Solid state compounds exhibiting multiple and coupled macroscopic orders, named multiferroics, represent a challenge for both theoretical and experimental modern condensed-matter physics. Spins and the electric polarisation in conventional magnetic and ferroelectric materials can be manipulated on their fundamental timescales, by means of femtosecond laser pulses. In view of the resounding success and popularity of the all-optical approach, it is only natural to wonder about the application of this scheme to study the intrinsic coupling between spins and charges in multiferroics. Deeply fundamental questions arise: can ultrashort laser pulses deterministically activate, enhance or suppress the magnetoelectric coupling on the femtosecond timescale? Can these processes be triggered in a fully coherent fashion, thus being unrestrained by any thermal load? Which mechanism of spin-charge coupling is most favourable to overcome these overarching and daunting challenges? This problem is interdisciplinary in nature, requiring contributions from materials science and condensed matter physics from both theoretical and experimental perspectives. High-quality materials suitable for optical investigations have to be identified, synthetized and characterised. General and valid models offer then a guide to the plethora of possible light-induced processes, resulting in the desired ultrafast multiferroic manipulations. Finally, healthy experimental schemes, able to unambiguously track the ultrafast dynamics of either the ferroelectric or the magnetic order parameter have to be developed and implemented. Our motivation to write this review is to lay a broad and multidisciplinary foundation, which may be employed as a starting point for non-equilibrium approaches to the manipulation of the multiferroicity on the femtosecond timescale. This was also one of the main goals of the COST Action MAGNETOFON, whose network constitutes the core of the authors of this review. The present work thus represents a part of the scientific legacy of MAGNETOFON itself.

Optical absorption spectra in the visible and near-infrared light were measured for magnetoelectric spin glass Ni_{0.4}Mn_{0.6}TiO_{3} under various field-cooled conditions. Despite the absence of long-range magnetic-dipole order, this spin-glass system exhibits nonreciprocal directional dichroism (NDD) at zero external field after a magnetoelectric field-cooled procedure. This result is distinct from previous studies on NDD in systems with magnetic toroidal moments induced either by long-range magnetic-dipole order or by applying crossed electric and magnetic fields. The present Letter conclusively demonstrates that the observed NDD originates from magnetoelectrically induced ferroic order of magnetic toroidal moments without conventional magnetic-dipole order.

The polar magnet CaBaCo$_{4}$O$_{7}$ is known to exhibit the largest magnetic-field-driven electric polarization change ($\Delta P$) associated with an antiferromagnetic (AFM)-ferrimagnetic (FIM) transition in a narrow temperature range between 62 and 69 K. In this work, we investigate the effect of Ni doping on its multiferroic properties, by means of magnetization, electric polarization, dielectric constant, and magnetostriction measurements on single crystals of CaBaCo$_{3.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$O$_{7}$ up to 50 T. In the doped material, two kinds of AFM phases appear below 78 K, accompanying negative $\Delta P$. Upon the application of a magnetic field along any crystallographic axis, giant positive $\Delta P$ of up to $11 \sim 12$ mC/m$^{2}$ is observed along with an AFM-FIM transition in the whole temperature range below 78 K. The giant magnetoelectric effect inherent in CaBaCo$_{4}$O$_{7}$ can be further enhanced just by a small amount of chemical substitution, in terms of (i) increasing the magnitude of $\Delta P$ and (ii) expanding the temperature range in which giant $\Delta P$ appears., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, SM: 3 pages, 3 figures

We demonstrate inline holography with a soft-x-ray vortex beam having an orbital angular momentum. A hologram is recorded as an interference pattern between a Bragg-diffracted wave from a fork grating and a divergent wave generated by a Fresnel zone plate. The images obtained exhibit fork-shaped interference fringes, which confirm the formation of a vortex beam. By analyzing the interference images, we successfully obtain a spiral phase distribution with a topological charge $\ensuremath{\ell}=\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1$. The results demonstrate that the inline-holography technique may be an effective probe for the characterization of topological defects in magnetic textures.

Nonlinear optical frequency conversion has been challenged to move down to the extreme ultraviolet and x-ray region. However, the extremely low signals have allowed researchers to only perform transmission experiments of the gas phase or ultrathin films. Here, we report second harmonic generation (SHG) of the reflected beam of a soft x-ray free-electron laser from a solid, which is enhanced by the resonant effect. The observation revealed that the double resonance condition can be met by absorption edges for transition metal oxides in the soft x-ray range, and this suggests that the resonant SHG technique can be applicable to a wide range of materials. We discuss the possibility of element-selective SHG spectroscopy measurements in the soft x-ray range.

We have succeeded in growing large high-quality single crystals of double-perovskite NdBaMn2O6 with c-axis aligned. Curie-Weiss paramagnetism and metallic conduction are observed above 290 K (TMI ). The magnetic susceptibility suddenly drops at TMI accompanied by a metal-insulator transition. Pervious studies using polycrystalline samples proposed that this material undergoes a ferromagnetic phase transition near 300K, and that the magnetic anomaly at TMI should be ascribed to layered antiferromagnetic phase transition. However, single-crystalline samples do not show any anomaly that indicates the ferromagnetic phase transition above TMI . We assign the onset of magnetic anisotropy at 235 K as antiferromagnetic transition temperature TN . Though the magnetization just above TMI shows the ferromagnetic-like magnetic-field dependence, the magnetization does not saturate under 70kOe at 300K. The magnetization behavior implies ferromagnetic fluctuation in the paramagnetic phase. The ferromagnetic fluctuation are also observed just below TMI . Because a metamagnetic transition is observed at a higher magnetic field, the ferromagnetic fluctuation competes with antiferromagnetic fluctuation in this temperature range.

An optical-label recognition system using time-to-space conversion, spatial Vander-Lugt 2-D correlation, and postprocessing with a slit and a delay compensator is proposed. The postprocessing, with the narrow slit and a prism for the time-delay compensation, makes it possible to distinguish the labels, consisting of a time series of optical pulses. For 4-b binary phase-shift-keying labels at 160 Gb/s, eight different labels are proved to be distinguished by the computer simulation. The contrast ratio of autocorrelation to cross-correlation is 1.61 and 2.5 without and with time gating, respectively.

Importance and applicability of numerical flow analysis to environmental science are outlined. Fluid phenomena in the ocean, rivers, atmosphere and the ground are investigated by means of numerical methods and in turn proposals for the control, restoration and counterplans against the so-called environmental disrupters which disorder natural environment as well as ecological systems in nature. All such environmental disrupters diffuse in and are transported by environmental fluids. Those disrupters sometimes react on some other chemicals to generate offensive odor and even more poisonous materials. Environmental fluid dynamics is effective for the evaluation, prediction and restoration of the environmental damage. In this paper we focus our attention on the dynamical analysis of the diffusion and advection processes of environmental disrupters in environmental fluids. The first objective is to make an attempt to formulate a mathematical model for environmental fluids. The second objective is to exhibit some results of numerical simulations of the motion of offensive odor or pollutants in the atmosphere over a complex geographical topography.

We experimentally demonstrate one-way transparency of light in multiferroic CuB(2)O(4). The material is rendered transparent for light propagating in one direction, while opaque for light propagating in the opposite direction. The novel transparency results from a destructive interference of the electric dipole and magnetic dipole transitions. The realization of the effect has been accomplished by the application of a high magnetic field and the proper selection of the propagation direction of light in agreement with our quantum mechanical formulation of nonreciprocal directional dichroism.

クローン病に合併する続発性アミロイドーシスは稀な疾患であるとされているが,患者数の増加にともない今後遭遇する可能性も増えてくると思われる.続発性アミロイドーシスを合併したクローン病患者の背景や術中,術後の合併症について検討した.当院にて経験したクローン病の開腹腸管切除症例94症例について,アミロイド沈着の有無の検索を行ったところ,5症例にアミロイドの沈着を認めた.沈着ある,なしの2群に分け,病態周術期合併症などについて比較検討したところ,2回目3回目手術時の術中出血量,合併症の膵炎,肝不全,消化管出血,また蛋白尿3回目手術時の手術時間は,アミロイドの沈着のない群に比ベアミロイド沈着群で有意差(P

Magnetic Compton profiles (MCP) have been measured in the [100], [110] and [001] directions on the single crystals of La 2−2 x Sr 1+2 x Mn 2 O 7 ( x =0.30, 0.35 and 0.42) at 10 K. The occupation numbers in t 2g and two e g type orbitals ( x 2 − y 2 and 3 z 2 − r 2 ) of Mn-3 d state are evaluated from the line-shape analysis of MCP's in the [001] direction by using theoretical profiles derived from the ab initio calculations for (MnO 6 ) 8− cluster. It has been found that the e g state is dominated by the x 2 − y 2 type orbital at every hole concentration, x , and the 3 z 2 − r 2 type orbital population decreases with increasing x . From the result, the connections of e g orbital state with the electron correlation effect, exchange interactions, lattice distortion and electronic inhomogeneity are discussed.

Res., 21: 97–108. A foreign gene (Green Fluorescent Protein; GFP) was injected into the germinal crescent region (GCR) of chicken embryos (stage 9–11) to produce germ-line transgenic chickens. After 3 days of injection, 21 manipulated embryos (19.4%) had the expression of GFP gene in embryonic tissues. The presence of injected gene was recognized in the gonads (95.5%), blood (35.0%) and sperm cells (14.3%) when examined by PCR analysis. In addition, in the progeny test, the fertility (42.9%) of the cross breed between DNA treated chickens was lower than that (88.0%) of the cross breed between the treated chickens and the normal ones. Arima, T., Ebara, F. and Fujihara, N. 2001. Intra-testicular injection of foreign DNA as a possible method for the production of transgenic chickens. J. Appl. Anim. Res., 20: 65–72. An exogenous gene (green fluorescent protein: GFP), as a marker gene, was injected directly into the testis of matured male chicken without the laparotomy. After one day of fasting, a solution containing DNA was injected directly into the testis through abdominal skin between 6th and 7th ribs. After 3 days of injection, semen samples were collected by the method of lumbar massage and washed 5 times by repeated centrifugation with PBS. Introduced DNA was detected in ejaculated spermetazoa by PCR analysis and the DNA was also found in the embryo of next generation (Fo) when the treated spermatozoa was inseminated into laying hens. These results suggest that spermatozoa may act as a vector for transferring exogenous genes into the chicken.

The chemical diffusion coefficients of oxygen were measured for the (Th 1-y , U y )O 2+x with uranium content y of 1, 3 and 5 mol% in the temperature range of 1213-1313 K under the oxidizing or reducing atmosphere. The magnitude of activation energies obtained for oxygen diffusion was in good agreement with the migration energy which is calculated based on interstitialcy mechanism by Colbourn. With increasing uranium content, the chemical diffusion coefficient increased and the activation energy for oxygen diffusion decreased slightly in the present experimental conditions. The excess oxygen were soluble into the (Th 1-y , U y )O 2+x sample, so that the interaction energy between the higher valence uranium ions and interstitial oxygen ions might increase with decreasing uranium content. The effect of oxygen partial pressure on both the chemical diffusion coefficient and the lattice parameter of (Th 1-y , U y )O 2+x could not be found. The lattice constant decreased linearly with uranium content, which indicated that the relation between these parameters obeyed Vegard's law.

Intrathymic (IT) antigen injection has been shown to induce antigen-specific systemic tolerance in the rodent. To delineate the mechanisms responsible for the induction of tolerance, we used the 2C line of T cell receptor transgenic mice. The majority of T cells in 2C mice express an antigen receptor specific for the major histocompatibility complex class I alloantigen Ld and can be identified with the clonotypic monoclonal antibody 1B2. IT injection of lymphoid cells expressing Ld was found to induce a significant prolongation in BALB/c skin allograft survival. The allograft prolongation was associated with a marked reduction in the number of developing 1B2+ thymocytes (clonal deletion), which occurred primarily at the CD4+ CD8+ stage of thymocyte development, as well as a reduction in the number of mature CD8+ 1B2+ 2C T cells in peripheral lymphoid tissue. In addition, CD8+ 1B2+ 2C T cells that survive deletion have decreased CD8 expression levels and a significantly reduced in vitro proliferative response to specific alloantigen (clonal anergy). Exogenous recombinant interleukin 2 restores the capacity of 2C T cells to respond in vitro to alloantigen. Experiments involving separation of cells by fluorescence-activated cell sorter indicate that there is a precise correlation between the reduction in CD8 expression and anergy induction. Collectively, these data indicate that IT antigen injection can induce antigen-specific systemic tolerance by both clonal deletion and clonal anergy.

Background . The monoclonal antirat CD4 antibody RIB 5/2 has been shown to modulate the CD4 glycoprotein without eliminating the affected T cells. We have shown that the administration of multiple doses of RIB 5/2 during the peritransplantation period prevents the rejection of rat kidney allografts. Methods . We compared the efficacy of a single intraperitoneal dose of 20 mg/kg RIB 5/2 plus donor antigen (25 × 10 6 spleen cells [SCs]) given by either an intrathymic or an intravenous route with the depleting anti-CD4 monoclonal antibody (mAb) OX-38 plus antigen 21 days before a major histocompatibility complex (MHC)-mismatched Lewis (RT1 1 ) to Buffalo (RT1 b ) rat cardiac or renal allograft. By delaying the transplantation for 21 days, recovery from the nonspecific effects of the antibody treatment allowed the demonstration of donor antigen-specific tolerance. Results . OX-38 mAb given with intrathymic SCs induced tolerance to heart but not kidney grafts, whereas OX-38 given with intravenous SCs failed to prolong survival of either heart or renal allografts. In contrast, RIB 5/2 mAb administration, when combined with alloantigen given by either intravenous or intrathymic routes, induced tolerance to heart allografts, whereas only alloantigen given by the intravenous route with RIB 5/2 resulted in tolerance to renal grafts. Conclusions . Concomitant administration of intravenous donor alloantigen and the modulation of CD4 + recipient cells by nondepleting RIB 5/2, rather than elimination of these CD4 + cells with depleting mAb OX-38, is a more potent method for the induction of allograft tolerance.

The polarization of tau leptons in the reaction e+ e- --> tau+ tau- has been measured using a e+e- collider, TRISTAN, at the center-of-mass energy of 58 GeV. From the kinematical distributions of daughter particles in tau --> e nu nu-bar, mu nu nu-bar, rho nu or pi(K) nu decays, the average polarization of tau- and its forward-backward asymmetry have been evaluated to be 0.012 +- 0.058 and 0.029 +- 0.057, respectively.

Effect of the long-term treatment with a Dan-Shen (Salviae miltiorrhizae radix) methanol extract (DME) or its major ingredient lithospermate B (LSB) on memory and learning in scenescence-accelerated mouse (SAM) was investigated by means of Morris's water maze task. DME or LSB treatment significantly decreased the escape latency in the P8 strain of SAM (SAMP8), which strain spontaneously develops learning deficits. These results suggest that DME and LSB treatment improved spacial learning. Neurochemical investigations indicated that both drugs did not affect the cholinergic system, but enhanced functions of the glutamate-PKC system in hippocampus, since the increases in [3H]MK-801 ((+)-5-methyl-10, 11-dihydro-5H-dibenzo[a, b]-cyclohepten-5, 10-imine maleate) binding in cortex and [3H]PDBu (phorbol 12, 13-dibutyrate) binding in hippocampus were observed in DME and LSB treatments. Our previous studies indicate the decrease in PDBu binding and NMDA receptor-mediated functions in SAMP8 brain. Thus, it is suggested that 1) Methanol extract of Dan-Shen is effective for prevention of spacial learning deficit caused with aging, 2) lithospermate B is one of the active ingredients, 3) SAMP8 is useful model animal to investigate drugs for anti-aging or anti-dementia.

The nondepleting monoclonal antirat CD4 antibody, RIB 5/2, has been shown to modulate, but not eliminate, the CD4 + T cells and to prolong survival of rat skin, renal, or cardiac allografts when serially administered after transplantation. In the present study, we compared the efficacy of recipient pretreatment with a single dose of nondepleting RIB 5/2 or depleting OX-38 anti-CD4 monoclonal antibody plus donor alloantigen given intravenously or intrathymically 21 days before transplantation on the survival of completely MHC-mismatched rat cardiac allografts. Intraperitoneal injection of a single dose (20 mg/kg) of RIB 5/2 resulted in a decrease in CD4 surface molecule expression on peripheral CD4 + T cells without cell elimination as shown by FACS analysis. The nonspecific effect of a single dose of RIB 5/2 mAb had resolved by 21 days after treatment as evidenced by the almost complete recovery of normal surface CD4 molecule expression. Cardiac allografts transplanted immediately or 21 days after a single dose of RIB 5/2 alone were uniformly acutely rejected. On the other hand, recipients treated with depleting anti-CD4 OX-38 (20 mg/kg) acutely rejected cardiac allografts transplanted 21 days later, but indefinitely accepted all grafts transplanted on the same day. In contrast, combined treatment with i.v. donor splenocytes (25x10 6 ) plus nondepleting RIB 5/2, but not with depleting anti-CD4 mAb, OX-38, resulted in survival for more than 100 days in 75% of recipients of donor specific, but not third party, cardiac allografts transplanted 21 days later. Irradiation (3000 rads) of the i.v. donor splenocytes combined with RIB 5/2 abrogated their tolerizing effect. When donor antigen was given intrathymically, both RIB 5/2 and OX-38 resulted in indefinite tolerance to cardiac allografts transplanted 21 days later. The failure of exogenous administration of high dose (180,000 IU/injection) rIL-2 for 10 days to reverse the unresponsiveness of i.v. SC plus RIB 5/2 pretreatment suggests that this tolerant state is not due to a deficiency of IL-2. In vitro studies showed marked inhibition of MLC responsiveness and cytolytic T cell activity in tolerant recipients that cannot be reversed by the addition of IL-2. Thus, pretransplant intravenous donor alloantigen combined with a dose of nondepleting anti-CD4 mAb, RIB 5/2, which alone has no significant effect, induced donor specific cardiac allograft tolerance.

The ratio of orbital (L) and spin (S) contributions to the magnetically ordered moments of a 5d transition metal oxide, Sr2IrO4 was evaluated by nonresonant magnetic x-ray diffraction. We applied an improved experimental setting that minimized the experimental error, in which we varied only the linear polarization of incident x ray at a fixed scattering angle. Strong polarization dependence of the intensity of magnetic diffraction was observed, from which we conclude that the ordered moments contain substantial contribution from the orbital degree of freedom with the ratio ofL/S∼5.0, evidencing the pronounced effect of spin-orbit coupling. The obtained ratio is close to, but slightly larger than the expected value for the ideal J(eff) = 1/2 moment of a spin-orbital Mott insulator, |J(1/2)|L(z)|J(1/2)|/|J(1/2)|S(z)|J(1/2)| = 4, which cannot be accounted for by the redistribution of orbital components within the t(2g) bands associated with the elongation of the IrO6 octahedra.

Coherent spin fluctuation was detected in the photoinduced Mott insulator- metal transition in perovskite cobalt oxide by using 3 optical-cycle infrared pulse. Such coherent spin fluctuation is driven by the perovskite distortion changing orbital gap.

The hCTLA4Ig/mCTLA4Ig fusion protein of the extracellular domain of human/mouse CTLA4 and the Fc portion of the human/mouse immunoglobulin G1 block the CD28/B7 costimulatory T-cell activation pathway. We evaluated the effect of prolonged B7-CD28 blockade, T-cell depletion, or both on rat to mouse cardiac xenografts.C57BL/6 (H-2b) mice receiving infant Wistar Furth (RT1u) rat cardiac xenografts were treated with anti-CD4 (GK1.5) and anti-CD8 (2.43) monoclonal antibodies (mAb; 0.2 mg intravenous each) on days -2 and 0, hCTLA4Ig or mCTLA4Ig every other day from day 0 until day 14 and then twice a week until day 50 or day 100, or both. Changes in cellular reactivity were assayed by mixed lymphocyte culture and cell-mediated cytotoxicity and the development of cytotoxic antibodies was serially measured after transplantation.Either human CTLA4Ig or murine CTLA4Ig alone led to significant prolongation of rat to mouse cardiac xenografts (median survival time [MST], 22 or 26 days, respectively [p = 0.008], versus control). hCTLA4Ig given for 50 days in combination with two doses of anti-CD4/CD8 monoclonal antibodies further prolonged graft survival (MST, 61 days; p versus control0.0001). In this combination, when hCTLA4Ig was continued until day 100, the graft survival was further prolonged (MST, 119 days). mCTLA4Ig for 100 days plus anti-CD4/CD8 similarly prolonged rat xenograft survival (MST, 94 days). However, all cardiac xenografts eventually failed, primarily from humoral rejection. Cytotoxic antibody titers rose rapidly only in animals rejecting a graft, and suppressed cell-mediated immunity had completely recovered in rejecting recipients.Blockage of the CD28-B7 costimulatory interaction can inhibit both humoral and cell-mediated immune responses and result in the prolonged acceptance of rat to mouse cardiac xenografts. Longer administration of CTLA4Ig and anti-CD4/CD8 monoclonal antibodies further prolongs but does not achieve indefinite survival of rat cardiac xenografts.

Six different cross-linking agents were added to the monomer component of an autopolymerizing denture base resin, and their effects on the water sorption and solubility were investigated. The results of this study suggested that the chemical nature of the polymer versus that of the water molecule directly affected the water sorption of denture base resin. The addition of a cross-linking agent decreased the solubility with increasing concentration.

B7-1 and B7-2 are well characterized costimulatory ligands on Ag presentation cells for the CD28 and CTLA4 receptors on T cells. The fusion protein CTLA4Ig can block this interaction and prevent specific T cell activation. The development of fatal CD4+ T cell-mediated experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) in susceptible female Lewis rats was optimized by immunization with 20 mg of guinea pig spinal cord homogenate in CFA on day 0 with three doses of 1 microgram pertussis toxin given i.v. on days 0, 3, and 7. This immunization regimen uniformly resulted in the development of severe clinical neurologic signs of EAE with 100% mortality by day 17 postimmunization. Treatment with 0.5 mg/dose of rhCTLA4-Ig on days - 2, 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 and 18 significantly decreased the incidence, delayed the onset, and reduced the severity of clinical EAE (p = 0.0002 vs control by the Mann-Whitney U test) enough to completely prevent fatal EAE, whereas treatment with control human IgG had no effect. Histologically, perivascular neutrophilic infiltrates were also dramatically decreased in the spinal cords of animals treated with CTLA4 but not in those treated with control human IgG. The proliferative response to encephalitogenic Ags (guinea pig myelin basic protein and proteolipid protein) by lymph node cells from animals immunized with guinea pig spinal cord 10 days before was also significantly suppressed in vitro by CTLA4Ig (1 microg/ml). However, the protective effect of CTLA4Ig could be completely prevented by the daily i.p. administration, from day 0 to 10, of exogenous human rIL-2 (180,000 IU). These results indicate a critical requirement of the costimulatory B7/CD28 pathway early in the development of CD4+ T cell-mediated EAE in the rat.

The authors investigated the composition and structure of six hard auto-polymerizing reline resins. The chemical compositions, glass transition temperatures, molecular weights and particle size distributions of the powders, and the chemical compositions of the liquids were examined. The powder compositions were classified into three groups. The first group contained poly(methyl methacrylate). The second contained poly(ethyl methacrylate) and poly(methyl methacrylate/ethyl methacrylate) and the third contained poly(ethyl methacrylate). The average molecular weights of these powders was about 2 x 10(5). The indexes of molecular weight dispersion suggested that all powders contained polymers that had a narrow molecular weight distribution. The particle size distribution of these powders was classified into two groups. The first group was mainly in the range of 50-100 microns and the second mainly between 20 and 50 microns. The composition of the liquids was classified into three groups. The first group contained a monofunctional methacrylate monomer. The second contained a monofunctional methacrylate monomer and a plasticizer and the third contained monofunctional methacrylate monomers and cross-linking agents. The results of this experiment showed the differences in composition among the products. This will be useful for examining the relationship between the composition and mechanical properties of hard autopolymerizing reline resins.

Background. We have previously reported the induction of donor-specific tolerance to cardiac allografts after intrathymic injection of alloantigen with simultaneous administration of antilymphocyte serum treatment to eliminate peripheral T cells. The present study determines whether prolongation of a fully major histocompatibility complex-mismatched cardiac allograft is achieved after a single administration of anti-CD4 monoclonal antibody (MoAb) combined with intrathymic injection of alloantigen. Methods. Male Buffalo rats were given Lewis splenocytes via the intrathymic or intravenous route in combination with a single administration of anti-CD4 monoclonal antibody (OX-38) or anti-CD8 MoAb (OX-8) or both. Heterotopic cardiac transplantation was performed 21 days after intrathymic alloantigen or MoAb pretreatment or both. Fluorescence-activated cell sorter analysis determined changes in lymphocyte compartment T-cell subsets, and in vitro studies examined recipient cellular reactivity. Results. By 21 days after anti-CD4 MoAb treatment earlier nonspecific immunosuppression had resolved with 80% recovery of peripheral CD4+ T cells and restoration of recipient immunocompetence to allow normal rejection of a cardiac allograft. Combined treatment with intrathymic, but not intravenous, alloantigen plus anti-CD4 MoAb induced donor-specific tolerance to subsequent rat cardiac allografts. However, anti-CD8 MoAb combined with intrathymic alloantigen failed to induce tolerance despite a profound depletion of the CD8+ T-cell subset. Conclusions. Combined treatment of rats with intrathymic donor alloantigen and a single administration of anti-CD4, but not anti-CD8, MoAb significantly prolongs cardiac allograft survival across a fully major histocompatibility complex mismatched strain combination.

We investigated the crystal structures of an ordered perovskite-type cobaltate, GdBaCo2O(5+δ) (δ0.5), at elevated temperatures by transmission electron microscopy. Above the magnetic ordering temperature, we observed a first-order structural phase transition between the low-temperature tetragonal 3a(p) × 3a(p) and high-temperature orthorhombic 1a(p) × 2a(p) superstructure phases (where a(p) is the perovskite-unit cell). Upon the application of a magnetic field, an incommensurate phase emerges around the structural phase-transition temperature, which indicates a magnetic-field-induced structural phase transition via no magnetic ordering in the ordered perovskite-type cobaltate.

To investigate the effect of restriction of mandibular movements during sleep on jaw-muscle electromyographic (EMG) activity. Eleven healthy subjects (four men and seven women; age, 25·9 ± 3·1 years) with self-reports of sleep bruxism participated in three randomised sessions with three different types of oral appliances: (i) full-arch maxillary and mandibular appliances which did not allow any mandibular movement, that is, restrictive oral appliance (restrict-MMOA), (ii) full-arch maxillary and mandibular oral appliances (free-MMOA) with no restrictions of mandibular movements and (iii) conventional full-arch flat stabilisation appliance, that is, maxillary oral appliance (free-MOA). Baseline recordings (1st EMG recording) of jaw-muscle activity during sleep without any oral appliance were performed and followed by 1 week of nightly use of each oral appliance (three sessions). During the last night in each session, jaw-muscle activity was recorded (2nd, 3rd and 4th EMG recordings) and compared to baseline values. All EMG data were analysed in accordance with the gold-standard diagnostic method. The average jaw-muscle activity expressed as number of EMG episodes and bursts per hour sleep was significantly reduced during any combination of appliance compared to baseline values. The inhibitory effect of the appliances was specific to the number of phasic EMG episodes and bursts (P0·01), with no effects on tonic EMG bursts or episodes (P0·30). The results indicated that restriction of mandibular movements with oral appliances do not have any major influence on jaw-muscle activity during sleep but rather that the immediate effect of any combination of oral appliances lead to a suppression of phasic EMG bursts and episodes.

The dynamical correlations of J(eff)=1/2 isospins in the paramagnetic state of spin-orbital Mott insulator Sr2IrO4 were revealed by resonant magnetic x-ray diffuse scattering. We found a two-dimensional antiferromagnetic fluctuation with a large in-plane correlation length exceeding 100 lattice spacings at even 20 K above the magnetic ordering temperature. In marked contrast to the naive expectation of the strong magnetic anisotropy associated with an enhanced spin-orbit coupling, we discovered an isotropic isospin correlation that is well described by the two-dimensional S=1/2 quantum Heisenberg model. The estimated antiferromagnetic coupling constant as large as J∼0.1 eV that is comparable to the small Mott gap (0.5 eV) points out the weak and marginal Mott character of this spin-orbital entangled system.

Cd2Os2O7 shows a peculiar metal-insulator transition at 227 K with magnetic ordering in a frustrated pyrochlore lattice, but its magnetic structure in the ordered state and the transition origin are yet uncovered. We observed a commensurate magnetic peak by resonant x-ray scattering in a high-quality single crystal. X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering experiments confirmed that the transition is not accompanied with any spatial symmetry breaking. We propose a noncollinear all-in-all-out spin arrangement on the tetrahedral network made of Os atoms. Based on this we suggest that the transition is not caused by the Slater mechanism as believed earlier but by an alternative mechanism related to the formation of the specific tetrahedral magnetic order on the pyrochlore lattice in the presence of strong spin-orbit interactions.

We report a ferroelectric transition driven by the off-centering of magnetic Mn(4+) ions in antiferromagnetic Mott insulators Sr(1-x)Ba(x)MnO(3) with a perovskite structure. As x increases, the perovskite lattice shows the typical soft-mode dynamics, as revealed by the momentum-resolved inelastic x-ray scattering and far-infrared spectroscopy, and the ferroelectricity shows up for x ≥ 0.45. The observed polarization is comparable to that for a prototypical ferroelectric BaTiO(3). We further demonstrate that the magnetic order suppresses the ferroelectric lattice dilation by ∼70% and increases the soft-phonon energy by ∼50%, indicating the largest magnetoelectric effects yet attained.

Undoped and 5at% Eu doped ZnO films were prepared by the sol-gel process using the spin-coating method. The films were analyzed by XRD. Photoluminescence spectra of the films were characterized at room temperature and 12K.

We designed and installed two types of long‐working‐distance Kirkpatrick‐Baez (KB) mirrors and mirror manipulators, which were customized into each experiment for hard x‐ray undulator beamlines at SPring‐8. For the BL32XU RIKEN Targeted Proteins beamline, 400‐mm‐long KB focusing mirrors for a beam size of 1 μm with a 730‐mm‐long working distance were designed for carrying out the structural analysis of protein microcrystals. We realized a focusing beam size of 0.9×0.9 μm2 (FWHM) and a focusing intensity of 6×1010 (photons/s) at an x‐ray energy of 12.4 keV. For the BL19LXU RIKEN SR Physics beamline, we developed KB mirrors for 100‐nm focusing with a 100‐mm‐working distance for the purpose of nano‐focus x‐ray diffraction. A focusing beam size of 100×100 nm2 (FWHM) and a high focusing intensity of 3.7×1010 (photons/s) at an x‐ray energy of 12.4 keV were realized.

The response properties and directional receptive fields of nonspiking local interneurons in the cercal system of the cockroach are described. Wind-evoked responses were recorded intracellularly, and then analyzed by means of the Wiener kernel method in which a Gaussian white noise signal was used as a stimulus. Cross-correlation between the response and the white noise signal produced first- (linear) and second-order (nonlinear) kernels that were used to define input-output characteristics of the interneurons. Three sets of interneurons were distinguished on the basis of kernel analysis. First, responses in interneurons 101, 107, 111, and 203 were characterized predominantly by a differentiating first-order kernel, which suggests a linear relationship to the stimulus. The amplitude and waveform of the kernel changed with the change in stimulus angle, indicating that these four cells are directionally sensitive. Second, responses in interneurons 102 and 103 were also directionally sensitive but highly nonlinear. The first-order kernel was biphasic, whereas the second-order kernel had an elongated depolarizing peak on the diagonal. The response dynamics were accounted for by a cascade of two filters, a linear band-pass filter and a static nonlinear filter, in which the nonlinearity is a signal compression (or a rectification). Third, responses in interneurons 104 and 201 consist largely of the second-order nonlinear component. The second-order kernel, which had an elongated depolarizing peak or a hyperpolarizing valley on the diagonal, did not show any directional preference. The second-order nonlinearity was dynamic, and could be modeled by a band-pass linear filter-static nonlinearity-low-pass linear filter cascade, where the static nonlinearity is a full-wave rectification. The band-pass filter would simply reflect the mechanical property of cercal hair sensilla, whereas the low-pass filter represents the transfer at synapses between the cercal afferents and the interneurons. The nonlinear response thus explains the difference in the directional sensitivity while the differentiating first-order kernel explains the velocity sensitivity of the interneurons. We show that 101 and 107 respond most preferentially to wind from the left versus right, whereas 102, 103, 111, and 203 respond to wind from the front versus rear. Thus, it is suggested that there are two subsystems responding maximally to wind displacement along two coordinate directions, one for the longitudinal direction and the other for the transverse direction. On the other hand, the full-wave-rectifier nonlinear interneurons are omnidirectional, and thus suggested to code simply the power of the wind displacement.

Quality control is very important in relation to invasive and lengthy treatments, such as integrated orthodontic and surgical correction of dentofacial deformities. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to compare self-reported somatosensory disturbances and quantitative sensory testing (QST) findings between two groups of patients and a healthy control group (n = 24); one group (n = 21) scheduled for bimaxillary orthognathic surgery (BOS) (pre-op) and one group (n = 24) examined 1(1/2) years after BOS (post-op). Self-reported data on pain and somatosensory disturbances were collected, and QST was performed at six trigeminal and one extratrigeminal site. Sensitivity to brush stroke, tactile stimuli, pinprick, two-point-discrimination threshold (2P-DT), pinch pain threshold (PiPT) and pressure pain threshold (PPT) was evaluated. Results were analysed with anovas, Spearman's Correlation, and chi square tests. Eight per cent of post-op patients reported intra-oral, 46% extra-oral, and 46% no somatosensory disturbances. Sensitivity to brush stroke, pinprick and 2P-DT was significantly increased at all examination sites in the post-op patients compared with healthy controls (P0.002). Tactile thresholds and PPT did not differ between groups (P0.071). Pinch pain threshold were decreased in pre-op patients compared with controls (P0.040). Self-reported somatosensory disturbances were not correlated with QST findings. In conclusion; 1(1/2) years after BOS, a large proportion of patients reported somatosensory disturbances and was hypersensitive to mechanical stimuli when compared with pre-op patients and healthy controls. Pre-op patients showed minor somatosensory changes. In addition to patients serving as their own control in prospective studies, a healthy control group and extratrigeminal control sites should be included in future studies.

We studied characteristics of sampling electromagnetic calorimeters comprising of lead absorber and 1 mm diameter scintillating fibers with wavelength-shifter readout using 1–5 GeV electrons. The volume ratio of lead to scintillator was kept at approximately 4:1 for compensation. Fibers were arranged to be perpendicular to incident electrons. Scintillation lights were detected by a pair of photomultiplier tubes through wavelength-shifter plates placed perpendicularly to the two ends of fibers. Two fiber assembly techniques were employed. Photoelectron statistics and energy resolution were compared with those of conventional tile scintillator calorimeter modules.

TbMnO(3) exhibits a spontaneous electric polarization along c concomitantly with a spiral spin ordering modulated along b below T_{C} = 28 K. We have performed inelastic x-ray scattering measurements on a single crystal of TbMnO(3) to clarify whether phonon anomalies related to the ferroelectricity exist. We measured transverse modes, especially the Mn-O-Mn bending mode polarized along c and propagating along b, which we expect is most relevant to the ferroelectricity. However, no anomaly was found in the phonon dispersion below 50 meV across T_{C}. The present result suggests that the mechanism of ferroelectricity in TbMnO(3) is different from that of a conventional displacive-type ferroelectric. The weak coupling between electric polarization and lattice in TbMnO(3) strongly suggests that the ferroelectricity is mainly derived from the spiral spin ordering.
