Arctic coastal ecosystems are rapidly changing due to climate warming. This makes modeling their productivity crucially important to better understand future changes. System primary production in these systems is highest during the pronounced spring bloom, typically dominated by diatoms. Eventually the spring blooms terminate due to silicon or nitrogen limitation. Bacteria can play an important role for extending bloom duration and total CO2 fixation through ammonium regeneration. Current ecosystem models often simplify the effects of nutrient co-limitations on algal physiology and cellular ratios and simplify nutrient regeneration. These simplifications may lead to underestimations of primary production. Detailed biochemistry- and cell-based models can represent these dynamics but are difficult to tune in the environment. We performed a cultivation experiment that showed typical spring bloom dynamics, such as extended algal growth via bacterial ammonium remineralization, reduced algal growth and inhibited chlorophyll synthesis under silicate limitation, and gradually reduced nitrogen assimilation and chlorophyll synthesis under nitrogen limitation. We developed a simplified dynamic model to represent these processes. Overall, model complexity in terms of the number of parameters is comparable to the phytoplankton growth and nutrient biogeochemistry formulations in common ecosystem models used in the Arctic while improving the representation of nutrient-co-limitation-related processes. Such model enhancements that now incorporate increased nutrient inputs and higher mineralization rates in a warmer climate will improve future predictions in this vulnerable system.

As a contribution to understanding the ecological framework of protistan seasonal succession patterns, we present the weekly-to-monthly (January–October) light microscopy-based study of nano- and microplanktonic protist communities of Adventfjorden waters in 2013. In general, protist dynamics corresponded to the classic paradigm for the Arctic ice-free waters with extremely low abundance and diversity in winter, with the main abundance and chlorophyll-a peak in April-May, followed by a diverse but low abundant community during summer/autumn. However, the reference of the obtained data to the previously conducted year-round research in 2012 allows us to observe substantial variability in seasonal patterns between the two consecutive years. The most striking difference concerned the spring bloom composition and abundance, with clear domination of Phaeocystis pouchetii in Atlantified fjord waters in 2012 and Bacillariophyceae-dominated (mainly Fragilariopsis, Thalassiosira nordenskioeldii, and, in a lesser extent, also Pseudo-nitzschia seriata) bloom in 2013 when local water prevailed. On the other hand, a surprisingly high share of spring bloom taxa persisted throughout the summer/autumn of 2013 when they co-occurred with typical summer taxa (dinoflagellates and other small flagellates). Their extended growth could, at least in part, result from scarce Ciliophora throughout the season, which, in turn, can be attributed to the high grazing pressure of very numerous meroplankton and mesozooplankton. In light of this, our results may be relevant in discussions proposed for the West Spitsbergen waters link between the Atlantic water inflow and the spring bloom composition, as well as its further progression in the productive season. They also highlight the strong need for further high-resolution monitoring of annual plankton cycles and great caution when looking for phenological patterns within a single year or when interpreting short-term data.

Time series of the marine CO2 system and related parameters at the IsA Station, by Adventfjorden, Svalbard, were investigated between March 2015 and November 2017. The physical and biogeochemical processes that govern changes in total alkalinity (TA), total dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and the saturation state of the calcium carbonate mineral aragonite (ΩAr) were assessed on a monthly timescale. The major driver for TA and DIC was changes in salinity, caused by river runoff, mixing and advection. This accounted for 77 and 45%, respectively, of the overall variability. It contributed minimally to the variability in ΩAr (5%); instead, biological activity was responsible for 60% of the monthly variations. For DIC, the biological activity was also important, contributing 44%. The monthly effect of air–sea CO2 fluxes accounted for 11 and 15% of the total changes in DIC and ΩAr, respectively. Net community production (NCP) during the productive season ranged between 65 and 85 g C m−2, depending on the year and the presence of either Arctic water or transformed Atlantic water (TAW). The annual NCP as estimated from DIC consumption was 34 g C m−2 yr−1 in 2016, which was opposite in direction but similar in magnitude to the integrated annual air–sea CO2 flux (i.e., uptake of carbon from the atmosphere) of −29 g C m−2 yr−1 for the same year. The results showed that increased intrusions of TAW into Adventfjorden in the future could possibly lower the NCP, with the potential to reduce the CO2buffer capacity and ΩAr over the summer season.

To reach the goal of large-scale seaweed cultivation in Norway and the rest of Europe, new knowledge about the commercially important kelp species Saccharina latissima is needed. Efforts to maximise biomass by outplanting the seaweed in different seasons can affect seaweed quality. Here, we investigate the effects of outplanting time (February, April, and May) when cultivating S. latissima in the northern range of the species’ distribution. We studied the quantity and quality of the seaweed biomass produced in the autumn following outplanting. Effects on quantity were evaluated as seaweed frond area, relative daily growth rate (DGR) and relative daily shedding rate (DSR). Quality was evaluated by tissue content of carbon and nitrogen compounds and number of fouling epizoans. Cultivation was successful when seedlings were outplanted in both February and April, but not in May. An earlier outplanting, in February, gave a prolonged time for grow-out at sea prior to the main recruitment event of epizoans that occurred in September, thereby earlier outplanting resulted in larger frond areas. The frond area reached in September was doubled when seedlings were outplanted in February compared to April, whereas a later outplanting in April gave a higher DGR and DSR, higher carbon content, and lower amount of fouling epizoans. The outplanting season did not affect tissue nitrate concentration or internally stored nitrate. These results show that outplanting time is an important factor to consider especially for biomass yield, but also for seaweed quality, including epibiosis of the seaweed biomass.

The effect of freshwater sources on wintertime sea-ice CO2processes was studied from the glacier front to the outer Tempelfjorden, Svalbard, in sea ice, glacier ice, brine and snow. March–April 2012 was mild, and the fjord was mainly covered with drift ice, in contrast to the observed thicker fast ice in the colder April 2013. This resulted in different physical and chemical properties of the sea ice and under-ice water. Data from stable oxygen isotopic ratios and salinity showed that the sea ice at the glacier front in April 2012 contained on average 54% of frozen-in glacial meltwater. This was five times higher than in April 2013, where the ice was frozen seawater. In April 2012, the largest excess of sea-ice total alkalinity (AT), carbonate ion ([CO32−]) and bicarbonate ion concentrations ([HCO3−]) relative to salinity was mainly related to dissolved dolomite and calcite incorporated during freezing of mineral-enriched glacial water. In April 2013, the excess of these variables was mainly due to ikaite dissolution as a result of sea-ice processes. Dolomite dissolution increased sea-iceATtwice as much as ikaite and calcite dissolution, implying different buffering capacity and potential for ocean CO2uptake in a changing climate.

Source at http://dx.doi.org/10.1002/lno.10519 Zooplankton vertical migration enhances the efficiency of the ocean biological pump by translocating carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) below the mixed layer through respiration and excretion at depth. We measured C and N active transport due to diel vertical migration (DVM) in a Svalbard fjord at 79°N. Multifrequency analysis of backscatter data from an Acoustic Zooplankton Fish Profiler moored from January to September 2014, combined with plankton net data, showed that Thysanoessa spp. euphausiids made up > 90% of the diel migrant biomass. Classical synchronous DVM occurred before and after the phytoplankton bloom, leading to a mismatch with intensive primary production during the midnight sun. Zooplankton DVM resulted in C respiration of 0.9 g m−2 and ammonium excretion of 0.18 g N m−2 below 82 m depth between February and April, and 0.2 g C m−2 and 0.04 g N m−2 from 11 August to 9 September, representing > 25% and > 33% of sinking flux of particulate organic carbon and nitrogen, respectively. Such contribution of DVM active transport to the biological pump in this high-Arctic location is consistent with previous measurements in several equatorial to subarctic oceanic systems of the World Ocean. Climate warming is expected to result in tighter coupling between DVM and bloom periods, stronger stratification of the Barents Sea, and northward advection of boreal euphausiids. This may increase the role of DVM in the functioning of the biological pump on the Atlantic side of the Arctic Ocean, particularly where euphausiids are or will be prevalent in the zooplankton community.

In order to facilitate a decision on a proposed project, it is advisable to make a list of all its advantages and disadvantages, and characterize each of these in as much detail as possible. Phytoplankton phenology is a key driver of biological and chemical processes in marine ecosystems because it directly affects cycling of nutrients, the strength of the biological carbon pump, and energy transfer to higher tropic levels. However, phytoplankton time-series from the Arctic are scant, thus limiting our ability to link phytoplankton phenology to environmental variability. Kongsfjorden on the west coast of Spitsbergen is an established coastal monitoring site at the entrance to the Arctic Ocean. In this review we have compiled previously published phytoplankton investigations, chlorophyll fluorescence time-series data and unpublished phytoplankton data covering the years 2002–2014 from Kongsfjorden and the shelf outside the fjord to elaborate the most pertinent environmental factors responsible for the seasonal and inter-annual variability in phytoplankton bloom dynamics, biomass and species composition. In general, phytoplankton dynamics in Kongsfjorden follow the classic spring-bloom paradigm, with the main biomass peak in April–May dominated by spore-forming diatom species and the colony-forming haptophyte Phaeocystis pouchetii, followed by a diverse, but low biomass community characterised by dinoflagellates and small flagellates and their protozoan grazers during summer. Despite this general trend, phytoplankton phenology is subject to large inter-annual variability with no clear long-term trend. This variability can be mainly attributed to variability in the magnitude and depth of Atlantic Water (AW) inflow, sea ice cover and glacier melt-water discharge. We have shown the impact of environmental variability on phytoplankton phenology, but high-resolution monitoring of annual cycles over many years is required to resolve the ephemeral variations of phytoplankton populations in space and time against the backdrop of climate change.

Late winter-to-summer changes (April to July) in ocean acidification state, calcium carbonate (CaCO3) saturation for aragonite (Ωa) and calcite (Ωc) and biogeochemical properties were investigated in 2013 and 2014 in Kongsfjorden, Svalbard. We investigated physical (salinity, temperature) and chemical (carbonate system, nutrient) properties in the water column from the glacier front in the fjord to the west Spitsbergen shelf. The average range of Ωa in the upper 50 m in the fjord in winter was 1.59–1.74 and in summer 1.65–2.66. The lowest Ωa (1.5) was close to the reported critical threshold for aragonite-forming organisms such as the pteropod Limacina helicina. In summer 2013, Ωa, pHT and salinity were generally lower than in 2014 as a result of a larger influence of high-CO2 water from the coastal current and less Atlantic water. The inner fjord was influenced by glacial water in summer which decreased Ωa by 0.7. Biological CO2 consumption based on a winter-to summer decrease in nitrate was larger in 2014 than in 2013, suggesting more primary production in 2014. The influence of freshwater decreased Ωa by the same amount as the biological effect increased Ωa. The seasonal increase in temperature only played a minor role on the increase of Ωa. The biological effect showed more inter-annual variability than the effect of freshwater. Based on this study, we suggest that changes in the inflow of different water masses and freshwater directly influence ocean acidification state, but also indirectly affect the biological drivers of carbonate chemistry in the fjord.

Eastern Fram Strait and the shelf slope region north of Svalbard is dominated by the advection of warm, salty and nutrient-rich Atlantic Water (AW). This oceanic heat contributes to keeping the area relatively free of ice. The last years have seen a dramatic decrease in regional sea ice extent, which is expected to drive large increases in pelagic primary production and thereby changes in marine ecology and nutrient cycling. In a concerted effort, we conducted five cruises to the area in winter, spring, summer and fall of 2014, in order to understand the physical and biogeochemical controls of carbon cycling, for the first time from a year-round point of view. We document (1) the offshore location of the wintertime front between salty AW and fresher Surface Water in the ocean surface, (2) thermal convection of Atlantic Water over the shelf slope, likely enhancing vertical nutrient fluxes, and (3) the importance of ice melt derived upper ocean stratification for the spring bloom timing. Our findings strongly confirm the hypothesis that this “Atlantification,” as it has been called, of the shelf slope area north of Svalbard resulting from the advection of AW alleviates both nutrient and light limitations at the same time, leading to increased pelagic primary productivity in this region.

Seasonal and interannual variability in surface water partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) and air‐sea CO2 fluxes from a West Spitsbergen fjord (IsA Station, Adventfjorden) are presented, and the associated driving forces are evaluated. Marine CO2 system data together with temperature, salinity, and nutrients, were collected at the IsA Station between March 2015 and June 2017. The surface waters were undersaturated in pCO2 with respect to atmospheric pCO2 all year round. The effects of biological activity (primary production/respiration) followed by thermal forcing on pCO2 were the most important drivers on a seasonal scale. The ocean was a sink for atmospheric CO2 with annual air‐sea CO2 fluxes of −36 ± 2 and −31 ± 2 g C·m−2·year−1 for 2015–2016 and 2016–2017, respectively, as estimated from the month of April. Waters of an Arctic origin dominated in 2015 and were replaced in 2016 by waters of a transformed Atlantic source. The CO2 uptake rates over the period of Arctic origin waters were significantly higher (2 mmol C·m−2·day−1) than the rates of the Atlantic origin waters of the following year.

In order to investigate the effect of glacial water on the CO2 system in the fjord, we studied the variability of the total alkalinity (AT), total dissolved inorganic carbon (CT), dissolved inorganic nutrients, oxygen isotopic ratio (δ18O), and freshwater fractions from the glacier front to the outer Tempelfjorden on Spitsbergen in winter 2012 (January, March, and April) and 2013 (April) and summer/fall 2013 (September). The two contrasting years clearly showed that the influence of freshwater, mixing, and haline convection affected the chemical and physical characteristics of the fjord. The seasonal variability showed the lowest calcium carbonate saturation state (Ω) and pH values in March 2012 coinciding with the highest freshwater fractions. The highest Ω and pH were found in September 2013, mostly due to CO2 uptake during primary production. Overall, we found that increased freshwater supply decreased Ω, pH, and AT. On the other hand, we observed higher AT relative to salinity in the freshwater end-member in the mild and rainy winter of 2012 (1142 μmol kg−1) compared to AT in 2013 (526 μmol kg−1). Observations of calcite and dolomite crystals in the glacial ice suggested supply of carbonate-rich glacial drainage water to the fjord. This implies that winters with a large amount of glacial drainage water partly provide a lessening of further ocean acidification, which will also affect the air-sea CO2 exchange.

We determined the community composition of microbial eukaryotes in an Arctic under-ice spring bloom north of Svalbard using metabarcoding of DNA and RNA from the hypervariable V4 region of 18S nrDNA. At the two stations studied, the photosynthetic biomass was dominated by protists >3 μm and was concentrated in the upper 70–80 m, above the thermocline and halocline. Hierarchical cluster analyses as well as ordination analyses showed a distinct clustering of the microbial eukaryote communities according to a combination of water mass and local environmental characteristics. While samples collected in the surface mixed layer differed distinctly between the two sites, the deeper communities collected in Atlantic Water were fairly similar despite being geographically distant. The differentiation of the microbial eukaryote communities of the upper mixed water was probably driven by local development and advection, while the lack of such differentiation in the communities of Atlantic Water reflects the homogenizing effect of water currents on microbial communities.

Dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) can account for a significant portion of total nitrogen in some aquatic environments, and many species of phytoplankton are able to scavenge nitrogen from this pool especially when inorganic nitrogen is limiting. Emiliania huxleyi (Lohmann) H. W. Hay et H. Mohler is able to use various forms of DON for growth, including several amino acids, purines, and pyrimidines. A cell-surface protein up-regulated in the absence of inorganic nitrogen, NRP1, is hypothesized to play a role in the metabolism of one or more of these organic nitrogen forms. Here, the genomic and cDNA sequence of NRP1 is reported. Structural predictions based on the amino acid sequence suggest a pyridoxal-5'-phosphate-dependent enzyme that may have a role in acquiring nitrogen from amino acids. Further evidence for the function of NRP1 is measured in spent media from nitrogen-limited cultures, which contain NRP1 and have glutaminase and formamidase activity. Field studies using an antibody to NRP1 show that it is expressed in E. huxleyi during bloom conditions in a Norwegian fjord.

The marine ecosystem in Kongsfjorden (79 N), a glacial fjord in Svalbard, is to a large extent well known with regard to hydrography, mesozooplankton and higher trophic levels. Research on primary production and lower trophic levels is still scare and especially investigations from winter and spring periods. The spring bloom dynamics in Kongsfjordenwere investigated in 2002. The development in nutrient conditions, phytoplankton, protozoans and primary production were followed from 15 April until 22 May. The winter/ spring in 2002was categorized as a cold yearwith sea ice cover and water masses dominated by local winter-cooled water. The spring bloom started around 18 April and lasted until the middle ofMay. The bloom probably peaked in late April, but break-up of sea ice made it impossible to sample frequently in this period. Diatoms dominated the phytoplankton assemblage. We estimated the total primary production during the spring bloom in 2002 to range 27–35 g C m-2. There was a mismatch situation between the mesozooplankton and the phytoplankton spring bloom in 2002.

Stable isotope values are useful for elucidating C and N cycling and pathways in marine and aquatic ecosystems. Variations in the base-line isotope values, the δ13C and δ15N values of phytoplankton, put constraints on their usefulness as tracers for trophic interactions and sources of organic matter in food web studies, however. We investigated the C and N stable isotope values of suspended particulate organic matter in relation to uptake of total dissolved inorganic carbon and nitrate, chlorophyll a concentration and the isotope composition of dissolved inorganic carbon in an Arctic marine environment (northern Barents Sea) in order to improve the understanding of factors regulating the variation in stable isotope values at the base of the marine food web. The stable isotope values of water-column suspended particulate organic carbon (δ13Corg) and nitrogen (δ15Norg) varied from −28.3‰ to −20.2‰ and 2.9‰ to 8.3‰, respectively, among stations sampled during spring and summer. δ13Corg was not linearly related to carbon uptake, but the values were on average 3‰ higher at stations in a late-bloom stage, characterised by higher carbon uptake compared to early-bloom stations. Accumulation of phytoplankton biomass had a strong impact on δ13Corg values, reflected in a positive relationship between δ13Corg and chlorophyll a concentration. δ15Norg was positively related to the percentage of nitrate taken up from initial (winter) concentrations. These results indicate a strong relationship between bloom progression and isotope composition of particulate organic C and N pools. Synoptic data on stable isotope compositions, nutrient concentrations and phytoplankton biomass therefore improve the interpretation of isotope values when these are compared across pools with different turnover times, such as phytoplankton and consumers or suspended and sedimentary organic matter.

The contribution from small and large cells to biomass and primary production was investigated during three cruises to the marginal ice zone in the northern Barents Sea in 2003, 2004 and 2005. Chlorophyll a biomass and primary production were size-fractionated at 10 μm. Particulate primary production was measured using 14C and 24 h in situ incubations. Twelve stations were successfully sampled and the stations were grouped into three different stages of a phytoplankton bloom. No pre- or post-bloom situations were observed. The highest integrated chl a biomass and primary production were 588 mg chl a m−2 and 1475 mg C m−2 d−1 measured during peak bloom situations in May 2005. In the early and late bloom groups the chl a biomass and primary production were dominated by small cells, while large cells dominated in the peak bloom group. Most of the carbon was produced during the peak bloom dominated by large cells. When seen over the stations that were size-fractionated the small cells contributed with 46% of the total carbon production (large+small cells). The importance of small cells in the carbon production is emphasized and small cells should not be neglected during phytoplankton blooms in marginal ice zones.

A review of silicon, with emphasis on its forms, uptake, dissolution and role in marine primary production, is given. The importance of silicon in marine food webs is discussed, as well as the concentrations of silicon in various areas and the importance of changing N:Si:P ratios. The methodology for measuring silicate transformations has recently been improved by the introduction of the highly enriched 32Si isotope. Results from uptake experiments using 32Si in nutrient rich coastal water and in open ocean are presented. The uptake kinetic experiments showed that the silicate uptake usually is unsaturated. We propose that closer attention in the future should be paid to the importance of balanced nutrient composition as well as nutrient supply dynamics for the development of eutrophication versus efficient trophic transfer and fish production in nutrient enriched systems. Close attention should also be paid to the mechanisms that reduce the inputs of silicate to coastal waters.
