Abstract

An accurate metrological investigation was performed on several units of the two de facto standards for deep-ocean temperature measurements—the SBE35 (the reference thermometer) and the SBE3 (the working thermometer) from SeaBird Scientific. Four SBE35 units were repeatedly calibrated against state-of-the-art fixed-point cells (triple point of water at 0.01 °C and melting point of gallium at 29.7646 °C), with calibration uncertainties of approximately 0.2 mK and 0.5 mK, respectively. Three SBE35 units and one SBE3 unit were calibrated in the temperature range 0 °C to 30 °C, again with sub-millikelvin calibration uncertainties, in a recently-developed water–bath calibration facility. All these calibrations evidenced (1) the deviation of each unit from its original manufacturer’s calibration (up to 1.7 mK), which were found to be inconsistent with the manufacturer’s uncertainty claims and (2) unexplained irreproducibilities, which could not be attributed to the calibration system of up to 1.5 mK. The effect of high pressures (up to 60 MPa) on the response of two SBE35 units was investigated by pressurizing the SBE35 units inside a purpose-built compact pressure enclosure. The results of the pressure investigation confirmed the existence of a small device-dependent pressure effect (approximately 0.3 mK at 60 MPa) and the need for individual temperature–pressure calibration of each SBE35 unit.

Abstract

Measuring temperature and salinity profiles in the world's oceans is crucial to understanding ocean dynamics and its influence on the heat budget, the water cycle, the marine environment and on our climate. Since 1983 the German research vessel and icebreaker Polarstern has been the platform of numerous CTD (conductivity, temperature, depth instrument) deployments in the Arctic and the Antarctic. We report on a unique data collection spanning 33 years of polar CTD data. In total 131 data sets (1 data set per cruise leg) containing data from 10 063 CTD casts are now freely available at doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.860066. During this long period five CTD types with different characteristics and accuracies have been used. Therefore the instruments and processing procedures (sensor calibration, data validation, etc.) are described in detail. This compilation is special not only with regard to the quantity but also the quality of the data – the latter indicated for each data set using defined quality codes. The complete data collection includes a number of repeated sections for which the quality code can be used to investigate and evaluate long-term changes. Beginning with 2010, the salinity measurements presented here are of the highest quality possible in this field owing to the introduction of the OPTIMARE Precision Salinometer.

Abstract

The GEOTRACES Intermediate Data Product 2017 (IDP2017) is the second publicly available data product of the international GEOTRACES programme, and contains data measured and quality controlled before the end of 2016. The IDP2017 includes data from the Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic, Southern and Indian oceans, with about twice the data volume of the previous IDP2014. For the first time, the IDP2017 contains data for a large suite of biogeochemical parameters as well as aerosol and rain data characterising atmospheric trace element and isotope (TEI) sources. The TEI data in the IDP2017 are quality controlled by careful assessment of intercalibration results and multi-laboratory data comparisons at crossover stations. The IDP2017 consists of two parts: (1) a compilation of digital data for more than 450 TEIs as well as standard hydrographic parameters, and (2) the eGEOTRACES Electronic Atlas providing an on-line atlas that includes more than 590 section plots and 130 animated 3D scenes. The digital data are provided in several formats, including ASCII, Excel spreadsheet, netCDF, and Ocean Data View collection. Users can download the full data packages or make their own custom selections with a new on-line data extraction service. In addition to the actual data values, the IDP2017 also contains data quality flags and 1-σ data error values where available. Quality flags and error values are useful for data filtering and for statistical analysis. Metadata about data originators, analytical methods and original publications related to the data are linked in an easily accessible way. The eGEOTRACES Electronic Atlas is the visual representation of the IDP2017 as section plots and rotating 3D scenes. The basin-wide 3D scenes combine data from many cruises and provide quick overviews of large-scale tracer distributions. These 3D scenes provide geographical and bathymetric context that is crucial for the interpretation and assessment of tracer plumes near ocean margins or along ridges. The IDP2017 is the result of a truly international effort involving 326 researchers from 25 countries. This publication provides the critical reference for unpublished data, as well as for studies that make use of a large cross-section of data from the IDP2017. Abstract

Many trace elements like Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn are essential for marine life, some trace elements are of concern as pollutants, e.g. Pb and Hg, while others, together with a diverse array of isotopes, are used to assess modern-ocean processes and the role of the ocean in past climate change. GEOTRACES is an international program that aims to measure the distribution of trace elements and isotopes throughout the world oceans to improve our understanding of their marine biogeochemical cycles. To contribute to GEOTRACES a new sampler system was developed at NIOZ allowing efficient sampling of large volumes of seawater under ultraclean conditions. The 24 "PRISTINE" samplers each with a volume of 24.4 L are made of a high-purity polymer Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) and are opened and closed using a butterfly-valve closing mechanism. The samplers are mounted on an all-titanium frame and deployed using a poly-aramide hydrowire (Super Aram) with internal power/signal conductors. Upon recovery the complete frame is immediately placed in its own clean-air laboratory unit. Samplers are (i) always closed when onboard, (ii) always mounted on the frame without the need for hand-carrying heavy samplers, and (iii) can be deployed again with minimal (manual) preparation. The PRISTINE ultraclean sampling system was used for the first time during the GA02 GEOTRACES cruises in the West Atlantic Ocean (2010-2012). During 60 full ocean depth stations all 24 samplers closed with a 100% success rate. Sampling proved to be much faster, less labor intensive, and ultraclean. A comparison of salinity, temperature, nutrient and oxygen data collected with the rectangular titanium frame with PRISTINE samplers and a traditional CTD frame with Niskin samplers showed that the CTD systems functioned equally well, that the PRISTINE samplers took discrete seawater samples without any inward leakage of seawater during the up-cast, and that no atmospheric oxygen contaminated the seawater samples in the PRISTINE samplers after return on deck. The excellent agreement between 13 trace elements sampled with PRISTINE and sampled during the cross over occupation of US-GEOTRACES at the Bermuda BATS site (32 degrees N, 64 degrees W) shows its suitability for ultraclean trace element and isotope sampling (see accompanying paper). Abstract

The additive manufacturing technology powder bed fusion of metal with a laser beam (PBF-LB/M) is industrially established for tool-free production of complex and individualized components and products. While the in-processing is based on a layer-by-layer build-up of material, both upstream and downstream process steps (pre-processing and post-processing) are necessary for demand-oriented production. However, there are increasing concerns in the industry about the efficient and economical implementation and validation of the PBF-LB/M. Individual products for mass personalization pose a particular challenge, as they are subject to sophisticated risk management, especially in highly regulated sectors such as medical technology. Additive manufacturing using PBF-LB/M is a suitable technology but a complex one to master in this environment. A structured system for holistic decision-making concerning technical and economic feasibility, as well as quality and risk-oriented process management, is currently not available. In the context of this research, a framework is proposed that demonstrates the essential steps for the systematic implementation and validation of PBF-LB/M in two structured phases. The intention is to make process-related key performance indicators such as part accuracy, surface finish, mechanical properties, and production efficiency controllable and ensure reliable product manufacturing. The framework is then visualized and evaluated using a practice-oriented case study environment.

Abstract

Measuring temperature and salinity profiles in the world's oceans is crucial to understand ocean dynamics and its influence on the heat budget, the water cycle, the marine environment and on our climate. Since 1983 the German research vessel and icebreaker POLARSTERN has been the platform of numerous CTD deployments in the Arctic and the Antarctic. We report on a unique data collection spanning 33 years of polar CTD (conductivity, temperature, depth) data. In total 131 datasets (one dataset per cruise leg) containing data from 10063 CTD casts are now freely available at doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.860066. During this long period five CTD types with different characteristics and accuracies have been used. Therefore the instruments and processing procedures (sensor calibration, data validation etc.) are described in detail. This compilation is special not only with regard to the quantity, but also the quality of the data – the latter one being indicated for each dataset using defined quality codes. The complete data collection includes a number of repeated sections for which the quality code can be used to investigate and evaluate long-term changes. Beginning with 2010, the salinity measurements presented here are of the highest quality possible in this field owing to the introduction of the Optimare Precision Salinometer.

A significant correlation (R2 = 0.60) between salinity and DFe is observed. Using δ18O, salinity ,nutrients and total alkalinity data, the main source for the high (>2 nM) DFe concentrations in the Amundsen and Makarov Basins is identified as (Eurasian) river water, transported with the Transpolar Drift (TPD). On the North American side of the TPD, the DFe concentrations are low ( 4) above the shelf and low ( < 4) off the shelf).

Towards more rapid ultraclean sampling of deep ocean waters for trace elements, a novel rectangular frame was constructed of titanium, holding two rows of 12 samplers, as well as various sensors. The frame is deployed to deep ocean waters by an 8000 m length Kevlar wire with internal power and signal cables. Closing of each sampler is by seawater hydraulics via silicone tubings connecting each sampler with a central 24 position Multivalve. Upon recovery the complete frame with 24 samplers is placed inside an ultraclean laboratory van, where water is drawn via filters into bottles. Previously the clean sampling of ocean waters has been very time-consuming by attachment of individual ultraclean bottle samplers one by one to a metal-free (e.g. all-Kevlar) hydrowire. The novel Titan system is 3-4 times faster and permits routine collection of deep ocean sections while economizing required shiptime. In a test of the new system in November 2005 in the Canary Basin excellent low dissolved Fe concentrations (similar to 0.1to similar to 0.4nM) are consistent with values obtained of individual samplers on a simple wire, and previous values in a pilot study of 2002 in the same basin, as well as published dissolved Fe values elsewhere in the northeast Atlantic Ocean. 9. The diamond NV-center transition energies in the vicinity of an intrinsic stacking fault

Abstract

The negatively charged nitrogen vacancy (NV−) center in a diamond is a nanometer-sized defect with very sensitive properties that can be manipulated, for example, for single-molecule photoluminescence and nuclear magnetic resonance sensing, as a single photon source for quantum cryptography and as a qubit in room temperature quantum computing. To have a minimal perturbation of its properties, it is important to isolate the NV-center from other defects. One type of the extended defects that can be common in diamonds is the intrinsic stacking fault (ISF) associated with dislocations. In this work, we use density functional theory simulations to investigate how the distance between the NV− center and an ISF affects its properties, including the transition energies, spin density, and energy eigenvalues in the Kohn–Sham bandgap. We have found that the NV-center properties are only slightly perturbed when placed in the vicinity of an ISF. Even for an interdistance of only 3.8 Å between the NV-center and the ISF, the decrease in its zero phonon line (ZPL) energy is less than 6.8%. To more significantly perturb the ZPL, the NV-center has to be placed inside the stacking fault glide plane (11.3% decrease). The changes in ZPL are in the majority of cases lower than the bulk value, which can be used to guide experimental observations. We find that the NV-center is only weakly interacting with ISFs, which in addition to a small bulk conversion depth of 5 Å to a diamond surface is important for their technological use.

Abstract

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were functionalized by ferrocene through ethyleneglycol chains of different lengths (FcETGn) and the functionalized SWCNTs (f-SWCNTs) were characterized by different complementary analytical techniques. In particular, high-resolution scanning electron transmission microscopy (HRSTEM) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) analyses support that the outer tubes of the carbon-nanotube bundles were covalently grafted with FcETGn groups. This result confirms that the electrocatalytic effect observed during the oxidation of the reduced form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) co-factor by the f-SWCNTs is due to the presence of grafted ferrocene derivatives playing the role of a mediator. This work clearly proves that residual impurities present in our SWCNT sample (below 5 wt. %) play no role in the electrocatalytic oxidation of NADH. Moreover, molecular dynamic simulations confirm the essential role of the PEG linker in the efficiency of the bioelectrochemical device in water, due to the favorable interaction between the ETG units and water molecules that prevents π-stacking of the ferrocene unit on the surface of the CNTs. This system can be applied to biosensing, as exemplified for glucose detection. The well-controlled and well-characterized functionalization of essentially clean SWCNTs enabled us to establish the maximum level of impurity content, below which the f-SWCNT intrinsic electrochemical activity is not jeopardized.

Abstract

Horizontal information, as a result of a selective filtering process, are essential in younger adults’ (YA) ability to recognize human faces. Obermeyer, Kolling, Schaich, and Knopf (2012) recently reported impaired recognition of faces with horizontal information in older adults (OA) suggesting age-variant processing. Two yet unconsidered factors (stimulus age and exposure duration) that may have influenced previous results, were investigated in this study. Forty-seven YA (18-35yrs) and 49 OA (62-83yrs) were tested in a 2x2x2x2 mixed design with the between-subjects factors age group (YA vs OA) and stimulus age (young faces vs older faces) and the within-subjects factors filter (filtered (HF) faces vs unfiltered faces (UF)) and exposure duration (0.8s vs 8s). Subjects were presented morph videos between pairs of faces: A starting face gradually merged into either the previously encoded target face or a control face. As expected, results showed an increase in recognition sensitivity (d’) with longer exposure duration in YA with both younger and older HF faces. OA however were unable to recognize filtered young faces not even with increased exposure duration. Furthermore, only elderly participants showed more accurate recognition with faces of their own age relative to other-age faces (own-age bias, OAB). For YA no OAB was observed. Filtered face recognition was significantly correlated with unfiltered recognition in YA but not in OA. It is concluded, that processing of horizontal information changes at a higher age. Presenting filtered or unfiltered faces both targets convergent face-specific processing only in YA but not in OA.

For many of its uses it is desirable to have the NV-center close to the diamond surface. In this work, we use density functional theory simulations to investigate how the distance of the NV ^− center to a surface, and its orientation, affect its properties, including the zero-phonon-line. We study the three technologically important surfaces terminated with fluorine, oxygen/hydroxyl and nitrogen. Since the NV-center is charged it requires special measures to simulate within a slab-model. We use the recently proposed charging with a substitutional donor in the diamond lattice resulting in a neutral super-cell, which provides very satisfactory results. We have found that the NV-centers properties converge to bulk values already at 5 Å depth.

Abstract

Charged defects are traditionally computed by adding (subtracting) electrons for negative (positive) impurities. When using periodic boundary conditions this results in artificially charged supercells that also require a compensating background charge of the opposite sign, which makes slab supercells problematic because of an arbitrary dependence on the vacuum thickness. In this work, we test the method of using neutral supercells through the use of a substitutional electron donor (acceptor) to describe charged systems. We use density functional theory (DFT) to compare the effects of charging the well-studied NV-center in diamond by a substitutional donor nitrogen. We investigate the influence of the donor-N on the NV-center properties as a function of the distance between them, and find that they converge toward those obtained when adding an electron. We analyze the spin density and conclude that the donor-N has a zero magnetic moment, and thus, will not be seen in electron spin resonance. We validate our DFT energies through comparison to GW simulations. Charging the NV-center with a substitutional donor-N enables accurate calculations of slabs, without the ambiguity of using charged supercells. Implantation of donor-N atoms opens up the possibility to engineer NV-centers with the desired charge state for future ICT and sensor applications.
