Background Herbivorous arthropods induce their hosts to form plant structures where they shelter during unfavorable periods. The boll weevil Anthonomus grandis grandis (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) can spend the off-season inside cotton plant structures, known as dry boll, protected from pesticides, natural enemies, and the heat and desiccation of the soil surface, increasing its survival and preserving its reproductive capacity. However, the relationship between the boll weevil and dry boll formation requires further study. The formation and external and internal characteristics of dry boll in cotton plants infested by boll weevils and the emergence and survival of this insect in these structures during infestation were evaluated. Results Plants infested by boll weevil formed almost twice as many dry bolls, which were 2.3 times heavier and with a diameter 1.7 times larger than those formed by non-infested plants. Conclusion Weevils induce the formation of structures in cotton plants to increase their survival during the crop off-season.

Background: To control the boll weevil Anthonomus grandis grandis (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), a key pest of cotton in the Americas, insecticides have been intensively used to manage their populations, increasing selection pressure for resistant populations. Thus, this study aimed detect insecticide resistance and assess insecticide control failure likelihhod of boll weevil populations exposed to malathion, profenophos+cypermethrin, and fipronil insecticides. Results: Twelve populations of the boll weevil were collected from commercial cotton fileds of the state of Bahia, northeastern Brazil. These populations were exposed to malathion, profenophos+cypermethrin mixture and fipronil, at their respective maximum label dose for field applications. Three replicates of ten adult beetles were exposed to the insecticides and mortality was recorded 24 hours after exposure to the insecticides. The control failure likelihood was determined after 48 hours. The highest median lethal times (LT50) were observed for malathion and the profenophos+cypermethrin mixture. Resistance to at least one insecticide was detected in 11 populations; three populations were resistant to malathion and profenophos+cypermethrin; seven were resistant to all insecticides used. The resistance levels were low (Conclusion: The results confirm the significant risk of insecticide control failure in the boll weevil populations to the main compounds used in the region. Thus, proper insecticide resistance management plans are necessary for the boll weevil in the region, particularly for malathion and fipronil insecticides.

The Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), is one of the main pests of fruit, worldwide, and the use of population suppression method with low environmental impact is an increasingly strong requirement of the consumer market. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of mineral and natural films on the physical–chemical properties of grapes (Vitis vinifera L.), cultivar Itália, and oviposition behaviour of C. capitata. Fruits were immersed in suspensions (100 and 200 g L−1) of mineral (kaolin Surround®WP, kaolin 607, kaolin 608, kaolin 611 and talc) and natural films (chitosan, cassava starch, potato starch and guar gum 5.0 g L−1) and distilled water (control). After drying, fruits were exposed to C. capitata pairs of males and females for 24 h in choice and non-choice tests; the number of punctures with and without eggs, eggs per fruit and behavioural response of fly to treated and untreated fruits were recorded. Results obtained in this study are promising, given the scientific evidence that films of mineral particles such as kaolin (Surround®, 607, 608 and 611) changed the firmness, luminosity, chroma and hue angle of grapes and reduced the oviposition of C. capitata. In addition, our results also showed that natural polymers do not deter C. capitata females, but rather seem to stimulate oviposition.

In the management of this insect pest, insecticide applications at reduced rates are fundamental for improve the operational capacity of the sprayer and the rational use of water. Thus, the aim of this study was to select a application rate that ensures effectiveness of cyantraniliprole, cartape hydrochloride and beta-cypermethrin insecticides in the leaf miner control, good spraying quality with varying application rates and low impact on natural parasitism. The qualitative and quantitative aspects of spraying with the Brilliant Blue marker were evaluated at the following rates: 28.1, 60.5, 80.2 and 180.0 L ha-1 and the efficacy of cyantraniliprole, cartape hydrochloride and beta-cypermethrin insecticides, with doses of the commercial formulations. Pest infestation and parasitism were determined before and after applications. Application rate interferes with qualitative aspects and spray deposition levels. Considering the quality-quantitative aspects and Agronomic Efficacy, rates between 80.2 and 180.0 L ha-1 are the most suitable for the control of this insect. Cyantra-niliprole insecticide is effective in controlling L. coffeella up to 45 DAA at rate of 180.0 L ha-1. The impact of cyantraniliprole, cartape hydrochloride and beta-cypermethrin insecticides on L. coffeella natural parasitism varies with application rates and time after application. Growers rely on synthetic insecticides to control the boll weevil throughout the reproductive cotton stage. An average of 19.6 insecticide applications (range: 10 to 30) for control of boll weevil were found in a survey with growers in the Brazilian Cerrado, covering an area of 494,100 hectares of cotton. Twenty-one insecticides were applied, with 64.8% of the applications made with malathion, fipronil, carbosulfan, and thiamethoxam + lambda-cyhalothrin. These four insecticides were used by 100, 76, 70, and 62% of the growers, with respectively 7.2, 2.1, 1.8, and 1.6 applications. Growers classified their boll weevil control achieved into four categories (fair, good, very good, or excellent), without correlation between these categories with the number of insecticide applications. Control of cotton regrowth and volunteer cotton plants were the major obstacles for effective boll weevil management, followed by the low efficacy of insecticides. Five registered insecticides to spray cotton against other pests than boll weevil were enlisted by growers with potential for recommendation. A boll weevil standard population for susceptibility was assayed with 27 insecticides and the results presented within a failure risk quotient (FRQ). The FRQ of eight, six, and 13 of the 27 tested insecticides was high, intermediate, and low, respectively. The high FRQ included 7 of 10 pyrethroid formulations, pymetrozine, and methomyl. On the opposite end, fipronil had the lowest FRQ value.

Anastrepha obliqua (Macquart, 1835) is an important pest of tropical fruits, especially Anacardiaceae and Myrtaceae, in the Americas. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of mineral films and biomaterials on the coloring of guava fruits (Psidium guajava L.) and implications for the oviposition of A. obliqua. Before the bioassays, color, firmness characteristics, total soluble solids, pH, and titratable acidity were determined to characterize the maturation stage of the fruits. Pieces of guava fruit covered in aluminum foil were immersed in suspensions of mineral particles (Surround® WP kaolin, kaolins 605, 607, 608, and 611, and talc) and biomaterials (chitosan, cassava and potato starch, and guar gum) and distilled water (control). After drying, the fruits were exposed to two A. obliqua pairs for 48 h in choice and non-choice tests, and the numbers of eggs per fruit were counted. Mineral films (Surround® WP kaolin, and kaolins 605, 607, 608, and 611) and biomaterials (cassava and potato starch) interfered with the color of guava (luminosity, chroma, and hue angle), inhibiting the oviposition of A. obliqua. Talc, chitosan, and guar gum did not influence the oviposition of A. obliqua in guava.

We therefore described the occurrence of leaf-cutting and grass-cutting ant species of the genus Atta. Five routes comprising some of the main highways in the South, Southeast, Midwest, and North of Brazil were sampled, in addition to ants received from other 82 municipalities, composing 300 municipalities sampled. This is the first comprehensive study of Atta in Brazil. The following species and subespecies were found: A. laevigata, A. capiguara, A. sexdens rubropilosa, A. sexdens piriventris, A. sexdens sexdens, and A. cephalotes. Atta laevigata and A. capiguara were the species present in the largest number of the Brazilian municipalities sampled. Atta sexdens piriventris was only recorded in the southern region of Brazil. Atta bisphaerica presented lower expansion than A. capiguara. Atta cephalotes and Atta opaciceps are species of very restricted occurrence. Southeastern region was characterized by the occurrence of A. capiguara and A. laevigata. Atta laevigata exhibited a generalized pattern of occurrence in the Midwest and North. Our study contributes to a better understanding of the so far unknown occurrence of leaf-cutting and grass-cutting ants within Brazil. The Neotropical coffee leaf miner is a key coffee pest and in the state of Bahia, one of the major coffee-producing states in the country. The insect finds favorable conditions for its development, causing production losses and intensive use of insecticides. Thus, the objective of the study was to analyze aspects of the profile of coffee crops and the management of the leaf miner, including the use of insecticide for the western and highland regions of Bahia. Data were obtained through questionnaires applied to coffee growers and/or production technicians and included information on the total area, area with coffee, and native vegetation, type of cultivation, cultivars, pest monitoring, methods of control and use, insecticide rotation, and doses used. Descriptive statistical analysis, principal component analysis (PCA), and canonical correlations indicated differences between farm size, and areas with coffee and native vegetation. Chemical pest control prevails as a management strategy in all farms. The results are important for managing the coffee leaf miner while providing an overview and diagnosis of insecticide use in coffee production in the state of Bahia. An increase in the application of systemic insecticides took place in recent years, similarly (same active ingredients) among most coffee growers. This fact increases the risk of selecting populations resistant to insecticides, compromising the management of the leaf miner in the regions.

O objetivo do trabalho foi estimar a formação de carimãs em diferentes cultivares de algodoeiro e a sobrevivência dos bicudos no interior dessas estruturas vegetais. A formação de carimãs foi estimada nas cultivares de algodão FM 975 WS, FM 944 GL, FM 982 GL e FM 910. Maçãs secas (carimãs) de cada cultivar foram coletadas em 20 pontos amostrais em uma área de dois hectares. Os carimãs coletados foram transportados para o laboratório e dissecados para contagem dos bicudos adultos no seu interior. A sobrevivência de adultos do bicudo foi avaliada por meio da coleta de 750 carimãs da cultivar FM 910, dissecando-se posteriormente 50 carimãs a cada 15 dias, a partir da data de coleta até 210 dias, quantificando-se adultos vivos e mortos. Os adultos foram alimentados com botões florais de Hibiscus sp. até a morte. Os resultados demonstraram que a formação de maçãs secas que não se abrem (carimãs) varia com o tipo de cultivar de algodão escolhida para plantio. A grande maioria da população de bicudos aprisionados nos lóculos dos carimãs não sobrevive por longo período de tempo, embora uma porção bastante reduzida dessa população seja capaz de sobreviver e emergir dessas estruturas por mais de cinco meses.

Several fruit fly species (Diptera: Tephritidae and Lonchaeidae) assume the status of primary pests in fruit trees grown in Brazil, causing direct production losses. The aims of the study were to know aspects of diversity of fruit flies and their parasitoids in the fruit growing region of Livramento de Nossa Senhora, Bahia. Fruit samples were collected from 19 plant species during November/2011 and June/2014. Infestation rates were calculated in pupae.kg-1 of fruit and pupae.fruit-1. The results indicate the occurrence of Anastrepha obliqua (Macquart), Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) and Neosilba pendula (Bezzi). Plant species Anacardium occidentale, Averrhoa carambola, Carica papaya, Eugenia uniflora, Malpighia emarginata, Mangifera indica var. “Haden”, “Rosa” and “Tommy Atkins”, Opuntia ficus indica, Pereskia bahiensis, Psidium guajava, Spondias lutea, Spondias purpurea and Spondias tuberosa are hosts of fruit flies in the region. Unprecedented bitrophic relationships between P. bahiensis and C. capitata and Anastrepha sp. and between Opuntia ficus indica and C. capitata and A. obliqua were recorded. Unprecedented tritrophic relationship for the state of Bahia Averrhoa carambola and C. capitata and parasitoid of the Pteromalidae Family were also recorded. Tritrophic associations between M. indica var. “Tommy Atkins” and S. purpurea and A. obliqua and Doryctobracon areolatus; and between S. purpurea and A. obliqua and Utetes anastrephae were observed. RESUMO Várias espécies de moscas frugívoras (Diptera: Tephritidae e Lonchaeidae) assumem o status de pragas primárias em fruteiras cultivadas no Brasil, determinando prejuízos diretos à produção. O objetivo do trabalho foi conhecer aspectos da diversidade de moscas frugívoras e seus parasitoides no polo de fruticultura de Livramento de Nossa Senhora-BA. Foram realizadas amostragens de frutos em 19 espécies vegetais durante novembro/2011 e junho/2014. Foram calculados os índices de infestação em pupário.kg-1 de fruto e pupário.fruto-1. Os resultados indicaram a ocorrência de Anastrepha obliqua (Macquart), Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) e Neosilba pendula (Bezzi). As espécies vegetais Anacardium occidentale, Averrhoa carambola, Carica papaya, Eugenia uniflora, Malpighia emarginata, Mangifera indica var. “Haden”, “Rosa” e “Tommy Atkins”, Opuntia ficus indica, Pereskia bahiensis, Psidium guajava, Spondias lutea, Spondias purpurea e Spondias tuberosa são hospedeiros de moscas frugívoras na região. Registram-se, as relações bitróficas inéditas entre P. bahiensis e C. capitata e Anastrepha sp.; e entre Opuntia fícus indica e C. capitata e Anastrepha obliqua. Registra-se a relação tritrófica inédita para o Estado da Bahia A. carambola e C. capitata e parasitoide da Família Pteromalidae. Foram contatadas, também, as associações tritróficas entre M. indica var. “Tommy Atkins” e S. purpurea e A. obliqua e Doryctobracon areolatus; e entre S. purpurea e A. obliqua e Utetes anastrephae.

The aim of this study was to explore the diversity of lacewings in two coffee (Coffea arabica L.) cropping systems, located in the southwestern region of Bahia State, Brazil, and to study the structure of their communities and the seasonal occurrence of the species. These studies were conducted from December 2003 to November 2004, with coffee plants that were either shaded or unshaded by silky oak trees (Grevillea robusta A. Cunn.) at a property located in the municipality of Barra do Choca, Bahia State. Monthly collections were carried out with insect nets and traps baited with mango juice and hydrolyzed protein. The characterization of the Chrysopidae community was calculated by faunal indices, relative frequency, constancy, dominance, richness and diversity. The study on the species seasonal occurrence was conducted with the total number of specimens within each collection time and sampling. In order to assess the effects of climatic factors, only species classified as constant were considered. The occurrence of the following 15 species, in association with coffee plants, was recorded: Ceraeochrysa cubana, Ceraeochrysa cincta, Ceraeochrysa dislepis, Ceraeochrysa everes, Chrysoperla externa, Chrysopodes spinella, Leucochrysa guataparensis, Leucochrysa cruentata, Leucochrysa intermedia, Leucochrysa rodriguezi, Leucochrysa santini, Leucochrysa scomparini, Leucochrysa cidae, Leucochrysa annae and Leucochrysa sp.4. There was a considerable difference in community structures regarding the occurrence of different species and abundance of individuals. The species C. cincta, L. guataparensis, L. cidae and L. sp.4 occurred exclusively on shaded coffee plants, while L. cruentata, L. intermedia, L. scomparini and L. annae were found only on unshaded plants. On the other hand, C. externa and L. rodriguezi stood out in both environments. C. externa was the most frequent and dominant species in both cropping systems, as it was considered constant on unshaded coffee plants and accessory on shaded plants. C. everes, C. externa and C. spinella occur during the day; C. cincta, C. dislepis, L. guataparensis, L. rodriguezi, L. cidae, L. cruentata, L. intermedia, L. santini, L. scomparini and L. annae occur during the night; and only the species C. cuban was collected during both the day and night. The leaf miner is a key pest of coffee and the use of insecticides for its control results in high water consumption. The objective in this study was to evaluate the quali-quantitative aspects of reduced spray volumes with and without the addition of adjuvant, the efficacy of the insecticide cartap hydrochloride in the control of the pest and its effects on the parasitism. Two experiments were carried out in coffee plantations in São Desiderio, BA. Initially, solution of Brilliant Blue tracer (0.15% p v-1) of the 43, 112, 146 and 309 L ha-1 volumes was sprayed with and without the soybean oil methyl ester adjuvant (0.25 % v v-1). Before spraying, water-sensitive cards were fixed to the plants and subsequently used for analyze the droplet spectrum in Gotas 1.0 software. The tracer deposit was determined by spectrophotometry. Posteriorly, the insecticide cartap hydrochloride (0.5 kg a.i. ha-1) was applied in the same volumes and types of spray used in the first test. Infestation rates of pest and parasitism were evaluated before and after application of the insecticide. The quali-quantitative aspects of the sprays were affected by the volume of spray applied, by the adjuvant and by the interaction of the factors. The intermediate volumes yielded better spraying quality without the presence of the adjuvante, with higher number and desity of drops. The spraying volume affected the depoisto the Brilliant Blue tracer in a linear and positive form. The efficacy of the insecticide was prolonged with the lowest volume spray and with adjuvant and its impact on parasitism varied with the volume applied and time after application.

The Mediterranean fruit fly Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann, 1824) (Diptera: Tephritidae) is the main pest of fruit crops worldwide due to its broad distribution, direct damages, and adaptation to different hosts. Developing diets for the rearing fruit flies is essential for integrated management of this pest. Mass rearing of parasitoids, selection of preferred hosts, and mass rearing of genetically modified C. capitata strains subsidize methods of biological control, cultural control, and the sterile insect technique (SIT), respectively, depending directly on the mass rearing of the Mediterranean fruit fly. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of artificial diets for rearing C. capitata larvae considering the cost of those most appropriate diets. Nine diets containing different combinations of protein and energy sources (brewer’s yeast, yeast extract, pollen, soybean extract, oatmeal, corn meal, and wheat germ) were formulated. The parameters immature development time (hatching), pupal viability (emerged adults), size and weight of pupae, and adult size (wing length) were assessed. The experiments were conducted in the laboratory under controlled conditions of temperature (26 ± 1 °C) and relative humidity (70% ± 10%). Statistical analysis was performed by using ANOVA with the Tukey’s test for comparison of means. Diets based on oatmeal and soybean extract, both added with brewer’s yeast, yeast extract, or pollen satisfactorily meet the nutritional requirements of C. capitata. Moreover, diets enriched with brewer’s yeast or yeast extract presented the lowest costs; therefore, they could be used in a continuous mass-scale rearing of C. capitata. Diets based on corn meal and soybean extract, both associated with brewer’s yeast, yeast extract, or pollen are more economical, but they should not be used for rearing C. capitata because they decrease the percentage of hatching and extend life cycle. Diets based on wheat germ and oatmeal, both added with brewer’s yeast, yeast extract, or pollen are not adequate for rearing C. capitata.

O Brasil é o terceiro produtor mundial de frutas, destacando-se a Região Nordeste como uma das principais produtoras. Na Bahia, dez polos de fruticultura são importantes na exportação de frutas frescas. O polo de Livramento de Nossa Senhora tem referência nos cultivos da manga, maracujá e banana. O objetivo do trabalho foi realizar um diagnóstico sobre aspectos da produção de banana, manga e maracujá, voltados ao perfil do produtor, da propriedade e do uso de agrotóxicos, devolução de embalagens vazias e descarte de resíduos. Foram aplicados 610 questionários, abrangendo 20% dos produtores de cada frutífera. Os produtores têm baixo grau de escolaridade, dificultando a compreensão do uso de agrotóxicos de forma correta. A assistência técnica por meio de órgãos públicos é insuficiente e realizada pelos profissionais das casas comerciais. O uso de EPI não é prática persistente e a lavagem dos equipamentos é realizada em tanque de uso doméstico. Ações de educação sanitária devem ser desenvolvidas, com atenção aos produtores de maracujá, que, por serem mais jovens, podem se tornar multiplicadores dos conhecimentos necessários para uso de agrotóxicos.

The objective of this study was to compare the use of fruits of great economic and social importance for the northeast of Brazil by Ceratitis capitata Wied. (Diptera: Tephritidae) for oviposition, larval development, size and longevity of adults. Fruits of mango (Mangifera indica L.), quiabento (Pereskia bahiensis Gürke), forage palm [Opuntia fícus indica (L.) Mill] and grape (Vitis vinifera L.) were used, as well as flies from a hybrid laboratory population. Initially, four treatments (fruits) and six replications were used; the fruits were offered to 10 C. capitata couples, with later (96 hours) egg count. The second was conducted with six treatments and 10 replicates, offering two types of fruits simultaneously, combined two to two, to 10 C. capitata couples. The last bioassay comprised four treatments and six replicates, where 20 g of fruit were offered to 20 first-instar C. capitata larvae. After six days, the larvae were placed in plastic pots containing vermiculite until pupation, quantifying larval and pupal periods, viability and pupal mass, besides longevity and adult size. The data were submitted to ANOVA using the R Core Team software. Ceratitis capitata oviposits and completes its biological cycle in the four hosts studied, exhibiting no preference for oviposition and low biological performance in quiabento fruits. It yielded smaller adults and lower grape survival. Cactaceae palm and quiabento allow the survival of C. capitata in the laboratory, and this knowledge has been reported for the first time, proving that they can act as alternative hosts in the field. RESUMO: O objetivo do estudo foi comparar a utilização de frutos de importância econômica e social para o nordeste do Brasil por Ceratitis capitata Wied. (Diptera: Tephritidae) para oviposição, desenvolvimento larval, tamanho e longevidade de adultos. Foram utilizados frutos de manga (Mangifera indica L.), quiabento (Pereskia bahiensis Gürke), palma-forrageira [Opuntia fícus indica (L.) Mill] e uva (Vitis vinifera L.) e moscas procedentes de uma população híbrida de laboratório. Inicialmente, utilizaram-se quatro tratamentos (frutos) e seis repetições, com o oferecimento dos frutos a 10 casais de C. capitata, com posterior (96 horas) contagem de ovos. O segundo teste foi conduzido com seis tratamentos e 10 repetições, oferecendo-se dois tipos de frutos simultaneamente, combinados dois a dois, a 10 casais de C. capitata. O último bioensaio compreendeu quatro tratamentos e seis repetições, sendo oferecidos 20 g de fruto a 20 larvas de primeiro instar de C. capitata. Após seis dias, as larvas foram colocadas em potes plásticos contendo vermiculita até a empupação, quantificando-se: períodos larval e pupal, viabilidade e massa pupal e longevidade e tamanho do adulto. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância (ANOVA) pelo Programa R Core Team. Ceratitis capitata oviposita e completa seu ciclo biológico nos quatro hospedeiros estudados, exibindo não preferência para oviposição e baixa performance biológica em frutos de quiabento. Este proporcionou adultos menores e a uva permitiu a menor sobrevivência. As cactáceas palma e quiabento permitem a sobrevivência de C. capitata em laboratório, sendo esse conhecimento relatado pela primeira vez, comprovando que essas espécies podem atuar como hospedeiros alternativos no campo.
