6. Dispersal patterns and seed bank dynamics of pioneer trees in moist tropical forest

Abstract

Seed dispersal patterns and seed persistence in the soil should strongly influence the distribution of pioneer tree recruits in gaps. Nonetheless, seed distribution patterns for pioneers are poorly known, and processes controlling the fate of seeds in the soil have been little explored. We examined patterns of seed rain, seed abundance in the soil, and seed mortality of two common pioneer trees, Miconia argentea (Melastomataceae) and Cecropia insignis (Moraceae), on Barro Colorado Island, Panama. For each species, we selected four isolated, reproductive trees within a 50-ha forest dynamics plot. Seed rain and soil seed bank samples were collected, respectively, in mesh traps and from soil cores sampled along transects radiating away from the tree crowns. At below-crown sites, seed rain inputs far exceeded soil seed bank densities measured at the end of the fruiting season. For Miconia, the below-crown seed bank in the surface 3 cm of soil accounted for only 23% of seed rain, and for Cecropia, only 2%. However for Miconia, at distances >5 m from the crown seed bank densities exceeded the annual seed rain input. For both species log seed densities in the seed bank declined linearly with log distance from the crown and also decreased dramatically through the year. The annual loss rate of Miconia seeds was >90% below the crown and declined to 65% at 30 m from the crown. The annual loss rate for Cecropia was >90% at all distances. Seed losses in the seed bank could be largely attributed to mortality from pathogenic fungi. Fungicide treatment significantly increased seed survival in the soil for both species. For these two gap-dependent pioneer species, rapid seed-bank turnover rates and logarithmic declines in soil seed density with distance from adults suggested that both the spatial distribution and timing of gap formation may have influenced their chances of successful gap colonization. Recruitment from distant seed sources, or from seeds surviving in the soil after the death of the parent tree, may be relatively rare for these species. Abstract

The sensitivity of tropical forest carbon to climate is a key uncertainty in predicting global climate change. Although short-term drying and warming are known to affect forests, it is unknown if such effects translate into long-term responses. Here, we analyze 590 permanent plots measured across the tropics to derive the equilibrium climate controls on forest carbon. Maximum temperature is the most important predictor of aboveground biomass (-9.1 megagrams of carbon per hectare per degree Celsius), primarily by reducing woody productivity, and has a greater impact per °C in the hottest forests (>32.2°C). Our results nevertheless reveal greater thermal resilience than observations of short-term variation imply. To realize the long-term climate adaptation potential of tropical forests requires both protecting them and stabilizing Earth's climate.

Abstract

1 Forest species in West Africa show clear distribution patterns in relation to the principal rainfall gradient and associated soil fertility gradient in the region. The distribution of each species presumably reflects environmental limitation of seedling establishment, but the segregation of seasonal drought or soil conditions as controlling factors is obscured because soil nutrient availability and rainfall strongly covary. 2 Frequency of occurrence of individual species in four categories based on rainfall and a composite fertility variable are compared with the distribution of all samples. Four possible groups of species are identified, each showing a bias to one of the four site categories: dry-fertile, wet-fertile, dry-infertile and wet-infertile. A fifth group of species include those whose distribution is not significantly different from that of all sample sites. 3 Apart from the indifferent species, the wet-infertile group includes the majority of the tree species tested, including two ectomycorrhizal legumes; the wet and dry fertile groups are notable for the inclusion of deciduous Sterculiaceae. 1 Soil and plant-water relations were studied in a canopy opening and surrounding forest shade in a moist tropical forest in Ghana using seedlings of two tree species with different regeneration strategies, the pioneer Terminalia superba and the non-pioneer light demander Entandrophragma utile. 2 During two consecutive dry seasons, soil matric potential varied from -30 kPa at the end of the rainy season, to below -2.5 MPa in the middle of the dry season. During part of the first dry season soil matric potential was higher in the gap than in the surrounding forest. In the second dry season no differences were observed. 3 Leaf water potential varied from about -750 kPa at dawn for unstressed seedlings of both species to < -2.5 MPa when seedlings were permanently wilted. For both species, the maximum stomatal conductance of unstressed seedlings varied from 300 to 450 mmol [m.sup.-2] [s.sup.-1] for those in the gap centre to 150 mmol [m.sup.-2] [s.sup.-1] for those under forest shade. Maximum conductance decreased to between 10 and 30 mmol [m.sup.-2] [s.sup.-1] in drought-stressed seedlings during the middle of the dry season. The two species responded similarly to a drying soil profile but the decrease in leaf water potential and stomatal conductance was more rapid under forest canopy than in the centre of the gap. 4 Only 7% of the seedlings of Terminalia superba and 4% of Entandrophragma utile survived the dry season under forest shade. In contrast, 85% and 78%, respectively, survived of those growing in the centre of the forest gap. At all positions, seedlings of T. superba had larger relative height growth rates during the wet season than E. utile (29.6, 21.4 and 8.4% [month.sup.-1] compared with 5.2, 20.0 and 1.6% [month.sup.-1], for gap centre, margin and forest shade, respectively). 5 The observed changes in leaf water potential and stomatal conductance indicated that despite the reduced irradiance, shaded seedlings experienced more drought stress during the dry season than seedlings growing in the forest gap. The reasons for this and possible consequences for trees which differ in leaf phenology and regeneration strategy are discussed. Abstract

1 Milicia regia (Moraceae) is a dioecious light-demanding (Pioneer) timber tree of West Africa. Experiments in shadehouses were used to examine the influence of light and soil source (beneath and away from conspecific adults) on mortality and growth of its seedlings in relation to fungal pathogens and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) colonization. 2 The experiment in Ghana included treatments for light (2% and 20% of unshaded irradiance), three soil sources (under female, under male and 200 m distant from adults), and two different fungicide treatments. 3 The results showed significant effects of irradiance, soil source and fungicide on both seedling mortality and accumulated biomass. Biomass was greater and mortality reduced at higher irradiance. Fungicide application reduced mortality in 2% irradiance, but had no significant effects at 20%, although AM infection of seedlings grown in soils from beneath adults was severely reduced. Mortality was greatest in soil from beneath female trees and least in soil distant from adult conspecifics. However, biomass in 20% irradiance was greater in soil from beneath females, possibly because of enhanced AM colonization: seedlings had a significantly higher percentage root length colonized by AM fungi beneath adult conspecifics, and biomass accumulation was significantly correlated with root length colonized by AM fungi. 4 There were significant interactions amongst light, soil source and fungicide treatments that attest to the complexity of spatial effects on seedling establishment in tropical forest. Whilst there was clear evidence of pathogen-mediated effects that provides support for Janzen-Connell spacing mechanisms, and escape from the parent tree increases the chances of arriving in gaps, spatial differences in AM fungal communities may act in the opposite direction and enhance seedling growth close to adult conspecifics. 5 The complexity of interactions between abiotic and biotic factors and the way in which these factors can vary spatially to affect seedling recruitment may be an important factor contributing to the maintenance of tree species diversity in tropical forests.

Abstract

The rainforests of Upper Guinea extend from Senegal to Togo and are separated from the rest of the West African forest by the Dahomey Gap: an extension of savannah from the Sahel to the Gulf of Guinea. The Upper Guinea forest zone harbours a large number of animal and plant species, and has been earmarked as one of the world's hotspots of diversity. This region is under threat, however, from conversion for agriculture and from logging, and is becoming increasingly fragmented. This introductory chapter presents an overview of the book and examines the climbers of the West African forests, particularly those of Upper Guinea, including their role in the forest ecosystem.

Miliciaspecies(M. excelsaandM. regia, Moraceae, theirokos) are among the most useful indigenous rain forest treespecies in Africa. They are not grown in plantations but extractedfrom the natural forest at an unsustainable rate. The majorconstraint on cultivation and afforestation is thegall-forming insect Phytolyma lata, whichdestroys seedlings through gall formation, causing dieback of theshoot. Genetic diversity studies should aid the design ofconservation and resistance-breeding strategies. This study,therefore, aimed to investigate the genetic variability inMiliciafrom three West African countries andthe power of bulk-family DNA in partitioning of geneticdiversity. Genetic variation within and between 5 natural populationsof Miliciafrom Ghana, Côte d'Ivoireand Sierra Leone was investigated using random amplified polymorphicDNA (RAPD) and non-coding chloroplast DNAsequencing. RAPD analysis of 41 DNA samples with 8 primers produced atotal of 74 bands with 40 bands (54.1%) beingpolymorphic. Dendrogram analysis produced 2 major clusters separatingdry and moist/wet ecotypes. Sub-clustering furtherseparated accessions by forest type and/or geographic region. Agreater proportion of the total genetic variability was attributed tovariation between populations (62.2%) than withinpopulations (37.8%). Sequencing of chloroplasttRNALeuintron (cptrnL) and intergenic spacer(cpIGS) between cptrnL and tRNAPhe(trnF) did not show any variation. The RAPD analysissuggests that trees from wet/moist sites are mostlyM. regia, while those fromdry sites are mostly M.excelsa. Sequencing results, however, suggestthat the two species are closely related. These results are discussedwith reference to conservation strategies.

Abstract

The latitudinal diversity gradient (LDG) is one of the most recognized global patterns of species richness exhibited across a wide range of taxa. Numerous hypotheses have been proposed in the past two centuries to explain LDG, but rigorous tests of the drivers of LDGs have been limited by a lack of high-quality global species richness data. Here we produce a high-resolution (0.025° × 0.025°) map of local tree species richness using a global forest inventory database with individual tree information and local biophysical characteristics from ~1.3 million sample plots. We then quantify drivers of local tree species richness patterns across latitudes. Generally, annual mean temperature was a dominant predictor of tree species richness, which is most consistent with the metabolic theory of biodiversity (MTB). However, MTB underestimated LDG in the tropics, where high species richness was also moderated by topographic, soil and anthropogenic factors operating at local scales. Given that local landscape variables operate synergistically with bioclimatic factors in shaping the global LDG pattern, we suggest that MTB be extended to account for co-limitation by subordinate drivers. Abstract

SynopsisThis chapter sets out to give a historical overview of the African rain forest from its origins, towards the end of the Cretaceous period. The areas around the Gulf of Guinea, in particular from Ivory Coast to Nigeria and especially Cameroon, Gabon and Congo, appear to have been already occupied at this time by wet tropical forest formations mainly composed of Angiosperms which were then becoming established. In the course of the Tertiary period the combined effect of the equator being situated further north than now and the development of the Antarctic ice cap favoured the development of wet tropical conditions over a large part of North Africa which in turn led to the extension of tropical forest to various sites on the shores of the Tethys Sea. There were probably at this time common taxa and similar vegetation patterns stretching from the Gulf of Guinea to the Tethys Sea.Towards the end of the Tertiary, the equator reached its present position and the northern hemisphere ice caps appeared, and these phenomena resulted in the disappearance of the forest formations spread across the north of Africa, and the concentration of these formations near the equatorial zone around the Gulf of Guinea and in the Congo–Zaïre basin. From 800 000 years ago onwards the marked glacial variations at middle and high latitudes in both hemispheres, with a periodicity of about 100 000 years determined by the orbital variations of the earth around the sun, lowered temperatures in equatorial areas and brought arid climates at times of maximum glacial extension. The most arid periods resulted in the fragmentation of the forest cover, and the forest biotopes and their biodiversity were preserved in a series of refugia. The lowering of temperatures also resulted in the extension of montane flora to low altitudes, with migration of montane flora and fauna between main mountain ranges. These compounded phenomena of isolation and migration, probably involving genie exchange, must have resulted in numerous speciation phenomena. Subsequently, such montane flora or fauna became isolated on mountain areas during periods of maximum warming, in the last instance in the course of the Holocene, when a vast forest cover became re-established from Guinea westwards, and to the East as far as the Lake Victoria area. The phases of maximum fragmentation, which appear to have been connected with only the coldest periods – in the last instance during the second part of isotopic stages 6 (fromc.160 to 130 000 years) and 2 (fromc.24 to 12000 years BP) – relate to less than 10% of the last 800 000 years, and the phases of maximum forest extension would likewise appear to be less than 10% of the period. The remaining 80–90% of the time relates to ‘intermediate situations’ which varied from period to period, and these intermediate extension situations seem to have been the norm over the larger part of the Quaternary, rather than the present situation which is closer to a situation of maximum extension.
