Predicting and modeling the behavior of experiments with radiation waves propagating through low-density foams require a detailed quantification of the numerous uncertainties present. In regimes where a prominent radiative shock is produced, key dynamical features include the shock position, temperature, and curvature and the spatial distribution and temperature of the corresponding supersonic radiation wave. The COAX experimental platform is designed to constrain numerical models of such a radiative shock propagating through a low-density foam by employing radiography for spatial and shock information, Dante for characterizing the x-ray flux from the indirectly driven target, and a novel spectral diagnostic designed to probe the temperature profile of the wave. In this work, we model COAX with parameterized 2D simulations and a Hohlraum-laser modeling package to study uncertainties in diagnosing the experiment. The inferred temperature profile of the COAX radiation transport experiments has been shown to differ from simulations more than expected from drive uncertainties that have been constrained by simultaneous soft x-ray flux and radiography measurements.

The breakout of a supernova blast wave from its progenitor star provides strong constraints on the star and its immediate surroundings. These surroundings are shaped by mass loss from the star and can include a wide variety of inhomogeneities. The composition and thickness of thin films determine their physical properties, making the ability to measure the number of atoms of different elements in films both technologically and scientifically important. For thin films, below a certain thickness, the X-ray fluorescence intensity of an element is proportional to the number of atoms. Converting this intensity to the number of atoms per unit area is challenging due to experimental geometries and other correction factors. Hence, the ratio of intensities is more commonly used to determine the composition in terms of element ratios using standards or a model. Here, the number of atoms per unit area was determined using X-ray structure information for over 20 different crystallographically aligned samples with integral unit cell thicknesses. Preparing homologous series of compounds allows chemists to rapidly discover new compounds with predictable structure and properties. Synthesizing compounds within such a series involves navigating a free energy landscape defined by the interactions within and between constituent atoms. Historically, synthesis approaches are typically limited to forming only the most thermodynamically stable compound under the reaction conditions. Presented here is the synthesis, via self-assembly of designed precursors, of isocompositional incommensurate layered compounds [(BiSe)1+δ] m[TiSe2] m with m = 1, 2, and 3. The structure of the BiSe bilayer in the m = 1 compound is not that of the binary compound, and this is the first example of compounds where a BiSe layer thicker than a bilayer in heterostructures has been prepared. Specular and in-plane X-ray diffraction combined with high-resolution electron microscopy data was used to follow the formation of the compounds during low-temperature annealing and the subsequent decomposition of the m = 2 and 3 compounds into [(BiSe)1+δ]1[TiSe2]1 at elevated temperatures. These results show that the structure of the precursor can be used to control reaction kinetics, enabling the synthesis of kinetically stable compounds that are not accessible via traditional techniques. The data collected as a function of temperature and time enabled us to schematically construct the topology of the free energy landscape about the local free energy minima for each of the products.

Predicting and matching radiation wave propagation with computational models has proven difficult. Information provided by experiments studying radiation flow has been limited when only radiation breakout is measured. We have developed the COAX (co-axial) diagnostic platform to provide spatial temperature profiles of a radiation wave through low density foams as a more detailed constraint for simulations. COAX uses a standard, laser-driven OMEGA-60 halfraum to drive radiation down a titanium-laden silicon oxide foam. Point-projection X-ray absorption spectroscopy perpendicular to the radiation flow measures the spatial profile of titanium ionization. The spectroscopic measurement utilizes a broadband capsule backlighter. Imaging and streak spectroscopy are used to characterize the size and spectrum of this source. Radiography provides an additional constraint by capturing the developing shock as the radiation flow becomes subsonic. The DANTE diagnostic is used to measure the halfraum temperature. We provide a spectroscopic analysis of COAX data to determine temperature, and we describe experimental sources of uncertainty. The temperature is obtained by comparison to multi-temperature synthetic spectra post-processed from radiation-hydrodynamics simulations. Quantitative comparison between data and synthetic spectra generated from temperature profiles at relevant simulation times enable determination of a peak temperature of 114 ± 8 eV at 265 ± 22.4 μ m from the halfraum. This represents an improvement over the temperature uncertainties of previous radiation flow experiments. Further refinements to the spectroscopic analysis could achieve ± 4 eV. The combination between space-resolved spectroscopy and radiography enables us to determine the distance from the halfraum of both the radiation front and the shock front at the time of measurement. For the example shown in this paper the radiation front position is 600–630 μ m at 3.43 ± 0.16 ns and the shock front position is 633 μ m at 3.3 ± 0.24 ns.

A series of (PbSe)1+δ(VSe2)n heterostructures with extensive turbostratic disorder were synthesized with n = 1–3 through low temperature annealing of appropriately designed layered precursors. The crystal structures consist of alternating layers of CdI2 type structured VSe2 and distorted NaCl type structured PbSe. The n = 1 compound has a positive Hall coefficient and a charge density wave like transition at 100 K, during which the resistivity increases by a factor of 3.5 and the Hall coefficient increases by a factor of 8. The n = 2 and 3 compounds have negative Hall coefficients and significantly smaller changes in the slope of the resistivity and Hall coefficient as a function of temperature at similar temperatures. The distinctly different transport properties of the compound containing a monolayer of VSe2 compared to compounds with thicker VSe2 layers highlights the complexity of the electronic structure of these stacked systems. Amorphous metal oxides are central to a variety of technological applications. In particular, indium gallium oxide has garnered attention as a thin-film transistor channel layer material. In this work we examine the structural evolution of indium gallium oxide gel-derived powders and thin films using infrared vibrational spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and pair distribution function (PDF) analysis of X-ray total scattering from standard and normal incidence thin-film geometries (tfPDF). We find that the gel-derived powders and films from the same aqueous precursor evolve differently with temperature, forming mixtures of Ga-substituted In2O3 and In-substituted β-Ga2O3 with different degrees of substitution. X-ray total scattering and PDF analysis indicate that the majority phase for both the powders and films is an amorphous/nanocrystalline β-Ga2O3 phase, with a minor constituent of In2O3 with significantly larger coherence lengths. Controlling carrier concentration is critical in many device applications, and both chemical substitution and modulation doping have been used in industry. For most inorganic materials, very low doping efficiencies are observed as site occupancies depend on both thermodynamic and kinetic factors. We demonstrate that we can make kinetically controlled site-specific substitutions in a series of (BixSn1–xSe)1+δTiSe2 compounds using the modulated elemental reactants method. These compounds were characterized using a combination of X-ray diffraction, resistivity and Hall coefficient measurements, and high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF STEM). For small x, the doping efficiency is 0.7, close to that observed for B in silicon. For higher x values, a structural distortion is observed in X-ray diffraction data in which the symmetry of the in-plane unit cell decreases. One of the difficulties in developing accurate numerical models of radiation flow in a coupled radiation-hydrodynamics setting is accurately modeling the transmission across a boundary layer. The COAX experiment is a platform design to test this transmission including standard radiograph and flux diagnostics as well as a temperature diagnostic measuring the population of excitation levels and ionization states of a dopant embedded within the target material. Using a broad range of simulations, we study the experimental errors in this temperature diagnostic. Solid-state 71Ga NMR was used to characterize a series of [Ga13(μ3-OH)6(μ2-OH)18(H2O)](NO3)15 “Ga13” molecular clusters synthesized by multiple methods. These molecular clusters are precursors to thin film electronics and may be employed in energy applications. The synthetic routes provide varying levels of impurities in the solid phase, and these impurities often elude traditional characterization techniques such as powder X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Solid-state NMR can provide a window into the gallium species even in amorphous phases. This information is vital in order to prevent the impurities from causing defect sites in the corresponding thin films upon gelation and condensation (polymerization) of the Ga13 clusters. This work demonstrates the resolving power of solid-state NMR to evaluate structure and synthetic quality in the solid state, and the application of high-field NMR to study quadrupolar species, such as 71Ga.

A series of (BiSe)1+δ(TiSe2)n compounds where n was varied from two to four were synthesized and electrically characterized to explore the extent of charge transfer from the BiSe layer to the TiSe2 layers. These kinetically stable heterostructures were prepared using the modulated elemental reactants (MER) method, in which thin amorphous elemental layers are deposited in an order that mimics the nanostructure of the desired product. X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray area diffraction, and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) data show that the precursors formed the desired products. Specular diffraction scans contain only 00l reflections, indicating that the compounds are crystallographically aligned with the c-axis perpendicular to the substrate. The c-axis lattice parameter increases by 0.604(3) nm with each additional TiSe2 layer. Small organic compounds are increasingly being invoked as important players in atmospheric processes that occur on aerosol surfaces. The diacid succinic acid is one such constituent that is prevalent in the troposphere, surface active, and also water-soluble. This article presents a thorough examination of the surface characteristics of succinic acid at the vapor/water interface using a combination of theoretical simulation and experiments using vibrational sum frequency spectroscopy and surface tension. The adsorption and orientation of succinic acid at the water surface is characterized for a series of aqueous solution compositions relevant to atmospheric conditions. Fully protonated succinic acid is found to be particularly surface active. A new computational technique is introduced that provides a detailed picture of the different surface species that are contributing to the experimentally derived spectroscopic measurements. Additional results are presented for how SO2, a copollutant of succinic acid in the atmosphere, behaves at a water surface in the presence of surface adsorbed succinic acid.

Los Alamos National Laboratory has calculated a new generation of radiative opacities (OPLIB data using the ATOMIC code) for elements with atomic number Z=1-30 with improved physics input, updated atomic data, and finer temperature grid to replace the Los Alamos LEDCOP opacities released in the year 2000. We calculate the evolution of standard solar models including these new opacities, and compare with models evolved using the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory OPAL (Iglesias and Rogers 1996) opacities. We use the solar abundance mixture of Asplund et al. (2009). The new Los Alamos ATOMIC opacities have steeper opacity derivatives than those of OPAL for temperatures and densities of the solar interior radiative zone. We compare the calculated nonadiabatic solar oscillation frequencies and solar interior sound speed to observed frequencies and helioseismic inferences. The calculated sound-speed profiles are similar for models evolved using either the updated Iben evolution code (see \cite{Guzik2010}), or the MESA evolution code (Paxton et al., 2015). Homogeneous reaction precursors may be used to form several solid-state compounds inaccessible by traditional synthetic routes, but there has been little development of techniques that allow for a priori prediction of what may crystallize in a given material system. Here, the local structures of FeSbx designed precursors are determined and compared with the structural motifs of their crystalline products. X-ray total scattering and atomic pair distribution function (PDF) analysis are used to show that precursors that first nucleate a metastable FeSb3 compound share similar local structure to the product. Interestingly, precursors that directly crystallize to thermodynamically stable FeSb2 products also contain local structural motifs of the metastable phase, despite their compositional disagreement. While both crystalline phases consist of distorted FeSb6 octahedra with Sb shared between either two or three octahedra as required for stoichiometry, a corner-sharing arrangement indicative of AX3-type structures is the only motif apparent in the PDF of either precursor. Prior speculation was that local composition controlled which compounds nucleate from amorphous intermediates, with different compositions favoring different local arrangements and hence different products. This data suggests that local environments in these amorphous intermediates may not be very sensitive to overall composition. This can provide insight into potential metastable phases which may form in a material system, even with a precursor that does not crystallize to the kinetically stabilized product. Determination of local structure in homogeneous amorphous reaction intermediates from techniques such as PDF can be a valuable asset in the development of systematic methods to prepare targeted solid-state compounds from designed precursors.

The behavior of complex interfacial systems is central to an ever-increasing number of applications. Vibrational sum frequency (VSF) spectroscopy is a powerful technique for obtaining surface specific structural information. The coherent nature of VSF that provides surface specificity, however, also creates difficulty in spectral interpretation especially as the system complexity increases. Computations of VSF spectra shed light on the molecular level source of the experimental VSF signal, allowing for the analysis of more complicated systems. Unfortunately, the majority of calculations of VSF spectra look at the response of the solvent or of rigid molecules and therefore often poorly reflect the experimental environment of most VSF spectroscopic measurements. In this work, flexible solute molecules at interfaces are investigated by doubling down, obtaining and comparing experimental and theoretical spectra, to determine a more accurate computational treatment. The surface behavior and VSF spectra of glutaric acid and adipic acid at the air/water interface are determined experimentally and calculated using a combination of classical molecular dynamics and density functional theory. Both diacids are found to be surface active. At high concentrations, glutaric acid forms dimers altering its VSF response and acidic properties. Calculated VSF spectra are found to be sensitive to vibrational mode frequencies, with ordering and spacing affecting relative intensities, as well as molecular conformation. A proper description requires consideration of multiple conformers and anharmonic effects on the molecular vibrational energies.
