We consider a mesh network at the edge of a wireless network that connects users with the core network via multiple base stations. For this scenario we present a novel tree-search based algorithm that determines the optimal communication path to the core network for each user by maximizing the signal-to-noise-plus-interference ratio (SNIR) for each chosen path. We show that for three mesh networks with differing sizes, our algorithm chooses paths whose minimum SNIR is 3 dB to 18 dB better than that obtained via an algorithm that disregards the effect of interference within the network, 16 dB to 20 dB better than a random algorithm that chooses the paths randomly, and 0.5 dB to 7 dB better compared to a recently introduced genetic algorithm (GA). Furthermore, we show that our algorithm has a lower complexity compared to the GA in networks where its performance is within 2 dB.

The concept of 6G distributed integrated sensing and communications (DISAC) builds upon the functionality of integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) by integrating distributed architectures, significantly enhancing both sensing and communication coverage and performance. In 6G DISAC systems, tracking target trajectories requires base stations (BSs) to hand over their tracked targets to neighboring BSs. Determining what information to share, where, how, and when is critical to effective handover. This paper addresses the target handover challenge in DISAC systems and introduces a method enabling BSs to share essential target trajectory information at appropriate time steps, facilitating seamless handovers to other BSs. The target tracking problem is tackled using the standard trajectory Poisson multi-Bernoulli mixture (TPMBM) filter, enhanced with the proposed handover algorithm. Digital twinning is becoming increasingly vital in the design and real-time control of future wireless networks by providing precise cost-effective simulations, predictive insights, and real-time data integration. This paper explores the application of digital twinning in optimizing wireless communication systems within urban environments, where building arrangements can critically impact network performances. We develop a digital twin platform to simulate and analyze how factors such as building positioning, base station placement, and antenna design influence wireless propagation. The ray-tracing software package of Matlab is compared with Remcom Wireless InSite. Using a realistic radiation pattern of a base transceiver station (BTS) antenna, ray tracing simulations for signal propagation and interactions in urban landscapes are then extensively examined. By analyzing radio heat maps alongside antenna patterns, we gain valuable insights into optimizing wireless deployment strategies. This study highlights the potential of digital twinning as a critical tool for urban planners and network engineers.

Fine-tuning a pre-trained generative model has demonstrated good performance in generating promising drug molecules. The fine-tuning task is often formulated as a reinforcement learning problem, where previous methods efficiently learn to optimize a reward function to generate potential drug molecules. Nevertheless, in the absence of an adaptive update mechanism for the reward function, the optimization process can become stuck in local optima. The efficacy of the optimal molecule in a local optimization may not translate to usefulness in the subsequent drug optimization process or as a potential standalone clinical candidate. Therefore, it is important to generate a diverse set of promising molecules. Prior work has modified the reward function by penalizing structurally similar molecules, primarily focusing on finding molecules with higher rewards. To date, no study has comprehensively examined how different adaptive update mechanisms for the reward function influence the diversity of generated molecules. In this work, we investigate a wide range of intrinsic motivation methods and strategies to penalize the extrinsic reward, and how they affect the diversity of the set of generated molecules. Our experiments reveal that combining structure- and prediction-based methods generally yields better results in terms of molecular diversity.

We extract electron transport properties from atomistic simulations of a two-component plasma, by mapping the long-wavelength behaviour to a two-fluid model. The mapping procedure is performed via Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling over multiple spectra simultaneously. The free-electron dynamic structure factor and its properties have been investigated in the hydrodynamic formulation to justify its application to the long-wavelength behaviour of warm dense matter. We have applied this method to warm dense hydrogen modelled with wave packet molecular dynamics, and showed that the inferred electron transport properties are in agreement with a variety of reference calculations, except for the electron viscosity, where a substantive decrease is observed when compared to classical models., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

Representing the glaciation of mixed-phase clouds in terms of the Wegener-Bergeron-Findeisen process is a challenge for many weather and climate models, which tend to overestimate this process because cloud dynamics and microphysics are not accurately represented. As turbulence is essential for the transport of water vapour from evaporating liquid droplets to ice crystals, we developed a statistical model using established closures to assess the role of small-scale turbulence. The model successfully captures results of direct numerical simulations, and we use it to assess the role of small-scale turbulence. We find that small-scale turbulence broadens the droplet-size distribution somewhat, but it does not significantly affect the glaciation time on submetre scales. However, our analysis indicates that turbulence on larger spatial scales is likely to affect ice growth. While the model must be amended to describe larger scales, the present work facilitates a path forward to understanding the role of turbulence in the Wegener-Bergeron-Findeisen process., Comment: 25 pages, 5 figures, 5 tables

Understanding the interactions between nucleons in dense matter is one of the outstanding challenges of theoretical physics. Effective field theories have emerged as the dominant approach to address this problem at low energies, with many successful applications to the structure of nuclei and the properties of dense nucleonic matter. However, how far into the interior of neutron stars these interactions can describe dense matter is an open question. Here, we develop a framework that enables the inference of three-nucleon couplings in dense matter directly from astrophysical neutron-star observations. We apply this formalism to the LIGO/Virgo gravitational-wave event GW170817 and the X-ray measurements from NASA's Neutron-Star Interior Composition Explorer and establish direct constraints for the couplings that govern three-nucleon interactions in chiral effective field theory. Furthermore, we demonstrate how next-generation observations of a population of neutron-star mergers can offer stringent constraints on three-nucleon couplings, potentially at a level comparable to those from laboratory data. For any $\varepsilon > 0$, we prove that $k$-Dimensional Matching is hard to approximate within a factor of $k/(12 + \varepsilon)$ for large $k$ unless $\textsf{NP} \subseteq \textsf{BPP}$. Listed in Karp's 21 $\textsf{NP}$-complete problems, $k$-Dimensional Matching is a benchmark computational complexity problem which we find as a special case of many constrained optimization problems over independence systems including: $k$-Set Packing, $k$-Matroid Intersection, and Matroid $k$-Parity. For all the aforementioned problems, the best known lower bound was a $\Omega(k /\log(k))$-hardness by Hazan, Safra, and Schwartz. In contrast, state-of-the-art algorithms achieved an approximation of $O(k)$. Our result narrows down this gap to a constant and thus provides a rationale for the observed algorithmic difficulties. The crux of our result hinges on a novel approximation preserving gadget from $R$-degree bounded $k$-CSPs over alphabet size $R$ to $kR$-Dimensional Matching. Along the way, we prove that $R$-degree bounded $k$-CSPs over alphabet size $R$ are hard to approximate within a factor $\Omega_k(R)$ using known randomised sparsification methods for CSPs., Comment: 14 pages

Contemporary wireless communications systems adopt the Multi-User Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MU-MIMO) technique: a single base station or Access Point (AP) equipped with multiple antenna elements serves multiple active users simultaneously. Aiming at providing a more uniform wireless coverage, industry and academia have been working towards the evolution from centralized MIMO to Distributed-MIMO. That is, instead of having all the antenna elements co-located at a single AP, multiple APs, each equipped with a few or a single antenna element, jointly cooperate to serve the active users in the coverage area. In this work, we evaluate the performance of different D-MIMO setups under Rician fading, and considering different receive combining schemes. Note that the Rician fading model is convenient for MU-MIMO performance assessment, as it encompasses a wide variety of scenarios. Our numerical results show that the correlation among the channel vectors of different users increases with the Rician factor, which leads to a reduction on the achievable Spectral Efficiency (SE). Moreover, given a total number of antenna elements, there is an optimal number of APs and antenna elements per AP that provides the best performance. Coherent Diffraction Imaging (CDI) is an experimental technique to get images of isolated structures by recording the light scattered off the sample. Thanks to the extremely bright and short coherent light pulses provided by X-ray Free Electron Lasers, CDI makes it possible to study nanostructures in the gas phase and get time-resolved snapshots of their ultrafast dynamics with unprecedented resolution. In principle, the sample density can be recovered from the scattered light field through a straightforward Fourier Transform operation. However, only the amplitude of the field is recorded, while the phase is lost during the measurement process and has to be retrieved by means of suitable, well-established, phase retrieval algorithms. We present the Memetic Phase Retrieval (MPR) method, an improved approach to the phase retrieval problem, which makes use of a combination of existing phase retrieval algorithms and evolutionary algorithms to mitigate the shortcomings of conventional approaches. We benchmark the method on experimental data acquired in two experimental campaigns at SwissFEL and European XFEL. Imaging results on isolated nanostructures reveal considerable stability of the algorithm's behavior on the input parameters, as well as the capability of identifying the solution in challenging conditions. Path-integral molecular dynamics (PIMD) simulations are crucial for accurately capturing nuclear quantum effects in materials. However, their computational intensity and reliance on multiple software packages often limit their applicability at large scales. Here, we present an integration of PIMD methods, including thermostatted ring-polymer molecular dynamics (TRPMD), into the open-source GPUMD package, combined with highly accurate and efficient machine-learned neuroevolution potential (NEP) models. This approach achieves almost the accuracy of first-principles calculations with the computational efficiency of empirical potentials, enabling large-scale atomistic simulations that incorporate nuclear quantum effects. We demonstrate the efficacy of the combined NEP-PIMD approach by examining various thermal properties of diverse materials, including lithium hydride (LiH), three porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), liquid water, and elemental aluminum. For LiH, our NEP-PIMD simulations successfully capture the isotope effect, reproducing the experimentally observed dependence of the lattice parameter on the reduced mass. For MOFs, our results reveal that achieving good agreement with experimental data requires consideration of both nuclear quantum effects and dispersive interactions. For water, our PIMD simulations capture the significant impact of nuclear quantum effects on its microscopic structure. For aluminum, the TRPMD method effectively captures thermal expansion and phonon properties, aligning well with quantum mechanical predictions. In the early stages of drug discovery, decisions regarding which experiments to pursue can be influenced by computational models. These decisions are critical due to the time-consuming and expensive nature of the experiments. Therefore, it is becoming essential to accurately quantify the uncertainty in machine learning predictions, such that resources can be used optimally and trust in the models improves. While computational methods for drug discovery often suffer from limited data and sparse experimental observations, additional information can exist in the form of censored labels that provide thresholds rather than precise values of observations. However, the standard approaches that quantify uncertainty in machine learning cannot fully utilize censored labels. In this work, we adapt ensemble-based, Bayesian, and Gaussian models with tools to learn from censored labels by using the Tobit model from survival analysis. Our results demonstrate that despite the partial information available in censored labels, they are essential to accurately and reliably model the real pharmaceutical setting.

By performing an ensemble of molecular dynamics simulations, the model-dependent ionisation state is computed for strongly interacting systems self-consistently. This is accomplished through a free energy minimisation framework based on the technique of thermodynamic integration. To illustrate the method, two simple models applicable to partially ionised hydrogen plasma are presented in which pair potentials are employed between ions and neutral particles. Within the models, electrons are either bound in the hydrogen ground state or distributed in a uniform charge-neutralising background. Particular attention is given to the transition between atomic gas and ionised plasma, where the effect of neutral interactions is explored beyond commonly used models in the chemical picture. Furthermore, pressure ionisation is observed when short range repulsion effects are included between neutrals. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is a promising technology for next-generation wireless communication systems due to its enhanced spectral efficiency. In this paper, we consider an uplink NOMA system operating together with a high-dimensional absorptive reconfigurable intelligent surface (A-RIS). We aim to minimize the total power transmitted by the users in order to meet signal-to-interference-plus-noise constraints at the base station in the presence of a jammer. We propose an iterative algorithm to solve the high-dimensional non-convex optimization problem using linear programming to find the transmit powers and a fractional programming algorithm based on the Dinkelbach algorithm with a sequential convex relaxation procedure to optimize the reflection coefficients. We show that our algorithm converges on large optimization problems, with a jammer comprising as many as $64$ antennas, and an A-RIS with $128$ elements. Our numerical results show that, compared with a standard RIS that reflects all impinging energy, the A-RIS can dramatically reduce the users' required transmit power and successfully mitigate interference from the jammer. The absorption capability of the A-RIS is in particular useful in cases when the number of jammer antennas is of the same order as the number of A-RIS elements.

The region of $N\approx Z\approx 40$ has long been associated with strongly deformed nuclear configurations. The presence of this strong deformation was recently confirmed through lifetime measurements in $N\approx Z$ Sr and Zr nuclei. Theoretically, however, these nuclei present a challenge due to the vast valence space required to incorporate all deformation driving interactions. Recent state-of-the-art predictions indicate a near axial prolate deformation for $N=Z$ and $N=Z+2$ nuclei between $N=Z=36$ and $N=Z=40$. In this work we investigate the shores of this island of deformation through a sub-barrier Coulomb excitation study of the $N=Z+4$ nucleus, \textsuperscript{80}Sr. Extracting a spectroscopic quadrupole moment of $Q_s(2^+_1) = 0.45^{+0.83}_{-0.88}$~eb, we find that \textsuperscript{80}Sr is inconsistent with significant axial prolate deformation. This indicates that the predicted region of strong prolate deformation around $N=Z=40$ is tightly constrained to the quartet of nuclei: \textsuperscript{76,78}Sr and \textsuperscript{78,80}Zr., Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters B

Most works evaluating the performance of Multi-User Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MU-MIMO) systems consider Access Points (APs) with fixed antennas, that is, without any movement capability. Recently, the idea of APs with antenna arrays that are able to move have gained traction among the research community. Many works evaluate the communications performance of Movable Antenna Arrays (MAAs) that can move on the horizontal plane. However, they require a very bulky, complex and expensive movement system. In this work, we propose a simpler and cheaper alternative: the utilization of Rotary Antenna Arrays (RAA)s, i.e. antenna arrays that can rotate. We also analyze the performance of a system in which the array is able to both move and rotate. The movements and/or rotations of the array are computed in order to maximize the mean per-user achievable spectral efficiency, based on estimates of the locations of the active devices and using particle swarm optimization. We adopt a spatially correlated Rician fading channel model, and evaluate the resulting optimized performance of the different setups in terms of mean per-user achievable spectral efficiencies. Our numerical results show that both the optimal rotations and movements of the arrays can provide substantial performance gains when the line-of-sight components of the channel vectors are strong. AI assistants are being increasingly used by students enrolled in higher education institutions. While these tools provide opportunities for improved teaching and education, they also pose significant challenges for assessment and learning outcomes. We conceptualize these challenges through the lens of vulnerability, the potential for university assessments and learning outcomes to be impacted by student use of generative AI. We investigate the potential scale of this vulnerability by measuring the degree to which AI assistants can complete assessment questions in standard university-level STEM courses. Specifically, we compile a novel dataset of textual assessment questions from 50 courses at EPFL and evaluate whether two AI assistants, GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 can adequately answer these questions. We use eight prompting strategies to produce responses and find that GPT-4 answers an average of 65.8% of questions correctly, and can even produce the correct answer across at least one prompting strategy for 85.1% of questions. When grouping courses in our dataset by degree program, these systems already pass non-project assessments of large numbers of core courses in various degree programs, posing risks to higher education accreditation that will be amplified as these models improve. We present a novel scheme for modelling quantum plasmas in the warm dense matter (WDM) regime via a hybrid smoothed particle hydrodynamic - molecular dynamic treatment, here referred to as 'Bohm SPH'. This treatment is founded upon Bohm's interpretation of quantum mechanics for partially degenerate fluids, does not apply the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, and is computationally tractable, capable of modelling dynamics over ionic timescales at electronic time resolution. Bohm SPH is also capable of modelling non-Gaussian electron wavefunctions. We study online bipartite edge coloring, with nodes on one side of the graph revealed sequentially. The trivial greedy algorithm is $(2-o(1))$-competitive, which is optimal for graphs of low maximum degree, $\Delta=O(\log n)$ [BNMN IPL'92]. Numerous online edge-coloring algorithms outperforming the greedy algorithm in various settings were designed over the years (e.g., AGKM FOCS'03, BMM SODA'10, CPW FOCS'19, BGW SODA'21, KLSST STOC'22, BSVW STOC'24), all crucially relying on randomization. A commonly-held belief, first stated by [BNMN IPL'92], is that randomization is necessary to outperform greedy. Surprisingly, we refute this belief, by presenting a deterministic algorithm that beats greedy for sufficiently large $\Delta=\Omega(\log n)$, and in particular has competitive ratio $\frac{e}{e-1}+o(1)$ for all $\Delta=\omega(\log n)$. We obtain our result via a new and surprisingly simple randomized algorithm that works against adaptive adversaries (as opposed to oblivious adversaries assumed by prior work), which implies the existence of a similarly-competitive deterministic algorithm [BDBKTW STOC'90]., Comment: 17 pages, to appear in SODA 2025

In this work, we introduce Gemma 2, a new addition to the Gemma family of lightweight, state-of-the-art open models, ranging in scale from 2 billion to 27 billion parameters. In this new version, we apply several known technical modifications to the Transformer architecture, such as interleaving local-global attentions (Beltagy et al., 2020a) and group-query attention (Ainslie et al., 2023). We also train the 2B and 9B models with knowledge distillation (Hinton et al., 2015) instead of next token prediction. The resulting models deliver the best performance for their size, and even offer competitive alternatives to models that are 2-3 times bigger. We release all our models to the community.

The probability hypothesis density (PHD) and Poisson multi-Bernoulli (PMB) filters are two popular set-type multi-object filters. Motivated by the fact that the multi-object filtering density after each update step in the PHD filter is a PMB without approximation, in this paper we present a multi-object smoother involving PHD forward filtering and PMB backward smoothing. This is achieved by first running the PHD filtering recursion in the forward pass and extracting the PMB filtering densities after each update step before the Poisson Point Process approximation, which is inherent in the PHD filter update. Then in the backward pass we apply backward simulation for sets of trajectories to the extracted PMB filtering densities. We call the resulting multi-object smoother hybrid PHD-PMB trajectory smoother. Notably, the hybrid PHD-PMB trajectory smoother can provide smoothed trajectory estimates for the PHD filter without labeling or tagging, which is not possible for existing PHD smoothers. Also, compared to the trajectory PHD filter, which can only estimate alive trajectories, the hybrid PHD-PMB trajectory smoother enables the estimation of the set of all trajectories. In multi-room environments, modelling the sound propagation is complex due to the coupling of rooms and diverse source-receiver positions. A common scenario is when the source and the receiver are in different rooms without a clear line of sight. For such source-receiver configurations, an initial increase in energy is observed, referred to as the "fade-in" of reverberation. Based on recent work of representing inhomogeneous and anisotropic reverberation with common decay times, this work proposes an extended parametric model that enables the modelling of the fade-in phenomenon. The method performs fitting on the envelopes, instead of energy decay functions, and allows negative amplitudes of decaying exponentials. In open-set semi-supervised learning (OSSL), we consider unlabeled datasets that may contain unknown classes. Existing OSSL methods often use the softmax confidence for classifying data as in-distribution (ID) or out-of-distribution (OOD). Additionally, many works for OSSL rely on ad-hoc thresholds for ID/OOD classification, without considering the statistics of the problem. We propose a new score for ID/OOD classification based on angles in feature space between data and an ID subspace. Moreover, we propose an approach to estimate the conditional distributions of scores given ID or OOD data, enabling probabilistic predictions of data being ID or OOD. These components are put together in a framework for OSSL, termed \emph{ProSub}, that is experimentally shown to reach SOTA performance on several benchmark problems. Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) methods need to both solve the data association (DA) problem and the joint estimation of the sensor trajectory and the map, conditioned on a DA. In this paper, we propose a novel integrated approach to solve both the DA problem and the batch SLAM problem simultaneously, combining random finite set (RFS) theory and the graph-based SLAM approach. A sampling method based on the Poisson multi-Bernoulli mixture (PMBM) density is designed for dealing with the DA uncertainty, and a graph-based SLAM solver is applied for the conditional SLAM problem. In the end, a post-processing approach is applied to merge SLAM results from different iterations. Using synthetic data, it is demonstrated that the proposed SLAM approach achieves performance close to the posterior Cram\'er-Rao bound, and outperforms state-of-the-art RFS-based SLAM filters in high clutter and high process noise scenarios.

Realizing Majorana bound states (MBSs) in short, well-controllable chains of coupled quantum dots sidesteps the problem of disorder, but requires fine-tuning and does not give the true topological protection inherent to long chains. Here, we introduce a new quality measure that is applicable also in the presence of strong electron-electron interactions and that quantifies the closeness to topological protection of finetuned MBSs in short quantum-dot chains. We call this measure local distinguishability because it puts a bound to the degree an arbitrary local measurement can distinguish between two states. We study the local distinguishability for quantum-dot chains of different length. The three-dot chain is studied in detail, and we find that it may not always be an improvement over the two-dot case, a fact that can be understood within an effective model derived from perturbation theory. For longer chains, the local distinguishability vanishes exponentially, signalling a transition to a topological phase with two ground states that cannot be distinguished by any local measurement., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures

We present two methods for computing the dynamic structure factor for warm dense hydrogen without invoking either the Born-Oppenheimer approximation or the Chihara decomposition, by employing a wave packet description which resolves the electron dynamics during ion evolution. Firstly, a semiclassical method is discussed which is corrected based on known quantum constraints, and secondly, a direct computation of the density-density response function within the molecular dynamics. The wave packet models are compared to PIMC and DFT-MD for the static and low-frequency behaviour. For the high-frequency behaviour the models recover the expected behaviour in the limits of small and large momentum transfers and show the characteristic flattening of the plasmon dispersion for intermediate momentum transfers due to interactions, in agreement with commonly used models for X-ray Thomson scattering. By modelling the electrons and ions on an equal footing, both the ion and free electron part of the spectrum can now be treated within a single framework where we simultaneously resolve the ion-acoustic and plasmon mode, with a self-consistent description of collisions and screening., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures

Pulse profile modeling of X-ray data from NICER is now enabling precision inference of neutron star mass and radius. Combined with nuclear physics constraints from chiral effective field theory ($\chi$EFT), and masses and tidal deformabilities inferred from gravitational wave detections of binary neutron star mergers, this has lead to a steady improvement in our understanding of the dense matter equation of state (EOS). Here we consider the impact of several new results: the radius measurement for the 1.42$\,M_\odot$ pulsar PSR J0437$-$4715 presented by Choudhury et al. (2024), updates to the masses and radii of PSR J0740$+$6620 and PSR J0030$+$0451, and new $\chi$EFT results for neutron star matter up to 1.5 times nuclear saturation density. Using two different high-density EOS extensions -- a piecewise-polytropic (PP) model and a model based on the speed of sound in a neutron star (CS) -- we find the radius of a 1.4$\,M_\odot$ (2.0$\,M_\odot$) neutron star to be constrained to the 95% credible ranges $12.28^{+0.50}_{-0.76}\,$km ($12.33^{+0.70}_{-1.34}\,$km) for the PP model and $12.01^{+0.56}_{-0.75}\,$km ($11.55^{+0.94}_{-1.09}\,$km) for the CS model. The maximum neutron star mass is predicted to be $2.15^{+0.14}_{-0.16}\,$$M_\odot$ and $2.08^{+0.28}_{-0.16}\,$$M_\odot$ for the PP and CS model, respectively. We explore the sensitivity of our results to different orders and different densities up to which $\chi$EFT is used, and show how the astrophysical observations provide constraints for the pressure at intermediate densities. The Fifth-Generation (5G) wireless communications networks introduced native support for Machine-Type Communications (MTC) use cases. Nevertheless, current 5G networks cannot fully meet the very stringent requirements regarding latency, reliability, and number of connected devices of most MTC use cases. Industry and academia have been working on the evolution from 5G to Sixth Generation (6G) networks. One of the main novelties is adopting Distributed Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (D-MIMO) networks. However, most works studying D-MIMO consider antenna arrays with no movement capabilities, even though some recent works have shown that this could bring substantial performance improvements. In this work, we propose the utilization of Access Points (APs) equipped with Rotary Uniform Linear Arrays (RULAs) for this purpose. Considering a spatially correlated Rician fading model, the optimal angular position of the RULAs is jointly computed by the central processing unit using particle swarm optimization as a function of the location of the active devices. Considering the impact of imperfect location estimates, our numerical results show that the RULAs's optimal rotation brings substantial performance gains in terms of mean per-user spectral efficiency. The improvement grows with the strength of the line-of-sight components of the channel vectors. Given the total number of antenna elements, we study the trade-off between the number of APs and the number of antenna elements per AP, revealing an optimal number of APs for the cases of APs equipped with static ULAs and RULAs., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures. We consider the CH-KP-I equation. For this equation we prove the existence of steady solutions, which are solitary in one horizontal direction and periodic in the other. We show that such waves bifurcate from the line solitary wave solutions, i.e. solitary wave solutions to the Camassa-Holm equation, in a dimension-breaking bifurcation. This is achieved through reformulating the problem as a dynamical system for a perturbation of the line solitary wave solutions, where the periodic direction takes the role of time, then applying the Lyapunov-Iooss theorem., Comment: 11 pages

Accurate knowledge of the properties of hydrogen at high compression is crucial for astrophysics (e.g. planetary and stellar interiors, brown dwarfs, atmosphere of compact stars) and laboratory experiments, including inertial confinement fusion. There exists experimental data for the equation of state, conductivity, and Thomson scattering spectra. However, the analysis of the measurements at extreme pressures and temperatures typically involves additional model assumptions, which makes it difficult to assess the accuracy of the experimental data. rigorously. On the other hand, theory and modeling have produced extensive collections of data. They originate from a very large variety of models and simulations including path integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) simulations, density functional theory (DFT), chemical models, machine-learned models, and combinations thereof. At the same time, each of these methods has fundamental limitations (fermion sign problem in PIMC, approximate exchange-correlation functionals of DFT, inconsistent interaction energy contributions in chemical models, etc.), so for some parameter ranges accurate predictions are difficult. Recently, a number of breakthroughs in first principle PIMC and DFT simulations were achieved which are discussed in this review. Here we use these results to benchmark different simulation methods. We present an update of the hydrogen phase diagram at high pressures, the expected phase transitions, and thermodynamic properties including the equation of state and momentum distribution. Furthermore, we discuss available dynamic results for warm dense hydrogen, including the conductivity, dynamic structure factor, plasmon dispersion, imaginary-time structure, and density response functions. We conclude by outlining strategies to combine different simulations to achieve accurate theoretical predictions.

We generalize the method used by M{\ae}hlen & Seth [17] used to prove the existence of small-amplitude asymmetric solutions to the capillary-gravity Whiham equation, so that it can be applied directly to a class of similar equations. The purpose is to prove or disprove the existence of asymmetric waves for the water wave problem or other model equations for water waves. Our main result in this paper is a theorem that gives both necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of small-amplitude periodic asymmetry solutions for this class of equations. The result is then applied to an infinite depth capillary-gravity Whitham equation and an infinite depth capillary-gravity Babenko equation to show the nonexistence of small-amplitude waves for these equations. Mueller matrices provide a complete description of a medium's response to excitation by polarized light, and their characterization is important across a broad range of applications from ellipsometry in material science to polarimetry in biochemistry, medicine and astronomy. Here we introduce single-shot Mueller matrix polarimetry based on generalized measurements performed with a Poincar\'e beam. We determine the Mueller matrix of a homogeneous medium with unknown optical activity by detecting its optical response to a Poincar\'e beam, which across its profile contains all polarization states, and analyze the resulting polarization pattern in terms of four generalized measurements, which are implemented as a path-displaced Sagnac interferometer. We illustrate the working of our Mueller matrix polarimetry on the example of tilted and rotated wave plates and find excellent agreement with predictions as well as alternative Stokes measurements. After initial calibration, the alignment of the device stays stable for up to 8 hours, promising suitability for the dynamic characterization of Mueller matrices that change in time.

We present new exclusion bounds obtained at the European X-ray Free Electron Laser facility (EuXFEL) on axion-like particles (ALPs) in the mass range 10^{-3} eV < m_a < 10^{4} eV. Our experiment exploits the Primakoff effect via which photons can, in the presence of a strong external electric field, decay into axions, which then convert back into photons after passing through an opaque wall. While similar searches have been performed previously at a 3^rd generation synchrotron [1], our work demonstrates improved sensitivity, exploiting the higher brightness of X-rays at EuXFEL., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

This paper introduces a new parallel run-time for QuickCheck, a Haskell library and EDSL for specifying and randomly testing properties of programs. The new run-time can run multiple tests for a single property in parallel, using the available cores. Moreover, if a counterexample is found, the run-time can also shrink the test case in parallel, implementing a parallel search for a locally minimal counterexample. Our experimental results show a 3--9$\times$ speed-up for testing QuickCheck properties on a variety of heavy-weight benchmark problems. We also evaluate two different shrinking strategies; deterministic shrinking, which guarantees to produce the same minimal test case as standard sequential shrinking, and greedy shrinking, which does not have this guarantee but still produces a locally minimal test case, and is faster in practice., Comment: 12 pages, IFL 2023

Future generations of mobile networks call for concurrent sensing and communication functionalities in the same hardware and/or spectrum. Compared to communication, sensing services often suffer from limited coverage, due to the high path loss of the reflected signal and the increased infrastructure requirements. To provide a more uniform quality of service, distributed multiple input multiple output (D-MIMO) systems deploy a large number of distributed nodes and efficiently control them, making distributed integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) possible. In this paper, we investigate ISAC in D-MIMO through the lens of different design architectures and deployments, revealing both conflicts and synergies. In addition, simulation and demonstration results reveal both opportunities and challenges towards the implementation of ISAC in D-MIMO.

Radio-frequency particle accelerators are engines of discovery, powering high-energy physics and photon science, but are also large and expensive due to their limited accelerating fields. Plasma-wakefield accelerators (PWFAs) provide orders-of-magnitude stronger fields in the charge-density wave behind a particle bunch travelling in a plasma, promising particle accelerators of greatly reduced size and cost. However, PWFAs can easily degrade the beam quality of the bunches they accelerate. Emittance, which determines how tightly beams can be focused, is a critical beam quality in for instance colliders and free-electron lasers, but is particularly prone to degradation. We demonstrate, for the first time, emittance preservation in a high-gradient and high-efficiency PWFA while simultaneously preserving charge and energy spread. This establishes that PWFAs can accelerate without degradation$\unicode{x2014}$essential for energy boosters in photon science and multistage facilities for compact high-energy particle colliders., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, 11 supplementary figures

Neural Radiance Fields (NeRFs) have emerged as promising tools for advancing autonomous driving (AD) research, offering scalable closed-loop simulation and data augmentation capabilities. However, to trust the results achieved in simulation, one needs to ensure that AD systems perceive real and rendered data in the same way. Although the performance of rendering methods is increasing, many scenarios will remain inherently challenging to reconstruct faithfully. To this end, we propose a novel perspective for addressing the real-to-simulated data gap. Rather than solely focusing on improving rendering fidelity, we explore simple yet effective methods to enhance perception model robustness to NeRF artifacts without compromising performance on real data. Moreover, we conduct the first large-scale investigation into the real-to-simulated data gap in an AD setting using a state-of-the-art neural rendering technique. Specifically, we evaluate object detectors and an online mapping model on real and simulated data, and study the effects of different fine-tuning strategies.Our results show notable improvements in model robustness to simulated data, even improving real-world performance in some cases. Last, we delve into the correlation between the real-to-simulated gap and image reconstruction metrics, identifying FID and LPIPS as strong indicators. In this report, we introduce the Gemini 1.5 family of models, representing the next generation of highly compute-efficient multimodal models capable of recalling and reasoning over fine-grained information from millions of tokens of context, including multiple long documents and hours of video and audio. The family includes two new models: (1) an updated Gemini 1.5 Pro, which exceeds the February version on the great majority of capabilities and benchmarks; (2) Gemini 1.5 Flash, a more lightweight variant designed for efficiency with minimal regression in quality. Gemini 1.5 models achieve near-perfect recall on long-context retrieval tasks across modalities, improve the state-of-the-art in long-document QA, long-video QA and long-context ASR, and match or surpass Gemini 1.0 Ultra's state-of-the-art performance across a broad set of benchmarks. Studying the limits of Gemini 1.5's long-context ability, we find continued improvement in next-token prediction and near-perfect retrieval (>99%) up to at least 10M tokens, a generational leap over existing models such as Claude 3.0 (200k) and GPT-4 Turbo (128k). Finally, we highlight real-world use cases, such as Gemini 1.5 collaborating with professionals on completing their tasks achieving 26 to 75% time savings across 10 different job categories, as well as surprising new capabilities of large language models at the frontier; when given a grammar manual for Kalamang, a language with fewer than 200 speakers worldwide, the model learns to translate English to Kalamang at a similar level to a person who learned from the same content.

We consider unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) for semantic segmentation in which the model is trained on a labeled source dataset and adapted to an unlabeled target dataset. Unfortunately, current self-training methods are susceptible to misclassified pseudo-labels resulting from erroneous predictions. Since certain classes are typically associated with less reliable predictions in UDA, reducing the impact of such pseudo-labels without skewing the training towards some classes is notoriously difficult. To this end, we propose an extensive cut-and-paste strategy (ECAP) to leverage reliable pseudo-labels through data augmentation. Specifically, ECAP maintains a memory bank of pseudo-labeled target samples throughout training and cut-and-pastes the most confident ones onto the current training batch. We implement ECAP on top of the recent method MIC and boost its performance on two synthetic-to-real domain adaptation benchmarks. Notably, MIC+ECAP reaches an unprecedented performance of 69.1 mIoU on the Synthia->Cityscapes benchmark. Our code is available at https://github.com/ErikBrorsson/ECAP.

The classic theorem of Vizing (Diskret. Analiz.'64) asserts that any graph of maximum degree $\Delta$ can be edge colored (offline) using no more than $\Delta+1$ colors (with $\Delta$ being a trivial lower bound). In the online setting, Bar-Noy, Motwani and Naor (IPL'92) conjectured that a $(1+o(1))\Delta$-edge-coloring can be computed online in $n$-vertex graphs of maximum degree $\Delta=\omega(\log n)$. Numerous algorithms made progress on this question, using a higher number of colors or assuming restricted arrival models, such as random-order edge arrivals or vertex arrivals (e.g., AGKM FOCS'03, BMM SODA'10, CPW FOCS'19, BGW SODA'21, KLSST STOC'22). In this work, we resolve this longstanding conjecture in the affirmative in the most general setting of adversarial edge arrivals. We further generalize this result to obtain online counterparts of the list edge coloring result of Kahn (J. Comb. Theory. Noise-contrastive estimation (NCE) is a popular method for estimating unnormalised probabilistic models, such as energy-based models, which are effective for modelling complex data distributions. Unlike classical maximum likelihood (ML) estimation that relies on importance sampling (resulting in ML-IS) or MCMC (resulting in contrastive divergence, CD), NCE uses a proxy criterion to avoid the need for evaluating an often intractable normalisation constant. Despite apparent conceptual differences, we show that two NCE criteria, ranking NCE (RNCE) and conditional NCE (CNCE), can be viewed as ML estimation methods. Specifically, RNCE is equivalent to ML estimation combined with conditional importance sampling, and both RNCE and CNCE are special cases of CD. These findings bridge the gap between the two method classes and allow us to apply techniques from the ML-IS and CD literature to NCE, offering several advantageous extensions., Comment: Accepted to AISTATS 2024

Recently we have proposed a new concept of a thermal neutron detector based on resistive plate chambers and 10B4C solid neutron converters, enabling to readout with high resolution in both the 3D position of neutron capture and the neutron time of flight (ToF). In this paper, we report the results of the first beam tests conducted with a new neutron RPC detection module, coupled to the position readout units of a new design. The main focus is on the measurements of the neutron ToF and identification of the converter layer where the neutron is captured, giving the position along the beam direction.

The Multi-Blade (MB) Boron-10-based neutron detector is the chosen technology for three instruments at the European Spallation Source (ESS): the two ESS reflectometers, ESTIA and FREIA, and the Test Beam Line. A fourth MB detector has been built, installed and commissioned for the user operation of the reflectometer Amor at PSI (Switzerland). Amor can be considered a downscaled version of the ESS reflectometer ESTIA. They are based on the same Selene guide concept, optimized for performing focusing reflectometry on small samples. The experience gained at Amor is invaluable for the future deployment of the MB detector at the ESS. This manuscript describes the MB detector construction and installation at Amor along with the readout electronics chain based on the VMM3a ASIC. Contemporary wireless communication systems rely on Multi-User Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MU-MIMO) techniques. In such systems, each Access Point (AP) is equipped with multiple antenna elements and serves multiple devices simultaneously. Notably, traditional systems utilize fixed antennas, i.e., antennas without any movement capabilities, while the idea of movable antennas has recently gained traction among the research community. By moving in a confined region, movable antennas are able to exploit the wireless channel variation in the continuous domain. This additional degree of freedom may enhance the quality of the wireless links, and consequently the communication performance. However, movable antennas for MU-MIMO proposed in the literature are complex, bulky, expensive and present a high power consumption. In this paper, we propose an alternative to such systems that has lower complexity and lower cost. More specifically, we propose the incorporation of rotation capabilities to APs equipped with Uniform Linear Arrays (ULAs) of antennas. We consider the uplink of an indoor scenario where the AP serves multiple devices simultaneously. The optimal rotation of the ULA is computed based on estimates of the positions of the active devices and aiming at maximizing the per-user mean achievable Spectral Efficiency (SE). Adopting a spatially correlated Rician channel model, our numerical results show that the rotation capabilities of the AP can bring substantial improvements in the SE in scenarios where the line-of-sight component of the channel vectors is strong. EU directives stipulate a systematic follow-up of train delays. In Sweden, the Swedish Transport Administration registers and assigns an appropriate delay attribution code. However, this delay attribution code is assigned manually, which is a complex task. In this paper, a machine learning-based decision support for assigning delay attribution codes based on event descriptions is investigated. The text is transformed using TF-IDF, and two models, Random Forest and Support Vector Machine, are evaluated against a random uniform classifier and the classification performance of the Swedish Transport Administration. Further, the problem is modeled as both a hierarchical and flat approach. The results indicate that a hierarchical approach performs better than a flat approach. Millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input-multi-output (MIMO) is now a reality with great potential for further improvement. We study full-duplex transmissions as an effective way to improve mmWave MIMO systems. Compared to half-duplex systems, full-duplex transmissions may offer higher data rates and lower latency. However, full-duplex transmission is hindered by self-interference (SI) at the receive antennas, and SI channel estimation becomes a crucial step to make the full-duplex systems feasible. In this paper, we address the problem of channel estimation in full-duplex mmWave MIMO systems using neural networks (NNs). Our approach involves sharing pilot resources between user equipments (UEs) and transmit antennas at the base station (BS), aiming to reduce the pilot overhead in full-duplex systems and to achieve a comparable level to that of a half-duplex system. Additionally, in the case of separate antenna configurations in a full-duplex BS, providing channel estimates of transmit antenna (TX) arrays to the downlink UEs poses another challenge, as the TX arrays are not capable of receiving pilot signals. To address this, we employ an NN to map the channel from the downlink UEs to the receive antenna (RX) arrays to the channel from the TX arrays to the downlink UEs. We further elaborate on how NNs perform the estimation with different architectures, (e.g., different numbers of hidden layers), the introduction of non-linear distortion (e.g., with a 1-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC)), and different channel conditions (e.g., low-correlated and high-correlated channels). Our work provides novel insights into NN-based channel estimators.

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) is a widely used spectroscopic technique, providing access to the electronic structure and dynamics of atoms, molecules, and solids. However, RIXS requires a narrow bandwidth x-ray probe to achieve high spectral resolution. The challenges in delivering an energetic monochromated beam from an x-ray free electron laser (XFEL) thus limit its use in few-shot experiments, including for the study of high energy density systems. Here we demonstrate that by correlating the measurements of the self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) spectrum of an XFEL with the RIXS signal, using a dynamic kernel deconvolution with a neural surrogate, we can achieve electronic structure resolutions substantially higher than those normally afforded by the bandwidth of the incoming x-ray beam. We further show how this technique allows us to discriminate between the valence structures of Fe and Fe$_2$O$_3$, and provides access to temperature measurements as well as M-shell binding energies estimates in warm-dense Fe compounds.

Multi-object tracking (MOT) is the task of estimating the state trajectories of an unknown and time-varying number of objects over a certain time window. Several algorithms have been proposed to tackle the multi-object smoothing task, where object detections can be conditioned on all the measurements in the time window. However, the best-performing methods suffer from intractable computational complexity and require approximations, performing suboptimally in complex settings. Deep learning based algorithms are a possible venue for tackling this issue but have not been applied extensively in settings where accurate multi-object models are available and measurements are low-dimensional. We propose a novel DL architecture specifically tailored for this setting that decouples the data association task from the smoothing task. We compare the performance of the proposed smoother to the state-of-the-art in different tasks of varying difficulty and provide, to the best of our knowledge, the first comparison between traditional Bayesian trackers and DL trackers in the smoothing problem setting.
