1. Rod-Type Ce/Cr/Nd : YAG Ceramic Lasers with White-Light Pump Source

Abstract

Ceramic is promising for use as a solid-laser material pumped with solar or lamp light. We developed a Cr3+ ion doped Nd : YAG ceramic laser that converts white light into near-infrared laser light more efficiently. Investigation of its optical properties has revealed that large gain can be realized with excitation power that is one order of magnitude less than that in the case of Nd : YAG. Ce3+ ion doping also makes it possible to utilize the excitation light components with wavelengths of 350 nm or less, preventing generation of color centers. A rod-type Ce3+/Cr3+/Nd : YAG ceramic pumped by white light such as solar light or flash lamp light was developed. Fluorescence lifetime of ceramic was measured. Laser oscillations at free running mode were observed. Also, numerical calculation for output laser power and gain at lasing threshold was performed. Fluorescence lifetime increased as temperature rose, which was observed in Cr/Nd : YAG ceramic. This increase suggests the existence of a cross-relaxation effect. Maximum output laser energy of 73 mJ with the peak power of 330 W was obtained. Obtained output laser energy was around twice more than that in case of Cr3+/Nd : YAG ceramic with the same Nd and Cr ion concentration.

For verifying performance of this observing system, fatigue tests were carried out by using fatigue specimen having a small artificial defect. Abstract

We report the result from a search for charged-current coherent pion production induced by muon neutrinos with a mean energy of 1.3 GeV. The data are collected with a fully active scintillator detector in the K2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. No evidence for coherent pion production is observed and an upper limit of $0.60 \times 10^{-2}$ is set on the cross section ratio of coherent pion production to the total charged-current interaction at 90% confidence level. This is the first experimental limit for coherent charged pion production in the energy region of a few GeV., 5 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We report searches for B0→invisible and B0→invisible+γ decays, where the energy of the photon is required to be larger than 0.5 GeV. These results are obtained from a 711 fb-1 data sample that contains 772×106BB¯ pairs and was collected near the ϒ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- collider. We observe no significant signal for either decay and set upper limits on their branching fractions at 90% confidence level of B(B0→invisible)

Abstract

In high-frequency pulsed magnets, such as kickers in particle accelerators, it is essential to reduce eddy currents that could be induced in the magnet core during excitation not to distort and attenuate the magnetic field pulse. A novel iron lamination scheme with additional interlaminar insulation is proposed for the magnet core of such pulsed magnets. A laminated steel sheet core is formed by alternately stacking thin steel and insulation sheets. For application to matched kicker magnets for accelerators, test magnets with the new and conventional iron lamination were designed, assembled, and extensively evaluated. The pulsed magnetic field waveforms of two test magnets with the new lamination successfully matched to below 0.1% over the entire pulse duration, which was significantly better than those with the conventional lamination. Among the applications of the developed high-frequency pulsed magnets, beam injection kickers for the coming next generation light sources and future colliders, where suppression of the transient stored-beam oscillation during beam injection is crucial, are considered to be promising.

Abstract

A fast-cycling induction synchrotron was demonstrated. Ions with extremely low energies and mass-to-charge ratios (A/Q) in the range from 2 to 10 were injected, captured by barrier voltages, and accelerated to the end of the acceleration cycle of 50 ms by flat pulse voltages generated by pulse transformers referred to as induction cells. Induction acceleration in a wide dynamic frequency range of 56 kHz to 1 MHz was also demonstrated. This accelerator is expected as the next generation of a heavy ion driver for cancer therapy, where a large scale injector is not required. A wide variety of ions for ion energy implantation experiments needing novel materials will be delivered from this compact circular accelerator.

Abstract

The High Energy Accelerator Research Organization KEK digital accelerator (KEK-DA) is a renovation of the KEK 500 MeV booster proton synchrotron, which was shut down in 2006. The existing 40 MeV drift tube linac and rf cavities have been replaced by an electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion source embedded in a 200 kV high-voltage terminal and induction acceleration cells, respectively. A DA is, in principle, capable of accelerating any species of ion in all possible charge states. The KEK-DA is characterized by specific accelerator components such as a permanent magnet X-band ECR ion source, a low-energy transport line, an electrostatic injection kicker, an extraction septum magnet operated in air, combined-function main magnets, and an induction acceleration system. The induction acceleration method, integrating modern pulse power technology and state-of-art digital control, is crucial for the rapid-cycle KEK-DA. The key issues of beam dynamics associated with low-energy injection of heavy ions are beam loss caused by electron capture and stripping as results of the interaction with residual gas molecules and the closed orbit distortion resulting from relatively high remanent fields in the bending magnets. Attractive applications of this accelerator in materials and biological sciences are discussed.

Abstract

Multi-asset class, multimarket central counterparties (CCPs) are becoming less uncommon as a result of merges between specialized (single-asset class, single market) CCPs and market demands for greater capital efficiency. Yet, traditional CCP risk management models often lack the necessary sophistication to estimate potential losses relative to the closeout process of a defaulter’s portfolio in a multi-asset class, multimarket environment. As a result, multi-asset class, multimarket CCPs usually rely on a simplified silo approach for risk calculation which not only fails to deliver efficiency, but may also increase systemic risk. The CORE (Closeout Risk Evaluation) approach, on the other hand, provides conceptual and mathematical tools necessary for robust and efficient central counterparty risk evaluation in multi-asset class and multimarket environments, acknowledging the portfolio dynamics involved in the closeout process as well as important “real life” market frictions.

Abstract

This paper reports the early beam commissioning of the KEK digital accelerator, which consists of novel accelerator components such as a permanent-magnet x-band electron cyclotron resonance ion source, an Einzel lens longitudinal chopper, an electrostatic injection kicker, and induction acceleration devices. The performance of the Einzel lens longitudinal chopper is described together with the results of beam commissioning, including the beam orbit correction, barrier bucket bunch capture, and induction acceleration.

Abstract

Extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) is known to be phosphorylated after exposure to noxious stimuli. In this study, we investigated the response in the dura mater to nociceptive stimulation, which is thought to be responsible for the pathogenesis of headaches, including migraines. We also examined the level of ERK phosphorylation in the trigeminal ganglion following cortical spreading depression (CSD), which is thought to play an important role in migraine pathophysiology. Western blot and immunohistochemical analyses showed a significant increase in the ERK phosphorylation levels 3 min following an application of 10mM capsaicin to the dura mater. This increase was inhibited after an application of the TRPV1 antagonist capsazepine or a MEK inhibitor. An immunohistochemical analysis revealed that most of the small-sized trigeminal ganglion neurons with TRPV1-immunoreactivity that innervate the dura mater exhibited pERK-immunoreactivity, suggesting that these neurons had responded to nociceptive stimulation. CSD increased the level of ERK phosphorylation 30 min after its elicitation, and this response was inhibited by a prior intraventricular administration of TRPV1 antagonist. These results indicate that CSD can activate dural TRPV1 to send nociceptive signals to the trigeminal system, and they provide important clues regarding the relationship between CSD and the trigeminovascular system.

Abstract

The magnetic properties of the Blume–Emery–Griffiths(BEG) model [1] with fractional large spin(S=3/2 and S=5/2) on two-dimensional square lattice are discussed by making use of the Monte Carlo (MC) simulation for the magnetization 〈Sz〉, sublattice magnetizations 〈Sz(A)〉 and 〈Sz(B)〉, the magnetic specific heat CM and spin structures. The ground state phase diagram of these models has been obtained for exchange parameter J2/J1 and anisotropy parameter D/J1. The temperature dependence of sublattice magnetizations 〈Sz(A)〉 and 〈Sz(B)〉 is investigated for various values of the anisotropy D. The relations between the Curie temperature Tc and the critical temperature Ts at which sublattice magnetizations begin taking different values are also studied.

Abstract

TRPV1 is a nonselective cation channel in nociceptors. TRPV1 stimulation has been shown to lead to the activation of microglia and astrocytes in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord. However, information on the effect of TRPV1 stimulation on glial activation in the trigeminal nucleus caudalis (TNC) is lacking. Here, we stimulated TRPV1 in the trigeminal afferents by a repetitive injection of 10 mmol/l capsaicin into the whisker pad for 2 days (d2 group), 4 days (d4 group), or 6 days (d6 group). As a control (c group), the vehicle was injected for 2 days. Anti-Iba1 and anti-glial fibrillary acidic protein antibodies were used to immunostain microglia and astrocytes in the TNC, respectively. The ratio of the cross-sectional area immunoreactive for Iba1 to the entire area of the TNC was increased in the d2 group compared with the c group on the injected side. Microglia were recruited to the superficial layers of the TNC. The numbers of microglia were reduced in the d4 group and the d6 group compared with the d2 group. The ratio of the cross-sectional area immunoreactive for glial fibrillary acidic protein to the entire TNC showed a significant increase in d2 group and the d4 group compared with the c group on the injected side. Behavioral analysis indicated that mechanical allodynia began to develop after 2 days of capsaicin treatment and persisted for at least 6 days after the onset of the repetitive capsaicin injection. These data indicate that TRPV1 stimulation activates the microglia and astrocytes in temporally distinct ways and that the development of mechanical allodynia is independent of such glial activation.

Abstract

To substitute for a traditional replication technique, an in-situ fatigue crack observing system for rotating bending testing machine has been newly developed. For verifying performance of this observing system, fatigue tests were carried out by using fatigue specimen having a small artificial defect. It is proved that this system can be detect a small fatigue crack and its propagation behavior.

Abstract

We report the results of a study of B KIrk and /II K tic(2S) decays followed by qc and '/c(2S) decays to (K5K7). The results are obtained from a data sample containing 535 million BB-meson pairs collected by the Belle experiment at the KEKB e+e- collider. We measure the products of the branching fractions B(B > IC7ic)13(71, Ks K 7T) = (26.7 1.4(stat)+N(syst) 4.9(model)) x 10-6 and 8(B -+ K 71c(25))8(rIc(2S) Ksi(7tT) = (3.4+N(stat + model)t(syst)) x 10-6. Interference with the non-resonant component leads to significant model uncertainty in the measurement of these product branching fractions. Our analysis accounts for this interference and allows the model uncertainty to be reduced. We also obtain the following charmonia masses and widths: MO/c) = (2985.4 1.5(stat)1:8(syst)) MeV /c2, r(t1c)= (35.1 3.1(sta0+1:2(syst)) MeV/c2, M(ric (2S)) = (3636.111(stat + model)+3:70 (syst)) MeV/c2, r (17c (2S)) = (6.61:1(stat + model)11(syst)) MeV/c2. Abstract

A needle-type water content sensor with a polyethersulfone (PES, poly(4-phenoxy-co-4-benzensulfone)) polymer membrane is proposed for the low-invasive, direct in situ measurement of plant water content (PWC). When the PWC sensor is inserted into a plant, the electrical impedance of PES is determined by the amount of absorbed water, which indicates the PWC. In situ measurement of PWC was successfully demonstrated for a strawberry plant (Fragaria × ananassa) and the application feasibility of the sensor to in situ PWC measurement for irrigation agriculture was verified.

Abstract

Studies are being conducted to develop a digital accelerator capable of accelerating ions with any charge state, based on the concept of the induction synchrotron. The digital accelerator is a modification of the KEK 500 MeV booster which employs induction acceleration. The digital accelerator is operated at a repetition rate of 10 Hz. The accelerating pulse voltage is dynamically varied from 0 V to 2.4 kV. A novel technique combining the pulse trigger control and intermittent operation of multi-acceleration cells is developed. The acceleration scheme of the digital accelerator is verified by using computer simulations and it is demonstrated at our test facility by using a beam simulator to mimic a circulating beam-bunch signal in the KEK digital accelerator.

Abstract

An all-ion accelerator (AIA)—capable of accelerating all ions of any possible charge state and mass—based on the induction synchrotron concept is under study. This concept was demonstrated in 2006, wherein confinement and acceleration of a proton bunch was independently carried out by the induction cells. In the induction synchrotron based systems, unlike RF synchrotron, the operation frequency of an induction cell is not a limitation, since it generates acceleration voltage by generating trigger signals in synchronization with the bunch signal from the monitors. For the proof of principle experiment of AIA, argon ions is planned to be accelerated in the KEK-PS booster ring (KEK-BR). KEK-BR, operated as a rapid cycle synchrotron at 20 Hz frequency, requires a dynamic acceleration voltage throughout acceleration period. The acceleration voltage pulse provided by the induction cells is fixed in amplitude; therefore a new acceleration scheme using fixed output voltage from the induction acceleration cells is worked out using simulations. This paper discusses the new acceleration scheme for the AIA, its simulation results and a new induction cell giving long acceleration voltage pulse required for AIA. Then various issues are discussed from the practical point of view.

Abstract

We report results on studies of the e(+)e(-) annihilation into three-body Upsilon(nS)pi(+)pi(-) (n = 1, 2, 3) final states including measurements of cross sections and the full amplitude analysis. The cross sections measured at root s = 10.866 GeV and corrected for the initial state radiation are sigma(e(+)e(-) --> Upsilon(1S)pi(+)pi(-)) = (2.27 +/- 0.12 +/- 0.14) pb, sigma(e(+)e(-) --> Upsilon(2S)pi(+)pi(-)) = (4.07 +/- 0.16 +/- 0.45) pb, and sigma(e(+)e(-) --> Upsilon(3S)pi(+)pi(-)) = (1.46 +/- 0.09 +/- 0.16) pb. Amplitude analysis of the three-body Upsilon(nS)pi(+)pi(-) final states strongly favors I-G(J(P)) = 1(+)(1(+)) quantum-number assignments for the two bottomonium-like Z(b)(+/-) states, recently observed in the Upsilon(nS)pi(+) and h(b)(mP)pi(+)(m = 1, 2) decay channels. The results are obtained with a 121.4 fb(-1) data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider.

Abstract

We present a search for the rare leptonic decays B+ -> e(+)nu(e) and B+ -> mu(+) nu(mu) using the full Upsilon(4S) data sample of 772 x 10(6) B (B) over bar pairs collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider. One of the B mesons from the Upsilon(4S) -> B (B) over bar decay is fully reconstructed in a hadronic mode, while the recoiling side is analyzed for the signal decay. We find no evidence of a signal in any of the decay modes. Upper limits of the corresponding branching fractions are determined as beta(B+ -> e(+)nu(e)) mu(+)nu(mu)) < 2.7 x 10(-6) at 90% confidence level.

Abstract

This work examines the winding of film from one free reel to a driven reel using both a pseudo-derivative feedback (PDF) and a proportional-integral-derivative (PID)-controlled servomotor. Measurements are compared with a theoretical model simulated with Simulink®. In this work, only the velocity of the film was controlled after measurement with an optical encoder; tension in the film was not controlled. The measurements and control were executed on a personal computer using LabVIEW®. Overall both controllers could cope with the range of full and empty reels for a demand velocity step of 1 m/s but the PDF controller could cope with a demand for 2 m/s. Rise times of less than 500 ms were obtained for both controllers with the best PID controller faster at around 130 ms. The motor current required for the PDF controller was less than that for the PID system. Tension forces were, as predicted, higher with PID control; therefore the overall steady state average error was zero for both controllers. The results show that the rise time differences to achieve steady state in the case when opposite spools were full were less for the PID controller.

Abstract

We present measurements of nu_mu disappearance in K2K, the KEK to Kamioka long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. One hundred and twelve beam-originated neutrino events are observed in the fiducial volume of Super-Kamiokande with an expectation of 158.1^{+9.2}_{-8.6} events without oscillation. A distortion of the energy spectrum is also seen in 58 single-ring muon-like events with reconstructed energies. The probability that the observations are explained by the expectation for no neutrino oscillation is 0.0015% (4.3sigma). In a two flavor oscillation scenario, the allowed Delta m^2 region at sin^2(2theta) is between 1.9 and 3.5 x 10^{-3} eV^2 at the 90% C.L. with a best-fit value of 2.8 x 10^{-3} eV^2., Comment: 40 pages, 48 figures

Abstract

Super-Kamiokande is the world's largest water Cherenkov detector, with net mass 50,000 tons. During the period April, 1996 to July, 2001, Super-Kamiokande I collected 1678 live-days of data, observing neutrinos from the Sun, Earth's atmosphere, and the K2K long-baseline neutrino beam with high efficiency. These data provided crucial information for our current understanding of neutrino oscillations, as well as setting stringent limits on nucleon decay. In this paper, we describe the detector in detail, including its site, configuration, data acquisition equipment, online and offline software, and calibration systems which were used during Super-Kamiokande I.

The K2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment uses a Scintillating Fiber Detector (SciFi) to reconstruct charged particles produced in neutrino interactions in the near detector.
