1. Comparative study on the uniform energy deposition achievable via optimized plasmonic nanoresonator distributions

Abstract

Plasmonic nanoresonators of core-shell composition and nanorod shape were optimized to tune their absorption cross-section maximum to the central wavelength of a short pulse. Their distribution along a pulse-length scaled target was optimized to maximize the absorptance with the criterion of minimal absorption difference in between neighbouring layers. Successive approximation of layer distributions made it possible to ensure almost uniform deposited energy distribution up until the maximal overlap of two counter-propagating pulses. Based on the larger absorptance and smaller uncertainty in absorptance and energy distribution core-shell nanoresonators override the nanorods. However, optimization of both nanoresonator distributions has potential applications, where efficient and uniform energy deposition is crucial, including phase transitions and even fusion.

7. Thermally induced coherence in a Mott insulator of bosonic atoms

Abstract

Conventional wisdom is that increasing temperature causes quantum coherence to decrease. Using finite temperature perturbation theory and exact calculations for the strongly correlated bosonic Mott insulating state we show a practical counter-example that can be explored in optical lattice experiments: the short-range coherence of the Mott insulating phase can increase substantially with increasing temperature. We demonstrate that this phenomenon originates from thermally produced defects that can tunnel with ease. Since the near zero temperature coherence properties have been measured with high precision we expect these results to be verifiable in current experiments., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

8. Theory of correlations between ultra-cold bosons released from an optical lattice

Abstract

In this paper we develop a theoretical description of the correlations between ultra-cold bosons after free expansion from confinement in an optical lattice. We consider the system evolution during expansion and give criteria for a far field regime. We develop expressions for first and second order two-point correlations based on a variety of commonly used approximations to the many-body state of the system including Bogoliubov, meanfield decoupling, and particle-hole perturbative solution about the perfect Mott-insulator state. Using these approaches we examine the effects of quantum depletion and pairing on the system correlations. Comparison with the directly calculated correlation functions is used to justify a Gaussian form of our theory from which we develop a general three-dimensional formalism for inhomogeneous lattice systems suitable for numerical calculations of realistic experimental regimes., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures. 9. Two point correlations of a trapped interacting Bose gas at finite temperature

Abstract

We develop a computationally tractable method for calculating correlation functions of the finite temperature trapped Bose gas that includes the effects of s-wave interactions. Our approach uses a classical field method to model the low energy modes and treats the high energy modes using a Hartree-Fock description. We present results of first and second order correlation functions, in position and momentum space, for an experimentally realistic system in the temperature range of $0.6T_c$ to $1.0T_c$. We also characterize the spatial coherence length of the system. Abstract

We outline a practical scheme for measuring the thermodynamic properties of a Bose-Einstein condensate as a function of internal energy. We propose using Bragg scattering and controlled trap manipulations to impart a precise amount of energy to a near zero temperature condensate. After thermalisation the temperature can be measured using standard techniques to determine the state equation $T(U,N,\omega)$. Abstract

Complex structures in nature are often formed by self-assembly. In order to mimic the formation, to enhance the production, or to modify the structures, easy-to-use methods are sought to couple engineering and self-assembly. Chemical-garden-like precipitation reactions are frequently used to study such couplings because of the intrinsic chemical and hydrodynamic interplays. In this work, we present a simple method of applying periodic pressure fluctuations given by a peristaltic pump which can be used to achieve regularly banded precipitate membranes in the copper–phosphate system.
