7. What is Growth Need Strength?

Abstract

This study investigated the nature of the individual difference factor Growth Need Strength (GNS), found by Hackman and Oldham (1976), to moderate the relationship between job characteristics and job satisfaction. Studies 1 and la report the results of a partial test and extension of the Job Characteristics Model using data from 692 employees working on 71 jobs in 4 organisations. The model was extended to investigate the moderating effects of personality, general values and work values, and the psychometric properties of the measures for GNS were assessed. The results found support for the moderating effect of GNS on the relationship specified above, employing moderated multiple regression analysis using multiplicative interactions terms, but no moderating effect was found for other variables tested. A relationship was found between GNS, Openness to Experience three of the general values and three work values domains, but GNS was found to be psychometrically distinct from them. In Study 2, the nature of GNS was examined using the Interpretative Phenomenological Approach (IPA), for data collected from experts in human resources. Using results from the two studies, a model was proposed in Study 3, for how and under what conditions GNS predicts those who take up of training opportunities. This model was tested using data from 64 employees in one organisation and the results show that, paradoxically, high GNS predicted low intention to train and low training activity. It was also predicted that employees’ general and work values would mediate the influence of their GNS on the taking up of training opportunities. No support was found for this. Overall the results suggest that GNS may be a higher-order factor of personality and this has numerous implications for research and practice in occupational psychology, especially in the field of employee training and development.

18. Study of Young People Permanently Excluded from School. Research Report.

Abstract

This study tracked the careers, over 2 years, of 193 young English people (particularly at-risk groups) after their permanent exclusion from mainstream schools during 9th, 10th, or 11th grade. The study investigated the impact of pre- and post-exclusion processes, provisions, and outcomes on these young people's life-chances and wider indicators of interventions that made a positive difference. Data from interviews, informal contact, and document analysis indicated that many young people had severe social difficulties beyond school prior to exclusion. Those who considered their exclusion unfair were more likely to be engaged in education, training, or work 2 years later than those accepting the exclusion as fair. Approximately half of the respondents were engaged in education, training, or employment 2 years after permanent exclusion. In achieving these outcomes, several factors were important, including belief in their own abilities, support from family members or friends in networking into the community, and feeling that their permanent exclusion was unjust. Ethnicity rarely related to outcome. No one type of provision was associated with achieving more successful outcomes. The mean time from exclusion until school districts made offers of substantial alternative placement was 3.3 months. Re-integration into mainstream schools often failed. It explores the role of prescribing as an indicator of professional power, the legitimacy and status of new pharmacist prescribers and the forces influencing professional jurisdictional claims over the task of prescribing. It draws upon 23 interviews with pharmacist supplementary prescribers. Data suggest that the legitimacy of pharmacists as prescribers, as experienced in the workplace, has been aided by: (1) blurred definitions of prescribing; (2) the emphasis on new prescribers' competence urging pharmacist prescribers to limit their areas of clinical practice; and (3) a team approach to patient management. Competence, self-limitation on practice and the benefits of team working as part of the ideology of patient safety were thus an important influence on pharmacists' jurisdictional claim over prescribing. While pharmacists have successfully negotiated a role for themselves as prescribers, medicine has retained its high status, relative to other health professionals and with patients; it controls the knowledge base relevant for prescribing practice and has managed to develop an 'overseer' role over the process of prescribing. Prescribing, as an indicator of medicine's autonomy of control over their work and professional status, has changed. Yet the extent to which new prescribers have been able to threaten the professional dominance of medicine is debatable. Abstract

This essay describes how 'rhetoric' came to be written historically in relation to woman's body. It shows how rhetoric, etymologically linked with both woman and horse, was progressively 'tamed' into a non-threatening force, and also how rhetoric/woman/horse simultaneously has resisted this taming. Using a collage procedure to cut and paste textual fragments of writing about rhetoric, the essay constructs an archetypal narrative plot and proceeds tropologically - metaphorically, metonymically, synecdochically, and ironically - to domesticate and unleash rhetoric/woman/horse.

32. Unreported accidents to patients in hospital

Abstract

A study of unreported accidents in a large acute hospital was carried out to investigate the incidence of unreported accidents compared to that of reported accidents in a 10-ward sample. The survey was carried out on three separate days over a 20 week period and included general surgery, general medicine and psychogeriatric wards. The study found that the 574 patients who were questioned sustained 75 accidents, of which 49 were reported and 26 were unreported. A description of the study is presented.

Abstract

The findings of a study into the incidence of accidents to patients in hospital show that falls to older people are the most common incidents. The study investigates 728 reported patient accidents in large acute hospitals. It reveals large differences between staff and patients' accounts of the accidents and finds that the most serious accidents tended to be the most poorly recorded.

34. Consent and privacy: an educator's role

If British Columbia’s public educational system is to remain relevant in this global society, it must utilize the same web based tools that are becoming commonplace in students’ daily lives. However the rate at which web based tools are being produced and used in schools is moving faster than districts have been able to deem them fit for safe use, leaving teachers in vulnerable positions. This leads us to question: (1) What do teachers need to be aware of in order to protect students’ privacy with respect to the use of web based tools?; and (2) What do parents need to be aware of and understand when giving informed voluntary consent for their child to use web based tools? This process paper and project explored privacy concerns regarding the use of web based tools from face-to-face (f2f) to fully online learning environments, and developed an electronic performance support system (EPSS), called “privacyhub” (since relocated to www.privacyhub.ca). The EPSS was a training portal and resource repository for privacy related material developed for use in School District 22 Vernon (SD 22) to: (1) assist educators in recognizing the privacy implications that are inherent in the use of web based tools; and (2) help mitigate privacy concerns for students, both provincially with respect to FIPPA (RSBC 1996), and locally with respect to SD 22 privacy policies. https://viurrspace.ca/bitstream/handle/10613/21746/BrandleSutton.pdf?sequence=3&isAllowed=y

35. The American Family as Seen in Basal Readers on the 1977 Indiana State Adoption List.

Abstract

The American family has undergone many changes in the last 20 years, due to divorce, death, or separation of parents, parents who have never married, and mothers who work. To determine how well school reading materials reflect the changing American family, seven basal reader series for grades four, five, and six were studied. Three random family stories from each book were examined. Family situations were categorized as (1) two-parent families, (2) one-parent families, (3) significant adults, and (4) siblings. Instances in which no mention was made of the family and those referring to the mother's working status were also recorded. The results showed that the number of times that many of the family situations were depicted reflected statistics of the population as a whole; however, there was no mention of stepparents, only one mention of the noncustodial parent, and few references to working mothers. 36. Aristotle, Motion, and Rhetoric.

Abstract

Aristotle rejects a world vision of changing reality as neither useful nor beneficial to human life, and instead he reaffirms both change and eternal reality, fuses motion and rest, and ends up with "well-behaved" changes. This concept of motion is foundational to his world view, and from it emerges his theory of knowledge, philosophy of nature, ethics and social philosophy. This theoretical underpinning also led to the production of Aristotle's "Rhetoric," and in fact gives meaning and significance to the art of rhetoric, otherwise delegated to deceitfulness and trickery. Just as motion has been shown to exist in the universe, so too must this principle be operative in rhetoric. Because of the complex relations between the perception, opinion, and thought Aristotle uses to confirm the existence of change, rhetoric is an instance of motion. Rhetoric, then, becomes a latent threat to the maintenance or justification of the "status quo." That is, thought and speech is forever on the move. In Book II of "Rhetoric," Aristotle discusses the audience as a psychologically knowable and finite quantity, whose beliefs--mere opinions in themselves--are nevertheless available as objects of certain knowledge. Discourse would comprise a body of statements that are logically mimetic of reality. For a statement to achieve its purpose of communicating the substance of a thing, the units of meaning in language must exist in a stable and univocal relationship to their objects. Aristotle's theory of rhetoric contains on its fringes another dimension, a world view of changing reality that has yet to take hold in postmodern Aristotelian rhetoric. (NKA)

Abstract

Invasive species constitute a significant environmental and economic threat worldwide, acting as a key driver of biodiversity loss and ecosystem function disruption globally. Biological invasions have the potential to dramatically affect species composition, guild structure and alter interspecific interactions within the invaded community. This book provides the reader with new research on invasive species. Chapter One reviews the adaptive responses of Phalaris arundinacea, an invasive wetland grass, to water stress. Chapter Two discusses the expansion of spider species to help better understand their potential for biological control of pests in agricultural landscapes and for conservation of biodiversity within the ecosystems in which they are found. Chapter Three explores the feasibility of using Parkinsonea aculeata wood as a feedstock for the sustainable development of adsorbents targeted at pollutants removal from wastewater. Chapter Four gives background information on several origins of invasive species, how invasive species respond to environmental changes, and insights on integrated management strategies that focus on enhancing species and ecosystem adaptive capacity and reducing the risks from biodiversity degradation.

42. Accidents to patients in hospital: a comparative study

A survey of accidents to patients in hospital has revealed that accident vulnerability was linked to poor mental status and urinary incontinence. The survey compared 50 patients who had suffered an accident, with 50 patients who had not. The occurrence of unreported patient accidents was also investigated and confirmed, and a subsequent survey is planned to address this subject.
