In North Sumatera, captive Sumatran elephants are maintained in several conservation units, 2 of them were Aek Nauli Elephant Conservation Camp (ANECC) and Tangkahan Conservation Response Unit (CRU). Although elephant conservation sites have implemented a management plan to address elephant health and welfare issues, Sumatran elephants in captivity are still susceptible to some of the health issues such as breeding problems, stress, and poor health. Therefore, the health examination is necessary to be conducted regularly as an effort to save the Sumatran elephant which has been categorized as one of the critically endangered animals. This study was carried out in Aek Nauli and Tangkahan which covered the assessment of elephant reproduction status using ultrasonography, cortisol analysis using ELISA, and parasite identification using sedimentation, floatation and Parfit and Banks methods. The ultrasonography examination was carried out on each conservation site, while the collected blood and feces were transferred to Veterinary Medicine Faculty Universitas Syiah Kuala for cortisol and parasite analysis, respectively. The data on reproductive status, cortisol level, and gastrointestinal parasite were analyzed descriptively. The sonography result showed that 3 Sumatran elephants in ANECC had uterine cysts, while one pregnant elephant and two elephants with involution uteri were recorded in CRU Tangkahan. Worm eggs from genus trematode and nematode were found during feces examination in ANECC, but the only nematode was observed in Tangkahan. Elephant maintained in Tangkahan had a higher cortisol level (82.11±61.49 ng/ml) compared to those maintained in ANECC (16.87±3.88 ng/ml). As a conclusion, the reproduction status, cortisol level, and parasite gastrointestinal observed in Sumatran elephant maintained in 2 conservation sites (ANECC and CRU Tangkahan) were different, probably due to different stress factor and management implemented on.

Malacca is one of traditional medicine that possesses a potent antimicrobial activity. This study aims to determine the inhibitory activity of Malacca leaf extract on the growth of Salmonella sp in vitro. The bacteria was obtained from Microbiology Laboratory of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Universitas Syiah Kuala. The study was conducted using n-hexane extract, ethyl acetate extract and ethanol of malacca leaves with dilution concentrations of 5%, 25%, and 50%.The inhibitory property of malacca leaf was tested using Kirby-Bauer method. Data were analyzed descriptively. The results of this study indicate that n-hexane extract, ethyl acetate extract and ethanol extract of malacca leaves can inhibit the growth of Salmonella sp. The n-hexane extract of malacca leaves showed a greater inhibition than the ethyl acetate and ethanol extract of malacca leaves. n-hexane extract with a concentration of 5%, 25%, and 50% showed average diameter inhibition of 1.35 mm (weak), 4.97 mm (moderate), and 12.87 mm (strong), respectively ethyl acetate extract with a concentration of 5%, 25%, and 50% showed average diameter inhibition of 2.00 mm (weak), 5.72 mm (moderate), and 7.58 mm (moderate), whereas in ethanol extract were 0.47 mm (weak), 2.58 mm (weak), and 4.35 mm (weak), repectively. The clear zone areas in negative and positive control were 0.00 mm 20.00 mm, respectively. Malacca leaf extract possess inhibitory property against the growth of the Salmonella sp.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the ethanol extract of malacca leaves (Phyllanthus emblica) to reduce carrageenan-induced edema in mice. This study used 25 mice which were divided into 5 groups with 5 mice per group. All the mice were induced inflammation using carrageenan at a dose of 1%. Mice in group 1 were not given piroxicam and malacca leaves extract. Mice in group 2 were treated with 20 mg of piroxicam suspension. Mice in groups 3, 4, and 5 were given ethanol extract of malacca leaves with doses of 100 mg/kg bb, 200 mg/kg bb, and 300 mg/kg bb, respectively. Edema volume measurements were performed on 5th day by collecting exudates using a syringe. Data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and continued with the Duncan test. The result showed that the average of edema volume in the negative control group was 0.09 ± 0.02 mL, while in the positive control group was 0.05 ± 0.03 mL. The average edema volume in groups 3, 4, dan 5 were 0.07 ± 0.01 mL, 0.06 ± 0.02 mL dan 0.07 ± 0.01 mL, respectively. It is concluded that the ethanol extract of malacca leaves (Phyllanthus emblica) can reduce the carrageenan-induced edema in male mice.

Accurate determination of estrus status in an animal based on an appropriate estrus detection method can guarantee the cows' pregnancy after mating. This study aims to determine the estrus status of Aceh cows using the van Eerdenburg estrus behavior scoring method. This study was conducted from 22 January to 12 February 2021, at the Technical Implementation Unit for Animals of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Universitas Syiah Kuala, Banda Aceh, Indonesia. The sample used was eleven Aceh cows aged 4-6 years old. Parameters observed were the number of cows exhibiting signs of estrus using the estrus behavior scoring method. The accuracy of estrus detection was confirmed by palpation per rectum to detect the presence of uterine tone. By observing signs of estrus using the method studied, 90.9% (10/11) of the cows were determined to be in estrus. Confirmation by the presence of uterine tone showed a 100% accuracy rate. The most effective sign of estrus was the passivity of the cow when being ridden by another cow or bull. This study concluded that estrus status in local cows could be determined using the estrus behavior scoring of the van Eerdenburg method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of spawnprim hormone induction with different doses on gonadal maturity of tinfoil barb fish broodstock (Barbonymus schwanenfeldii). A completely randomized design (CRD) was used in this study with 4 treatments and 3 replications. Fish broodstock in group A (control) was not given any treatment, while fish broodstocks in groups B, C, and D were injected with spawnprim hormone at doses of 0.3 ml/kg body weight, 0.6 ml/kg body weight, and 0.9 ml/kg body weight, respectively. The measured parameters were gonad maturity level, broodstock weight gain, egg diameter, and fecundity. Data were analyzed using one way analysis of variance (ANOVA). The result showed that the gonad maturity level (GML) in groups B, C, and D (GML III and IV) was better than group A (GML I). Statistical analysis showed that the induction of spawnprim hormone on tinfoil barb broodstocks significantly affect (P<0.05) broodstock weight gain, egg diameter, and fecundity. The optimal dose of spawnprim hormone for tinfoil barb was 0.6 ml/kg body weight, with the average broodstock weight gain, egg diameter, and fecundity were 0.011 kg, 1.55 mm, and 102.15 eggs, respectively. The induction of spawnprim hormone has a positive effect on gonad maturation of tinfoil barb fish (B. schwanenfeldii), with the optimum dose is 0.6 ml/kg fish. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
