Abstract

Quasi‐tetrahedral o‐azophenylboronic acid (azoB‐ROH), which contains the protic solvent ROH, is a key species in the colorimetric sensing of saccharides by o‐azophenylboronic acid (azoB). In this study, we compared the reactivity of azoB‐ROH with that of trigonal azoB and tetrahedral o‐azophenylboronate (azoB‐OH−), and clarified the reaction mechanism of azoB‐ROH with cis‐1,2‐cyclopentanediol and D‐glucose. Analysis of the kinetics of the reactions of azoB with cis‐1,2‐cyclopentanediol and D‐glucose in DMSO:water = 1:9 and azoB with cis‐1,2‐cyclopentanediol in tetrahydrofuran containing a small amount of methanol revealed that there was not much difference in the reactivity of azoB‐H2O and azoB‐OH−, although the reactivity of azoB was higher than that of azoB‐MeOH, that is, the reaction mechanism of azoB‐H2O was essentially the same as that of azoB‐OH−. Abstract

Recent advances in neuroendoscopic surgery have led to the minimally invasive treatment of brain abscesses using various endoscopy techniques. The endoscopic diving technique (EDT) involving the formation of fluid lenses to improve the visibility of the endoscope has been reported to be useful in the endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) for pituitary and midline cranial base lesions. Here, we report a case of brain abscess treated endoscopically using EDT in cylinder surgery. A 29-year-old man with 11q trisomy syndrome developed a fever and progressive right hemiparesis was observed. A diagnosis of a brain abscess was made based on neuroradiological imaging, and endoscopic irrigation and drainage with EDT via a transparent endoscopic sheath were performed, which provided a clear operative field and allowed satisfactory irrigation without bacterial contamination. The bacterium identified by PCR was Streptococcus intermedius, and antibiotic therapy was administered. Postoperatively, his symptoms gradually improved. This is the first technical case report describing the clinical experience of EDT in brain abscess surgery. 30. A rare pure intraventricular hemorrhage caused by ruptured internal carotid artery-anterior choroidal artery aneurysm: a case report and literature review

Abstract

Although intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) frequently develops secondary to intraparenchymal or subarachnoid hemorrhage, pure IVH―non-traumatic spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage confined to the cerebral ventricular system―is rare. Moreover, pure IVH caused by ruptured proximal aneurysm is an extremely rare but life-threatening condition. Herein, we present a case of pure IVH due to a ruptured internal carotid artery -anterior choroidal artery (ICA-AChA) aneurysm and review related literature. A 77-year-old man presenting with altered mental status was hospitalized due to a massive pure IVH with ventriculomegaly. The patient was conservatively managed because his consciousness level improved. On the following day, computed tomography angiography revealed a right ICA-AChA aneurysm embedded in the temporal lobe adjacent to the anterior part of the inferior horn of the lateral ventricle, which was consistent with the hemorrhagic origin. Coil embolization of the aneurysm was successfully performed, and the postprocedural course was uneventful. To date, only a few cases have described pure IVH caused by a ruptured proximal aneurysm. If the ruptured proximal aneurysm remains unnoticed, catastrophic rehemorrhage may occur. Aneurysm obliteration should precede the treatment of acute hydrocephalus. Abstract

Intracranially located teratomas usually involve midline brain structures. However, they rarely occur in adults. A 26-year-old woman presented with a growing intracranial mass lesion in the left sphenoid ridge without neurological deficits. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed homogenous hyperintensities without contrast enhancement. The patient underwent gross total excision of the soft, yellowish sphenoid ridge tumor with no cystic component. The surgery was uneventful, with no intraoperative complications. Histological analysis revealed a mature teratoma. She attended regular outpatient neuroradiology follow-up appointments. The present case is an unusual example of a mature teratoma with regard to location, neuroimaging ap-pearance, macroscopic intraoperative findings, histological tumor subtype, and patient age and sex., This is an Open Access article distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License. Abstract

Various organic compound-based chemosensors for adenosine triphosphate (ATP) have been reported; however, the conventional designs have problems with their water solubility, selectivity, and sensitivity. Herein, a supramolecular complex of boronic acid-appended γ-cyclodextrin and zinc-dipicolylamine-based pyrene probe (Zn-1/FBγCyD) was designed based on the concept of a "cyclodextrin (CyD)-based supramolecular chemosensor". As a proof-of-concept, we have demonstrated that this complex exhibits a turn-on fluorescence response to ATP in water at physiological pH with excellent selectivity and sensitivity, owing to the efficient self-assembly of Zn-1/FBγCyD with ATP through synergistic interactions to afford a strongly fluorescent product. Remarkably, Zn-1/FBγCyD demonstrated extremely strong affinity for ATP with the conditional formation constant of (7.71 ± 0.09) × 106 M−1, resulting in the low limit of detection of 18.9 nM. Furthermore, Zn-1/FBγCyD can monitor changes in ATP concentration after the addition of apyrase, hydrolysing ATP to adenosine monophosphate and a phosphate ion. We believe that the presented approach of a CyD-based supramolecular chemosensor will propose a novel design that realises unexplored selectivity in the research field of fluorescent molecular recognition.
