Urban environments increasingly move to the fore of climate and air quality research due to their central role in the population’s health and well-being. Tools to model the local environmental conditions, urban morphology and interaction with the atmospheric boundary layer play an important role for sustainable urban planning and policy-making. uDALES is a high-resolution, building-resolving large-eddy simulation code for urban microclimate and air quality. uDALES solves a surface energy balance for each urban facet and models multi-refection shortwave radiation, longwave radiation, heat storage and conductance, as well as turbulent latent and sensible heat fluxes. Vegetated surfaces and their effect on outdoor temperatures and energy demand can be studied. Furthermore a scheme to simulate emissions and transport of aerosols and some reactive gas species is present. The energy balance has been tested against idealized cases and the particle dispersion against field measurements, yielding satisfying results. uDALES can be used to study the effect of specific new constructions and building measures on the local micro-climate; or to gain new insight about the general effect of urban morphology on local climate, ventilation and dispersion. uDALES is available online under GNU General Public License and remains under maintenance and development.

During the germination process, seeds can release various types of peptides due to the degradation of storage proteins. Some of these peptides can have biological activity (bioactive peptides). The objective of this study was to determine the ACE inhibitory activity of germinated pigeon pea peptide extract at various germination times and to carry out the fractionation to the extract to get the most active peptide fraction. The results showed that the highest activity of peptide extract was found on the 4th-day germination of pigeon pea with an IC50 value of 63.46 μg/mL. The peptide extract was further fractionated by centrifugal ultrafiltration method and it was found that the peptide fraction < 3 kDa had the highest ACE inhibitory activity with an IC50 value of 57.79 μg/mL. The result of identification with the LCMS method to the fraction was able to detect 4 types of the peptide with a molecular weight of 230.304, 294.303, 441.436, and 570.591 Da. These results suggested that the peptide fraction of germinated pigeon pea has the potency as an ACE inhibitory nutraceutical.

This guide presents an innovative framework to systematically unlock the multiple benefits of city natural infrastructure; thus producing resilient, sustainable and cost-effective solutions. The framework is applicable at a building, neighbourhood and city-scale and is suitable both for new and retrofit developments.

Ledok is a traditional food from Nusa Penida, Bali, in form of non-rice porridge. The main ingredients of Ledok were corn and cassava, and other ingredients such as peanut, red bean and spinach. The moisture sorption isotherm of instant Ledok with additional of frigate mackerel was observed in this study. The objectives of this study were to observe the moisture sorption isotherm properties of instant Ledok, and predict the shelf life of instant Ledok that packed in aluminum foil and HDPE (high density polyethylene) packaging material. Moisture sorption isotherms of instant Ledok were determined using the standard gravimetric static method over a range of relative humidity from 30% to 90%. The experimental sorption curves were fitted by GAB (Guggenheim-Anderson-de Boer) equation. The shelf life was determined using the ASLT (accelerated shelf life testing) method and calculated using Labuza model. The sorption isotherm curve of instant Ledok was found to be sigmoid shape of type II isotherm with monolayer (Mo) value of 0.0404 g H2O/100 g dry solid, K value of 0.855, and C value of 92.268. The predicted shelf life of instant Ledok was 29.8 months if packed in aluminum foil, and 6.0 months if packed in HDPE packaging materials.ABSTRAKLedok adalah salah satu makanan tradisional dari Nusa Penida Bali, yang berbentuk seperti bubur. Bahan baku utama dari ledok ini adalah jagung dan singkong atau ubi jalar, dan bahan lain yang ditambahkan adalah kacang tanah, kacang merah, dan daun bayam. Pada studi ini dipelajari tentang karakteristik sorpsi-isoterm dari ledok instan yang diberi tambahan ikan tongkol. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui karakteristik isotermis sorpsi air ledok instan yang diberi tambahan ikan tongkol, dan untuk menentukan umur simpan (shelf life) dari ledok instan tersebut yang dikemas dengan aluminium foil dan plastik HDPE (high sensity polyethylene). Isotermis sorpsi air ledok instan ditentukan dengan menggunakan metode gravimetri standar, dan karakteristiknya dianalisis menggunakan metode GAB (Guggenheim, Anderson, dan de Boer). Umur simpannya ditentukan menggunakan metode ASLT (accelerated shelf life testing) dan dihitung menggunakan Model Labuza dengan pendekatan kadar air kritis. Hasil pengujian diperoleh bahwa isotermis sorpsi air ledok instan mempunyai bentuk sigmoid tipe II dengan nilai kadar air monolayernya (Mo) sebesar 0.0404 g H2O/100 g bahan kering, nilai konstanta K sebesar 0.855, dan nilai konstanta C sebesar 92.268. Umur simpan ledok instan yang dikemas aluminium foil adalah 29,8 bulan, sedangkan yang dikemas dengan plastik HDPE mempunyai umur simpan 6,0 bulan.

Geomagnetic excursions, i.e. short periods in time with much weaker geomagnetic fields and substantial changes in the position of the geomagnetic pole, occurred repeatedly in the Earth's history, e.g. the Laschamp event about 41 kyr ago. Although the next such excursion is certain to come, little is known about the timing and possible consequences for the state of the atmosphere and the ecosystems. Here we use the global chemistry climate model SOCOL-MPIOM to simulate the effects of geomagnetic excursions on atmospheric ionization, chemistry and dynamics. Our simulations show significantly increased concentrations of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the entire stratosphere, especially over Antarctica (+15%), due to enhanced ionization by galactic cosmic rays. Hydrogen oxides (HOx) are also produced in greater amounts (up to +40%) in the tropical and subtropical lower stratosphere, while their destruction by reactions with enhanced NOx prevails over the poles and in high altitudes (by -5%). Stratospheric ozone concentrations decrease globally above 20 km by 1-2% and at the northern hemispheric tropopause by up to 5% owing to the accelerated NOx-induced destruction. A 5% increase is found in the southern lower stratosphere and troposphere. In response to these changes in ozone and the concomitant changes in atmospheric heating rates, the Arctic vortex intensifies in boreal winter, while the Antarctic vortex weakens in austral winter and spring. Surface wind anomalies show significant intensification of the southern westerlies at their poleward edge during austral winter and a pronounced northward shift in spring. Major impacts on the global climate seem unlikely.
