Mass-spring is one of the most used structures in sensors and actuators of MEMS technology, including accelerometers, gyroscopes, harvesters, etc. Some of the major design parameters of the structure are natural frequency and displacement sensitivity. The limitations of microfabrication processes should be considered in the design process. The optimized geometry topology can reduce the area occupied by the structure in the fabrication and increases the number of possible structures per wafer. This study aims to provide a novel systematic design and optimization of a MEMS mass-spring system by using a dimensionless design flowchart. Based on the dimensionless design, this algorithm provides the designer with the optimized dimensions of the mass-spring by following the provided dimensionless diagrams, taking into account stress, displacement sensitivity, natural frequency, and fabrication limitations. Also, the optimized dimensions of the mass-spring system are obtained using the dimensionless design flowchart with respect to the desired natural frequency and displacement sensitivity. In addition, genetic algorithms and dimensionless diagrams present a procedure to minimize the footprint of the structure while keeping the desired natural frequency and displacement sensitivity. Results demonstrate that up to a 3% change in both natural frequency and displacement sensitivity, leads to a 45% reduction in the structure area compared to the related literature of MEMS accelerometers. Underwater object detection is an important task in marine exploration. The existing autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) designs typically lack an integrated object detection module and are constrained by communication limitations in underwater environments. This results in a situation where AUV, when tasked with object detection missions, require real-time transmission of underwater sensing data to shore-based stations but are unable to do so. Consequently, the task is divided into two discontinuous phases: AUV acquisition of underwater data and shore-based object detection, leading to limited autonomy and intelligence for the AUV. In this paper, we propose a novel autonomous online underwater object detection system for AUV based on side-scan sonar (SSS). This system encompasses both hardware and software components and enables AUV to perform simultaneous data acquisition and object detection for underwater objects, thereby providing guidance for coherent AUV underwater operations. Firstly, this paper outlines the hardware design and layout of a portable integrated AUV for reconnaissance and strike missions, achieving online object detection through the integration of an acoustic processing computer. Subsequently, a modular design for the software architecture and a multi-threaded parallel design for the software workflow are developed, along with the integration of the YOLOv7 intelligent detection model, addressing three key technological challenges: real-time data processing, autonomous object detection, and intelligent online detection. Finally, lake experiments show that the system can meet the autonomy and real-time requirements of predefined object detection on AUV, and the average positioning error is better than 5 m, which verifies the feasibility and effectiveness of the system. A large amount of vibration energy is dissipated in the secondary suspension systems of railway freight wagons, which can be harvested as renewable power supplies to serve more smart devices for onboard applications. This paper explores the vibration energy harvesting potential of freight wagons and deals with the systematic design issues of energy-regenerative shock absorbers (ERSAs). By considering the ERSA force interaction and realistic track irregularity, a vehicle-track coupled model is established to predict a more accurate vibration response. The parameter sensibility analysis reveals that the operation speed, vehicle load, and track irregularity are the most critical factors that can significantly affect the power generation performance. In addition, vibration energy harvesting potential assessment is conducted on American, German, and Chinese track spectrums and several field-measured freight lines, indicating an average power potential ranging from 33 to 960 W per absorber with a full-loaded freight wagon running at 90 km/h. Finally, a systematic design approach for ERSAs is proposed based on the prior feasibility assessment, a hybrid Grey Wolf Optimization and Particle Swarm Optimization (GWO-PSO) algorithm, and the vehicle-ERSA coupled model. The digital twin of an ERSA has been established and validated by a series of experimental tests. Taking the average power as the objective and setting the suspension vibration velocity, maximum generator rotation velocity, and maximum ERSA force as constraints, the optimized ERSA exhibits an output power of 63 W and 20.22% shock absorption on the secondary suspension. Meanwhile, the GWO-PSO has demonstrated an enhanced exploration ability than the conventional GWO in dealing with the constrained optimization problem of the ERSA design. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A 10-b self-timed SAR A/D converter is designed in 28-nm FDSOI CMOS to convert at 500 MS/s. It maintains this effective number of bits across an input bandwidth of 2 GHz, because it will be used as one of eight identical converters in a time-interleaved system to reach a conversion rate of 4 GS/s. This circuit is based almost entirely on formal expressions for every building block circuit. This approach led to a strikingly short development time where every design choice was defensibly optimum and the prototype chip yielded near-textbook performance from the first silicon. In this paper, a sequential Taguchi method for design optimization of an induction motor (IM) for an electric vehicle (EV) is presented. First, a series of empirical and mathematical relationships is systematically applied to reduce the number of possible stator slot rotor bar (SSRB) combinations. Then, the admissible optimal combinations are investigated and compared using finite element (FE) simulation over the NEDC driving cycle, and the three best combinations are selected for further analysis. Each topology is optimized over the driving cycle using the k-means clustering method to calculate the representative working points over the NEDC, US06, WLTP Class 3, and EUDC driving cycles. Then, using the Design of Experiment (DOE)-based Taguchi method, a multi-objective optimization is carried out. Finally, the performance of the optimized machines in terms of robustness against manufacturing tolerances, magnetic flux density distribution, mechanical stress analysis, nominal envelope curve and efficiency map is carried out to select the best stator slot rotor bar combination. It is also found that the K-means clustering method is not completely robust for the design of electric machines for electric vehicle traction motors. The Mars rotorcraft is an aerial exploration platform capable of repeated take-offs and landings to extend the range of rover explorations. NASA's Ingenuity helicopter is a full y functioning coaxial helicopter for technology demonstration. Increasing the rotor diameter or the number of blades can enhance the load capacity of the coaxial helicopter but would make it difficult to be folded. A more suitable configuration for Mars exploration is the multi-rotor aircraft, which has a stronger load capacity with the same rotor diameter. Although the aerodynamic performance and operational capabilities of the Mars multi-rotor aircraft have been partially considered, mechatronic system design and autonomous flight control have not been fully addressed. Harbin Institute of Technology and China Academy of Space Technology jointly proposed a deployable Mars quadcopter for air patrol and sampling with a sample mass of 100 g. This paper presents a concept for a Mars quadcopter and its mission operations, including operational procedures and flight modes, to provide a framework for future Mars flight sampling missions. We describe the structure and avionics architecture of the Mars quadcopter. Then, we present the hardware and software design of the guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) system to illustrate the autonomous flight control method. This study aims to provide a comprehensive critical review of the existing body of evidence pertaining to gait rehabilitation. It also seeks to introduce a systematic approach for the development of innovative design solutions in this domain. The field of gait rehabilitation has witnessed a surge in the development of novel robotic devices. This trend has emerged in response to limitations observed in most commercial solutions, particularly regarding their high costs. Consequently, there is a growing need to explore more cost-effective alternatives and create opportunities for greater accessibility. Within the realm of cost-effective options, linkage-based gait trainers have emerged as viable alternatives, prompting a thorough examination of this category, which is carried out in this work. Notably, there is a wide heterogeneity in research approaches and presentation methods. This divergence has prompted discourse regarding the standardization of key elements relevant to the proposals of new linkage-based devices. As a result, this study proposes a comprehensive and standardized design process and offers a brief illustration of the application of this design process through the presentation of a potential new design. Investment in the productive systems of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the manufacturing sector is usually quite limited. For this reason, normal practice is to apply minor developments internally or upgrade equipment as it becomes obsolete to increase their productive capacity and competitiveness at a lower cost. However, the work team, mostly made up of engineers, does not usually have experience in the use of design methodologies but also they are often familiar with the functioning of various design and quality-management tools. This paper presents a clear and simple design methodology that facilitates the development of adaptations to items of equipment that might be considered one-off products. It includes a selection of design tools that are, according to the literature on the subject, the most common and best-known among engineers, and which are also best-suited to the environment of an SME. The design methodology was validated experimentally with the upgrading of a gear-rolling tester installed on the premises of an SME in the sector. The recommended techniques and tools were satisfactory applied opening the possibilities for further application of the methodology in similar machine's upgrades in the future. Recent technological progress is opening up practical applications for quadruped robots. In this context, comprehensive performance demands, including speed, payload, robustness, terrain adaptability, endurance, and techno-economics, are increasing. However, design conflicts inevitably exist among these performance indicators, highlighting design challenges, especially for a heavy-duty, electrically actuated quadruped robots, which are strongly constrained by motor torque density and battery energy density. Starting from task-specific holistic system thinking, in this paper, we present a novel task-oriented approach to the design of such kind of robots, incorporating hierarchical optimization and a control-in-the-loop design, while following a structured design path that effectively exploits the strengths of both heuristic and computational designs. Guided by these philosophies, we utilize heuristic design to obtain the approximate initial form of the prototype and propose a key task-oriented actuator joint configuration, utilizing commercially available components. Subsequently, we build a step-wise analytical models considering trajectory optimization and motor heat constraints for optimization of leg length and joint match parameters to achieve a compact performance requirement envelope and minimize redundancy in the construction of task-specific components. Furthermore, we construct a holistic simulation platform with a module control algorithm for typical scenarios to evaluate subsystem results and adjust design parameters iteratively, balancing conflicts and eventually achieving a reliable design specification for detailed subsystem design. Based on these strategies, we develop a heavy-duty electric prototype achieving a maximum speed of 2 m/s in trotting gait with a load weighting over 160 kg and enduring a period of 2 h. Rapid 3D optical scanning of points or patterned light is widely employed across applications in microscopy, material processing, adaptive optics and surveying. Despite this broadness in applicability, embodiments of 3D scanning tools may vary considerably as a result of the specific performance needs of each application. We present here a micromirror arraybased modular framework for the systemic design of such high-speed scanning tools. Our framework combines a semicustom commercial fabrication process with a comprehensive simulation pipeline in order to optimally reconfigure pixel wiring schemes across specific applications for the efficient allocation of available degrees of freedom. As a demonstration of this framework and to address existing bottlenecks in axial focusing, we produced a 32-ring concentric micromirror array capable of performing random-access focusing for wavelengths of up to 1040 nm at a response rate of 8.75 kHz. By partitioning the rings into electrostatically driven piston-mode pixels, we are able to operate the array through simple openloop 30 V drive, minimizing insertion complexity, and to ensure stable operation by preventing torsional failure and curling from stress. Furthermore, by taking advantage of phase-wrapping and the 32 degrees of freedom afforded by the number of independently addressable rings, we achieve good axial resolvability across the tool's operating range with an axial fullwidth- half-maximum to range ratio of 3.5% as well as the ability to address focus depth-dependent aberrations resulting from the optical system or sample under study.

Since the global zero carbon goal was proposed, most higher education institutions around the world are still in the process of transitioning towards carbon neutrality. However, there is still a research gap in the systematic design strategy for a zero carbon campus. This study adopts a qualitative literature analysis approach to establish a theoretical framework for a zero carbon campus design. The framework hierarchically outlines the One Top-Down vision of carbon neutrality, two complementary paths of carbon emission reduction and carbon sink, specific implementation strategies based on the coupling of the social, technological, and ecological dimensions, as well as the establishment of a carbon-neutral smart services platform. Subsequently, a case study was conducted at the Fahua campus of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, guided by this theoretical framework. This study not only completed the modeling and visualization of the carbon-neutral systematic design of the campus but also attempted to conceive of people-centered services under the zero carbon commitment and emphasized the critical role of university campus culture and historical connotations in the carbon-upgrading process. The results showed that the establishment of this theoretical framework can inspire innovative localized carbon-neutral solutions for campus, empower the replicability of advanced zero carbon campuses, and more effectively promote the carbon neutrality development of communities and cities. This study focuses on Grounded Theory, which is one of the qualitative research designs. Glaser and Strauss developed the Grounded Theory; it has been revised by other scientists, resulting in three distinct Grounded Theory approaches: the systematic design (Corbin and Strauss approach), the classical design (Glaser approach), and the constructivist approach (Charmaz approach). This research aims to discover the key characteristics of grounded theory through a comprehensive examination of these three methods and to show the systematic design in depth. In Grounded Theory research, the systematic design is favoured above other designs, so it is essential to understand the application steps carefully. As a result, the systematic design, which is similar to other designs in terms of fundamental characteristics, exhibits coding stage variances. Virtual or physical models of ancient machines are often used for museum exhibitions, documentaries and/or cinematographic works. Especially for high-fidelity models, complex activities are required, which actually lead the different stakeholders involved in the process to “design” an artifact (the model). As with any design process, the design of models of ancient machines can also benefit from the support of structured methods that guide the designers from the early “ideas” to the final design. This paper proposes a systematic approach specifically tailored for the interpretation and design of ancient machines, where a methodological tool is provided to manage both idea-generation and information-gathering activities. The method was applied to the design of a model of the delta wing conceived by Leonardo da Vinci (i.e., the glider represented in the Codex Madrid 1, Folio 64r), allowing to analyze and obtain an embodiment of the machine with the required fidelity level, thought to be realized in real scale.

Synthetic promoters are particularly relevant for application not only in yeast expression systems designed for high-level heterologous protein production but also in other applications such as metabolic engineering, cell biological research, and stage-specific gene expression control. By designing synthetic promoters, researcher can create customized expression systems tailored to specific needs, whether it is maximizing protein production or precisely controlling gene expression at different stages of a process. While recognizing the limitations of endogenous promoters, they also provide important information needed to design synthetic promoters. In this review, emphasis will be placed on some key approaches to identify endogenous, and to generate synthetic promoters in yeast expression systems. It shows the connection between endogenous and synthetic promoters, highlighting how their interplay contributes to promoter development. Furthermore, this review illustrates recent developments in biotechnological advancements and discusses how this field will evolve in order to develop custom-made promoters for diverse applications. This review offers detailed information, explores the transition from endogenous to synthetic promoters, and presents valuable perspectives on the next generation of promoter design strategies. This paper explores sanitary engineering through the sewage system in Gyeonseong in Japanese colonial era. Once being carried out to build a new district in Hanseoung in Korean Empire, after Japanese colonial power took over the country, the project of constructing sewage system was reorganized according to its planning. The purpose of the project, as proclaimed by Japanese colonizers, was to build Gyeongseong as a sanitary city. Nevertheless, the ambition of the project was never fully realized. There was a fundamental limitation within the sewage system that the Japanese colonial government sought to construct. The colonial sewage system was unable to collect all night soil in Gyeongseong; thus, the exceeded amount of excrement had to be disposed of through an open sewer in Cheonggyecheon. By exploring the sewage system this paper asserts that the sanitary engineering under Japanese colonial power was constructed of depleted expert training system, substantial dependence on metropole, uneven construction for different district, limited sewerage material industry, and faulty construction which includes, but not limited to, inadequate dredging, poorly established bridges and levees. The Gyungseong sewage project, which was practiced based on Japanese sanitary engineering, failed to achieve the goals of sanitary engineering. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The increasing demand of power and the need to reduce our dependency on fossil resources represent an opportunity to valorise low-to-medium grade heat streams such as mild hot streams from industry and natural brines into electricity. A systematic approach is required for the simultaneous selection of thermodynamic cycle which includes its configuration, the thermal fluid, and the optimal operating conditions. A methodology that integrates heuristics, for pre-screening, machine learning, to include rigorous thermodynamics, and mathematical optimization, for process flowsheet design is proposed. The pre-screening yields three fluids, benzene, toluene and 1,1,1,2,3,3,3-heptafluoropropane (R227ea) and two promising cycles, dual pressure organic Rankine cycle (ORC) and organic flash Rankine cycle (OFRC). The mathematical optimization shows that for temperatures over 120 °C, the OFRC using Benzene is the configuration of choice in terms of thermodynamic performance, but the ORC provides the most economical electricity. For hot resources below 120 °C, the efficiency of both cycles converges, but the best fluid turns out to be R227ea alongside the dual ORC cycle showing better performance and lower cost. The cooling costs present a minimum at ΔT min equal to 8 °C. The results on process design are used to evaluate a exploitation of geothermal resources across Spain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents a concise review on the forestry research, which involves application of a Nelder wheel experimental design, a type of systematic design for spacing trials. Short presentation of the design is included, practical applications of various objectives and methodological approaches to data analysis are outlined and the pros and cons of the design are discussed.

Low profitability from jute farming, declining jute area and negligible pulse area are the rising concerns of farmers of Indo-Bangla subcontinent. This paper evaluated the extent of yield competition in jutemungbean intercropping with varying spatial geometry under alternate single row (SR) and double row (DR) planting. Two 2-year field experiments were conducted independently for the two systems of plantings involving jute (cv NJ 7010) and mungbean (cv TMB-37) arranged in systematic designs for 3×3×3 spacing and plant density combinations with three replications. Yield competition was assessed using indices. Intercropping was found productive and profitable compared to sole cropping. Land equivalent ratios (LER) and area × time equivalent ratios (ATER) always exceeded unity. Jute equivalent yield (JEY) increased in the range of 4.9-45.3% and 30.7-51.1% over sole jute fibre yield and mean monetary advantage index exceeded 27100 and 31800 ₹ ha-1 for SR and DR planting, respectively. Economic advantage was higher for spacing combinations of 40 cm (row to row) × 6.5-8 cm (jute to jute in a row) × 10-12 cm (mungbean to mungbean in a row) in SR planting and for DR system it was at a band-to-band spacing of 11 cm with plant densities of 40-50 m-2 for jute and 25-30 m-2 for mungbean. This article aims to provide a new perspective on how the deployment of general type-2 (GT2) fuzzy sets affects the mapping of a class of fuzzy logic controllers (FLCs). It is shown that an α-plane represented a GT2-FLC is easily designed via baseline type-1 and interval type-2 FLCs and two design parameters (DPs). The DPs are the total number of α planes and the tuning parameter of the secondary membership function that are interpreted as sensitivity and shape DPs, respectively. We provide a clear understanding and interpretation of the sensitivity and shape DPs on controller performance through various comparative analyses. We present design approaches on how to tune the shape DP by providing a tradeoff between robustness and performance. We also propose two online scheduling mechanisms to tune the shape DP. We explore the effect of the sensitivity DP on the GT2-FLC and provide practical insights on how to tune the sensitivity DP. We present an algorithm for tuning the sensitivity DP that provides a compromise between computational time and sensitivity. We validate our analyses, interpretations, and design methods with experimental results conducted on a drone. In Section 1 the approach of improving crop yields by the development of agriculture and addition of various mineral or organic substances in the last 200–300 years is investigated. In Section 2 the principle of randomized experiments is treated. Section 3 describes the variety trials of field crops. The elimination of effects in two dimensions is shown in Section 4 on Row–Column designs. Fertilizer trials are treated in Section 5 (qualitative factors) and in Section 6 (quantitative factors). The effects of diesel engine combustion chamber design have important influences on the formation and combustion processes of the gas mixture, and greatly affect the power capability, fuel economy, and emissions of the engines. In order to make the design of the diesel engine combustion chamber more systematic and rigorous, the concept of diesel engine combustion chamber systematic design was proposed, which was elaborated from five aspects of design experience, design parameters, design criteria, factor processing methods, and response analysis methods. Nine design methods of combustion chamber were classified through combining three factor processing methods and three response analysis methods. The design method consisting of the factor sampling design method and the second type of the response analysis method was selected to illustrate its application process due to its effectiveness and convenience. A four-valve-head direct-injection diesel engine was analyzed, and a transient in-cylinder flow model was established. Under the assumption of an approximately constant compression ratio, the impacts of four different ω-shape combustion chamber structures on gas flow motions in cylinder were compared and analyzed. These four combustion chambers were named type A, B, C and D with shrinkage ratios of 16.4%, 6.1%, 9.8%, and 9.8%, respectively. The design evaluation criteria were gas flow velocity and turbulence kinetic energy. The results showed that the geometrical structures of the combustion chambers had little influence on the in-cylinder gas flow motions during the intake stroke and the early stage of the compression stroke, while they exhibited significant impacts during the late stage of the compression stroke. The average squish velocity and reverse squish velocity of the Type C combustion chamber, which had a conical bottom shape, was greater than that of the Type D combustion chamber having a spherical bottom by 25.2% and 26.4% respectively during the crank angle interval from 20° before the top dead center (BTDC) to 20° after the top dead center (ATDC). The average turbulence kinetic energy of the Type A combustion chamber with a shrinkage ratio of 16.4% was greater than that of the Type D combustion chamber with a shrinkage ratio of 9.8% by 25.4% during the crank angle interval from 20° BTDC to 20° ATDC. Compared to the type A and D combustion chambers that had a elliptic bottom shape and a spherical bottom shape, respectively, the type B and C combustion chambers that had a 45° conical bottom shape exhibited stronger capabilities of maintaining turbulence kinetic energy and reverse squish intensity. This paper describes the designing and manufacturing process of a complex special utility vehicle (SUV) using the methodical design approach for which the basics were explained decades ago in Germany. The application steps of the design methodology with comprehensive data are clearly outlined and the experiences gained during the project along with the authors’ experiences in design research and design practice over 25 years are generously shared. This paper contributes to the methodical approach laid by Pahl & Beitz with an industrial example proving its applicability in real engineering design applications. The proposed solutions for difficulties encountered in the process are especially valuable and applicable for SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) in the field. Such details are reported with comprehensive discussions in this paper.

Two faults that can occur in an inverter, open-circuit and short-circuit, are investigated. To improve dynamic responses during open-circuit and short-circuit conditions, predictive controllers are proposed. A systematic design for predictive controllers is presented here. By using predictive controllers, PMSM drive systems yield better responses than with proportional–integral controllers, including faster recovery time and a smaller drop in speed when the inverter is in a faulty state. A 32-bit digital signal processor, TMS 320F2808, is used to execute the control algorithms. Several measured results demonstrate the proposed method, which can be easily applied in industry due to its simplicity and superiority.

This article presents a concise review on the forestry research, which involves application of a Nelder wheel experimental design, a type of systematic design for spacing trials. Short presentation of the design is included, practical applications of various objectives and methodological approaches to data analysis are outlined and the pros and cons of the design are discussed. Causal inference and generalizability both matter. Historically, systematic designs emphasize causal inference, while representative designs focus on generalizability. Here, we suggest a transformative synthesis – Systematic Representative Design (SRD) – concurrently enhancing both causal inference and "built-in" generalizability by leveraging today's intelligent agent, virtual environments, and other technologies. In SRD, a "default control group" (DCG) can be created in a virtual environment by representatively sampling from real-world situations. Experimental groups can be built with systematic manipulations onto the DCG base. Applying systematic design features (e.g., random assignment to DCG versus experimental groups) in SRD affords valid causal inferences. After explicating the proposed SRD synthesis, we delineate how the approach concurrently advances generalizability and robustness, cause-effect inference and precision science, a computationally-enabled cumulative psychological science supporting both "bigger theory" and concrete implementations grappling with tough questions (e.g., what is context?) and affording rapidly-scalable interventions for real-world problems. As one non-surveillance study method, soft clustering is well applied in the data mining, the imagery processing, the pattern recognition, the spatial remote sensing technology and the characteristic extraction and so on state-of-the-art applications in many domains all have the widespread application. Inspired by the combination of neural network and soft computing model, in this paper, we propose the novel multimedia data stream information mining model based on jointed neural network and soft clustering. In the self-training process, we train a learner on a tagged sample set and then use the learner to mark an unlabeled sample that it considers to be highly reliable and add the newly labeled sample to the original training set, then use this new training set to re-train the learner and repeat the above process until the iteration condition is terminated. To better play to the performance of the main processor and then save address space resources with the wishbone protocol implementation the separation of the high-low speed hierarchical interconnection structure GPU is applied. Due to the growing global energy needs, renewable energy systems, particularly wave energy converters (WECs), are a feasible solution to satisfy current energy demand. Recently, wave farms with diverse technologies, geometries, and layouts have been developed; however, evaluating the performance of these devices is complicated and requires precise hydrodynamic modeling to efficiently deploy wave farms. This study proposes a multi-scenario model using boundary element method (BEM) solver, NEMOH, integrated with evolutionary many-objective algorithms to evaluate the performance of a multi-axis point absorber WEC with respect to cylindrical, triangular, quadrilateral, and octagonal geometries and varying dimensions, that is, radius, draft, and height. To this end, six objective functions were considered to maximize the energy absorption and significant velocity and to minimize the separation distance, levelized cost of energy, net present value, and q -factor. Accordingly, three EMnO frameworks were utilized: the non-dominated sorings genetic algorithm (NSGA-III), reference point-based NSGA-III (R -NSGA-III), and multi-objective evolutionary algorithm by decomposition (MOEA/D). The results of the three optimization algorithms indicate that R -NSGA-III converges faster than the other two and also found that the cylindrical and octagonal geometries produce more annual energy among other forms. Comparing the performances of the three different layouts for cylindrical and octagonal geometries reveals that the arrow layout with thirty buoys produced more energy and had a lower levelized cost of energy and net present value. Hemodynamic activities, as an essential measure of physiological and psychological characteristics, can be used for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease detection. Photoplethysmography imaging (iPPG) can be applied for such purposes with non-contact advances, however, most cardiovascular hemodynamics of iPPG systems are developed for laboratory research, which limits the application in pervasive healthcare. In this study, a video-based facial iPPG detecting equipment was devised to provide multi-dimensional spatiotemporal hemodynamic pulsations for applications with high portability and self-monitoring requirements. A series of algorithms have also been developed for physiological indices such as heart rate and breath rate extraction, facial region analysis, and visualization of hemodynamic pulsation distribution. Results showed that the new device can provide a reliable measurement of a rich range of cardiovascular hemodynamics. Combined with the advanced computing techniques, the new non-contact iPPG system provides a promising solution for user-friendly pervasive healthcare.

The applications using electric motors have increased in the last decade. Some of these applications encounter the need for tailor-made motors that must meet demanding requirements. Therefore, the specification stage of an electric motor is a critical part of its development. If this stage is properly addressed, then future failures in the development process can be avoided. This paper presents a requirement engineering framework to support small-medium electric motors designers/manufacturers with the development of their product. The framework identifies the stakeholders and the tasks that they should undertake to finish a successful requirements specification stage. The framework is made from the designer/manufacturer's perspective and it emphasizes the derivation of specialized requirements (lower-level).
