Cardiovascular diseases pose a major threat to both life expectancy and quality of life worldwide, and a concerning level of disease burden has been attained, particularly in middle- and low-income nations. Several drugs presently in use lead to multiple adverse events. Thus, it is urgently needed to develop safe, affordable, and effective management of cardiovascular diseases. Emerging evidence reveals a positive association between polyphenol consumption and cardioprotection. Whole wheat grain and allied products are good sources of polyphenolic compounds bearing enormous cardioprotective potential. Polyphenolic extract of the entire wheat grain contains different phenolic compounds viz. ferulic acid, caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, p-coumaric acid, sinapic acid, syringic acid, vanillic acid, apigenin, quercetin, luteolin, etc. which exert cardioprotection by reducing oxidative stress and interfering with different toxicological processes. The antioxidant capacity has been thought to exert the cardioprotective mechanism of wheat grain polyphenolics, which predominantly suppresses oxidative stress, inflammation and fibrosis by downregulating several pathogenic signaling events. However, the combined effect of polyphenolics appears to be more prominent than that of a single molecule, which might be attained due to the synergy resulting in multimodal cardioprotective benefits from multiple phenolics. The current article covers the bioaccessibility and possible effects of wheat-derived polyphenolics in protecting against several cardiovascular disorders. This review discusses the mechanistic pharmacology of individual wheat polyphenols on the cardiovascular system. Arisarum vulgare O. Targ. Tozz. (Araceae), locally known as "Elbgouga," holds significant traditional importance in Algeria for the treatment of various human ailments, including pain, infections, inflammation, digestive disorders, cancer, skin problems, eczema, wounds, and burns. The aim of this study was to explore for the first time the phytochemical profile, antioxidant, antibacterial, and inhibitory effects on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) enzymes, DNA protection, and capacity to promote wound healing. Preliminary phytochemical experiments were conducted to evaluate the major classes of bioactive compounds, in addition to the total phenol and flavonoid amounts in AVEE. An LC‐MS/MS analysis was conducted to clarify the phytochemical composition of this particular botanical species. The antioxidant capacity was assessed using DPPH· and ABTS·+ radical scavenging tests. The agar diffusion approach was used to ascertain the antibacterial efficacy against four bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecium, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella typhimurium). Cholinesterase inhibition was evaluated using a colorimetric method that relies on Ellman's reaction. The protective effects of AVEE on pBR322 plasmid DNA damaged by H2O2 and UV treatment were assessed by their DNA‐breaking forms. The in vivo acute dermal toxicity and wound healing potential of the AVEE ointment (1–5% AVEO) were also investigated, and histological analyses were carried out on biological samples. Five protein targets were the subject of an in silico molecular docking investigation (TNFα, TGFBR1, IL‐1ß, GSK‐3ß, and NOS) and ADMET studies of the main components of the extracts were performed. The screening of phytochemicals revealed a significant concentration of phenolic compounds (176.00 ± 1.08 mg of gallic acid equivalents/g of dry extract), mainly flavonoids (81.21 ± 1.24 mg of quercetin equivalents/g of dry extract). Three major compounds were identified by LC‐MS/MS analysis, belonging mainly to the class of flavonoids, with rutin as the most abundant compound (11.85 mg/g extract), followed by hesperidin (4.125 mg/g extract). A conspicuous presence of isoquercitrin (1.327 mg/g extract) was also found. Small amounts of flavonoids and phenolic acids were also detected (catechin, chlorogenic acid, syringic acid, salicylic acid, kaempferol, and luteolin). DPPH assay showed higher antioxidant capacity compared to the ABTS·+ assay (142.60 ± 5.52 µg/mL and 236.10 ± 0.22 µg/mL, respectively). AVEE was effective against all selected bacterial strains; however, the highest zone of inhibition (36.00 ± 0.1 mm) was noted against E. faecium. The extract of the plant significantly inhibited both AChE and BChE (89.98 ± 18.76 µg/mL inhibitory activity against AChE and 98.28 ± 44.68 µg/mL inhibitory activity against BChE, respectively). The ethanolic extract of A. vulgare and quercetin exhibited more significant DNA protection action in form I, with percentages of 90.41 and 94.23%, respectively, compared to form II, where the percentages were 27.91 and 51.92%, respectively. The AVEO formulation may be safely administered by topical application. A statistically significant wound contraction was discovered in the group treated with 5% AVEO compared to the groups that were not treated or treated with petroleum jelly. Furthermore, there was no notable disparity detected between the group treated with 5% AVEO and the group treated with the reference drug. The 5% AVEO‐treated group showed, after the research was complete, the most significant percentage of wound contraction (96.90 ± 0.42%). Moreover, the topical application of the formulation improved histological parameters. In silico study showed that rutin, hesperidin, and isoquercitrin had a high affinity to the five main targets that might contribute to the wound healing potential of A. vulgare ethanolic extract. Buffalo meat is naturally perishable, making it susceptible to spoilage due to its high moisture content and vulnerability to microbial contamination. Edible coatings have attracted attention as a packaging method that can prolong the shelf life of meat. The study aimed to examine the impact of a combination of Lepidium sativum mucilage (LS) coating and propolis extract (PE) on prolonging the shelf life of buffalo meat. The chemical characteristics (chemical compounds, total phenol content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), antioxidant activity, and cytotoxicity) and antimicrobial activity of the PE (disk diffusion agar, well diffusion agar, minimum inhibitory concentration, and minimum bactericidal concentration) were investigated. The effect of the PE on the cell wall of pathogenic bacteria was examined using a scanning electron microscope. Biological properties of LS (TPC, TFC, antioxidant activity and antimicrobial effect (pour plate method)) was investigated. Different concentrations of PE (0, 0.5, 1.5, and 2.5%) were added to the coating mixture containing LS, and their effects on extending the shelf life of buffalo meat samples stored at 4°C for 9 days were assessed. The PE included gallic acid, benzoic acid, syringic acid, 4–3 dimethoxy cinnamic acid, p-coumaric acid, myricetin, caffeic acid, luteolin, chlorogenic acid, and apigenin. The PE was determined to have a TPC of 36.67 ± 0.57 mg GAE/g and a TFC of 48.02 ± 0.65 mg QE/g. The extract's radical scavenging activity ranged from 0 to 76.22% for DPPH radicals and from 0 to 50.31% for ABTS radicals. The viability of C115 HeLa cell was observed to be 94.14 μg/mL. The PE and LS, exhibited strong antimicrobial properties against pathogenic bacteria. The LS was determined to have a TPC of 15.23 ± 0.43 mg GAE/g and a TFC of 11.51± 0.61 mg QE/g. The LS was determined to have a DPPH of 429.65 ± 1.28 μg/mL and a ABTS of 403.59 ± 1.46 μg/mL. The microbiological analysis revealed that the LS+2.5%PE treatment was the most effective in inhibiting the growth of total viable count (6.23 vs. 8.00 log CFU/g), psychrotrophic bacteria count (3.71 vs. 4.73 log CFU/g), coliforms count (2.78 vs. 3.70 log CFU/g), and fungi count (2.39 vs. 3.93 log CFU/g) compared to the control sample. The addition of PE to the edible coating also demonstrated a concentration-dependent effect on preserving the moisture, pH, color, and hardness of the buffalo meat. Sensory evaluation results suggested that incorporating PE into the edible coating extended the shelf life of buffalo meat by three days. In the second stage of this paper, this investigation employed two distinct forecasting methodologies: the Radial Basis Function (RBF) and the Support Vector Machine (SVM), to predict a range of quality indicators for coated meat products. Upon comparison, the RBF model exhibited a higher level of accuracy, showcasing its exceptional capacity to closely match the experimental outcomes. Therefore, this type of food coating, renowned for its strong antimicrobial properties, has the potential to effectively package and preserve perishable and delicate food items, such as meat. Practical Application This study investigated the effects of preheat treatment (70–100 °C) and syringic acid (SA) grafting on the antioxidant, antibacterial, and physicochemical properties of black soybean protein isolate (BSPI) before and after in vitro digestion. The results revealed that both preheat treatment and SA grafting increased the digestibility and the absolute zeta potential value of BSPI. However, as the preheating temperature increased, the antioxidant ability of BSPI decreased, which was improved by SA grafting. During in vitro digestion, the absolute zeta potential and antioxidant activities of preheated BSPI and preheated BSPI–SA complex followed the order: intestine > gastric > before digestion. Compared with before digestion, preheated BSPI with its SA complex after in vitro digestion exhibited excellent antibacterial activities. Importantly, the preheated BSPI–SA complex enhanced the SA recovery rate during digestion and SA stability, with the highest recovery rate observed for the SA‐grafted BSPI with preheat treatment at 100°C (BSPI100–SA). The principal component analysis sufficiently distinguished preheated BSPI and preheated BSPI–SA complexes. There were partitions between BSPI and BSPI–SA treated at different preheating temperatures. This study contributes to expanding the potential applications of BSPI with its SA complex in food products and offers guidance for designing SA delivery systems.Preheated BSPI–SA complexes could serve as functional ingredients in food or health products. Astragalus membranaceus (AM) roots are a well-known homologous medicine and food in China. AM stems, which are discarded and not used effectively, also contain many active compounds and exhibit beneficial effects. It has the potential to be explored as antibiotic alternative. Fermentation combined with enzymatic hydrolysis (FEH) is an effective strategy for extracting polyphenol and improving the usage of AM stems. Therefore, in this study, the conditions of FEH and extraction for polyphenol in AM stems were screened. The antioxidant activity of extract from AM stems without and with FEH (AMSE and FAMSE) was evaluated. The metabolite profiles of phenolic acids and flavonoids in AMSE and FAMSE were characterized by ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC–ESI-MS/MS). The results showed that the highest polyphenol content from AM stems was obtained with cellulase and pectinase (1:1, 2000 U/g), moisture content 43%, fermentation temperature 30 °C, and fermentation time 7 days. Selected extraction conditions of polyphenol were ethanol concentration 50%, ultrasonic power 500 W, extraction temperature 35 °C, and extraction time 40 min. On this condition, compared with AMSE, the polyphenol and flavonoid contents in FAMSE were significantly higher. FAMSE exhibited stronger DPPH, hydroxyl radical scavenging rate and reducing power than AMSE. The relative content of 3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-propionic acid, dihydroferulic acid, isoferulic acid, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, 4-hydroxyphenyllactic acid, ferulic acid, vanillic acid, syringic acid, gentisic acid, sinapic acid, apigenin, tricin, acacetin, daidzein, genistein, formononetin, prunetin, pratensein, rhamnocitrin and galangin were significantly upregulated in FAMSE. Application of agricultural by-products in the functional food and beverage industry is currently gaining prominence. Banana (Musa spp) is a popular tropical fruit with global production of 124.97 million tonnes. The banana production industry contributes to large amount of solid waste/ banana by-products, such as, pseudostem and inflorescence. Palayankodan (Musa × paradisiaca Mysore AAB group), Nendran (Musa × paradisiaca AAB group) and Njalipoovan (Musa × paradisiaca AB group) are three popular and common cultivars in Kerala, a state in South India. The present study was aimed to extract the potential bioactive compounds from the pseudostem and inflorescence of the above-mentioned cultivars and to standardise the process of microencapsulation using spray drying. Ultrasonication assisted extraction using ethanol as solvent was carried out. The extract and wall material parameters were standardised for microencapsulation. The encapsulated powders were analysed for encapsulation yield, retention efficiency, physical properties, phytochemical composition, antioxidant potential and anti-diabetic activity. The encapsulation yields and retention efficiencies of the encapsulated powders were found to be approximately 75 and 70.51%, respectively. Results revealed that the powders exhibited lower bulk density, good solubility and reconstitutability. Scanning electron microscopy was also conducted to reveal the particle morphology. All the powders exhibited smooth, spherical shape, with no pores. The phenolic and flavonoid contents of the encapsulated pseudostem and inflorescence extract powders ranged from 2.75 to 3.13 mg GAE/ g of powder and 34.83 to 46.67 mg QE/g of powder, respectively. The present study also reported the in vitro bioactive properties, in terms of antioxidant and anti-diabetic activities of the encapsulated powders. The HPLC analysis of the microencapsulated powders revealed the presence of gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, trans cinnamic acid, trans ferulic acid, epicatechin and syringic acid. A precursor feeding strategy was used for the first time in agitated microshoot cultures of Aronia × prunifolia. This strategy involved the addition of biogenetic precursors of simple phenolic acids (phenylalanine, cinnamic acid, and benzoic acid) and depsides (caffeic acid) into the culture media, with an assessment of its effect on the production of these bioactive compounds. The in vitro cultures were maintained in Murashige–Skoog medium (1 mg/L BAP and 1 mg/L NAA). Precursors at five concentrations (0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 5.0, and 10.0 mmol/L) were fed into the medium at the time of culture initiation (point "0") and independently on the 10th day of growth cycles. The contents of 23 compounds were determined in methanolic extracts of biomass collected after 20 days of growth cycles using an HPLC method. All extracts contained the same four depsides (chlorogenic, neochlorogenic, rosmarinic, and cryptochlorogenic acids) and the same four simple phenolic acids (protocatechuic, vanillic, caffeic, and syringic acids). Chlorogenic and neochlorogenic acids were the predominant compounds in all extracts (max. 388.39 and 263.54 mg/100 g d.w.). The maximal total contents of all compounds were confirmed after feeding with cinnamic acid (5 mmol/L, point "0") and caffeic acid (10 mmol/L, point "0"), which caused a 2.68-fold and 2.49-fold increase in the contents of the estimated compounds vs. control cultures (603.03 and 558.48 mg/100 g d.w., respectively). The obtained results documented the efficacy of the precursor feeding strategy in enhancing the production of bioactive compounds in agitated cultures of A. × prunifolia and suggest a potential practical application value. Pulmonary inflammation is a condition that can result from different diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and influenza as well as other antigenic substances including a high-fat diet. The potency of syringic acid (SYR), a bioactive substance with therapeutic properties, was evaluated on high-fat (HF) diet–induced pulmonary inflammation in male Wistar rats. Thirty male rats were randomly grouped into five: control, SYR (50 mg/kg), HF only, HF + SYR (25 mg/kg), and HF + SYR (50 mg/kg). Animals were sacrificed after 7 weeks of SYR treatments. Blood, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), and lungs were collected for biochemical and histopathological analyses. SYR at 50 mg/kg significantly reversed the HFD-induced dyslipidemia. Furthermore, the observed alterations in both the enzymic and non-enzymic oxidative indicators (MDA, SOD, CAT, and GST) due to intake of HF were ameliorated by SYR. A further dose-dependent increase in GSH was observed following treatments. The increased levels of inflammatory cytokines (NF-κB, IL6, TNF-α, and COX-2) quantified in the BALF and lung tissue were significantly lowered when treated with SYR. Furthermore, exposure to HF lowered the inflammatory indices (albumin) quantified in the BALF, while the levels of LDH and globulin were significantly increased. Also, inflammatory indices including platelet/lymphocytes and (neutrophils × platelets)/lymphocytes quantified in the BALF were significantly lowered with SYR treatments, while over twofold increase in albumin/globulin ratio was recorded by 50 mg/kg SYR. SYR demonstrated antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects via inhibition of HF-induced activation of pro-inflammatory cytokines in rats. Mercury (Hg) is one of the most toxic heavy metals that damage testicular tissue. Mercury chloride (HgCl2) is one of the most toxic forms of mercury that can easily cross biological membranes. Syringic acid (SA) is a natural flavonoid found in many vegetables and fruits. In this study, the effects of SA against HgCl2‐induced testicular damage in rats were determined by biochemical, histopathological, and spermatological analyses. For this study, a total of 35 Spraque Dawley rats were used. Rats were divided into five groups as control, HgCl2, SA 50, HgCl2 + SA 25, and HgCl2 + SA 50. HgCl2 was administered intraperitoneal (IP) at a dose of 1.23 mg/kg/bw, while SA was administered by oral gavage at doses of 25 and 50 mg/kg/bw. The rats were then sacrificed, and testicular tissues were removed. HgCl2 caused an increase in MDA level and a decrease in SOD, CAT, and GPx activity and GSH level in the testicular tissue of rats. HgCl2 is involved in the increase of eIF2‐α, PERK, ATF‐4, ATF‐6, CHOP, NF‐κB, TNF‐α, IL‐1β, Apaf‐1, Bax, and Caspase‐3 mRNA expression. HgCl2 caused a decrease in sperm motility, an increase in the rate of abnormal sperm and sperm DNA fragmentation in rats. However, SA oral administration dose‐dependently inhibited endoplasmic reticulum stress, oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis and preserved epididymal sperm quality and testicular histoarchitectures. Bisphenol A (BPA), an endocrine disruptor, is commonly used to produce epoxy resins and polycarbonate plastics. Continuous exposure to BPA may contribute to the development of diseases in humans and seriously affect their health. Previous research suggests a significant relationship between the increased incidence of neurological diseases and the level of BPA in the living environment. Syringic acid (SA), a natural derivative of gallic acid, has recently considered much attention due to neuromodulator activity and its anti-oxidant, anti-apoptotic, and anti-inflammatory effects. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of SA on oxidative stress, apoptosis, memory and locomotor disorders, and mitochondrial function, and to identify the mechanisms related to Alzheimer's disease (AD) in the brain of rats receiving high doses of BPA. For this purpose, male Wistar rats received BPA (50, 100, and 200 mg/kg) and SA (50 mg/kg) for 21 days. The results showed that BPA exposure significantly altered the rats' neurobehavioral responses. Additionally, BPA, by increasing the level of ROS, and MDA level, increased the level of oxidative stress while reducing the level of antioxidant enzymes, such as SOD, CAT, GPx, and mitochondrial GSH. The administration of BPA at 200 mg/kg significantly decreased the expression of ERRα, TFAM, irisin, PGC-1α, Bcl-2, and FNDC5, while it increased the expression of TrkB, cytochrome C, caspase 3, and Bax. Moreover, the Western blotting results showed that BPA increased the levels of P-AMPK, GSK3b, p-tau, and Aβ, while it decreased the levels of PKA, P-PKA, Akt, BDNF, CREB, P-CREB, and PI3K. Meanwhile, SA at 50 mg/kg reversed the behavioral, biochemical, and molecular changes induced by high doses of BPA. Overall, BPA could lead to the development of AD by affecting the mitochondria-dependent apoptosis pathway, as well as AMPK/PGC-1α/FNDC5 and CREB/BDNF/TrkB signaling pathways, and finally, by increasing the expression of tau and Aβ proteins. Ephedra alata Decne is a medicinal plant widely used in traditional medicine for the management of bronchial asthma and cancer. Phytochemical analysis and biological activities, including antioxidant and anticancer effects, were investigated in the current work as new findings for the plant E. alata, a species growing wildly in the marsh and saline environments of the central area of Saudi Arabia. The Ultra Pressure Liquid Chromatography coupled with Electron spray ionization-Quadropole-Time of flight (UPLC-ESI-Q-TOF) system was used for the phytochemical analysis of the plant constituents. In addition, Polyphenolic profiling including the total phenolic (TPC) and flavonoid (TFC) contents of the plant extracts were measured. Phenolic acids were found at the highest relative percentages among all the identified compounds and were measured at 66.07 mg GAE (Gallic acid equivalent). The UPLC analysis of the E. alata extract indicated the presence of chlorogenic acid, syringic acid, caffeic acid, vanillic acid, rosmarinic acid, umbelliferone, isorhoifolin, and apigenin at the highest relative percentages. Mineral analysis indicated that the microelement content of E. alata was relatively low, except for magnesium (Mg). In vitro antioxidant assays revealed the ability of the plant to scavenge DPPH free radicals, reduced molybdenum ions, and ferrous at levels of 14.63, 19.97, and 27.78 mg Trolox equivalents, respectively. The extract induced transition metal chelation at 31.36 mg EDTA equivalents. The extract induced cytotoxic effects against MDA-231 and A549 cell lines at IC50 levels of 25.31 and 39.81 µg/mL, respectively. The plant extract inhibited the colonization and migration of cancer cells as part of its potential anticancer effects. In addition, major E. alata constituents like isorhoifolin, chlorogenic acid, apigenin, and rosmarinic acid exhibited the lowest binding energy to the CAIX enzyme at − 8.41, − 6.64, − 6.32, and − 6.26 kcal/mol, respectively, compared to the binding energy (− 7.72 kcal/mol) of the co-crystallized ligand (Y0R). The docking results further supported the selection of the CAIX enzyme as a standard predictive therapeutic target, since it exhibited significant binding interactions with the major constituents of the plant. Introduction: Indigenous plants have historically been crucial in treating human diseases across various cultures worldwide. Research continues to uncover new therapeutic uses for indigenous plants, from treating infectious diseases to managing chronic conditions such as diabetes and wound care. This study aimed to examine the effect of palm tree leaves "Phoenix dactylifera L" extract and its topical film formulation on wound healing and blood glucose levels. Methods: Palm leaves were collected, authenticated, powdered, and extracted with ethanol by cold maceration. Saponins were isolated. The dried extract was analyzed using reverse-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography to identify the phytochemicals present. Diabetes mellitus was induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of Streptozotocin (40mg/kg). Rats with blood glucose levels ≥ 200 mg/dl were used to determine the reduction in blood glucose with or without the oral extract. Incision and excision wounds were induced in both diabetic and normal rats. Topical films containing extract or saponin and inert films were applied to the wounds every other day, and wound sizes were recorded until the wound was completely healed. Results: The presence of six flavonoids, Naringin, Rutin, Quercetin, Kaempferol, Apigenin, and Catechin, and five phenolic acids, Syringic acid, p Coumaric acid, Caffeic acid, Ferulic acid, Ellagic acid were detected in the dried extract. A significant reduction in blood sugar in diabetic rats and wound diameter in the treated group compared to the control group in both diabetic and normal rats was observed, confirming the promising role of palm leaf extract on diabetes and wound care. Macroscopic, morphometric, and histological data suggested that the cutaneous wound healing in rats treated with the leaf extract was better and faster than the control or inert groups. Conclusions: Our research findings highlight the marked effect of Phoenix dactylifera extract as a supportive or alternative treatment for both hyperglycemia and incision or excision wounds. This work studies the partition of phenolic compounds, namely caffeic acid, syringic acid, vanillic acid, ferulic acid, and vanillin, in aqueous two-phase systems (ATPSs) formed by acetonitrile and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) based on choline chloride ([Ch]Cl) and carbohydrates (sucrose, d-glucose, d-mannose, arabinose, and d-xylose). The binodal curves built at 25 °C and 0.1 MPa using DES were compared with ATPS composed of [Ch]Cl and the same carbohydrates. The ability to form ATPS depends on the number and kind of hydroxyl groups in DES's hydrogen-bond donor compound (carbohydrates). ATPS based on DES showed biphasic regions larger than the systems based on [Ch]Cl and carbohydrates alone due to the larger hydrophilicity of DES. The ATPS were used to study the partition of the phenolic compounds. For all the systems, the biomolecules preferentially partitioned to the acetonitrile-rich phase (K > 1), and the best recovery in the top phase ranged between 53.36% (caffeic acid) and 90.09% (vanillin). According to the remarkable results, DES-based ATPS can selectively separate ferulic acid and vanillin for the top phase and syringic, caffeic, and vanillic acids for the bottom phase, achieving a selectivity higher than two. Pigmented rice grass juice (RGJ) is a good source of bioactive compounds, but fresh juice has a relatively short shelf life of only 7 days at 4 °C. The objectives of this study were to determine the optimal growth stage of pigmented rice grass, investigate the optimal condition of high-pressure processing (HPP) for bacterial inactivation in inoculated RGJ using response surface methodology (RSM), and evaluate quality changes in uninoculated HPP-treated juice during storage at 4 °C compared with heat-treated (85 °C/10 min) and untreated samples. Results revealed that the optimal growth stage of rice grass was 9 days with the highest total anthocyanin content of 158.92 mg/L. The optimal condition of HPP was determined to be 612 MPa, 11 min, and 36 °C, and inactivated Escherichia coli K12 and Listeria innocua with 6.43 and 5.02 log reductions, respectively, meeting FDA regulations. The lethality of bacteria after HPP treatment can be explained by damage to the cell membrane and the leakage of intracellular constituents such as protein and nucleic acid. During 12 weeks of storage at 4 °C, total plate counts and yeast and mold counts in uninoculated HPP-treated juice were not detected. Moreover, HPP did not significantly change phytochemical properties (p < 0.05), caused a minor impact on physicochemical properties of RGJ, and maintained the durability of juice samples during storage. Analysis of the phytochemical profile revealed that HPP treatment could preserve most of the phenolic compounds in RGJ and especially increase the contents of protocatechuic acid, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, syringic acid, transcinnamic acid, isorhamnetin-3-o-glucoside, quercetin, and cyanidin-3-glucoside (p < 0.05). The pursuit of an improved quality of life is a major trend in the food market. This is driving the reformulation of the industry's product portfolio, with the aim of providing nourishment while also contributing to beneficial health metabolic processes. In this context, the use of local biodiversity and the recovery of the traditional knowledge associated with the consumption of vegetables that grow spontaneously in nature emerge as more sustainable and nutritionally adequate concepts. The Amazon region is known for its abundant biodiversity, housing numerous unconventional food plants whose nutritional and biological properties remain unknown due to a lack of research. Among the different species are Xanthosoma sagittifolium, Acmella oleracea, Talinum triangulare, Pereskia bleo, Bidens bipinnata, and Costus spiralis. These species contain bioactive compounds such as apigenin, syringic acid, spilanthol, and lutein, which provide various health benefits. There are few reports on the biological effects, nutritional composition, bioactive compounds, and market prospects for these species. Therefore, this review provides an overview of their nutritional contribution, bioactive compounds, health benefits, and current market, as well as the use of new technologies that can contribute to the development of functional products/ingredients derived from them. In this study, the protective role of Urtica dioica extract (Udex) against Li2CO3 toxicity in Allium cepa L. was investigated using various parameters such as germination rates, root growth, weight gain, mitotic index (MI), malondialdehyde (MDA), micronucleus (MN), antioxidant enzyme activity, chromosomal abnormalities (CAs) and anatomical changes. As the biological activity of Udex is related to its active content, the profile of phenolic compounds was determined by LC–MS/MS analysis. Li2CO3 caused abnormalities in the tested parameters and serious regressions in germination parameters. Application of 100 mg/L Li2CO3 reduced the chlorophyll a and b contents by 73.04% and 65.7%, respectively. Li2CO3 application exhibited a cytotoxic effect by inducing significant decreases in MI and increases in the frequency of MN, and also showed a genotoxic effect by causing CAs. After 100 mg/L Li2CO3 treatment, MDA, proline, superoxide dismutase, and catalase levels increased by 54.9%, 58.5%, 47.8%, and 52.3%, respectively. Li2CO3 and Udex co-administration resulted in a regression in increased biochemical parameters and genotoxicity parameters, and an improvement in germination parameters. Furthermore, Udex demonstrated efficacy in mitigating the detrimental effects of Li2CO3 on the root tip, particularly in the 200 µg/mL Udex-treated group. The thickening of the cortex cell wall and conduction tissue, which is commonly induced by Li₂CO₃, was not observed in the Udex-treated group. The protective effect of Udex can be explained by the phenolic compounds it contains. Rutin was detected as the major component in Udex and other phenolics were listed according to their presence rate as protecatechuic acid > caffeic acid > p-coumaric acid > syringic acid > rosemarinic acid > epicatechin. Li ions, which increase in the environment after industrialization, are an important environmental pollutant and exhibit toxicity that affects many pathways in organisms. Scientific research should not only detect these toxic effects but also develop solutions to such problems. In this study, it was determined that the Udex application had a toxicity-reducing role against Li2CO3 toxicity. Botanical varieties of hemp differ in chemical composition, plant morphology, agronomy, and industrial suitability. Hemp is popular for cultivation for the production of cannabinoid oil, fiber production, biomass, etc. The fertilization process is one of the most important factors affecting the plant, both its condition and chemical composition. So far, research has been carried out proving that hemp is a valuable source of, among others: fatty acids, amino acids, acids, vitamins, numerous micro- and macroelements, and antioxidant compounds. In this experiment, it was decided to check the possibility of harvesting hemp panicles twice in one year. The purpose of this treatment is to use one plant to produce cannabidiol oil and grain. The main aim of the research was to determine bioactive compounds in hemp seeds and to determine whether the cultivation method affects their content and quantity. Based on the research conducted, it was observed that hemp can be grown in two directions at the same time and harvested twice because its health-promoting properties do not lose their value. It was found that regardless of whether hemp is grown solely for seeds or to obtain essential oils and then seeds, the type of fertilization does not affect the content of phenolic acids (e.g., syringic acid: 69.69–75.14 μg/100 g, vanillic acid: 1.47–1.63 μg/100 g). Based on the conducted research, it was found that essential oils can be obtained from one plant in the summer and seeds from Henola hemp cultivation in the autumn, because such a treatment does not affect the content of the discussed compounds. This study was intended to determine the melissopalynological characteristics, LAB color, browning index, total phenolic content, antioxidant activity, phenolic profile, and their correlations within Iranian honeys. Ten honey samples were collected from beekeepers in various floristic regions of Iran, along with two commercial multi-floral samples. To determine the antioxidant activity, three methods of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging, β-carotene bleaching, and Ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP) were used. Phenolic compounds were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detection (HPLC–DAD). Pollen analysis revealed that bees primarily fed on the Fabaceae and Asteraceae families in the Iranian flora. The local samples were taxonomically categorized as multi-floral honey. Besides, the commercial samples demonstrated the lowest levels of total phenolics and relatively poor antioxidant activity across all three methods. Syringic acid and luteolin were the predominant phenolic compounds in all samples. A strong correlation (p < 0.01) was found between color, melanoidin content and antioxidant activity, while no significant correlation existed between phenolic content and antioxidant activity. Overall, the results confirmed that examined multi-floral honeys exhibited inferior antioxidant activity compared to studies conducted in other regions worldwide, possibly due to sugar-fed bees, insufficient levels of potent phenolic constituents, and post-harvest thermal treatments. Microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) and its potentiality in plant growth and development is still an unexplored area. The in vitro study on bipartite plate showed inhibition of Fusarium oxysporum f.sp lycopersici (FOL) by volatiles of Trichoderma asperellum BHU P1 and Ochrobactrum sp. BHU-PB1 over control. The seed germination and seedling growth was recorded maximum in plant exposed to VOCs of Ochrobactrum sp. in both magenta box (in vitro) and pot (in vivo) experiment. The growth parameters as seed germination, shoot length, root length, fresh weight, dry weight, number of lateral roots and number of leaflets was compared to be higher in microbial volatile metabolites treated plants as compared to control. Disease incidence in T. asperellum and Ochrobactrum sp. volatile treated tomato plants were 43.66% and 41.33%, respectively at 20 days post inoculation (dpi) whereas untreated control showed disease incidence up to 79.16%. GC–MS analysis of volatile metabolite of T. asperellum BHU P1 detected 42 compounds and Ochrobactrum sp. BHU-PB1 detected 50 compounds over PDB and NB control. HPLC analysis of volatile treated tomato leaves showed enhanced concentration of gallic acid, t-chlorogenic acid, rutin, p-caumeric acid, cinnamic acid, ferulic acid, capsacin, salicylic acid, syringic acid and quercetin over control at 0, 48 and 72 h of FOL challenge. Above observations led to the conclusion that tomato roots which perceived the volatiles of Ochrobactrum sp. BHU-PB1 showed better plant growth promotion and enhanced plant defense, revealed by higher phenolic compound production followed by T. asperellum BHU P1 volatile treated plant. Historically, tree sap has been used globally for medicinal purposes, in fermented beverages, and for syrup production. Maple tree sap is notably concentrated into syrup and is valued as a natural sweetener rich in phenolic compounds and minerals compared to refined sugar. Recently, syrups from other trees like black walnut (Juglans nigra) and sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) have gained popularity, yet their properties are not well understood scientifically. To address this gap, we collected sycamore, black walnut, and maple syrup samples and analyzed their physicochemical and functional properties. Our findings showed significant differences among the syrups in pH, browning intensity, and water activity (p < 0.05). Sycamore syrup had the highest total phenolic content, followed by black walnut and maple syrups. Both black walnut and sycamore syrups exhibited similar antioxidant activity, significantly higher than maple syrup (p < 0.05). High-resolution mass spectrometry identified 54 phenolic acids and 22 flavonoids in these syrups, including Acetylsalicylic acid, 3,5-Dihydroxybenzoic acid, and syringic acid, known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Additionally, sycamore syrups and most black walnut syrups displayed varying degrees of antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and/or Gram-negative microorganisms. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is an alarming ailment that leads to severe liver damage and increases the risk of serious health conditions. The prevalence of NAFLD due to oxidative stress could be mitigated by plant‐derived antioxidants. This study aims to investigate the effects of syringic acid (SA) on NAFLD in a high‐fat diet (HFD) rat model. Twenty‐four rats were randomly divided into four groups (n = 6): normal control, HFD, SA‐administered HFD, and positive control SA on a normal diet. Rats in the normal control and positive control groups received a normal diet, and the remaining groups received an HFD for 8 weeks. SA (20 mg/kg b.w.) was orally (gavage) administered for 8 weeks. Lipid profiles were controlled by SA against HFD‐fed rats (p < 0.05). SA reduced the serum aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase levels by 70%–190%. SA also suppressed pro‐inflammatory cytokines and attenuated histopathological and immunohistochemical changes against HFD‐fed rats. SA reversed oxidative stress by suppressing the malondialdehyde formation by 82% and replenished the nonenzymatic and enzymatic antioxidant activities (p < 0.05). Gene expressions of nuclear factor‐erythroid 2‐related factor/heme oxygenase 1 (Nrf2/HO‐1) were elevated in SA‐treated rats. Ameliorative effects of SA on NAFLD induced by an HFD in rats were prominent through the reversal of oxidative stress and inflammation, regulated by an intrinsic mechanism of defense against oxidative stress, the Nrf2/HO‐1 pathway. Silica, as a stationary phase, has low separation efficiency accompanied by overlapping, broadened, and tailed peaks, so it needs to be modified to improve its efficiency. This study aims to develop a silica-based stationary phase modified by tetraethylene glycol (TEG) to separate phenolic compounds. Silica was modified by a chemical bond between silanol groups on the silica surface and TEG through a 3-glycidyloxypropylmethoxysilane reaction. The modified silica was packed into a capillary column and used to separate simple phenolic compounds consisting of phenol, pyrocatechol, and pyrogallol. A sample of 0.2 µL was injected into the capillary liquid chromatography and the mobile phase employed was acetonitrile 98% with a flow rate of 3 μL min−1. Elution was also done isocratically in this process and detection was carried out at a wavelength of 254 nm. The mixture of simple phenolic compounds was successfully separated in less than 7 min. The asymmetry factor and resolution were 1.43–2.12 and 1.72–5.43 respectively. The number of the theoretical plates ranged from 213 to 7,857. Columns containing Si-TEG stationary phase also separate phenolic compounds, which consist of gallic acid, syringic acid, ferulic acid, and caffeic acid. A sample of 0.2 µL was injected into the capillary liquid chromatography and successfully separated the mixture in less than 12 min. The samples were eluted isocratically using a mixture of methanol and 50 mM phosphate buffer pH 2.5 (8:92) with a flow rate of 3 μL min−1. The phenolic acids compounds were detected at a wavelength of 280 nm. The chromatogram showed four separate peaks. Abstract Background Syringic acid (SA) is a high-value natural compound with diverse biological activities and wide applications, commonly found in fruits, vegetables, and herbs. SA is primarily produced through chemical synthesis, nonetheless, these chemical methods have many drawbacks, such as considerable equipment requirements, harsh reaction conditions, expensive catalysts, and numerous by-products. Therefore, in this study, a novel biotransformation route for SA production was designed and developed by using engineered whole cells. Results An O-methyltransferase from Desulfuromonas acetoxidans (DesAOMT), which preferentially catalyzes a methyl transfer reaction on the meta-hydroxyl group of catechol analogues, was identified. The whole cells expressing DesAOMT can transform gallic acid (GA) into SA when S-adenosyl methionine (SAM) is used as a methyl donor. We constructed a multi-enzyme cascade reaction in Escherichia coli, containing an endogenous shikimate kinase (AroL) and a chorismate lyase (UbiC), along with a p-hydroxybenzoate hydroxylase mutant (PobA**) from Pseudomonas fluorescens, and DesAOMT; SA was biosynthesized from shikimic acid (SHA) by using whole cells catalysis. The metabolic system of chassis cells also affected the efficiency of SA biosynthesis, blocking the chorismate metabolism pathway improved SA production. When the supply of the cofactor NADPH was optimized, the titer of SA reached 133 μM (26.2 mg/L). Conclusion Overall, we designed a multi-enzyme cascade in E. coli for SA biosynthesis by using resting or growing whole cells. This work identified an O-methyltransferase (DesAOMT), which can catalyze the methylation of GA to produce SA. The multi-enzyme cascade containing four enzymes expressed in an engineered E. coli for synthesizing of SA from SHA. The metabolic system of the strain and biotransformation conditions influenced catalytic efficiency. This study provides a new green route for SA biosynthesis. Graphical Abstract

In this study, a series of novel nanofibers based on gelatin (GA) loading with purple potato anthocyanin (PPA) and syringic acid (SA) were obtained by electrospinning technology. The effects of SA on mechanical properties, thermal stability, antioxidant capacity, and antimicrobial activity of the GA/PPA nanofibers were systematically characterized. The scanning electron microscopy observation results revealed a smooth surface on the nanofibers. The incorporation of SA enhanced the viscosity of the electrospun solutions, and it increased the average diameter of nanofibers from 0.17 μm to 0.28 μm. The tensile strength and thermal stability of the obtained nanofibers were enhanced with the addition of a suitable level of SA (1.5%, w/v), which strengthened the intermolecular interaction. The GA/PPA/SA nanofibers presented over 80% antioxidant capacity and strong antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus. Meanwhile, the sensitivity responses of nanofibers to NH3 revealed that GA/PPA/SA II nanofibers (1.5% w/v SA) presented good sensitivity of colorimetric behavior to ammonia. A pork spoilage test was performed to evaluate practical application of the nanofibers, and an obvious color change (dark purple to green) was observed. These results indicated GA/PPA/SA II nanofibers can be utilized as an active and intelligent multipurpose packaging material to preserve and track the freshness of pork. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: In the present study, the effect of microwave roasting on the total phenolic quantities, antioxidant activities, phenolic constituents, fatty acids and tocopherol amounts of the pistachio kernel and oil was revealed. The moisture, oil, total phenolic amounts and antioxidant capacity value of raw and roasted pistachio nuts were assessed as 31.13%, 28.58%, 34.79 mgGAE/100 g and 0.75%–3.18%, 56.91%, 18.80 mgGAE/100 g and 2.26%, respectively. The raw pistachio nut contains 1.90 gallic acid, 0.22 3,4‐dihydroxybenzoic acid, 0.87 (+)‐catechin, 0.15 1,2‐dihydroxybenzene, 0.15 rutin trihydrate, 0.16 resveratrol, 0.1 quercetin, 0.19 kaempferol and 0.24 mg/100 g isorhamnetin. In addition, microwave‐roasted nuts contained 0.75 gallic acid, 0.62 3,4‐dihydroxybenzoic acid, 0.83 (+)‐catechin, 0.47 1,2‐dihydroxybenzene, 0.21 syringic acid, 0.17 caffeic acid and 0.17 mg/100 g quercetin. The raw and roasted pistachio nut oils contained 74.12% and 71.16% oleic, 13.76% and 15.23% linoleic, 8.16% and 8.92% palmitic and 2.09% and 2.10% stearic acids, respectively. The oil samples of the raw and roasted kernels contained 8.15 and 0.00 α‐tocopherol, 63.78 and 7.60 β‐tocopherol, 8.72 and 7.40 ɣ‐tocopherol and 5.61 and 6.77 mg g−1 δ‐tocopherols, respectively. The total phenolic quantity of the pistachio kernel roasted by microwave decreased significantly. Phenolic compounds of the pistachio kernel showed partial differences depending on microwave heating. Differences were monitored in the fatty acid profiles of Pistachio kernel oils. β‐tocopherol quantity of the oil of the pistachio kernel heated by microwave significantly decreased. Chenopodium album L. (CAL) has many bioactive compounds and pharmacological activities. Fermentation is the preferred modification method of releasing target bioactive. We prepared two crude polysaccharides: SLC (the polysaccharide from the unfermented stem and leaves of CAL) and FSLC (the polysaccharide from the fermented stem and leaves of CAL). In vitro antioxidant and composition of SLC and FSLC were compared, and the effects of FSLC on antioxidant activity in the IPEC-J2 cells model and development-promoting activity in the zebrafish model were evaluated. The results revealed that FSLC possesses stronger DPPH, hydroxyl radical scavenging, and reducing power than SLC. The levels of total polysaccharide, polyphenol, and flavonoid, as well as the molar ratio of glucuronic acid increased in FSLC. Compared with SLC, the relative contents of protocatechuic acid, protocatechualdehyde, gentisic acid, vanillic acid, p-coumaric acid, quercetin, ferulic acid methyl ester, hispidulin, diosmetin, cinnamic acid, isorhamnetin, syringic acid and kaempferol in FSLC increased. In IPEC-J2 cells, antioxidant enzyme activities and GSH levels were significantly increased, while the MDA level was reduced by treatment with 0.25 mg/mL FSLC. In the zebrafish model, treatment with 25 ~ 300 μg/mL of FSLC had no harmful impact on the morphology and viability of embryos at 12 ~72 hpf. At 48 and 60 hpf, treatment with 100 ~ 300 μg/mL FSLC increased the hatching rate of embryos. At 72hpf, treatment with 100 ~ 300 μg/mL FSLC could relieve morphological abnormalities caused by LPS in zebrafish and improve the hatching rate of embryos. Together, these results provide useful information on the potential for applying polysaccharides from the stems and leaves of CAL as natural feed additives to exert its antioxidant and development-promoting functions. Incorporation of aminated starch (AS)-polyphenol conjugates to improve corn starch (CS) film properties were explored. AS-polyphenols (gallic acid (GA), syringic acid (SA) and vanillic acid (VA)) conjugates were synthesized by laccase and the grafting rates of GA, SA and VA were 36.59, 69.71 and 68.85%, respectively. Incorporation of the three conjugates (AS-GA, AS-SA and AS-VA) into the corn starch film improved a variety of properties of the CS film. The CS film without the conjugates was smooth and flat, while surface of the CS film with the conjugates became relatively rough and wrinkled and there were some small particles on the surface. Incorporation of the conjugates improved the thermal stability of the CS film during the polymer depolymerization phase. The thickness of the CS film with AS-VA conjugates was significantly larger than that of the CS film and the incorporation of the conjugates improved the hydrophobicity of the CS film. The tensile strength (TS) of both the CS films with AS-GA conjugates and AS-VA conjugates was significantly enhanced, while the TS of the CS film with AS-SA conjugates was significantly reduced. The incorporation of AS-polyphenol conjugates could improve the antioxidant ability and antibacterial ability of the CS film, especially the CS films containing AS-GA conjugates. The purpose of this study was to identify the saponin and phenolic components in root extracts of Saponaria officinalis, a widespread species, found in Cyprus. A total of six major saponins, including gypsogenin and gypsogenic acid derivatives, as well as saponariosides C, D, and E, were identified using UHPLC/Q-TOF-MS analysis, with gypsogenin derivatives being the most common saponins detected through quantitative analysis. A total of six phenolic compounds were also identified, including rutin, quercetin galactoside, syringic acid, apigenin, protocatechuic, and vanillic acid. In addition to their saponin and phenolic contents, the root extracts were prepared through different extraction methods, and their biological activity was assessed. All samples demonstrated antioxidant capacity, as well as antibacterial activity, against four bacterial strains (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, and Salmonella enteritidis), with the acetone extract presenting higher susceptibility. The evaluation of anticancer activity in A375 (human malignant melanoma), HeLa (human cervical epithelioid carcinoma), and HaCaT (healthy human keratinocytes) cell lines revealed that the acetone extract of S. officinalis extract demonstrated a significant inhibitory effect on the proliferation of A375 cells in a concentration-dependent manner. None of the extracts demonstrated anti-neurotoxic potential against Aβ25–35 cytotoxic peptides. The results of this study support previous findings that reveal that the Saponaria species are an excellent natural source of biologically active compounds with antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anticancer properties. Essential oil (EO) extraction is a widespread practice generating huge amounts of solid plant by-products a potential source of bioactive compounds, on the one hand, and a detrimental risk for the environment that needs to be carefully considered on the other hand. The present study aims to valorize Myrtus communis L. leaf by-products obtained following EO extraction using a steam distillation unit through the recovery of phenolic compounds and the evaluation of their biological activities. The total phenols, flavonoids, and proanthocyanidins contents of the ethanolic extract by-product were higher than the control (leaves without extraction of EO). Their amounts increased from 69.30 to 88.06 mg GAE/g for total phenols, from 36.31 to 70.97 mg QE for flavonoids and from 19.74 to 21.49 mg CE/g of extract for proanthocyanidins. The identification of phenolic compounds by high-performance liquid-chromatography equipped with a reversed-phase (RP-HPLC) system revealed that the by-product sample includes more gallic acid, catechin, syringic acid and luteolin 7-O-glucoside but less p-coumaric acid and kaempferol than the control. Moreover, the mid-infrared spectroscopy (MIR) showed the presence of benzene ring characteristic of phenolic compounds at 756 cm−1, esters of aromatic acids and stretching vibrations of polyphenols at 1141–1234 cm−1, C=C stretching present in phenolic acids such as coumaric acid and catechin at 1604 cm−1. The assessment of antioxidant activity revealed that the ABTS+• radical scavenging activity was significantly increased, whereas the DPPH• radical inhibition activity and the ferric reduction antioxidant power were significantly decreased. The results indicated, as well, that Myrtus communis L. leaf by-products maintained a considerable antibacterial activity depending on the tested bacterial strain. Additionally, the anti-α-amylase activity was higher for the Myrtus communis L. leaf by-product extract. Therefore, Myrtus communis L. leaf by-products of EO extraction offer phenolic compounds with significant biological activities, contributing to the sustainable development and the promotion of circular economy by the recovery of valuable inputs from plant by-products. Enhancing the production of biochemicals from lignocellulosic biomass is one potential way to decrease society's dependence on fossil fuels. Aromatic compounds obtained from plant biomass can be used as substrates for microbial production of dicarboxylic acids such as 2-pyrone-4,6-dicarboxylic acid (PDC) and cis,cis-muconic acid, which are building blocks for the manufacturing of polymer-based fibers and materials. In this study, we used an engineered strain of the bacterium Novosphingobium aromaticivorans to investigate how to increase PDC productivity in flow-through bioreactors receiving aqueous solutions of aromatics. At the best operational conditions tested, we achieved stable PDC production rates of 0.77 gPDC L−1 h−1 with p-hydroxybenzoic acid, 1.93 gPDC L−1 h−1 with syringic acid, and 1.53 gPDC L−1 h−1 with the products from alkaline pretreated poplar biomass. PDC titers in these reactors ranged from 7.7 to 15 g L−1 (42 to 80 mM) and were limited by aromatic solubility in the case of syringic acid, or by accumulation of protocatechuic acid from p-hydroxybenzoic acid when high aromatic loading rates were used. The use of high aromatic loading rates, hollow-fiber membranes to concentrate the microbial cells, and NH4OH for pH control were factors that contributed to this study achieving the highest PDC productivities reported to date. Overall, our findings demonstrate strategies that can be used to increase bioreactor productivity when aromatic substrates are delivered in aqueous form. In the present study, Heliotropium bacciferum Forssk. methanolic extract was tested for its antibacterial activities against Pectobacterium carotovorum, P. atrosepticum, Ralstonia solanacearum, and Streptomyces scabiei bacterial strains. The plant extract was also tested for its antifungal properties against strains of Fusarium oxysporum, Botrytis cinerea, and Rhizoctonia solani. The potent antibacterial activities were recorded against R. solanacearum after treatment with the extract at a concentration of 1000 μg/mL with an inhibition zone of 9.67 ±0.57 mm. The methanolic extract also showed promising antifungal effects against B. cinerea and F. oxysporum, with fungal growth inhibition percentages of 86.22 ±0.33% and 82.00 ±0.55%, respectively, which were higher than the standard antifungal drug. The plant extract’s HPLC analysis identified 12 phenolic compounds and 6 flavonoid compounds, with HPLC peaks matching the used standards. Gallic acid, chlorogenic acid, coffeic acid, ellagic acid, coumaric acid, syringic acid, methyl gallate, ferulic acid, vanillin, pyrocatechol, and cinnamic acid were the phenolic compounds that were identified. The flavonoid compounds found in the extracts were daidzein, naringenin, quercetin, kaempferol, hesperetin, apigenin, and rutin, arranged from high to low abundance. Furthermore, according to the GC-MS analysis, the most abundant compounds detected in the plant extract were n-hexadecanoic acid, 9,12-octadecadienoic acid (z,z), á-sitosterol, betulin, phorbol, cis-13-octadecenoic acid, and octadecanoic acid. These compounds in HPLC and GC-MS analyses were proven to have antibacterial as well as antifungal properties. Based on the obtained antimicrobial results, H. bacciferum methanolic extracts could be recommended as a promising antibacterial and antifungal agent, as well as a safe alternative to many antimicrobial pesticides for the environment and human health. Clematis Florida (CF) is a folk medicinal herb in the southeast of China, which is traditionally used for treating osteoarticular diseases. However, the mechanism of its action remains unclear. The present study used network pharmacology and experimental validation to explore the mechanism of CF in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) identified 50 main compounds of CF; then, their targets were obtained from TCMSP, ETCM, ITCM, and SwissTargetPrediction databases. RA disease-related targets were obtained from DisGeNET, OMIM, and GeneCards databases, and 99 overlapped targets were obtained using a Venn diagram. The protein–protein interaction network (PPI), the compound–target network (CT), and the compound–potential target genes–signaling pathways network (CPS) were constructed and analyzed. The results showed that the core compounds were screened as oleanolic acid, oleic acid, ferulic acid, caffeic acid, and syringic acid. The core therapeutic targets were predicted via network pharmacology analysis as PTGS2 (COX-2), MAPK1, NF-κB1, TNF, and RELA, which belong to the MAPK signaling pathway and NF-κB signaling pathway. The animal experiments indicated that topical application of CF showed significant anti-inflammatory activity in a mouse model of xylene-induced ear edema and had strong analgesic effect on acetic acid-induced writhing. Furthermore, in the rat model of adjuvant arthritis (AA), topical administration of CF was able to alleviate toe swelling and ameliorate joint damage. The elevated serum content levels of IL-6, COX-2, TNF-α, IL-1β, and RF caused by adjuvant arthritis were reduced by CF treatment. HERBAL plants are known to contain a wide number of bioactive compounds that are considered as potential sources of natural biological activities. Therefore, this study aims to compare and analyze the chemical composition, the polyphenolic compounds, and the biological activities of ethanolic extracts of Saussurea costus (SCE) and Withania somnifera (WSE). The chemical composition and the polyphenolic compounds of the ethanolic SCE and WSE were elucidated. Each of their antioxidant activity, antifungal activity, and anti-aflatoxigenic activities were evaluated. The obtained data indicated that SC contained higher levels of carbohydrates and protein than WS, while higher levels of ash, moisture, and oil were detected in WS. Although SCE contained higher levels of total phenolic and flavonoid contents and antioxidant activity, the high content and diversity of some polyphenolic compounds such as Gallic acid, Coffeic acid, Syringic acid, Pyro catechol, Rutin, Vanillin, Kaempferol and Cinnamic acid detected in WSE making it more efficient as an antifungal and anti-aflatoxigenic agent than SCE. It can be concluded that both SCE and WSE were potential sources of polyphenolic compounds with antioxidants, antifungal and anti-aflatoxigenic properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to investigate the effects of elicitors on Vanda coerulea Griff. Ex Lindl. protocorms to enhance bioactive compound production and evaluate their biological activities relevant to cosmeceutical applications. The protocorms were developed from the callus treated with different elicitors, including 6-benzylaminopurine (BA), methyl jasmonate (MeJA), and chitosan. Both the adult plant and protocorms were extracted by maceration in 80% methanol and investigated for their chemical compositions using high-performance liquid chromatography. The extracts were evaluated for antioxidant, anti-collagenase, anti-elastase, and anti-tyrosinase activities. In addition, anti-inflammatory properties were assessed using a real-time polymerase chain reaction. The irritation potency was evaluated using the hen's egg test-chorioallantoic membrane test. The findings revealed that protocorms treated with BA and chitosan developed a greener color, while those treated with MeJA exhibited a distinct darker coloration. Elicitation with BA and chitosan resulted in protocorms with comparable or higher levels of syringic acid, rutin, and quercin compared with the adult plant, with rutin being the most prominent identified compound. Furthermore, rutin was reported as the compound responsible for all biological activities. The chitosan-treated protocorm extract exhibited potent inhibition against oxidation, collagenase, elastase, tyrosinase, and inflammatory cytokines, along with a nonirritating effect, making it a promising candidate for cosmeceutical applications. In this study, we investigated the effects of preharvest oxalic acid (2.5 mM (OA1) and 5 mM (OA2)) and salicylic acid (0.5 mM (SA1) and 1 mM (SA2)) treatments on the storage and quality of blackberry cv. Chester. We applied salicylic acid and oxalic acid to the plants seven and fourteen days before harvest and recorded the physiological, physicochemical, and external appearance characteristics of the fruits during the cold storage period (nine days). The results showed that the treatments decreased ethylene production by 29.5% (SA1) at harvest and by 28.5% (SA2) at the end of the storage period. In addition, the respiration rate was reduced between 13.0% (OA2) and 28.0% (SA2) compared to the control. Although fruit weigh loss increased as storage extended, the highest losses were observed in control with 1.35%. Titratable acidity decreased from harvest (0.46%) to the end of storage (0.39%) in the control, whereas it ranged from 0.52% (SA1) to 0.62% (OA1) in the treatment groups. Malic acid and syringic acid were the dominant organic acid and phenolic, respectively, and although their content decreased continuously in the control group, no loss was observed in the treated groups after the sixth day. These effects were positively reflected in the external appearance of the fruits, total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, and properties related to antioxidant activity. As a result of the cumulative evaluation of all parameters, it can be suggested that Chester fruits can be stored for nine days in marketable quality with the SA2 applications. Among oxalic acid concentrations, 2.5 mM can be recommended for phytochemical accumulation at harvest and short‐term storage of three days. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study verified the in vitro activity of red cabbage and beetroot against the formation of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) and their relationship with the biomolecules' content. Fermentation of cabbage increased the total phenolic (~10%) and flavonoid contents (~14%), whereas decreased total phenolics/flavonoids in beetroot. Fermented cabbage exhibited higher ability against AGEs, i.e., 17% in the bovine serum albumin–methylglyoxal (BSA-MGO) model and 25% in the BSA–glucose model, while beetroot exhibited 23% and 18%, respectively. The major compounds of cabbage products were cyanidin 3-(sinapoyl)(sinapoyl)-diglucoside-5-glucoside, sinapic acid, and epicatechin. Syringic acid and epicatechin were predominantly present in fermented beetroot. 2,17-bidecarboxy- and 2,15,17-tridecarboxy-betanin were the major betalains. The present work aimed to optimize the recovery of antioxidative phenolic compounds from steam treated and untreated rice biomass (rice bran and rice straw) by the influence of lignocellulolytic enzymes of Burkholderia sp SMB1. The optimization of extraction was carried out by response surface methodology targeting to maximize phenolic release. These compounds were separated from the extracts using charcoal and un-utilized hydrolysed rice bran wastes and analysed for antioxidant properties. 10% (w/v) rice biomass with 60 mg of enzyme loadings (mg of protein in crude enzyme extract) at 40 °C, pH 7 for 30 min. Ferulic acid, gallic acid, coumaric acid, syringic acid, caffeic acid, epicatechin and kaemferol were identified by HPLC in both rice biomass extracts. Maximum total phenolics (83.35 mg GAE/100 g), total flavonoid content (16.89 mg/100 g QE), total tannin content (78.69 mg/100 g TAE) and antioxidant properties viz., 87.68% for ABTS, 77.11% for DPPH and 0.82 absorbance for FRAP was obtained for steam treated rice bran followed by rice straw. This work signifies the biomass transformation into phenolics possessing antioxidant nature under simple extraction process. Summary: In this study, the effect of microwave on oil contents, bioactive components, antioxidant activity, polyphenols, tocopherols, fatty acid compositions and nutrients of purslane seeds was investigated. The moisture amount of the purslane seeds decreased significantly, while the oil and bioactive properties of the seeds increased compared to the control. Raw (control) and purslane seeds roasted in microwave contained 24.72 and 26.27 mg/100 g gallic acid, 34.12 and 38.30 mg/100 g 3,4‐dihydroxybenzoic acid, 111.57 and 118.55 mg/100 g catechin, 8.70 and 3.46 caffeic acid, 5.95 and 5.09 mg/100 g syringic acid, 18.73 and 8.34 mg/100 g rutin and 3.07 and 2.26 mg/100 g quercetin, respectively. Stearic, linoleic, arachidic, linolenic, behenic and erucic acid results of the oils of raw and purslane seeds roasted in microwave were partially increased compared to raw seed oil. The applied heat treatment had a positive effect on the tocopherol results of the purslane seed oils, and the tocopherol contents of the oils obtained from the roasted seeds increased compared to the control. Marrubium vulgare (Lamiaceae) is a plant which has long been known and used in traditional medicine for various purposes. However, few recent studies have documented its chemical composition and biological properties. The present study investigated the phytochemical composition of horehound, as well as its protective, antioxidant, and antimicrobial potential. GC-MS analysis revealed that the major components of horehound essential oil are E-caryophyllene (35.7%), germacrene D (25.2%), and bicyclogermacrene (10.6%). The biological activity of horehound hydroethanolic herb extract derives from multiple chemical compounds, including polyphenols (55.72 mg/mL), flavonoids (11.01 mg/mL), phenolic acids (4.33 mg/mL), and tannins (4.46 mg/mL). Chromatographic analyses of the extract identified 12 phenolic compounds, of which ferulic acid, catechin, quercetin, protocatechuic acid, rutin, and syringic acid (35.42, 24.69, 20.65, 18.70, 14.46, and 12.69 mg/mL, respectively) were the main constituents. Its DPPH radical scavenging ability was 68.29%, while its antioxidant properties, determined by the FRAP method, were at the level of 1.22 mmol/L. Moreover, M. vulgare extract decreased the level of intracellular reactive oxygen species in the fibroblasts and keratinocytes in vitro, achieving the strongest antioxidant effect at a concentration of 2.5% in the case of both types of skin cells. Extracts from the horehound herb showed significant antimicrobial and anti-biofilm activity, confirming the plant's potential in therapeutic applications against various microbial pathogens (gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and fungi). The research results demonstrate the protective effect of horehound extract on the viability of both fibroblasts and keratinocytes in vitro. To sum up, M. vulgare, as a valuable natural material with high preventive and therapeutic effectiveness, is a potential candidate for new applications in the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries. This study investigated preheated (25–100°C) black soybean protein isolate (BSPI) conjugated with syringic acid (SA) (25 and 50 µmol/g protein) under alkaline conditions, focusing on the structure, functional properties, and storage stability. The results revealed that the SA binding equivalent and binding rate on BSPI increased continuously as the preheat temperature increased. Additionally, preheating positively impacted the surface hydrophobicity (H0) of BSPI, with further enhancement observed upon SA binding. Preheating and SA binding altered the secondary and tertiary structure of BSPI, resulting in protein unfolding and increased molecular flexibility. The improvement in BSPI functional properties was closely associated with both preheating temperature and SA binding. Specifically, preheating decreased the solubility of BSPI but enhanced the emulsifying activity index (EAI) and foaming capacity (FC) of BSPI. Conversely, SA binding increased the solubility of BSPI with an accompanying increase in EAI, FC, foaming stability, and antioxidant activity. Notably, the BSPI100‐SA50 exhibited the most significant improvement in functional properties, particularly in solubility, emulsifying, and foaming attributes. Moreover, the BSPI‐SA conjugates demonstrated good stability of SA during storage, which positively correlated with the preheating temperature. This study proposes a novel BSPI‐SA conjugate with enhanced essential functional properties, underscoring the potential of preheated BSPI‐SA conjugates to improve SA storage stability. Practical Application: Preheated BSPI‐SA conjugates can be used as functional ingredients in food or health products. Infrared heating (IRH) at 140, 160, and 180°C for varying durations (5, 10, and 15 min) was employed for improving the niger (Guizotia abyssinica) seed oil (NSO) quality for diverse food applications. The study explored changes in phenolic profile, oxidative stability index (OSI), tocopherols, phytosterols, fatty acid profiles, and physicochemical attributes of NSO. Upon IRH at 180°C for 10 min, the oil yield, total phenolic, and flavonoid contents increased from 33.09% to 40.56%, 6.67 to 173.62 mg GAE/kg, and 24.76 to 120.64 mg QE/kg, respectively. The viscosity, chlorophylls, carotenoids, radical scavenging activity, OSI, caffeic, protocatechuic, vanillic, and syringic acids were highest upon IRH at 180°C for 15 min. The tocopherols and phytosterols initially augmented while decremented upon raising IRH conditions. The infrared spectra indicated no adverse impact of IRH on NSO quality. The research conducted so far on the chemical mechanisms of trees' defence against foliophages has not uncovered the chemical compounds biosynthesized by plants that are essential for these mechanisms. The objective of this study was to identify a chemical indicator for the presence of the pine beauty moth in Pinus sylvestris stands. Fresh needled shoots were collected from the crowns of pine trees in stands where the pine beauty moth tends to occur in large numbers, as well as from control stands. Total phenolic contents, total flavonoids contents, total chlorophyll content, terpene compounds, phenolic compound concentration, LMWOAs, sugar content, and colour analysis were conducted. Chlorophyll content, the presence of Panolis flammea in forest stands, and the colour of pine needles were discovered to be related. Variable L* correlated positively with the concentrations of chlorophyll a and b. In pine needles that were not attacked by the pine beauty moth, significantly higher concentrations of 4‐hydroxybenzoic acid, salicylic acid, chlorogenic acid, syringic acid, quercitin, and rutin were found, with the first compound having the most significant effect (4‐hydroxybenzoic acid). This study thoroughly examined the proximate composition, bioactive composition, and in vitro biological activities of three different cultivars of papaya leaf extracts (PLEs) as potential functional ingredients and nutraceuticals. The dark green leaves of three papaya cultivars, Khaek Dam (KD), Holland (H), and Thai Local (L), were used in this study. The protein content of the leaves ranged from 25.96 to 32.18%, the fat content ranged from 7.34 to 11.66%, the carbohydrate content ranged from 5.80 to 17.91%, the moisture content ranged from 6.02 to 6.49%, the ash content ranged from 11.23 to 12.40%, and the fiber content ranged from 23.24 to 38.48%. The L cultivar possessed significantly higher protein and carbohydrate contents, whereas the H cultivar had the highest ash content (p < 0.05). The total phenolic content (TPC) ranged from 113.94 to 173.69 mg GAE/g extract, with the KD cultivar having the highest TPC (p < 0.05). Several metabolic compounds such as phenolic compounds (particularly kaempferol, isorhamnetin, quercetin, ferulic acid, isoferulic acid, salicylic acid, sinapic acid, syringic acid, and vanillin), terpenoids (such as eucalyptol), glycosides, and indole were identified. The PLE from the KD cultivar had the highest levels of DPPH• inhibition, metal chelation, reducing power, and antidiabetic activity (p < 0.05), suggesting superior biological activity. All three PLEs reduced the proliferation of RAW 264.7 cells in a dose-dependent manner with low nitric oxide formation. Amaç: Prostat kanseri (PC), dünya çapında erkeklerde kanserden ölümlerin en yaygın nedenlerinden biridir ve PC'yi tedavi etmek için yeni ilaçlar halen geliştirilmektedir. Şırınga asidi (SA), çeşitli tümörlerde antiinflamatuar ve metabolik düzenleyici etkiler ve antitümör aktiviteleri sergileyen bir polifenolik bileşiktir. Bu çalışma, SA'nın DU-145 hücreleri üzerindeki antiproliferatif ve antitümör aktivitelerini araştırmayı amaçladı. Yöntemler: SA'nın antiproliferatif etkisini belirlemek için MTT, antioksidan-oksidan etkilerini belirlemek için SOD-MDA analizleri kullanıldı. Bulgular: SA, in vitro olarak DU-145 hücre proliferasyonunu önemli ölçüde baskıladı. Ayrıca SOD düzeylerini düşürürken, MDA düzeylerinde ise ciddi bir artışa neden olmuştur.
