1. Photoneutron cross section measurements on $^{208}$Pb in the Giant Dipole Resonance region

Abstract

Photoneutron reactions on $^{208}$Pb in the Giant Dipole Resonance energy region have been investigated at the $\gamma$-ray beam line of the NewSUBARU facility in Japan. The measurements made use of quasi-monochromatic laser Compton backscattering $\gamma$-ray beams in a broad energy range, from the neutron threshold up to 38 MeV, and of a flat-efficiency moderated $^3$He neutron detection system along with associated neutron-multiplicity sorting methods. We report absolute cross sections and mean photoneutron energies for the $^{208}$Pb$(\gamma,\,inX)$ reactions with $i$~=~1 to 4. The fine structure present in the $^{208}$Pb$(\gamma,\,n)$ cross sections at incident energies lower than 13~MeV has been observed. The photoabsorption cross section has been obtained as the sum of the $(\gamma,\,inX)$ reaction cross sections. By reproducing the measured ring-ratio values at excitation energies below the two neutron separation energy, we were able to extract estimations on the $^{208}$Pb$(\gamma,\,n)$ photoneutron energy spectra and on the partial photoneutron cross sections for leaving the residual $^{207}$Pb in its ground and first two excited states. The present results are compared with data from the literature and statistical model calculations.

Abstract

The tetraneutron has been drawing the attention of the nuclear physics community for decades, but a firm conclusion on its existence and properties is still far from being reached despite many experimental and theoretical efforts. Abstract

Photoneutron cross sections were measured for $^{58}$Ni, $^{60}$Ni, $^{61}$Ni, and $^{64}$Ni at energies between the one-neutron and two-neutron thresholds using quasi-monochromatic $\gamma$-ray beams produced in laser Compton-scattering at the NewSUBARU synchrotron radiation facility. The new photoneutron data are used to extract the $\gamma$-ray strength function above the neutron threshold complementing the information obtained by the Oslo method below the threshold. We discuss radiative neutron capture cross sections and the Maxwellian-averaged cross sections for Ni isotopes including $^{63}$Ni, a branching point nucleus along the weak s-process path. The cross sections are calculated with the experimentally constrained $\gamma$-ray strength functions from the Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov plus quasi-particle-random phase approximation based on the Gogny D1M interaction for both $E1$ and $M1$ components and supplemented with the $M1$ upbend., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, re-submitted to PRC

Abstract

Nuclear level densities and $\gamma$-ray strength functions have been extracted for $^{59, 60}\rm{Ni}$, using the Oslo method on data sets from the $^{60}$Ni($^{3}$He,$^{3}$He$^{\prime}\gamma$)$^{60}$Ni and $^{60}$Ni($^{3}$He,$\alpha\gamma$)$^{59}$Ni reactions. Above the neutron separation energy, S$_n$, we have measured the $\gamma$-ray strength functions for $^{61}$Ni and $^{60}$Ni in photoneutron experiments. The low-energy part of the $^{59,60}$Ni $\gamma$-ray strength functions show an increase for decreasing $\gamma$ energies. The experimental $\gamma$-ray strength functions are compared with $M1$ $\gamma$-ray strength functions calculated within the shell model. The $E1$ $\gamma$-ray strength function of $^{60}$Ni has been calculated using the QTBA framework. The QTBA calculations describe the data above $E_{\gamma}\approx$ 7 MeV, while the shell-model calculations agree qualitatively with the low energy part of the $\gamma$-ray strength function. Hence, we give a plausible explanation of the observed shape of the $\gamma$-decay strength.

Abstract

With the experimental station STELLA (STELlar LAboratory) we will measure fusion cross sections of astrophysical relevance making use of the coincident detection of charged particles and gamma rays for background reduction. For the measurement of gamma rays from the de-excitation of fusion products a compact array of 36 UK FATIMA LaBr₃ detectors is designed based on efficiency studies with Geant4. The photo peak efficiency in the region of interest compares to other gamma detection systems used in this field. The features of the internal decay of ¹³⁸La is used in a background study to obtain an online calibration of the gamma detectors. Background data are fit to the Monte Carlo model of the self activity assuming crude exponential behavior of external background. Accuracy in the region of interest is of the order of some keV in this first study.

Abstract

The tetraneutron has attracted the attention of nuclear physicists during the past decades, but there is still no unambiguous confirmation of its existence or non-existence. A new experiment based on ⁸He(p,2p)⁷H{t+⁴ n} reaction, with direct detection of the four neutrons, has been carried out at RIBF, which can hopefully help to draw a definite conclusion on the tetraneutron system.

Abstract

The experimental data collected during the S515 experiment performed by the R3B collaboration at GSI/FAIR represent a great opportunity to investigate nucleon knockout reactions of exotic nuclei in the region of Sn using complete kinematics measurements. These cross sections can be used in the future to investigate the quenching in the knockout of the minority species (neutrons or protons) in nuclei far from stability. Some of the arguments put forward are the underestimation of the knockout of deeply bound nucleons, final state interactions or the role of short-range correlations (SRC). Recently, several works based on inclusive measurements have shown that these SRCs could reduce the single nucleon knockout cross sections by around 50%, depending on the neutron excess (N/Z) of the initial projectile. The S515 data can help us to go further in this investigation because it allows to correlate the knockout cross sections of one, two or more nucleons with the number of protons and neutrons emitted from the target and which can be detected by the CALIFA and NeuLAND detectors, respectively, and perform complete kinematical studies on the nature of the event (SRC, evaporation, emission of clusters, final-state interactions...). Here the results obtained for the charge distribution of reaction residues are presented, which is one of the first steps of the still on-going analysis.

Abstract

The tetraneutron has attracted the attention of nuclear physicists during the past decades, but there is still no unambiguous confirmation of its existence or non-existence. A new experiment based on 8He(p,2p)7H{t+4 n} reaction, with direct detection of the four neutrons, has been carried out at RIBF, which can hopefully help to draw a definite conclusion on the tetraneutron system.

Abstract

Spectroscopic factors of neutron-hole and proton-hole states in 131Sn and 131In, respectively, were measured using one-nucleon removal reactions from doubly magic 132Sn at relativistic energies. For 131In, a 2910(50)-keV γ ray was observed for the first time and tentatively assigned to a decay from a 5=2− state at 3275(50) keV to the known 1=2− level at 365 keV. The spectroscopic factors determined for this new excited state and three other single-hole states provide first evidence for a strong fragmentation of singlehole strength in 131Sn and 131In. Abstract

Background: The term Pygmy Dipole Resonance (PDR) denotes electric dipole excitations below and around the neutron separation threshold. It may be important, e.g., for the nucleosynthesis of heavy nuclei or the symmetry energy in the Equation of State (EoS). For a deeper understanding of the PDR systematic studies are essential. Purpose: The tin isotopic chain is a well-suited candidate to investigate the systematics of the PDR and the (g,g') reactions on 112,116,120,124Sn have already been measured in experiments using bremsstrahlung. It was claimed that the extracted electric dipole transition strengths of these isotopes increase with increasing neutron-to-proton ratio with the exception of 120 Sn. Furthermore, previous results from elastic photon scattering experiments on 120Sn are in disagreement with corresponding (p,p') Coulomb excitation data. To examine this discrepancy an additional high-sensitivity bremsstrahlung experiment on 120Sn was performed. Method: The Nuclear Resonance Fluorescence (NRF) method is used which bases on real photon scattering. The bremsstrahlung experiment presented in this work was performed with a maximum energy of E = 9.5 MeV at the gELBE facility at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR). Besides a state-to-state analysis, the quasi-continuum was investigated as well. Results: Above Ex = 4 MeV 236 dipole transitions were clearly identified and 168 of those were observed for the first time. Assuming that all analyzed transitions have electric dipole character the summed electric dipole strength equals B(E1) = 374(35) e2 fm2 (0.54(5) % of the TRK sum rule) for transitions from 4 MeV to Sn = 9.1 MeV. This is an enhancement of a factor 2.3 compared to the previously published 120Sn(g,g') results. Especially, the observation of many weaker transitions in the state-to-state analysis lead to this increase. The photo-absorption cross sections deduced from the quasi-continuum analysis are about two times higher than the results of the (p,p') experiment. Conclusion: The newly extracted summed B(E1) value of the state-to-state analysis is larger than those of 112,116Sn and smaller than that of 124 Sn. The difference between the present (g,g') data and the results of the inelastic proton scattering experiment above 6.3 MeV is still striking. The deviation may be explained by unobserved decay branchings and unresolved strength. Up to now, there is no explanation for the discrepancy between the extracted photo-absorption cross sections of the analysis of the quasi-continuum and the (p,p') measurement. Additional experiments may shed light on this deviation.

Abstract

Background: The term Pygmy Dipole Resonance (PDR) denotes an accumulation of electric dipole excitations below and around the neutron separation threshold. It may be important, e.g., for the nucleosynthesis of heavy nuclei or the symmetry energy in the Equation of State (EoS). For a deeper understanding of the PDR, systematic studies are essential. Purpose: The tin isotopic chain is a well-suited candidate to investigate the systematics of the PDR, and the (gamma, gamma') reactions on Sn-112,Sn-116,Sn-120,Sn-124 have already been measured in experiments using bremsstrahlung. It was claimed that the extracted electric dipole transition strengths of these isotopes increase with increasing neutron-to-proton ratio with the exception of Sn-120. Furthermore, previous results from elastic photon scattering experiments on Sn-120 are in disagreement with corresponding (p, p') Coulomb excitation data. To examine this discrepancy an additional high-sensitivity bremsstrahlung experiment on Sn-120 was performed. Method: The Nuclear Resonance Fluorescence (NRF) method is used, which is based on the scattering of real photons. The bremsstrahlung experiment presented in this work was performed with a maximum energy of E-gamma,E-max = 9.5 MeV at the gamma ELBE facility at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR). Besides a state-to-state analysis, the quasicontinuum was investigated as well. Results: Above E-x = 4 MeV 228 dipole transitions were clearly identified; 163 were observed for the first time. Assuming that all identified dipole transitions have electric dipole character the summed electric dipole strength equals Sigma B(E1)up arrow=369(49) x 10(-3) e(2)fm(2) [which amounts to 0.58(8)% of the Thomas-Reiche-Kuhn sum rule] for transitions from 4 MeV to S-n = 9.1 MeV. This is an enhancement of a factor 2.3 compared to the previously published Sn-120(gamma, gamma') results. Abstract

The tetraneutron has attracted the attention of nuclear physicists during the past decades, but there is still no unambiguous confirmation of its existence or nonexistence. A new experiment based on 8 He(p,2p)7H{t+4n} reaction, with direct detection of the four neutrons, has been carried out at RIBF, which can hopefully help to draw a definite conclusion on the tetraneutron system.

Abstract

Nuclear level densities and $��$-ray strength functions have been extracted for $^{59, 60}\rm{Ni}$, using the Oslo method on data sets from the $^{60}$Ni($^{3}$He,$^{3}$He$^{\prime}��$)$^{60}$Ni and $^{60}$Ni($^{3}$He,$����$)$^{59}$Ni reactions. Above the neutron separation energy, S$_n$, we have measured the $��$-ray strength functions for $^{61}$Ni and $^{60}$Ni in photoneutron experiments. The low-energy part of the $^{59,60}$Ni $��$-ray strength functions show an increase for decreasing $��$ energies. The experimental $��$-ray strength functions are compared with $M1$ $��$-ray strength functions calculated within the shell model. The $E1$ $��$-ray strength function of $^{60}$Ni has been calculated using the QTBA framework. The QTBA calculations describe the data above $E_��\approx$ 7 MeV, while the shell-model calculations agree qualitatively with the low energy part of the $��$-ray strength function. Hence, we give a plausible explanation of the observed shape of the $��$-decay strength.

The new photoneutron data are used to extract the $\gamma$-ray strength function above the neutron threshold complementing the information obtained by the Oslo method below the threshold. We discuss radiative neutron capture cross sections and the Maxwellian-averaged cross sections for Ni isotopes including $^{63}$Ni, a branching point nucleus along the weak s-process path. The PHOENIX (PHOto-Excitation and Neutron emIssion cross [X] sections) Collaboration has been established for the IAEA-CRP in the γ-ray beam line GACKO (GAmma Collaboration hutch of KOnan university) of the NewSUBARU synchrotron radiation facility in Japan. The collaboration provides (; xn) cross-section data to resolve the long-standing discrepancy between the Livermore and Saclay data on partial photoneutron cross sections. For the IAEA-CRP, a flat-efficiency neutron detector (FED) for (γxn) cross-section measurements was developed. The detector consists of ³He counters arranged in three concentric rings embedded in a polyethylene moderator. Due to the fact that the efficiency of the detector is constant for the neutron energies up to several MeV, it is possible to determine the partial photoneutron reactions cross sections using direct neutron-multiplicity sorting technique. The paper gives details of the experimental setup and data analysis, and preliminary results of total neutron-production cross sections in monochromatic approximation for 165Ho nucleus. Abstract

Dependence of isomeric ratios on the energy of gammas in the reaction 130Te(γ,n)129m,gTe gTe in the dipole resonance energie range have been investigated. Obtained experimental results have been compared with TALYS-1.0 calculations., В області енергій гігантського дипольного резонансу досліджено залежність ізомерних відношень виходів від енергії гамма-квантів в реакції 130Te(γ,n)129m,gTe. Одержані експериментальні результати порівнюються з розрахунками проведеними за допомогою програмного пакета TALYS-1.0., В области энергий гигантского дипольного резонанса исследовано зависимость изомерных отношений выходов от энергии гамма-квантов в реакции 130Te(γ,n)129m,gTe. Полученные экспериментальные результаты сравниваются с расчетами, проведёнными с помощью программного пакета TALYS-1.0.

Abstract

Dependence of isomeric ratios on the energy of gammas in the reaction 130Te(γ,n)129m,gTe gTe in the dipole resonance energie range have been investigated. Obtained experimental results have been compared with TALYS-1.0 calculations., В области энергий гигантского дипольного резонанса исследовано зависимость изомерных отношений выходов от энергии гамма-квантов в реакции 130Te(γ,n)129m,gTe. Полученные экспериментальные результаты сравниваются с расчетами, проведёнными с помощью программного пакета TALYS-1.0., В області енергій гігантського дипольного резонансу досліджено залежність ізомерних відношень виходів від енергії гамма-квантів в реакції 130Te(γ,n)129m,gTe. Одержані експериментальні результати порівнюються з розрахунками проведеними за допомогою програмного пакета TALYS-1.0.

Abstract

Isomeric yields ratios and energy differential cross-section of metastable state excitation in the reaction has been studied in the 10-22MeV end-point energy range of bremsstrahlung beams. Experimental data are compared with Hauser-Feshbach calculations performed with TALYS-1.6 statistical model code. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
