In Christianity, there are many religious holidays related to the Virgin Mary. These holidays are celebrated in line with the events that happened to Mary and the characteristics attributed to her. According to Christians, Mary was cleansed of all sins and at the end of her life, she was saved from death through Jesus and ascended to heaven. As a matter of fact, the sinless birth of Mary in 1854 and her ascension to heaven in 1950 was declared as Church doctrine. With the adoption of these beliefs about Mary by the Church, the Assumption of Mary and the Feasts of Immaculate Conception took place in the Church calendar. These two festivals are the times when the big celebrations that come to the forefront among the holidays dedicated to Mary. In this research, the family traditions of Assumption of Mary and Immaculate Conception Feasts are discussed, based on European countries where Catholicism is intense. In this way, it was trying to determine the devotion of Catholic families to the Virgin Mary and their traditions on the feasts in question. In the study, an answer was sought to the question of how these two holidays are celebrated today. In this direction, interviews were held with individuals participating from European countries. By shedding light on the past and present of the aforementioned holidays, comprehensive information is given about Catholic family traditions., Hıristiyanlıkta Meryem’le ilgili birçok dini bayram bulunmaktadır. Bu bayramlar, Meryem’in başına gelen hâdiseler ve ona atfedilen özellikler doğrultusunda kutlanmaktadır. Hıristiyanlara göre Meryem, tüm günahlardan arınmış ve hayatının sonunda İsa vasıtasıyla ölümden kurtularak cennete yükselmiştir. Nitekim 1854’te, Meryem’in günahsızlığı, 1950’de göğe yükselmesi Kilise doktrini olarak ilan edilmiştir. Meryem hakkındaki bu inançların Kilise tarafından benimsenmesiyle Meryem’in Göğe Yükseliş ve Günahsızlığı Bayramları Kilise takviminde yerini almıştır. Bu iki bayram Meryem’e adanan bayramlar arasında ön plana çıkan büyük kutlamaların yapıldığı zamanlardır. Bu araştırmada Katolikliğin yoğun olarak yaşandığı Avrupa ülkeleri esas alınarak Meryem’in Göğe Yükseliş ve Günahsızlığı Bayramlarındaki aile gelenekleri ele alınmıştır. Bu sayede Katolik ailelerin Meryem’e olan bağlılıkları ve söz konusu bayramlardaki gelenekleri belirlenmeye çalışılmıştır. Çalışmada bu iki bayramın günümüzde nasıl kutlandığı sorusuna da cevap aranmıştır. Bu doğrultuda Avrupa ülkelerinden katılım sağlayan bireylerle görüşmeler yapılmıştır. Sözü geçen bayramların geçmişine ve bugününe ışık tutularak Katolik aile gelenekleri hakkında kapsamlı bilgiler verilmiştir.

Aizanoi, one of the important cities of Phrygia, had experienced a transformation by 3rd Century Crisis which was felt throughout Roman Empire. Local elites lost their economic privileges because the transferring Temple Lands income to the imperial treasury now, and their political dominance for the increasing pressure of central bureaucracy upon the provinces, so they withdrew from the urban life. Aizanoi lost its autonomy, and its council became dysfunctional. The public buildings, which are the symbols of the Greco-Roman urban tradition, were either abandoned or lost their functions. In this process, the use of classical necropoleis ended and cemeteries around new churches appeared. The burial customs changed, and tombstones were not produced anymore. Use of writing had also dramatically decreased. Finally, Aizanoi transformed to a medieval settlement at the end of Late Antiquity. It was also disintegration of classical urban culture and the ideal of Polis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The last quarter of the 19th century was a period of good relations between Rome and Istanbul, with the Ottoman Sultan 'Abd al-Hamīd II (1876-1909) on the one side and the Roman Pope Leo XIII (1878- 1903) on the other. The many Catholics living in the Ottoman Empire were an important factor in their cooperation. The correspondence between the Pope and the Sultan intensified during this period. The two parties were not indifferent to each other's important days and provided mutual gifts. This study predominantly references the Ottoman Archive Documents and news from Istanbul and the European press at that time in addition to basic sources. Aizanoi, Kütahya İli’nin 48 km güneybatısında yer alan Çavdarhisar ilçesi sınırlarında, Örencik Ovası platosunda konumlanmıştır. Antik Çağ’da ise kent Phrygia Epiktetos Bölgesi’nde yer almaktadır. Aizanoi’un en erken verileri Paleolitik Dönem’e tarihlenen buluntular olmakla birlikte, yerleşime ait en erken arkeolojik veriler şimdilik Zeus Tapınağı’nın üzerinde bulunduğu höyükten gelir ve Erken Tunç Dönemi’ne tarihlenir. Kentin en parlak süreci ise Roma İmparatorluk Çağı’dır. Özellikle imparator Hadrianus ve Antoninler Dönemi’nde artan imar faaliyetleri ve yoğun göç alan yerleşime dönüşümü, kenti kozmopolit bir yapıya büründürmüştür. MS 3. yüzyılın ortalarına kadar hem politik hem dini konumuyla bölgenin önde gelen kentlerindendir. MS 4. yüzyıl başlarında Phrygia ve Karia’nın birleşiminden oluşan Phrygia Prima Eyaleti’nin parçası olmuştur. Aizanoi kamusal ve dini mimari örnekleri barındıran antik dokusu; Türk Dönemi’ne ait yerel sivil mimari örneklerini kapsayan kırsal yapısıyla kültürel bir miras örneği olup, bu karakteriyle 12 Nisan 2012 tarihinde Unesco Dünya Kültürel Mirası Geçici Listesi’ne kabul edilmiştir. 2012 ile 2017 yılları arasında kentin Kuzey Nekropolis’i olarak tanımladığımız alanda kazılar gerçekleştirilmiştir

Günümüzde Kütahya’nın Çavdarhisar İlçesi sınırlarında bulunan Aizanoi Antik Kenti, Hellenistik Dönemden itibaren Kuzeybatı Phrygia’nın önemli merkezlerinden biri olmuştur. MÖ 133 yılından sonra Roma’nın Asia Eyaleti sınırları içinde kalan kent, bu tarihten itibaren Roma ile ilişkilerini geliştirmeye çalışmış ve MS I.yüzyılda bu ilişkiler ciddi anlamda ivme kazanmıştır. Kent bu döenmde, imparatorluk kültü neokoriası almak ve bir metropolis olmak için çabalamıştır. Yüzyılın sonunda ise kısa sürede olsa bu kültün merkezi hâline gelmiştir. Fakat İmparator Domitianus’un ölümüyle birlikte Roma ile Aizanoi arasındaki ilişkiler de biçim değiştirmiştir. MS II.yüzyılda kent, İmparator Hadrianus’un merkeziyetçi ve panhellenist politikasının etkisinde kalmıştır. Zeus Aizanon Tapınağı’na ait topraklarda yapılan düzenlemeler önceki yüzyılın seçkinlerinin arka planda kalmasına neden olmuş ve imparatorların da desteğiyle yeni bir seçkinler ortaya çıkmıştır. Antoninus Pius döneminde ise Aizanoi, Panhellenion’da etkin bir konuma ulaşmış ve birliğin yönetiminde önemli bir role sahip olmuştur. Bunun yanında, kentin tiyatrosunda gerçekleştirilen kazı çalışmaları sonucu ortaya çıkan yeni epigrafik bulgular bu yüzyılda kentin kabile sisteminde de bazı değişikliklerin gerçekleştiğini göstermiştir. Kentin yaşadığı bu süreç, Roma ile Hellen polisleri arasındaki ilişkinin niteliğini ortaya koymakla birlikte, Aizanoi’un yerel tarihinde bir tasfiye ve yeni düzen hareketinin bir portresini oluşturmuştur. Bu çalışmanın amacı da Aizanoi ve Roma arasında yaşanan bu sürecin panoramasını sunmak ve Roma ile Hellen kentleri arasındaki ilişkilere genellenebilir bir örnek ortaya koymaktır., Aizanoi, located in the Çavdarhisar District of Kütahya today, was one of the important centers of northwestern Phrygia. The city, remained within the borders of the Province Asia during first two centuries of Roman domination, tried to develop her relations with the Empire for next two centuries. These relations gained momentum under the Flavian Dynasty, and the city tried to get the neokoria of imperial cult and to become a metropolis. At the end of the 1st century, Aizanoi became a center of imperial cult. However, with the death of Emperor Domitian, the relations between Aizanoi and Rome also changed. In the 2nd century AD, the city was under the influence of the centralist and panhellenist policy of Emperor Hadrian. The arrangements made on the lands belonging to the Temple of Zeus Aizanon caused the elites of the previous century to remain in the background, and a new elite emerged with the support of the emperors. During the reign of Antoninus Pius, Aizanoi reached an active position in Panhellenion and had an important role in the management of the union. Besides, some new epigraphic documents found in excavations carried out in the city’s theatre showed that changes took place in the tribal system of the polis in this century. While this process of the city reveals the nature of the relationship between Rome and Hellen poleis, it also created a portrait of an epuration and new order movement in the local history of Aizanoi. This study aims to present the panorama of this process between Aizanoi and Rome and to present a generalizable example of the relations between Rome and Hellenic cities.

Bithynia’nın farklı iki kentinde doğmuş olan Lucius Flavius Arrianus (yak.MS 86-160) ve Cassius Dio Cocceianus (yak.MS 155-235) İmparatorluk Roma’sının iki önemli devlet adamı ve yazarıdır. İkisi de Roma ile yakın ilişki içinde bulunmuş, hatta Arrianus kendi dönemi içinde bakıldığında Asia’dan çıkan sayılı senatör ve consülden biri olmuştur. Cassius Dio ise ondan bir kuşak sonra hem politika hem de yazarlık sahnesinde kendini göstermiş ve başarılı olmuştur. Bu iki karakter başta tarih olmak üzere coğrafya, strateji, biyografi gibi pek çok alanda eser kaleme alarak geçmişin ve kendi dönemlerinin izlerini muhafaza etmişler ve hem tarih yazıcılığında hem de politik yaşantıda etkili olmuşlardır. Çalışma, bu iki yazar ve siyasetçinin hayatı ve eserleri hakkında bir derleme sunmayı amaçlamaktadır., Lucius Flavius Arrianus (c. 86-160 AD) and Cassius Dio Cocceianus (ca. 155-235 AD) who were born in two important cities of the Bithynia were two important writers and statesmen of Roman Imperial period. Both had close relations with Rome, and Arrianus was one of the few senators and consuls from Asia in his own time. Cassius Dio, on the other hand, became successful in both politics and writing a generation later. These two characters have preserved the traces of the past and their own periods by writing in many fields such as geography, strategy, and biography, especially history, and have been influential in both historiography and political life. The study aims to present a compilation about the life and works of these two writers and politicians.

Diwali is derived from the word Deepavali, which means "series of lights", and has had wide repercussions in the Indian world and continues to do so. As Diwali is determined according to the lunar calendar, it has different celebration days. It is usually celebrated at the end of October and the beginning of November in the Gregorian calendar. There are different mythological accounts of the origin of Diwali. The most prominent origin narrative, as a Hindu festival in the first stage, is the one centered on Rama-Sita-Ravana. This narrative was later reinterpreted by Sikhs in line with their own traditions, and this is how the understanding of Diwali emerged in Sikhism. In the Rama-Sita-Ravana narrative, which represents the central narrative of the origin of Diwali in Hinduism, Rama's wife Sita is kidnapped by Ravana, King of Lanka, then Rama wages war on Ravana and saves his wife by defeating him. Afterwards, a magnificent welcome is organized for the couple who come to Ayodhya, and with their return, abundance and fertility occur in the city. Hindus adopted this narrative to their daily lives and believed that Goddess Lakshmi, who is a prominent figure in Diwali, also provides abundance and fertility today. Diwali celebrations last for five days. On the first day, when a different God/Goddess stands out on each day, houses are cleaned, and decorations are made. On the second day, preparations continue. On the third day, the most important day of Diwali, Lakshmi Puja, is worshiped. The third day is also important financially because it is the day when the account books of the previous year are closed, and the new account books are opened. Also, on the third day, Ganesha is in the foreground, as well as Lakshmi. As a matter of fact, Hindus believe that without Ganesha, worshiping Lakshmi would be meaningless. The fourth and fifth days of Diwali are the time when family relationships are developed. Because on the fourth day, while the parents are holding a feast and presenting gifts to their newly married children; On the fifth day, sisters and brothers are given gifts and treats in return. Although Diwali is a Hindu festival at first glance, it also has an important place in other Indian religions. Diwali celebrations in Jainism are partly calm due to the principle of Ahimsa. The Jains trace the origin of this festival back to the 6th century BC. Thus, aiming to show that Diwali already exists within the tradition, the Jains celebrate this festival in memory of Mahavira's attainment of Moksha. As with Hindus, Jains light oil lamps, open new financial books, and go to temples at this festival. Another religious tradition in which Diwali is celebrated with enthusiasm is Sikhism. Although there are different narratives about the origin of Diwali within Sikhism, the Guru Har Gobindcentered narrative is generally accepted. He is taken into captivity by Emperor Jahangir. Freed from captivity in 1619, Har Gobind moved to Amritsar with the princes beside him. The people of Amritsar celebrate the guru's liberation and entry into the city with great enthusiasm. Another significance of this festival for Sikhism is the renewal of the financial books, as in Hinduism and Jainism.Diwali is a festival also celebrated by Buddhists. Unlike other religious traditions, different mythological narratives are not encountered in Buddhism for this festival. The importance of this festival for Buddhists is based on King Ashoka's adoption of Buddhism on Diwali day in the 3rd century BC. It is seen that Christians and Muslims of Indian origin also participated in Diwali. For these two religious traditions, Diwali has a cultural meaning. Diwali celebrations are witnessed in different countries besides India. For Indian families, Diwali has an important function in the context of transmitting their traditions. However, it has been a controversial issue whether Diwali can be considered a public holiday in diaspora countries. Although this issue was sometimes brought to the official authorities, it did not receive a positive response in most cases. During the COVID-19 process, Diwali celebrations have lagged behind their previous splendor. The COVID-19 epidemic, which affects Indian religions as well as other religions, has caused the Diwali celebrations to shift in different dimensions. The vast majority of street celebrations were suspended, celebrations held in great temples were broadcast online, and visits were not permitted. In this study, first of all, different narratives regarding the origin of Diwali from the Hindus’ perspective were revealed, and then the five-day celebrations and its reflection on the society were described in detail. The meaning and importance of Diwali for different religious groups have been discussed comparatively. With the gains that the Diwali celebrations outside India have provided to people of Indian origin and the possible situations to be encountered in the future, information on how the Diwali celebrations took place during the COVID-19 epidemic process has been discussed in light of current data. Diyarbakır doğumlu olan Süleyman Nazif, edebiyatçılığının yanında bürokratik kimliği ile de bilinen kişidir. Matbaa Müdürlüğü, Vilayet Mektupçuluğunun yanı sıra önemli vilayetlerde valilik yapmıştır. Bulunduğu yerle ilgili gördüğü sorunlara dair İstanbul’la pek çok yazışmaları vardır. Bunlardan biri de, Diyarbakır’daki eğitim konusuna değinen raporudur. 1892 yılında yazmış olduğu layihasında, Diyarbakır’ın kadim tarihinden giriş yaparak şehirdeki Müslüman ve Hıristiyanların sosyoekonomik durumuna değinir. Daha sonra, bir takım karşılaştırmalar yaparak konuyu eğitime getirir. Diyarbakır’da bulunan Katolik Kapusenlerin okulunu ziyaret eder ve bu okula dair gözlemlerini aktarır. Fransa ve Vatikan’ın okul üzerindeki etkisine değinir ve okulun gerçek amacını sorgular. Ayrıca Diyarbakır’a bağlı bir sancak olan Mardin’deki yabancı misyonların faaliyetlerini de ele alır. Süleyman Nazif yabancı okulları, devletin açmış olduğu okullarla karşılaştırır ve Müslümanların okullarının intizamsızlığından bahsederek bir takım ıslahatların yapılmasını ister. Kendine ait üslubu ile yazmış olduğu layihası, devletin üst yönetimi tarafından ciddiye alınır ve Diyarbakır Maarifine konunun çözümü için tekrar yazı yazılır. Bu durum Süleyman Nazif’le Diyarbakır’daki bazı resmi yetkililer arasında kırgınlığa da yol açar. Ancak Süleyman Nazif’in layihası sonradan Diyarbakır maarifinde bir takım kıpırdanmalara sebebiyet verir. Uyum içinde çalıştığı Diyarbakır Valisi Sırrı Paşa ile Maarif Müdürü Mehmet Ali Ayni’nin gayretleri de buna büyük katkı sunar. Süleyman Nazif’in Layihası, XIX. yüzyılın son çeyreğinde Osmanlı genelinden Diyarbakır yereline maarife ve bürokratik işleyişe dair önemli bilgileri içermektedir. Dolayısı ile bu çalışmada, onun layihasında vermiş olduğu bilgilerle dönemin arşiv belgeleri karşılaştırılmış ve bu çerçevede bir sonuç elde edilmeye çalışılmıştır., Born in Diyarbakır, Süleyman Nazif is known for his bureaucratic identity as well as his literary work. In addition to the Directorate of Printing, Provincial Letters, he served as governor in important provinces. He has many correspondences with the capital, Istanbul, about the problems he witnessed. One of them is his report on education in Diyarbakır. In his report, which he wrote in 1892, he deals with the socio-economic situation of the Muslims and Christians in the city, starting from the ancient history of Diyarbakır. Then, he deals with the issue of education with some comparisons. He visits the Catholic Capuchins' school in Diyarbakır and states his observations about this school. He deals with the influence of France and the Vatican on the school and questions the true purpose of the school. He also examines the activities of foreign missions in Mardin, a sanjak (subdivision of a province) of Diyarbakır. Süleyman Nazif compares foreign schools with the schools opened by the state and mentions the irregularity of Muslims' schools and wants some reforms in education. His report, which he wrote in his own style, is taken seriously by the top management of the state and a letter is written to Diyarbakır Education officials to resolve the issue. This situation also causes resentment with Süleyman Nazif and some officials in Diyarbakır. However, Süleyman Nazif's statement later caused some awakenings in Diyarbakır education. The efforts of Diyarbakır Governor Sırrı Pasha and Education Director Mehmet Ali Ayni, with whom he worked in harmony, also contributed greatly to this awakening. Süleyman Nazif's report contains important information about the education and bureaucratic functioning from the Ottoman general to the Diyarbakır locality in the last quarter of the 19th century. Therefore, in this study, the information in his report and the archival documents of the period were compared and a result was obtained within this framework.

Aizanoi is located on the Örencik Plain Plateau, within the borders of Çavdarhisar district, 48 km southwest of the Kütahya Province. In ancient times, the city was in the Phrygian Epictetos region. Although the earliest data of Aizanoi are the findings dated to the Paleolithic period, the earliest archaeological data belonging to the settlement are obtained from the mound on which the temple of Zeus is located and they are dated to the Early Bronze Age. During the Roman Imperial period, the city experienced its brightest era. Especially during the reign of emperor Hadrianus and Antoninus, the increasing development in construction activities and transformation of Aizanoi to a city that received intense migration, her a cosmopolitan structure. Until the middle of the 3rd century AD, Aizanoi continued to hold her leading political and religious position in the region. At the beginning of the 4th century AD, Aizanoi became a part of the Phrygia Prima province, which constituted by combining Phrygia and Caria. The city has an ancient texture with examples of public and religious architecture. In addition, it is an example of cultural heritage with its pastoral structure, which includes examples of local civil architecture from the Turkish period. With these features, it was accepted into the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Tentative List on 12 April 2012. Excavations were carried out in the area defined as the "northern necropolis" between 2012 and 2017. The Northern necropolis is located at the rear side of the theater in the northern part of Aizanoi and 1020 m above sea level. The depth of the graves is generally around 40-60 cm, which is not a very deep dug for burial; on the contrary, burial was carried out close to the surface of the soil. Determination of similar depth of graves throughout the north necropolis indicates that was a conscious preference. According to the data, the burial in the Northern Necropolis began in the late 2nd century BC and intensified in the 1st century BC and 1st century AD. Although it was rare, burial activities continued during the 3rd century AD. The common form of burial was cremation in from the 2nd century BC to the midst of the 1st century AD and then inhumation appeared in the early 1st century AD. Dorsal laying is popular in the inhumation burials. The types of the graves are simple earth, simple earth with plaque lid, shaft grave, chamber tomb and ostothece. The first two of these are the commonest type of graves in the Northern Necropolis. Both single and multiple burials were found during the excavations. Grave good are divided into two as outside and inside of the grave which includes terracotta figurines, pottery, glass, metal, bone, stone objects, and coins. The Aizanoi mask was found in a simple earthen grave of two young adults with destroyed skeletons in the Northern Necropolis in 2012. It has been observed that the first person was a young woman and the second also a young person. Since the bones were scattered, the lying direction or positions of the person is not clear. The grave goods are 5 iron nails, a bronze coin, a terracotta mask, a few pots, a lamp, the fragment of unguentarium and 2 thymeitarion bases, which were put outside of the grave an as offering. The terracotta mask was found in two pieces under the leg bones of the person. Broken and missing parts of hair and face were restored and completed. The terracotta mask found as a grave good should portray one of the characters of the Dionysiac world with two lines of band above the forehead and small horns on the forehead. In this study, the mask is examined in terms of iconography and in this context, its meaning and whom it portrayed are discussed. Then, the reasons for placing the mask into the grave are emphasized. The grave goods found inside and outside the tomb are also examined and the mask and tomb are dated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bu makale Ahmet Türkan’ın International Journal of Humanities and Social Science (IJHSS) Uluslararası Hakemli Dergisinin Mayıs 2015 Cilt 5, Sayı 5’inde yayınlanmış olan “Turkey-Vatican Relations from the Ottomans to the Republic” isimli makalesinin İngilizce aslından Türkçeye tercümesidir., Papa Francis’in 2014 yılındaki Türkiye ziyareti ile birlikte, Türkiye Vatikan İlişkileri sıkça konuşulur olmuştur. Resmen 1960 yılında kurulan Türkiye Vatikan İlişkileri, içerisinde önemli bir tarihi geçmişi barındırmaktadır. Ciddi anlamda Sultan II. Abdülhamit zamanında Fransa’nın Katolikler üzerindeki etkisini azaltma gibi birçok nedenden dolayı kurulmaya çalışılan resmi ilişkiler, her defasında farklı bir nedenden dolayı gerçekleşememiştir. Turkey-Vatican relations which were established formally in 1960 embody an important historical past. Formal relations, which were tried to be established substantially during the reign of Sultan Abdulhamit II,-especially to reduce the impact of France over the Catholics and for many other reasons-, were not established due to many different reasons, each different than the other.In this study, we will try to examine the reasons why the Turkish-Vatican relations that started at high friendship level in the second half of the 19th century, hadn’t been realized at formal level until the second half of the 20th century. Furthermore, we will examine the effective factors over these relations both for the Ottoman and the Republic periods. We will also discuss to what degree the Catholics and the Orthodox in Turkey were influential over these relations. In this sense, main part of our work will be within the frame of first-hand sources and documents obtained from the Turkish Republic State Archives.

Phrygia’nınönemli kentlerinden biri olan Dorylaion, her dönemde olduğu gibi Romaİmparatorluğu döneminde de kozmopolit bir yapıya sahipti. MÖ 12.yüzyıldanitibaren Phrygler tarafından yerleşim gören bu bölge, MÖ 3.yy’dan sonraHellenistik kültürün etkisine girmiş, ardından Latin yerleşimcilerin gelmesiylekarmaşık bir kültürel yapıya ev sahipliği yapmıştır. Kent ve çevresindeki ölümalgısı ve ölü gömme gelenekleri de bu zeminde gelişmiştir. Buna göre, Dorylaion’da yaşayan insanlarölümü varlığın biçim değişimi olarak görmüş, bu değişimin de ölen kişiye biçilmişolan kader, tanrıların kararları ya da başka kutsal veya kötücül varlıklarınmüdahalesi sonucu gerçekleştiğine inanmıştır. Ölüm sonrası tutulan yas da budoğrultuda ve toplumsal bir şekilde kendini göstermiştir. Bunun yanında, mevcutkültürel yapı, ölü kültünün çeşitli şekillerinin de görülmesini sağlamış, hattabu, bir süre sonra bir tür kurtuluş fikrine dönüşmüş ve ölen kişinin diğerdünyadaki esenliği temennisi daha belirgin hâle gelmiştir. Bu durum bölgedekiilk eskatolojik izleri teşkil etmiş ve tek tanrılaşma sürecinin izlenmesindeönemli bir kültürel olgu hâline gelmiştir.

Ahteri Muslihittin Efendi born in Afyonkarahisar and made lectures in Kütahya was one of the most important scholars in the 16 century. He contributed many important works to the world of science like Camiü’l-Mesâil, Muhadarat, Tarihi Ahterî, Şerh ale’r-Risaleti’l-Kefevîfi’l-Edeb. He is known with the name Ahterî because of he wrote a dictionary named Ahterî. Ahterî-i Kebîr written in Kütahya is a dictionary from Arabic to Turkish passed from hand to hand among the students in the Madrasahs and other scientists for years in the Turkish-Islamic world. In the dictionary, there are many kind information such as words that reflect the social and cultural characteristics of daily life together with local dialect, cities and as well as from the origin of their names to small tribes. One of the issues mentioned in the dictionary is concepts of religion and belief systems. We have been mostly focusing on Judaism and Christianity religions and their belief systems in this dictionary which can be handled multifunctional. We used the copy printed in the printed house named Âmire in Hijri 1310 in Istanbul from among a lot of copies, Afyonkarahisar’da doğan ve Kütahya’da müderrislik yapmış olan Ahterî Muslihittin Efendi XVI. yüzyılın önemli âlimlerindendir. Câmiü’l-Mesâil, Muhâdarât, Tarih-i Ahteri, Şerh ale’r-Risaleti’l-Kefevî fi’l-Edeb gibi önemli eserleri ilim dünyasına kazandırmıştır. Onun Ahterî ismiyle ün salması bu adla yazmış olduğu lügati nedeniyledir. Kütahya’da yazılmış olan Ahterî-i Kebîr sözlüğü Türk-İslam âleminde gerek medrese öğrencileri gerekse diğer ilim adamları arasında yıllarca elden ele dolaşmış olan Arapçadan Türkçeye sözlüktür. Sözlükte, yerel lehçeyle günlük yaşamın sosyal ve kültürel özelliklerini yansıtan kelimeler yanında, şehirlerden, onların adlarının kökeninden küçük kabilelere varıncaya kadar birçok bilgi yer almaktadır. Sözlükte işlenen önemli konulardan biri de dinî kavramlar ve inanç sistemleridir. Çok yönlü ele alınabilecek olan bu sözlükte biz daha Yahudi ve Hıristiyanlık dini ve onların inanç sistemleri üzerinde yoğunlaştık. 1099’da Kudüs’e gelen Haçlılar, burada bir Latin Patrikliği kurmuşlardır. Bu dönemde Latin patrikliği Kudüs’teki ağırlığını iyiden iyiye hissettirme-nin yanında buradaki Doğu Hıristiyanlarına da büyük baskı uygulamıştır. Bunlardan en fazla baskı altında kalanı ise Ortodoks Rumlardır. Selahattin Eyyubi’nin 1187’de şehri ele geçirmesiyle birlikte Latin Patrikliği Ku-düs’ten ayrılmış ve varlığını Akka şehrinde sürdürmeye devam etmiştir. 1291’de Haçlıların Akka’yı kaybetmeleri ile beraber Kudüs Latin Patrik-liği ortadan kalkmıştır. XIV. yüzyıldan XIX. yüzyılın ortalarına kadar Ku-düs’teki Latin topluluğunun temsilciliğini Fransisken tarikatının mensup-ları üstlenmiştir. Sultan Abdülmecit Dönemi’nde (1839-1861) Papalıkla iyi ilişkiler sonucunda Kudüs Latin Patrikliği 1848 yılında tekrar açılmış-tır. 1948’de İsrail’in kuruluşu ve beraberinde yaşanan Arap-İsrail Savaş-ları Kudüs Latin Patrikliğini de bir karmaşanın içerisine atmıştır., The crusaders who invaded the Jerusalem in 1099 had established a Latin Patriarchate there. The Latin Patriarchate had made its presence more distinctive in Jerusalem and also implemented great pressure on the Eastern Christians. The most affected among these groups was Orthodox Greeks. After the conquest of Jerusalem by Salahaddin Ayyubi in 1187, the Latin Patriarchate had left Jerusalem and had continued to live in Akka. When Crusaders lost Akka in 1291, The Latin Patriarchate of Jeru-salem had disappeared. From 14th century to middle of 19th century, the Franciscan Friars had under token the representation of the Latin commu-nity of Jerusalem. During Abdülmecit’s reign (1839-1861), as a result of good relations with the Papacy, the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem had been re-established in 1848. The establishment of Israel in 1948 and Arab-Israeli wars had brought the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem to a chaotic situation. Today, the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem has presented merely a prestigious position rather than patriarchal body.

1099’da Kudüs’e gelen Haçlılar, burada bir Latin Patrikliği kurmuşlardır. Bu dönemde Latin patrikliği Kudüs’teki ağırlığını iyiden iyiye hissettirmenin yanında buradaki Doğu Hıristiyanlarına da büyük baskı uygulamıştır. Bunlardan en fazla baskı altında kalanı ise Ortodoks Rumlardır. Selahattin Eyyubi’nin 1187’de şehri ele geçirmesiyle birlikte Latin Patrikliği Kudüs’ten ayrılmış ve varlığını Akka şehrinde sürdürmeye devam etmiştir. 1291’de Haçlıların Akka’yı kaybetmeleri ile beraber Kudüs Latin Patrikliği ortadan kalkmıştır. XIV. yüzyıldan XIX. yüzyılın ortalarına kadar Kudüs’teki Latin topluluğunun temsilciliğini Fransisken tarikatının mensupları üstlenmiştir. Sultan Abdülmecit Dönemi’nde (1839-1861) Papalıkla iyi ilişkiler sonucunda Kudüs Latin Patrikliği 1848 yılında tekrar açılmıştır. 1948’de İsrail’in kuruluşu ve beraberinde yaşanan Arap-İsrail Savaşları Kudüs Latin Patrikliğini de bir karmaşanın içerisine atmıştır., The crusaders who invaded the Jerusalem in 1099 had established a Latin Patriarchate there. The Latin Patriarchate had made its presence more distinctive in Jerusalem and also implemented great pressure on the Eastern Christians. The most affected among these groups was Orthodox Greeks. After the conquest of Jerusalem by Salahaddin Ayyubi in 1187, the Latin Patriarchate had left Jerusalem and had continued to live in Akka. When Crusaders lost Akka in 1291, The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem had disappeared. From 14th century to middle of 19th century, the Franciscan Friars had under token the representation of the Latin community of Jerusalem. During Abdülmecit’s reign (1839-1861), as a result of good relations with the Papacy, the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem had been re-established in 1848. The establishment of Israel in 1948 and ArabIsraeli wars had brought the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem to a chaotic situation. Today, the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem has presented merely a prestigious position rather than patriarchal body.

Background: We compared the differences in thermal damage at the surgical margin between monopolar cautery, bipolar cautery, and LigaSure™ in breast cancer lumpectomy specimens and assessed the effect of these techniques on the evaluation of the surgical margins. Methods: 30 patients scheduled for breast-conserving surgery for breast cancer were included in this study. During lumpectomy, each of the superior, inferior, lateral, and medial borders of the tumour was excised using one of the following: a scalpel, monopolar cautery, bipolar cautery, and LigaSure technology. The surgical margins of frozen and paraffin-embedded tissue sections of the lumpectomy specimen were evaluated. Thermal damage was defined as the maximum depth of thermal damage (in mm) from the surgical margin, and the level was categorized as none, low (≤1 mm), or high (>1 mm). Results: There was no statistically significant difference between monopolar cautery, bipolar cautery, and LigaSure in terms of thermal damage. There was no thermal damage at the surgical margin in tissues dissected by scalpel. Conclusion: Thermal damage due to the excision method may cause false-negative and false-positive results in the surgical margin evaluation of lumpectomy specimens. More research is needed on the effects of different energy modalities on surgical margin evaluation in breast-conserving surgery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

50. Acute Appendicitis in Pregnant Women: Our Clinical Experience

- Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyse 13 patients who were treated in our clinic due to acute appendicitis during pregnancy. Methods: Records of the patients who received appendectomy with appendicitis diagnosis in our Turgut Özal University Research and Application Hospital between January 2007 and December 2015 have been analyzed retrospectively. Results: Appendectomies were performed on 13 pregnant patients with an acute appendicitis diagnosis. Average age of the patients was 27.69 years (between 22-37 years). Most frequent complaint of the patients was abdominal pain and most frequent examination finding was tenderness at right lower quadrant. Ultrasonography was used in all cases for diagnosis. Surgery was decided with clinical diagnosis for five cases (38.5%) where appendix had not been identified with ultrasonography. While laparoscopic appendectomy was applied in one case (7.7%) and open appendectomy was applied using a McBurney incision in 12 cases (92.3%). Average hospitalization duration was 1.69 days. All patients were tracked together through the Gynaecology Department for two weeks after they had been discharged from the hospital. Preterm delivery, maternal and fetal loss did not occur. Conclusion: It is considered appropriate to apply ultrasonography routinely to all pregnant patients in whom acute appendicitis is suspected. Concern for maternal or fetal complication that may occur in consequence of an unnecessary surgery should not be at a level that will delay surgical treatment needed by the patient.
