Abstract

Motor activity of humans displays complex temporal fluctuations which can be characterized by scale-invariant statistics, thus documenting that structure and fluctuations of such kinetics remain similar over a broad range of time scales. Former studies on humans regularly deprived of sleep or suffering from sleep disorders predicted change in the invariant scale parameters with respect to those representative for healthy subjects. In this study we investigate the signal patterns from actigraphy recordings by means of characteristic measures of fractional point processes. We analyse spontaneous locomotor activity of healthy individuals recorded during a week of regular sleep and a week of chronic partial sleep deprivation. Behavioural symptoms of lack of sleep can be evaluated by analysing statistics of duration times during active and resting states, and alteration of behavioural organization can be assessed by analysis of power laws detected in the event count distribution, distribution of waiting times between consecutive movements and detrended fluctuation analysis of recorded time series. We claim that among different measures characterizing complexity of the actigraphy recordings and their variations implied by chronic sleep distress, the exponents characterizing slopes of survival functions in resting states are the most effective biomarkers distinguishing between healthy and sleep-deprived groups., Comment: Communicated at UPON2015, 14-17 July 2015, Barcelona. 21 pages, 11 figures; updated: figures 4-7, text revised, expanded Sec. 1,3,5

Abstract

Advantages of introducing the electron structure function (ESF) in electron induced processes are demonstrated. Contrary to the photon structure function it is directly measured in such processes. At present energies a simultaneous analysis of both the electron and the photon structure functions gives an important test of the experimentally applied methods. Estimates of the ESF at currently measured momenta are given. At very high momenta contributions from $W$ and $Z$ bosons together with $\gamma$-$Z$ interference can be observed. Abstract

At present energies the same experiment gives more precise description of the electron than photon structure. The momentum scales entering the process are better controlled. At very high momenta probabilistic (partonic) interpretation can be preserved despite strong \gamma -Z interference. Abstract

The hadronic part of the electron structure function F2e has been measured for the first time, using e+e− data collected by the DELPHI experiment at LEP, at centre-of-mass energies of s=91.2–209.5 GeV . The data analysis is simpler than that of the measurement of the photon structure function. The electron structure function F2e data are compared to predictions of phenomenological models based on the photon structure function. It is shown that the contribution of large target photon virtualities is significant. The data presented can serve as a cross-check of the photon structure function F2γ analyses and help in refining existing parameterisations.

Abstract

The hadronic part of the Electron Structure Function (ESF) has been measured for the first time, using e+e- data collected by the DELPHI experiment at LEP, at centre-of-mass energies sqrt(s) = 91.2-209.5 GeV. The data analysis is simpler than that of the measurement of the photon structure function. The ESF data are compared to predictions of phenomenological models based on the photon structure function. It is shown that the quasi-real photon virtuality contribution is significant. The presented data can serve as a cross-check of the photon structure function analyses and help in refining existing parametrizations.

Abstract

The pharmacokinetics of cinoxacin, a new synthetic organic compound useful in the treatment of urinary tract infection, were evaluated in 20 patients with chronic renal failure and in 4 normal subjects. The half-life of cinoxacin closely correlated with creatinine clearance as did the amount of cinoxacin excreted in the urine. Urinary concentrations were adequate to inhibit susceptible microorganisms even in patients with severe renal failure. 26. Hypercalcaemia due to hyperparathyroidism in a patient with chronic renal failure and renal carcinoma.

Abstract

A 65-year-old woman with a history of a left heminephrectomy for renal carcinoma developed hypercalcaemia 11 years after the operation. The same kidney was found to contain a recurrent renal carcinoma. After the radical nephrectomy of the left kidney, hypercalcaemia remitted but reappeared 11 months later. The right kidney was small but functioned at a level of creatinine clearance of 10--15 ml/min. Metastatic work-up was negative, and secondary causes of hypercalcaemia were excluded. A neck exploration revealed a parathyroid adenoma. With parathyroid resection the serum calcium declined to normal, and the risk of hypercalcaemic nephropathy in the remaining kidney was precluded. Abstract

1. Simultaneous thoracic duct and hepatic lymph flows were measured in 29 mongrel dogs before and after the intravenous administration of mannitol, ethacrynic acid, frusemide and chlorothiazide in separate experiments. 2. Thoracic duct lymph flow increased significantly after each diuretic agent was administered. 3. Hepatic lymph flow increased only after ethacrynic acid and mannitol administration. Frusemide and chlorothiazide did not alter hepatic lymph flow. 4. These data show that increases in thoracic duct lymph flow after ethacrynic acid and mannitol arise partly from the liver, as well as from other organs.

Abstract

1. Effective renal plasma flow, glomerular filtration rate and cardiac output were measured in osmotically loaded dogs before and during comparable acute respiratory and metabolic acidosis. 2. Urine output increased in control dogs and in animals with metabolic acidosis, but declined with respiratory acidosis. Effective renal plasma flow and glomerular filtration rate declined with respiratory and metabolic acidosis. 3. When respiratory acidosis was buffered with sodium bicarbonate, urine volume increased and glomerular filtration rate and effective renal plasma flow were unchanged; with trihydroxymethylaminomethane, urine volume increased but glomerular filtration rate and effective renal plasma flow fell. 4. When metabolic acidosis was buffered with sodium bicarbonate, urine volume increased; with trihydroxymethylaminomethane, urine volume increased but glomerular filtration rate fell. Cardiac output declined only during metabolic acidosis, both buffered and unbuffered. 5. These studies demonstrate that, even with osmotic loading: (1) respiratory acidosis causes a decrease in glomerular filtration rate, effective renal plasma flow and urine volume; (2) metabolic acidosis depresses glomerular filtration rate and effective renal plasma flow but does not change urine volume even though cardiac output falls; (3) sodium bicarbonate is more effective than trihydroxymethylaminomethane in preserving renal function during respiratory and metabolic acidosis.

31. Diuretics and small intestinal lymph flow in the dog.

Abstract

Simultaneous measurements of thoracic duct lymph flow and small intestinal lymph flow were carried out in mongrel dogs after the administration of mannitol, ethacrynic acid, furosemide and chlorothiazide. Thoracic duct lymph flow increased only after injection of mannitol. Intestinal lymph flow increased after injection of all diuretics except chlorothiazide. Furthermore, mannitol produced simultaneous increases in thoracic duct and intestinal lymph flows. The durations of response of the increased lymph flows from each lymph channel produced by mannitol were statistically identical. The durations of increased intestinal lymph flows observed with each drug were: 40+/-3 (S.E.), 43+/-2 and 38+/-2 minutes for mannitol, ethacrynic acid and furosemide, respectively. Mean arterial blood pressures and inferior vena cava pressures did not change from the control to the experimental state in any animal studied. Similarly measurements of serum and lymph sodium, potassium and protein concentrations were unchanged from the control to the experimental state. These studies demonstrate that mannitol simultaneously increases thoracic duct lymph flow as well as intestinal lymph flow. Secondly, the results suggest that the increases in thoracic duct lymph flow after ethacrynic acid and furosemide administration, observed in previous studies arose primarily from the small intestine.

Abstract

Heat treatment of the weld of the steam generator is investigated in this paper. Annealing is realized by system of heating elements that are placed on casing of the generator. An experiment using real parameters and a computational fluid dynamics analysis using COMSOL Multiphysics software were performed. Experimental data were compared with results of the analysis. Boundary conditions for numerical prediction had been derived on basis of results obtained from a supplementary calibration experiment. There was good correlation between predicted and measured data. Based on results it can be stated that 67 heating elements with heating output of 60-70 % of maximum range is sufficient number for required heat treatment. Web of Science 55 4 744 741
