En Afrique intertropicale, les 100 premiers mètres sous la surface sont le siège d’intenses processus d’altération latéritique. En transformant la roche, cette altération facilite considérablement l’accès à de nombreuses géoressources (ex. or, argile, eau souterraine) par des exploitants nationaux. En conséquence, la mise au point méthodologique de carte de la zone d’altération latéritique et de cartes dérivées prédisant la localisation de la ressource en or et en eau souterraine constitue un pré-requis à une gestion raisonnée des géoressources. Cette méthodologie a été élaborée entre 2007 et 2008, dans le cadre du projet scientifique « Burkina Faso, Géoressources et Société » (BF-GS), par les services géologiques du Burkina Faso (BUMIGEB) et de France (BRGM), suivant une démarche participative Sud-Nord. Afin de répondre aux attentes des utilisateurs finaux (artisans, PME, aménageurs du territoire, ministère…), la création d’un « COMité d’UTilisateurs finaux » (COMUT) a formalisé le cadre nécessaire à l’expression de leurs besoins et a joué le rôle de comité de pilotage des activités scientifiques tout au long du projet. Au final, ce projet a permis aux services géologiques de maîtriser une méthodologie de cartographie pour la gestion raisonnée des géoressources et, à l’avenir, de les appliquer au Burkina Faso ou dans d’autres régions d’Afrique caractérisées par une altération latéritique. La collaboration scientifique sud-nord a eu pour effet de renforcer les relations entre les deux organismes publics à travers l’échange d’expériences, le transfert de compétences et l’acquisition commune d’un savoir-faire. In tropical Africa, the first hundred meters below the surface are the site of intense lateritic weathering process. By transforming the rock, this alteration substantially facilitates access to many georesources (e.g. gold, clay, groundwater) by national operators. Consequently, the methodological development of regolith map and of derived maps predicting location of gold resource and groundwater is a prerequisite for rational management of georesources. This methodology was developed between 2007 and 2008, under the scientific project "Burkina Faso, Georesources and Society, » by the Geological Survey of Burkina Faso (BUMIGEB) and France (BRGM), following a participatory South-North approach. To meet the expectations of end users (craftsmen, small businesses, regional planners, regional planners...), creating an end-user committee (COMUT) formalized the framework for needs expression and has played the role of committee steering to follow scientific activities throughout the project. Ultimately, this project allowed geological survey to master mapping methodology for the rational management georesources and in the future, to apply them to Burkina Faso or in other African areas affected by lateritic weathering. The South-North scientific collaboration has resulted in strengthening relations between the two geological surveys through the exchange of experiences, skills transfer and joint acquisition of know-how.

International audience; A country-scale (1:1,000,000) methodology has been developed for hydrogeologic mapping of hard-rock aquifers (granitic and metamorphic rocks) of the type that underlie a large part of the African continent. The method is based on quantifying the “useful thickness” and hydrodynamic properties of such aquifers and uses a recent conceptual model developed for this hydrogeologic context. This model links hydrodynamic parameters (transmissivity, storativity) to lithology and the geometry of the various layers constituting a weathering profile. The country-scale hydrogeological mapping was implemented in Burkina Faso, where a recent 1:1,000,000-scale digital geological map and a database of some 16,000 water wells were used to evaluate the methodology.
