1. Shape transition and coexistence in Te isotopes studied with the quadrupole collective Hamiltonian based on a relativistic energy density functional

Abstract

Evolution and coexistence of shape and the related collective states of even-even Te isotopes are investigated within the quadrupole collective model that is based on the nuclear density functional theory. By means of the constrained self-consistent mean-field calculations performed within the relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov method with a choice of an energy density functional and a pairing force, parameters of the triaxial quadrupole collective Hamiltonian are completely determines. The collective model produces for the near mid-shell nuclei, e.g., $^{116}$Te and $^{118}$Te, low-energy and low-spin excited states, including the $0^+_2$ state, that can be interpreted as the intruder states associated with the strongly deformed prolate minimum in the potential energy surface, along with the $0^+_1$ ground state that is attributed to the normal state based on a weakly oblate deformed global minimum. The collective model calculation suggests the lowering of the $0^+_2$ energy level toward neutron mid-shell, as observed experimentally. The sensitivity of the mean-field and spectroscopic results to the choice of the pairing strength is also analyzed, and it is shown that by increasing the pairing strength description of the low-lying states of the near mid-shell nuclei is improved., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, 1 table

Abstract

We present an effective method for transmitting electromagnetic waves as surface waves with a tape-based metasurface design. This design incorporates silver square patches periodically patterned on an adhesive tape substrate. Specifically, our study proposes a strategy to enhance the efficiency of power transfer in high-frequency bands by guiding signals as surface waves rather than free-space waves. Both the numerical and experimental results validate the markedly enhanced efficiency in power transfer of high-frequency signals compared to that achieved with conventional methods, such as wireless power transfer and microstrips. Importantly, our metasurface design can be readily manufactured and tailored for various environments. Thus, our study contributes to designing power-efficient next-generation communication systems such as 6G and 7G, which leverage high-frequency signals in the millimeter-wave and THz bands.

Abstract

In 2018, the E12-17-003 experiment was conducted at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) to explore the possible existence of an nnLambda state in the reconstructed missing mass distribution from a tritium gas target [K. N. Suzuki et al., Prog. Theor. Exp. Phys. 2022, 013D01 (2022), B. Pandey et al., Phys. Rev. C 105, L051001 (2022)]. As part of this investigation, data was also collected using a gaseous hydrogen target, not only for a precise absolute mass scale calibration but also for the study of Lambda/Sigma^0 electroproduction. This dataset was acquired at Q^2~0.5 (GeV/c)^2, W=2.14 GeV, and theta_{gamma K}^{c.m.}~8 deg. It covers forward angles where photoproduction data is scarce and a low-Q^2 region that is of interest for hypernuclear experiments. On the other hand, this kinematic region is at a slightly higher Q^2 than previous hypernuclear experiments, thus providing crucial information for understanding the Q^2 dependence of the differential cross sections for Lambda/Sigma^0 hyperon electroproduction. This paper reports on the Q^2 dependence of the differential cross section for the e + p -> e' + K^+ + Lambda/Sigma^0 reaction in the 0.2-0.8 (GeV/c)^2, and provides comparisons with the currently available theoretical models., Comment: 11 pages, 15 figures

Abstract

We investigate relations between the chiral susceptibility and axial $U(1)$ anomaly in lattice QCD at high temperatures. Employing the exactly chiral symmetric Dirac operator, we separate the purely axial $U(1)$ breaking effect in the connected and disconnected chiral susceptibilites in a theoretically clean manner. Abstract

Magnetic multilayers with interlayer exchange coupling have been widely studied for both static and dynamic regimes. Their dynamical responses depend on the exchange coupling strength and magnetic properties of individual layers. Magnetic resonance spectra in such systems are conveniently discussed in terms of coupling of acoustic and optical modes. At a certain value of applied magnetic field, the two modes come close to being degenerate and the spectral gap indicates the strength of mode hybridisation. In this work, we theoretically and experimentally study the mode hybridisation of interlayer-exchange-coupled moments with dissimilar magnetisation and thickness of two ferromagnetic layers. In agreement with symmetry analysis for eigenmodes, our low-symmetry multilayers exhibit sizable spectral gaps for all experimental conditions. The spectra agree well with the predictions from the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation at the macrospin limit whose parameters are independently fixed by static measurements., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures

Abstract

We present the development of neutron-tagging techniques in Super-Kamiokande IV using a neural network analysis. The detection efficiency of neutron capture on hydrogen is estimated to be 26%, with a mis-tag rate of 0.016 per neutrino event. The uncertainty of the tagging efficiency is estimated to be 9.0%. Measurement of the tagging efficiency with data from an Americium-Beryllium calibration agrees with this value within 10%. The tagging procedure was performed on 3,244.4 days of SK-IV atmospheric neutrino data, identifying 18,091 neutrons in 26,473 neutrino events. The fitted neutron capture lifetime was measured as 218 \pm 9 \mu s.

Abstract

We measured a set of $\pi^\pm\Sigma^\mp$, $\pi^0\Sigma^0$, and $\pi^-\Sigma^0$ invariant mass spectra below and above the $\bar{K}N$ mass threshold in $K^-$-induced reactions on deuteron. We deduced the $S$-wave $\bar{K}N\rightarrow\pi\Sigma$ and $\bar{K}N\rightarrow\bar{K}N$ scattering amplitudes in the isospin 0 channel in the framework of a $\bar{K}N$ and $\pi\Sigma$ coupled channel. We find that a resonance pole corresponding to $\Lambda(1405)$ is located at 1417.7$^{+6.0}_{-7.4}$(fitting errors)$^{+1.1}_{-1.0}$(systematic errors) + $[-26.1^{+6.0}_{-7.9}$(fitting errors)$^{+1.7}_{-2.0}$(systematic errors)]$i$ MeV/$c^2$, closer to the $\bar{K}N$ mass threshold than the value determined by the Particle Data Group., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Finite element method (FEM) modeling of the volumetric expansion phenomenon associated with the accumulation of irradiation was performed on rocks in a concrete for nuclear power plant. The FEM mesh of sandstone, tuff, and granite was created based on microscopic images, and the volumetric expansion due to irradiation was calculated. The saturated value of the volume expansion due to irradiation accumulation was calculated, and it was shown that the saturated value of the volume expansion was well explained by the experimental value. In addition, the FEM analysis indicates that irradiation-induced degradation of rock propagates through a localized concentration of stress followed by fracture with cracks spreading throughout the rock., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

10. Enhanced superconductivity and moderate spin fluctuations suppressed at low energies in heavily electron-doped La1111-based superconductor

Abstract

To elucidate the origin of re-enhanced high-$T_c$ phase in the heavily electron-doped Fe-pnictides, systematic $^{75}$As NMR studies are performed on heavily electron-doped LaFe$Pn$O$_{0.75}$H$_{0.25}$ by controlling the pnictogen height ($h_{Pn}$) from the Fe plane through the substitution at $Pn$(=As) site with Sb or P. The measurements of nuclear spin relaxation rate (1/$T_1$) and Knight shift ($K$) reveal that the moderate spin fluctuations at high temperatures are suppressed toward low temperatures. Such characteristic spin fluctuations with gap like feature at low energies are more enlarged in higher $T_c$ compounds with higher $h_{Pn}$, while those are totally suppressed in non-superconducting compounds with lower $h_{Pn}$. This implies that the contribution of the finite energy part in the spin fluctuation spectrum is crucial for enhancing $T_c$ in the heavily electron-doped regime. This is in contrast to many cases of typical Fe-based compounds with hole and electron Fermi surfaces of similar sizes, where the spin fluctuations at low energies develop significantly at low temperatures. The features in the heavily electron-doped states are discussed in relation with the characteristics of the faint hole Fermi surface derived from $d_{xy}$ orbital that rises when $h_{Pn}$ is high, together with the enhanced electron correlation effects., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, Accepted for publication in Phys. Abstract

We performed a novel $\Sigma^+ p$ scattering experiment at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Approximately 2400 $\Sigma^+ p$ elastic scattering events were identified from $4.9 \times 10^7$ tagged $\Sigma^+$ particles in the $\Sigma^+$ momentum range 0.44 -- 0.80 GeV/$c$. The differential cross sections of the $\Sigma^+ p$ elastic scattering were derived with much better precision than in previous experiments. The obtained differential cross sections were approximately 2 mb/sr or less, which were not as large as those predicted by the fss2 and FSS models based on the quark cluster model in the short-range region. By performing phase-shift analyses for the obtained differential cross sections, we experimentally derived the phase shifts of the $^3 S_1$ and $^1 P_1$ channels for the first time. The phase shift of the $^3 S_1$ channel, where a large repulsive core was predicted owing to the Pauli effect between quarks, was evaluated as $20^\circ<|\delta_{^3S_1}|<35^\circ$. If the sign of $\delta_{^3S_1}$ is assumed to be negative, the interaction in this channel is moderately repulsive, as the Nijmegen extended-sort-core models predicted.

Abstract

Coherent photoproduction of the neutral pion and eta meson on the deuteron, $\gamma{d}${$\to$}$\pi^0\eta{d}$, has been experimentally studied at incident photon energies ranging from the reaction threshold to 1.15 GeV. The total cross section demonstrates a rapid rise below 1 GeV. The data are underestimated by the existing theoretical calculations based on quasi-free $\pi^0 \eta$ photoproduction on the nucleon followed by deuteron coalescence. At the same time, the data are rather well reproduced by the calculations taking into account the final-state interaction. We have also measured for the first time the differential cross sections: the $\pi^0 \eta$ invariant-mass distribution $d\sigma/dM_{\pi \eta}$, the $\pi^0 d$ invariant-mass distribution $d\sigma/dM_{\pi d}$, the $\eta d$ invariant-mass distribution $d\sigma/dM_{\eta d}$, and the distribution over the deuteron emission angle $d\sigma/d\Omega_d$ in the overall center-of-mass frame. The measured cross section $d\sigma/d\Omega_d$ does not exhibit strongly backward-peaking behavior predicted by the calculations. At all incident energies, an increase in $d\sigma/dM_{\eta d}$ near the $\eta d$ threshold is observed, which indicates a bound or virtual $\eta d$ state resulting from a strong attraction between $\eta$ and a deuteron. The possibilities of using coherent $\pi^0\eta$ photoproduction on a nucleus to study the $\eta$-nuclear interaction are also discussed., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

Based on Brown's static equations of micromagnetics, we compute the uniaxial polarization of the scattered neutron beam of a bulk magnetic material. The theoretical expressions are compared to experimental data on a soft magnetic nanocrystalline alloy. The micromagnetic SANS theory provides a general framework for polarized real-space neutron methods, and it opens up a new avenue for magnetic neutron data analysis on magnetic microstructures.

Abstract

The differential cross sections of the {\Sigma}-p --> {\Lambda} n reaction were measured accurately for the {\Sigma}- momentum (p_{{\Sigma}}) ranging from 470 to 650 MeV/c at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Precise angular information about the {\Sigma}-p --> {\Lambda} n reaction was obtained for the first time by detecting approximately 100 reaction events at each angular step of {\Delta}cos{\theta} = 0.1. The obtained differential cross sections show slightly forward-peaking structure in the measured momentum regions.The cross sections integrated for -0.7 < cos{\theta} < 1.0 were obtained as 22.5 +- 0.68 (stat.) +- 0.65 (syst.) mb and 15.8 +-0.83(stat.) +- 0.52 (syst.) mb for 470

Abstract

In the early days of QCD, the axial $U(1)$ anomaly was considered as a trigger for the breaking of the $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R$ symmetry through topological excitations of gluon fields. However, it has been a challenge for lattice QCD to quantify the effect. In this work, we simulate QCD at high temperatures with chiral fermions. The exact chiral symmetry enables us to separate the contribution from the axial $U(1)$ breaking from others among the susceptibilities in the scalar and pseudoscalar channels. Our result in two-flavor QCD indicates that the chiral susceptibility, which is conventionally used as a probe for $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R$ breaking, is actually dominated by the axial $U(1)$ breaking at temperatures $T\ge 165$ MeV., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, contribution to LATTICE 2021, published version

Abstract

We present a reconstruction in early data of the semileptonic decay $B^+ \to \pi^0 \ell^+ \nu_\ell$, and first results of a reconstruction of the decays $B^+ \to \rho^0 \ell^+ \nu_\ell$ and $B^0 \to \rho^- \ell^+ \nu_\ell$ in a sample corresponding to 62.8 fb$^{-1}$ of Belle II data using hadronic $B$-tagging via the full-event-interpretation algorithm. We determine the total branching fractions via fits to the distribution of the square of the missing mass, and find $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to \pi^0 \ell^+ \nu_\ell)$ = (8.29 $\pm$ 1.99(stat) $\pm$ 0.46(syst)) $\times 10^{-5}$. We obtain $95\%$ CL upper limits on the branching fractions with $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to \rho^- \ell^+ \nu_\ell) < 3.37 \times 10^{-4}$ and $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to \rho^0 \ell^+ \nu_\ell) < 19.7 \times 10^{-5}$. We also obtain an updated branching fraction for the $B^0 \to \pi^- \ell^+ \nu_\ell$ decay, $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to \pi^- \ell^+ \nu_\ell)$ = (1.47 $\pm$ 0.29(stat) $\pm$ 0.05(syst)) $\times 10^{-4}$, based on the sum of the partial branching fractions in three bins of the squared momentum transfer to the leptonic system.

Abstract

The small binding energy of the hypertrition leads to predictions of non-existence of bound hypernuclei for isotriplet three-body systems such as $nn\Lambda$. However, invariant mass spectroscopy at GSI has reported events that may be interpreted as the bound $nn\Lambda$ state. The $nn\Lambda$ state was sought by missing-mass spectroscopy via the $(e,e'K^+)$ reaction at Jefferson Lab's experimental Hall A. The present experiment has higher sensitivity to the $nn\Lambda$-state investigation in terms of better precision by a factor of about three. The analysis shown in this article focuses on the derivation of the reaction cross-section for the $^3{\rm{H}}(\gamma^{*},K^+)\textrm{X}$ reaction. Events that were detected in an acceptance, where a Monte Carlo simulation could reproduce the data well ($|\delta p/p| < 4\%$), were analyzed to minimize the systematic uncertainty. No significant structures were observed with the acceptance cuts, and the upper limits of the production cross-section of the $nn\Lambda$ state were obtained to be $21$ and $31~\rm{nb/sr}$ at the $90\%$ confidence level when theoretical predictions of $(-B_{\Lambda}, \Gamma) = (0.25,0.8)$ and $(0.55, 4.7)$ MeV, respectively, were assumed. Abstract

This paper reports a study of $B \to K^{*}\gamma$ decays using $62.8\pm 0.6$ fb$^{-1}$ of data collected during 2019--2020 by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB $e^{+}e^{-}$ asymmetric-energy collider, corresponding to $(68.2 \pm 0.8) \times 10^6$ $B\overline{B}$ events. We find $454 \pm 28$, $50 \pm 10$, $169 \pm 18$, and $160 \pm 17$ signal events in the decay modes $B^{0} \to K^{*0}[K^{+}\pi^{-}]\gamma$, $B^{0} \to K^{*0}[K^0_{\rm S}\pi^{0}]\gamma$, $B^{+} \to K^{*+}[K^{+}\pi^{0}]\gamma$, and $B^{+} \to K^{*+}[K^{+}\pi^{0}]\gamma$, respectively. The uncertainties quoted for the signal yield are statistical only. We report the branching fractions of these decays: $$\mathcal{B} [B^{0} \to K^{*0}[K^{+}\pi^{-}]\gamma] = (4.5 \pm 0.3 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{-5}, $$ $$\mathcal{B} [B^{0} \to K^{*0}[K^0_{\rm S}\pi^{0}]\gamma] = (4.4 \pm 0.9 \pm 0.6) \times 10^{-5},$$ $$\mathcal{B} [B^{+} \to K^{*+}[K^{+}\pi^{0}]\gamma] = (5.0 \pm 0.5 \pm 0.4)\times 10^{-5},\text{ and}$$ $$\mathcal{B} [B^{+} \to K^{*+}[K^0_{\rm S}\pi^{+}]\gamma] = (5.4 \pm 0.6 \pm 0.4) \times 10^{-5},$$ where the first uncertainty is statistical, and the second is systematic. The results are consistent with world-average values.

Abstract

We report on the first Belle II measurement of the branching fraction ($\mathcal{B}$) and longitudinal polarization fraction ($f_L$) of $B^+\to \rho^+\rho^0$ decays. We reconstruct $B^+\to \rho^+(\to \pi^+\pi^0(\to \gamma\gamma))\rho^0(\to \pi^+\pi^-)$ decays in a sample of SuperKEKB electron-positron collisions collected by the Belle II experiment in 2019 and 2020 at the $\Upsilon$(4S) resonance and corresponding to $62.8$ fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We fit the distributions of the difference between expected and observed $B$ candidate energy, continuum-suppression variable, dipion masses, and angular distributions of the resulting samples, to determine a signal yield of $104\pm16$ events. The signal yields are corrected for efficiencies determined from simulation and control data samples to obtain $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to \rho^+\rho^0) = [20.6 \pm 3.2(\rm stat) \pm 4.0(\rm syst)]\times 10^{-6}$, and $f_L(B^+ \to \rho^+\rho^0) = 0.936 ^{+0.049}_{-0.041}(\rm stat)\pm 0.021(\rm syst)$. This first Belle II $B^+ \to \rho^+\rho^0$ angular analysis yields results compatible with previous determinations, and indicates Belle II performance superior to early Belle results.

Abstract

We report on measurements of branching fractions ($\mathcal{B}$) and CP-violating charge asymmetries ($\mathcal{A}_{\rm CP}$) of multibody charmless $B$ decays reconstructed by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider. We use a sample of collisions collected in 2019 and 2020 at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance and corresponding to $62.8$ fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We use simulation to determine optimized event selections. The $\Delta E$ and $M_{\rm bc}$ distributions of the resulting samples are fit to determine signal yields of approximately 690, 840, and 380 decays for the channels $B^+ \to K^+K^-K^+$, $B^+ \to K^+\pi^-\pi^+$, and $B^0 \to K^+\pi^-\pi^0$, respectively. These yields are corrected for efficiencies determined from simulation and control data samples to obtain $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to K^+K^-K^+) = [35.8 \pm 1.6(\rm stat) \pm 1.4 (\rm syst)]\times 10^{-6}$, $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to K^+\pi^-\pi^+) = [67.0 \pm 3.3 (\rm stat)\pm 2.3 (\rm syst)]\times 10^{-6}$, $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to K^+\pi^-\pi^0) = [38.1 \pm 3.5 (\rm stat)\pm 3.9 (\rm syst)]\times 10^{-6}$, $\mathcal{A}_{\rm CP}(B^+ \to K^+K^-K^+) = -0.103 \pm 0.042(\rm stat) \pm 0.020 (\rm syst)$, $\mathcal{A}_{\rm CP}(B^+ \to K^+\pi^-\pi^+) = -0.010 \pm 0.050 (\rm stat)\pm 0.021(\rm syst)$, and $\mathcal{A}_{\rm CP}(B^0 \to K^+\pi^-\pi^0) = 0.207 \pm 0.088 (\rm stat)\pm 0.011(\rm syst)$. Results are consistent with previous measurements and demonstrate detector performance comparable with the best Belle results.

Abstract

We report results from a study of hadronic transitions of the $\chi_{bJ}(nP)$ states of bottomonium at Belle. The $P$-wave states are reconstructed in transitions to the $\Upsilon(1S)$ with the emission of an $\omega$ meson. The transitions of the $n=2$ triplet states provide a unique laboratory in which to study nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics, as the kinematic threshold for production of an $\omega$ and $\Upsilon(1S)$ lies between the $J=0$ and $J=1$ states. A search for the $\chi_{bJ}(3P)$ states is also reported.

Abstract

We perform coincidence measurements between $\alpha$ particles and $\gamma$ rays from a $^{233}$U source to determine the half-lives of the excited state in a $^{229}$Th nucleus. We first prove that the half-lives of 42.43- and 164.53-keV states are consistent with literature values, whereas that of the 97.14-keV state (93(7) ps) deviates from a previously measured value (147(12) ps). The half-lives of 71.83- and 163.25-keV states are determined for the first time. Based on the obtained half-lives and the Alaga rule, we estimate the radiative half-life of the low-energy isomeric state ($^{229m}$Th) to be $5.0(11)\times10^{3}$ s, which is one of the key parameters for the frequency standard based on $^{229}$Th., Comment: 33 pages, 9 figures. 3 tables

Abstract

We report the first reconstruction of the $B^{0} \to \pi^{0} \pi^{0}$ decay mode at Belle II using samples of 2019 and 2020 data that correspond to 62.8 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We find $14.0^{+6.8}_{-5.6}$ signal decays, corresponding to a significance of 3.4 standard deviations and determine a branching ratio of $\mathcal{B}(B^{0} \rightarrow \pi^{0} \pi^{0}) = [0.98^{+0.48}_{-0.39} \pm 0.27] \times 10^{-6}$. The results agree with previous determinations and contribute important information to an early assessment of detector performance and Belle II's potential for future determinations of $\alpha/\phi_2$ using $B \rightarrow \pi \pi$ modes., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures. Abstract

We present preliminary results on the reconstruction of the $B^0\to J\mskip 1mu / \psi\mskip 2mu K^0_{\scriptscriptstyle L}$ decay, where $J\mskip 1mu / \psi\mskip 2mu\to\mu^+\mu^-$ or $e^+e^-$. Using a dataset corresponding to a luminosity of $62.8\pm0.6\mbox{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric energy $e^+e^-$ collider, we measure a total of $267\pm21$ candidates with $J\mskip 1mu / \psi\mskip 2mu\to\mu^+\mu^-$ and $226\pm20$ with with $J\mskip 1mu / \psi\mskip 2mu\to e^+e^-$. Abstract

We report updated measurements of branching fractions ($\mathcal{B}$) and CP-violating charge asymmetries ($\mathcal{A_{\rm CP}}$) for charmless $B$ decays at Belle II, which operates on or near the $\Upsilon$(4S) resonance at the SuperKEKB asymmetric energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. We use samples of 2019 and 2020 data corresponding to 62.8 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. The samples are analysed using two-dimensional fits in $\Delta E$ and $M_{\it bc}$ to determine signal yields of approximately 568, 103, and 115 decays for the channels $B^0 \to K^+\pi^-$, $B^+ \to K_{\rm S}^0\pi^+$, and $B^0 \to \pi^+\pi^-$, respectively. Signal yields are corrected for efficiencies determined from simulation and control data samples to obtain branching fractions and CP-violating asymmetries for flavour-specific channels. The results are compatible with known determinations and contribute important information to an early assessment of Belle II detector performance., Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures. Abstract

We present the first measurement of the time-integrated mixing probability $\chi_d$ using Belle II data collected at a center-of-mass (CM) energy of 10.58 GeV, corresponding to the mass of the $\Upsilon$(4S) resonance, with an integrated luminosity of $34.6 {\rm fb}^{-1}$ at the SuperKEKB $e^+ e^-$ collider. We reconstruct pairs of B mesons both of which decay to semileptonic final states. Abstract

To investigate the interaction between the nucleon $N$ and nucleon resonance $N(1535)1/2^-$, the $\eta d$ threshold structure connected to the isoscalar $S$-wave $N$-$N(1535)1/2^-$ system has been experimentally studied in the $\gamma{d}${$\to$}$\pi^0\eta{d}$ reaction at incident photon energies ranging from the reaction threshold to 1.15 GeV. A strong enhancement is observed near the $\eta d$ threshold over the three-body phase-space contribution in the $\eta d$ invariant-mass distribution. An analysis incorporating the known isovector resonance $\mathcal{D}_{12}$ with a spin-parity of $2^+$ in the $\pi^0d$ channel reveals the existence of a narrow isoscalar resonance-like structure with $1^-$ in the $\eta d$ system. Using a Flatt\'e parametrization, the mass is found to be $2.427_{-0.006}^{+0.013}$ GeV, close to the $\eta d$ threshold, and the width is $\left(0.029_{-0.029}^{+0.006}{\rm\ GeV}\right)+\left(0.00_{-0.00}^{+0.41}\right) p_\eta c$, where $p_\eta$ denotes the $\eta$ momentum in the rest frame of the $\eta d$ system. The observed structure would be attributed to a predicted isoscalar $1^-$ $\eta NN$ bound state from $\eta NN$ and $\pi NN$ coupled-channel calculation, or an $\eta d$ virtual state owing to strong $\eta d$ attraction., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

We report measurements of branching fractions ($\mathcal B$) and direct ${\it CP}$-violating asymmetries ($\mathcal A_{\it CP}$) for the decays $B^+\to K^+\pi^0$ and $B^+ \to \pi^+\pi^0$ reconstructed with the Belle II detector in a sample of asymmetric-energy electron-positron collisions at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance corresponding to 62.8 $\text{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. The results are $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to K^+\pi^0) = [11.9 ^{+1.1}_{-1.0} (\rm stat)\pm 1.6(\rm syst)]\times 10^{-6}$, $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to \pi^+\pi^0) = [5.5 ^{+1.0}_{-0.9} (\rm stat)\pm 0.7(\rm syst)]\times 10^{-6}$, $\mathcal A_{\it CP}(B^+ \to K^+\pi^0) = -0.09 \pm 0.09 (\rm stat)\pm 0.03(\rm syst)$, and $\mathcal A_{\it CP}(B^+ \to \pi^+\pi^0) = -0.04 \pm 0.17 (\rm stat)\pm 0.06(\rm syst)$. Abstract

We report on the first measurement of the direct $CP$-violating asymmetry ($\mathcal{A}$) in the charmless decay $B^0 \to K^0\pi^0$ at Belle II and an updated measurement of its branching fraction ($\mathcal{B}$). We use a sample of electron-positron collisions collected in 2019 and 2020 at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance and corresponding to $62.8$ $\text{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We reconstruct and select about $50$ $B^0 \to K_S^0 \pi^0$ candidates, and we measure $\mathcal{A}_{{K^0\pi^0}} = -0.40_{-0.44}^{+0.46} (\text{stat}) \pm 0.04 (\text{syst})$ and $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to K^0 \pi^0) = [8.5_{-1.6}^{+1.7} (\text{stat}) \pm 1.2 (\text{syst})] \times 10^{-6}$. This is the first measurement of $CP$ violation in $B^0 \to K^0\pi^0$ decays reported by Belle II. Abstract

A high statistics $\Sigma p$ scattering experiment has been performed at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Data for momentum-tagged $\Sigma^{-}$ running in a liquid hydrogen target were accumulated by detecting the $\pi^{-}p \to K^{+}\Sigma^{-}$ reaction with a high intensity $\pi^{-}$ beam of 20 M/spill. Differential cross sections of the $\Sigma^{-}p$ elastic scattering were derived with a drastically improved accuracy by identifying the largest statistics of about 4,500 events from 1.72 $\times$ $10^{7}$ $\Sigma^{-}$. The derived differential cross section shows a clear forward-peaking angular distribution for a $\Sigma^{-}$ momentum range from 470 to 850 MeV/$c$. The accurate data will impose a strong constraint on the theoretical models of the baryon-baryon interactions.

Abstract

This note describes the rediscovery of $B\to\eta' K$ decays in Belle II data, both in the charged and neutral final state: $B_0\to\eta' K_S$ and $B^\pm\to\eta' K^\pm$. The $\eta'$ is searched for in two decay modes: $\eta'\to\eta\pi^+\pi^-$ with $\eta\to\gamma\gamma$, and $\eta'\to\rho\gamma$. The analysis uses data collected in 2019 and 2020 at the SuperKEKB asymmetric $e^+e^-$ collider, with an integrated luminosity of $62.8~fb^{-1}$, corresponding to $68.2$ million of $B\bar{B}$ pairs produced. The signal yield is obtained via an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to signal sensitive variables, obtaining branching ratios: $$\mathcal{B}\left(B^\pm\to\eta'K^\pm\right) = \left(63.4~^{+3.4}_{-3.3}\,(stat)\,\pm3.2\,(syst)\,\right) \times10^{-6} $$ $$\mathcal{B}\left(B_0\to\eta'K_S\right) = \left(59.9~^{+5.8}_{-5.5}\,(stat)\,\pm2.9\,(syst)\,\right) \times10^{-6} $$ which are consistent with world average., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

We report measurements related to hadronic $B$ decays to final states that contain charm mesons. The analyses are performed on a $62.8~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ data set collected by the Belle II experiment at a center-of-mass energy corresponding to the mass of the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance. The measurements reported are for the decay modes $B^-\to D^0 h^-$, $B^{-}\to D^{*0}h^-$, $\bar{B}^{0}\to D^{+} h^{-}$ and $\bar{B}^{0}\to D^{*+} h^{-}$, where $h=\pi$ or $K$. These modes are either signal or control channels for measurements related to the unitarity triangle angle $\gamma$ in direct or time-dependent $CP$-violation measurements. The reported observables are the ratios between the $B\to D^{(*)}K$ and $B\to D^{(*)}\pi$ decay rates, which are found to be in agreement with previous measurements., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures, Moriond QCD

Abstract

The chiral susceptibility, or the first derivative of the chiral condensate with respect to the quark mass, is often used as a probe for the QCD phase transition since the chiral condensate is an order parameter of $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$ symmetry breaking. However, the chiral condensate also breaks the axial $U(1)$ symmetry, which is usually not paid attention to as it is already broken by anomaly and apparently gives little impact on the transition. We investigate the susceptibilities in the scalar and pseudoscalar channels in order to quantify how much the axial $U(1)$ breaking contributes to the chiral phase transition. Employing a chirally symmetric lattice Dirac operator, and its eigenmode decomposition, we separate the axial $U(1)$ breaking effects from others. Our result in two-flavor QCD indicates that both of the connected and disconnected chiral susceptibilities are dominated by the axial $U(1)$ breaking at temperatures $T\gtrsim 190$ MeV after the quadratically divergent constant is subtracted., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, to appear in PTEP

The binary of the pulsar PSRB1259$-$63 and the Be star LS 2883 has been observed at the 2010 and 2014 periastron passages in the near-infrared (NIR) bands using the IRSF/SIRIUS and SIRPOL. The light curves in the J-,H-, and Ks-bands are almost identical in these periastron passages. A flare starts no later than 10 days before periastron and the maximum brightening of about 0.1 magnitude is observed 12--17 days after periastron. The rising part of the light curve is steeper and reaches a peak slightly earlier in the Ks-band than in the other bands, thus a characteristic track appears on the NIR color-magnitude diagram. The time lag between the NIR light curves indicates that the variation in the Be circumstellar disk first occurs in an outer region. We propose that the initial rapid contraction followed by the gradual expansion of the disk is evoked by the rapidly changing tidal torque around periastron and the resultant change of the optically thick area causes the observed NIR light curves., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures. Abstract

We performed muon spin rotation/relaxation measurements to investigate the magnetic behavior of $T^{\prime}$-type Eu$_2$CuO$_4$ (ECO), which is the parent compound of electron-doped cuprate superconductors, and the effects of oxygen-reduction annealing on its magnetism. In as-sintered (AS) ECO, we clarified the development of magnetic correlations upon cooling below $T_\mathrm{N1}$ (= 265 K) as well as the coexistence of a dominant fluctuating spin state and partially ordered spin state in the temperature range between $\sim$150 K and $T_\mathrm{N1}$. Upon further cooling, uniform long-range magnetic order was observed below $T_\mathrm{N2} = 110$ K, which is close to the ordering temperature of 115 K in $T^{\prime}$-type La$_2$CuO$_4$ (LCO) [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 82}, 180508(R) (2010)]. For oxygen-reduction-annealed ECO, a similar ordering sequence with the same $T_\mathrm{N2}$ was observed but without the partially ordered spin state. Therefore, the fluctuating spin state over a wide temperature range and a $T_\mathrm{N2}$ less than the N{\'e}el temperature ($T_\mathrm{N2} \approx T_\mathrm{N1}$) in $T$-type LCO are common features of the $T^{\prime}$-type parent $R_2$CuO$_4$ ($R$CO, $R$: rare-earth ion). The origin of the partially ordered spin state in AS ECO is discussed from the viewpoint of chemical defect. Abstract

We investigate the axial U(1) anomaly of two-flavor QCD at temperatures 190--330 MeV. In order to preserve precise chiral symmetry on the lattice, we employ the Mobius domain-wall fermion action as well as overlap fermion action implemented with a stochastic reweighting technique. Compared to our previous studies, we reduce the lattice spacing to 0.07 fm, simulate larger multiple volumes to estimate finite size effect, and take more than four quark mass points, including one below physical point to investigate the chiral limit. We measure the topological susceptibility, axial U(1) susceptibility, and examine the degeneracy of U(1) partners in meson and baryon correlators. All the data above the critical temperature indicate that the axial U(1) violation is consistent with zero within statistical errors. The quark mass dependence suggests disappearance of the U(1) anomaly at a rate comparable to that of the SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R symmetry breaking., Comment: 40 pages, 19 figures, the version published in PRD

Abstract

In an emulsion-counter hybrid experiment performed at J-PARC, a $\Xi^-$ absorption event was observed which decayed into twin single-$\Lambda$ hypernuclei. Kinematic calculations enabled a unique identification of the reaction process as $\Xi^{-} + ^{14}$N$\ \rightarrow\ ^{10}_\Lambda$Be + $^5_\Lambda$He. For the binding energy of the $\Xi^{-}$ hyperon in the $\Xi^-$-$^{14}$N system a value of $1.27 \pm 0.21$ MeV was deduced. The energy level of $\Xi^-$ is likely a nuclear $1p$ state which indicates a weak ${\Xi}N$-$\Lambda\Lambda$ coupling.

Abstract

In a neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) experiment, energy resolution is important to distinguish between $0\nu\beta\beta$ and background events. CAlcium fluoride for studies of Neutrino and Dark matters by Low Energy Spectrometer (CANDLES) discerns the $0\nu\beta\beta$ of $^{48}$Ca using a CaF$_2$ scintillator as the detector and source. Photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) collect scintillation photons. At the Q-value of $^{48}$Ca, the current energy resolution (2.6%) exceeds the ideal statistical fluctuation of the number of photoelectrons (1.6%). Because of CaF$_2$'s long decay constant of 1000 ns, a signal integration within 4000 ns is used to calculate the energy. The baseline fluctuation ($\sigma_{baseline}$) is accumulated in the signal integration, thus degrading the energy resolution. This paper studies $\sigma_{baseline}$ in the CANDLES detector, which severely degrades the resolution by 1% at the Q-value of $^{48}$Ca. To avoid $\sigma_{\rm baseline}$, photon counting can be used to obtain the number of photoelectrons in each PMT; however, a significant photoelectron signal overlapping probability in each PMT causes missing photoelectrons in counting and reduces the energy resolution. "Partial photon counting" reduces $\sigma_{baseline}$ and minimizes photoelectron loss. We obtain improved energy resolutions of 4.5-4.0% at 1460.8 keV ($\gamma$-ray of $^{40}$K), and 3.3-2.9% at 2614.5 keV ($\gamma$-ray of $^{208}$Tl). The energy resolution at the Q-value is estimated to be improved from 2.6% to 2.2%, and the detector sensitivity for the $0\nu\beta\beta$ half-life of $^{48}$Ca can be improved by 1.09 times., Comment: This manuscript is prepared for submission to IEEE Transaction on Nuclear Science. Abstract

We report on first measurements of branching fractions~($\mathcal{B}$) and CP-violating charge asymmetries~($\mathcal{A}$) in charmless $B$ decays at Belle~II. We use a sample of electron-positron collisions collected in 2019 and 2020 at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance and corresponding to $34.6$\,fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We use simulation to determine optimized event selections. The $\Delta E$ distributions of the resulting samples, restricted in $M_{\rm bc}$, are fit to determine signal yields. Signal yields are corrected for efficiencies determined from simulation and control data samples to obtain branching fractions and CP-violating asymmetries for flavour-specific channels. These are the first measurements in charmless decays reported by Belle~II. Results are compatible with known determinations and show detector performance comparable with the best Belle results offering a reliable basis to assess projections for future reach., Comment: 33 pages, 22 figures. Abstract

In the Standard Model (SM) charmless hadronic decays $B_s^0 \rightarrow \eta^\prime \eta$ proceed via tree-level $b\to u$ and penguin $b\to s$ transitions. Penguin transitions are sensitive to Beyond-the-Standard-Model (BSM) physics scenarios and could affect the branching fractions and {\it CP} asymmetries in such decays. Once branching fractions for two-body decays $B_s \to \eta\eta, \eta\eta^{\prime}, \eta^{\prime}\eta^{\prime} $ are measured, and the theoretical uncertainties are reduced, it would be possible to extract {\it CP} violating parameters from the data using the formalism based on SU(3)/U(3) symmetry. To achieve this goal, at least four of these six branching fractions need to be measured. Only the branching fraction for $B_s^0 \to \eta^{\prime}\eta^{\prime}$ has been measured so far.
