Search

There are about a dozen symbiotic stars known to produce high-velocity jets during outbursts. MWC 560 (V694 Mon) is a symbiotic star that seems to show a permanent jet. After showing an unexpected brightening in 2018 November, it has continued to brighten until 2021 and is currently in the brightest state ever. We have been conducting long-term high-dispersion spectroscopic monitoring of this object since 2016 March. An emission wing with vFWHM ≈ 700 km s−1 in the hydrogen Balmer line at an unexpected brightening event in 2018 was reported by Ando et al. (2021, PASJ, 73, L1). In subsequent continuous observations, this emission wing was no longer seen on 2019 February 6. The absorption lines seen in the hydrogen Balmer lines are gradually deepening and spreading to the slower side of the velocity, and the outflow velocity is becoming slower. The expanding component generated by the outburst was initially observed in the emission wing just after the 2018 outburst, got gradually cooler, and was observed in the absorption line after 2019.

We present photometric and spectral observations of the symbiotic star ZZ CMi. We detect intranight variability - flickering and smooth variations in U band. The amplitude of the flickering is about 0.10-0.20 mag in U band. In the B band the variability is lower, with amplitude less than 0.03 mag. We also detect variability in the H-alpha and H-beta emission lines, and find an indication for outflow with velocity of about 120-150 km/s. The results indicate that ZZ CMi is an accretion powered symbiotic containing an M4-M6 III cool component with an white dwarf resembling recurrent novae and jet-ejecting symbiotic stars. MWC 560 (V694 Mon) is classified as a symbiotic binary consisting of a white dwarf and an M5III red giant. In this object, a very- high-speed component, thought to be a jet, has been reported in the hydrogen Balmer line. We have been conducting long-term spectroscopic monitoring since the brightening in 2016 February. An irregular rebrightening was reported by Goranskij et al. (2018, Astronomer’s Telegram, 12227), who also showed that the high-velocity absorption component was not seen on 2018 November 16. Our low-resolution spectroscopic observations showed no high-velocity absorption component on 2018 November 14, and wide emission lines in Balmer line region (Hα, Hβ). However, high-resolution spectroscopy revealed the presence of slow, weak absorbing components and an emission wing on 2018 December 25. MWC 560 began to brighten in 2018 November, and it is gradually brightening as of 2020 April 14. For the absorption component, we propose a shell expansion of a classical symbiotic nova that occurred in 2016. During the 2018 brightening a new emission wing with vFWHM ≈ 700 km s−1 was confirmed, which could be triggered by disk instability like a dwarf nova. We performed high-resolution optical spectroscopy and X-ray observations of the recently identified Mira-type symbiotic star EF Aql. Based on high-resolution optical spectroscopy obtained with SALT, we determine the temperature ($\sim $55 000 K) and the luminosity ($\sim$ 5.3 $L_\odot$) of the hot component in the system. The heliocentric radial velocities of the emission lines in the spectra reveal possible stratification of the chemical elements. We also estimate the mass-loss rate of the Mira donor star. Our Swift observation did not detect EF Aql in X-rays. The upper limit of the X-ray observations is 10$^{-12}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, which means that EF Aql is consistent with the faintest X-ray systems detected so far. Otherwise we detected it with the UVOT instrument with an average UVM2 magnitude of 14.05. During the exposure, EF Aql became approximately 0.2 UVM2 magnitudes fainter. The periodogram analysis of the V-band data reveals an improved period of 320.4$\pm$0.3 d caused by the pulsations of the Mira-type donor star. We performed simultaneous observations of the H2O 6(1,6) - 5(2,3) (22.235080 GHz) and SiO v= 1, 2, J = 1 - 0, SiO v = 1, J = 2 - 1, 3 - 2 (43.122080, 42.820587, 86.243442, and 129.363359 GHz) masers towards the suspected D-type symbiotic star, V627 Cas, using the Korean VLBI Network. Here, we present astrometrically registered maps of the H2O and SiO v = 1, 2, J = 1 - 0, SiO v = 1, J = 2 - 1 masers for five epochs from January 2016 to June 2018. Distributions of the SiO maser spots do not show clear ring-like structures, and those of the H2O maser are biased towards the north-north-west to west with respect to the SiO maser features according to observational epochs. These asymmetric distributions of H2O and SiO masers are discussed based on two scenarios of a bipolar outflow and the presence of the hot companion, a white dwarf, in V627 Cas. We carried out ring fitting of SiO v = 1, and v = 2 masers and estimated the expected position of the cool red giant. The ring radii of the SiO v = 1 maser are slightly larger than those of the SiO v = 2 maser, as previously known. We present the results of our spectroscopic observations for the classical symbiotic star V1413 Aql in 20122017. In this period the system was in both active and rare (for it) quiescent states. In 2012 the optical spectrum was dominated by the radiation from the erupted hot component of spectral type F47 III. In 2017 the system passed to a quiescent state that lasted at least three months. In this period lines of ions with high ionization potentials, such as He II 4686 A and CIV 5802 A, appeared in the spectrum. The temperature and luminosity of the hot component in this period were $$T_{\textrm{hot}}\approx 90\,000$$ K and $$L_{\textrm{hot}}\approx 1800L_{\odot}$$. We show that the quiescent state in 2017 differs little in its time and energy characteristics from the previous active state observed in 1993.

Simbiotične zvezde so dvojne zvezde sestavljene iz primarne zvezde, ki je rdeča orjakinja, in spremljevalne zvezde, ki je običajno bela pritlikavka ali nevtronska zvezda. Glavna tema naloge je preučevanje kemijsko-kinematičnih lastnosti simbiotičnih zvezd. Vzeli smo podatke iz pregleda neba GALAH, ki uporablja spektrograf HERMES skupaj z Anglo-Avstralskim teleskopom, ki se nahaja na Observatoriju Siding Spring v Avstraliji. GALAH je skupno opazoval več kot 550000 zvezd. Vzorec 15830 orjakinj spektralnega tipa M je bil izbran ob upoštevanju pogoja za barvni indeks $(J-K_s) >0,9$ ter paralakso $pi le $1 mas. Najprej so bile zvezde iz GALAH razdeljene v skupine glede na njihov intrinzični barvni indeks $(J-K_s)_0$ in tako smo dobili 13 predlog, ki predstavljajo podrazrede spektralnega tipa M. V simbiotičnih zvezdah pride do prenosa mase med rdečo orjakinjo in kompaktnim objektom, za kar je značilen presežek svetlobe v Balmerjevi H$alpha$ črti vodika. Vzorec orjakinj je bil razdeljen na dve skupini, prva z močno in druga s šibko izraženo H$alpha$ emisijo. Po vizualnem pregledu spektrov dobimo prvi vzorec s 33 kandidati za simbiotične zvezde in drugi vzorec s 381 kandidati za simbiotične zvezde. Z uporabo zvezdnih parametrov iz GALAH kataloga smo poskušali ločiti med orjakinjami na veji rdečih orjakinj (RGB, ang. red giant branch) ter med orjakinjami na asimptotski veji orjakinj (AGB, ang. asymptotic giant branch), ki sta v različnih fazah razvoja. S tem bi dobili boljše predloge in tako lahko bolj natančno analizirali kemijske lastnosti orjakinj in simbiotičnih zvezd. Za naš vzorec 15830 orjakinj je malo zanesljivih podatkov, zato smo ločitev med AGB in RGB zvezdami iskali v surovih GALAH spektrih. Integrirali smo območja v spektru, kjer se nahajajo elementi, ki naj bi bili v AGB zvezdah poudarjeni ali pa vsaj bolj močno zastopani. Iskali smo korelacijo med relativno intenziteto črt in infrardečim barvnim indeksom W3-W4, saj bi lahko tovrstne črte pomagale pri identifikaciji sistemov z orjakinjami tipa AGB. V manjšem vzorcu dobimo 4 kandidate za AGB zvezde, kar v tem vzorcu predstavlja 12% zvezd. V večjem vzorcu pa dobimo 21 kandidatov za AGB zvezde, kar je okrog 6% zvezd v večjem vzorcu. Ti rezultati se skladajo s podatki iz literature. Symbiotic stars are binary stars that consist of a primary star, usually a red giant, and a compact object, usually a white dwarf or a neutron star. The main subject is the study of the chemical-kinematic properties of symbiotic stars. The data used was from the GALAH survey which is using the HERMES spectrograph along with the Anglo-Australian Telescope located at the Siding Spring Observatory in Australia. GALAH survey observed a total of more than 550000 stars. A sample of 15830 giants of spectral type M was selected by applying the conditions for the color $ (J-K_s)> 0.9 $ and parallax $ pi le $ 1 mas. First, we divided the stars from GALAH into groups according to their color indices $( J-K_s) _0 $ and thus created 13 templates representing the subclasses of spectral type M. In symbiotic stars, the mass is transferred between a red giant and a compact object, which is characterized by an excess of light in Balmer's H$ alpha $ line of hydrogen. The sample of giants was divided into two groups, the first with strong and the second with weakly expressed H$alpha $ emission. After visual inspection of the spectra, we obtain the first sample with 33 candidates for symbiotic stars and the second sample with 381 candidates for symbiotic stars. Using stellar parameters from the GALAH catalog, we tried to distinguish between giants on the red giant branch (RGB) and between giants on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB), which are in different stages of evolution. This would give better templates and we would be able to analyze the chemical properties of giants and symbiotic stars more accurately. There is little reliable data for our sample of 15830 giants, so we looked for a separation between AGB and RGB stars in the raw GALAH spectra. We have integrated areas in the spectrum where elements, that should be more strongly represented in AGB stars, were located. We were looking for a correlation between the relative intensity of the lines and the infrared color index W3-W4, as such lines could help identify systems with AGB giants. In a smaller sample, we get 4 candidates for AGB stars, which represents 12% of stars in this sample. In the larger sample, there is 21 candidates for AGB stars, which is about 6% of the stars in this sample. These results are consistent with data from the literature.

Symbiotic stars are interacting binaries with one of the longest orbital periods. Since they can contain a massive white dwarf with a high accretion rate they are considered a possible type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) progenitors. Among symbiotic binaries there are systems containing a Mira donor, which can have orbital periods of a few tens of years and more. This subclass of symbiotic stars due to their very large separation usually was not considered promising SNe Ia progenitors. We analysed evolution of one of the well studied symbiotic star with a Mira donor, V407 Cyg. We showed that the standard evolution model predicts that the system will not become a SN Ia. However, by simply adding a Wind Roche Lobe Overflow as one of the mass transfer modes we predict that the white dwarf in V407 Cyg will reach the Chandrasekhar limit in 40-200 Myr., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitted to MNRAS, comments welcome

We present the results of our photometric UBV JHKL observations for the symbiotic star V1413 Aql obtained in 2012–2018. An analysis of the data has shown that inMay 2017 the system passed to a quiescent state with B − V ≈ 0ṃ 6 for the first time since 1993. It lasted no more than five months. The J − K color at the primary minimum of 2012 reached 1ṃ 5, which, given the interstellar reddening, corresponds to spectral type M5-M6 III of the cool component. A secondary minimum has been detected at φ ≈ 0.5 on the JK phase light curves constructed for the dates of observations with B ≥ 13.

Symbiotic stars show emission across the electromagnetic spectrum from a wide array of physical processes. At cm-waves both synchrotron and thermal emission is seen, often highly variable and associated with outbursts in the optical and X-rays. Most models of the radio emission include an ionized region within the dense wind of the red giant star, that is kept ionized by activity on the white dwarf companion or its accretion disk. In some cases there is on-going shell burning on the white dwarf due to its high mass accretion rate or a prior nova eruption, in other cases nuclear fusion occurs only occasionally as recurrent nova events. In this study we measure the spectral indices of a sample of symbiotic systems in the Southern Hemisphere using the Australia Telescope Compact Array. Putting our data together with results from other surveys, we derive the optical depths and brightness temperatures of some well-known symbiotic stars. Using parallax distances from Gaia Data Release 3, we determine the sizes and characteristic electron densities in the radio emission regions. The results show a range of a factor of 10^4 in radio luminosity, and a factor of 100 in linear size. These numbers are consistent with a picture where the rate of shell burning on the white dwarf determines the radio luminosity. Therefore, our findings also suggest that radio luminosity can be used to determine whether a symbiotic star is powered by accretion alone or also by shell burning., Ap.J. accepted for publication

Symbiotic stars belong to a group of interacting binaries that display a wide variety of phenomena, including prominent outbursts connected with mass transfer, as well as stellar winds, jets, eclipses, or intrinsic variability of the components. Dozens of new symbiotic stars and candidates have been discovered in recent years. However, there are many objects which are still poorly studied. Some symbiotic candidates suspected in the literature have never been studied spectroscopically. In this contribution, we present the first results of the ongoing campaign focused on symbiotic candidates. In the first paper in the series, we study the nature of ten candidate classical symbiotic stars suspected based on their photometric behaviour, colours or abundance pattern. To confirm or reject the symbiotic nature of the studied candidates, we obtained new spectra and analysed them in detail together with available multi-frequency photometric and spectroscopic observations of the objects. Hen 3-860 and V2204 Oph are genuine symbiotic systems showing typical spectral features of burning symbiotic stars and outbursts in the last 100 years. The first object belongs to the uncommon group of eclipsing symbiotic stars. V1988 Sgr cannot be classified as a genuine burning symbiotic star, but the scenario of an accreting-only symbiotic system cannot be ruled out. Hen 4-204 might be a bona-fide symbiotic star due to its similarity with the known symbiotic binary BD Cam. New Online Database of Symbiotic Variables includes several poorly characterised objects and candidate symbiotic stars, not only in the Milky Way but also in other galaxies. The goal of the research presented in this paper was to reveal the nature of 2MASS J07363415+6538548, the object discovered as an X-ray source in the field of NGC 2403, and tentatively classified as a symbiotic candidate or a cataclysmic variable. By analysis of available photometric data from ground-based surveys, together with high precision photometry from TESS, remarkable astrometric measurements of the Gaia satellite, and observations of other surveys spanning from X-rays to infrared, we have found that the object is not a symbiotic star nor a cataclysmic variable but rather an active K-type dwarf. The star is located in the distance of 415 pc, has an effective temperature of 4 275 K, luminosity of 0.14 L$\odot$, a mass of 0.7 M$\odot$, and radius of 0.7 R$\odot$. It has a rotational period ~ 3 days and is a strong X-ray source with the X-ray luminosity of ~ $10^{30}$ erg/s. SU Lyn, a star that ostensibly appears to be an unremarkable late M type giant, has recently been proposed to be a symbiotic star largely based on its hard X-ray properties. The star does not display, in low-resolution optical spectra, the high excitation lines typically seen in the spectra of symbiotic stars. In the present work, UV, optical, and near-infrared observations are presented, aimed at exploring and strengthening the proposed symbiotic classification for this star. Our Far-UV 1300-1800$\AA$ spectrum of SU Lyn, obtained with the ASTROSAT mission's UVIT payload, shows emission lines of Si IV, C IV, OIII and N III in a spectrum typical of symbiotic stars. The UV spectrum robustly confirms SU Lyn's symbiotic nature. The detection of high excitation lines in a high-resolution optical spectrum further consolidates its symbiotic nature. As is being recognized, the potential existence of other similar symbiotic systems could significantly impact the census of symbiotic stars in the galaxy., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS-Letters

Using observed and published spectra in the optical region, we have studied a handful of novae and symbiotic stars that show novae-like variability in the quiescence phase. We present results for the novae T Coronae Borealis, GK Persei, RS Ophiuchi, V3890 Sagittarii and V745 Scorpii, and for a symbiotic star BX Monocerotis. Observations were carried out at the 2-m Himalayan Chandra Telescope (HCT). Generally, the spectra show prominent low-ionization emission features of hydrogen, helium, iron and oxygen and TiO absorption features resulting from the cool secondary component; T Coronae Borealis and GK Persei show higher ionization lines. We used the photoionization code cloudy to model these spectra. From the best-fitting models, we have estimated the physical parameters (e.g. temperature, luminosity and hydrogen density), the elemental abundances and other parameters related to the system. By matching the spectra of various giants with the absorption features and using the best fit, we have determined the types of secondaries and also their contribution to the spectra.

Symbiotic stars are strongly interacting binaries, consisting of a white dwarf and a cool giant, mainly of spectral type M. AG Draconis belongs to a less numerous group of the yellow symbiotic systems, as the cool component in this binary is of a spectral type earlier than K4. Recently, after seven years of quiescence, this symbiotic star exhibited a very unusual active stage with the four minor outbursts observed. Thanks to the excellent involvement of amateur astronomers and professional observatories, we can study the activity of AG Draconis in unprecedented details. We analyse optical photometric data of short term variability (flickering) of the accreting white dwarf in the jet-ejecting symbiotic star MWC560. The observations are obtained in 17 nights during the period November 2011 - October 2019. The colour-magnitude diagram shows that the hot component of the system becomes redder as it gets brighter. For the flickering source we find that it has colour 0.14 < B-V < 0.40, temperature in the range 6300 < T_fl < 11000 K, and radius 1.2 < R_fl < 18 Rsun. We find a strong correlation (correlation coefficient 0.76, significance < 0.001) between B band magnitude and the average radius of the flickering source - as the brightness of the system increases the size of the flickering source also increases. The estimated temperature is similar to that of the bright spot of cataclysmic variables. We present and discuss the results of our photometric and spectroscopic monitoring of 2SXPS J173508.4-292958 carried out from April to August 2020. This X-ray source, in the foreground with respect to the Galactic center, brightened in X-rays during 2020, prompting our follow-up optical observations. We found the star to contain a K4III giant with a modest but highly variable Halpha emission, composed by a ~470 km/s wide component with superimposed a narrow absorption, offset by a positive velocity with respect to the giant. No orbital motion is detected for the K4III, showing an heliocentric radial velocity stable at -12(+/-1) km/s. No flickering in excess of 0.005 mag in B band was observed at three separate visits of 2SXPS J173508.4-292958. While photometrically stable in 2016 through 2018, in 2019 the star developed a limited photometric variability, that in 2020 took the form of a sinusoidal modulation with a period of 38 days and an amplitude of 0.12 mag in V band. We argue this variability cannot be ascribed to Roche-lobe filling by the K4III star. No correlation is observed between the photometric variability and the amount of emission in Halpha, the latter probably originating directly from the accretion disk around the accreting companion. While no emission from dust is detected at mid-IR wavelengths, an excess in U-band is probably present and caused by direct emission from the accretion disk. We conclude that 2SXPS J173508.4-292958 is a new symbiotic star of the accreting-only variety (AO-SySt)., Comment: accepted in press in CAOSP (15 pages, 7 figures)

We report the first unambiguous observational evidence of Rydberg Enhanced Recombination (RER), a potentially important recombination mechanism that has hitherto been unexplored in low-temperature photoionized plasmas. RER shares similarities with dielectronic recombination, with the difference that the electron is captured into a highly excited state below the ionization threshold -- rather than above the threshold -- of the recombining ion. We predict transitions of carbon and oxygen ions that are formed via the RER process, and their relative strengths with collisional-radiative spectral models. Optical C II RER features are detected in published high-resolution spectra of eight planetary nebulae, and a C III transition has been found in the ultraviolet spectrum in a symbiotic star system. The relative intensities of these lines are consistent with their production by this recombination mechanism. Because RER has not previously been accounted for in photoionized plasmas, its inclusion in models can significantly impact the predicted ionization balance and hence abundance calculations of important astrophysical species. Calculations for C+ suggest that the enhancement in the total recombination rate can amount to a factor of 2.2 at 8100 K, increasing to 7.5 at T = 3500 K. The H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$ line profiles of the symbiotic star AG Peg observed on 1998 September (phase $\phi$ = 10.24), display the top narrow double Gaussian and bottom broad (FWHM of 200 -- 400 kms$^{-1}$) components. The photo-ionization model indicated that the ionized zone, responsible for the hydrogen Balmer and Lyman lines, is radiation-bounded, with a hydrogen gas number density of $n_{\rm H} \sim 10^{9.85}$ cm$^{-3}$ and a gas temperature of T$_e$ = 12\,000 -- 15\,000~K. We carried out Monte Carlo simulations to fit the Raman scattering broad wings, assuming that the hydrogen Ly$\beta$ and Ly$\gamma$ lines emitted within the radiation-bounded HII zone around a white dwarf have the same double Gaussian line profile shape as the hydrogen Balmer lines. The simulation shows that the scattering HI zones are attached to (or located just outside of) the inner HII shells. The best fit to the observed broad HI line profiles indicates that the column density of the scattering neutral zone is $N_{\rm H} \simeq $ 3 -- 5 $\times$ 10$^{19}$ cm$^{-2}$. We examined whether the geometrical structure responsible for the observed H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$ line profiles is a bipolar conical shell structure, consisting of the radiation-bounded ionized zone and the outer material bounded neutral zone. The expanding bipolar structure might be two opposite regions of the common envelope or the outer shell of the Roche lobe around the hot white dwarf, formed through the mass inflows from the giant star and pushed out by the fast winds from the hot white dwarf.

SMP LMC 88 is one of the planetary nebulae (PN) in the Large Magellanic Cloud. We identify in its spectrum Raman scattered O VI lines at 6825 and 7083A. This unambiguously classifies the central object of the nebula as a symbiotic star (SySt). We identified the cold component to be a K-type giant, making this the first D'-type (yellow) SySt discovered outside the Galaxy. The photometric variability in SMP LMC 88 resembles the the orbital variability of Galactic D'-type SySt with its low amplitude and sinusoidal lightcurve shape. Pre-outburst 2MASS and WISE photometry of Nova Sco 2014 (V1534 Sco) have suggested the presence of a cool giant at the location of the nova in the sky. The spectral evolution recorded for the nova did not however support a direct partnership because no flash-ionized wind and no deceleration of the ejecta were observed, contrary to the behavior displayed by other novae which erupted within symbiotic binaries like V407 Cyg or RS Oph. We have therefore obtained an 0.8-2.5 micron spectra of the remnant of Nova Sco 2014 in order to ascertain if a cool giant is indeed present and if it is physically associated with the nova. The spectrum shows the presence of a M6III giant, reddened by E(B-V)=1.20, displaying the typical and narrow emission-line spectrum of a symbiotic star, including HeI 1.0830 $\mu$m with a deep P-Cyg profile. This makes Nova Sco 2014 a new member of the exclusive club of novae that erupt within a symbiotic binary. Nova Sco 2014 shows that a nova erupting witin a symbiotic binary does not always come with a deceleration of the ejecta, contrary to the common belief. Many other similar systems may lay hidden in past novae, expecially in those that erupted prior to the release of the 2MASS all-sky infrared survey, which could be profitably cross-matched now against them., Comment: MNRAS, in press

This research was prompted by the discovery of 35 new or candidate symbiotic stars during a targeted search in the Local Group of Galaxies. A catalogue of a further 200 or so such objects has now been compiled. Many of them could be identified with counterparts in the POINT-AGAPE Catalogue. However, information in the Catalogue is limited to position, brightness and possible period, and light-curves are not available. The poster presented an example of a light-curve of a symbiotic star retrieved from original Point-Agape Catalogue data.
