We have identified a first group of 33 new candidates for symbiotic stars (SySt) of the accreting-only variety among the 600,255 stars so far observed by the GALAH high-resolution spectroscopic survey of the Southern Hemisphere, more than doubling the number of those previously known. GALAH aims to high latitudes and this offers the possibility to sound the Galaxy for new SySt away from the usual Plane and Bulge hunting regions. In this paper we focus on SySt of the M spectral type, showing an Halpha emission with a peak in excess of 0.5 above the adjacent continuum level, and not affected by coherent radial pulsations. These constraints will be relaxed in future studies. The 33 new candidate SySt were subjected to a vast array of follow-up confirmatory observations (X-ray/UV observations with the Swift satellite, search for optical flickering, presence of a near-UV upturn in ground-based photometric and spectroscopic data, radial velocity changes suggestive of orbital motion, variability of the emission line profiles). According to Gaia eDR3 parallaxes, the new SySt are located at the tip of the Giant Branch, sharing the same distribution in M(Ks) of the well established SySt. The accretion luminosities of the new SySt are in the range 1-10 Lsun, corresponding to mass-accretion rates of 0.1-1x10(-9) Msun/yr for WDs of 1 Msun. Recently, ground-based Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes have reported the detection of very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-rays from some gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). One of them, GRB~190829A, was triggered by the Swift satellite, and about 20000 s after the burst onset the VHE gamma-ray emission was detected by H.E.S.S. with ~ 5 sigma significance. This event had unusual features of having much smaller isotropic equivalent gamma-ray energy than typical long GRBs and achromatic peaks in X-ray and optical afterglow at about 1400 s. Here we propose an off-axis jet scenario that explains these observational results. In this model, the relativistic beaming effect is responsible for the apparently small isotropic gamma-ray energy and spectral peak energy. Using a jetted afterglow model, we find that the narrow jet, which has the initial Lorentz factor of 350 and the initial jet opening half-angle of 0.015 rad, viewed off-axis can describe the observed achromatic behavior in the X-ray and optical afterglow. Another wide, baryon-loaded jet is necessary for the later-epoch X-ray and radio emissions. The detection of a short hard X-ray burst and an associated bright soft X-ray source by the Swift satellite in 2020 October heralded a new magnetar in outburst, SGR J1830-0645. Pulsations at a period of ∼10.4 s were detected in prompt follow-up X-ray observations. We present here the analysis of the Swift/Burst Alert Telescope burst, of XMM-Newton and the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array observations performed at the outburst peak, and of a Swift/X-ray Telescope monitoring campaign over the subsequent month. The burst was single-peaked, lasted ∼6 ms, and released a fluence of ≈ 5 × 10-9 erg cm-2 (15-50 keV). The spectrum of the X-ray source at the outburst peak was well described by an absorbed double-blackbody model plus a power-law component detectable up to ∼25 keV. The unabsorbed X-ray flux decreased from ∼5 × 10-11 to ∼2.5 × 10-11 erg cm-2 s-1 one month later (0.3-10 keV). Based on our timing analysis, we estimate a dipolar magnetic field ≈5.5 × 1014 G at pole, a spin-down luminosity ≈2.4 × 1032 erg s-1, and a characteristic age ≈24 kyr. The spin modulation pattern appears highly pulsed in the soft X-ray band, and becomes smoother at higher energies. Several short X-ray bursts were detected during our campaign. No evidence for periodic or single-pulse emission was found at radio frequencies in observations performed with the Sardinia Radio Telescope and Parkes. According to magneto-thermal evolutionary models, the real age of SGR J1830-0645 is close to the characteristic age, and the dipolar magnetic field at birth was slightly larger, ∼1015 G., This research is based on observations with XMM-Newton (ESA/NASA), NuSTAR (CalTech/NASA/ JPL), and Swift (NASA/ASI/UKSA) and on data retrieved through the NASA/GSFCʼs HEASARC archives. H.E.S.S. Collaboration: et al., We report on the detection of very high energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) γ-ray emission from the BL Lac objects KUV 00311−1938 and PKS 1440−389 with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.). H.E.S.S. observations were accompanied or preceded by multiwavelength observations with Fermi/LAT, XRT and UVOT onboard the Swift satellite, and ATOM. Based on an extrapolation of the Fermi/LAT spectrum towards the VHE γ-ray regime, we deduce a 95 per cent confidence level upper limit on the unknown redshift of KUV 00311−1938 of z < 0.98 and of PKS 1440−389 of z < 0.53. In an effort to locate the sites of emission at different frequencies and physical processes causing variability in blazar jets, we have obtained high time-resolution observations of BL Lacertae over a wide wavelength range: with the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) at 6000–10000 Å with 2 minute cadence; with the Neil Gehrels Swift satellite at optical, UV, and X-ray bands; with the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array at hard X-ray bands; with the Fermi Large Area Telescope at γ-ray energies; and with the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope for measurement of the optical flux density and polarization. All light curves are correlated, with similar structure on timescales from hours to days. The shortest timescale of variability at optical frequencies observed with TESS is ∼0.5 hr. The most common timescale is 13 ± 1 hr, comparable with the minimum timescale of X-ray variability, 14.5 hr. The multiwavelength variability properties cannot be explained by a change solely in the Doppler factor of the emitting plasma. The polarization behavior implies that there are both ordered and turbulent components to the magnetic field in the jet. Correlation analysis indicates that the X-ray variations lag behind the γ-ray and optical light curves by up to ∼0.4 day. The timescales of variability, cross-frequency lags, and polarization properties can be explained by turbulent plasma that is energized by a shock in the jet and subsequently loses energy to synchrotron and inverse Compton radiation in a magnetic field of strength ∼3 G.

Due to the complexity of modeling the radiative transfer inside the accretion columns of neutron star binaries, their X-ray spectra are still commonly described with phenomenological models, for example, a cutoff power law. While the behavior of these models is well understood and they allow for a comparison of different sources and studying source behavior, the extent to which the underlying physics can be derived from the model parameters is very limited. During recent years, several physically motivated spectral models have been developed to overcome these limitations. Their application, however, is generally computationally much more expensive and they require a high number of parameters which are difficult to constrain. Previous works have presented an analytical solution to the radiative transfer equation inside the accretion column assuming a velocity profile that is linear in the optical depth. An implementation of this solution that is both fast and accurate enough to be fitted to observed spectra is available as a model in XSPEC. The main difficulty of this implementation is that some solutions violate energy conservation and therefore have to be rejected by the user. We propose a novel fitting strategy that ensures energy conservation during the $\chi^2$-minimization which simplifies the application of the model considerably. We demonstrate this approach as well a study of possible parameter degeneracies with a comprehensive Markov-chain Monte Carlo analysis of the complete parameter space for a combined NuSTAR and Swift/XRT dataset of Cen X-3. The derived accretion-flow structure features a small column radius of $\sim$63 m and a spectrum dominated by bulk-Comptonization of bremsstrahlung seed photons, in agreement with previous studies., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, A&A accepted

The duration of gamma ray bursts (GRBs) is usually characterized by time interval t 90, in which the total number of registered counts grows from 5 to 95%. Classes of short and long GRBs were first detected in analyzing the BATSE experiment data from the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO); burst duration separation point was found to be t 90lim ~2 s. A group of bursts of intermediate duration was first detected in analyzing the data of the same experiment in 1999 in the interval of ~1 to ~40 s with an average event duration of 〈t 90〉 ~ 3.5 s. The results from analyzing the catalog of gamma-ray burst data selected while ground processing BATSE data (i.e., the catalog of nontriggered events) showed that the intensity of intermediate bursts is lower than that of short and long bursts. Preliminary results from investigating the GBM catalog (onboard the Fermi Space Observatory) and the BAT catalog (onboard the Swift satellite) confirm the detection of events with similar properties.

MAXI J1957+032 is a transient Low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) that underwent four short outbursts in 1.5 years since its discovery in 2015. The nature of the compact object in MAXI J1957+032 is not clear, but it was proposed to be a neutron star based on the short-duration of its outbursts. Here, we report the results obtained after performing spectral analysis using data obtained with the X-ray telescope aboard the Neil Gehrels Swift satellite. When describing the spectrum with an absorbed power law, we found that the spectra softens (the power-law index increases from $\sim$ 1.8 to 2.5) as the luminosity decreases. Near the end of its outbursts the observed value of power-law index ($\Gamma$) is $\sim$ 2.5. To identify the nature of the compact object in this system, we used $\Gamma$ as a tracer of the spectral evolution with luminosity. In this work we present spectra of all γ-ray burst (GRB) afterglows that have been promptly observed with the X-shooter spectrograph until 31/03/2017. In total, we have obtained spectroscopic observations of 103 individual GRBs observed within 48 hours of the GRB trigger. Redshifts have been measured for 97 per cent of these, covering a redshift range from 0.059 to 7.84. Based on a set of observational selection criteria that minimise biases with regards to intrinsic properties of the GRBs, the follow-up effort has been focused on producing a homogeneously selected sample of 93 afterglow spectra for GRBs discovered by the Swift satellite. We here provide a public release of all the reduced spectra, including continuum estimates and telluric absorption corrections. For completeness, we also provide reductions for the 18 late-time observations of the underlying host galaxies. We provide an assessment of the degree of completeness with respect to the parent GRB population, in terms of the X-ray properties of the bursts in the sample and find that the sample presented here is representative of the full Swift sample. We examine the the emission from optically bright gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows as the Ultraviolet and Optical Telescope (UVOT) on the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory first begins observing, following the slew to target the GRB, while the pointing of the Swift satellite is still settling. We verify the photometric quality of the UVOT settling data using bright stars in the field of view. In the majority of cases we find no problems with the settling exposure photometry, but in one case we excise the first second of the exposure to mitigate a spacecraft attitude reconstruction issue, and in a second case we exclude the first second of the exposure in which the UVOT photocathode voltage appears to be ramping up. Of a sample of 23 afterglows which have peak V magnitudes 0.5 mag in their optical lightcurves, and there is a marginal trend for these GRBs to have long T90. Such a trend is expected for thick-shell afterglows, but the temporal indices of the optical rises and the timing of the optical peaks appear to rule out thick shells., accepted for publication in MNRAS

The Swift satellite has observed more than a thousand GRBs with X-ray data. Almost a third of them have redshift measurement, too. Here we start to investigate the X-ray spectral fitting of the data considering the low energy part where the N(H) absorption happens. Based on the available more accurate input data we examined the robustness of previous fittings and tested how sensitive the changes of the starting parameters are. We studied the change of the intrinsic hydrogen column density during the outburst for a few events. No significant variability of N(H) column density was identified.

On 28 March 2011, at 9:47 pm Eastern Standard Time, NASA's Swift satellite spotted a searing burst of light in the corner of its eye. Within seconds it had alerted astronomers on the ground, and their telescopes were soon trained on a dazzling spectacle. At the center of a galaxy 3.8 billion light years away, a supermassive black hole was devouring a star that had strayed too close, tearing it apart to spark a gargantuan swirling firework. Then, suddenly, a narrow Jet of radiation, pointed right at us, erupted from the black hole at dose to the speed of light. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are believed to be powered by the electromagnetic extraction of spin energy from a black hole endowed with a magnetic field supported by electric currents in a surrounding disk (Blandford & Znajek 1977). A generic feature of this mechanism is that, under certain fairly general assumptions, the energy loss rate decays exponentially. In this work, we are looking precisely for such exponential decay in the lightcurves of long duration GRBs observed with the XRT instrument on the Swift satellite. We found out that almost 30 % of XRT lightcurves show such behavior before they reach the afterglow plateau. According to Blandford & Znajek, the duration of the burst depends on the magnetic flux accumulated on the event horizon. This allows us to estimate the surface magnetic field of a possible progenitor. Our estimations are consistent with magnetic fields observed in Wolf-Rayet stars., 8 pages, 6 figures

We present the results of a temporal and spectral study of the BL Lacertae object OJ 287 in optical, UV, and X-ray bands with observations performed by Swift satellite during September 2019&ndash, March 2020. In this period, the source showed moderate variability characterized by variability amplitude of &sim, 22&ndash, 31% in all the wavelengths on a short timescale, except the hard X-ray band which was variable by only &sim, 8%. We observed that the X-ray flux of the source was significantly dominated by the soft photons below 2 keV. Soft lags of &sim, 45 days were detected between the optical/UV and soft X-ray emissions, while there is no correlation between the hard X-rays and the lower energy bands indicating the presence of two emission components or electron populations. Although two components contribute to the X-ray emission, most of the 0.3&ndash, 10 keV spectra were well fitted with an absorbed power-law model which outlines the dominance of synchrotron over inverse Compton (IC) mechanism. The X-ray spectra follow a weak &ldquo, softer when brighter&rdquo, trend.

In this paper, we study the possibility of detection of short term terrestrial lower ionospheric response to gamma ray bursts (GRBs) using a statistical analysis of perturbations of six very low or low frequency (VLF/LF) radio signals emitted by transmitters located worldwide and recorded by VLF/LF receiver located in Belgrade (Serbia). We consider a sample of 54 short lasting GRBs (shorter than 1 min) detected by the SWIFT satellite during the period 2009-2012. We find that a statistically significant perturbations can be present in the low ionosphere, and reactions on GRBs may be observed immediately after the beginning of the GRB event or with a time delay of 60 s - 90 s.

We have studied long-term optical, ultraviolet (UV) and X-ray observations of OJ 287 collected with the UVOT and XRT instruments mounted on board the Swift satellite to quantify spectral and temporal variability patterns observed during different activity states. We characterized the flux variations using the data collected during almost 11 yr of the monitoring of the blazar. Significant variability of the blazar has been detected both in the flux and spectral index from the optical to X-ray regimes. We noted that the variability patterns observed in the optical range are more pronounced than the ones in the X-ray band. There is no clear relation between the optical/UV and X-ray emission, neither during the quiescence state nor during outbursts. The most significant flares in the optical/UV regime were detected in 2015 December-2016 January. The shortest variability time-scale is one day and it is limited by the observation pointing. A low activity state of OJ 287 was observed at the end of 2014, while the beginning of 2015 revealed a flat X-ray spectrum, which has been observed for the first time. On one hand, this can be a spectral upturn where the synchrotron and inverse Compton components meet, but on the other hand, it can be generated by an additional emission component. The spectral studies have not revealed any bluer-when-brighter or redder-when-brighter chromatism in the colour-magnitude diagram for OJ 287 in any state of the source's activity. We compare ultraviolet (UV) and optical colors of a sample of 29 type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) observed with the Swift satellite's UltraViolet Optical Telescope (UVOT) with theoretical models of an asymmetric explosion viewed from different angles from Kasen & Plewa. This includes mid-UV (1600-2700 Angstroms; uvw2 and uvm2) and near-UV (2700-4000 Angstroms; uvw1 and u) filters. We find the observed colors to be much redder than the model predictions, and that these offsets are unlikely to be caused by dust reddening. We confirm previous results that high-velocity SNe Ia have red UV-optical colors. When correcting the colors for dust reddening by assuming a constant b-v color we find no correlation between the uvw1-v or u-v colors and the ejecta velocities for 25 SNe Ia with published velocities and/or spectra. When assuming an optical color-velocity relation, a correlation of 2 and 3.6 sigma is found for uvw1-v and u-v. However, we find that the correlation is driven by the reddening correction and can be reproduced with random colors which are corrected for reddening. The significance of a correlation between the UV colors and the velocity is thus dependent on the assumed slope of the optical color-velocity relation. After such a correction, the uvw1-v versus velocity slope is shallower than that predicted by the models and offset to redder colors. A significant scatter still remains in the uvw1-v colors including a large spread at low velocities. This demonstrates that the NUV-blue/red spread is not caused solely by the photospheric velocity. Hard-TeV BL Lacs are a new type of blazars characterized by a hard intrinsic TeV spectrum, locating the peak of their gamma-ray emission in the spectral energy distribution (SED) above 2-10 TeV. Such high energies are problematic for the Compton emission, using a standard one-zone leptonic model. We study six examples of this new type of BL Lacs in the hard X-ray band with the NuSTAR satellite. Together with simultaneous observations with the SWIFT satellite, we fully constrain the peak of the synchrotron emission in their SED, and test the leptonic synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model. We confirm the extreme nature of 5 objects also in the synchrotron emission. We do not find evidence of additional emission components in the hard X-ray band. We find that a one-zone SSC model can in principle reproduce the extreme properties of both peaks in the SED, from X-ray up to TeV energies, but at the cost of i) extreme electron energies with very low radiative efficiency, ii) conditions heavily out of equipartition (by 3 to 5 orders of magnitude), and iii) not accounting for the simultaneous UV data, which then should belong to a different emission component, possibly the same as the far-IR (WISE) data. We find evidence of this separation of the UV and X-ray emission in at least two objects. In any case, the TeV electrons must not "see" the UV or lower-energy photons, even if coming from different zones/populations, or the increased radiative cooling would steepen the VHE spectrum., 13 pages, 2 figures. Ever since the insightful analysis of the durations of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) by Kouveliotou et al. (Astrophys. J. Lett. 413:101, 1993), GRBs have most often been classified into two populations: “short bursts” (shorter than 2.0 seconds) and “long bursts” (longer than 2.0 seconds). However, recent works have suggested the existence of an intermediate population in the bursts observed by the Swift satellite. Moreover, some researchers have questioned the universality of the 2.0-second dividing line between short and long bursts: some bursts may be short but actually result from collapsars, the physical mechanism behind normally long bursts, and some long ones may originate from mergers, the usual progenitors of short GRBs. In this work, we focus on GRBs detected by the Fermi satellite (which has a much higher detection rate than Swift and other burst-detecting satellites) and study the distribution of their durations measured in the observer’s reference frame and, for those with known redshifts, in the bursts’ reference frames. However, there are relatively few bursts with measured redshifts, and this makes an accurate study difficult. To overcome this problem, we follow Zhang and Wang (Astrophys. J. 852:1, 2018) and determine a “pseudo-redshift” from the correlation relation between the luminosity $L_{p}$ and the energy $E_{p}$ , both of which are calculated at the peak of the flux. Interestingly, we find that the uncertainties in the quantities observed and used in the determination of pseudo-redshifts, do affect the precision of the individual results significantly, but they keep the distribution of pseudo-redshifts very similar to that of the actual ones and thus allow us to use pseudo-redshifts for our statistical study. We briefly present the advantages and disadvantages of using pseudo-redshifts in this context. We use the reduced chi-square and the maximization of the log-likelihood to statistically analyze the distribution of Fermi GRB durations. Both methods show that the distribution of the observed (measured) and the intrinsic (source/rest frame) bursts durations are better represented by two groups/populations, rather than three.

Ten years of operations of the Swift satellite have allow us to collect a small sample of long Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) at redshift larger than six. I will review here the present status of this research field and discuss the possible use of GRBs as a fundamental new tool to explore the early Universe, complementary to quasar and galaxy surveys., 12 pages, 4 figures, to be published in the Journal of High Energy Astrophysics special issue: "Swift: Ten Years of Discovery"

We present optical and near-infrared (NIR) photometry of 28 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) detected by the \textit{Swift} satellite and rapidly observed by the Reionization and Transients Infrared/Optical (RATIR) camera. We compare the optical flux at fiducial times of 5.5 and 11 hours after the high-energy trigger to that in the X-ray regime to quantify optical darkness. 46$\pm$9 per cent (13/28) of all bursts in our sample and 55$\pm$10 per cent (13/26) of long GRBs are optically dark, which is statistically consistently with previous studies. Fitting RATIR optical and NIR spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 19 GRBs, most (6/7) optically dark GRBs either occur at high-redshift ($z>4.5$) or have a high dust content in their host galaxies ($A_{\rm V} > 0.3$). Performing K-S tests, we compare the RATIR sample to those previously presented in the literature, finding our distributions of redshift, optical darkness, host dust extinction and X-ray derived column density to be consistent. The one reported discrepancy is with host galaxy dust content in the BAT6 sample, which appears inconsistent with our sample and other previous literature. Comparing X-ray derived host galaxy hydrogen column densities to host galaxy dust extinction, we find that GRBs tend to occur in host galaxies with a higher metal-to-dust ratio than our own Galaxy, more akin to the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. Finally, to mitigate time evolution of optical darkness, we measure $\beta_{\rm OX,rest}$ at a fixed rest frame time, $t_{\rm rest}=1.5$ hours and fixed rest frame energies in the X-ray and optical regimes. Choosing to evaluate optical flux at $\lambda_{\rm rest}=0.25~\mu$m, we remove high-redshift as a source of optical darkness, demonstrating that optical darkness must result from either high-redshift, dust content in the host galaxy along the GRB sight line, or a combination of the two., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS. 20 pages, 10 figures, 6 tables

The origin of gamma-ray bursts is still one of the unresolved problems in physics. They are short, intense, and non-repeating flashes of MeV gamma-rays with a wide range of spectral and temporal properties. Also these bursts are perhaps sources of neutrino emission. Unlike the photons, which may scatter or be absorbed, the neutrinos, due to their small interaction cross section, arrive at the Earth unaffected. This paper describes experimental methods for detection of low energy neutrinos in the range from 20 MeV to 100MeV at the Baksan Underground Scintillation Telescope. In the analysis we search neutrinos in time coincidence with a gamma-ray burst. We use filtered data collected at the Telescope during 2012. We also use the catalogue of gamma-ray bursts of the SWIFT satellite experiment.

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are the most powerful events in the universe, and are promising standard candles for cosmological studies. The data from NASA's Swift satellite reveal a distribution for the GRB number density that peaks at a redshift between 1 and 3. In this paper, we classify GRBs based on their duration and discuss the origin of their progenitors. We shed light on the formation mechanism of supermassive black holes and massive stars at the early universe, and show how this process and other related events can lead to a relatively high number of GRBs that peak at high redshift.

The black-hole binary V404 Cyg entered the outburst phase in June 2015 after 26 years of X-ray quiescence, and with its behaviour broke the outburst evolution pattern typical of most black-hole binaries. We observed the entire outburst with the Swift satellite and performed time-resolved spectroscopy of its most active phase, obtaining over a thousand spectra with exposures from tens to hundreds of seconds. All the spectra can be fitted with an absorbed power law model, which most of the time required the presence of a partial covering. A blue-shifted iron-Kalpha line appears in 10% of the spectra together with the signature of high column densities, and about 20% of the spectra seem to show signatures of reflection. None of the spectra showed the unambiguous presence of soft disk-blackbody emission, while the observed bolometric flux exceeded the Eddington value in 3% of the spectra. Our results can be explained assuming that the inner part of the accretion flow is inflated into a slim disk that both hides the innermost (and brightest) regions of the flow, and produces a cold, clumpy, high-density outflow that introduces the high-absorption and fast spectral variability observed. We argue that the black hole in V404 Cyg might have been accreting erratically or even continuously at Eddington/Super-Eddington rates - thus sustaining a surrounding slim disk - while being partly or completely obscured by the inflated disk and its outflow. Hence, the largest flares produced by the source might not be accretion-driven events, but instead the effects of the unveiling of the extremely bright source hidden within the system., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables. The HAWC gamma ray observatory is located at the Sierra Negra Volcano in Puebla, Mexico at an altitude of 4,100 meters. HAWC is a wide field of view array of 300 water Cherenkov detectors that are continuously surveying ~ 2sr of the sky, operating since March 2015. The large collected data sample allows HAWC to perform an unbiased monitoring of the BL Lac Mrk 421. This is the closest and brightest known extragalactic high-synchrotron-peaked BL Lac in the gamma-ray/X- ray bands and are extensively monitored by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on-board the Fermi satellite, and the BAT and XRT instruments of the Swift satellite. In this work, we use 25 months of HAWC data together with Swift-XRT data for Mrk 421 to characterize potential correlations between both wavelengths. This analysis shows that HAWC and Swift-XRT data are correlated even stronger than expected for quasi simultaneous observations.

We present results of the first four Swift satellite follow-up campaigns seeking to identify transient or variable X-ray or UV/optical sources that might be associated with individual candidate high-energy cosmic muon neutrinos detected by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. Real-time public alerts providing coordinates and arrival times of likely-cosmic neutrinos have been provided by IceCube, via the Astrophysical Multimessenger Observatory Network, since April 2016. Subsequent Swift X-ray observations of four likely-cosmic neutrinos (events 160731A, 161103A, 170312A, and 170321A) reveal multiple X-ray sources in the targeted 90%-containment regions, most of which have been previously identified, and none of which are considered likely sources of high-energy neutrinos. Observations exclude association with the brightest 30% to 65% of Swift-type gamma-ray burst X-ray afterglows over the observed regions. Contemporaneous Swift UV/optical observations, providing reduced coverage of the event localizations, also reveal no candidate transient or variable UV/optical counterparts. We discuss the results of these campaigns and our plans for further follow-up of likely-cosmic high-energy neutrinos from IceCube.

Blazars are highly variable objects and their spectral energy distribution (SED) features two peaks. The emission at low energies is understood, however, the origin of the emission at TeV energies is strongly debated. While snapshots of SEDs usually can be explained with simple models, the evolution of SEDs challenges many models and allows for conclusions on the emission mechanisms. Leptonic models expect a correlation between the two peaks, while hadronic models can accommodate more complex correlations. To study time-resolved SEDs, we set up a target-of-opportunity program triggering high-resolution X-ray observations based on the monitoring at TeV energies by the First G-APD Cherenkov Telescope (FACT). To search for time lags and identify orphan flares, this is accompanied by X-ray monitoring with the Swift satellite. These observations provide an excellent multi-wavelength (MWL) data sample showing the temporal behaviour of the blazar emission along the electromagnetic spectrum. To constrain the origin of the TeV emission, we extract the temporal evolution of the low energy peak from Swift data and calculate the expected flux at TeV energies using a theoretical model. Comparing this to the flux measured by FACT, we want to conclude on the underlying physics. The NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Space Science Mission Operations (SSMO) project currently manages 19 missions for the NASA Science Mission Directorate, within the Planetary, Astrophysics, and Heliophysics Divisions. The mission lifespans range from just a few months to more than 19 years. The WIND spacecraft, the oldest SSMO mission, was launched in 1994. SSMO spacecraft reside in low earth, geosynchronous, highly elliptical, libration point, lunar, heliocentric, and Martian orbits. SSMO spacecraft range in size from 125 kg (Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere (AIM)) to over 4000 kg (Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope (Fermi)). The attitude modes include both spin and three-axis stabilized, with varying requirements on pointing accuracy. The spacecraft are operated from control centers at Goddard and off-site control centers; the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and Magnetospheric MultiScale (MMS) mission were built at Goddard. The Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) and Wind are operated out of a multi-mission operations center, which will also host several SSMO-managed cubesats in 2017. This paper focuses on the systems engineering challenges for such a large and varied fleet of spacecraft.

The Be X-ray pulsar, SMC X-3 underwent a giant outburst from 2016 August to 2017 March, which was monitored with the Swift satellite. During the outburst, its broadband flux increased dramatically, and the unabsorbed X-ray luminosity reached an extreme value of $\sim 10^{39}$ erg/s around August 24. Using the Swift/XRT data, we measure the observed pulse frequency of the neutron star to compute the orbital parameters of the binary system. After applying the orbital corrections to Swift observations, we find that the spin frequency increases steadily from 128.02 mHz on August 10 and approach to spin equilibrium $\sim 128.74$ mHz in 2017 January with an unabsorbed luminosity of $L_{\rm X} \sim 2\times10^{37}$ erg/s, indicating a strong dipolar magnetic field $B \sim 6.8\times10^{12}$ G at the neutron star surface. The spin-up rate is tightly correlated with its X-ray luminosity during the super-Eddington outburst. The pulse profile in the Swift/XRT data is variable, showing double peaks at the early stage of outburst and then merging into a single peak at low luminosity. Additionally, we report that a low temperature ($kT \sim 0.2$ keV) thermal component emerges in the phase-averaged spectra as the flux decays, and it may be produced from the outer truncated disk or the boundary layer between the exterior flow and the magnetosphere., 8 pages, 5 figures, 2 table, conclusions unchanged, accepted for publication in ApJ

In 2015 July 29 - September 1 the satellite XMM-Newton pointed at the BL Lac object PG 1553+133 six times, collecting data for 218 hours. During one of these epochs, simultaneous observations by the Swift satellite were requested to compare the results of the X-ray and optical-UV instruments. Optical, near-infrared and radio monitoring was carried out by the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope (WEBT) collaboration for the whole observing season. We here present the results of the analysis of all these data, together with an investigation of the source photometric and polarimetric behaviour over the last three years. The 2015 EPIC spectra show slight curvature and the corresponding light curves display fast X-ray variability with a time scale of the order of 1 hour. In contrast to previous results, during the brightest X-ray states detected in 2015 the simple log-parabolic model that best-fits the XMM-Newton data also reproduces reasonably well the whole synchrotron bump, suggesting a peak in the near-UV band. We found evidence of a wide rotation of the polarization angle in 2014, when the polarization degree was variable, but the flux remained almost constant. This is difficult to interpret with deterministic jet emission models, while it can be easily reproduced by assuming some turbulence of the magnetic field., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, accepted by Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

Bright X-ray flares are routinely detected by the Swift satellite during the early afterglow of gamma-ray bursts, when the explosion ejecta drives a blast wave into the external medium. We suggest that the flares are produced as the reverse shock propagates into the tail of the ejecta. The ejecta is expected to contain a few dense shells formed at an earlier stage of the explosion. We show an example of how such dense shells form and describe how the reverse shock interacts with them. A new reflected shock is generated in this interaction, which produces a short-lived X-ray flare. The model provides a natural explanation for the main observed features of the X-ray flares --- the fast rise, the steep power-law decline, and the characteristic peak duration \Delta t /t= (0.1-0.3)., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

The Ultraviolet/Optical Telescope (UVOT) which is one of three scientific instruments onboard the NASA-led Swift satellite provides simultaneous ultraviolet and optical photometric data. We present the installing procedures of HEASoft software and the detailed method for using the HEASoft in UVOT photometric data processions. We focus on the application of photometry processes, and present the photometry of Quasar PKS 0537-441. The analysis of the photometric data shows that this source has extreme variations in optical and ultraviolet bands and the shape of photometric flux curves in each band is excellently in agreement with each other.

The interaction between the expanding supernova (SN) ejecta with the circumstellar material (CSM) that was expelled from the progenitor prior to explosion is a long-sought phenomenon, yet observational evidence is scarce. Here we confirm a new example: SN 2004dk, originally a hydrogen-poor, helium-rich Type Ib SN that reappeared as a strong H$\alpha$-emitting point-source on narrowband H$\alpha$ images. We present follow-up optical spectroscopy that reveals the presence of a broad H$\alpha$ component with full width at half maximum of ~290 km/s in addition to the narrow H$\alpha$ +[NII] emission features from the host galaxy. Such a broad component is a clear sign of an ejecta-CSM interaction. We also present observations with the XMM-Newton Observatory, the Swift satellite, and the Chandra X-ray Observatory that span 10 days to 15 years after discovery. The detection of strong radio, X-ray, and H$\alpha$ emission years after explosion allows various constraints to be put on pre-SN mass-loss processes. We present a wind-bubble model in which the CSM is "pre-prepared" by a fast wind interacting with a slow wind. Much of the outer density profile into which the SN explodes corresponds to no steady-state mass-loss process. We estimate that the shell of compressed slow wind material was ejected ~1400 yr prior to explosion, perhaps during carbon burning, and that the SN shock had swept up about 0.04 M_sun of material. The region emitting the H$\alpha$ has a density of order $10^{-20}$ g/cc., Comment: 16 pages

Large column densities, derived from X-ray studies, are typically measured towards AGN hosting water masers, especially when the H2O emission is associated with the nuclear accretion disk. In addition, possible correlations between the intrinsic X-ray luminosity and the characteristics of the H2O maser emission have been put forward that, however, require confirmation. We have performed high-sensitivity XMM-Newton observations of a sample of five H2O maser sources confidently detected in our ongoing survey with the Swift satellite of all known water masers in AGN, in order to obtain detailed X-ray information of these promising targets and to set up a systematic detailed study of the X-ray/H2O-maser relation in AGN. For three galaxies, NGC 613, VIIZw73, and IRAS 16288+3929, the amount of intrinsic absorption has been estimated, indicating column densities of 4-6x10^23 cm^-2. For UGC 3789 and NGC 6264 (the two confirmed disk-maser galaxies in our sample), column densities in excess of 1x10^24 cm^-2 are inferred from the large EW of the Fe Kalpha line. By adding our results to those obtained in past similar studies, we find that the percentage of water masers sources that host highly-obscured (NH>10^23 cm^-2) and Compton-thick AGN is 96% (45/47) and 57% (27/47), respectively. In addition, 86%, 18/21, of disk maser galaxies host Compton-thick AGN. The correlation between the galaxies' bolometric luminosity and accretion disk radius, suggested in previous works, is also confirmed.

In the view of the so-called Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) unified model, the nuclear activity is powered by a super-massive black hole (SMBH) at the center of a galaxy. An optically thick gas-dust structure surrounding the SMBH absorbs efficiently the nuclear radiation. Current surveys of the INTEGRAL Soft-Gamma Ray Imager (IBIS/ISGRI) and of the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) on board the Swift satellite have proven to be a powerful technique in detecting AGNs at soft gamma-ray energies. BAT and IBIS/ISGRI are coded-mask detectors having two major advantages: 1) they have a huge field of view, hence allowing to detect an large number of AGNs; 2) they operate at soft gamma-rays, hence collecting photons that are energetic enough to pierce efficiently through the gas-dust structure surrounding the SMBH. However, the sensitivity of coded-mask detectors is limited by heavy systematic uncertainties. Furthermore by design they block ∼50% of the incident photons causing an increase of statistical noise. This prevents the detection of the most absorbed AGNs. In this paper we will show that the BAT and the IBIS/ISGRI observations can be merged in order to produce a deep sky survey less susceptible to systematic and statistical noise. The survey of this virtual new mission extends over a wide sky area of 6200 deg2 sampling 113 sources. The scientific outcome from the study of the sample has been properly addressed to study the evolution of AGNs in the local Universe. Our results are compared to other missions and predictions on the results of the recently launched NuSTAR mission are made. We discuss the expected results when applying this survey to the entire extragalactic sky and first results of this survey on the Galactic center are shown.

Data from a recently discovered long Gamma Ray Burst (GRB 090102) by NASA’s Swift satellite revealed that such GRBs may not be fireballs as usually presumed, but instead they are powered and collimated by organized strong magnetic fields (≧ 1015 G) generated by the compact object, a neutron star (NS) created at the core of the associated supernova explosion (SNeII). A mechanism for the generation of such strong surface magnetic fields where power NSs result from the deaths of massive progenitor stars is described based on a non-conventional model for pulsar magnetic fields, namely, spinning polarization charge that I recently developed in [1]. I show that this could give rise to scenarios involving long GRB events as the one captured by the Swift satellite during GRB 090102 in January 2, 2009. The model predicts that the magnetic moment of a NS has a dynamical feature which makes it different from that of a simple pulsar. I show this could have serious consequences on the statistics of observing long GRBs and also help explain such scenarios as the steep decline in the photon count-rate and the subsequent shutoff in the Swift/XRT X-ray data from GRB 070110.

A significant number of long Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs) detected by the Swift Satellite have a plateau phase signifying ongoing energy injection. Using BAT and XRT observations, we find that many short GRBs show similar behavior which challenges the typical short GRB progenitor model. We suggest the remnant of neutron star - neutron star mergers may not collapse immediately to a black hole (or even collapse at all) forming instead a magnetar. This model predicts that there would be a plateau phase in the X-ray lightcurve followed by a shallow decay phase, if it is a stable magnetar, or a steep decay if the magnetar collapses to a black hole within a few hundred seconds. By fitting this model to all short GRB BAT-XRT lightcurves, we show that a magnetar could power the observed energy injection. This model can be tested using the next generation gravitational wave observatories

Follow-up observations of large numbers of gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows, facilitated by the Swift satellite, have produced a large sample of spectral energy distributions and light curves, from which the basic micro- and macrophysical parameters of afterglows may be derived. However, a number of phenomena have been observed that defy explanation by simple versions of the standard fireball model, leading to a variety of new models. Polarimetry has shown great promise as a diagnosis of afterglow physics, probing the magnetic field properties of the afterglow and geometrical effects ( e.g. jet breaks). Unfortunately, high quality polarimetry of a significant sample of afterglows is difficult to acquire, requiring specialised instrumentation and observing modes. In this talk I will review the recent successes in afterglow polarimetry, also showing first results of new instruments and observing campaigns. I will particularly focus on jet breaks.

Core-collapse supernovae can produce X-rays through a variety of mechanisms, which are briefly reviewed. Through a combination of targeted searches of specific supernovae and archival searches for serendipitous coverage of supernovae, the number of known X-ray supernovae has grown by a factor of five in the past 13 years, when the Chandra X-ray Observatory and XMM-Newton were launched. The Swift satellite has contributed greatly to the discovery of X-ray emitted supernovae, but care must taken with all Swift detections given its spatial resolution and the number of X-ray binaries typically seen in external galaxies. About half of the reported Swift detections of X-ray emission from supernovae are in fact not due to the supernovae but from unrelated nearby sources in the host galaxies.

On April 23, 2014, the Swift satellite responded to a hard X-ray transient detected by its Burst Alert Telescope, which turned out to be a stellar flare from a nearby, young M dwarf binary DG~CVn. We utilize observations at X-ray, UV, optical, and radio wavelengths to infer the properties of two large flares. The X-ray spectrum of the primary outburst can be described over the 0.3-100 keV bandpass by either a single very high temperature plasma or a nonthermal thick-target bremsstrahlung model, and we rule out the nonthermal model based on energetic grounds. The temperatures were the highest seen spectroscopically in a stellar flare, at T$_{X}$ of 290 MK. The first event was followed by a comparably energetic event almost a day later. We constrain the photospheric area involved in each of the two flares to be $>$10$^{20}$ cm$^{2}$, and find evidence from flux ratios in the second event of contributions to the white light flare emission in addition to the usual hot, T$\sim$10$^{4}$K blackbody emission seen in the impulsive phase of flares. The radiated energy in X-rays and white light reveal these events to be the two most energetic X-ray flares observed from an M dwarf, with X-ray radiated energies in the 0.3-10 keV bandpass of 4$\times$10$^{35}$ and 9$\times$10$^{35}$ erg, and optical flare energies at E$_{V}$ of 2.8$\times$10$^{34}$ and 5.2$\times$10$^{34}$ erg, respectively. We report our discovery in Swift satellite data of a transient gamma-ray counterpart (3.2$\sigma$ confidence) to the fast radio burst FRB131104, the first such counterpart to any FRB. The transient has duration $T_{90} \gtrsim 100$s and fluence $S_\gamma\approx 4\times 10^{-6}$ erg cm$^{-2}$, increasing the energy budget for this event by more than a billion times; at the nominal $z\approx 0.55$ redshift implied by its dispersion measure, the burst's gamma-ray energy output is $E_\gamma \approx 5\times 10^{51}$ erg. The observed radio to gamma-ray fluence ratio for FRB131104 is consistent with a lower limit we derive from Swift observations of another FRB, which is not detected in gamma-rays, and with an upper limit previously derived for the brightest gamma-ray flare from SGR 1806-20, which was not detected in the radio. X-ray, ultraviolet, and optical observations beginning two days after the FRB do not reveal any associated afterglow, supernova, or transient; Swift observations exclude association with the brightest 65% of Swift gamma-ray burst X-ray afterglows, while leaving the possibility of an associated supernova at much more than 10% the FRB's nominal distance, $D\gtrsim 320$ Mpc, largely unconstrained. Transient high-luminosity gamma-ray emission arises most naturally in a relativistic outflow or shock breakout, as for example from magnetar flares, gamma-ray bursts, relativistic supernovae, and some types of galactic nuclear activity. SVOM is a French-Chinese space mission to be launched in 2021, whose goal is the study of Gamma-Ray Bursts, the most powerful stellar explosions in the Universe. The Micro-channel X-ray Telescope (MXT) is an X-ray focusing telescope, on board SVOM, with a field of view of 1 degree (working in the 0.2-10 keV energy band), dedicated to the rapid follow-up of the Gamma-Ray Bursts counterparts and to their precise localization (smaller than 2 arc minutes). In order to reduce the optics mass and to have an angular resolution of few arc minutes, a Lobster-Eye" configuration has been chosen. Using a numerical model of the MXT Point Spread Function (PSF) we simulated MXT observations of point sources in order to develop and test different localization algorithms to be implemented on board MXT. We included preliminary estimations of the instrumental and sky background. The algorithms on board have to be a combination of speed and precision (the brightest sources are expected to be localized at a precision better than 10 arc seconds in the MXT reference frame). We present the comparison between different methods such as barycentre, PSF fitting in one or two dimensions. The temporal performance of the algorithms is being tested using the X-ray afterglow data base of the XRT telescope on board the NASA Swift satellite.

The intermediate Palomar Transient Factory (iPTF) autonomously responded to and promptly tiled the error region of the first gravitational wave event GW150914 to search for an optical counterpart. Only a small fraction of the total localized region was immediately visible in the Northern night sky, due both to sun-angle and elevation constraints. Here, we report on the transient candidates identified and rapid follow-up undertaken to determine the nature of each candidate. Even in the small area imaged of 126 sq deg, after extensive filtering, 8 candidates were deemed worthy of additional follow-up. Within two hours, all 8 were spectroscopically classified by the Keck II telescope. Curiously, even though such events are rare, one of our candidates was a superluminous supernova. We obtained radio data with the Jansky Very Large Array and X-ray follow-up with the Swift satellite for this transient. None of our candidates appear to be associated with the gravitational wave trigger, which is unsurprising given that GW150914 came from the merger of two stellar-mass black holes. We aimed to detect a supernova (SN) shock breakout (SBO) with observations in time domain. The SBO marks the first escape of radiation from the blast wave that breaks through the photosphere of the star and launches the SN ejecta, and peaks in the ultraviolet and soft X-ray bands. The detection of a SBO allows to determine the onset of the explosion with an accuracy from a few hours to a few seconds. Using the XRT and UVOT instruments onboard the Swift satellite we carried out a weekly cadenced, six months lasting monitoring of seven nearby (distance ≤ 50Mpc) galaxies, namely NGC1084, NGC2207/IC2163, NGC 2770, NGC4303/M61, NGC 3147, NGC 3690, NGC 6754. We searched for variable/transient sources in the collected data. We found no evidence for a SN SBO event, but we discovered five objects located within the light of the sample galaxies that are variable in the X-ray and/or in the UV. Our sample galaxies are within the Universe volume that will be reached by the forthcoming advanced gravitational waves (GW) detectors (a-LIGO/a-Virgo), thus this work provides an example on how to carry out Swift surveys useful to detect the GW signal from SNe, and to detect counterparts to GW triggers.

We present a measurement of the volumetric rate of superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) at z~1, measured using archival data from the first four years of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS). We develop a method for the photometric classification of SLSNe to construct our sample. Our sample includes two previously spectroscopically-identified objects, and a further new candidate selected using our classification technique. We use the point-source recovery efficiencies from Perrett et.al. (2010) and a Monte Carlo approach to calculate the rate based on our SLSN sample. We find that the three identified SLSNe from SNLS give a rate of 91 (+76/-36) SNe/Yr/Gpc^3 at a volume-weighted redshift of z=1.13. This is equivalent to 2.2 (+1.8/-0.9) x10^-4 of the volumetric core collapse supernova rate at the same redshift. When combined with other rate measurements from the literature, we show that the rate of SLSNe increases with redshift in a manner consistent with that of the cosmic star formation history. We also estimate the rate of ultra-long gamma ray bursts (ULGRBs) based on the events discovered by the Swift satellite, and show that it is comparable to the rate of SLSNe, providing further evidence of a possible connection between these two classes of events. We also examine the host galaxies of the SLSNe discovered in SNLS, and find them to be consistent with the stellar-mass distribution of other published samples of SLSNe., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS

We report the results of a 16-month monitoring campaign using the Swift satellite of PSR B0540-69, a young pulsar in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Phase connection was maintained throughout the campaign so that a reliable ephemeris could be determined, and the length of the campaign is adequate to accurately determine the spin frequency and its first and second derivatives. The braking index is 0.031 +/- 0.013 (90% confidence), a value much lower than previously reported for B0540-69 and almost all other young pulsars. We use data from the extensive monitoring campaign with RXTE to show that timing noise is unlikely to significantly affect the measurement. This is the first measurement of the braking index in the pulsar's recently discovered high spin-down state. We have investigated a group of unassociated radio sources included in the 3CR cat- alogue to increase the multi-frequency information on them and possibly obtain an identification. We have carried out an observational campaign with the Swift satellite to observe with the UVOT and the XRT telescopes the field of view of 21 bright NVSS sources within the positional uncertainty region of the 3CR sources. Furthermore, we have searched in the recent AllWISE Source Catalogue for infrared sources matching the position of these NVSS sources. We have detected significant emission in the soft X-ray band for nine of the investigated NVSS sources. To all of them, and in four cases with no soft X-ray association, we have associated a WISE infrared counterpart. Eight of these infrared candidates have not been proposed earlier in the literature. In the five remaining cases our candidate matches one among a few optical candidates suggested for the same 3CR source in previous studies. No source has been detected in the UVOT filters at the position of the NVSS objects, confirming the scenario that all of them are heavily obscured. Recent observations indicate that in a large fraction of binary neutron star (BNS) mergers a long-lived neutron star (NS) may be formed rather than a black hole. Unambiguous electromagnetic (EM) signatures of such a scenario would strongly impact our knowledge on how short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs) and their afterglow radiation are generated. Furthermore, such EM signals would have profound implications for multimessenger astronomy with joint EM and gravitational-wave (GW) observations of BNS mergers, which will soon become reality with the ground-based advanced LIGO/Virgo GW detector network starting its first science run this year. Here we explore such EM signatures based on the model presented in a companion paper, which provides a self-consistent evolution of the post-merger system and its EM emission starting from an early baryonic wind phase and resulting in a final pulsar wind nebula that is confined by the previously ejected material. Lightcurves and spectra are computed for a wide range of post-merger physical properties and particular attention is paid to the emission in the X-ray band. In the context of SGRB afterglow modeling, we present X-ray lightcurves corresponding to the 'standard' and the recently proposed 'time-reversal' scenario (SGRB prompt emission produced at the time of merger or at the time of collapse of the long-lived NS). The resulting afterglow lightcurve morphologies include, in particular, single and two-plateau features with timescales and luminosities that are in good agreement with the observations by the Swift satellite. Furthermore, we compute the X-ray signal that should precede the SGRB in the time-reversal scenario. If found, such a signal would represent smoking-gun evidence for this scenario. The X-ray afterglows of almost one half of gamma-ray bursts have been discovered to have a shallow decay phase by the {\em Swift} satellite, whose origin remains mysterious. Two main models have been proposed to explain this phase, relativistic wind bubbles (RWBs) and structured ejecta, which could originate from millisecond magnetars and rapidly-rotating black holes, respectively. Based on these models, we here investigate polarization evolution in the shallow decay phase of X-ray and optical afterglows. We find that in the RWB model, a significant bump of the polarization degree evolution curve appears during the shallow decay phase of both optical and X-ray afterglows, while the polarization position angle changes its direction by $90^\circ$ abruptly. In the structured ejecta model, however, the polarization degree does not evolve significantly during the shallow decay phase of afterglows, no matter whether the magnetic field configuration in the ejecta is random or globally large-scale. We observed 5 gamma-ray loud blazars at redshift greater than 2 with the X-Ray Telescope (XRT) and the UltraViolet and Optical Telescope (UVOT) onboard the Swift satellite, and the Gamma-Ray burst Optical Near-Infrared Detector (GROND) instrument. These observations were quasi simultaneous, usually within a few hours. For 4 of these blazars the near-IR to UV data show the presence of an accretion disc, and we could reliably estimate its accretion rate and black hole mass. One of them, PKS 1348+007, was found in an extraordinarily high IR-optical state, almost two orders of magnitude brighter than at the epoch of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey observations. For all the 5 quasars the physical parameters of the jet emitting zone, derived by applying a one-zone emission model, are similar to that found for the bulk of other gamma-ray loud quasars. With our observations we have X-ray data for the full sample of blazars at z>2 present in the Fermi 2-yrs (2LAC) catalog. This allows to have a rather complete view of the spectral energy distribution of all high-redshift Fermi blazars, and to draw some conclusions about their properties, and especially about the relation between the accretion rate and the jet power., 11 pages, 6 figures, submitted to MNRAS
