The paper presents retrospective analysis of satellite data of the upper troposphere / lower stratosphere over the epicentral area of the destructive earthquake of M=6.7, occurred in Tien-Shan territory. We established a well-defined temporal and spatial coherence between temperature perturbations and seismic activity. We used wavelet analysis to identify temporal and spectral coherence of temperature variations in a boundary zone of troposphere and stratosphere before the seismic event.

The paper presents results of retrospective analysis of satellite temperature time series above the epicentral area of the destructive Nura earthquake of M=6.7, occurred in a seismically active Tien-Shan region on October 5, 2008. An algorithm based on the use of a modified STA/LTA criterion has been developed for the purpose of selection and identification of perturbations associated with seismic activity. It has been established that an explicit mesoscale temperature anomaly in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS) was observed during the period from October 1 to 3, 2008. Temporal and spatial distributions of the temperature perturbations consistently appeared at various UTLS levels suggest probable association with seismic event preparation.

An ATOVS and MERRA data archive containing temperature values at isobaric levels from 1000 to 50 hPa was formed to study the atmospheric effects observed over the foci of two strong earthquakes with magnitudes M = 7,3. The first seismic event was recorded on August 19, 1992 in the northern Tien Shan and the second on November 12, 2017 in the border areas of the Zagros folded mountain belt. According to USGS intense aftershock activity in these regions began with these seismic events. Using correlation and spectral analysis we studied the vertical profiles of temperature and pressure in a disturbed atmosphere over seismically active regions. The modified anomaly index was calculated at isobaric levels from 500 to 50 hPa and on its basis the registered temperature anomalies were investigated.

Combination of numerical modeling (MERRA) and ground based (AERONET) monitoring of atmospheric aerosol parameters were used to discover a possible connection to seismic activities within the territory of Tien-Shan. The obtained results demonstrated consistent behavior between increase of aerosol optical thickness (AOT) and powerful earthquakes, epicenters of which were located within 200 km from the “Issyk-Kul” station (AERONET). Thereat, the dominant role was played by fine-dispersed particles, which virtually determined the nature of AOT evolution. We also observed well-defined changes of the ratio between mass fraction PM1.0 (particles less than 1.0 μm aerodynamic diameter) and optical thickness of aerosol scattering several days before an earthquake of M > 5.0 magnitude.

We analyzed satellite measurements of temperature at upper troposphere/lower stratosphere (UTLS) levels separated by the tropopause above the epicentral area of a strong earthquake with a magnitude of M=7.3 in the Northern Tien-Shan (Kyrgyzstan) that took place on August 19, 1992. The developed algorithm and method of continuous wavelet transform allowed detecting of abnormal behavior, temporal, spatial and spectral coherence of short-period temperature variations, preceding the seismic event. The results show that the spatial structure and dynamics of temperature anomalies in the area of UTLS have a sufficiently stable relation to seismic activity.

Long-term variations (2003–2015) of the Equivalent Water Height (EWH) above the geoid's contour obtained from GRACE satellite measurements are analyzed to establish the relationship between changes in the gravitational field with the stress-strain state of the geological environment and the seismic process in Central Asia (Pamir and Tien-Shan regions). The earthquakes gravitational effects study, based on the use of various GRACE models allows us to distinguish the component of the gravity field, which may be related to seismic activity. The results of temporal and spatial gravitational anomalies identification, the probable causes of which were tectonic factors associated with the redistribution of masses in the lithosphere as a result of large (M>5.5) regional earthquakes, are presented.

The paper presents the preliminary results of the lidar&radiometer measurement campaign (LRMC-2017), estimation of statistical relations between aerosol mode concentrations retrieved from CALIOP and ground-based lidar stations and case study of fire smoke events in the Eurasian regions using combined ground-based and space lidar and radiometer observations.

An algorithm for defining temperature anomalies and the results of diagnostic studies, based on a retrospective analysis of time series of satellite data in troposphere and stratosphere over the epicenters of strong earthquakes with magnitude M > 6.0, occurring in seismically active Mediterranean region of Europe are presented. It was found out that in all cases anomalous temperature disturbances were registered 1-10 days before the main seismic event.
