Superconducting microresonators have been successfully utilized as detection elements for a wide variety of applications. With multiplexing factors exceeding 1000 detectors per transmission line, they are the most scalable low-temperature detector technology demonstrated to date. For high-throughput applications, fewer detectors can be coupled to a single wire but utilize a larger per-detector bandwidth. For all existing designs, fluctuations in fabrication tolerances result in a non-uniform shift in resonance frequency and sensitivity, which ultimately limits the efficiency of bandwidth utilization. Here, we present the design, implementation, and initial characterization of a superconducting microresonator readout integrating two tunable inductances per detector. We demonstrate that these tuning elements provide independent control of both the detector frequency and sensitivity, allowing us to maximize the transmission line bandwidth utilization. Finally, we discuss the integration of these detectors in a multilayer fabrication stack for high-speed readout of the D-Wave quantum processor, highlighting the use of control and routing circuitry composed of single-flux-quantum loops to minimize the number of control wires at the lowest temperature stage. Throughout the last decades, development of low-temperature detectors focused mainly on the design of high-sensitivity, singlepixel devices. This includes such devices as semiconductor-based photodetectors and bolometers, Magnetic Metallic Calorimeters (MMC), Superconducting Tunnel Junctions (STJ), and Transition Edge Sensors (TES). However, these devices have had limited success in achieving the simultaneous large-scale array sizes and large-bandwidth operation necessary for high-speed, high-resolution detection. To overcome this performance limitation, it is advisable to focus on low-temperature detectors which are intrinsically adapted to giant-array multiplexing and ultra-fast readout. To adopt large scale frequency-domain multiplexing for low-temperature detectors, it is necessary to find detectors which"broadcast" at microwave frequencies. Superconducting microwave resonators naturally lend themselves to this task. One recent demonstration is an implementation known as Kinetic Inductance Detectors (KIDs). This detection mechanism can be adopted for low-energy EM radiation (radio, mm, THz) in continuous mode, or in pulsed mode for higher energy radiation and particles. We present an ongoing development for a KIDs instrument dedicated to millimetric ground-based observations at the 30m IRAM telescope at Pico Veleta. In the framework of the DCMB (Développement Concerté de Matrices de Bolomètres) collaboration we develop low temperature bolometer arrays for large field, high resolution imaging in astrophysics. DCMB is a R&D effort funded by CNES and CNRS involving a number of French laboratories. Two parallel developments have been made in this collaboration based on the NbSi alloy either semi-conducting or superconducting depending on the Nb concentration. Multiplexing schemes have been developed and demonstrated for these two options. Here we focus on high impedance bolometers and present two examples of array developments in progress: first, a 23 pixels array for the balloon-borne instrument OLIMPO and, second, 204 pixels for ground based observations with the 30 m IRAM telescope. Industrial hygienists (IHs) are called upon to investigate exposures to mold in indoor environments, both residential and commercial. Because exposure standards for molds or mycotoxins do not exist, it is important for the industrial hygienist to have a broad knowledge of the potential for exposure and health effects associated with mold in the indoor environment. This review focuses on the toxic effects of molds associated with the production of mycotoxins, and the putative association between health effects due to mycotoxin exposure in the indoor environment. This article contains background information on molds and mycotoxins, and a brief summary and review of animal exposure studies, case reports, and epidemiological studies from the primary literature concerning inhalation of mycotoxins or potentially toxin-producing molds. The relevance of the findings in the reviewed articles to exposures to mold in indoor, non-agricultural environments is discussed. Although evidence was found of a relationship between high levels of inhalation exposure or direct contact to mycotoxin-containing molds or mycotoxins, and demonstrable effects in animals and health effects in humans, the current literature does not provide compelling evidence that exposure at levels expected in most mold-contaminated indoor environments is likely to result in measurable health effects. Even though there is general agreement that active mold growth in indoor environments is unsanitary and must be corrected, the point at which mold contamination becomes a threat to health is unknown. Research and systematic field investigation are needed to provide an understanding of the health implications of mycotoxin exposures in indoor environments.

We conducted an evaluation of shredded paper insulation to identify potentially toxic components. The study was to provide a preliminary characterization of a few samples of insulation currently in use. The following samples were analyzed: previously produced insulation (PPI) containing fire retardants, shredded recycled paper (PPI feedstock), freshly produced insulation (FPI), and insulation which had been installed in a residence (II). Volatile constituents were analyzed by GC-MS from headspace air of samples held at room temperature or heated to 90 degrees C. Extractable constituents were sampled by extracting with methylene chloride, and analyzing by GC-MS. Formaldehyde analysis was done according to EPA Method TO11. Headspace air at room temperature contained no detectable quantities of volatile constituents for any sample measured. In headspace air at 90 degrees C, only PPI contained traces of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons and higher aldehydes, and FPI traces of toluene. Extracts of PPI contained traces of octadecadienoic acid methyl ester and aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons and higher aldehydes. Extracts of PPI feedstock contained traces of a substituted cyclohexenecarboxylic acid. FPI contained extractable diethyl phthalate (30-50 micrograms/g). Extracts of II contained traces of methyl palmitate, an octadecenoic acid methyl ester, and a phthalate plasticizer. No formaldehyde was detected. PPI was composed of approximately 98 percent paper fiber and 2 percent pre-gelatinized starch. PPI samples agglomerated together with less than 0.01 percent separating from clumps as fine dust. Boron and sodium were expected and confirmed because they were added to PPI and FPI as fire retardants. Chromium, copper, iron, potassium, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, and silicon were present at detectable concentrations. Study calculations indicate that an occupant would have to completely consume all the fine particles produced from 3.3 kg of insulation per day to have an intake of boron equivalent to the EPA RfD. No other constituent appeared to be present even close to toxicologically relevant amounts.

Wide variation in severity of unstable angina requires an individualized approach. The goals are to stabilize the patient's condition and prevent progression to acute myocardial infarction or death. The following points summarize the current status of diagnosis and treatment: Patients suspected of having unstable angina but thought to be at low risk can be discharged after clinical evaluation if further outpatient evaluation within 72 hours is scheduled. Patients thought to be at intermediate or high risk should be hospitalized. Thrombolytic therapy should not be administered without evidence of acute myocardial infarction. Assessment of prognosis by noninvasive testing often aids in selection of appropriate therapy. Coronary angiography is appropriate in patients judged to be at high risk for cardiac complications on the basis of their clinical course or results of non-invasive testing. Coronary artery bypass grafting should be recommended in almost all patients with left main coronary artery disease and many with multivessel disease, especially those with left ventricular dysfunction. Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty is also effective in selected patients. The discharge care plan should include continued monitoring of symptoms, appropriate drug therapy (including aspirin), and risk-factor modification.

This study investigated whether red cells with reduced deformability impeded flow through the microcirculation. Red cells were made less deformable in their normal biconcave disc shape by incubation with 2% formaldehyde (fRBCs). The blood supply to the right hind limb was isolated in 26 swine and the femoral artery was instrumented with two fine catheters, a flow probe, and an inflatable occluder. Flow was measured over a range of different perfusion pressures during adenosine-induced vasodilation under control conditions (C) and during an infusion of fRBCs at 1 ml/kg per minute (not to exceed 20 ml) into the femoral artery. At the same perfusion pressure (P), flow was significantly reduced 5 min after the fRBC infusion: Flow at P = 20 mm Hg, C = 41 ml/min vs fRBC = 10 ml/min; at P = 40, C = 160 ml/min vs fRBC = 79 ml/min; and at P = 60, C = 278 ml/min vs fRBC = 147 ml/min, with P less than 0.02 for all comparisons. Flow was still significantly reduced 15 min after the fRBCs, but by 30 min, it had returned to the control value. Chromium-51-labeling of red cells revealed that about one-third of fRBCs was trapped in the microcirculation compared to less than 3% of normal cells. This reduction in flow with fRBC infusion was not altered by alpha blockade, indicating that adrenergically mediated spasm was not responsible for the reduced flow. Aspirin 35 mg/kg iv completely prevented the reduction in flow despite an absence of change in the percentage of fRBCs trapped. Thus, red cells with reduced deformability infused into the circulation caused a significant, but transient, reduction in flow. The reduction in flow was not primarily related to entrapment of the abnormal RBCs, but may be mediated through platelet aggregation or release of potent vasoconstrictor substances from platelets or endothelial cells.
