Alcohol-based hand rubs are generally recommended for infection control of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Hand hygiene agents, including ozonated water (OW), have been used as an alternative because alcohol-based products may cause skin damage. A few reports are available on the virucidal activity of OW against SARS-CoV-2; therefore, this study examined the inhibitory effect of 0.4, 1.0, and 4.0 ppm OW on the Omicron variant infection to VeroE6 cells expressing transmembrane protease serine 2 by calculating the median tissue culture infectious dose (TCID50) using the E1052–20 test method of the American Society of Testing Materials International. Additionally, viral RNA copies were measured in culture supernatants of control or OW. Each OW concentration demonstrated ≥5.6 log10 TCID50 reduction, corresponding to ≥99.999% reduction of infectious virus, while the control phosphate-buffered saline showed no inactivation effect. More than 5 log10 copies/mL reduction of viral RNA was observed in the culture supernatant of each OW compared with the control. These findings suggest that exposure of SARS-CoV-2 to at least 0.4 ppm OW for 5 s is sufficient for viral inactivation and that OW can be used as an alternative hand hygiene agent to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection. This study reports the results of a cross-sectional analysis of variables associated with parents' reading to young children among participants in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) in Texas. The participants were 600 WIC mothers visiting WIC clinics in Texas. The data were collected by survey, and the requested information concerned reading to young children, environmental support for reading (access to books), perceived barriers to reading to children (such as cost of books and being too busy), outcome expectations concerning reading, self-efficacy concerning reading, and demographic variables. Mplus was used to analyze a structural equation model predicting reading to young children. The model results indicated that outcome expectations concerning the benefits of reading to children and access to books were positively related to reading to children, and that perceived barriers were negatively related. Self-efficacy to select books and mother's education did not account for parents' reading to children when included in the model. The implications of the findings for interventions to increase reading to children are discussed. (Contains 4 tables, 4 figures and 3 notes.)

Researchers have suggested that good-quality school climates foster a sense of connection to the school and in this way contribute to fewer emotional and behavioral problems. However, few studies have directly assessed the role of school connectedness as a mediator of school climate effects. Using path analysis, this brief report examined whether four aspects of student perceived school climate (cohesion, friction, competition among students, and overall satisfaction with classes) were indirectly associated with subsequent early adolescent conduct problems and depressive symptoms through school connectedness. Participants were four hundred and eighty-nine 10- to 14-year old middle school students involved in two waves of a study. The results showed that school connectedness mediated the relations between perceived cohesion, perceived friction, and overall satisfaction with classes and subsequent student conduct problems 1 year later. School connectedness was not, however, predictive of subsequent depressive symptoms and thus did not mediate the school climate effects on early adolescent emotional problems.

This study investigated adulthood predictors of health-promoting behavior in later aging. The participants were 162 members of the Terman Study of the Gifted (Terman et al., 1925), who responded in 1999 at an average age of 86 to a mailout questionnaire which included questions concerning their positive health behavior. Adulthood variables were obtained for analysis from the study archives. Cross-sectional analyses showed that health-promoting behavior was related to perceived health and well-being in later aging. In longitudinal analyses, "easygoingness" in adulthood was positively related to positive psychosocial behavior and positive health practices, and neuroticism was negatively related to positive psychosocial behavior in later aging. Perceived health in adulthood was related to positive psychosocial behavior, exercise, physical recreation, and other positive health practices. Education, perceived health in adulthood, recalled importance in adulthood of success in sports before the age of 12, and interest in outdoor sports in early adulthood, as well as current health problems, were related to exercise and physical recreation in later aging. Gender played a moderating role in the prediction of positive psychosocial behavior, with the relationship of self-rated health in adulthood and recalled importance of success in sports before the age of 12 with positive psychosocial behavior being stronger for men than for women.
