2. Thermal Hall effect in a phonon-glass Ba$_3$CuSb$_2$O$_9$

Abstract

A distinct thermal Hall signal is observed in a quantum spin liquid candidate Ba$_3$CuSb$_2$O$_9$. The transverse thermal conduction shows a power-law temperature dependence below 40 K where a spin gap opens. We suggest that, through the very low longitudinal thermal conductivity and the thermal Hall signals, a phonon Hall effect is induced by strong phonon scatterings by orphan Cu$^{2+}$ spins formed in random domains of Cu$^{2+}$-Sb$^{5+}$ dumbbells.

Abstract

When quantum fluctuations destroy underlying long-range ordered states, novel quantum states emerge. Spin-liquid (SL) states of frustrated quantum antiferromagnets, in which highly-correlated spins keep to fluctuate down to very low temperatures, are prominent examples of such quantum states. SL states often exhibit exotic physical properties, but the precise nature of the elementary excitations behind such phenomena remains entirely elusive. Here we utilize thermal Hall measurements that can capture the unexplored property of the elementary excitations in SL states, and report on the observation of anomalous excitations that may unveil the unique features of the SL state. Our principal finding is a negative thermal Hall conductivity (k_xy) which the charge-neutral spin excitations in a gapless SL state of the two-dimensional kagome insulator volborthite Cu_3V_2O_7(OH)_2 \cdot 2H_2O exhibit, in much the same way in which charged electrons give rise to the conventional electric Hall effect. We find that k_xy is absent in the high-temperature paramagnetic state and develops upon entering the SL state in accordance with the growth of the short-range spin correlations, demonstrating that k_xy is a key signature of the elementary excitation formed in the SL state. These results suggest the emergence of nontrivial elementary excitations in the gapless SL state which feel the presence of fictitious magnetic flux, whose effective Lorentz force is found to be less than 1/100 of that experienced by free electrons., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, Proc. Abstract

One of the features of Japanese structural steel design is an economical design option for yielding exposed column bases before first‐story columns, namely weak‐base/strong‐column design, which is unlike the strict capacity design for column bases. This study aims to develop a repair methodology that identifies damage states of the yielding column bases and anchor rods, and selects appropriate repair/retrofit methods. As a standard repair method for damaged exposed‐type column bases, the applicability and effectiveness of the re‐tightening process of anchor rods need to be examined. This study first reviews the literature on standard retrofit techniques for column bases and required deformation capacity of ductile anchor rods. The threaded anchor rod deformation capacity with different steel grades and screw threads commonly used were tested to clarify the required ductility. To clarify the reparability of exposed column bases, numerical models of four‐ and six‐story steel moment resisting frame buildings were developed and validated by shaking table test results. The results show that this simple repair method was proven to be effective through the test program and numerical analysis and it's not always applicable for standard anchor rods assumed for pin or fixed column bases designed to remain elastic. Finlly, a repair methodology and flow chart that identifies the damage states of anchor rods and selects appropriate repair/retrofit methods for the exposed steel column base was suggested and applied to the simulation results. Abstract

Active learning is a concept that allows students to study and learn actively by themselves to get knowledge. There are several methods of active learning, including flipped classroom (FC) and team-based learning (TBL). In FC, students are required to study before classes. In TBL, students also study before class, take individual readiness assurance test (iRAT) and team readiness assurance test (tRAT), then discuss group assignment projects (GAPs) during class. The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness between FC and TBL. The effectiveness of FC and TBL was assessed from the results of the term-end examinations, questionnaires and practice examinations. To check the difficulty of the term-end examinations, control dentists took the same examinations and we calculated the equating score with item response theory. Statistical analysis showed that the correct answer rate in term-end examinations was significantly different in comparison with the time of the trial, and for the participants (students and dentists). The term-end examination score of FC and TBL did not show a statistical difference. The student questionnaire showed that TBL had higher scores than FC on various factors such as student positive attitude, preparation, ingenuity of teacher and achieving the class goals. The crown & bridge score from the practice examination of 6th-year students who had FC + TBL were constantly higher than the Japanese national average score. The identification index of FC and TBL did not show the statistical difference and there was no statistical difference on item response theory between FC and TBL.
