Four cerium compounds - (HPy)2[CeCl6]·2(HPyCl) (Ce1-1), (HPy)2[CeCl6] (Ce1-2), (HPy)m[Ce38O56-x(OH)xCl50(H2O)12]·nH2O (Ce38), and (HPy)m[Ce52O80-x(OH)xCl59(H2O)17]·nH2O (Ce52) - were crystallized from acidic aqueous solutions using pyridinium (HPy) counterions. The latter consists of two unique cerium oxide nanoclusters that are built from 52 metal ions and represents the largest chloride capped {CeIII/IVO} and/or {MIVO} (M = Ce, Th, U, Np, Pu) nanocluster that adopts the fluorite-type structure of MO2 that has been reported.

Understanding the stability fields and decomposition products of various metal- and actinide-oxide nanoclusters is essential for their development into useful materials for industrial processes. Herein, we explore the spontaneous transformation of the sulfate-centered, phosphate functionalized uranyl peroxide nanocluster {U20P6} to {U24} under aqueous ambient conditions using time-resolved small-angle X-ray scattering, Raman, and 31P NMR spectroscopy. We show that the unusual μ-η1:η2 bridging mode of peroxide between uranyl ions observed in {U20P6} may lead to its rapid breakdown in solution as evidenced by liberation of phosphate groups that were originally present as an integral part of its cage structure. Remarkably, the uranyl peroxide moieties present after degradation of {U20P6} undergo cation-mediated reassembly into the {U24} cluster, demonstrating the propensity of the uranyl peroxide systems to preserve well-defined macro-anions.

Herein, we report a new salt of a pyrophosphate-functionalized uranyl peroxide nanocluster {U24Pp12} (1) exhibiting Oh molecular symmetry both in the solid and solution. Study of the system yielding 1 across a wide range of pH by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, small-angle X-ray scattering, and a combination of traditional 31P and diffusion-ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) NMR affords unprecedented insight into the amphoteric chemistry of this uranyl peroxide system. Key results include formation of a rare binary {U24}·{U24Pp12} (3) system observed under alkaline conditions, and evidence of acid-promoted decomposition of {U24Pp12} (1) followed by spatial rearrangement and condensation of {U4} building blocks into the {U32Pp16} (2) cluster. Furthermore, 31P DOSY NMR measurements performed on saturated solutions containing crystalline {U32Pp16} show only trace amounts (∼2% relative abundance) of the intact form of this cluster, suggesting a complex interconversion of {U24Pp12}, {U32Pp16}, and {U4Pp4-x} ions.

Recent accidents resulting in worker injury and radioactive contamination occurred due to pressurization of uranium yellowcake drums produced in the western U.S.A. The drums contained an X-ray amorphous reactive form of uranium oxide that may have contributed to the pressurization. Heating hydrated uranyl peroxides produced during in situ mining can produce an amorphous compound, as shown by X-ray powder diffraction of material from impacted drums. Subsequently, studtite, [(UO2)(O2)(H2O)2](H2O)2, was heated in the laboratory. Its thermal decomposition produced a hygroscopic anhydrous uranyl peroxide that reacts with water to release O2 gas and form metaschoepite, a uranyl-oxide hydrate. Quantum chemical calculations indicate that the most stable U2O7 conformer consists of two bent (UO2)(2+) uranyl ions bridged by a peroxide group bidentate and parallel to each uranyl ion, and a μ2-O atom, resulting in charge neutrality. A pair distribution function from neutron total scattering supports this structural model, as do (1)H- and (17)O-nuclear magnetic resonance spectra. The reactivity of U2O7 in water and with water in air is higher than that of other uranium oxides, and this can be both hazardous and potentially advantageous in the nuclear fuel cycle.

Rare earth elements (REE) in calcium apatite have been widely described in the literature. Based on the investigations of minerals and their synthetic analogs, the mechanism of substitution of REE3+ for Ca2+ and their structural positions are well established. Although the presence of REE in natural pyromorphite has been reported, the structural response of substitution of REE3+ for Pb2+ is not established. A better understanding of REE-rich Pb-apatite may facilitate the potential use of this mineral in industrial processes. Two La-doped pyromorphite analogs [Pb5(PO4)3Cl] and two control pyromorphite analogs (with the absence of La) were synthesized from aqueous solutions at 25 °C. Na+ and K+ were used as charge-compensating ions to facilitate the incorporation of trivalent REE cations (La3+ + Na+ ↔ 2Pb2+ and La3+ + K+ ↔ 2Pb2+). Microprobe analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy were used to confirm the purity of obtained phases. High-precision crystal structure refinements (R1 = 0.0140–0.0225) of all four compounds were performed from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. The La content varied from 0.12(1) to 0.19(1) atoms per formula unit with the counter ions of K+ and Na+, respectively. Both substituting ions were accommodated at the Pb1 site only. By comparing the La-doped pyromorphite analogs with their control samples, it was possible to detect small changes in bond distances and polyhedral volumes caused by the La substitution. Variations in individual and mean interatomic distances reflected the cumulative effect of both the amount of substitution and ionic radii of substituting ions (La3+, Na+, and K+). Thermodynamic parameters have been measured for synthetic analogs of the mimetite- group minerals Pb5(AsO4)3X (X = OH, Cl, Br, I) belonging to the apatite supergroup. Phases precipitated from aqueous solutions under ambient conditions with well characterized structures and compositions were studied. For each phase, dissolution enthalpy was experimentally determined by oxide melt drop solution calorimetry in a molten solvent of sodium molybdate (3Na2O·4MoO3) at 976 K. The enthalpy of formation from the elements Δ H f , e l ∘ was calculated using thermochemical cycles and was −3030.6 ± 11.5, −3026.6 ± 15.8, −2967.6 ± 25.0, and −2993.1 ± 12.2 kJ/mol for Pb5.00(AsO4)3.00OH0.86(CO3)0.07, Pb5.00(AsO4)3.00Cl0.80(CO3)0.10, Pb5.00(AsO4)3.00Br0.80(CO3)0.10, and Pb5.00(AsO4)3.00I0.45OH0.35(CO3)0.10, respectively. These Δ H f , e l ∘ values exhibit typical trends for apatites: they increased (were less negative) with the increasing molar mass and ionic radius of X and decreased with the electronegativity and ionization energy of X. The compilation and comparison of data for Ca-, Pb-, P-, and As-apatites revealed correlations indicating that thermodynamic enthalpic stability is largely influenced by chemical factors (e.g., differences in electronegativities of the elements, ionization energy, or ionic characteristics of the bonds) and to a lesser extent by physical and geometric parameters in the crystal structure related to the mass and size of the X anion. Using the correlations, it was possible to estimate the value of hitherto unknown Δ H f , e l ∘ for Pb5(AsO4)3F, −3144.3 ± 66.5 kJ/mol. The observed relationships apply to the entire apatite supergroup and can be used to predict the values of Δ H f , e l ∘ for phases that have not been studied experimentally. The new data on environmentally significant phases will contribute to the modeling of mineral-water interactions, particularly for potential use in the remediation of soils and wastes contaminated with Pb and As and in the immobilization of radioactive waste containing I-129.
