Abstract: Abstract JSNS $$^2$$ 2 (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) is an experiment that searches for sterile neutrinos via the observation of $$\bar{\nu }_{\mu } \rightarrow \bar{\nu }_{e}$$ ν ¯ μ → ν ¯ e appearance oscillations using muon decay-at-rest neutrinos. The JSNS $$^2$$ 2 experiment performed data taking from 2021. In this manuscript, a study of the accidental background is presented. The rate of the accidental background is ( $$9.29\pm 0.39) \times 10^{-8}$$ 9.29 ± 0.39 ) × 10 - 8 /spill with 0.75 MW beam power and comparable to the expected number of signal events.

Abstract: Abstract The T2K experiment presents new measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters using $$19.7(16.3)\times 10^{20}$$ 19.7 ( 16.3 ) × 10 20 protons on target (POT) in (anti-)neutrino mode at the far detector (FD). Compared to the previous analysis, an additional $$4.7\times 10^{20}$$ 4.7 × 10 20 POT neutrino data was collected at the FD. Significant improvements were made to the analysis methodology, with the near-detector analysis introducing new selections and using more than double the data. Additionally, this is the first T2K oscillation analysis to use NA61/SHINE data on a replica of the T2K target to tune the neutrino flux model, and the neutrino interaction model was improved to include new nuclear effects and calculations. Frequentist and Bayesian analyses are presented, including results on $$\sin ^2\theta _{13}$$ sin 2 θ 13 and the impact of priors on the $$\delta _{\textrm{CP}}$$ δ CP measurement. Both analyses prefer the normal mass ordering and upper octant of $$\sin ^2\theta _{23}$$ sin 2 θ 23 with a nearly maximally CP-violating phase. Assuming the normal ordering and using the constraint on $$\sin ^2\theta _{13}$$ sin 2 θ 13 from reactors, $$\sin ^2\theta _{23}=0.561^{+0.021}_{-0.032}$$ sin 2 θ 23 = 0 . 561 - 0.032 + 0.021 using Feldman–Cousins corrected intervals, and $$\varDelta {}m^2_{32}=2.494_{-0.058}^{+0.041}\times 10^{-3}~\text {eV}^2$$ Δ m 32 2 = 2 . 494 - 0.058 + 0.041 × 10 - 3 eV 2 using constant $$\varDelta \chi ^{2}$$ Δ χ 2 intervals. The CP-violating phase is constrained to $$\delta _{\textrm{CP}}=-1.97_{-0.70}^{+0.97}$$ δ CP = - 1 . 97 - 0.70 + 0.97 using Feldman–Cousins corrected intervals, and $$\delta _{\textrm{CP}}=0,\pi $$ δ CP = 0 , π is excluded at more than 90% confidence level. A Jarlskog invariant of zero is excluded at more than $$2\sigma $$ 2 σ credible level using a flat prior in $$\delta _{\textrm{CP}},$$ δ CP , and just below $$2\sigma $$ 2 σ using a flat prior in $$\sin \delta _{\textrm{CP}}.$$ sin δ CP . When the external constraint on $$\sin ^2\theta _{13}$$ sin 2 θ 13 is removed, $$\sin ^2\theta _{13}=28.0^{+2.8}_{-6.5}\times 10^{-3},$$ sin 2 θ 13 = 28 . 0 - 6.5 + 2.8 × 10 - 3 , in agreement with measurements from reactor experiments. These results are consistent with previous T2K analyses.

Abstract: Abstract JSNS $$^2$$ 2 (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) is an experiment that is searching for sterile neutrinos via the observation of $${\bar{\nu }}_{\mu } \rightarrow {\bar{\nu }}_{e}$$ ν ¯ μ → ν ¯ e appearance oscillations using muon decay-at-rest neutrinos. Before dedicated data taking in the first-half of 2021, we performed a commissioning run for 10 days in June 2020. Using the data obtained in this commissioning run, in this paper, we present an estimate of the correlated background which imitates the $${\bar{\nu }}_{e}$$ ν ¯ e signal in a sterile neutrino search. In addition, in order to demonstrate future prospects of the JSNS $$^2$$ 2 experiment, possible pulse shape discrimination improvements towards reducing cosmic ray induced fast neutron background are described.

Abstract: Abstract The electron (anti-)neutrino component of the T2K neutrino beam constitutes the largest background in the measurement of electron (anti-)neutrino appearance at the far detector. The electron neutrino scattering is measured directly with the T2K off-axis near detector, ND280. The selection of the electron (anti-)neutrino events in the plastic scintillator target from both neutrino and anti-neutrino mode beams is discussed in this paper. The flux integrated single differential charged-current inclusive electron (anti-)neutrino cross-sections, dσ/dp and dσ/d cos(θ), and the total cross-sections in a limited phase-space in momentum and scattering angle (p > 300 MeV/c and θ ≤ 45°) are measured using a binned maximum likelihood fit and compared to the neutrino Monte Carlo generator predictions, resulting in good agreement.

5. AMPLITUDE VARIATIONS OF THE REFLECTED SIGNAL DURING VERTICAL SOUNDING OF THE IONOSPHERE AT MIDDLE LATITUDES

Abstract: In this paper, we discuss the main types of quasiperiodic variations in amplitudes of a reflected signal during vertical sounding of the ionosphere at middle latitudes. The initial experimental data is vertical sounding ionograms obtained by the Cyclone ionosonde. The ionosonde is located in Kazan (59°, 49°) and in standard mode allows us to receive one ionogram per minute. In the analysis, methods are used to visualize a large flow of ionograms in the form of final summary maps of the state of the ionosphere (A-, H-, As-maps). We give typical examples of quasiperiodic variations in amplitudes of a reflected signal in ionograms and on A-maps for various types of multipath beatings (polarization and due to signal scattering by ionospheric irregularities). Frequency properties of such beatings are used to estimate the difference in virtual reflection heights between modes of different polarizations with high accuracy, which makes it possible to refine the form of the electron density profile of the lower ionosphere. We have detected a phenomenon rare for the mid-latitude Es layer — beatings of two O modes with different virtual reflection heights. We also present features of quasiperiodic variations in amplitudes of a reflected signal on traces of the transient Es layer. We study possible causes of the appearance of such beatings.

Abstract: Abstract This short paper presents the statistics of spread-F occurrence at four low-mid latitude locations (17.0° N, 21.2° N, 26.5° N and 36.5° N mag. lat.) in Japan longitude sector (~ 135° E) in March to April 2002, 2003 and 2006 (high, medium and low solar activity). The location of a spread-F minimum predicted by theoretical models is identified for the first time. The spread-F minimum occurs at the poleward side of the equatorial ionisation anomaly crest and shifts equatorward from ~ 25° N mag. lat. at high solar activity to below 17° N at low solar activity. The corresponding spread-F maximum occurring on the poleward side of the minimum also shifts equatorward from ~ 35° N (or beyond) at medium solar activity to 20°–25° N at low solar activity. The spread-F occurrence increases with decreasing solar activity at all locations especially at higher latitudes (> ~ 25° N) where there is almost no occurrence at high solar activity.

Abstract: The vertical ground motion of seismic surface waves launches acoustic waves into the atmosphere and induces ionospheric disturbances. Disturbances due to Rayleigh waves near the short-period Airy phase appear as wavy fluctuations in the virtual height of an ionogram and have a multiple-cusp signature (MCS) when the fluctuation amplitude is increased. An extremely developed MCS was observed at Kazan, Russia, after the 2010 M 8.8 Chile earthquake. The ionogram exhibited steep satellite traces for which the virtual heights increased rapidly with frequency starting near the top of cusps and continuing for 0.1–0.2 MHz. This complicated ionogram was analyzed by applying a ray tracing technique to the radio wave propagation in the ionosphere that was perturbed by acoustic waves. Acoustic wavefronts were inclined by the effects of finite Rayleigh wave velocity and sound speed in the thermosphere. The satellite echo traces were reproduced by oblique returns from the inclined wavefronts, in addition to the nearly vertical returns that are responsible for the main trace.

Abstract: The details of auditory response at the subthreshold level in the rodent primary somatosensory cortex, the barrel cortex, have not been studied extensively, although several phenomenological reports have been published. Multisensory features may act as neuronal representations of links between inputs from one sensory modality to other sensory modalities. Here, we examined the basic multisensory postsynaptic responses in the rodent barrel cortex using in vivo whole-cell recordings of neurons. We observed robust responses to acoustic stimuli in most barrel cortex neurons. Acoustically evoked responses were mediated by hearing and reached approximately 60% of the postsynaptic response amplitude elicited by strong somatosensory stimuli. Compared to tactile stimuli, auditory stimuli evoked postsynaptic potentials with a longer latency and longer duration. Specifically, auditory stimuli in barrel cortex neurons appeared to trigger "up states", episodes associated with membrane depolarization and increased synaptic activity. Taken together, our data suggest that barrel cortex neurons have multisensory properties, with distinct synaptic mechanisms underlying tactile and non-tactile responses.

Abstract: Progress in microwave and millimeter-wave technologies has made possible advanced diagnostics for application to various fields, including radio astronomy, alien substance detection, plasma diagnostics, airborne and space-borne imaging radars called as synthetic aperture radars, and living body measurements. Transmission, reflection, scattering, and radiation processes of electromagnetic waves are utilized as diagnostic principles. The diagnostics are classified as active and passive systems. Specifically, active radar reflectometry has become of importance in various applications due to the possibility of high localization and accessibility of the measurements as well as the non-invasive nature of the systems. In this paper, recent development and application of radar reflectometers are described. 12. Natural history of severe aortic stenosis in elderly heart failure patients who declined transcatheter aortic valve implantation

Abstract: Background Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is an established minimally invasive treatment for elderly patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS). Although it is a relatively minimally invasive procedure, many elderly patients cannot undergo TAVI due to advanced age, advanced dementia, significantly impaired ADL, or because the patient or family does not wish to undergo TAVI. In general, severe AS patients died 5 years after an angina attack, 3 years after syncope symptoms, and 2 years after heart failure symptoms. However, few studies have investigated the prognosis of elderly patients with severe AS who declined TAVI. Purpose This study aimed to comprehend the natural history of elderly severe AS patients who declined aortic valve intervention and identify risk factors for death in the TAVI era. Methods We retrospectively reviewed 2,786 echocardiographic data from our hospital between 2017 and 2021. We identified 504 patients with AS in the echocardiography database. The severe AS was defined by the following echocardiography parameters: peak aortic flow velocity ≥4.0 m/s, aortic valve mean gradient ≥40 mmHg, aortic valve area (AVA) Results The mean age was 89±6 years, and 63 (77%) were women. AHA/ACC classification was Stage A/B/C/D: 0%/52.4%/39.0%/8.5%. As event occurrence, we detected 34 (41.5%) all-cause deaths, 41 (50.0%) major adverse cardiovascular events, 32 (39.0%) development of heart failure, 13 (15.9%) chest pain attacks, and 3 (3.7%) syncope. The time from diagnosis of severe AS to all-cause death was 227±273 days, and the 1-, 2-, and 3-year survival rates were 61.5%, 46.2%, and 36.9%, respectively. Of the heart failure-onset population, 16 (50.0%) were found to have severe AS on initial heart failure admission. The incidence of heart failure at 1, 2, and 3 years after diagnosis of severe AS was 60.1%, 56.7%, and 45.4%, respectively. The time from heart failure to death was 107±147 days. Cox proportional hazards analysis adjusted with age, sex, comorbidities revealed that dementia (HR 4.5, P=0.014) and Katz index Conclusions Compared to the comprehension of the natural history of AS patients, the prognosis in severe AS patients who declined TAVI was extremely poor. 17. ROTI Keograms based on CMONOC to characterize the ionopsheric irregularities in 2014

Abstract: Ionospheric irregularities have been studied since ~70 years ago. With the development of global navigation satellite system (GNSS), GNSS networks have been used to get the characteristics of the irregularities, including the drift velocity, the structure, and the evolution and so on. In this paper, keograms based on the Crustal Movement Observation Network of China (CMONOC) were used to characterize the irregularities over the area from 85 to 125°E in longitude and 11 to 35°N in latitude in 2014. Keograms were obtained for the rate of TEC index (ROTI) in each 0.5 longitude degrees and 30 minutes universal time pixel. The results showed that the occurrence rate of irregularities was high in the equinox months and December, and lowest in June in 2014. In equinox months the irregularities often appeared after sunset. In March the irregularities usually had long lifetime of ~5-7 hours and ~5 degrees apparent longitude scales. The long lifetime usually was accompanied by obvious eastward drift of ~100m/s and large vROTI. In September the irregularities had weaker ROTI and shorter lifetime than those in March. In June, they appeared ~2-3 hours later than those in equinoxes and drifted westward. And the summer irregularities had weakest ROTI and their latitude was ~30°N, much higher than those in equinoxes. In December, the irregularities had small patches with a longitude scale of ~2 degrees and short lifetime of ~2 hours. Different from the equatorial irregularities in equinox months, the solstice irregularities mainly appeared should be local phenomenon.

Abstract: The virtual height of the bottom side F-region (h'F) and equatorial spread-F (ESF) onsets at Chumphon (10.7° N, 99.4° E; 3.3° N magnetic latitude) were compared with the behaviour of equatorial electrojet (EEJ) ground strength at Phuket (8.1° N, 98.3° E; 0.1° N magnetic latitude) during the period from November 2007 to October 2008. Increase in the F-layer height and ESF onsets during the evening hours were well connected with the EEJ ground strength before sunset, namely, both the height increase and ESF onsets were suppressed when the integrated EEJ ground strength for the period from 1 to 2 h prior to sunset was negative. The finding suggests observationally that the pre-sunset E-region dynamo current and/or electric field are related to the F-region dynamics and ESF onsets around sunset.

20. Equinoctial asymmetry of a low-latitude ionosphere-thermosphere system and equatorial irregularities: evidence for meridional wind control

Abstract: Nocturnal ionospheric height variations were analyzed along the meridian of 100° E by using ionosonde data. Two ionosondes were installed near the magnetic conjugate points at low latitudes, and the third station was situated near the magnetic equator. Ionospheric virtual heights were scaled every 15 min and vertical E×B drift velocities were inferred from the equatorial station. By incorporating the inferred equatorial vertical drift velocity, ionospheric bottom heights with the absence of wind were modeled for the two low-latitude conjugate stations, and the deviation in heights from the model outputs was used to infer the transequatorial meridional thermospheric winds. The results obtained for the September and March equinoxes of years 2004 and 2005, respectively, were compared, and a significant difference in the meridional wind was found. An oscillation with a period of approximately 7 h of the meridional wind existed in both the equinoxes, but its amplitude was larger in September as compared to that in March. When the equatorial height reached the maximum level due to the evening enhancement of the zonal electric field, the transequatorial meridional wind velocity reached approximately 10 and 40 m/s for the March and September equinoxes, respectively. This asymmetry of the ionosphere-thermosphere system was found to be associated with the previously reported equinoctial asymmetry of equatorial ionospheric irregularities; the probability for equatorial irregularities to occur is higher in March as compared to that in September at the Indian to Western Pacific longitudes. Numerical simulations of plasma bubble developments were conducted by incorporating the transequatorial neutral wind effect, and the results showed that the growth time (e-folding time) of the bubble was halved when the wind velocity changed from 10 to 40 m/s.

Abstract: Prelamin A is a farnesylated precursor of lamin A, a nuclear lamina protein. Accumulation of the farnesylated prelamin A variant progerin, with an internal deletion including its processing site, causes Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome. Loss of function mutations in ZMPSTE24, which encodes the prelamin A processing enzyme, lead to accumulation of full-length farnesylated prelamin A and cause related progeroid disorders. Some data suggest that prelamin A also accumulates with physiological aging. Zmpste24-/- mice die young, at ~20 weeks. Because ZMPSTE24 has functions in addition to prelamin A processing, we generated a mouse model to examine effects solely due to the presence of permanently farnesylated prelamin A. These mice have an L648R amino acid substitution in prelamin A that blocks ZMPSTE24-catalyzed processing to lamin A. The LmnaL648R/L648R mice express only prelamin and no mature protein. Notably, nearly all survive to 65-70 weeks, with approximately 40% of male and 75% of female LmnaL648R/L648R mice having near-normal lifespans of 90 weeks (almost 2 years). Starting at ~10 weeks of age, LmnaL648R/L648R mice of both sexes have lower body masses and body fat than controls. By ~20-30 weeks of age, they exhibit detectable cranial, mandibular and dental defects similar to those observed in Zmpste24-/- mice, and have decreased vertebral bone density compared to age- and sex-matched controls. Cultured embryonic fibroblasts from LmnaL648R/L648R mice have aberrant nuclear morphology that is reversible by treatment with a protein farnesyltransferase inhibitor. These novel mice provide a robust model to study the effects of farnesylated prelamin A during physiological aging.

Abstract: The JSNS^2 (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) experiment aims to search for oscillations involving a sterile neutrino in the eV^2 mass-splitting range. The experiment will search for the appearance of electron antineutrinos oscillated from muon antineutrinos. The electron antineutrinos are detected via the inverse beta decay process using a liquid scintillator detector. A 1MW beam of 3 GeV protons incident on a spallation neutron target produces an intense and pulsed neutrino source from pion, muon, and kaon decay at rest. The JSNS^2 detector is located 24 m away from the neutrino source and began operation from June 2020. The detector contains 17 tonnes of gadolinium (Gd) loaded liquid scintillator (LS) in an acrylic vessel, as a neutrino target. It is surrounded by 31 tonnes of unloaded LS in a stainless steel tank. Optical photons produced in LS are viewed by 120 R7081 Hamamatsu 10-inch Photomultiplier Tubes (PMTs). 23. Renin-angiotensin system inhibitors can be a first choice drug for hypertension in patients treated with vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitors

Abstract: Background Vascular endothelial growth factor Signaling Pathway (VSP) inhibitor suppresses tumor growth in solid cancers with disorganized tumor vasculature.1 However, VSP inhibitor often provokes hypertension as an adverse effect.2 The VSP inhibitor-induced hypertension may lead to a dose reduction or discontinuation of the treatment, which cause to poor prognosis. Therefore, it is important to investigate the appropriate anti-hypertensive treatment during cancer therapy. Although renin-angiotensin system (RAS) inhibitor or calcium channel blocker (CCB) is recommended to first-line anti-hypertensive drugs for cancer patients,3 it has not been well-elucidated whether RAS inhibitor or CCB is a beneficial impact for clinical outcome. Purpose The aim of this study is to clarify whether RAS inhibitor or CCB would be an effective drug as the first antihypertensive drug during VSP inhibitor therapy. Method From the LIFE Study database which consisted of 14 municipality-level information from claims data between 2016 and 2020, 1,263 cancer patients treated with VSP inhibitors were retrospectively reviewed. All patients were stratified into two groups according to hypertensive drugs: (1) RAS inhibitors alone (n=512) and (2) CCBs alone (n=751) (Figure 1). The time to treatment failure (TTF) was substituted as an alternative clinical indicator of overall survival. The Kaplan-Meier survival method with the log-rank test was conducted to compare the TTF between the two groups. In addition, Cox proportional hazard model adjusted with baseline clinical characteristics was performed to analyze determinant factors for TTF. Results There were no difference in baseline characteristics including age, sex, primary cancer site, the type of VSP inhibitors, and past medical histories between the two groups, excepted for renal failure. The rate of renal failure was significantly higher in the RAS inhibitor group than in the CCB group (p=0.013). TTF in the patients treated with RAS inhibitors were significantly longer than that with CCB (median TTF [25th–75th percentile]: 183 [61–455] vs. 153 [61–351] days, p=0.020) (Figure 2). In Cox proportional hazard analysis adjusted with age, sex, past medical history, primary cancer lesion, and type of VSP inhibitors, RAS inhibitor was a significantly independent favorable factor to TTF, compared to CCB (Hazard ratio 0.86, 95% confidence interval [0.77–0.97], p=0.011). Conclusion RAS inhibitor is associated with a favorable clinical outcome than CCB, and can be a first choice for treating hypertension during cancer therapy with VSP inhibitors. Abstract: Background Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) family is overexpressed in the tumor microenvironment and induces tumor angiogenesis.1 VEGF signaling pathway (VSP) inhibitors are essential therapeutic drugs for solid cancer patients.2 However, VSP inhibitors often provoke drug-specific anti-angiogenesis in normal tissues, which was referred to as on-target toxicity.2 Hypertension (HTN) is one of the most frequent adverse events caused by VSP inhibitors. A previous report demonstrated that VSP inhibitor-induced hypertension is a favorable prognostic factor, contrarily.3However, multiple VSP inhibitors are administered in various cancer types, and then the relation between VSP inhibitor-associated hypertension and clinical outcome is still controversial. Purpose The aim of this study is to elucidate the impacts of HTN and the timing of onset on clinical outcome during cancer therapy with VSP inhibitors. Method We reviewed 2,348 patients who were treated with VSP inhibitors from the LIFE Study database, consisting of 14 municipality-level information from claims data between 2016 and 2020. According to the timing of HTN onset mode, the patients were stratified into 3 groups; (1) new-onset HTN group (n=334): de novo development after VSP inhibitor administration, (2) pre-existing HTN group (n=1,363): existing HTN at baseline, including aggravation after VSP inhibitor initiation, and (3) no HTN group (n=651) (Figure 1). The time to treatment failure (TTF) was applied as a surrogate clinical indicator of overall survival. Event-free survival analysis with the log-rank test was conducted for time to first treatment failure amongst the 3 groups. In addition, Cox proportional hazard models adjusted with clinical characteristics were performed to investigate independent factors for TTF. Results In the event-free survival analysis, both the new-onset HTN and the pre-existing HTN were associated with prolongation of TTF, compared to the non-HTN (p Conclusion In patients treated with VSP inhibitors, both new-onset and pre-existing HTN are independent factors for a favorable clinical outcome, especially new-onset HTN after VSP inhibitors administration. Abstract: An ionosonde network consisting of a meridional chain and an equatorial pair was established in the Southeast Asian area. Three of four ionosondes are along the magnetic meridian of 100° E; two are close to the magnetic conjugate points in Northern Thailand and West Sumatra, Indonesia, and the other is near the magnetic equator in the Malay Peninsula, Thailand. The fourth ionosonde is also near the magnetic equator in Vietnam but separated by about 6.3° towards east from the meridional chain. For a preliminary data analysis, nighttime ionospheric height variations at the three stations of the meridional chain were examined. The results demonstrate that the coordination of the network has a great potential for studying ionosphere/thermosphere dynamics. Through the assistance of model calculations, thermospheric neutral winds were inferred and compared with the HWM93 empirical thermospheric wind model. Higher-order wind variations that are not represented in the empirical model were found.

26. Regional reference total electron content model over Japan based on neural network mapping techniques

Abstract: A regional reference model of total electron content (TEC) was constructed using data from the GPS Earth Observation Network (GEONET), which consists of more than 1000 Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite receivers distributed over Japan. The data covered almost one solar activity period from April 1997 to June 2007. First, TECs were determined for 32 grid points, expanding from 27 to 45° N in latitude and from 127 to 145° E in longitude at 15-min intervals. Secondly, the time-latitude variation averaged over three days was determined by using the surface harmonic functional expansion. The coefficients of the expansion were then modeled by using a neural network technique with input parameters of the season (day of the year) and solar activity (F10.7 index and sunspot number). Thus, two-dimensional TEC maps (time vs. latitude) can be obtained for any given set of solar activity and day of the year.

27. Equatorial ionospheric disturbance observed through a transequatorial HF propagation experiment

Abstract: A transequatorial radio-wave propagation experiment at shortwave frequencies (HF-TEP) was done between Shepparton, Australia, and Oarai, Japan, using the radio broadcasting signals of Radio Australia. The receiving facility at Oarai was capable of direction finding based on the MUSIC (Multiple Signal Classification) algorithm. The results were plotted in azimuth-time diagrams (AT plots). During the daytime, the propagation path was close to the great circle connecting Shepparton and Oarai, thus forming a single line in the AT plots. After sunset, off-great-circle paths, or satellite traces in the AT plot, often appeared abruptly to the west and gradually returned to the great circle direction. However, there were very few signals across the great circle to the east. The off-great-circle propagation was very similar to that previously reported and was attributed to reflection by an ionospheric structure near the equator. From the rate of change in the direction, we estimated the drift velocity of the structure to range mostly from 100 to 300 m/s eastward. Multiple instances of off-great-circle propagation with a quasi-periodicity were often observed and their spatial distance in the east-west direction was within the range of large-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances (LS-TIDs). Off-great-circle propagation events were frequently observed in the equinox seasons. Because there were many morphological similarities, the events were attributed to the onset of equatorial plasma bubbles.

Abstract: The zonal structure of radar backscatter plumes associated with Equatorial Spread F (ESF), probably modulated by atmospheric gravity waves, has been investigated with the Equatorial Atmosphere Radar (EAR) in West Sumatra, Indonesia (0.20° S, 100.32° E; dip latitude 10.1° S) and the FM-CW ionospheric sounders on the same magnetic meridian as the EAR. The occurrence locations and zonal distances of the ESF plumes were determined with multi-beam observations with the EAR. The ESF plumes drifted eastward while keeping distances of several hundred to a thousand kilometers. Comparing the occurrence of the plumes and the F-layer uplift measured by the FM-CW sounders, plumes were initiated within the scanned area around sunset only, when the F-layer altitude rapidly increased. Therefore, the PreReversal Enhancement (PRE) is considered as having a zonal variation with the scales mentioned above, and this variation causes day-to-day variability, which has been studied for a long time. Modulation of the underlying E-region conductivity by gravity waves, which causes inhomogeneous sporadic-E layers, for example, is a likely mechanism to determine the scale of the PRE.

29. Simultaneous observation of sporadic E with a rapid-run ionosonde and VHF coherent backscatter radar

Abstract: During the SEEK 2 rocket campaign, ionograms were recorded every minute at the Yamagawa Radio Observatory at about 90km west of the region monitored by a VHF (very high frequency) coherent backscatter radar. Sporadic E-layer parameters, which include the critical (foEs) and blanketing (fbEs) frequencies, the layer height (h'Es), and the width of the range spread of sporadic E-traces, were compared with RTI (range-time-intensity) plots of VHF quasi-periodic (QP) and continuous coherent backscatter echoes. A close relationship was found between the appearance of QP echoes in the RTI plots and the level of spatial inhomogeneity in sporadic E plasma, signified here by the difference between foEs and fbEs. During QP echo events, foEs increased while fbEs decreased, so that the difference foEs-fbEs was enhanced, indicating the development of strong spatial structuring in electron density within a sporadic E-layer. On the other hand, increases in sporadic E range spreading also correlated with the occurrence of QP echoes but the degree of correlation varied from event to event. Continuous radar echoes were observed in association with low altitude sporadic E-layers, located well below 100 km and at times as low as 90 km. During the continuous echo events, both foEs and fbEs were less variable, and the difference foEs-fbEs was small and not as dynamic as in the QP echoes. On the other hand, the Es-layer spread intensified during continuous echoes, which means that some patchiness or corrugation in those low altitude layers is also necessary for the continuous backscatter echoes to take place.

30. Derivation of TEC and estimation of instrumental biases from GEONET in Japan

Abstract: This paper presents a method to derive the ionospheric total electron content (TEC) and to estimate the biases of GPS satellites and dual frequency receivers using the GPS Earth Observation Network (GEONET) in Japan. Based on the consideration that the TEC is uniform in a small area, the method divides the ionosphere over Japan into 32 meshes. The size of each mesh is 2° by 2° in latitude and longitude, respectively. By assuming that the TEC is identical at any point within a given mesh and the biases do not vary within a day, the method arranges unknown TECs and biases with dual GPS data from about 209 receivers in a day unit into a set of equations. Then the TECs and the biases of satellites and receivers were determined by using the least-squares fitting technique. The performance of the method is examined by applying it to geomagnetically quiet days in various seasons, and then comparing the GPS-derived TEC with ionospheric critical frequencies (foF2). It is found that the biases of GPS satellites and most receivers are very stable. The diurnal and seasonal variation in TEC and foF2 shows a high degree of conformity. The method using a highly dense receiver network like GEONET is not always applicable in other areas. Thus, the paper also proposes a simpler and faster method to estimate a single receiver’s bias by using the satellite biases determined from GEONET. The accuracy of the simple method is examined by comparing the receiver biases determined by the two methods. Abstract: We report measurements of the flux-integrated ν̅μ and ν̅μ + νμ charged-current cross-sections on water and hydrocarbon targets using the T2K anti-neutrino beam with a mean beam energy of 0.86 GeV. The signal is defined as the (anti-)neutrino charged-current interaction with one induced $\mu^\pm$ and no detected charged pion or proton. These measurements are performed using a new WAGASCI module recently added to the T2K setup in combination with the INGRID Proton Module. 32. Heliospheric current sheet inclinations at Venus and Earth

Abstract: We investigate the inclinations of heliospheric current sheet at two sites in interplanetary space, which are generated from the same solar source. From the data of solar wind magnetic fields observed at Venus (0.72 AU) and Earth (1 AU) during December 1978-May 1982 including the solar maximum of 1981, 54 pairs of candidate sector boundary crossings are picked out, of which 16 pairs are identified as sector boundaries. Of the remainder, 12 pairs are transient structures both at Venus and Earth, and 14 pairs are sector boundaries at one site and have transient structures at the other site. It implies that transient structures were often ejected from the coronal streamer belt around the solar maximum. For the 16 pairs of selected sector boundaries, we determine their normals by using minimum variance analysis. It is found that most of the normal azimuthal angles are distributed between the radial direction and the direction perpendicular to the spiral direction both at Venus and Earth. The normal elevations tend to be smaller than ~ 45° with respect to the solar equatorial plane, indicating high inclinations of the heliospheric current sheet, in particular at Earth. The larger scatter in the azimuth and elevation of normals at Venus than at Earth suggests stronger effects of the small-scale structures on the current sheet at 0.72 AU than at 1 AU. When the longitude difference between Venus and Earth is small (° longitudinally), similar or the same inclinations are generally observed, especially for the sector boundaries without small-scale structures. This implies that the heliospheric current sheet inclination tends to be maintained during propagation of the solar wind from 0.72 AU to 1 AU. Detailed case studies reveal that the dynamic nature of helmet streamers causes variations of the sector boundary structure.Key words. 34. A novel nonsense mutation (G181X) in the human cholesteryl ester transfer protein gene in Japanese hyperalphalipoproteinemic subjects

Abstract: Cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) plays an important role in regulating the concentration and composition of high density lipoprotein (HDL) and low density lipoprotein (LDL). Although several genetic abnormalities causing CETP deficiency have been identified in the Japanese subjects with a marked hyperalphalipoproteinemia (HALP), there are many CETP-deficient subjects for whom the genetic abnormalities have not been clarified. In the present study, we analyzed the molecular basis of an HALP subject without CETP activity and mass, and found a novel mutation in the CETP gene. This novel mutation (G181X) was a G-to-T substitution at codon 181 of exon 6 which replaced a codon for glycine (GGA) with a premature stop codon (TGA). The G181X mutation created a new cutting site by restriction enzyme MaeIII. To estimate the frequency of G181X, we investigated unrelated 294 HALP (HDL-cholesterol > or = 2.59 mmol/L = 100 mg/dl) subjects by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis with Mae III. One (0.34%) HALP subject was homozygous and four (1.36%) were heterozygous for this mutation. The allelic frequency of a G-to-T substitution at codon 181 of exon 6 was 0.0102 in HALP subjects. From the lipid analysis of the proband and the homozygote, it was clarified that the G181X mutation had dominant effects on HDL and LDL metabolism, similar to a G-to-A substitution at the 5' splice donor site of the intron 14 (1451 + 1G–>A). In conclusion, the G181X mutation is one of causes of HALP in the Japanese HALP subjects, having dominant effects on lipid metabolism.

Abstract: Background Catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation (AF) with high contact force (CF) has been reported to lead to the gaps after pulmonary vein isolation (PVI), and the appearance of the gaps depends on the site in the left atrium (LA). RF energy (J), number of RF point, Lesion index (LSI), force-time integral (FTI), average CF (g), and the degree of LA depression with high CF were evaluated. In the experimental study (figure), the relationship between the ablation area and the degree of depression with high CF using bovine left ventricular wall. Results In the clinical study, the gaps were found in 175 of 1182 sites after first path PVI ablation. The CF in the gap sites was higher than without the gap sites in RPV roof, anterior RSPV and anterior RPV carina (18.9±6.8 vs 15.0±5.7g p=0.0262, 26.4±11.6 vs 19.5±6.0g p=0.0029, 22.7±6.4 vs 19.1±5.5g, p=0.0161). Meanwhile, there were no differences in RF energy, number of RF point, LSI, FTI. High CF (≥30g) showed a depression of 3 mm or more in only RPV roof and anterior RPV (figure). In the experimental study, the ablation range narrowed as the indentation deepened with more than 30g CF (r=0.6417, p=0.0625). Conclusion Catheter ablation for AF with high contact force might lead to the gaps in RPV roof and anterior RPV site by the reduction of the ablation area due to depression caused by the pressure. Abstract: The JSNS$^{2}$ (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) experiment aims to search for neutrino oscillations over a 24 m short baseline at J-PARC. The JSNS$^{2}$ inner detector is filled with 17 tons of gadolinium(Gd)-loaded liquid scintillator (LS) with an additional 31 tons of unloaded LS in the intermediate $\gamma$-catcher and an optically separated outer veto volumes. A total of 120 10-inch photomultiplier tubes observe the scintillating optical photons and each analog waveform is stored with the flash analog-to-digital converters. We present details of the data acquisition, processing, and data quality monitoring system. We also present two different trigger logics which are developed for the beam and self-trigger.

Abstract: The JSNS$^2$ experiment is aimed to search for sterile neutrino oscillations using a neutrino beam from muon decays at rest. The JSNS$^2$ detector contains 17 tons of 0.1\% gadolinium (Gd) loaded liquid scintillator (LS) as a neutrino target. Detector construction was completed in the spring of 2020. A slow control and monitoring system (SCMS) was implemented for reliable control and quick monitoring of the detector operational status and environmental conditions. It issues an alarm if any of the monitored parameters exceed a preset acceptable range. The SCMS monitors the high voltage (HV) of the photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), the LS level in the detector, possible LS overflow and leakage, the temperature and air pressure in the detector, the humidity of the experimental hall, and the LS flow rate during filling and extraction. An initial 10 days of data-taking with a neutrino beam was done following a successful commissioning of the detector and SCMS in June 2020. Abstract: We report the measurements of single and double differential cross section of muon neutrino charged-current interactions on carbon with a single positively charged pion in the final state at the T2K off-axis near detector using $5.56\times10^{20}$ protons on target. The analysis uses data control samples for the background subtraction and the cross section signal, defined as a single negatively charged muon and a single positively charged pion exiting from the target nucleus, is extracted using an unfolding method. The model dependent cross section, integrated over the T2K off-axis neutrino beam spectrum peaking at $0.6$~GeV, is measured to be $\sigma = (11.76 \pm 0.44 \text{(stat)} \pm 2.39 \text{(syst)}) \times 10^{-40} \text{cm}^2$~$\text{nucleon}^{-1}$. Various differential cross sections are measured, including the first measurement of the Adler angles for single charged pion production in neutrino interactions with heavy nuclei target.

Abstract: Structures of robotic systems that handle extremely heavy loads undergo static displacement. The ITER blanket remote handling system, which handles 4-ton objects, has displacements of up to 100 mm at the end effector. We propose a novel method that combines deep learning with a physics-based virtual reality system to compensate for displacement. Our deep learning model was trained by using data obtained from both the virtual reality system and physical measurement data of end effector positions. By using a prototype of the ITER blanket remote handling system, we experimentally show that our method successfully reduces the displacement at the end effector to a maximum error of 5.7 mm and a median error of 1.2 mm. We conclude that our approach provides an effective contribution to ensuring the feasibility and safety of the remote maintenance procedures that are to be performed within the ITER project.

Abstract: The electron (anti-)neutrino component of the T2K neutrino beam constitutes the largest background in the measurement of electron (anti-)neutrino appearance at the far detector. The electron neutrino scattering is measured directly with the T2K off-axis near detector, ND280. The selection of the electron (anti-)neutrino events in the plastic scintillator target from both neutrino and anti-neutrino mode beams is discussed in this paper. The flux integrated single differential charged-current inclusive electron (anti-)neutrino cross-sections, dσ/dp and dσ/d cos(θ), and the total cross-sections in a limited phase-space in momentum and scattering angle (p > 300 MeV/c and θ ≤ 45°) are measured using a binned maximum likelihood fit and compared to the neutrino Monte Carlo generator predictions, resulting in good agreement., Journal of High Energy Physics, 2020 (10), ISSN:1126-6708, ISSN:1029-8479

Abstract: For a first-of-a-kind nuclear fusion reactor like ITER, remote maintainability of neutron-activated and contaminated components is one of the key aspects of plant design and operations, hence a fundamental ingredient of its success, as well as of the demonstration of long-term viability of fusion as an energy source. The whole ITER Remote Maintenance System (IRMS) is of unprecedented complexity and includes specifically developed technologies. Its procurement and start of operation will represent a major innovation to maintenance in hostile environments. Europe is a key contributor, with three remote handling (RH) systems, a.k.a. packages, plus a robotic inspection and metrology tool, currently under design. This paper gives an update on the status of design and procurement activities related to the IRMS. It will first introduce some key aspects of the reactor remote maintainability, and then give an overview of the present configuration of the global system. After this, the scope, status and challenges of the European (EU) packages will be illustrated in more detail, together with some key technological developments. Finally, the way all these efforts are coordinated will be presented together with the overall implementation scenario and milestones, and the way they fit with ITER construction and operation.

Abstract: Electron antineutrino appearance is measured by the T2K experiment in an accelerator-produced antineutrino beam, using additional neutrino beam operation to constrain parameters of the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata (PMNS) mixing matrix. T2K observes 15 candidate electron antineutrino events with a background expectation of 9.3 events. Including information from the kinematic distribution of observed events, the hypothesis of no electron antineutrino appearance is disfavored with a significance of 2.40 σ and no discrepancy between data and PMNS predictions is found. Abstract: This short paper presents the statistics of spread-F occurrence at four low-mid latitude locations (17.0° N, 21.2° N, 26.5° N and 36.5° N mag. lat.) in Japan longitude sector (~ 135° E) in March to April 2002, 2003 and 2006 (high, medium and low solar activity). The location of a spread-F minimum predicted by theoretical models is identified for the first time. The spread-F minimum occurs at the poleward side of the equatorial ionisation anomaly crest and shifts equatorward from ~ 25° N mag. lat. at high solar activity to below 17° N at low solar activity. The corresponding spread-F maximum occurring on the poleward side of the minimum also shifts equatorward from ~ 35° N (or beyond) at medium solar activity to 20°–25° N at low solar activity. The spread-F occurrence increases with decreasing solar activity at all locations especially at higher latitudes (> ~ 25° N) where there is almost no occurrence at high solar activity.

Abstract: The Heavy Photon Search (HPS) is an experiment to search for a hidden sector photon, aka a heavy photon or dark photon, in fixed target electroproduction at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab). The HPS experiment searches for the e$^+$e$^-$ decay of the heavy photon with bump hunt and detached vertex strategies using a compact, large acceptance forward spectrometer, consisting of a silicon microstrip detector (SVT) for tracking and vertexing, and a PbWO$_4$ electromagnetic calorimeter for energy measurement and fast triggering. To achieve large acceptance and good vertexing resolution, the first layer of silicon detectors is placed just 10 cm downstream of the target with the sensor edges only 500 $\mu$m above and below the beam. Placing the SVT in such close proximity to the beam puts stringent requirements on the beam profile and beam position stability. As part of an approved engineering run, HPS took data in 2015 and 2016 at 1.05 GeV and 2.3 GeV beam energies, respectively. This paper describes the beam line and its performance during that data taking.

Abstract: The crystal orientation of body centered cubic (bcc) precipitates embedded in hexagonal close packed (hcp) matrix is usually assumed to follow the so-called Burgers orientation relationship; however, this orientation relationship may not be maintained in the case where the precipitation occurs in parallel with the recrystallization of matrix. The Zr-2.5Nb alloy is a typical example of such a case. In the present study crystal orientations of bcc precipitates (Nb-rich β2 phase and Zr-rich β1 phase) in fully recrystallized hcp Zr matrix have been analyzed by means of electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and transmission Kikuchi diffraction (TKD). Based on the Euler angles determined by EBSD/TKD, the parallelism of atomic planes was examined one by one. The analysis was performed on 100 precipitates for each composition. The crystal orientations of the Nb-rich precipitates were practically random, whereas 28% of the Zr-rich precipitates followed the Burgers orientation relationship. Moreover, the fraction of the Nb-rich precipitates whose slip planes, either {110} or {112}, were parallel to those of the hcp Zr matrix, { 10 1 ¯ 0 }, was no greater than 5%. These results support a tentative conclusion of our previous study that the Nb precipitates are ideal Orowan type strong obstacles against gliding dislocations due to the crystal mismatch, even though they are softer than the matrix in terms of shear modulus.

Abstract: In the fields of engineering, nanoscience, and biomechanics, thin structural members, such as beams, plates, and shells, that are supported by an elastic medium are used in several applications. There is a possibility that these thin structures might buckle under severe loading conditions; higher-order, complicated elastic buckling modes can be found owing to the balance of rigidities between the thin members and elastic supports. In this study, we have shown a new and simple ‘power law’ relation between the critical buckling strain (or loads) and rigidity parameters in structural members supported by an elastic medium, which can be modelled as a Winkler foundation. The following structural members have been considered in this paper: i) a slender beam held by an outer elastic support under axial loading, ii) cylindrical shells supported by an inner elastic core under hydrostatic pressure (plane strain condition), and iii) complete spherical shells that are filled with an inner elastic medium.

Abstract: Introduction Long-acting loop diuretics have a possibility of better prognosis compared to short-acting loop diuretics in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). Purpose To investigate the effect of long- and short-acting loop diuretics in patients with HFpEF. Methods From the Clue of Risk Stratification in Patients With Heart Failure Registry (CURE-HF Registry), we enrolled 301 consecutive patients with HFpEF (median age, 84 years; 55% female). Long-acting loop diuretics (azosemide) were administrated in 127 patients, and short-acting loop diuretics (furosemide) in 174 patients. We constructed Cox models for MACE (defined as a composite of all-cause death, non-fatal myocardial infarction, non-fatal stroke, and heart failure [HF] hospitalization). Results During a median follow-up of 317 [174–734] days, the primary endpoint occurred in 129 patients (42.8%). On multivariate inverse probability of treatment weighted (IPTW) Cox modeling, patients treated with long-acting loop diuretics had a significantly lower incidence of adverse events than those treated with short-acting loop diuretics (hazard ratio [HR], 0.39; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.23–0.67; P=0.001). Furthermore, on multivariate IPTW Cox modeling for the secondary endpoints, all-cause mortality (HR, 0.50; 95% CI, 0.20–0.80; P=0.01) and unplanned hospitalization for decompensated HF (HR, 0.50; 95% CI, 0.28–0.89; P=0.018) were also reduced in patients treated with long-acting loop diuretics. Conclusions Long-acting loop diuretics reduced the risk of MACE compared to short-acting diuretics in patients with HFpEF.

Abstract: The JSNS$^{2}$ (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) experiment will search for neutrino oscillations over a 24 m short baseline at J-PARC. The JSNS$^{2}$ inner detector will be filled with 17 tons of gadolinium-loaded liquid scintillator (LS) with an additional 31 tons of unloaded LS in the intermediate $\gamma$-catcher and outer veto volumes. JSNS$^{2}$ has chosen Linear Alkyl Benzene (LAB) as an organic solvent because of its chemical properties. The unloaded LS was produced at a refurbished facility, originally used for scintillator production by the RENO experiment. JSNS$^{2}$ plans to use ISO tanks for the storage and transportation of the LS. In this paper, we describe the LS production, and present measurements of its optical properties and long term stability. Our measurements show that storing the LS in ISO tanks does not result in degradation of its optical properties., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures
