1. Measurement of spin correlation coefficients p-$^{3}$He scattering at 65 MeV

Abstract: We performed the experiment of p–$^{3}$He scattering at 65 MeV by using polarized proton beams and the newly constructed polarized $^{3}$He target. The proton analyzing power $A_{y}$, the 3He analyzing power $A^{T}_{y}$, and the spin correlation coefficient $C_{yy}$ were measured. In the conference, the experimental data were compared with the rigorous numerical calculations based on various nuclear potentials. Large discrepancies between the experimental data and the calculations were found in the $A^{T}_{y}$ and the $C_{yy}$ at the backward angles.

Abstract: Proton–3He scattering is one of the good probes to study the T = 3/2 channel of three– nucleon forces. We have measured 3He analyzing powers for p−3He elastic scattering with the polarized 3He target at 70 and 100 MeV. In the conference the data were com- pared with the theoretical predictions based on the modern nucleon–nucleon potentials. Large discrepancies were found between the data and the calculations at the angles where the 3He analyzing power takes the minimum and maximum values.

Abstract: A 3He spin filter is a useful device for polarizing a neutron beam. We are developing the 3He spin filters for users of the material and life science facility of the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J‑PARC). An in situ SEOP system with a 3He polarization evaluation system using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) method of adiabatic fast passage and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) was developed. We conducted an experiment on the neutron beam line BL10 (NOBORU) of J-PARC to confirm the consistency of 3He polarization, estimated using the neutron transmission, NMR and EPR. The polarization of 3He, evaluated using the different methods, was consistent and the evaluation system operated normally for about 6 h.

6. The first polarized neutron diffraction experiment at the time-of-flight single crystal neutron diffractometer SENJU at J-PARC

Abstract: The 3He spin filter has been developed to use pulsed neutrons effectively at J-PARC MLF. In this study, the 3He spin filter was installed in the single crystal neutron diffractometer (BL18 SENJU) at J-PARC MLF as a polarizer of the incident beam, and Half-polarized neutron diffraction experiments were performed. The 3He spin filter was used the ”drop-in cell” method with cells that had a relaxation time of 150 hours in the past experiments. The sample was a single crystal of Heusler crystal Cu2MnAl and the sample magnetic field was 0.3 T. The intensities of (111) Bragg peaks of Cu2MnAl were drastically changed with the polarity of the incident neutron beam, and the flipping ratio of 21.7 at 3.6 Å was observed. The experimental setup and the performance of the 3He spin filter used in this experiment are described in detail in this paper.

7. Status of the new muonic helium atom HFS measurements at J-PARC MUSE

Abstract: Measurements of the muonic helium atom hyperfine structure (HFS) are a sensitive tool to test the theory of three-body atomic systems and bound-state quantum electrodynamics (QED) and to determine fundamental constants of the negative muon magnetic moment and mass. The world’s most intense pulsed negative muon beam at J-PARC MUSE brings an opportunity to improve previous measurements and test further CPT invariance by comparing the magnetic moments and masses of positive and negative muons. Test measurements at D-line are now in progress utilizing MuSEUM apparatus at zero field. The first results already have better accuracy than previous measurements in the 1980s. Also, the investigation of a new experimental approach to improve HFS measurements by repolarizing muonic helium atoms using a spin-exchange optical pumping (SEOP) technique was started. If successful, this would drastically improve the measurement accuracy.

Abstract: We present a precise measurement of the cross section, proton and $\rm ^3He$ analyzing powers, and spin correlation coefficient $C_{y,y}$ for $p$-$\rm ^3He$ elastic scattering near 65 MeV, and a comparison with rigorous four-nucleon scattering calculations based on realistic nuclear potentials and a model with $\Delta$-isobar excitation. Clear discrepancies are seen in some of the measured observables in the regime around the cross section minimum. Theoretical predictions using scaling relations between the calculated cross section and the $\rm ^3 He$ binding energy are not successful in reproducing the data. Large sensitivity to the $NN$ potentials and rather small $\Delta$-isobar effects in the calculated cross section are noticed as different features from those in the deuteron-proton elastic scattering. The results obtained above indicate that $p$-$\rm ^3He$ scattering at intermediate energies is an excellent tool to explore nuclear interactions not accessible by three-nucleon scattering., Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: A multi-grid-type microstrip gas chamber (M-MSGC) is being developed for a new spallation neutron source in Japan. In order to determine incident neutron positions, we plan to use an induced charge through floating pads on the M-MSGC. However, the induced charge spreads over several readout strips and a compact centroid calculation method was used to determine the position. At the same time, we need to reduce the number of interconnections through the gas vessel. For these purposes we are developing a new encoding readout method. The principle of the encoding method is based on a charge division method. Analog ASICs were developed that could encode up to 200 positions. Another encoding method is proposed using analog–digital–analog conversion, which showed a capability to encode more than 940 channels.

Abstract: The lateral profile of boron in an actual microdevice was obtained by 3D analysis—using the newly developed resonance photoionization sputtered neutral mass spectrometry (SNMS) instrument—with a detection limit of 10 18 atoms/cm 3 . The primary ion beam optical system of the instrument uses a Ga liquid metal ion source. The Ga beam diameter was about 30 nm and the ion beam current was about 60 pA. The analysis time to get the profile was about 40 min. Boron was excited by using one ultraviolet photon (249.7 nm) and by one visible photon (563 nm), and then it was ionized by an infrared photon (1064 nm): the so-called three-color resonance ionization. Lateral diffusion profile of boron in the device after chemical vapor deposition (CVD) including heating the wafer was also obtained. These results mean that this SNMS instrument will enable us to easily determine semiconductor processing conditions.

Abstract: We have sought evidence for radiative decays of neutralinos produced in proton-antiproton collisions at {radical}{ital s}=1.8TeV. Events containing two photons plus large missing transverse energy were investigated. The observed event rate and the missing transverse energy distribution of the two-photon events are consistent with QCD predictions. Inferred limits on squark and gluino masses depend on the supersymmetry model parameters. The particular choices {mu}={minus}40GeV/{ital c}{sup 2} and tan{beta}=1.5 lead to 90%-confidence-level asymptotic lower limits of 110 GeV/{ital c}{sup 2} and 140 GeV/{ital c}{sup 2} for squarks and gluinos, respectively.

Abstract: The status of the polarised neutron spectrometer constructed at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex through a collaboration between Tohoku University and KEK will be reported. In particular, the optimisation of magnetic fields to minimise neutron- beam depolarisation using the finite element method will be discussed on the basis of several simulations using the finite element method.

Abstract: A 3He neutron spin filter (NSF) has been designed for a new polarized neutron chopper spectrometer called the Polarization Analysis Neutron Spectrometer with Correlation Method (POLANO) at the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility of the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex. It is designed to fit in a limited space on the spectrometer as an initial neutron beam polarizer and is polarized in situ by spin exchange optical pumping. This will be the first generation 3He NSF on POLANO, and a polarized neutron beam up to 100 meV with a diameter of 50 mm will be available for research on magnetism, hydrogen materials, and strongly correlated electron systems.

Abstract: In $p\overline{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.8$ TeV we find jet events with a rapidity gap topology. The number of hadrons in the rapidity interval $\ensuremath{\Delta}{\ensuremath{\eta}}_{D}$ between leading-jet cones was sampled by charged tracks with ${P}_{T}g400$ MeV/c. We find excess trackless events beyond that expected in a smooth multiplicity distribution. In a control region outside $\ensuremath{\Delta}{\ensuremath{\eta}}_{D}$ we see no excess. For $\ensuremath{\Delta}{\ensuremath{\eta}}_{D}g0.8$, the fraction of excess trackless events, consistent with estimates based on exchange of color-singlet digluons, is $R(\mathrm{gap})=\frac{{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{\mathrm{jet}}(\mathrm{gap})}{{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{\mathrm{jet}}}=0.0085\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{0.0012(\mathrm{stat})}_{\ensuremath{-}0.0012}^{+0.0024}(\mathrm{syst})$.

Abstract: Color coherence effects in pp\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{} collisions are observed and studied with CDF, the Collider Detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. We demonstrate these effects by measuring spatial correlations between soft and leading jets in multijet events. Variables sensitive to interference are identified by comparing the data to the predictions of various shower Monte Carlo programs that are substantially different with respect to the implementation of coherence.

Abstract: This paper reports the measurement of the [ital B] meson and [ital b] quark cross sections through the decay chain [ital B][sup 0][r arrow][ital J]/[psi] K[sup *](892)[sup 0], [ital J]/[psi][r arrow][mu][sup +][mu][sup [minus]], [ital K][sup *](892)[sup 0][r arrow][ital K][sup +][pi][sup [minus]], using 4.3 pb[sup [minus]1] of data collected at the Collider Detector at Fermilab in [ital [bar p]p] collisions at [ital qrts]=1.8 TeV. We obtain [sigma][sub [ital B]]=1.5[plus minus]0.7(stat)[plus minus]0.6(syst) [mu]b for [ital B][sup 0] mesons with transverse momentum [ital P][sub [ital T]][gt]9.0 GeV/[ital c] and rapidity [vert bar][ital y][vert bar][lt]1.0. Using this result, we find [sigma][sub [ital b]]=3.7[plus minus]1.6(stat)[plus minus]1.5(syst) [mu]b for [ital b] quarks with [ital P][sub [ital T]][gt]11.5 GeV/[ital c] and rapidity [vert bar][ital y][vert bar][lt]1.0. The [ital b] quark cross section is compared to next-to-leading order QCD calculations and previous measurements.

Abstract: We measure the Drell-Yan differential cross section [ital d][sup 2][sigma]/[ital dM] d[ital y][vert bar][sub [vert bar][ital y][vert bar][lt]1] over the mass range 11[lt][ital M][lt]150 GeV/[ital c][sup 2] using dielectron and dimuon data from [ital [bar p]p] collisions at a center-of-mass energy of [radical][ital s] =1.8 TeV. Our results show the 1/[ital M][sup 3] dependence that is expected from the naive Drell-Yan model. In comparison to the predictions of recent QCD calculations we find our data favor those parton distribution functions with the largest quark contributions in the [ital x] interval 0.006 to 0.03.

Abstract: To examine the relationship between maternal smoking during pregnancy and the body composition of offspring.Grade 4 elementary school children (n=1366; boys/girls, 724/642; 9-10 years old) were enrolled in this study. All parents answered a lifestyle questionnaire, and children underwent passive smoking tests. Urinary cotinine measurement and lifestyle screening test parameters (that is, body weight, body length, body mass index (BMI), obesity index (OI), blood tests for liver function and lipid profile and questions regarding maternal smoking and lifestyle) were evaluated in terms of their relationship with maternal smoking. In addition, urinary 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) concentration was measured in 80 randomly selected children to assess its relationship with oxidative stress.Both BMI and OI were significantly higher in children whose mothers smoked during pregnancy than in those whose mothers never smoked (BMI: 17.2±2.7 vs 16.9±2.5 kg m(-2), P=0.016; OI: 2.7±14.3% vs 0.4±14.0%, P=0.003). The degree of elevation was positively correlated with the duration of maternal smoking. The increases in BMI and OI resulted from increased body weight and reduced height. The confounding factors-'breakfast with family', 'watching television at dinner', 'eating and drinking before sleep', 'watching television for2 h', 'sleep duration8 h' and 'playing sports'-were statistically significant. BMI and OI were significantly high in children whose mothers smoked during pregnancy in these six confounders. On the other hand, urinary 8-OHdG concentration was negatively correlated with BMI in children who had1.3 ng ml(-1) urinary cotinine, suggesting that it may be related to basal metabolism due to oxidative stress.Maternal smoking is a risk factor for higher BMI and OI in 9- to 10-year-old children whose mothers smoke during pregnancy and may be independent of other confounding factors.

Abstract: We present results of a search for a first-generation leptoquark [ital scrS][sub 1] in [ital [bar p]p] collisions at [radical][ital s] =1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron. Using 4.05 pb[sup [minus]1] of data collected during the 1988--1989 CDF run, we have searched for evidence of [ital scrS][sub 1][ital scr[bar S]1] production assuming that each leptoquark decays to an electron+quark pair with a branching ratio [beta]. Three events with two high energy electrons and two high energy jets were found, but are consistent with [ital Z][sup 0] decay. No events were found in the signal region. Assuming a short lived scalar leptoquark with Yukawa coupling strength [lambda][approx gt]2[times]10[sup [minus]7], we exclude [sigma][beta][sup 2][gt]55(4.0) pb at 95% C.L. for [ital M][sub [ital s][ital c][ital r][ital S]]=45(125) GeV/[ital c][sup 2]. Using a Monte Carlo prediction for [sigma]([ital [bar p]p][r arrow][ital scrS][sub 1][ital scr[bar S]1]+[ital X]), we exclude [ital M][sub [ital s][ital c][ital r][ital S]][lt]113(80) GeV/[ital c][sup 2] for [beta]=100(50)%.

Abstract: We report the full reconstruction of ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{\mathit{c}}$ mesons through the decay chain ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{\mathit{c}}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J/\ensuremath{\psi} \ensuremath{\gamma}, J/\ensuremath{\psi}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$, using data obtained at the Collider Detector at Fermilab in 2.6\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.2 ${\mathrm{pb}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ of p\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}p collisions at \ensuremath{\surd}s =1.8 TeV. This exclusive ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{\mathit{c}}$ sample is used to measure the ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{\mathit{c}}$-meson production cross section times branching fractions. We obtain \ensuremath{\sigma}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}B=3.2\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.4(stat${)}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1.1}^{+1.2}$(syst) nb for ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{\mathit{c}}$ mesons decaying to J/\ensuremath{\psi} with ${\mathit{p}}_{\mathit{T}}$g6.0 GeV/c and pseudorapidity \ensuremath{\Vert}\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\Vert}0.5. From this and the inclusive J/\ensuremath{\psi} cross section we calculate the inclusive b-quark cross section to be 12.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}4.5 \ensuremath{\mu}b for ${\mathit{p}}_{\mathit{T}}^{\mathit{b}}$g8.5 GeV/c and \ensuremath{\Vert}${\mathit{y}}^{\mathit{b}}$\ensuremath{\Vert}1.

Abstract: The first prompt photon measurement from the CDF experiment at the Fermilab [ital p[bar p]] Collider is presented. Two independent methods are used to measure the cross section: one for high transverse momentum ([ital P][sub [ital T]]) and one for lower [ital P][sub [ital T]]. Comparisons to various theoretical calculations are shown. The cross section agrees qualitatively with QCD calculations but has a steeper slope at low [ital P][sub [ital T]].

Abstract: The dijet invariant mass distribution has been measured in the region between 120 and 1000 GeV/[ital c][sup 2], in 1.8-TeV [ital p[bar p]] collisions. The data sample was collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). Data are compared to leading order (LO) and next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD calculations using two different clustering cone radii [ital R] in the jet definition. A quantitative test shows good agreement of data with the LO and NLO QCD predictions for a cone of [ital R]=1. The test using a cone of [ital R]=0.7 shows less agreement. The NLO calculation shows an improvement compared to LO in reproducing the shape of the spectrum for both radii, and approximately predicts the cone size dependence of the cross section.

Abstract: Kinematic properties of four-jet events produced in $p\overline{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.8$ TeV have been studied using data with an integrated luminosity of 325 ${\mathrm{nb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ collected using the Collider Detector at Fermilab during the 1988-1989 Fermilab Collider run. The individual jet ${p}_{T}$ spectra and the angles between each jet pair are compared to the predictions of leading-order quantum chromodynamics for the double gluon bremsstrahlung process and good agreement is observed. In addition, a search for double parton scattering has been undertaken using variables sensitive to the topology of four-jet events. A small double parton content provides the best description of the data. We find $\frac{{N}_{\mathrm{DP}}}{{N}_{\mathrm{DB}}}={5.4}_{\ensuremath{-}2.0}^{+1.6}%$, where $N$ represents the number of events attributed to each process. We measure ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{\mathrm{DP}}={63}_{\ensuremath{-}28}^{+32}$ nb for jets having ${p}_{T}g25$ GeV/c in the pseudorapidity interval $|\ensuremath{\eta}|l3.5$.

Abstract: We have searched for the $b$-flavored baryon decay ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{b}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\frac{J}{\ensuremath{\psi}}{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{0}$ in $p\overline{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.8$ TeV with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). In the $\frac{J}{\ensuremath{\psi}}{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{0}$ invariant-mass distribution we observe a flat distribution and a small number of events, consistent with no signal. Using the $b$-quark cross section measured by the CDF we put an upper limit on the $b\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{b}$ production fraction times the branching ratio $F({\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{b})B({\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{b}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\frac{J}{\ensuremath{\psi}}{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{0})$ of 0.50\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$ at 90% confidence level.

Abstract: Inclusive [ital J]/[psi] and [psi](2[ital S]) production has been studied in [ital [bar p]p] collisions at [radical][ital s] =1.8 TeV using 2.6[plus minus]0.2 pb[sup [minus]1] of data taken with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The products of production cross section times branching fraction were measured as functions of [ital P][sub [ital T]] for [ital J]/[psi][r arrow][mu][sup +][mu][sup [minus]] and [psi](2[ital S])[r arrow][mu][sup +][mu][sup [minus]]. In the kinematic range [ital P][sub [ital T]][gt]6 GeV/[ital c] and [vert bar][eta][vert bar][le]0.5 we get [sigma]([ital [bar p]p][r arrow][ital J]/[psi] [ital X])[ital B]([ital J]/[psi][r arrow][mu][sup +][mu][sup [minus]]) =6.88[plus minus]0.23(stat)[sub [minus]1.08][sup +0.93](syst) nb, and [sigma]([ital [bar p]p][r arrow][psi](2[ital S])[ital X])[ital B]([psi](2[ital S])[r arrow][mu][sup +][mu][sup [minus]]) =0.232[plus minus]0.051(stat)[sub [minus]0.032][sup +0.029](syst)nb. From these values we calculate the inclusive [ital b]-quark production cross section.

Abstract: We search for the rare decay ${\mathit{W}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$ in 4.2 ${\mathrm{pb}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ of pp\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{} collisions recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. At the 95% confidence level, we find an upper limit on the partial decay width to be \ensuremath{\Gamma}(${\mathit{W}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$)/\ensuremath{\Gamma}(${\mathit{W}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{e}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$\ensuremath{\nu})\ensuremath{\le}7.5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}3}$.

Abstract: Substrate-free a-SiO2 films, 480 A in thickness, have been made by means of electron beam evaporation. Electron diffraction patterns, taken under the condition that the incident beam is normal to the films, are all centre-symmetric, while their intensity features vary considerably with the film thickness. Since a film as thin as 4 A has fewer atomic pairs in a direction normal to the film than in the parallel direction, the Patterson function is not spherically symmetric as for a bulk sample but instead is cylindrically symmetric. A Fourier sine-transform of the intensity therefore no longer gives a proper radial distribution but one that depends on the film thickness. A procedure for correcting the modified function is derived. The obtained interatomic distances for the Si–O bond and O – O are respectively 1.54 and 2.48 A, for the film 4 A in thickness and are smaller than those of bulk a-SiO2. Abstract: We present results of searches for the top quark in {ital p{bar p}} collisions at {radical}{ital s} =1.8 TeV. The data sample was collected during 1988--1989 at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider and has an integrated luminosity of 4.1 pb{sup {minus}1}. We have extended our previous search for {ital e}{mu} final states to include the {ital ee} and {mu}{mu} channels. In addition, we have searched for a low-transverse-momentum muon as a tag of the bottom quark in top decay events with a lepton and at least two jets. We obtain a lower limit on the top-quark mass of 91 GeV/{ital c}{sup 2} at the 95% confidence level assuming standard-model charged-current decays.

Abstract: The production and event topology of three-jet events produced in {ital p{bar p}} collisions at {radical}{ital s} =1.8 TeV have been studied with the Collider Detector at Fermilab at the Tevatron Collider. The distributions of the three-jet angular variables ({psi}{sup *} and cos{theta}{sup *}) and of the variables describing the energy sharing between jets ({ital x}{sub 3} and {ital x}{sub 4}) are found to agree well with tree-level QCD calculations. These distributions are predicted to have different shapes for different initial-state subprocesses (quark-antiquark, quark-gluon, and gluon-gluon). The data are consistent with the small expected contribution from quark-antiquark initial states, in agreement with theoretical expectations.

Abstract: The ${\mathit{B}}^{0}$ B\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{} $^{0}$ average mixing parameter \ensuremath{\chi} has been extracted from e\ensuremath{\mu} and ee events produced in pp\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{} collisions at \ensuremath{\surd}s =1.8 TeV. In a sample of 900 e\ensuremath{\mu} events, the like-sign to opposite-sign charge ratio R is measured to be 0.556\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.048(stat${)}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}0.042}^{+0.035}$(syst). In the absence of mixing, the expected value of R would be 0.23\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.06. The corresponding number for 212 ee events is 0.573\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.116(stat)\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.047(syst) with an expected nonmixing value of 0.24\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.07. The observed excess in R leads to a combined determination of \ensuremath{\chi}=0.176\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.031(stat+syst) \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.032 (model), where the last uncertainty is due to Monte Carlo modeling.

Abstract: The {ital W}{prime} is a charged, heavy, vector boson predicted to exist by some extensions of the standard model. We have searched for the processes {ital W}{prime}{r arrow}{ital e}{nu} and {ital W}{prime}{r arrow}{mu}{nu} for {ital M}{sub {ital W}{prime}}{gt}100 GeV/{ital c}{sup 2}, in {ital {bar p}p} collisions at {radical}{ital s} =1.8 TeV, using data taken with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The nonobservation of these processes leads to a lower limit of 520 Gev/{ital c}{sup 2} (95% confidence level) on the mass of the {ital W}{prime}, assuming standard-strength couplings to three fermion generations.

Abstract: An analysis of the forward-backward asymmetry in {ital Z}{sup 0} decays using data from the Collider Detector at Fermilab at {radical}{ital s} =1.8 TeV yields {ital A}{sub {ital F}{ital B}}=(5.2{plus minus}5.9(stat){plus minus}0.4(syst))% and sin{sup 2}{bar {theta}}{sub {ital W}} =0.228{sub {minus}0.015}{sup +0.017}(stat){plus minus}0.002(syst).

Abstract: An analysis of high-transverse-momentum electrons using data from the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) of {ital {bar p}p} collisions at {radical}{ital s} =1800 GeV yields values of the production cross section times branching ratio for {ital W} and {ital Z}{sup 0} bosons of {sigma}({ital {bar p}p}{r arrow}{ital WX}{r arrow}{ital e}{nu}{ital X})=2.19{plus minus}0.04(stat){plus minus}0.21(syst) nb and {sigma}({ital {bar p}p}{r arrow}{ital Z}{sup 0}{ital X}{r arrow}{ital e}{sup +}{ital e{minus}}{ital X})=0.209{plus minus}0.013(stat) {plus minus}0.017(syst) nb. Detailed descriptions of the CDF electron identification, background, efficiency, and acceptance are included. Theoretical predictions of the cross sections that include a mass for the top quark larger than the {ital W} mass, current values of the {ital W} and {ital Z}{sup 0} masses, and higher-order QCD corrections are in good agreement with these measured values.
