Abstract The emergence of van der Waals (vdW) materials resulted in the discovery of their high optical, mechanical, and electronic anisotropic properties, immediately enabling countless novel phenomena and applications. Such success inspired an intensive search for the highest possible anisotropic properties among vdW materials. Furthermore, the identification of the most promising among the huge family of vdW materials is a challenging quest requiring innovative approaches. Here, we suggest an easy-to-use method for such a survey based on the crystallographic geometrical perspective of vdW materials followed by their optical characterization. Using our approach, we found As2S3 as a highly anisotropic vdW material. It demonstrates high in-plane optical anisotropy that is ~20% larger than for rutile and over two times as large as calcite, high refractive index, and transparency in the visible range, overcoming the century-long record set by rutile. Given these benefits, As2S3 opens a pathway towards next-generation nanophotonics as demonstrated by an ultrathin true zero-order quarter-wave plate that combines classical and the Fabry–Pérot optical phase accumulations. Hence, our approach provides an effective and easy-to-use method to find vdW materials with the utmost anisotropic properties.

Here, we adapted a femtosecond laser ablation for the synthesis of WSe2 nanoparticles (NPs) with diameters from 5 to 150 nm, which conserve the crystalline structure of the original bulk crystal. This method was chosen due to its inherently substrate-additive-free nature and a high output level. The obtained nanoparticles absorb light stronger than the bulk crystal thanks to the local field enhancement, and they have a much higher photothermal conversion than conventional Si nanospheres. The highly mobile colloidal state of produced NPs makes them flexible for further application-dependent manipulations, which we demonstrated by creating substrates for SERS sensors.

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), particularly molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), have gained significant attention in the field of optoelectronics and photonics due to their unique electronic and optical properties. The integration of TMDCs with plasmonic materials allows to tailor the optical response and offers significant advantages for photonic applications. This study presents a novel approach to synthesize MoS2-Au nanocomposites utilizing femtosecond laser ablation in liquid to achieve tunable optical properties in the near-infrared (NIR) region. By adjusting ablation and fragmentation protocols, we successfully synthesize various core–shell and core–shell–satellite nanoparticle composites, such as MoS2/MoSxOy, MoSxOy/Au, and MoS2/MoSxOy/Au. UV-visible absorption spectroscopy unveils considerable changes in the optical response of the particles depending on the fabrication regime due to structural modifications. Hybrid nanoparticles exhibit enhanced photothermal properties when subjected to NIR-I laser irradiation, demonstrating potential benefits for selective photothermal therapy. Our findings underscore that the engineered nanocomposites not only facilitate green synthesis but also pave the way for tailored therapeutic applications, highlighting their role as promising candidates in the field of nanophotonics and cancer treatment.

Abstract The growing family of two-dimensional crystals has been recognized as a promising platform for investigation of rich low-dimension physics and production of a variety of devices. Of particular interest are recently reported atomic sheets of non-van der Waals materials, which reshape our understanding of chemical bonds and enable heterostructures with novel functionality. Here, we study the structural and optical properties of ultrathin non-van der Waals InGaS3 sheets produced by standard mechanical cleavage. Our ab initio calculations reveal weak out-of-plane covalent bonds, responsible for the layered structure of the material. The energy required for isolation of a single layer is as low as ~50 meVÅ–2, which is comparable with the conventional van der Waals material’s monolayer isolation energies of 20–60 meVÅ–2. A comprehensive study of the structural, vibrational, and optical properties of the material reveals its wide bandgap (2.73 eV), high refractive index (>2.5) and negligible losses in the visible and infrared spectral ranges. These properties make it a perfect candidate for visible-range all-dielectric nanophotonics.

The combination of photothermal and magnetic functionalities in one biocompatible nanoformulation forms an attractive basis for developing multifunctional agents for biomedical theranostics. Here, we report the fabrication of silicon–iron (Si-Fe) composite nanoparticles (NPs) for theranostic applications by using a method of femtosecond laser ablation in acetone from a mixed target combining silicon and iron. The NPs were then transferred to water for subsequent biological use. From structural analyses, it was shown that the formed Si-Fe NPs have a spherical shape and sizes ranging from 5 to 150 nm, with the presence of two characteristic maxima around 20 nm and 90 nm in the size distribution. They are mostly composed of silicon with the presence of a significant iron silicide content and iron oxide inclusions. Our studies also show that the NPs exhibit magnetic properties due to the presence of iron ions in their composition, which makes the formation of contrast in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) possible, as it is verified by magnetic resonance relaxometry at the proton resonance frequency. In addition, the Si-Fe NPs are characterized by strong optical absorption in the window of relative transparency of bio-tissue (650–950 nm). Benefiting from such absorption, the Si-Fe NPs provide strong photoheating in their aqueous suspensions under continuous wave laser excitation at 808 nm. The NP-induced photoheating is described by a photothermal conversion efficiency of 33–42%, which is approximately 3.0–3.3 times larger than that for pure laser-synthesized Si NPs, and it is explained by the presence of iron silicide in the NP composition. Combining the strong photothermal effect and MRI functionality, the synthesized Si-Fe NPs promise a major advancement of modalities for cancer theranostics, including MRI-guided photothermal therapy and surgery.

Carbon-based nanoparticles (CNPs) have demonstrated great potential in biomedical applications because of their unique physical and chemical properties, and excellent biocompatibility. Herein, we have studied two types of CNPs with gadolinium (Gd) impurities (Gd-CNPs), which were prepared by microwave synthesis (MWS) and hydrothermal synthesis (HTS), for potential applications as photoluminescent (PL) labels and contrast agents in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The prepared Gd-CNPs were investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, UV–visible absorption spectroscopy, and magnetic-resonance relaxometry, which allowed us to reveal specific features and functional properties of the prepared samples. While the TEM data showed similar size distributions of both types of Gd-CNPs with mean sizes of 4–5 nm, the optical absorption spectroscopy showed higher absorption in the visible spectral region and stronger PL in the red and near-infrared (NIR) spectral regions for the MWS samples in comparison with those prepared by HTS. Under green light excitation the former samples exhibited the bright red-NIR PL with quantum efficiency of the order of 10%. The proton relaxometry measurements demonstrated that the HTS samples possessed longitudinal and transverse relaxivities of about 42 and 70 mM−1s−1, whereas the corresponding values for the MWS samples were about 8 and 13 mM−1s−1, respectively. The obtained results can be useful for the selection of appropriate synthesis conditions for carbon-based nanoparticles for bimodal bioimaging applications.

Photocatalytic CO2 reduction and the production of hydrogen are urgent tasks of green energy. One of the most studied semiconductor photocatalysts for this purpose is titanium dioxide. However, it has a number of fundamental limitations that do not allow its application for such tasks on an industrial scale. Another class of promising materials, which is being investigated very actively, are two-dimensional materials based on MXenes. In this work, we present the first results on photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and CO2 reduction using TiNbC/TiO2 heterostructures with TiNbC contents of 1, 5, and 10%. The approach to the creation of heterostructures proposed in this work may become a significant breakthrough in the search for new highly efficient systems for carbon dioxide reduction and hydrogen production.

In this study, the technology for producing ridge waveguides with a minimal roughness of the sidewalls and material surface in a near-waveguide region was developed with the purpose of fabricating miniature photonic integrated circuits on a LiNbO3 substrate. Plasma etching processes were used for the ridge waveguide fabrication on different material substrates. The specifications of the equipment and plasma source, method of mask fabrication and substrate material determined the process conditions for producing ridge waveguides with minimal sidewall roughness. In this work, for the ridge waveguide fabrication, the processes of reactive ion etching of LiNbO3 with a chromium mask were carried out in a mixture of SF6/Ar with an ICP/TCP plasma source. The process of plasma etching the LiNbO3 with the ICP/TCP plasma source is not well studied, especially for integrated photonics purposes. As a result of our experimental work, the narrow ranges of technological parameters suitable for producing ridge waveguides on LiNbO3 with smooth sidewalls, a slope angle of 60°–75° and a minimal quantity of observed defects in the near-waveguide region were identified. A model explaining the kinetics of the etching process of LiNbO3 in SF6/Ar plasma as a physical–chemical process was proposed.

Layers of germanium (Ge) nanowires (NWs) on titanium foils were grown by metal-assisted electrochemical reduction of germanium oxide in aqueous electrolytes based on germanium oxide without and with addition of sodium silicate. Structural properties and composition of Ge NWs were studied by means of the scanning and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy. When sodium silicate was added to the electrolyte, Ge NWs consisted of 1–2 at.% of silicon (Si) and exhibited smaller mean diameter and improved crystallinity. Additionally, samples of Ge NW films were prepared by ultrasonic removal of Ge NWs from titanium foils followed with redeposition on corundum substrates with platinum electrodes. The electrical conductivity of Ge NW films was studied at different temperatures from 25 to 300 °C and an effect of the silicon impurity on the thermally activated electrical conductivity was revealed. Furthermore, the electrical conductivity of Ge NW films on corundum substrates exhibited a strong sensor response on the presence of saturated vapors of different liquids (water, acetone, ethanol, and isopropanol) in air and the response was dependent on the presence of Si impurities in the nanowires. The results obtained indicate the possibility of controlling the structure and electrical properties of Ge NWs by introducing silicate additives during their formation, which is of interest for applications in printed electronics and molecular sensorics.
