Abstract

OBJECTIVES: To assess associations between SARS-CoV-2 infection and the incidence of hospitalisation with selected respiratory and non-respiratory conditions in a largely SARS-CoV-2 vaccine-naïve population . DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS: Self-control case series; analysis of population-wide surveillance and administrative data for all laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases notified to the Victorian Department of Health (onset, 23 January 2020 - 31 May 2021; ie, prior to widespread vaccination rollout) and linked hospital admissions data (admission dates to 30 September 2021). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Hospitalisation of people with acute COVID-19; incidence rate ratios (IRRs) comparing incidence of hospitalisations with defined conditions (including cardiac, cerebrovascular, venous thrombo-embolic, coagulative, and renal disorders) from three days before to within 89 days of onset of COVID-19 with incidence during baseline period (60-365 days prior to COVID-19 onset). RESULTS: A total of 20 594 COVID-19 cases were notified; 2992 people (14.5%) were hospitalised with COVID-19. The incidence of hospitalisation within 89 days of onset of COVID-19 was higher than during the baseline period for several conditions, including myocarditis and pericarditis (IRR, 14.8; 95% CI, 3.2-68.3), thrombocytopenia (IRR, 7.4; 95% CI, 4.4-12.5), pulmonary embolism (IRR, 6.4; 95% CI, 3.6-11.4), acute myocardial infarction (IRR, 3.9; 95% CI, 2.6-5.8), and cerebral infarction (IRR, 2.3; 95% CI, 1.4-3.9). CONCLUSION: SARS-CoV-2 infection is associated with higher incidence of hospitalisation with several respiratory and non-respiratory conditions. Our findings reinforce the value of COVID-19 mitigation measures such as vaccination, and awareness of these associations should assist the clinical management of people with histories of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

16. Parallel Architecture, Parallel Acquisition Cross-Linguistic Evidence from Nominal and Verbal Domains

Abstract

This dissertation explores parallels between Complementizer Phrase (CP) and Determiner Phrase (DP) semantics, syntax, and morphology--including similarities in case-assignment, subject-verb and possessor-possessum agreement, subject and possessor semantics, and overall syntactic structure--in first language acquisition. Applying theoretical research into CP-DP parallels to child language acquisition, it asks two questions: 1) is there a relationship between the acquisition of case assignment and agreement within the CP and the DP? and 2) does the appearance of a particular feature or structural position in the CP predict its appearance in the DP? Child language acquisition research has led to different conclusions regarding both the type of representations in child grammar and the nature of their grammatical development. Assuming a feature-based grammatical architecture without pre-defined functional categories, the dissertation evaluates these different approaches to whether and how the grammar changes. The dissertation describes the relevant morphosyntax of Estonian, Hungarian, and English, highlighting the DP-CP parallels and cross-linguistic similarities. Longitudinal data from three children for each language were analyzed, with attention paid to features shared between nominal and verbal domains or indicative of syntactic structure. Results relating to both the main research questions and grammatical development of each child were compared across the three languages. The study found that for Estonian, CPs and DPs did develop in parallel, with similar syntactic pairs being acquired simultaneously. Case, agreement, and person/number features associated with CP preceded DP counterparts. Hungarian was similar: syntactic development occurred in parallel, though morphological aspects, including possessor agreement, were acquired first in verbal environments. English results differed, with syntactic development again parallel, though case acquisition occurred simultaneously and morphology consistently preferred nominal realization. The results indicate a parallel and steady syntactic development, contrasted with morphological development influenced by frequency. Additional analysis showed that fewer features represented by a form led to earlier acquisition, with bound functional morphemes preceding free ones. Overall, this supports a weakly continuous view of grammatical development, with a steadily growing linguistic capacity limited by the need to learn particular linguistic features. Abstract

Despite notable scientific and medical advances, broader political, socioeconomic and behavioural factors continue to undercut the response to the COVID-19 pandemic . Here we convened, as part of this Delphi study, a diverse, multidisciplinary panel of 386 academic, health, non-governmental organization, government and other experts in COVID-19 response from 112 countries and territories to recommend specific actions to end this persistent global threat to public health. The panel developed a set of 41 consensus statements and 57 recommendations to governments, health systems, industry and other key stakeholders across six domains: communication; health systems; vaccination; prevention; treatment and care; and inequities. In the wake of nearly three years of fragmented global and national responses, it is instructive to note that three of the highest-ranked recommendations call for the adoption of whole-of-society and whole-of-government approaches , while maintaining proven prevention measures using a vaccines-plus approach that employs a range of public health and financial support measures to complement vaccination. Other recommendations with at least 99% combined agreement advise governments and other stakeholders to improve communication, rebuild public trust and engage communities in the management of pandemic responses. The findings of the study, which have been further endorsed by 184 organizations globally, include points of unanimous agreement, as well as six recommendations with >5% disagreement, that provide health and social policy actions to address inadequacies in the pandemic response and help to bring this public health threat to an end.

31. Public Library Planning: Case Studies for Management. The Greenwood Library Management Collection.

Abstract

This book is the result of a set of case studies that were performed in four American public libraries between 1989 and 1992. The goal of the research was to describe the effect that planning has had in a representative set of libraries, focusing planning as a social phenomenon. The city, county, federated, and suburban library are examined. Discussion includes motivations for planning, the planning process, the planning document, planning as a social process, the elements of successful planning, risks and benefits, and the effects of systematic planning on the organization. Eleven tables provide information on planning documents, a comparison of the four libraries' long-range plans, length of plan compared to staff size, participation and ideal involvement in planning activities, methods for communicating with managers and learning about other departments, and perceived drawbacks and benefits of long-range planning. Abstract

The 12 papers in this volume explore the development of electronic texts in the humanities and describe the possible roles for libraries as electronic books take the place of printed ones. The diverse perspectives of librarians, publishers, system administrators, scholars, readers, and writers are brought into conjunction, and a number of significant themes emerge.
