We elucidate grapevine evolution and domestication histories with 3525 cultivated and wild accessions worldwide. In the Pleistocene, harsh climate drove the separation of wild grape ecotypes caused by continuous habitat fragmentation. Then, domestication occurred concurrently about 11,000 years ago in Western Asia and the Caucasus to yield table and wine grapevines. The Western Asia domesticates dispersed into Europe with early farmers, introgressed with ancient wild western ecotypes, and subsequently diversified along human migration trails into muscat and unique western wine grape ancestries by the late Neolithic. Analyses of domestication traits also reveal new insights into selection for berry palatability, hermaphroditism, muscat flavor, and berry skin color. These data demonstrate the role of the grapevines in the early inception of agriculture across Eurasia.

Viral infections cause the reduction of yields and efficiency of vine cultivation in all viticultural regions of the world. Simultaneous infecting with several viruses, the so-called mixed infection, can significantly increase the severity of symptoms. The article presents the results of study of mixed infecting of grapevine with viruses in the vineyards of the Crimean Peninsula during 2011-2020. More than 800 grapevine samples of 153 varieties selected in 23 vineyards of the Crimea were analyzed over the entire period of study. Presence of phytopathogenic viruses in the samples was determined by RT-PCR using virus specific primers. The share of 25.5 % of all the samples tested gave positive result for one or more of the following viruses: GFLV, GLRaV-1, GLRV-2, GLRaV-3, GFkV, GVA, GRSPaV, ArMV, GFLV. During the process of studyno vines affected by GVB virus were identified. Single-agent infection was found in 20% of the examined vines. The amount of vines affected by mixed infection was 5.48 % of all tested. In a mixed viral infection more common combinations are: GRSPaV/GFkV; GVA/GRSPaV; GVA/GLRaV-1/GRSPaV; GVA/GLRaV-3/GRSPaV. Vines were infected the most with GRSPaV and GFkV viruses, which is visually manifested in the form of mosaic leaf variegation, leaf chlorosis and the appearance of necrotic spots.

A total of 76 accessions of Crimean autochthonous grape cultivars from the collection of the National Institute of Vine and Wine "Magarach" were genotyped using 22 nuclear and 3 chloroplast microsatellite loci (SSR) to characterize their genetic diversity. The total number of alleles was 238, the mean number of alleles per locus was 10.8 and the range of expected heterozygosity was 0.4-0.88. Several synonyms were identified based on the comparison of microsatellite profiles with INRA and EVD databases. Morphological, eno-carpological and eno-chemical characterization of number of cultivars using BBCH scale and OIV descriptors were performed. INTRODUCTION – Common limits for phenotyping are costs in terms of equipment, specialized researchers, and time. Moreover, phenotyping requires specific methods in relation to the studied traits, and each method is generally designed to highlight very specific characteristics of the singular trait. Thus, the obtained results are not easily comparable between different institutions. However the data sharing is clearly the most powerful approach to limit the costs and efforts optimizing the obtained results in term of number of studied accessions. It should be stressed that funds are another great limit in research, especially in East countries, where the most interesting cultivar variability is preserved. 28 AIMS AND SCOPES – The main purpose of this work is the establishment of a phenotyping network able to produce comparable data among the Pan-European grapevine collections. MATERIALS AND METHODS – Two protocols were proposed: one for phenology and, the other, for enocarpological traits. Data were recorded in two consecutive vintages: 2012 and 2013. Concerning phenology, the extended BBCH scale (universal and flexible) was adapted to our objects by moving it into a chrono- phenological scale. Then, a cubic curve was selected for modelling the phenological courses. Thus, computing for each accession specific coefficients, it was possible to obtain the relative phenograms. Considering the different site climatic conditions, it was possible to spatialize the results, obtaining reference phenological maps. Concerning eno- carpological traits, the attention was focused on characteristics with a clear impact on the production quality, such as berry morphology (weight, diameters, number of seeds …) and composition (sugar, titratable acidity, anthocyanin and phenolic contents …). The protocol was organized to concatenate the data acquisition, with the objective to generate new derived variables. The methods were selected to be easily reproduced in all the involved collections, without the necessity of expensive facilities. RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS – The first year of dataset was used to evaluate the methods. Two publications are already available confirming the protocols quality. Concerning phenology, both the variability between accessions grown into the same collection and the phenological shifts between the reference varieties cultivated in different areas were highlighted by the protocol. Matching climatic and phenological information of reference cultivars, phenophases maps were obtained. The performances obtained by the eno-carpological protocol were satisfactory both in a global point of view and in a singular collection evaluation. The project obtained an impressive participation, considering the volunteer contribution without any material funding to cover the work costs. Twenty-four institutions collaborate to the data collection. 1724 accessions were evaluated: 931 (583 in 2012 and 348 in 2013) for phenology and 793 (424 in 2012 and 369 in 2013) for eno-carpological descriptions. CONCLUSIONS AND POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS – The protocol sharing allows the data comparison among different grapevine collections. The possible future application for this dataset could be related to scientific studies of genetic associations. Moreover, the improved knowledge of minor and neglected cultivars could have a direct impact on the industrial production, giving information concerning new varieties for future introduction in viticultural areas.

Four bred grapevine varieties released for commercial cultivation in Ukraine, namely 'Antey Magarachskii', 'Rubinovyi Magaracha', 'Granatovyi Magaracha' and 'Rubin Golodrigi', and their putative parental forms were genotyped using six microsatellite loci. Genotypes were compared with breeding records to verify genetic relationships among varieties. Results of the analysis confirmed four of six parent-offspring relationships. Results of the analysis allow to assume that genotype 'Seyve Villard 20347' is the direct parent of 'Antey Magarachskii' instead of its grandparent. The first-studied accession believed to be that of 'Granatovyi Magaracha' was identified as impurity. In order to verify the parentage of 'Granatovyi Magaracha', rest accessions of that variety and its putative parent 'Antey Magarachskii' were additionally genotyped at 13 nuclear loci and at three chloroplast loci. The parent-offspring relationship was confirmed, as all 'Granatovyi Magaracha' accessions had a common allele with the parent variety 'Antey Magarachskii' at each locus and the same chlorotype A. Different 'Granatovyi Magaracha' accessions could have been obtained via vegetative propagation of two seedlings which arose from one crossing. © Allerton Press, Inc.;2010.

International audience; Forty-seven wine and table grape accessions representing cultivars widely grown in Ukraine and 28 reference accessions were genotyped at six microsatellite loci (VVS2, VVMD5, VVMD7, VVMD27, VrZAG62, and VrZAG79) in order to solve accession labeling problems among Ukrainian accessions, characterize their genetic diversity, and establish genetic relationships with other European grapevine cultivars. Genotypes were standardized to meet the requirements of the European Vitis Database. Genetic diversity (H-E = 0.845) and allelic richness (A(S) = 8.09 alleles/locus/randorn sample of 16 individuals) were found to be higher in the Ukrainian collection than in any other geographical region, based on previously published studies on grapevine accessions. No geographic structure was identified in the total data set. However, winegrapes were significantly differentiated from table grapes and a Bayesian method detected two genetic clusters, one containing mainly table and Muscat grapes and the other mainly winegrape accessions from throughout Europe, including Ukraine. These results highlight the contribution of Muscat and European winegrapes in the breeding design of Ukrainian varieties and suggest that selection and historical and contemporary movement of germplasm are major factors shaping the structure of the grapevine gene pool. The genetically rich and diversified gene pool of Ukrainian varieties represents valuable source material for future sustainable breeding and improvement of grapevine.
