Abstract

An experimental program is currently underway at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) to compress deuterium and tritium (DT) fuel to densities and temperatures sufficient to achieve fusion and energy gain. The primary approach being investigated is indirect drive inertial confinement fusion (ICF), where a high-Z radiation cavity (a hohlraum) is heated by lasers, converting the incident energy into x-ray radiation which in turn drives the DT fuel filled capsule causing it to implode. Previous experiments reported DT fuel gain exceeding unity [O.A. Hurricane et al., Nature 506, 343 (2014)] and then exceeding the kinetic energy of the imploding fuel [S. Le Pape et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 245003 (2018)]. We report on recent experiments that have achieved record fusion neutron yields on NIF, greater than 100 kJ with momentary fusion powers exceeding 1PW, and have for the first time entered the burning plasma regime where fusion alpha-heating of the fuel exceeds the energy delivered to the fuel via compression. This was accomplished by increasing the size of the high-density carbon (HDC) capsule, increasing energy coupling, while controlling symmetry and implosion design parameters. Two tactics were successful in controlling the radiation flux symmetry and therefore the implosion symmetry: transferring energy between laser cones via plasma waves, and changing the shape of the hohlraum. In conducting these experiments, we controlled for known sources of degradation. Herein we show how these experiments were performed to produce record performance, and demonstrate the data fidelity leading us to conclude that these shots have entered the burning plasma regime.

4. Social Cultural Factors Influencing Appointment of Headteachers in Primary Schools in Eldoret East Sub-County, Kenya

Abstract

Headteachers' position is at the critical point of which all the mechanism of Education system: planning, delivery and management rest. The purpose of the study was to investigate social cultural factors influencing appointment of headteachers in primary schools in Eldoret East Sub-County, Uasin Gishu County. The target population comprised of 275 respondents who were: head teachers, deputy head teachers, members of appointment committee in the Sub-County Education office noted as the DEO, DQASO, QASOS, AEOS, DSO, DHRO and KNUT Executive official. The study used questionnaires and interview schedules as tools of data collection. Findings of the research showed that males dominate headship positions in primary schools in the sub county where even the constitutional threshold of 30% has not been attained. It was found out that female leadership is devalued the study area. Respondents indicated that stereotypes associated with social cultural factors had significant influence on the appointment of heads of schools in Eldoret East Sub County. Women teachers not given equal chances to apply for headship position due to cultural beliefs that the society has towards them. There is need for selection panels not to focus on socio-cultural issues that may affect women ascendancy to school leadership. The selection panels need to forego socio-cultural factors that may affect women teachers' promotion to school headship.

Abstract

The sensitivity of inertial confinement fusion implosions of the type performed on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) to low-mode flux asymmetries has been investigated numerically. It is shown that large-amplitude, low-order mode shapes (Legendre polynomial P4), resulting from associated low order flux asymmetries, cause spatial variations in capsule and fuel momentum that prevent the DT ice layer from being decelerated uniformly by the hot spot pressure. This reduces the transfer of kinetic to internal energy of the central hot spot, thus reducing neutron yield. Furthermore, synthetic gated x-ray images of the hot spot self-emission indicate that P4 shapes may be unquantifiable for DT layered capsules. Instead the positive P4 asymmetry aliases itself as an oblate P4 in the x-ray self emission images. Correction of this apparent P2 distortion can further distort the implosion while creating a round x-ray image. Long wavelength asymmetries may be playing a significant role in the observed yield reduction of NIF DT implosions relative to detailed post-shot 2D simulations., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

Abstract

Skolomystax collendus (Harker, 1957) n.comb. Discussion. We have found no specimens that match the description of the male subimago or nymph described by Harker (1957), and we have been unable to locate the type material. Harker (1957) stated type material was deposited in the British Museum, but it has no record of the types and this material was not deposited in the Australian Museum where Harker placed material from earlier papers. Therefore, we consider this species of uncertain status until collections are made at the type locality. The hindwing illustrated by Harker (1957: 75, fig. 59) shows three unforked longitudinal veins with several crossveins between them and a sharply pointed costal projection that differentiates it from the other adults we have seen. The nymphal description is not sufficiently detailed to be of diagnostic value. It is possible S. collendus is conspecific with S. dyarrbi, as suggested by Webb and Suter (2011), because both are known from the area around Sydney, NSW. Consistent with this is the presence of teeth on the inner margin of the outer incisors of the left mandible and a rugose base of the inner incisors, as illustrated by Harker (1957: 75). In addition, S. dyarrbi has a short second segment of the maxillary palp and the basal segment is nearly as long as the galealacinia, as noted by Harker (1957: 76) for S. collendus. However, the illustration of the left mandible by Harker (1957) shows distinct teeth on the outer margin of the outer incisor, a characteristic we have not observed in any specimens of Skolomystax.

36. A new genus and species of Calocidae (Trichoptera: Insecta) from south eastern Australia

Abstract

MDFRC item.A new genus and species of Calocidae (Trichoptera:Insecta) from south eastern Australia. Latarima gen. nov. (Trichoptera: Calocidae) is described from southeastern Australia based on the male adult, male pupa, and larva. Two species are included, L. explicatala sp nov. and L. furcilla (Neboiss, 1984a) comb. nov. Males of Latarima gen. nov. are distinct from other Calocidae genera in that segment X of the genitalia is widely incised, forming two elongate sections on the segment. Larvae are distinguished by a reticulate texture of the head capsule and a frontoclypeus that widens suddenly towards the anterior and possesses many setae in the antero-lateral corners. Larvae were previously placed in the interim genus Cal/Hel Genus G by Jackson (1998). This work increases the number of Calocidae genera to 7.

Murray-Darling Freshwater Research CentreMDFRC item.Although drought and drying of waters occur globally, the effect of drying on sediment microbial communities underpinning aquatic biogeochemical processes is poorly understood. We used the molecular method of terminal-restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) to assess changes in the microbial community structure of sediments undergoing different levels of inundation and drying within a reservoir during drawdown in a drought. Sediments with three hydrological conditions were investigated: dry sediments (no overlying water), littoral sediments (covered with 1–2 mm water) and inundated sediments (covered with >1 m water). Sampling was done in winter 2006 (August) and summer 2007 (January) in Lake Hume, Australia. The microbial communities differed significantly between the different levels of inundation at each sampling time. Community structure also changed significantly within each site between winter 2006 and summer 2007, possibly influenced by the change of season or protracted drying. Sites that were 'littoral' in winter 2006 became 'dry' in summer 2007, and became more similar to communities that were 'dry' at both sampling times. This suggested that the hydrological history of specific sites did not heavily influence the response of microbial communities to severe drying, and all communities undergoing 'dry' conditions within the summer 2007 sampling responded similarly.
