En ökad digitalisering inom högre utbildning, med tillkomsten av digitala examinationssystem och AI, har förändrat förutsättningarna för universitetslärares examinationspraktik och bedömningsarbete. Det väcker frågor om hur val av digitala examinationer motiveras, konstrueras och uppfattas av universitetslärare vid olika fakulteter inom högre utbildning. Studiens syfte är att undersöka hur och med vilken variation examinationer utformas digitalt, multimodalt och kunskapsmässigt i kurser på tre olika professionsprogram inom högre utbildning. Studien utgår både från ett designorienterat multimodalt perspektiv och ett kunskapstaxonomiskt perspektiv för att uppmärksamma studenters möjligheter att representera olika aspekter av kunskap inom examination. Genom textanalyser av styrdokument och examinationer undersöks hur examinationer i variation integrerar kunskapsmässiga aspekter digitalt och multimodalt samt vilka potentialer för studenters kognitiva aktiviteter och agens som impliceras genom examinationernas design. Vidare görs intervjuer med universitetslärare för att undersöka vilka möjligheter och utmaningar som erfars avseende val av bedömnings- och examinationsform. Vi kommer dessutom uppmärksamma likheter och skillnader inom och mellan utbildningsprogram. Preliminära resultat visar att det förekommer en kunskapsmässig progression inom programmen samt en kunskapsmässig, multimodal och digital variation mellan de olika fakulteternas program.

Den första delstudien avser att besvara hur och med vilken variation digitala examinationer designas med fokus på kunskapsmässiga förväntningar, användning av multimodalitet och semiotiska resurser. Studien utgår både från ett socialsemiotiskt multimodalt perspektiv på meningsskapande (Kress, 2010; Björklund Boistrup & Selander,2022) och ett kunskapstaxonomiskt perspektiv (Anderson och Krathwohls, 2001) för att uppmärksamma studenters möjligheter att representera olika aspekter av kunskap inom examination. Den andra delstudien bidrar till förståelse för universitetslärares synsätt på bedömning och examination vid fem fakulteter och deras erfarenheter av möjligheter och utmaningar med val av bedömnings- och examinationsformer. I resultatet kommer vi att visa hur digitala examinationer integrerar aspekter av digitala multimodala texter och hur olika designval av digital examination uppfattas av universitetslärare och vad för slags kunskapersom de ser som relevanta vid digital examination inom olika fakulteter i Sverige.

The aim of this on-going practice-based study is partly to explore university teachers' design of digital examinations at five faculties in higher education, and partly to explore university teachers' perspectives on and perceived experiences of varied examination forms, question constructions, assessment and rating practices. This study is framed by theories of disciplinary literacies and assessment (Gee, 1991; Krathwohl, 2002) and by social semiotic multimodal perspective on meaning making (Kress, 2010; Björklund Boistrup & Selander, 2022). The method is qualitative and data is narrowed into two sub-studies; the first sub-study regards digital examinations such as constructions of closed-book exams, project work (open-book and open-web) as well as adaptive tests or other AI-related assignments. This sub-study enables to elucidate how and with what variety of assessment tasks are multimodally designed in courses within and between different educational programs and between faculties. The research questions concern what types of knowledge and cognitive processes are demanded and what potentials (affordances) for students' meaning-making are realised in the design of digital examinations. Data in the first sub-study comprise multimodal texts, which will be derived from various digital examinations. These texts will be analysed multimodally based on the notions of design, affordance and knowledge representation (Björklund Boistrup & Selander, 2022). Knowledge taxonomies such as Krathwohl, 2002 will be used to draw attention to potentials for students to represent different aspects of knowledge. This article explores how arguments are made in student essays through the use of writing and visual resources. The data set comprises 54 essays with a passing grade from students in their final year of upper secondary school in Sweden. The data is analysed using a multimodal approach to knowledge representation on arguments in essays, involving analysis of textual composition and content in both written text and visual resources. The study gives an insight into how students design essays in relation to academic requirements, how their arguments realise epistemological commitments, and what affordances are given through the use of writing and visual resources. The results reveal that academic argumentation varies considerably between the essays. There is an overrepresentation of written and declarative knowledge in the essays, where the arguments are grounded in various web-based sources, and visualisations are used for making conceptualisation and classification more salient in writing. Both written and visual resources offer affordances in the making of arguments on the bases of the modes for communication. This article concludes that there are many high demands of knowledge defined for the task of preparing for higher education, which are not easily represented in the students’ arguments in essays.

This chapter sheds light on a cross-institutional collaborative design process between museum professionals and university researchers. It draws upon a study of a series of design workshops at a large natural history museum in Sweden, where professionals at the museum and educational researchers from the university interacted and reflected upon critical incidents in the exhibition development process.

Den här boken ger en introduktion till multimodal analys av klassrumsinteraktion, och vägledning i socialsemiotik respektive etnometodologisk samtalsanalys. De två utgångspunkterna kan antas för att studera interaktion och skapa underlag för analys och tolkning av fenomen som undervisning, lärande och bedömning samt sociala relationer (fenomen som uppmärksammas inom UVK-kurser). Boken redogör för forskningsprocessens olika steg såsom problemformulering, metoder för datainsamling och analys och erbjuder särskilt verktyg för att genomföra praktiknära studier på vetenskaplig grund. I boken presenteras hur två skilda teoretiska och metodologiska utgångspunkter resulterar i olika undersökningsbara frågor, begreppsanvändning och analysmodeller för studier av interaktion. Här uppmärksammas vikten av ett multimodalt perspektiv på interaktion då språkliga, kroppsliga och materiella aspekter får betydelser för analys och tolkning av olika fenomen.

This article explores how the teacher is positioned and legitimised in the Swedish Schools Inspectorate’squality audit reports. Using Foucauldian discourse analysis, two main subject positions are identified:activity-based subject positions where the teacher is constructed as an active actor, and competence- and responsibility-based subject positions where the teacher is constructed both as important for the students’results, and as an individual in need of guidance. The teacher is positioned as a professional with limited competence. The reports show ambivalence regarding teachers’position, which could be considered as delegitimising the teaching profession.

Digital teknik för in nya möjligheter i svenskämnet, som exempelvis multimodala inslag och hypertexter, men ställer också förändrade krav både på elevers läsning, design och utvärdering av texter och lärares undervisning. Förändringar i läroplan och styrdokument tyder på en önskan om att elever ska vara digitalt textkompetenta. Genom en metatolkande ansats har ett urval av aktuell svensk forskning på området reanalyserats. Syftet är att problematisera och synliggöra de möjligheter och utmaningar den digitala tidsåldern ställer på elever och lärare när det gäller att utveckla digitala textkompetenser. Analysen bygger på studier som spänner över grund- och gymnasieskola och behandlar frågor som rör elevers lärprocesser och lärares beredskap till handledning, stöttning och bedömning när elever söker, tolkar, läser, skapar och hanterar digitala, multimodala texter. Analysen indikerar att elever behöver stöd i att värdera och tolka information samt att designa texter multimodalt. Den visar dessutom att lärare är i behov av redskap för att uppfatta och värdera digitala, multimodala textkompetenser. Kursplanerevideringarna avseende digitalisering uppvisar ett tekniskt perspektiv på användning av digitala verktyg snarare än kvalitativa aspekter av elevernas multimodala textarbete. Konsekvensen blir att lärare,oavsett årskurs eller ämne, har svårt att relatera elevers kunskapsproduktioner till kunskapsmålen i kursplanerna. Det pekar i sin tur på ett behov av att utveckla nya sorters kvalitetsindikatorer för bedömning och betygssättning gällande digital multimodal textanvändning. Om lärare och elever har en gemensam förståelse för digitala, multi-modala texter, kan det utgöra en grund för att forma mer fokuserade och medvetna samtal om kvalitet i digitalt utformat innehåll.

This article presents a meta-interpretative synthesis of contrasting research studies about methodological and theoretical challenges for Swedish preschool teachers in systematic quality development work. The first challenge involves an awareness of producing documentation from different levels of preschool work. The second challenge concerns critical reflection of multi-documentation. The third challenge focuses on an awareness of theoretical approaches which can allow a deeper understanding of quality within preschool work. This article proposes that, even if there are tensions and epistemologically different interests in many of the methods of evaluation used in preschools today, there is a need for comprehensive methods and recurring reflections that places preschools’ pedagogical work in an ongoing process of developing quality.

Academic writing skills are crucial when students, e.g., in teacher education programs, write their undergraduate theses. A multi-modal web-based and self-regulated learning resource on academic writing was developed, using texts, hypertext, moving images, podcasts and templates. A study, using surveys and a focus group, showed that students used the learning resource on numerous occasions, a resource reachable outside in-person mentor sessions. Students declared that the resources had been important for finishing their degree projects. Mentors highlighted structure, multidisciplinary overview and linking possibilities. Using digital learning resources supporting students' academic writing is doubtless a developmental area in higher education.

Införandet av digital teknologi i skolan förändrar såväl undervisningens uppläggning och genomförande som elevernas sätt att bearbeta kunskap. Inte minst skrivandet påverkas. I linje med ett vidgat textbegrepp kan vi idag tala om ett vidgat skrivbegrepp, som bl.a. innefattar urval av texter och komposition av verbaltexter och bildelement m.m. Även om skrivforskning pågått länge, är forskning om multimodalt skrivande ur ett didaktiskt perspektiv ännu inte särskilt omfattande. I den här artikeln analyseras svenska gymnasieelevers representationer i loggböcker, rapporter och muntliga presentationer inom ramen för gymnasieskolans projektarbete.

The aim of this dissertation is to study the social interaction of teachers and students, and their reflections on this interaction. This is done in order to illuminate opportunities and constraints of communication and learning in two different environments within distance education – in the classroom and in a computer-based network environment. The empirical data were collected in a distance learning course in a Swedish upper secondary school for adults. The research process was influenced by ethnography in the sense that data were obtained by field observation, video recordings, informal and formal individual interviews and observation of written computer communication. The recorded audio and visual data were transcribed. The data were analysed by the application of concepts such as: activities, conversational topics, primary speaker/ writer, secondary speaker/writer, hearer/reader, intersubjectivity, alterity, symmetry and asymmetry. The data were interpreted through the sociocultural framework drawn from Vygotskian and Neo-Vygotskian theories. The results from the study in the classroom show the creation of a number of different activities, which reflected patterns of participation. Many of the conversational topics in the classroom environment later appeared in different activities in the computer-based network environment. However, the topics from the computerized communication seldom resurfaced in the classroom environment. The results also show a relatively homogenous pattern of communication in the computer-based network environment. The majority of the contributions were related to tasks and assessment issues. The students often contributed with subjective texts, which were individual presentations of their experiences. Many contributions failed to involve different levels of alterity, and few questions were asked for the genuine purpose of seeking the other person’s opinion.
