Abstract

We present new experimental measurements of resonance strengths in the astrophysical $^{23}$Al(p,γ)$^{24}$Si reaction, constraining the pathway of nucleosynthesis beyond $^{22}$Mg in X-ray burster scenarios. Specifically, we have performed the first measurement of the (d,p) reaction using a radioactive beam of $^{23}$Ne to explore levels in $^{24}$Ne, the mirror analog of $^{24}$Si. Four strong single-particle states were observed and corresponding neutron spectroscopic factors were extracted with a precision of ∼20%. Using these spectroscopic factors, together with mirror state identifications, we have reduced uncertainties in the strength of the key ℓ = 0 resonance at Er = 157 keV, in the astrophysical $^{23}$Al(p,γ) reaction, by a factor of 4. Our results show that the $^{22}$Mg(p,γ)$^{23}$Al(p,γ) pathway dominates over the competing $^{22}$Mg(α,p) reaction in all but the most energetic X-ray burster events (T>0.85 GK), significantly affecting energy production and the preservation of hydrogen fuel.

Abstract

International audience; The selenium isotopes lie at the heart of a tumultuous region of the nuclear chart where shape coexistence effects grapple with neutron-proton pairing correlations, triaxiality, and the impending proton drip line. In this work, a study of Se72 by internal conversion electron and γ-ray spectroscopy was undertaken with the SPICE and TIGRESS arrays. New measurements of the branching ratio and lifetime of the 02+ state were performed, yielding a determination of ρ2(E0;02+→01+)=29(3) milliunits. Two-state mixing calculations were performed that highlighted the importance of interpretation of such E0 strength values in the context of shape coexistence.

Abstract

Many efforts have been made in nuclear structure physics to interpret the nature of low-lying excited 0+ states in well-deformed rare-earth nuclei. However, one of the difficulties in resolving the nature of these states is that there is a paucity of data. In this work, excited 0+ states in the N = 92 nucleus 160Er were studied via the 162Er(p, t)160Er two-neutron transfer reaction, which is ideal for probing 0+ → 0+ transitions, at the Maier-Leibnitz-Laboratorium in Garching, Germany. Reaction products were momentum-analyzed with a Quadrupole-3-Dipole magnetic spectrograph. The 0+2 state was observed to be strongly populated with 18% of the ground state strength.

Abstract

The β-decay half lives of nuclei near the r-process path are critical information required for abundance calculations, especially those near neutron number N = 82. Specifically, the nuclei below doubly-magic 132Sn are key, and play an important role in the formation and shape of the second r-process abundance peak. The half lives in this region are challenging to measure due to the significant β-delayed neutron decay branches and the population of isomeric states with half lives comparable to the ground states. However, by measuring the time distribution of γ rays, these complications can be eliminated. This requires, however, a very effcient γ-ray spectrometer since the production of isotopes in this region is very limited. The new GRIFFIN array at TRIUMF-ISAC provides the high effciency required for these measurements. Recent improvements in the quality of the beams produced at TRIUMF, employing the IG-LIS device, are outlined, as well as the current status of the ARIEL facility. The GRIFFIN spectrometer and its use are briefly described. The experiment to measure the half lives of 128-130Cd is outlined and the results given, and some examples of the power of GRIFFIN to expand decay schemes, specifically for the decay of 128Cd to 128In, are given.

Abstract

This work reports on the scattering of 11Be on 197Au at energies around and below the Coulomb barrier. By experimentally identifying the elastic scattering, inelastic scattering and breakup channels, and comparing them with different calculations, valuable information on the 11Be structure and its B(E1) distribution to the continuum are obtained. On top of that, a deeper understanding of the scattering process at low energies is achieved for reactions of this kind, making these studies extendable to other loosely-bound systems like 17,19C

Abstract

The $\beta$-decay of neutron-rich $^{129}$In into $^{129}$Sn was studied using the GRIFFIN spectrometer at the ISAC facility at TRIUMF. The study observed the half-lives of the ground state and each of the $\beta$-decaying isomers. The level scheme of $^{129}$Sn has been expanded with thirty-one new $\gamma$-ray transitions and nine new excited levels, leading to a re-evaluation of the $\beta$-branching ratios and level spin assignments. The observation of the $\beta$-decay of the (29/2$^{+}$) 1911-keV isomeric state in $^{129}$In is reported for the first time, with a branching ratio of 2.0(5)$\%$.

Abstract

The nuclear structure of 122Xe has been investigated with measurements of the β+/EC decay of 122Cs with the 8 π γ-ray spectrometer at the TRIUMF-ISAC facility. The data collected have enabled the determination of relative B(E2) values of some low-energy transitions, and the in-band transitions of the excited 0+ bands have been observed. As a result, the 2+ rotational band members for the 0+2 and 0+3 states have been firmly identified.

A 480-MeV proton beam was impinged on a uranium carbide target and Cd129 was extracted using the Ion Guide Laser Ion Source (IG-LIS). β and γ rays following the decay of Cd129 were detected with the GRIFFIN spectrometer comprising the plastic scintillator SCEPTAR and 16 high-purity germanium (HPGe) clover-type detectors. From the β-γ-γ coincidence analysis, 32 new transitions and seven new excited states were established, expanding the previously known level scheme of In129. The logft values deduced from the β-feeding intensities suggest that some of the high-lying states were populated by the ν0g7/2→π0g9/2 allowed Gamow-Teller (GT) transition, which indicates that the allowed GT transition is more dominant in the Cd129 decay than previously reported. Abstract

Excited states of $^{129}$In populated following the $\beta$-decay of $^{129}$Cd were experimentally studied with the GRIFFIN spectrometer at the ISAC facility of TRIUMF, Canada. A 480-MeV proton beam was impinged on a uranium carbide target and $^{129}$Cd was extracted using the Ion Guide Laser Ion Source (IG-LIS). $\beta$- and $\gamma$-rays following the decay of $^{129}$Cd were detected with the GRIFFIN spectrometer comprising the plastic scintillator SCEPTAR and 16 high-purity germanium (HPGe) clover-type detectors. %, along with the $\beta$-particles were detected with SCEPTAR. Abstract

Spectroscopy of doubly magic $^{132}_{50}$Sn$_{82}$ has been performed with the GRIFFIN spectrometer at TRIUMF-ISAC following the $\beta$ decay of $^{132}_{49}$In$_{83}$. The analysis has allowed for the placement of a total of 70 transitions and 29 excited states in $^{132}$Sn. Detailed spectroscopy has also been performed on $^{131}$Sb, resulting from the $\beta$ decay of $^{131}$Sn, produced from the $\beta$-delayed neutron decay of $^{132}$In. Measurement of $\gamma$-rays in both $^{131}$Sn and $^{131}$Sb has led to the determination of the $\beta$-delayed neutron emission probability, $P_{n}$, from $^{132}$In. This is the first time the $P_{n}$ has been measured for this nucleus using $\gamma$ spectroscopy, and the new value of 12.3(4)% is consistent with the most recent $\beta-n$ counting experiment. Additionally, $\gamma$-$\gamma$ angular correlations have been performed in $^{132}$Sn, supporting the spin assignments of several excited states. Novel ab initio calculations are presented which describe several of the excited states, and these are compared to the experimental spectrum., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, to be published in Physical Review C

Abstract

The fusion-evaporation reaction Si28+Ca40 at 122 MeV beam energy was used to populate high-spin states in the odd-odd N=Z nucleus Ga62. With the combination of the Gammasphere spectrometer and the Microball CsI(Tl) charged-particle detector array the decay scheme of Ga62 was extended beyond 10 MeV excitation energy. The onset of band structures was observed. These high-spin rotational states are interpreted and classified by means of cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations.

Abstract

The DESCANT array (Deuterated Scintillator Array for Neutron Tagging) consists of up to 70 detectors, each filled with approximately 2 liters of deuterated benzene. This scintillator material o_ers pulse-shape discrimination (PSD) capabilities to distinguish between neutrons and γ-rays interacting with the scintillator material. In addition, the anisotropic nature of n – d scattering allows for the determination of the neutron energy spectrum directly from the pulse height spectrum, complementing the traditional time-of-flight (ToF) information. DESCANT can be coupled either to the TIGRESS (TRIUMF-ISAC Gamma-Ray Escape Suppressed Spectrometer) γ-ray spectrometer [1] located in the ISAC-II [2] hall of TRIUMF for in-beam experiments, or to the GRIFFIN (Gamma-Ray Infrastructure For Fundamental Investigations of Nuclei) γ-ray spectrometer [3] located in the ISAC-I hall of TRIUMF for decay spectroscopy experiments.

Abstract

International audience; Background: The region around neutron number N=60 in the neutron-rich Sr and Zr nuclei is one of the most dramatic examples of a ground-state shape transition from (near) spherical below N=60 to strongly deformed shapes in the heavier isotopes. Purpose: The single-particle structure of Sr95–97 approaching the ground-state shape transition at Sr98 has been investigated via single-neutron transfer reactions using the (d,p) reaction in inverse kinematics. These reactions selectively populate states with a large overlap of the projectile ground state coupled to a neutron in a single-particle orbital. Method: Radioactive Sr94,95,96 nuclei with energies of 5.5 AMeV were used to bombard a CD2, where D denotes H2, target. Recoiling light charged particles and γ rays were detected using a quasi-4π silicon strip detector array and a 12-element Ge array. The excitation energy of states populated was reconstructed employing the missing mass method combined with γ-ray tagging and differential cross sections for final states were extracted. Results: A reaction model analysis of the angular distributions allowed for firm spin assignments to be made for the low-lying 352, 556, and 681 keV excited states in Sr95 and a constraint has been placed on the spin of the higher-lying 1666 keV state. Angular distributions have been extracted for ten states populated in the H2(Sr95,p)Sr96 reaction, and constraints have been provided for the spins and parities of several final states. Additionally, the 0, 167, and 522 keV states in Sr97 were populated through the H2(Sr96,p) reaction. Spectroscopic factors for all three reactions were extracted. Conclusions: Results are compared to shell-model calculations in several model spaces and the structure of low-lying states in Sr94 and Sr95 is well described. The spectroscopic strength of the 0+ and 2+ states in Sr96 is significantly more fragmented than predicted. The spectroscopic factors for the H2(Sr96,p)Sr97 reaction suggest that the two lowest-lying excited states have significant overlap with the weakly deformed ground state of Sr96, but the ground state of Sr97 has a different structure.

Abstract

The "Island of Inversion" for neutron-rich nuclei in the vicinity of N=20 has become the testing ground par excellence for our understanding and modelling of shell evolution with isospin. In this context, the structure of the transitional nucleus 29Mg is critical. The first quantitative measurements of the single particle structure of 29Mg are reported, using data from the d(28Mg,p gamma)29Mg reaction. Two key states carrying significant ell=3 (f-wave) strength were identified at 2.40 +/- 0.10 (Jpi = 5/2-) and 4.28 +/- 0.04 MeV (7/2-). New state-of-the-art shell model calculations have been performed and the predictions are compared in detail with the experimental results. Whilst the two lowest 7/2- levels are well described, the sharing of single-particle strength disagrees with experiment for both the 3/2- and 5/2- levels and there appear to be general problems with configurations involving the p3/2 neutron orbital and core-excited components. Abstract

A neutron tagging array based upon liquid deuterated scintillators is being developed for the study of neutron-rich systems. The DEuterated SCintillator Array for Neutron Tagging, or DESCANT, will serve as an auxiliary detector for both the TIGRESS and GRIFFIN γ-ray spectrometers located at TRIUMF’s ISAC radioactive ion beam facility. DESCANT is comprised of 70 pseudohexaconical detectors of five varieties. The array is fully close-packed, subtends a downstream angle of θ = 65° and covers 92.6% of this solid angle or 1.08π sr. Each detector is 150 mm thick and filled with Bicron BC-537 liquid deuterated scintillator. The white, red and blue detectors are viewed by 127 mm diameter Hamamatsu R4155 photomultiplier tubes while the yellow and green detectors are viewed by 78 mm diameter ET Enterprises 9822B photomultiplier tubes. The aim of this work is to report on the mechanical design of DESCANT and the performance of a prototype detector measured using mono-energetic neutrons.

Abstract

A study of the 110In β+/EC decay was performed at the TRIUMF Isotope Separator and Accelerator (ISAC) facility to probe the nuclear structure of 110Cd. The data were collected in scaled-down γ-ray singles, γ − γ coincidence, and γ-electron coincidence mode. The data were sorted and a random-background subtracted γ − γ matrix was created containing a total of 850 million events. We expanded the level scheme of 110Cd significantly by identifying 75 levels under 3.8 MeV, including 12 new ones, and increased the number of previously observed transitions from these levels to 273. The γ-ray branching intensities have been extracted through an analysis of the coincidence intensities. The branching ratios were combined with a reanalysis of lifetimes measurements obtained in an (n, n'γ) reaction with monoenergetic neutrons for the calculation of B(E2) values and these results have lead to the proposal of a γ-soft rotor, or O(6) nucleus, rather than a vibrational, or U(5) pattern for the nature of the low-lying, low-spin levels in 110Cd.
