effective spatial anisotropy from exceeding the 2CK coupling, which restores a Fermi liquid behavior. In the second case, the topological Kondo interaction is guaranteed to dominate, however, the spin degeneracy of the conduction electrons needs to be lifted e.g. by a magnetic field$-$so that they can be represented by $\Gamma_4$ or $\Gamma_5$ triplets$-$which then also lifts the degeneracy of the Kramers doublet. We find that the spin-half impurity spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ conduction electron, NFL, Kondo behavior has the greatest chance of existing in diluted, cubic compounds. We compute the thermodynamics of the topological Kondo model using the numerical renormalization group, and discuss the thermodynamics of the spin-half impurity spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ conduction electron Kondo model. Consider the motion of a charged, point particle moving in the complement of a Poisson distribution of hard sphere scatterers in two dimensions under the effect of a fixed magnetic field. Building on, and extending a coupling method established by the authors, we show that this 'magnetic Lorentz gas' satisfies an invariance principle in an intermediate scaling limit. We present supernova (SN) 2023ufx, a unique Type IIP SN with the shortest known plateau duration ($t_\mathrm{PT}$ $\sim$47 days), a luminous V-band peak ($M_{V}$ = $-$18.42 $\pm$ 0.08 mag), and a rapid early decline rate ($s1$ = 3.47 $\pm$ 0.09 mag (50 days)$^{-1}$). By comparing observed photometry to a hydrodynamic MESA+STELLA model grid, we constrain the progenitor to be a massive red supergiant with M$_\mathrm{ZAMS}$ $\simeq$19 - 25 M$_{\odot}$. Independent comparisons with nebular spectral models also suggest an initial He-core mass of $\sim$6 M$_{\odot}$, and thus a massive progenitor. For a Type IIP, SN 2023ufx produced an unusually high amount of nickel ($^{56}$Ni) $\sim$0.14 $\pm$ 0.02 M$_{\odot}$, during the explosion. We find that the short plateau duration in SN 2023ufx can be explained with the presence of a small hydrogen envelope (M$_\mathrm{H_\mathrm{env}}$ $\simeq$1.2 M$_{\odot}$), suggesting partial stripping of the progenitor. About $\simeq$0.09 M$_{\odot}$ of CSM through mass loss from late-time stellar evolution of the progenitor is needed to fit the early time ($\lesssim$10 days) pseudo-bolometric light curve. Nebular line diagnostics of broad and multi-peak components of [O I] $\lambda\lambda$6300, 6364, H$\alpha$, and [Ca II] $\lambda \lambda$7291, 7323 suggest that the explosion of SN 2023ufx could be inherently asymmetric, preferentially ejecting material along our line-of-sight., Comment: Submitted to ApJ, 30 pages, 19 figures

Silicon isotopic ratios measured in meteoritic presolar grains can provide useful information about the nucleosynthesis origin of these isotopes if the rates of nuclear reactions responsible for their production are known. One of the key reactions determining the Si isotopic abundances is 29Si(p,gamma)30P. Its reaction rate is not known with sufficient precision due in part to some ambiguous resonance strength values. In the present work, the strength of the E_p = 416.9 keV resonance has been measured with high precision using the activation technique. Organic crystals offer promising potential for THz generation, but face limitations in wavelength tunability and damage threshold. By applying tilted pulse front pumping to organic crystals an additional degree of freedom is introduced into the pumping conditions enabling a wider range of pumping wavelengths without compromising phase matching. Additionally, the lifespan of organic materials can be extended by using longer pumping wavelength and eliminate lower-order multi-photon absorption, allowing for higher pumping intensity without significant free carrier absorption, thus increasing the damage threshold. Simulations predict significant improvement for four out of six investigated crystals when tilted pulse front pumping is applied. By using volume phase holographic grating one can achieve pulse front tilt in organic crystals in collinear geometry with high diffraction efficiency. Sharing retrospectively acquired data is essential for both clinical research and training. Synthetic Data Generation (SDG), using Artificial Intelligence (AI) models, can overcome privacy barriers in sharing clinical data, enabling advancements in medical diagnostics. This study focuses on the clinical evaluation of medical SDG, with a proof-of-concept investigation on diagnosing Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) using Wireless Capsule Endoscopy (WCE) images. The paper contributes by a) presenting a protocol for the systematic evaluation of synthetic images by medical experts and b) applying it to assess TIDE-II, a novel variational autoencoder-based model for high-resolution WCE image synthesis, with a comprehensive qualitative evaluation conducted by 10 international WCE specialists, focusing on image quality, diversity, realism, and clinical decision-making. The results show that TIDE-II generates clinically relevant WCE images, helping to address data scarcity and enhance diagnostic tools. The proposed protocol serves as a reference for future research on medical image-generation techniques.

Coherent quantum emitters are a central resource for advanced quantum technologies. Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) hosts a range of quantum emitters that can be engineered using techniques such as high-temperature annealing, optical doping, and irradiation with electrons or ions. Here, we demonstrate that such processes can degrade the coherence, and hence the functionality, of quantum emitters in hBN. Specifically, we show that hBN annealing and doping methods that are used routinely in hBN nanofabrication protocols give rise to decoherence of B-center quantum emitters. The decoherence is characterized in detail, and attributed to defects that act as charge traps which fluctuate electrostatically during SPE excitation and induce spectral diffusion. The decoherence is minimal when the emitters are engineered by electron beam irradiation of as-grown, pristine flakes of hBN, where B-center linewidths approach the lifetime limit needed for quantum applications involving interference and entanglement. Our work highlights the critical importance of crystal lattice quality to achieving coherent quantum emitters in hBN, despite the common perception that the hBN lattice and hBN SPEs are highly-stable and resilient against chemical and thermal degradation. It underscores the need for nanofabrication techniques that are minimally invasive and avoid crystal damage when engineering hBN SPEs and devices for quantum-coherent technologies.

As machine intelligence evolves, the need to test and compare the problem-solving abilities of different AI models grows. However, current benchmarks are often simplistic, allowing models to perform uniformly well and making it difficult to distinguish their capabilities. Additionally, benchmarks typically rely on static question-answer pairs that the models might memorize or guess. To address these limitations, we introduce Dynamic Intelligence Assessment (DIA), a novel methodology for testing AI models using dynamic question templates and improved metrics across multiple disciplines such as mathematics, cryptography, cybersecurity, and computer science. The accompanying dataset, DIA-Bench, contains a diverse collection of challenge templates with mutable parameters presented in various formats, including text, PDFs, compiled binaries, visual puzzles, and CTF-style cybersecurity challenges. Our framework introduces four new metrics to assess a model's reliability and confidence across multiple attempts. These metrics revealed that even simple questions are frequently answered incorrectly when posed in varying forms, highlighting significant gaps in models' reliability. Notably, API models like GPT-4o often overestimated their mathematical capabilities, while ChatGPT-4o demonstrated better performance due to effective tool usage. In self-assessment, OpenAI's o1-mini proved to have the best judgement on what tasks it should attempt to solve. We evaluated 25 state-of-the-art LLMs using DIA-Bench, showing that current models struggle with complex tasks and often display unexpectedly low confidence, even with simpler questions. The DIA framework sets a new standard for assessing not only problem-solving but also a model's adaptive intelligence and ability to assess its limitations. In this paper, we present a detailed analysis of the IRS 17 filament within the intermediate-mass protocluster IRAS 08448-4343 (of $\sim\,10^3\,\rm L_{\odot}$), using ALMA data from the ATOMS 3-mm and QUARKS 1.3-mm surveys. The IRS 17 filament, which spans $\sim$54000 au ($0.26\,\rm pc$) in length and $\sim$4000 au ($0.02\,\rm pc$) in width, exhibits a complex, multi-component velocity field, and harbours hierarchical substructures. These substructures include three bundles of seven velocity-coherent fibers, and 29 dense ($n\sim 10^8\,\rm cm^{-3}$) condensations. The fibers have a median length of $\sim 4500\,\rm au$ and a median width of $\sim 1400\,\rm au$. Among these fibers, four are identified as ``fertile", each hosting at least three dense condensations, which are regarded as the ``seeds" of star formation. While the detected cores are randomly spaced within the IRS\,17 filament based on the 3-mm dust continuum image, periodic spacing ($\sim1600\,\rm au$) of condensations is observed in the fertile fibers according to the 1.3-mm dust map, consistent with the predictions of linear isothermal cylinder fragmentation models. These findings underscore the crucial role of fibers in star formation and suggest a hierarchical fragmentation process that extends from the filament to the fibers, and ultimately, to the smallest-scale condensations., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables, accepted by ApJ

How can we perform a metrological task if only limited control over a quantum system is given? Here, we present systematic methods for conducting nonlinear quantum metrology in scenarios lacking a common reference frame. Our approach involves preparing multiple copies of quantum systems and then performing local measurements with randomized observables. First, we derive the metrological precision using an error propagation formula based solely on local unitary invariants, which are independent of the chosen basis. Next, we provide analytical expressions for the precision scaling in various examples of nonlinear metrology involving two-body interactions, like the one-axis twisting Hamiltonian. A $d$-dimensional tensegrity framework $(T,p)$ is an edge-labeled geometric graph in ${\mathbb R}^d$, which consists of a graph $T=(V,B\cup C\cup S)$ and a map $p:V\to {\mathbb R}^d$. The labels determine whether an edge $uv$ of $T$ corresponds to a fixed length bar in $(T,p)$, or a cable which cannot increase in length, or a strut which cannot decrease in length. We consider minimally infinitesimally rigid $d$-dimensional tensegrity frameworks and provide tight upper bounds on the number of its edges, in terms of the number of vertices and the dimension $d$. We obtain stronger upper bounds in the case when there are no bars and the framework is in generic position. The proofs use methods from convex geometry and matroid theory. A special case of our results confirms a conjecture of Whiteley from 1987. We also give an affirmative answer to a conjecture concerning the number of edges of a graph whose three-dimensional rigidity matroid is minimally connected.

Edge crossings in geometric graphs are sometimes undesirable as they could lead to unwanted situations such as collisions in motion planning and inconsistency in VLSI layout. Short geometric structures such as shortest perfect matchings, shortest spanning trees, shortest spanning paths, and shortest spanning cycles on a given point set are inherently noncrossing. However, the longest such structures need not be noncrossing. In fact, it is intuitive to expect many edge crossings in various geometric graphs that are longest. Recently, \'Alvarez-Rebollar, Cravioto-Lagos, Mar\'in, Sol\'e-Pi, and Urrutia (Graphs and Combinatorics, 2024) constructed a set of points for which the longest perfect matching is noncrossing. They raised several challenging questions in this direction. In particular, they asked whether the longest spanning path, on any finite set of points in the plane, must have a pair of crossing edges. They also conjectured that the longest spanning cycle must have a pair of crossing edges. In this paper, we give a negative answer to the question and also refute the conjecture. We present a purely deep neural network-based approach for estimating long memory parameters of time series models that incorporate the phenomenon of long-range dependence. Parameters, such as the Hurst exponent, are critical in characterizing the long-range dependence, roughness, and self-similarity of stochastic processes. The accurate and fast estimation of these parameters holds significant importance across various scientific disciplines, including finance, physics, and engineering. We harnessed efficient process generators to provide high-quality synthetic training data, enabling the training of scale-invariant 1D Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) models. Our neural models outperform conventional statistical methods, even those augmented with neural networks. The precision, speed, consistency, and robustness of our estimators are demonstrated through experiments involving fractional Brownian motion (fBm), the Autoregressive Fractionally Integrated Moving Average (ARFIMA) process, and the fractional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (fOU) process. Hub-filament systems are considered as natural sites for high-mass star formation. Kinematic analysis of the surroundings of hub-filaments is essential to better understand high-mass star formation within such systems. In this work, we present a detailed study of the massive Galactic protocluster IRAS 15394$-$5358, using continuum and molecular line data from the ALMA Three-millimeter Observations of Massive Star-forming Regions (ATOMS) survey. The 3~mm dust continuum map reveals the fragmentation of the massive ($\rm M=843~M_{\odot}$) clump into six cores. The core C-1A is the largest (radius = 0.04~pc), the most massive ($\rm M=157~M_{\odot}$), and lies within the dense central region, along with two smaller cores ($\rm M=7~and~3~M_{\odot}$). The fragmentation process is consistent with the thermal Jeans fragmentation mechanism and virial analysis shows that all the cores have small virial parameter values ($\rm \alpha_{vir}<<2$), suggesting that the cores are gravitationally bound. The mass vs. radius relation indicates that three cores can potentially form at least a single massive star. The integrated intensity map of $\rm H^{13}CO^{+}$ shows that the massive clump is associated with a hub-filament system, where the central hub is linked with four filaments. A sharp velocity gradient is observed towards the hub, suggesting a global collapse where the filaments are actively feeding the hub. We present a lattice calculation of the $\eta$ and $\eta^{\prime}$ meson masses at the physical point and in the continuum limit, based on $N_f = 2+1+1$ flavors of rooted staggered quarks. Our analysis includes gauge ensembles at the physical pion and kaon masses spread over six lattice spacings in the range [0.064-0.1315]~fm. Our main results read $m_{\eta} = 543.5(5.6)~$MeV and $m_{\eta^{\prime}} = 986(38)~$MeV, consistent with the experimental values. This is an important numerical test that supports the validity of the fourth root procedure used in the staggered quark formalism. This calculation was the first step towards extracting the pseudoscalar transition form factors of the $\eta$ and $\eta^{\prime}$ mesons that play a crucial role in the hadronic light-by-light contribution to the muon $g-2$., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures

This paper establishes an analog of the Erd\H{o}s-Ko-Rado theorem to polynomial rings over finite fields, affirmatively answering a conjecture of C. Tompkins. A $k$-uniform family of subsets of a set of finite size $n$ is $l$-intersecting if any two subsets in the family intersect in at least $l$ elements. The study of such intersecting families is a core subject of extremal set theory, tracing its roots to the seminal 1961 Erd\H{o}s-Ko-Rado theorem, which establishes a sharp upper bound on the size of these families. As an analog of the Erd\H{o}s-Ko-Rado theorem, we determine the largest possible size of a family of monic polynomials, each of degree $n$, over a finite field $F_q$, where every pair of polynomials in the family shares a common factor of degree at least $l$. We establish that the upper bound for this size is $q^{n-l}$ and characterize all extremal families that achieve this maximum size. Further extending our study to triple-intersecting families, where every triplet of polynomials shares a common factor of degree at least $l$, we prove that only trivial families achieve the corresponding upper bound. Moreover, by relaxing the conditions to include polynomials of degree at most $n$, we affirm that only trivial families achieve the corresponding upper bound.

Almost all spiral galaxies have been observed to have flattening rotation curves. The new Gaia DR3 released data shows a Milky Way sharply Keplerian declining rotation curve, starting at $\sim 16$ kpc and ending at 26.5 kpc. The data reduces the total Milky Way mass by an order of magnitude, $M=2.06\times 10^{11}M_{\odot}$, compared to the standard required dark matter halo mass, $(2-5)\times10^{12}M_\odot$. Newtonian and modified gravity (MOG) fits are applied to the Gaia DR3 rotation curve data. The fit obtained using MOG has a total mass of $M\sim1.3\times 10^{11}M_{\odot}$, while the Newtonian fit predicts a mass of $M\sim2\times 10^{11}M_{\odot}$. These are in excess of the estimated visible baryon mass of the Milky Way, $M_b\sim (0.6-1.0)\times 10^{11}M_{\odot}$. It is possible that if the cicumgalactic (CGM) plasma-gas continues to be confirmed experimentally, then the additional baryon mass required to account for the estimated total Milky Way mass could be attributed to the CGM hot plasma-gas halo., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures

We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of SN 2020xga and SN 2022xgc, two hydrogen-poor superluminous supernovae (SLSNe-I) at $z = 0.4296$ and $z = 0.3103$, respectively, which show an additional set of broad Mg II absorption lines, blueshifted by a few thousands kilometer second$^{-1}$ with respect to the host galaxy absorption system. Previous work interpreted this as due to resonance line scattering of the SLSN continuum by rapidly expanding circumstellar material (CSM) expelled shortly before the explosion. The peak rest-frame $g$-band magnitude of SN 2020xga is $-22.30 \pm 0.04$ mag and of SN 2022xgc is $-21.97 \pm 0.05$ mag, placing them among the brightest SLSNe-I. We used high-quality spectra from ultraviolet to near-infrared wavelengths to model the Mg II line profiles and infer the properties of the CSM shells. We find that the CSM shell of SN 2020xga resides at $\sim 1.3 \times 10^{16}~\rm cm$, moving with a maximum velocity of $4275~\rm km~s^{-1}$, and the shell of SN 2022xgc is located at $\sim 0.8 \times 10^{16}~\rm cm$, reaching up to $4400~\rm km~s^{-1}$. These shells were expelled $\sim 11$ and $\sim 5$ months before the explosions of SN 2020xga and SN 2022xgc, respectively, possibly as a result of luminous-blue-variable-like eruptions or pulsational pair instability (PPI) mass loss. We also analyzed optical photometric data and modeled the light curves, considering powering from the magnetar spin-down mechanism. The results support very energetic magnetars, approaching the mass-shedding limit, powering these SNe with ejecta masses of $\sim 7-9~\rm M_\odot$. The ejecta masses inferred from the magnetar modeling are not consistent with the PPI scenario pointing toward stars $> 50~\rm M_\odot$ He-core; hence, alternative scenarios such as fallback accretion and CSM interaction are discussed., Comment: 22 pages text, 7 pages appendix, 20 figures. This paper investigates payload grasping from a moving platform using a hook-equipped aerial manipulator. First, a computationally efficient trajectory optimization based on complementarity constraints is proposed to determine the optimal grasping time. To enable application in complex, dynamically changing environments, the future motion of the payload is predicted using physics simulator-based models. The success of payload grasping under model uncertainties and external disturbances is formally verified through a robustness analysis method based on integral quadratic constraints. The proposed algorithms are evaluated in a high-fidelity physical simulator, and in real flight experiments using a custom-designed aerial manipulator platform.

For a set of red and blue points in the plane, a minimum bichromatic spanning tree (MinBST) is a shortest spanning tree of the points such that every edge has a red and a blue endpoint. A MinBST can be computed in $O(n\log n)$ time where $n$ is the number of points. In contrast to the standard Euclidean MST, which is always plane (noncrossing), a MinBST may have edges that cross each other. However, we prove that a MinBST is quasi-plane, that is, it does not contain three pairwise crossing edges, and we determine the maximum number of crossings. Moreover, we study the problem of finding a minimum plane bichromatic spanning tree (MinPBST) which is a shortest bichromatic spanning tree with pairwise noncrossing edges. This problem is known to be NP-hard. The previous best approximation algorithm, due to Borgelt et al. (2009), has a ratio of $O(\sqrt{n})$. It is also known that the optimum solution can be computed in polynomial time in some special cases, for instance, when the points are in convex position, collinear, semi-collinear, or when one color class has constant size. Euclidean spanners are important geometric objects that have been extensively studied since the 1980s. The two most basic "compactness'' measures of a Euclidean spanner $E$ are the size (number of edges) $|E|$ and the weight (sum of edge weights) $\|E\|$. In this paper, we initiate the study of instance optimal Euclidean spanners. Our results are two-fold. We demonstrate that the greedy spanner is far from being instance optimal, even when allowing its stretch to grow. More concretely, we design two hard instances of point sets in the plane, where the greedy $(1+x \epsilon)$-spanner (for basically any parameter $x \geq 1$) has $\Omega_x(\epsilon^{-1/2}) \cdot |E_\mathrm{spa}|$ edges and weight $\Omega_x(\epsilon^{-1}) \cdot \|E_\mathrm{light}\|$, where $E_\mathrm{spa}$ and $E_\mathrm{light}$ denote the per-instance sparsest and lightest $(1+\epsilon)$-spanners, respectively, and the $\Omega_x$ notation suppresses a polynomial dependence on $1/x$. As our main contribution, we design a new construction of Euclidean spanners, which is inherently different from known constructions, achieving the following bounds: a stretch of $1+\epsilon\cdot 2^{O(\log^*(d/\epsilon))}$ with $O(1) \cdot |E_\mathrm{spa}|$ edges and weight $O(1) \cdot \|E_\mathrm{light}\|$. In other words, we show that a slight increase to the stretch suffices for obtaining instance optimality up to an absolute constant for both sparsity and lightness.
