Archaeologia Aeliana, 48, 157-168, There is no firm evidence for the identification of the so-called Acca's cross with the cross which, according to the 12th century Hexham interpolation in Symeon's Historia Regum, stood at the head of the bishop's grave. There are, indeed, serious doubts about the genuineness of the interpolator's information. Even if there was a cross over Acca's grave there are no reasons for linking this with the present monument by arguments based upon the find spots of the fragments, the inscription or the decoration. The inscription has been largely illegible since its discovery in 1858. It seems to have begun with some version of the title Alpha et Omega. The second line began with SC, and in what were probably lines 17 and 18 there are indications of a phrase which can be identified with one in the Nicene Creed. R N B

A personal view is offered of a recent development in teaching English Medieval Studies at the University of Exeter in which the entire curriculum was reconstructed to deal more effectively with the character and needs of the undergraduate in the 1970s. (LBH)

La desaparición casi completa de esta unidad entre los años 1950 y nuestros días provocó una reorganización del sistema de unidades modales-aspectuales de la lengua., La communication traitait de l'évolution du système verbal de l'ixcatèque (ISO-639 code: IXC) et notamment de la dynamique d'une unité dite "Médiatif", largement disparue des usages actuels, qui avait pour valeur générale d'indiquer que l'information rapportée par le locuteurs était connue de manière indirecte, par ouï-dire notamment. La disparition quasi complète de cette unité entre les années 1950 et nos jours a entraîné une réorganisation du système aspecto-modal de la langue.

Medieval Archaeology, 13, 211-214, A fragmentary rune-stone, probably discovered during excavations in 1870 at Victoria Cave, carries the text oframr. The runes are of Viking type and are most closely paralleled among the inscriptions at Maeshowe, Orkney, where stone XI has the same personal name (recorded only once elsewhere) and uses an idiosyncratic form of the ma�r-rune whose only other occurrence is on the Settle stone. Since James Farrer, who discovered the Maeshowe runes in 1861, lived at Ingleton near Settle there must inevitably be a suspicion that the runes were carved on a piece of slate from the cave in recent times, but such a suggestion is not entirely convincing.
