Abstract: International audience; This work assesses the potential of nettle (Urtica dioica L.) fibers produced on contaminated lands for composite applications. The nettles studied in this work grew spontaneously and in a prevalent manner in poplar short rotation coppice planted for the phytomanagement of a land contaminated by traces of metals. Results show that the contaminant contents in nettle bast fibers are low: only traces were measured. It makes it possible to consider this biomass for material use. The measured matter yield is lower than those obtained with traditional fiber crops cultivated in Europe on agricultural lands but the tensile properties of the bast fibers are equal to or better than those of hemp and flax, making spontaneous nettle an interesting supplement to traditional European fiber crops for composite applications

Abstract: International audience; Flightless saproxylic beetles were selected in order to study the impact of temporal and spatial discontinuity of forests. They were chosen because: (1) they are unable to fly, making them dispersal-limited species, (2) they have a saproxylic diet, which means they are closely linked to the forest, and (3), they have rarely been studied. Forest temporal continuity was expected to be the main factor explaining the presence of these species, modulated by thepast and present amount of forest in the surrounding landscape. Twenty-seven forests, distributed into three zones, were sampled in southwestern France. Flightless saproxylic beetles were surveyed using a Winkler extractor and a Berlese funnel. Their presence/absence were modelled using generalised linear mixed models, with zone variable as random effect. Two species showed significant zone effect and were only or more present in the zone withthe highest present forest amount in a 0.5 km radius. In the model that converged, the only selected variable was the past amount of forest in the landscape. The size of the forest, the presence of dead wood and the forest temporal continuity were not included in this model. The importance of the amount of forest in the landscape supports the hypothesis that dispersal-limited species are affected by landscape characteristics. This study demonstrates an important link between the presence of Dienerella clathrata and the amount of forest inthe past, which led to an indicator species analysis being performed.

Abstract: The idea that noncrop habitat enhances pest control and represents a win–win opportunity to conserve biodiversity and bolster yields has emerged as an agroecological paradigm. However, while noncrop habitat in landscapes surrounding farms sometimes benefits pest predators, natural enemy responses remain heterogeneous across studies and effects on pests are inconclusive. The observed heterogeneity in species responses to noncrop habitat may be biological in origin or could result from variation in how habitat and biocontrol are measured. Here, we use a pest-control database encompassing 132 studies and 6,759 sites worldwide to model natural enemy and pest abundances, predation rates, and crop damage as a function of landscape composition. Our results showed that although landscape composition explained significant variation within studies, pest and enemy abundances, predation rates, crop damage, and yields each exhibited different responses across studies, sometimes increasing and sometimes decreasing in landscapes with more noncrop habitat but overall showing no consistent trend. Thus, models that used landscape-composition variables to predict pest-control dynamics demonstrated little potential to explain variation across studies, though prediction did improve when comparing studies with similar crop and landscape features. Overall, our work shows that surrounding noncrop habitat does not consistently improve pest management, meaning habitat conservation may bolster production in some systems and depress yields in others. Abstract: The rate of TreM formation per unit diameter growth was modelled as a function of tree diameter at breast height (DBH), and the model was calibrated considering cross-sectional observations TreMs on trees of different sizes. The model predicted realistic TreM formation rates at the tree and stand levels in forests dominated by Abies alba and Fagus sylvatica. This approach opens new perspectives to the analysis of forest biodiversity conservation strategies.

Abstract: Landscape ecology # Poster 8; L'effet de lisière est souvent invoqué comme explication de la distribution des espèces et des indices de diversité dans les tâches de forêt dans les paysages ruraux. Une analyse de la litterature faisant référence à cette explication montre qu'elle recouvre souvent des processus écologiques différents. Dans cette présentation nous défendons l'idée qu'il y a en fait plusieurs effets de lisières qui sont souvent présentés de façon indifférenciée alors qu'ils concernant des processus différents. Par une analyse à différents niveaux d'organisation de l'hétérogénéité créée par la discontinuité entre un milieu forestier et un milieu non forestier, nous montrons que l'on identifie différents effets de lisières sur la distribution des espèces. Nous montrons notamment que les effets de lisières observables sur un segment de lisière ne sont pas les mêmes que ceux qui concernent l'ensemble de la lisière d'un bois formée de plusieurs segments, alors que dans la littérature on trouve souvent une confusion entre ces deux niveaux. Une terminologie plus précise est nécessaire pour identifier les différents effets de lisière et clarifier leurs rôles respectifs afin de mieux les prendre en compte dans la compréhension des processus écologiques induits par les lisières et ainsi mieux gérer la biodiversité et es services écosystémiques qui en dépendent.

Abstract: International audience; Context: Understanding the variability of vegetation distribution and its determinants is a central issue for addressing the effects of edges on ecological processes. Recent studies have revealed inconsistencies in the patterns of responses to edge effects that raise important questions about their determinants. We investigated the edge effect response patterns by adapting a recently proposed continuous approach to the case of small forest fragments in southwestern France. Methods: We surveyed forest understory vegetation (composition, species richness, and percent cover) and abiotic variables (soil temperature, moisture, pH, and canopy openness) along 28 transects across hard forest edges. We tested five statistical models to describe the response pattern of each variable (1) over all transects and (2) per transect. We then compared the response patterns as a function of the attributes of the edge (orientation, topography, and adjacent land cover) and forest patch size. Results: Over all transects, a general decreasing trend was observed for all variables as the distance from the edge increased. In the individual transects, we evidenced a large variability in the response patterns that was not related to edge attributes or to patch size. Conclusion: It is difficult to assess the depth of edge influence in highly fragmented forests and to identify the determinants of edge effects. We recommend that care should be taken with studies using pool of transects, and that further studies should be carried out including situations with neutral patterns, in order to gain a broader understanding of edge effects on vegetation.

Abstract: International audience; Forest pest damage is expected to increase with global change. Tree diversity could mitigate this impact, but unambiguous demonstration of the diversity–resistance relationship is lacking in semi-natural mature forests. We used a network of 208 forest plots sampled along two orthogonal gradients of increasing tree species richness and latitudes to assess total tree defoliation in Europe. We found a positive relationship between tree species richness and resistance to insect herbivores: overall damage to broadleaved species significantly decreased with the number of tree species in mature forests. This pattern of associational resistance was frequently observed across tree species and countries, irrespective of their climate. These findings confirm the greater potential of mixed forests to face future biotic disturbances in a changing world.

Abstract: Fons van der Plas [et al.].- Received 8 September 2015, Accepted 19 February 2016, Published 24 March 2016, There is considerable evidence that biodiversity promotes multiple ecosystem functions (multifunctionality), thus ensuring the delivery of ecosystem services important for human well-being. However, the mechanisms underlying this relationship are poorly understood, especially in natural ecosystems. We develop a novel approach to partition biodiversity effects on multifunctionality into three mechanisms and apply this to European forest data. We show that throughout Europe, tree diversity is positively related with multifunctionality when moderate levels of functioning are required, but negatively when very high function levels are desired. For two well-known mechanisms, ‘complementarity’ and ‘selection’, we detect only minor effects on multifunctionality. Instead a third, so far overlooked mechanism, the ‘jack-of-all-trades’ effect, caused by the averaging of individual species effects on function, drives observed patterns. Simulations demonstrate that jack-of-all-trades effects occur whenever species effects on different functions are not perfectly correlated, meaning they may contribute to diversity–multifunctionality relationships in many of the world’s ecosystems.

Abstract: Los bosques tipo varillal albergan una diversidad biológica endémica y varias especies monodominantes, cuando estos bosques se ubican en los pantanos acumulan gran cantidad de carbono en el suelo. El objetivo del presente estudio fue elaborar el mapa de distribución espacial de los varillales sobre arena blanca y sobre pantano en la provincia Maynas, Loreto, a escala 1/100,000, utilizando imágenes de satélite RapidEye y aplicando el algoritmo clasificador de Máxima Verosimilitud (MVS) en el programa ArcGIS versión 10.1. Usamos siete categorías de clasificación en tres escenas RapidEye y definimos las firmas espectrales respectivas basadas en 32 áreas de entrenamiento de muestreo en campo. Se clasificaron las 206 escenas restantes utilizando el algoritmo MVS. El mapa fue validado utilizando 57 puntos de control entre varillales y otros tipos de bosque. Se determinaron 51,025 ha de varillales que representan 0.67% de la superficie de la provincia Maynas, distribuidas principalmente entre las cuencas de los ríos Napo y Nanay y entre la ciudad de Iquitos y la boca del Río Amazonas. Obtuvimos un 91.2% de exactitud en la clasificación de los varillales. Las bandas borde rojo (BR) e ifrarrojo cercano (IRC) de las imágenes RapidEye diferenciaron mejor los varillales de los otros bosques. Se reportan nuevas áreas de bosque de varillales sobre arena blanca y pantanos. En conclusión, las imágenes RapidEye son útiles para clasificar y diferenciar los varillales de otros tipos de bosque, siendo el mapa de los varillales útil para la exploración de nuevos sitios en el estudio de almacenamiento de carbono en el suelo., The varillal forest type has an endemic biodiversity and several monodominant species, when occurring in swampy areas these forests have great amounts of carbon accumulated in the soil. The aim of this study was to develop a distribution map of varillales occurring on white sand and swamps in the province of Maynas, Loreto at scale of 1/100,000, using RapidEye satellite imagery and applying the classifier algorithm of Maximum Likelihood (ML) in the program ArcGIS version 10.1. We used seven classification classes in three RapidEye scenes, and defined the respective spectral signatures based on 32 training areas with reference plots sampled in the field. The remaining 206 scenes were classified using the ML algorithm. The map was validated using 57 check points of varillales and other forest types. We determined 51,025 ha of varillales representing 0.67% of the province of Maynas; these areas are distributed mainly between the basins of the Napo and Nanay rivers, and between Iquitos and the mouth of the Amazon River. The map of varillales was validated to 91.2%. The red-edge and near infrared bands of the RapidEye images differentiated varillales from other forest types. New areas of varillales on white sand and swamps are reported. In conclusion, RapidEye images are useful to classify and differentiate varillales from other forest types, while this map of varillales is useful for the exploration of new study areas of below-ground carbon.

Abstract: International audience; Whether increasing forest diversity should result in less insect damage (Associational Resistance, AR) or more damage (Associational Susceptibility, AS) is still debated. Moreover little is known about diversity - resistance relationships in mature forests due to methodological constraints. To address this question we used the FundivEurope exploratory platform. In this network of 209 mature forest plots, sampled along two orthogonal gradients of increasing tree species richness (from one to five species mixtures) and latitude (spanning from the Mediterranean to the boreal forest biomes), we assessed insect defoliation in tree crown. Focusing on eleven broadleaved species, we could for the first time demonstrate a global pattern of reduced defoliation (AR) in mature forests across Europe. We replicated the comparison of insect herbivory in pure vs. mixed plots of oak trees, at the edge or within forest patches. Here we found again significantly less damage on oaks surrounded by heterospecific neighbors, and showed that the magnitude of AR was larger at forest edge than in forest interiors. Last we tested the AR hypothesis with an invasive alien species, the Asian chestnut gall wasp, in Italy. Based on the same methodological approach, our study showed a significant decrease in gall damage with increasing tree species richness in mixed chestnut stands. Our work therefore provides new experimental evidence supporting the Associational Resistance hypothesis with three original contributions: i) AR does apply to mature forests, ii) irrespective of the identity of insect herbivores, iii) including alien pest species. These findings may have important implications for pest management in forest with the maintenance or improvement of tree species diversity being a promising tool for preventing insect damage.

Abstract: International audience; This paper examines the potential of MODIS-NDVI time series for detecting clear-cuts in a coniferous forest stand in the south of France. The proposed approach forms part of a survey monitoring the status of forest health and evaluating the forest decline phenomena observed over the last few decades. One of the prerequisites for this survey was that a rapid and easily reproducible method had to be developed that differentiates between forest clear-cuts and changes in forest health induced by environmental factors such as summer droughts. The proposed approach is based on analysis of the breakpoints detected within NDVI time series, using the "Break for Additive Seasonal and Trend" (BFAST) algorithm. To overcome difficulties detecting small areas on the study site, we chose a probabilistic approach based on the use of a conditional inference tree. For model calibration, clear-cut reference data were produced at MODIS resolution (250 m). According to the magnitude of the detected breakpoints, probability classes for the presence of clear-cuts were defined, from greater than 90% to less than 3% probability of a clear-cut. One of the advantages of the probabilistic model is that it allows end users to choose an acceptable level of uncertainty depending on the application. In addition, the use of BFAST allows events to be dated, thus making it possible to perform a retrospective analysis of decreases in forest vitality in the study area.

Abstract: International audience; The impact of invasive herbivore species may be lower in more diverse plant communities due to mechanisms of associational resistance. According to the “resource concentration hypothesis” the amount and accessibility of host plants is reduced in diverse plant communities, thus limiting the exploitation of resources by consumers. In addition, the “natural enemy hypothesis” suggests that richer plant assemblages provide natural enemies with more complementary resources and habitats, thus promoting top down regulation of herbivores. We tested these two hypotheses by comparing crown damage by the invasive Asian chestnut gall wasp (Dryocosmus kuriphilus) on chestnut trees (Castanea sativa) in pure and mixed stands in Italy. We estimated the defoliation on 70 chestnut trees in 15 mature stands sampled in the same region along a gradient of tree species richness ranging from one species (chestnut monocultures) to four species (mixtures of chestnut and three broadleaved species). Chestnut defoliation was significantly lower in stands with higher tree diversity. Damage on individual chestnut trees decreased with increasing height of neighboring, heterospecific trees. These results suggest that conservation biological control method based on tree species mixtures might help to reduce the impact of the Asian chestnut gall.

Abstract: Hoverflies (Diptera: Syrphidae) provide crucial ecological services and are increasingly used as bioindicators in environ- mental assessment studies. Information is available for a wide range of life history traits at the species level for most Syrphidae but little is recorded about the environmental requirements of forest hoverflies at the stand scale. The aim of this study was to explore whether the structural heterogeneity of a stand influences species richness or abundance of hoverflies in a montane beech-fir forest. We used the catches of Malaise traps set in 2004 and 2007 in three stands in the French Pyrenees, selected to represent a wide range of structural heterogeneity in terms of their vertical structure, tree diversity, deadwood and tree-microhabitats. We assessed hoverfly assemblages by recording species richness, abundance and functional diversity. Malaise traps caught 2,374 hoverflies belonging to 104 species. The catches of hoverflies fluctuated both in species richness and abundance between 2004 and 2007. Strictly forest species were only caught in the most heterogeneous stand. Species strictly associated with fir were not recorded in the least heterogeneous stand although fir was present. Although most of the functional groups were recorded in the three stands, species richness, abundance and functional diversity decreased dramatically from the most heterogeneous to the least heterogeneous stand. However, the species assemblages in the less heterogeneous stands were not perfect subsets of that in the most heterogeneous stand, as some additional species not found in the most heterogeneous stand were also present.

Abstract: International audience; Most people in forest and rural areas manage trees as part of their livelihood systems. The resulting “domestic” or “rural” forests are distinct from conventional forest. They have historically been overlooked by the forestry sector and impacted by forest policies and regulatory frameworks. These forests presently encounter requalification and valuation dynamics, fueled by a sustainable development ideology, and induced by both public powers and local communities. These dynamics move in two different directions: the naturalization of rural forests by policy makers, and their politization by rural people. We draw on long-term research experiences in France, Morocco, Southeast Asia, and Africa on forests managed by “farmers”, among which some are analyzed in the Ecology and Society Feature, Public policies and management of rural forests: lasting alliance or fool’s dialogue?. We first elaborate on domestication, analyzed at tree, ecosystems and landscape levels, as a concept allowing for a better understanding of the specific relationships developed between rural people and forests. We then engage in a critical review of how forest-related and sustainable development policies consider rural forests, and discuss how they address (or do not address) their specificity and encourage (or do not encourage) their development.

20. The multiple dimensions of rural forests: lessons from a comparative analysis

Abstract: International audience; Rural forests are characterized by different levels of formal and nonformal appropriation by rural communities who have generally managed, shaped, or rebuilt these forest formations over many generations with refined local knowledge and practices related to their use and perpetuation. Rural forests are therefore social-ecological systems that contribute to ecosystem and landscapes configuration, definition of rural territories, and sustainability of local livelihoods. Although some studies have attempted to explain their specificities, in specific geographical and social contexts, their characteristics are not well defined as they encompass highly diversified situations. This lack of comprehension of the identity of rural forests is at the heart of the lack of dialogue between forestry policies and rural forest development. Our major aim is to identify universal characteristics of rural forests as well as specificities that can differentiate them. Eleven situations of rural forests were analyzed by means of detailed, harmonized monographs, from developing and developed countries, and localized within contrasting ecological environments (humid tropics, dry forests, temperate forests) and socio-economic and public policies contexts. Qualitative data were obtained through a common analytical framework and were encoded with an approach based on the collective appreciation of the group of researchers who developed case studies. These were pooled within a common analysis chart and were processed by means of multivariate analyses. Results were further discussed taking into consideration four major characteristics that emerged from this analysis, and which form the identity of rural forests. These are: 1) specific forest structures and levels of integration in agricultural matrices which are linked historically to overall agroecosystem approaches and practices, 2) a multiscale approach to domestication practices from landscape to individual trees inscribed in continuities between “nature” and “culture”, natural processes and human techniques of control and transformation, 3) multiple uses of plant species which vary in relation to the commercial or noncommercial status of their products and a reversible nature of these use patterns accordingly, 4) the imbricate nature of rules of access and control between state and customary levels, and between individual and collective levels, requiring specific formal and informal arrangements. Typologies of rural forests can be drawn along each of these major characteristics and provide a reliable system to analyze and understand the functioning of rural forests. Forestry approaches in rural contexts, hence, need to consider variations along these major lines that form the identity cards of rural forests.

Abstract: Le projet CHAPAY a contribué à produire des connaissances, des méthodes et des outils pour prendre en compte les relations entre le changement des activités agricoles et des paysages dans l’action publique et la gouvernance des territoires. Le frêne trouve dans de nombreux sites des Hautes-Pyrénées des conditions favorables à son installation, mais sa croissance est très variable selon les stations. L’exploitation forestière de ces accrus nécessite, au préalable, une connaissance du potentiel de croissance auquel on peut s’attendre selon la fertilité de la station concernée. Nos résultats sont fondés sur une étude de terrain portant sur des accrus représentatifs des Hautes-Pyrénées. Nous les avons classés en niveaux de potentiel de croissance actuels et futurs et nous avons interprété ces niveaux par rapport aux données de fertilité chimique des stations. Cette méthodologie peut être étendue à d’autres régions et à d’autres types d’accrus. Elle peut servir de base à une catégorisation des accrus selon leur intérêt écologique ou économique.

Abstract: Les paysages ont vécu une révolution durant ces 150 dernières années. La connaissance de ces transformations est utile à la gestion des paysages aujourd’hui. Dans le cadre d’un partenariat entre le PNRL et le WWF relatif à l’inventaire des forêts anciennes, la digitalisation des 7 feuilles des minutes de la carte d’État-major (1860, 1 : 40 000) couvrant le territoire a été réalisée. Ceci donne une image des paysages vers 1860 : ils se répartissent entre les labours (43%), les forêts (27%), les pâquis (17%), les vignobles (6%) et les prairies (3%). Les milieux très artificialisés représentent seulement 2% du territoire. Le taux de boisement vers 1860 est de 27%, contre 51% aujourd’hui, soit respectivement 51 852 ha contre 99 670 ha. Beaucoup des forêts actuelles sont récentes, installées sur des terres antérieurement labourées ou pâturées. En comparant les forêts de 1860 et celles de 2003 (IFN), il est possible d’isoler les forêts anciennes, dont le couvert boisé est continu depuis plus de 150 ans, soit 46 776 ha. Leur part dans la forêt actuelle (47%) est importante par rapport à la moyenne régionale. Le massif du Luberon et les Monts du Vaucluse comportent la plus grande proportion de forêts anciennes. Dans le Pays d’Apt et le Luberon oriental, en revanche, le boisement a été multiplié par plus de 3 entre 1860 et 2003. L’écologie forestière a montré les conséquences des usages historiques sur la productivité des sols, le stock de carbone ou la biodiversité associée. Celles-ci restent à préciser sur le territoire du PNR du Luberon.

Abstract: Retention of a network of leave islands is a new tool used for biodiversity conservation, especially supporting cavity-dwelling and saproxylic species. Following a review of the literature, a generic method to set up such a network (including 7 steps) is proposed, together with practical tools. It is applied to the forests of Mont-Ventoux (southern France). A scenario, defined by using a participatory approach, leads to delineate a network of leave islands based on naturalness indicators (nativeness, old-growthness, ancientness, connectivity), together with a species approach, and taking into deep consideration economical aspects and security of visitors. The network must not exceed 3% of the total forest area. ELECTRE methods are used to rank the 132 described islands, based on the written scenario. 74 islands are retained to form the final network. The ecological values are maximised. The economical gap is minimised (66% of the islands represent a gap of less than 20€.ha -1.y-1). The revision of the management plan of Ventouret State Forest in 2012 has made possible to set up the first islands, one financially compensated by Natura 2000. The method proves to be able to evaluate and rank each island, and to discuss the connectivity of the network. It is available for further application to far different ecological contexts.; Le réseau d’îlots de vieux bois est un outil nouveau pour conserver notamment la riche biodiversité cavicole et saproxylique. Après avoir analysé la littérature, une méthodologie générique de mise en œuvre, organisée en 7 étapes, est proposée, de même que des outils pratiques. Elle est testée dans le Mont-Ventoux. Un scénario défini de façon participative conduit à un réseau d’îlots de sénescence fondés sur des indicateurs de naturalité (indigénat, maturité, ancienneté, connectivité), tout en ne négligeant ni une approche espèce, ni le manque à gagner économique, ni la sécurité du public. La surface des îlots est limitée à 3%. La méthode ELECTRE est utilisée pour classer les 132 îlots pré-repérés, au regard du scénario élaboré. 74 îlots sont retenus pour le réseau. Les valeurs écologiques sont maximisées. Le manque à gagner est minimisé (66% des îlots retenus présentent un manque à gagner < 20 €/ha/an). La révision de l’aménagement de la forêt domaniale du Ventouret en 2012 a permis la mise en place des quatre premiers îlots, dont un a été financé par Natura 2000. La méthode permet de bien évaluer et hiérarchiser l’intérêt de chaque îlot et de discuter la notion de réseau. Elle est disponible pour être confrontée à d’autres contextes écologiques plus variés.

Abstract: Anyone involved in timber production needs some knowledge of autecology. With the renewed interest in hardwoods in the last 20 years, they are increasingly being introduced by planting or encouraged in natural stands. The results in terms of growth have not always met foresters’ expectations, due to technical problems and especially because the species are not always suited to the different sites. While the principle of establishing hardwoods is not in question, it is important to be aware of the conditions they need for their growth. This is why the first component of the Pirinoble programme is about improving knowledge on the ecology and adaptation of valuable hardwood species. To support this, a wide-ranging bibliographic analysis was made of scientific publications in French, English, Spanish and Italian on the main hardwood species that can be established as plantations: - Wild Cherry (Prunus avium l.), - Common Ash (Fraxinus SSP.), - Wild service tree (Sorbus torminalis l.), service tree (Sorbus domestica L.) and other sorbus species. - Walnut (Juglans SSP.), - Common pear tree (Pyrus pyraster (l.) Du ROI) and the European Wild Apple tree (Malus sylvestris Mill.). - Lime (Tilia ssp.), - Maple (Acer SSP.). Favourable site conditions for hardwood trees are now better understood thanks to numerous observations carried out in stands and a number of scientific studies. Some species have been studied in more depth, including the wild cherry, wild service tree, common ash, maple and walnut. This guide is based on the results of these studies, supplemented by the expertise of the authors. It includes a series of autecology factsheets that describe the site conditions in which hardwoods will thrive and the minimum conditions required for rapid timber production. The factsheets were published on a regular basis in Forêt-entreprise in 2012 and 2013 (see footnote at the end of each of factsheet), and are now published together in this guide along with the bibliographical references consulted.

Abstract: Alors que l’économie agricole de la montagne pyrénéenne centrale régresse, des peuplements forestiers naturels ont progressé sur des terres agricoles abandonnées, plus précisément sur d’anciennes prairies d’altitude. Nous définissons les conditions d’un usage énergétique de peuplements d’accrus de frênes installés sur ces terres. Un agriculteur propriétaire forestier d’accrus peut prendre en charge lui-même leur exploitation, y compris le transport jusqu’à sa ferme et la fente de ses bois, afin de satisfaire ses propres besoins de bûches de chauffage. Le propriétaire pourrait ainsi récupérer une valeur résiduelle unitaire maximale variant de 11,2 à 22,3 €/st (euros par stère), soit une valeur moyenne d’environ 16,8 €/st, tous coûts déduits. L’exploitation des accrus en bois bûche pour le chauffage est donc financièrement possible. Une politique de développement d’une telle filière serait alors envisageable. Elle stimulerait les initiatives des agriculteurs propriétaires d’accrus forestiers., While the agricultural economy of Central Pyrenean is steadily declining, natural forest stands progress on agricultural mountainous meadows. For these forest extensions, we define the economic conditions of a new fuel-wood local economy. But it is possible that the forest owner makes himself logging, hauling and carriage to meet his heating needs, for a highest benefit from 11.2 to 22.3 €/st. So, an economy based on wood energy, with woods coming from private natural extension forests, is possible. It is based on an appropriate regional policy that will stimulate the necessary initiatives of forest owners of spontaneous ash reforestations to harvest these forest extensions.

Abstract: ACL (facteur d'impact); International audience; The management of small private forests in the Western World has been under threat owing to rural and agricultural transformations since the Second World War. The actions put in place to preserve those forests are hard to implement because the forests are managed essentially in an unofficial way that is not clearly understood. Through multidisciplinary approaches, our aims were to understand local forest management processes, to assess the continuities and discontinuities of usages and practices in the Coteaux de Gascogne area of France, and to propose guidelines for future forest management. Forest management is shaped by a traditional but unrecognized social system called the house-centered system, which has contributed to a high degree of domesticity and diversity in forestry practices in this area. If forest management guidelines are to be effective, any guidelines put in place should take into account the roots of the traditional management system and attempt to comply with local social organizations. This is a major challenge regarding the long-term preservation of small private forests.

Abstract: ID Base Horizon fdi:010057645; International audience; Among theoretical fields addressing the conceptualization of interrelationships between nature and society, patrimonial approaches remain relatively unexplored. Stressing the multiplication of local dynamics where elements of nature are redefined as "patrimonies" (ranging from local patrimonies to world heritage) by various social groups, this conceptual field tries to qualify these dynamics and their determiners to understand how they allow us to better address contemporary environmental challenges. Through a multidisciplinary approach in social sciences, centered on rural forests, we analyze the multiplication of patrimonial processes in forest development at various scales. First, we elaborate on the concept of patrimony and on patrimonial processes and present the current construction and dynamics of forest patrimonies. A crucial question concerns the links that form between the many spatial-temporal levels where these processes develop. Moreover, these patrimonial processes can be quite divergent, not only across scales from local to global, but also between "endogenous" (or bottom-up) and "exogenous" (or top-down) processes. We present two detailed examples in Morocco and Sumatra, where patrimonial constructions are developing simultaneously at various scales and through various actors who treat the forest in very different ways. Drawing from these examples, we discuss how and why the simultaneous development of different, often overlapping, patrimonial constructions along these scales allows collaboration or, conversely, can lead their holders into conflict. Lastly, we discuss the contribution of patrimonial concepts to resilience thinking and social-ecological systems theory.

Abstract: National audience; Les lisières entre les milieux forestiers et les milieux ouverts (agricoles ou autres) sont très fréquentes dans les paysages ruraux tempérés dans lesquels les forêts sont fragmentées. Elles jouent des rôles écologiques majeurs, notamment pour la biodiversité. Pourtant, les connaissances sur cette biodiversité et les services écosystémiques associés restent très partielles et parfois contradictoires. Or, les gestionnaires forestiers et agricoles vont avoir de plus en plus besoin de ces informations pour adapter leur gestion dans un contexte où les interactions entre les forêts et l'agriculture seront plus importantes, notamment à travers la valorisation des services écosystémiques tels que la pollinisation et la régulation des ravageurs. Les principales hypothèses expliquant la biodiversité dans les lisières forestières sont : i) le type de parcelle adjacente et la fréquence des perturbations en son sein, ii) la structure de la lisière (étagée versus abrupt) et donc le mode de gestion qui y est conduit. Durant le printemps 2011, nous avons étudié 24 lisières, 8 à proximité d'une parcelle de colza, et 16 à proximité de prairies. Les papillons de jour et les oiseaux ont été étudiés comme indicateurs écologiques présentant des traits de viedifférents et nous renseignant donc sur des aspects différents de la biodiversité. 52 espèces de papillons (N= 2127) et 54 espèces d'oiseaux ont été relevés (N=746). Les papillons sont significativement plus abondants dans les lisières, puis dans les prairies, les parcelles de colza et les bois présentant les abondances les plus faibles. La richesse spécifique en papillons de jour est significativement plus élevée dansles prairies et lisières (10.5 et 9.9 espèces en moyenne respectivement) que dans les parcelles de colza et les bois. Des espèces strictement liées aux lisières forestières ont été identifiées. Les oiseaux sont plus abondants et présentent une richesse spécifique plus forte dans les bois. La largeur de la lisière semble la caractéristique structurale à laquelle répondent le mieux les indicateurs écologiques étudiés.

Abstract: International audience; Boundaries between woodlots and agricultural habitats are numerous in temperate agricultural landscapes and influence ecological processes in both woodlots and agricultural habitats. 2 We aimed to determine how far the species assemblage of ground beetles in woodlot and open habitats was influenced by the presence of the woodlot-field boundary. 3 We studied the distribution of ground beetles on both sides of the boundaries of four woodlots along transects of pitfall traps (n = 140). The depth of edge influence (i.e. the distance from the boundary at which the presence of the boundary has no more significant influence) on the species assemblage of ground beetles in each woodlot and in each agricultural habitat was determined with nonlinear canonical analysis of principal coordinates, an ordination method that is followed by nonlinear regression of the principal coordinates on distance from the boundary. 4 The depth of edge influence on the species assemblages of ground beetles was asymmetrical relative to the boundary: it was generally higher and had higher variability in open habitats (14.4 ± 12.3 m) than in woodlots (4.9 ± 2.3 m). Species assemblages of ground beetles in edges were a mix between both adjacent species assemblages. Edge effects in woodlots were deeper in the woodlots exhibiting a deeper penetration of open habitat species. Symmetrically, edge effects in open habitat were deeper in the open habitats with a deeper diffusion of forest species into the open habitat. 5 Forest ground beetles were not threatened by edge effects. Rather, edge effects are likely to benefit agriculture, mostly through the dispersal of predatory forest species into agricultural fields.

35. The importance of biomass net uptake for a trace metal budget in a forest stand in north-eastern France

Abstract: International audience; The trace metal (TM: Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn) budget (stocks and annual fluxes) was evaluated in a forest stand (silver fir, Abies alba Miller) in north-eastern France. Trace metal concentrations were measured in different tree compartments in order to assess TM partitioning and dynamics in the trees. Inputs included bulk deposition, estimated dry deposition and weathering. Outputs were leaching and biomass exportation. Atmospheric deposition was the main input flux. The estimated dry deposition accounted for about 40% of the total trace metal deposition. The relative importance of leaching (estimated by a lumped parameter water balance model, BILJOU) and net biomass uptake (harvesting) for ecosystem exportation depended on the element. Trace metal distribution between tree compartments (stem wood and bark, branches and needles) indicated that Pb was mainly stored in the stem, whereas Zn and Ni, and to a lesser extent Cd and Cu, were translocated to aerial parts of the trees and cycled in the ecosystem. For Zn and Ni, leaching was the main output flux (N95% of the total output) and the plot budget (input-output) was negative, whereas for Pb the biomass net exportation represented 60% of the outputs and the budget was balanced. Cadmium and Cu had intermediate behaviours, with 18% and 30% of the total output relative to biomass exportation, respectively, and the budgets were negative. The net uptake by biomass was particularly important for Pb budgets, less so for Cd and Cu and not very important for Zn and Ni in such forest stands.

Abstract: Les lisières forestières sont des composantes clés des paysages ruraux car elles influencent des processus écologiques à l’interface entre les milieux. Les lisières varient selon leur physionomie, leur orientation, leur histoire et leur topographie, mais peu de méthodes sont disponibles pour identifier ces différents types de lisières et pour les cartographier sur une large étendue. Nous proposons d'identifier et de cartographier des segments de lisière basés sur la subdivision morphologique des contours de forêt. Ces segments sont caractérisés par eux mêmes et par requêtes sur d'autres données spatiales. Une chaîne de traitement basée sur des outils d'ArcGis, appliquée sur la sortie des outils GUIDOS, est utilisée pour identifier les segments de lisière. Nous fournissons des exemples de variables descripteurs de segments de lisières forestières obtenus à partir d'un modèle numérique de terrain et d'une carte d’occupation du sol. Les résultats montrent la faisabilité de cartographier automatiquement la variabilité des lisières sur une large étendue. Ces résultats ouvrent de nouvelles perspectives pour construire un nouvel outil d'analyse de la dynamique des paysages et de leurs effets sur la biodiversité., Forest edges are key components of rural landscapes because they influence ecological processes at the interface between habitats. There is a variability of forest edges, according to their physiognomy, orientation, history and topography, but few methods are available to identify these different types of edges and to map them at a large scale. We propose to identify edge segments based on morphological subdivision of forest boundaries. These segments are mapped and characterized by request on other spatial data. A procedure based on ArcGis tools, applied on the output from GUIDOS tools, is used to identify edge segments. We provide examples of edge segments descriptors obtained from a digital elevation model and from a landcover map. Results showed the feasibility of the automatic mapping of edge variability over a large scale. It opens new perspectives to build up a new tool for analyzing landscape dynamics and their effects on biodiversity.

Abstract: ISRN : ANR-FORM-090601-01-01; Les politiques du développement durable sont-elles favorables à la forêt des agriculteurs ? Malmenée par l’histoire, la forêt des agriculteurs (que nous avons qualifiée de forêt « domestique » ou « rurale ») est un objet orphelin indissociable de l’histoire des systèmes de production agricoles et des modes de vie paysans. Ses qualités hybrides, alliant à la fois production, qualités environnementales et bénéfices sociaux en font un exemple de choix pour le développement durable. Les crises actuelles la remettent au centre des stratégies rurales à travers des dynamiques de valorisation variées mettant en avant les synergies entre productions spécifiques, valeur environnementale, et développement social. Ces dynamiques permettent d’interroger l’un des grands chantiers du développement durable: la mise en avant du local comme caution et instruments d’une gestion durable des territoires. Dans les régions où les trajectoires locales vers la durabilité sont entravées par la marginalité économique, l’action publique, qui reconnait aujourd’hui la valeur du local après l’avoir longtemps dénigrée, estelle apte à accompagner sa mutation en suscitant de nouvelles synergies ? Ou bien, au contraire, va-telle accentuer le décalage qui a toujours existé entre les pratiques réelles, concrètes, mouvantes, des agriculteurs et l’appréciation qui en est faite ? Une approche dialectique de l’identité de la forêt domestique et de ses trajectoires de durabilité POPULAR a travaillé à travers le renforcement d’un réseau de recherche interdisciplinaire sur la forêt domestique permettant de mutualiser les expériences en approfondissant les questionnements sur la domestication, la résilience, la patrimonialisation, et en les synthétisant autour de la question du développement durable. La méthodologie globale est basée sur une approche comparative, cumulative et intégrative confrontant les trajectoires historiques et contemporaines de forêts affectées par des mesures publiques ou des dynamiques propres (valorisation de produits spécifiques liés à des savoirs locaux : Maroc, Corse et Cévennes, Languedoc ; mise en place de nouvelles gouvernances : Cameroun, Inde, Indonésie ; renforcement de gouvernances existantes : Maroc, Coteaux de Gascogne ; politiques agricoles : Pyrénées, ou foncières : Coteaux de Gascogne). La constitution d’une base de données et des monographies harmonisées comparées terme à terme ont permis la caractérisation de l’identité de la forêt domestique et de ses propriétés, dans les contextes locaux et politiques qui l’influencent. La confrontation de trois champs de conceptualisation théorique concernant les relations nature / société a permis de mieux comprendre le poids des nouvelles politiques publiques visant à assurer la durabilité de ces forêts. Résultats majeurs du projet : à travers une déclinaison spécifique du concept de domestication, pris dans le sens technique, environnemental et social, la forêt domestique propose un modèle original d’intégration socio environnementale dans la gestion des ressources naturelles qui éclaire de façon originale le rôle des interactions à différentes échelles entre processus écologiques, techniques, économiques et sociaux dans la durabilité des systèmes de gestion des ressources naturelles. Dans ses dynamiques actuelles, elle éclaire aussi les contradictions qui existent entre développement durable (plus faible sur la génération de revenu que sur le renforcement des qualités écologiques ou sociale), et développement tout court avec ses grandes forces d’évolution (marché, politiques de modernisation libérale). Production scientifique et brevets depuis le début du projet. Notre production scientifique s’est concentrée sur la rédaction d’articles et l’organisation de Colloques internationaux dédiés à la forêt rurale et à ses relations avec les politiques publiques, ainsi que sur les apports théoriques autour de la résilience, de la domestication, du patrimoine et de l’écologie politique. L’encadrement de thésards et de masters a constitué une part importante du travail. La valorisation se poursuit avec la production d’un numéro spécial de la revue en ligne Ecology and Society. L’année de la forêt constituera un point fort pour la diffusion des résultats auprès du grand public

Abstract: Seedling banks of woody species established under closed canopy have received little consideration in coppice forests despite their potential importance for natural regeneration. This study aimed to evaluate the influences of canopy composition and of distance from the nearest forest edge on the abundance and species richness of the seedling bank, for different ecological groups of seedlings (age, successional status and dispersal vector) in 68 fragmented coppice stands. Seedlings were found in 67 stands, with 19 species identified. Eight species present as older seedlings were lacking as first-year old seedlings, suggesting temporal variability of species recruitment. Seedling abundances of species with low-dispersal ability were positively correlated with the abundances of their conspecific adults. Seedling abundance of mid-successional species was negatively correlated with the distance from the nearest forest edge, while mid-to-late successional species seedling abundance presented the opposite pattern. Our results showed that woody species were able to establish frequently under closed canopy in these fragmented coppices and form a seedling bank which may be used for natural regeneration., Peu d’études ont porté sur les banques de semis de ligneux installés sous canopée fermée dans des taillis, malgré leur importance potentielle pour la régénération naturelle. Nous avons exploré le lien entre l’abondance et la richesse des semis de ligneux, et la composition de la canopée et la distance à la lisière la plus proche, dans 68 peuplements gérés en taillis. Les semis ont été regroupés en fonction de leur âge, et les espèces en fonction de leur mode de dispersion et de leur place a priori dans la succession forestière. Nous avons trouvé des semis dans 67 peuplements, appartenant à 19 espèces distinctes. Huit espèces présentes sous forme de semis plus âgés, manquent sous forme de semis de l’année, suggérant une variabilité temporelle du recrutement des espèces. L’abondance des semis des espèces à dispersion limitée est corrélée à celle des adultes. L’abondance des semis des espèces post-pionnières nomades, capable de s’installer en pleine lumière, est négativement corrélée à la distance à la lisière, tandis que celle des semis des espèces post-pionnières, plus sciaphiles présente le patron opposé. Nos résultats indiquent que plusieurs espèces de plantes ligneuses sont capables de s’établir fréquemment sous canopée fermée dans ces taillis fragmentés, formant ainsi une banque de semis potentiellement utilisable pour la régénération naturelle de ces forêts.

Abstract: In order to assess major characteristics of Collembola community diversity in fragmented coppice forests, a total of eighty soil samples were collected in sixteen plots that were representative of oak forest management practices, vegetation development after logging, and fragmentation in south-western France. Forty-seven species were recorded, but the community was dominated by two generalist species (Folsomiu quadrioculuta and Isotoma notabilis). The ecological classification of the species showed a dominance of forest generalist species. Forest specialist species were scarce, with open habitat species being less frequent and less abundant than might have been expected from this large area of forest frequently disturbed by clear-cuts. Correspondence factoranalysis revealed that the communities were loosely structured. The three first factors were analysed: factor 1 was correlated with euedaphic habitats and extreme habitats; factor 2 was correlated with water content of habitats; and factor 3 was correlated with logging methods. However, a hierarchical classification showed that the majority of plots were structurally similar and could be considered as representative of this community. The recurrent disturbances caused by logging and fragmentation have standardised the communities by eliminating forest specialist species, which are more vulnerable to alteration of habitats.; Pour évaluer les principales Caractéristiques des communautés de collemboles dans des forêts fragmentées gérées en taillis, un total de 80 échantillons de litière ont ét6 prélevés dans seize placettes représentatives des pratiques de gestion forestière en taillis de chêne, du développement de la végétation après les coupes et de la fragmentation des forêts du sud-ouest de la France. Quarante-sept espèces ont été recensées mais la communauté collembologique était dominée par deux espèces généralistes (Folsomiu quadriocuhtuet Isotomu notubilis). L‘analyse factorielle des correspondances révèle que les communautés étaient peu structurées. Le facteur 1 était associé aux habitats euédaphiques et aux habitats extrêmes et le facteur 2 était associé au niveau de saturation en eau des habitats ; le facteur 3 était associé aux pratiques $exploitation forestière. Cependant une classification hiérarchique a montre que la majorité des placettes avait une structure similaire qui peut être considérée comme représentative de cette communauté. Les perturbations récurrentes likes B l’exploitation et h la fragmentation forestières ont homogénéisé5 les communautés de collemboles par la raréfaction des espèces forestières spéialistes qui sont les plus vulnérables aux modifications des habitats.
