Guanine-rich DNA sequences may fold back into non-canonical four-stranded secondary structures termed as G-quadruplexes. The role of G-quadruplexes has already been well established in different diseases like cancer, neurological and viral disorders etc. Also, several small molecules have been reported, which can influence the involvement of G-quadruplexes either through stabilization or destabilization in the cellular environment. Growing statistics have associated G-quadruplex assemblies to a discrete biological process in vivo, including DNA replication, transcription, genomic stability, and epigenetic regulation. DNA G-quadruplex existence in human telomere is well recognized attractive target for anticancer drugs. G-quadruplex-interactive ligands have been known to prevent telomerase access as well as telomere capping. To the best of our understanding, the role of G-quadruplexes in virology, neuropharmacology, cancer progression and its treatment has not been discussed on a single platform till date. This review aims to enhance our knowledge regarding these magical sticky quadruplex structures, which have been quite significantly proved to be the part of many cellular processes along with their established in vivo existence. Understanding regarding stabilizing or destabilizing ligands of these multistranded guanine quadruplex structures might be proved as the facilitator of drug discovery process for many incurable diseases in future.

PurposeCOVID-19 pandemic has overturned the work and family life challenging the world in unpredictable ways that were previously unimaginable. With universities shutting down and emergence of online classes, this phenomenon is prevalent among academicians as well. With this background, the current study aims to investigate the direct relationships between workplace isolation (WPI) during COVID-19 and work–family conflict (WFC) with psychological stress (PS) mediating and organizational identification (OI) moderating the relationship between the two.Design/methodology/approachThe authors employed time lagged survey and collected data at three different time intervals (T1, T2, T3) from 203 academicians working across various universities and colleges in India. The data were analyzed quantitatively using SPSS PROCESS Macro and AMOS.FindingsThe results indicated that WPI during COVID-19 has a significant positive relationship with PS and WFC . It was also found that PS partially mediated the relationship between WPI during COVID-19 and WFC. Further, OI emerged as a potential moderator.Originality/valueBased on the current empirical studies, it remains unclear if WPI during COVID-19 is associated with WFC. Therefore, drawing upon stress–strain–outcome (SSO) model and the conservation of resource theory, this study makes a significant contribution to the existing body of literature by exploring the unexplored associations. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, such an association has not received much scholarly attention before.

Motivated by the recent excitement around the physics of twisted transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) multilayer systems, we study strongly correlated phases of TMD heterobilayers under the influence of light. We consider both waveguide light and circularly polarized light. The former allows for longitudinally polarized light, which in the high frequency limit can be used to selectively modify interlayer hoppings in a tight-binding model. We argue based on quasi-degenerate perturbation theory that changes to the interlayer hoppings can be captured as a modulation to the strength of the moir\'e potential in a continuum model. As a consequence, waveguide light can be used to drive transitions between a myriad of different magnetic phases, including a transition from a $120^\circ$ Neel phase to a stripe ordered magnetic phase, or from a spin density wave phase to a paramagnetic phase, among others. When the system is subjected to circularly polarized light we find that the effective mass of the active TMD layer is modified by an applied electromagnetic field. By simultaneously applying waveguide light and circularly polarized light to a system, one has a high level of control in moving through the phase diagram in-situ. Lastly, we comment on the experimental feasibility of Floquet state preparation and argue that it is within reach of available techniques when the system is coupled to a judiciously chosen bath., Comment: J. Herein, this work scrutinises the charge transport properties of solution-processed methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI 3 ) perovskite-based hole only device through the DC current-voltage and AC impedance spectroscopy analysis. The device shows a significant increase in the current levels under illumination. Key diode parameters were estimated from the dark I-V curves. The dominance of Ohm's law at low bias, space charge limited conduction (SCLC) followed trap controlled SCLC at higher applied bias was observed from charge transport analysis. From the region dominated by the trap free SCLC, the hole mobility of 4.02 × 10 -6 cm 2 V -1 s -1 inside the perovskite layer was extracted. The measured impedance spectrum was analysed by fitting it with the equivalent circuit model, and the various physical parameters, such as charge transport resistance, recombination resistance and associated capacitance were approximated for the device.

Moir\'e materials, and in particular twisted bilayer graphene (TBG), exhibit a range of fascinating phenomena, that emerge from the interplay of band topology and interactions. We show that the non-linear second-order photoresponse is an appealing probe of this rich interplay. A dominant part of the photoresponse is the shift-current, which is determined by the geometry of the electronic wavefunctions and carrier properties, and thus becomes strongly modified by electron-electron interactions. We analyze its dependence on the twist angle and doping, and investigate the role of interactions. In the absence of interactions, the response of the system is dictated by two energy scales: the mean energy of direct transitions between the hole and electron flat bands, and the gap between flat and dispersive bands. Including electron-electron interactions, both enhance the response at the non-interacting characteristic frequencies as well as produce new resonances. We attribute these changes to the filling-dependent band renormalization in TBG. Our results highlight the connection between non-trivial geometric properties of TBG and its optical response, as well as demonstrate how optical probes can access the role of interactions in moi\'re materials.

Humidity control is an important environmental concern in storage, transport, and preservation operations in agriculture, food, medical, and other industrial fields. In the present work, we prepared a nanocomposite having flower shaped morphology that consists of metal (Cu) nanoparticles, a metal oxide (ZnO nanorods), and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) with a one-pot synthesis method for the AC conductivity and Humidity sensing response studies at room temperature. The morphology of the nanocomposite was characterized by using XRD, SEM, EDX, and TEM analysis. Conduction in the nanocomposite due to the hopping mechanism was confirmed by studying the power law behavior of its AC conductivity. The nanocomposite shows a maximum sensing response of 97.79% in the range of 11–97% RH, with response and recovery times of 19 s and 42 s, respectively. The nanocomposite shows a low humidity hysteresis and stable humidity sensing ability. The possible humidity sensing mechanism is discussed in detail. Our results show that the nanocomposite having flower shaped morphology is an ideal candidate for building MEMS/NEMS humidity sensors.

The present research work aimed to development of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and ZnO nanorods based rZN nanocomposite with different molar ratios. This nanocomposite was prepared using a simple, one-step thermal reaction method. The morphology, phase identification and crystalline properties of the nanocomposites were studied using SEM, TEM, SAED and XRD techniques. Further, EDS analysis was used for elemental conformation of the nanocomposite. Films of the nanocomposite were deposited on a substrate by the cost-effective spin coating technique and the resistivity was measured by a Hall measurement system, which shows a decrease in resistivity value. The electrochemical properties studied by measuring the specific capacitance using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and galvanostatic charge–discharge techniques in 3 M KOH solution. These CV studies indicated that the positive synergistic effect of rGO and ZnO nanorods has shown excellent performance. The best results were obtained from the 1:2 ratio of rGO: ZnO, which demonstrated a specific capacitance of 472 F/g, an energy density of 2.62 Wh/kg, and a power density of 32.24 W/kg. These results concluded that rZN nanocomposites are promising electrode materials for supercapacitor applications.

Background: With the advent of changes in lifestyle of people all around the world, cancer cases have been showing an exponential rise. Researchers from varied fields have been trying to solve this tricky issue. Methods: We undertook a systematic search of bibliographic databases of peer-reviewed research literature to evaluate the holistic blend of modern and traditional approaches, especially the Ayurvedic perspective of treatment of cancer along with the effect of our diet and lifestyle on the management (both prevention and cure) of cancer. Results: On the basis of extensive literature survey, it was found that Ayurveda as one of the ancient medicinal systems had been very well documented for utilizing its best practices for the treatment of various diseases including cancer, by utilization of several herbal plants and dietary interventions as therapeutics. Active components present in various herbs, which interfere with certain molecular targets to inhibit carcinogenesis are also summarized. Further, beneficial effects of yoga and exercise on psychological distress, cancer-related fatigue and global side-effects as well as their mechanism of action are also discussed. In addition, we recapitulate an upcoming field of Ayurgenomics to understand the possible correlation of Prakriti with genetics as well as epigenetics. Conclusion: Both genetic as well as environmental factors have shown their linkage with cancer. Substantial advancements in the field of targeted therapies have opened new horizons for the cancer patients. To fight with this grave situation, a combination of ancient and modern medicinal systems seems to be the need of the hour.

This study aimed to estimate the gender differences, family size and fertility rate among patients with Bipolar disorder (BD). 219 patients diagnosed with BD, who were married for at least 3 years and aged more than 25 years were assessed clinically for the course of illness as per the NIMH-life chart. Fertility and infertility were assessed based on the information on number of living children, abortions and medical termination of pregnancies. Significantly higher proportion of male patients had comorbid substance dependence while females had significantly higher prevalence of physical comorbidity. Additionally, female participants reported significantly higher mean number of depressive episodes per year of illness and suicidal attempts. When marriage was considered as a life event and its association with onset or relapse of illness was evaluated, about one-fourth (23.3%) of the study sample reported relapse of illness at the time of marriage or immediately following the marriage. About one-fourth (24.7%) of the couple with one of the partner having bipolar disorder had no living children even after four years of their marriage. To conclude, this study suggests that there are certain gender differences with regard to the clinical profile and longitudinal course of illness of BD.

Several limitations of conventional cancer treatment such as non-specific targeting, solubility problems, and ineffective entry of chemotherapeutics into cancer cells can be overcome by using nanotechnology targeted drug delivery systems. Some combinations of biomolecules and nanoparticles have proven to be excellent therapeutics for Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in the last decades. Targeted gene delivery has shown in vivo as well as in vitro promising results with therapeutic efficacy. Gene therapy has shown enhanced transfection efficiency and better targeting potential on several NSCLC cell lines. Still, there are several challenges in nanoparticle-mediated gene therapy, which include stability of biomolecules and nanoparticles during delivery, managing their biodistribution, and reducing the possible cytotoxic effects of the nanoparticles, which need to be solved before clinical trials. Evaluation of therapeutic efficacy of biomolecules and nanoparticle combination in gene therapy must be established to expand the application of nano-gene therapy in cancer treatment.

Agriculture forms the basis of the modern settled human society. For agriculture, to keep pace with an exponentially growing population and demands, humans began widespread use of crop monoculture (growing single crop at a time); by using selective breeding and genetically modified crops in the past century. However, their use has reached almost a saturation point, where increased resource allocation onto fields is not translating to proportional higher yields. Moreover, monoculture by any means has made modern agroecosystems susceptible to pests and diseases, due to their uniformity. Also, it places heavy burden on input resources, particularly water for irrigation. Nanotechnology is a promising field, which is only recently getting applied to the field of agriculture in various capacities; including but not limited to detection and remediation of soil conditions, plant diseases and pathogens, and preventing premature loss of soil moisture. Some of these issues pose a grave danger to the monoculture dominated agriculture presently. This chapter aims to discuss some of the agricultural problem, nanotechnology-based management of plant diseases and retention of soil moisture. However, more research is needed in the long-term stability, environmental fate and toxicity of such nanoformulations before their widespread use can be considered for accomplishing sustainable agriculture.

A significant shift towards sustainable agriculture has been observed in the past decade in order to address the nutritional security of global population along with a focus on minimizing environmental impact as much as possible. This can be achieved by using nanotechnology in agriculture field mainly in the form of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs)-based nano-fertilizers and nano-pesticides. This is due to the fact that very small amount of conventional fertilizers actually reach the targeted site, which can be due to leaching of chemicals, microbial degradation, run-off, evaporation or hydrolysis. These fertilizers in excess amount severely affect the nutrient equilibrium of the soil. Unlike conventional agrochemicals, ENPs-based nano-fertilizers and nano-pesticides have increased selectivity, gradual release dynamics and resistance to physiochemical degradation. This reduces the environmental accumulation and thus, ill effects on the agro-ecosystem. The use of these nano-agrochemicals also improves the crop productivity by increasing the availability of nutrients in soil and their uptake by plants. These nano-materials can reduce the occurrence of crop diseases by acting upon pathogens directly, through several mechanisms. This chapter elaborates on the role of ENPs-based nano-fertilizers and nano-pesticides in the growth of plants. It also elucidates various types, mechanisms, benefits and potential applications of such novel nano-agrochemicals, which are necessary to attain more sustainable agriculture practices.

For systems with spatial and nonspatial symmetries, the topological classification depends not only on these symmetries but also on the commutation/anticommutation relations between spatial and nonspatial symmetries. The coexistence of spatial and nonspatial symmetries together with appropriate commutation/anticommutation relations between them can give rise to crystalline and higher-order topological phases, which host gapless boundary modes. Alternatively, space-time symmetries in a Floquet system can take the role of spatial symmetries in deciding the topological classification. Promoting a spatial symmetry to a space-time symmetry can alter the commutation relations, which in turn can modify the topological properties of the system. We show how a coherently excited phonon mode can be used to promote a spatial symmetry with which the static system is always trivial to a space-time symmetry which supports a nontrivial Floquet topological phase. We demonstrate this effect by considering two systems: The first is a second-order topological superconductor, and the second is a first-order crystalline topological insulator. In both these cases, a coherently excited phonon mode is responsible for promoting the reflection symmetry to a time-glide symmetry. This newly introduced symmetry allows the previously trivial system to host gapless modes. In the first case, these are protected corner modes, while in the second case, these are gapless edge modes.

Wastes produced during food processing in day to day life can cause environmental pollution if not managed properly. One of the best methods to overcome such a problem is to convert this wastage into compost, which can strengthen our ecosystem. However, it may not be possible to convert it into compost every time and thus an alternate process is the need of time. In this regard, the present research work proposed a green synthesis pyrolysis method for ternary-doped layered graphene nanosheets (DGNS) from onion peel wastage. This synthesis process is economically feasible and easily scalable. Further, synthesized DGNS have been analyzed with various characterizations. Finally, electrochemical studies have been also performed to analyze DGNS for energy storage applications. The highest capacitance attained using synthesized materials is 450 A g−1 at 1 A g−1 current density with 2 M H2SO4 electrolytic solution. These results indicated that DGNS are suitable electrode material for high-performance supercapacitors.

Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSCs) are prominent alternative devices to conventional p-n junction silicon based solar cells because of their low fabrication cost and high power conversion efficiency, good cost/efficiency ratio. In the present work, DSSC devices were made-up with fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) glass substrate, a TiO2 compact layer was deposited on FTO, Ruthenium(II) dye (N719), an iodide - triiodide electrolyte and a platinum (Pt) counter electrode. Photo anode with thin film layers of TiO2 and Pt counter electrode (photo-cathode) were prepared. Field emission electron microscope (FESEM) was employed to investigate the surface morphology of TiO2 layers. The DSSC device efficiency was evaluated by J-V characteristics. Fabricated devices were exhibited high power conversion efficiencies. The electrochemical impedance characteristics were analyzed by fitting the experimental results to the corresponding electrical equivalent circuit simulated data.

Excitons are neutral objects, that, naively, should have no response to a uniform, electric field. Could the Berry curvature of the underlying electronic bands alter this conclusion? In this work, we show that Berry curvature can indeed lead to anomalous transport for excitons in 2D materials subject to a uniform, in-plane electric field. By considering the constituent electron and hole dynamics, we demonstrate that there exists a regime for which the corresponding anomalous velocities are in the same direction. We establish the resulting center of mass motion of the exciton through both a semiclassical and fully quantum mechanical analysis, and elucidate the critical role of Bloch oscillations in achieving this effect. In the present work, we reported the preparation of ZnO/PANI/RGO ternary nanocomposite by physical blending method and its photocatalytic efficiency of degradation of methyl orange under solar light. The samples were characterized by XRD, FTIR and UV–Vis spectroscopy. Optical band gap was calculated using Tauc plot for ZnO, PANI and RGO. The photocatalytic studies were evaluated using Methyl Orange with a degradation rate of 99% in 50 min. It is observed that photocatalytic efficiency enhanced by PANI (wt%). The PANI has the ability to create more charge carriers and delay the recombination process. The kinetic studies fitted to pseudo first order reaction. The nanocomposite acts as a promising photocatalyst for the removal of organic pollutants from water.

Sequence recognition and conformational polymorphism enable DNA to emerge out as a substantial tool in fabricating the devices within nano-dimensions. These DNA associated nano devices work on the principle of conformational switches, which can be facilitated by many factors like sequence of DNA/RNA strand, change in pH or temperature, enzyme or ligand interactions etc. Thus, controlling these DNA conformational changes to acquire the desired function is significant for evolving DNA hybridization biosensor, used in genetic screening and molecular diagnosis. For exploring this conformational switching ability of cytosine-rich DNA oligonucleotides as a function of pH for their potential usage as biosensors, this study has been designed. A C-rich stretch of DNA sequence (5'-TCCCCCAATTAATTCCCCCA-3'; SG20c) has been investigated using UV-Thermal denaturation, poly-acrylamide gel electrophoresis and CD spectroscopy. The SG20c sequence is shown to adopt various topologies of i-motif structure at low pH. This pH dependent transition of SG20c from unstructured single strand to unimolecular and bimolecular i-motif structures can further be exploited for its utilization as switching on/off pH-based biosensors.

A gradual dementia, which leads to the loss of memory and intellectual abilities, is the main characteristics of Alzheimer's disease. Amyloid-β (Aβ) plaques are the main components that accumulate and form clumps in the brains of people suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Apolipoprotein E (APOE), an amyloid-binding protein is considered as one of the main genetic risk factor of the late-onset Alzheimer's disease. Different isoforms of APOE gene named APOE2, APOE3, and APOE4 are known to exist, which differ from each other at certain positions involving single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Out of these isoforms, APOE4 increases the risk of developing late-onset Alzheimer's disease, whereas APOE3 is the most common among the general population. APOE4 differs from the common APOE3 by only one nucleotide at position +2985 (T to C), which results in immense alteration in the structure and function of the APOE gene. A combination of gel electrophoresis (polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, PAGE), circular dichroism (CD), CD melting, thermal difference spectra and UV-thermal denaturation (TM) techniques was used to investigate the structural polymorphism associated with T → C single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) at the GC-rich sequence (d-TGGAGGACGTGTGCGGCCGCCT; APOE22T). Herein, we report that APOE22T DNA sequence switches between hairpin to antiparallel quadruplex from low to high oligomer concentration. On the contrary, its C-counterpart (APOE22C) forms hairpin as well as intermolecular antiparallel duplex structure. This structural change may possibly contribute to the protein recognition pattern, which, in turn, might control the APOE gene expression.

A huge number of G-rich sequences forming quadruplexes are found in the human genome, especially in telomeric regions, UTRs, and the promoter regions of a number of genes. One such gene is GRIN1 encoding the NR1 subunit of the N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDA). Several lines of reports have implicated that attenuated function of NMDA results in schizophrenia, a genetic disorder characterized by hallucinations, delusions, and psychosis. Involvement of the GRIN1 gene in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia has been extensively analysed. Recent reports have demonstrated that polymorphism in the promoter region of GRIN1 at position -855 (G/C) has a possible association with schizophrenia. The binding site for the NF-κB transcription factor gets altered due to this mutation, resulting in reduced gene expression as well as NMDA activity. By combining gel electrophoresis (PAGE), circular dichroism (CD) and CD melting techniques, the G → C single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) at the G-rich sequence (d-CTTAGCCCGAGGAG[combining low line]GGGGGTCCCAAGT; GRIN1) was investigated. We report that the GRIN1 sequence can form an octameric/multistranded quadruplex structure with parallel conformation in the presence of K+ as well as Na+. CD and gel studies are in good correlation in order to detect molecularity and strand conformation. The parallel G-quadruplex species was hypothesized to be octameric in K+/Na+ salts. The mutated sequence (d-CTTAGCCCGAGGAC[combining low line]GGGGGTCCCAAGT; GRIN1M) remained single stranded under physiological conditions. CD melting studies support the formation of an interstranded G-quadruplex structure by the GRIN1 sequence. Two structural models are propounded for a multistranded parallel G-quadruplex conformation which might be responsible for regulating the gene expression normally underlying memory and learning.

Earlier, Vitamin D was implicated in bone health as it promotes the intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphates. Vitamin D is considered important for bone and mineral metabolism. Various guidelines suggest a daily intake of 5-15 ?g of vitamin D. Approximately 90 % of vitamin D is generated in our body and the remaining 10 % comes from dietary intake. The deficiency of Vitamin d has been found to be linked with distinct biological processes in recent years. The improper vitamin D metabolism is responsible for various health problems including cancer. In the present review, the role of vitamin D in cancer and its prevention has been discussed. The anti-cancer effects of vitamin D involving several mechanisms such as apoptosis, anti-inflammatory, anti-angiogenesis, anti-proliferative, inhibiting invasive and metastasis, etc. are also investigated in this review.

We present a scheme to control the spin-exchange interactions by manipulating the orbital degrees of freedom using a periodic drive. We discuss two different protocols for orbital Floquet engineering. In one case, a periodic drive modifies the properties of the ligand orbitals which mediate magnetic interactions between transition-metal ions. In the other case, we consider drive-induced mixing of $d$ orbitals on each magnetic ion. We first find that an AC Stark shift of orbitals induces a change comparable to that induced from photoinduced hopping schemes, but expands the applicable frequency ranges. Next, we find that radiatively induced coherent vibrations provide a realistic path for Floquet orbital engineering with short pulses of electric fields weaker than 0.5 V/\AA{} producing $5%--10%$ changes in the magnetic coupling of Mott insulators such as the rare-earth titanates.

Directly modifying spin exchange energies in a magnetic material with light can enable ultrafast control of its magnetic states. Current approaches rely on tuning charge hopping amplitudes that mediate exchange by optically exciting either virtual or real charge-transfer transitions (CT) between magnetic sites. Here we show that when exchange is mediated by a non-magnetic ligand, it can be substantially enhanced by optically exciting a real CT transition from the ligand to magnetic site, introducing lower order virtual hopping contributions. We demonstrate sub-picosecond enhancement in a superexchange dominated ferromagnet CrSiTe3 through this mechanism using phase-resolved coherent phonon spectroscopy. This technique can also be applied in the paramagnetic phase to disentangle light induced exchange modification from other ultrafast effects that alter the magnetization. The recent advancements in living standards impose massive pressure on existing energy resources such as fossil fuels. Also, the increasing number of inhabitants arises the need to develop eco-friendly and sustainable energy storage systems. In this regard, a large number of researchers have paid increasing attention to the different methods for sustainable energy like the use of solar cells, LEDs, energy-efficient electronic devices, and supercapacitor technology. Since supercapacitors belong to the class of energy storage systems that provides high capacitive performance and charging-discharging stability during long cycles. They also offer higher power density than batteries and higher energy density than capacitors. Since the selection of electrode material and its electrochemical performance is the most determined parameter for supercapacitor performance. The present review focuses on the different types of aqueous electrolyte based electrode material which is differentiated based on energy storage mechanisms for aqueous supercapacitors. Furthermore, the latest nanocomposites reported have been reviewed and differentiated based on their electrochemical performance for aqueous supercapacitor applications. Their future implications have also been discussed.

Exploring the cost-effective alternative materials to replace the synthetic dyes for application in dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC) could help in reducing the overall cost of the devices. Herein, we investigate two cost-effective textile dyes, namely hot reactive dye and vat dye for application in the DSSC. Morphology, domain size, and crystalline phase of the TiO2 nanoparticles in dye loaded TiO2 films are examined in detail by FESEM and X-ray diffraction measurements. Modifications in the absorption spectra of dyes upon adsorption into TiO2 are investigated by UV–Vis analysis. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis allows us to identify the various functional groups present in the dyes. By comparing the photovoltaic performance, we found that hot reactive dye based DSSC yield power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 1.20%, which is significantly higher than the vat dye based DSSC (0.51%). This is mainly due to superior short-circuit current density (Jsc) and open circuit voltage generated in the hot reactive dye relative to the vat dye based DSSC. The higher Jsc in the hot reactive dye-based device is mainly attributed to the favorable morphology, better crystallinity and superior absorption features of hot reactive dye coated TiO2 film. However, a slightly less fill factor is noticed for hot reactive dye-based devices owing to the lesser shunt resistance in comparison to the vat dye-based device. Although the PCE attained by these devices is far below that of standard DSSC, the present study can be helpful in the development of more eco-friendly and cost-effective solar cells.
