1. The Advanced Placement Program in Texas -- Local Access Offered by Public School Districts Is Decreasing While the Breadth of Differentiated Courses Offered Is Increasing

Abstract

This article presents an analysis of the participation of Texas public school districts in the Advanced Placement (AP) program for academic years ending 2013 through 2019. We develop and estimate to a panel of school district data a hurdle count model composed of: (1) a first stage fixed effect binomial logistic regression model of the probability that a school district opts-in to locally offer AP program courses in a given academic years; and (2) a second stage fixed effect zero truncated Poisson regression model of the number of unique AP courses offered in a given year by opting-in districts. We find that the number of Texas school districts providing local access to AP courses is decreasing through time; however, we also find that districts that do provide local access to AP courses offer increasingly greater numbers of unique AP courses.

2. Evaluating Students' Preferences for University Brands through Conjoint Analysis and Market Simulation

Abstract

Purpose: In recent times, many universities have been pressured to become heavily involved in university branding. The purpose of this paper is to investigate students' perceptions of different international universities (brands) in terms of important university attributes, including the country in which the university's main campus is located and educational programs are designed (COD) and the method by which the educational services are distributed internationally (DM). Design/methodology/approach: Using a conjoint simulation procedure, this paper predicts the impact that university attributes have on Malaysian and Chinese students' preferences for international universities. Findings: The results suggest that, although COD and DM are important factors, the extent to which these factors dominate student preference differs significantly across students according to nationality. Research limitations/implications: The simulation suggests how international universities can improve their branding strategies, and highlights the need to understand students' preferences when developing marketing strategies. Originality/value: Past research has compared the importance of university attributes across countries from the perspective of students, but failed to assess this issue in the light of existing university brands (at an institutional or country level). Such knowledge can provide an indication of student preferences and competitive performance, which are of great interest to education marketers. The present study predicts the impact of various university attributes on Malaysian and Chinese students' preferences for specific international universities (brands) in four different countries, and changes in preference that occur when the style of delivery or course suitability is altered.

3. Early College Credit Programs Positively Impact Student Success

Abstract

This article presents an exploratory case study examining the effects of different early college credit programs on time to baccalaureate degree attainment at a metropolitan Midwestern United States land grant university. We developed a Cox proportional hazards regression model of a students' time to degree attainment as a function of their participation in different early college credit programs while controlling for each student's preenrollment grade point average (GPA), American College Test (ACT) test score, gender, part or full-time enrollment status, ethnicity, and seasonal (Fall, Spring, or Summer) semester of initial matriculation. The most noteworthy finding of our analysis was that each early college credit program appeared to have a positive and statistically significant impact on reducing the time to degree attainment with all other factors being equal. However, the mechanisms through which these programs affect the time to degree attainment appeared to be differentiated by program.

4. Measuring the Impacts of Administrative Policies on Student Performance in Higher Education

Abstract

In this study, we investigate the joint impacts of class size, modality of content delivery and instructor workloads on 1078 student performances from 2010 through 2014 in a required College of Business Administration Information Systems (IS) course at a public Midwestern university, controlling for 11 demographic and other factors that might impact student performance. Class size, modality of delivery and instructor assignments are strategic college decisions affected by and subject to administrative policies that can impact the probabilities of student performance. Using the Akaike Information Criteria (AIC) and Chi-square significance tests, we construct a parsimonious binary logit model of individual student performance in the IS course and examine the effects of the administratively controllable factors on student performance. We find that the class size and the assignment of instructors to teach the course significantly impact student performance while modality of delivery does not. We offer and evaluate administrative policy recommendations likely to improve student performances.

Abstract

We show that the absorption spectrum in semiconducting nanotubes can be determined using the bosonization technique combined with mean-field theory and a harmonic approximation. Our results indicate that a multiple band semiconducting nanotube reduces to a system of weakly coupled harmonic oscillators. Additionally, the quasiparticle nature of the electron and hole that comprise an optical exciton emerges naturally from the bosonized model., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

We present a theory for carrier transport in semiconducting nanoscale heterostructures that emphasizes the effects of strain at the interface between two different crystal structures. An exactly solvable model shows that the interface region, or junction, acts as a scattering potential that facilitates charge separation but also supports bound interfacial states. As a case study, we model a Type-II CdS/ZnSe heterostructure. 9. Anselm’s Legacy: The Problem of Christ’s Passions in the Franciscans and Aquinas

Abstract

Abstract:This essay examines how, whether, and in what sense Christ had human passions. This question comes out of Anselm’s work, not only Cur Deus homo, but also his portrayal of the importance of the passions in his prayers and meditations, and becomes a standard question in the Latin High Middle Ages. The essay considers the role of Stoic and Aristotelian accounts of the passions as influencing Franciscan thinkers and contrasts that with the account of Christ’s passions given by Thomas Aquinas. The case of Jesus’s suffering is considered here as a reflection on the nature of the human passions (rather than Jesus’s divine nature), and where and how the passions for us mere mortals are connected to human nature vs. human sinfulness taken on, or not, by Christ as the sinless and perfect man. The essay concludes that Aquinas’ account of passions for human beings in this life and Christ during his life captures better than that of Alexander of Hales or Bonaventure what Anselm seems to be getting at, not just in his soteriology but also in his account of human passions as an essential part of spiritual awakening and growth.

10. Teacher Education Graduates at One Year Following Graduation--An Examination of Differences between Those Who Entered Teaching and Those Who Did Not.

Abstract

This study was conducted to examine the differences between teacher education graduates who entered teaching the year following graduation and those who did not. A career path model was developed and tested in order to examine the influence of various factors on the career paths of teacher education graduates at various stages. The model provided a framework for studying differences between the two groups on factors in four major areas: (1) personal and background characteristics; (2) preparation program factors; (3) employment factors; and (4) indicators of career satisfaction. Survey instruments were collected from teacher education students (N=200) at the time of graduation and again, 1 year following graduation. Results suggest significant differences between those who entered teaching and those who did not on variables in all four major areas. The career path model has proved to be useful in examining the differences between teacher education graduates in different career path groups at 1 year following graduation. 11. International Students' University Preferences: How Different Are Malaysian and Chinese Students?

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to determine factors that influenced international university preference, looking at country of origin (COO), that is the COO of the course and program modes (PMs). This study specifically focusses on differences in perceptions across students from Malaysia and China. Design/Methodology/Approach: Conjoint analysis was used to examine the relative importances and part-worth scores of these attributes on international university preferences. Findings: PM and country of design (COD) had a major influence on Malaysian and Chinese students' preferences for international universities. Online distance learning was the least preferred option, while offshore campuses were more acceptable to Malaysian students compared to Chinese students. Malaysian students preferred to study in the UK, while Chinese students favored Australia. Malaysian students were also found to be more cost sensitive compared to Chinese students, while the latter were more motivated by job prospects offered by an institution. Research Limitations/Implications: Limitations include the specific sample, pre-university students only from developed countries (Malaysia and China), which limits the generalizability to students from other countries. Practical Implications: This study offers insights in the effect of COD and PM on students' preferences for international universities, as well as other previously studied university-level attributes in a higher education setting. With a better understanding of factors affecting these preferences, higher educational institutions are better placed to implement a suitable marketing strategy to attract more international students. Originality/Value: This study examines the impact COD, Delivery Mode (DM) and other university level attributes have on Malaysian and Chinese pre-university students' preferences for international universities. COD and DM were found to be extremely important factors that dominated the students' preferences. The study highlights the need to focus on different university attributes in different markets and to consider COD and DM issues in order to gain a larger market share of international students.

12. Effects of Country and Delivery Mode on Perceived Risk in International Higher Education

Abstract

Higher education is an increasingly competitive global market. Consequently, it is crucial that universities fully understand students' motivations in university selection. While past research mainly focused on university-level attributes, this study extends the factors used to evaluate different international universities to include both the university's country and the programme's mode of delivery. Following a qualitative stage, conjoint analysis was used to examine the relative importances and part-worth utility scores of these attributes on students' perceived risk (performance, financial and social) when selecting an international university. The study found that country of origin and delivery mode contributed significantly to all three risk types, in particular to social risk. With an enhanced understanding of factors affecting these risk perceptions, higher educational marketers are better placed to implement suitable marketing strategies that minimise risk perceptions, helping to attract more international students.

14. Fast Neutron Irradiation of a Multichannel JFET-Based Optical Encoder

Abstract

Modern electrical components are susceptible to damage from high levels of radiation and extreme temperatures found near reactors in terrestrial nuclear power plants and in aerospace applications. Radiation-hardened electronics are being developed, largely for the aerospace industry, but they sometimes rely on application-specific, small-batch semiconductor fabrication processes. These processes tend to be prohibitively expensive to develop and maintain outside major industrial facilities or governmental agencies. Recently, commercially available, nonradiation-rated junction-gate field-effect transistors (JFETs) were shown to maintain their functionality at gamma doses exceeding 1 MGy, suggesting that nonrated, commercially available electrical components could be used to develop systems that are tolerant to ionizing radiation. However, gamma ray survival is not indicative of neutron dose survival, and few studies characterize JFETs under neutron irradiation. To address this knowledge gap, a JFET-based analog multiplexer and optical pulsewidth modulation (PWM) encoder was developed and irradiated using a 252Cf source to $1.6 \times 10^{13}$ n/cm2. The multiplexed optical encoder (MOE) system maintained functionality throughout testing and showed little evidence of radiation effects. These results indicate that circuitry tolerant to fast neutron damage can be developed using low-cost, nonradiation-rated, commercially available JFETs, which could provide a lower production cost alternative to specialized semiconductor processes when designing and building electronics better able to survive neutron irradiation.

19. Postpartum readmission risk: a comparison between stillbirths and live births.

Abstract

Stillbirth occurs more commonly among pregnant people with comorbid conditions and obstetrical complications. Stillbirth also independently increases maternal morbidity and imparts a psychosocial hazard when compared with live birth. These distinct needs and burden may increase the risk for postpartum readmission after stillbirth. This study aimed to examine the risk for maternal postpartum readmission after stillbirth in comparison with live birth and to identify indications for readmission and the associated risk factors. This was a retrospective cohort of patients with singleton stillbirths or live births, delivered at ≥20 weeks' gestation, who were identified from the 2019 Nationwide Readmissions Database. The primary outcome was all-cause readmission within 6 weeks of discharge from the childbirth hospitalization. The association between stillbirth (vs live birth) and risk for readmission was assessed using multivariable regression models with adjustment for maternal age, sociodemographic characteristics, maternal and obstetrical conditions, and delivery characteristics. Within the stillbirth group, risk factors for readmission were further examined using multivariable regression. The secondary outcomes included principal indication for readmission (categorized based on principal diagnosis code of the readmission hospitalization) and timing of readmission (number of weeks after childbirth hospitalization). Differences in these secondary outcomes were compared between the stillbirth and live birth groups using chi-square tests. All analyses accounted for the complex sample design to generate nationally representative estimates. Postpartum readmission occurred in 2.7% of 16,636 patients with stillbirths, whereas it occurred in 1.6% of 2,870,677 patients with live births (unadjusted risk ratio, 1.65; 95% confidence interval, 1.47–1.86). The higher risk for readmission after stillbirth (vs live birth) persisted after adjusting for maternal, obstetrical, and delivery characteristics (adjusted risk ratio, 1.27; 95% confidence interval, 1.11–1.46). The distribution of principal indication for readmission differed after stillbirth and after live birth and included hypertension (30.2% vs 39.5%; unadjusted risk ratio, 0.76; 95% confidence interval, 0.63–0.93), mental health or substance use disorders (6.8% vs 3.6%; unadjusted risk ratio, 1.90; 95% confidence interval, 1.15–3.16), and venous thromboembolism (5.8% vs 2.0%; unadjusted risk ratio, 2.87; 95% confidence interval, 1.60–5.17). Among patients with stillbirths, 56.0% of readmissions occurred within 1 week, 71.8% within 2 weeks, and 88.1% within 4 weeks; the timing of readmission did not differ significantly between the stillbirth and live birth cohorts. Pregestational diabetes (adjusted risk ratio, 1.87; 95% confidence interval, 1.20–2.93), gestational diabetes (adjusted risk ratio, 1.67; 95% confidence interval, 1.03–2.71), hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (adjusted risk ratio, 1.80; 95% confidence interval, 1.31–2.47), obesity (adjusted risk ratio, 1.46; 95% confidence interval, 1.01–2.12), and primary cesarean delivery (adjusted risk ratio, 1.74; 95% confidence interval, 1.17–2.58) were associated with a higher risk for readmission after stillbirth, whereas higher household income was associated with a lower risk for readmission (eg, adjusted risk ratio for income ≥$82,000 vs $1–$47,999, 0.48; 95% confidence interval, 0.30–0.77). When compared with live births, the risk for postpartum readmission was higher after stillbirths, even after adjustment for differences in the patient demographic and clinical characteristics. Abstract

Copyright and fair use laws that regulate educational materials seem to be fairly well understood by the U.S. courts and educators for use in face-to-face (f2f) classrooms (Post and Trempus, 1998). Ever-changing revisions to these laws blur the distinction between tangible and intangible materials shared with students in f2f, online and hybrid courses and must be decided on a case-by-case basis. As a result, educators face legal and ethical challenges as they take advantage of easy copy and paste tools in the digital medium, particularly if they want to use content from web pages they did not create. Since copying and distribution of digital content is easy, how well can we apply our understanding of these laws, or do we just infringe and ignore the law? This study determined how faculty members at a Research 1 (Carnegie) institute applied their knowledge of copyright/fair use laws to digital course content, and if they were deterred from infringement in the design of their online materials.

28. Expanding the range of the resolvable strain from distributed fiber optic sensors using a local adaptive reference approach

Abstract

Optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) is a spectral measurement technique in which shifts in the local Rayleigh backscatter spectra can be used to perform distributed temperature or strain measurements relative to a reference measurement using ordinary single-mode optical fibers. This work demonstrates a data processing methodology for improving the resolvable range of temperature and strain by adaptively varying the reference measurement position by position, based on the time evolution of the local optical intensities and the correlation between the reference and active measurements. These methods nearly double the resolvable range of temperature and strain compared with that achieved using the traditional static reference approach.

Abstract

Abstract:This paper examines the nature and role of emotions and love in Anselm’s spirituality, especially in his prayers and letters, by considering its roots in Augustine, and the development of these ideas in two 12th century figures, Hugh of St. Victor and Aelred of Rievaulx. This line of thinkers embraces emotion and love as central to human life and spirituality. They thus reject the suspicion of passion and affectivity in the Stoics but also Plato and Aristotle. That embrace of affectivity and passionate friendship only grows stronger from Augustine to Anselm and from Anselm to the 12th c. The paper focusses on two aspects of this transformation. The first is the development of a new model of friendship, in which the friend is loved in his or her particularity as an individual, a need that cannot be (and should not be) redirected but has to be satisfied. The second is that this fundamentally different attitude about affectivity is driven by a deeper shift—from the ancient philosophical attempt to avoid or overcome vulnerability to the seeking of it.

35. Emotion regulation in service encounters: are customer displays real?

Abstract

Purpose: Despite recognition of the importance of emotions and emotion regulation in service encounters, emotion regulation has been generally studied from an employee perspective. This study investigated customer emotion regulation behaviours (CEREBs) in face-to-face service encounters; arguing for a more nuanced approach through an emotion regulation matrix representing the playing up and downplaying of positive or negative emotions. Motivational factors and service-related situational conditions that influence the likelihood of emotion regulation were also examined. Design/methodology/approach: Four focus groups and the critical incident technique method were used to obtain data from people who had interacted with service employees within the previous six months. Findings: There was support for emotion regulation in the four facets of the emotion regulation matrix. Five CEREB dimensions, including verbal behaviours and facial expressions, were evident. Motivational factors and situational conditions that impacted on customer emotion regulation in service encounters were also identified. Research limitations/implications: The findings were based on two qualitative methods. A quantitative approach should be used to further validate the suggested framework. Originality/value: Most research on emotion regulation has focused on employees. We examined the phenomenon from a customer viewpoint and in a service encounter context. As customers are not bound by employment rules and conventions, a wider range of emotion regulation behaviours were found. The study used the four-faceted emotion regulation matrix to investigate this, developing a conceptual framework that provides a foundation for future research.

36. An Infrared Technique for Evaluating Turbine Airfoil Cooling Designs

Abstract

An experimental approach is used to evaluate turbine airfoil cooling designs for advanced gas turbine engine applications by incorporating double-wall film-cooled design features into large-scale flat plate specimens. An infrared (IR) imaging system is used to make detailed, two-dimensional steady-state measurements of flat plate surface temperature with spatial resolution on the order of 0.4 mm. The technique employs a cooled zinc selenide window transparent to infrared radiation and calibrates the IR temperature readings to reference thermocouples embedded in each specimen, yielding a surface temperature measurement accuracy of [+ or -] 4 [degrees] C. With minimal thermocouple installation required, the flat plate/IR approach is cost effective, essentially nonintrusive, and produces abundant results quickly. Design concepts can proceed from art to part to data in a manner consistent with aggressive development schedules. The infrared technique is demonstrated here by considering the effect of film hole injection angle for a staggered array of film cooling holes integrated with a highly effective internal cooling pattern. Heated free stream air and room temperature cooling air are used to produce a nominal temperature ratio of 2 over a range of blowing ratios from 0.7 to 1.5. Results were obtained at hole angles of 90 and 30 deg for two different hole spacings and are presented in terms of overall cooling effectiveness.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to suggest a typology of customer value cocreation activities and explore the psychological drivers and quality of life outcomes of such activities in a complex health care service setting. Design/methodology/approach: Focus groups with people with Type 2 diabetes and in-depth interviews with diabetes educators were conducted. Findings: Four types of customer value cocreation activities were found (mandatory (customer), mandatory (customer or organization), voluntary in-role and voluntary extra-role activities). In addition, health locus of control, self-efficacy, optimism, regulatory focus and expected benefits are identified as key psychological factors underlying the customers’ motivation to be active resource integrators and resulting in physical, psychological, existential and social well-being. Originality/value: The study highlights the various types of customer value cocreation activities and how these affect the various quality of life dimensions.
