Abstract

Spacecraft‐to‐spacecraft radio occultations experiments are being conducted at Mars between Mars Express (MEX) and Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO), the first ever extensive inter‐spacecraft occultations at a planet other than Earth. Here we present results from the first 83 such occultations, conducted between 2 Nov 2020 and 5th of July 2023. Of these, 44 observations have to‐date resulted in the extraction of vertical electron density profiles. These observations are the successful results of a major feasibility study conducted by the European Space Agency to use pre‐existing relay communication equipment for radio science purposes. Mutual radio occultations have numerous advantages over traditional spacecraft‐to‐ground station occultations. In this work, we demonstrate how raw data are transformed into electron density values and validated with models and other instruments. Plain Language Summary: Radio occultation is a measuring technique involving the passage of a signal through an atmosphere, during which we observe how much the signal bends. This bending effect is precisely measured as a frequency shift. Typically, this technique is employed by transmitting a signal from a satellite orbiting a planet to a ground station on Earth. However, in this article, we explore an alternative on this measurement approach known as mutual RO. Here, both the transmitter and receiver of the signal are positioned in orbit around the same foreign planet, creating a unique scenario. Specifically, we utilized two European Space Agency satellites: Mars Express and ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter, and have conducted a total of 83 experiments. Within this article, we present the methodology, processing and outcomes of select experiments, underlining their reliability through comparisons with models and data from other instruments. In September 1996, a dust/debris detector: GORID was launched into the geostationary (GEO) region as a piggyback instrument on the Russian Express-2 telecommunications spacecraft. The instrument began its normal operation in April 1997 and ended its mission in July 2002. The goal of this work was to use GORID's particle data to identify and separate the space debris to interplanetary dust particles (IDPs) in GEO, to more finely determine the instrument's measurement characteristics and to derive impact fluxes. While the physical characteristics of the GORID impacts alone are insufficient for a reliable distinction between debris and interplanetary dust, the temporal behavior of the impacts are strong enough indicators to separate the populations based on clustering. Non-cluster events are predominantly interplanetary, while cluster events are debris. The GORID mean flux distributions (at mass thresholds which are impact speed dependent) for IDPs, corrected for dead time, are 1.35x10^{-4} m^{-2} s^{-1} using a mean detection rate: 0.54 d^{-1}, and for space debris are 6.1x10^{-4} m^{-2} s^{-1} using a mean detection rate: 2.5 d^{-1}. Beta-meteoroids were not detected. 6. Io revealed in the Jovian dust streams

Abstract

The Jovian dust streams are high-speed bursts of submicron-sized particles traveling in the same direction from a source in the Jovian system. Since their discovery in 1992, they have been observed by three spacecraft: Ulysses, Galileo and Cassini. The source of the Jovian dust streams is dust from Io's volcanoes. The charged and traveling dust stream particles have particular signatures in frequency space and in real space. The frequency-transformed Galileo dust stream measurements show different signatures, varying orbit-to-orbit during Galileo's first 29 orbits around Jupiter. Time-frequency analysis demonstrates that Io is a localized source of charged dust particles. Aspects of the particles' dynamics can be seen in the December-2000 joint Galileo-Cassini dust stream measurements. To match the travel times, the smallest dust particles could have the following range of parameters: radius: 6nm, density: 1.35-1.75gr/cm$^3$, sulfur charging conditions, which produce dust stream speeds: 220|450km/sec (Galileo|Cassini) and charge potentials: 5.5|6.3Volt (Galileo|Cassini)., Comment: 8 pages, 5 postscript figures, latex, uses esapub.cls, aa.bst. 7. Techniques for Galactic Dust Measurements in the Heliosphere

Abstract

Galactic interstellar dust (ISD) is the major ingredient in planetary formation. However, information on this important material has been extremely limited. Recently the Ulysses dust detector has identified and measured interstellar dust outside 1.8~AU from the Sun at ecliptic latitudes above $50^{\circ}$. Inside this distance it could not reliably distinguish interstellar from interplanetary dust. Modeling the Ulysses data suggests that up to 30 % of dust flux with masses above $10^{-16}\rm kg$ at 1~AU is of interstellar origin. From the Hiten satellite in high eccentric orbit about the Earth there are indications that ISD indeed reaches the Earth's orbit. Two new missions carrying dust detectors, Cassini and Stardust, will greatly increase our observational knowledge. In this paper we briefly review instruments used on these missions and compare their capabilities. The Stardust mission [{\em Brownlee et al.}, 1996] will analyze the local interstellar dust population by an in-situ chemical analyzer and collect ISD between 2 and 3~AU from the Sun. The dust analyzer on the Cassini mission will determine the interstellar dust flux outside Venus' orbit and will provide also some compositional information. Abstract

Despite the growing importance of planetary Space Weather forecasting and radiation protection for science and robotic exploration and the need for accurate Space Weather monitoring and predictions, only a limited number of spacecraft have dedicated instrumentation for this purpose. However, every spacecraft (planetary or astronomical) has hundreds of housekeeping sensors distributed across the spacecraft, some of which can be useful to detect radiation hazards produced by solar particle events. In particular, energetic particles that impact detectors and subsystems on a spacecraft can be identified by certain housekeeping sensors, such as the Error Detection and Correction (EDAC) memory counters, and their effects can be assessed. These counters typically have a sudden large increase in a short time in their error counts that generally match the arrival of energetic particles to the spacecraft. We investigate these engineering datasets for scientific purposes and perform a feasibility study of solar energetic particle event detections using EDAC counters from seven European Space Agency Solar System missions: Venus Express, Mars Express, ExoMars-Trace Gas Orbiter, Rosetta, BepiColombo, Solar Orbiter, and Gaia. Six cases studies, in which the same event was observed by different missions at different locations in the inner Solar System are analyzed. The results of this study show how engineering sensors, for example, EDAC counters, can be used to infer information about the solar particle environment at each spacecraft location. Therefore, we demonstrate the potential of the various EDAC to provide a network of solar particle detections at locations where no scientific observations of this kind are available.

Abstract

A publisher correction to this article was published on 17 April 2019, Global dust storms on Mars are rare1,2 but can affect the Martian atmosphere for several months. They can cause changes in atmospheric dynamics and inflation of the atmosphere3, primarily owing to solar heating of the dust3. In turn, changes in atmospheric dynamics can affect the distribution of atmospheric water vapour, with potential implications for the atmospheric photochemistry and climate on Mars4. Recent observations of the water vapour abundance in the Martian atmosphere during dust storm conditions revealed a high-altitude increase in atmospheric water vapour that was more pronounced at high northern latitudes5,6, as well as a decrease in the water column at low latitudes7,8. Here we present concurrent, high-resolution measurements of dust, water and semiheavy water (HDO) at the onset of a global dust storm, obtained by the NOMAD and ACS instruments onboard the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter. We report the vertical distribution of the HDO/H2O ratio (D/H) from the planetary boundary layer up to an altitude of 80 kilometres. Our findings suggest that before the onset of the dust storm, HDO abundances were reduced to levels below detectability at altitudes above 40 kilometres. This decrease in HDO coincided with the presence of water-ice clouds. During the storm, an increase in the abundance of H2O and HDO was observed at altitudes between 40 and 80 kilometres. We propose that these increased abundances may be the result of warmer temperatures during the dust storm causing stronger atmospheric circulation and preventing ice cloud formation, which may confine water vapour to lower altitudes through gravitational fall and subsequent sublimation of ice crystals3. Abstract

A publisher correction to this article was published on 17 April 2019, The detection of methane on Mars has been interpreted as indicating that geochemical or biotic activities could persist on Mars today1. A number of different measurements of methane show evidence of transient, locally elevated methane concentrations and seasonal variations in background methane concentrations2–5. These measurements, however, are difficult to reconcile with our current understanding of the chemistry and physics of the Martian atmosphere6,7, which—given methane’s lifetime of several centuries—predicts an even, well mixed distribution of methane1,6,8. Here we report highly sensitive measurements of the atmosphere of Mars in an attempt to detect methane, using the ACS and NOMAD instruments onboard the ESA-Roscosmos ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter from April to August 2018. We did not detect any methane over a range of latitudes in both hemispheres, obtaining an upper limit for methane of about 0.05 parts per billion by volume, which is 10 to 100 times lower than previously reported positive detections2,4. We suggest that reconciliation between the present findings and the background methane concentrations found in the Gale crater4 would require an unknown process that can rapidly remove or sequester methane from the lower atmosphere before it spreads globally. © 2019, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Limited., ExoMars is the space mission of ESA and Roscosmos. Abstract

International audience; ESA’s Venus Express orbiter has achieved a mission lifetime of eight years, well in excess of its original nominal science mission duration of 500 days. The science payload was selected to focus on atmospheric investigations from the deep atmosphere - probed using near-infrared spectral windows - up to the mesosphere and exosphere. While initial analyses focussed on first detections and mean atmospheric states, subsequent analyses have revealed variability on timescales ranging from diurnal to seasonal to multiannual. In the upper atmosphere, VEx/VIRTIS shows dramatic maps of O_{2} nightglow spatial distribution changing location on scales of minutes to hours, as well as gravity waves high in polar regions high above the core of the polar vortex. Thermospheric and mesospheric densities, revealed through solar and stellar occultation as well as by the VEx Atmospheric Drag Experiment, are observed to vary by over 100% on a day-to-day basis. The Southern polar vortex was revealed to change shape on a day-to-day basis, taking sometimes the previously observed wavenumber-2 shape (“polar dipole”) but changing rapidly also to wavenumber-1 or wavenumber-3 shapes. In the lower / middle cloud layer Venus Express was able to map the formation and dissipation of regions of thin and thick cloud on timescales of hours to days. But it is the long-term changes on periods of several years which are perhaps the most intriguing. Mean zonal wind speed at low latitudes at cloud-top altitude, as revealed by cloud tracking in UV imagery, is found to have increased by 30% over the period 2007-2013. Mesospheric sulphur dioxide abundances were found to increase fourfold during 2006-2008 followed by a tenfold decrease in 2008-2012, echoing a pattern seen earlier from Pioneer Venus and Hubble observations. There may also be associated long-term changes in the UV albedo of Venus - this is still under investigation. But to date no long-term trend has been observed in the abundance of other trace gas species, notably of water vapour, which might be expected to vary alongside mesospheric sulphur dioxide abundances. Explaining this combination of observations provides constraints and challenges for our understanding of the Venus atmosphere. In this presentation we review the highlights of Venus Express atmospheric science results, with particular focus on temporal variability.

International audience; Since April 2006 ESA’s Venus Express has been performing a global survey of the remarkably dense, cloudy, and dynamic atmosphere of our near neighbour. The mission delivers comprehensive data on the temperature structure, the atmospheric composition, the cloud morphology, the atmospheric dynamics, the solar wind interaction and the escape processes. Vertical profiles of the atmospheric temperature show strong latitudinal trend in the mesosphere and upper troposphere correlated with changes in the cloud top structure and indicate convective instability in the main cloud deck at 50-60 km. Observations reveal significant latitudinal variations and temporal changes in the global cloud top morphology, which modulate the solar energy deposited in the atmosphere. The cloud top altitude varies from 72 km in the low and middle latitudes to 64 km in the polar region, correlated with decrease of the aerosol scale height from 4±1.6 km to 1.7±2.4 km, marking vast polar depression. UV imaging shows for the first time the middle latitudes and polar regions in unprecedented detail. The eye of the Southern polar vortex was found to be a strongly variable feature with complex dynamics. Solar occultation observations and deep atmosphere spectroscopy in spectral transparency windows mapped the distribution of the major trace gases H _{2}O, SO _{2}, CO, COS and their variations above and below the clouds, revealing key features of the dynamical and chemical processes at work. Tracking motions of cloud features provided the most complete characterization of the mean atmospheric circulation as well as its variability. Low and middle latitudes show an almost constant zonal wind speed at the cloud tops and vertical wind shear of 2-3 m/s/km. The zonal wind speed increased from 84±20 m/s to 110±16 m/s over the course of the mission. Towards the pole, the wind speed drops quickly and the vertical shear vanishes. The meridional poleward wind ranges from 0 at equator to about 15 m/s in the middle latitudes. Comparison of the thermal wind field derived from temperature sounding to the cloud-tracked winds confirms the validity of cyclostrophic balance, at least in the latitude range from 30S to 70S. The observations are supported by development of General Circulation Models. Non-LTE infrared emissions in the lines of O _{2}, NO, CO _{2}, OH originating near the mesopause at 95-105 km were detected and mapped. The data show that the peak intensity occurs in average close to the anti-solar point for O _{2} emission, which is consistent with current models of the thermospheric circulation. For almost complete solar cycle the Venus Express instruments continuously monitoring the induced magnetic field and plasma environment established the global escape rates being 3•10 (24) s (-1) , 7•10 (24) s (-1) , 8•10 (22) s (-1) for O (+) , H (+) , and He (+) ions and identified the main acceleration process. For the first time it was shown that the reconnection process takes place in the tail of a non-magnetized body. It was confirmed that the lightning tentatively detected by PVO indeed occurs on Venus. The thermal mapping of the surface in the near-IR spectral “windows” on the night side indicated the presence of recent volcanism on the planet, as do the high and variable SO _{2} abundances.

40. Silence on Shangri-La: Attenuation of Huygens acoustic signals suggests surface volatiles

Abstract

Objective. Characterize and understand acoustic instrument performance on the surface of Titan. Methods. The Huygens probe measured the speed of sound in Titan's atmosphere with a 1 MHz pulse time-of-flight transducer pair near the bottom of the vehicle. We examine the fraction of pulses correctly received as a function of time. Results. This system returned good data from about 11 km altitude, where the atmosphere became thick enough to effectively transmit the sound, down to the surface just before landing: these data have been analyzed previously. After an initial transient at landing, the instrument operated nominally for about 10 min, recording pulses much as during descent. The fraction of pulses detected then declined and the transmitted sound ceased to be detected altogether, despite no indication of instrument or probe configuration changes. Conclusions. The most likely explanation appears to be absorption of the signal by polyatomic gases with relaxation losses at the instrument frequency, such as ethane, acetylene and carbon dioxide. These vapors, detected independently by the GCMS instrument, were evolved from the surface material by the warmth leaking from the probe, and confirm the nature of the surface materials as 'damp' with a cocktail of volatile compounds. Some suggestions for future missions are considered.

Abstract

International audience; During the descent of the HUYGENS Probe through the atmosphere of Titan, January 14th, 2005, the permittivity, Waves and Altimetry (PWA), a subsystem of the HUYGENS Atmospheric Structure Instrument (HASI) detected an ionized layer around the altitude of 60 km with two different instruments, the Relaxation Probe (RP) and the Mutual Impedance Probe (MIP). For both instruments a more detailed data analysis, including unforeseen environmental effects, was necessary to reach precise quantitative estimations of the electrical conductivity. The present work is dedicated to the MIP data analysis. New laboratory tests have been performed to correct and validate the calibration data. Temperature effects have been included and two different numerical models of MIP electrodes and circuits in the HUYGENS body environment have been used. The effect of motion of HUYGENS in the ionized atmosphere that was neglected in the first analysis is revealed and analytical estimations of this effect allow to derive more accurate values of the conductivity. The final results are discussed, compared to the RP results and electron density profiles are deduced showing more precisely the lower ionized layer.

International audience; By the time of the COSPAR Assembly Venus Express will be already 3 months in orbit and about 40 days in nominal mission The mission science plan includes pericentre nadir observations off-pericentre and apocentre mosaics limb observations solar stellar and Earth occultation These observation modes will be extensively used from the very beginning of the mission The talk will show how these operations are combined together in order to fully exploit the spacecraft and payload capabilities and to achieve the mission goals Due attention will be paid to synergy between experiments in addressing the main science themes

International audience; The Venus Express spacecraft arrives to Venus and will be inserted into orbit on 11 April 2006 Venus Express will carry out an in depth study of the atmosphere of Venus and will study the plasma environment and its intearaction with the solar wind as well as investigating selected surface related topics The paylod is composed of seven instruments ASPERA -an instrument for in situ detection and characterisation of energetic neutral and charged particles MAG - a dual sensor fluxgate magnetometer PFS - an IR Fourier spectrometer VIRTIS - a mapping UV-vis-IR spectrometer Spicav SOIR - an UV-IR stellar and solar occultation spectrometer VMC - a four band wide angle camera and VeRa - a radio science experiment including occultation and bistatic radar functions This paper will give an overview of the mission and briefly summarize the first results from Venus orbit as an introduction to the invited talks to follow by the PIs of the respective instruments
