The effect of ionospheric delay on the ground-based augmentation system under normal conditions can be mitigated by determining the value of the nominal ionospheric gradient (σvig). The nominal ionospheric gradient is generally obtained from Continuously Operating Reference Stations data by using the spatial single-difference method (mixed-pair, station-pair, or satellite-pair) or the temporal single-difference method (time-step). The time-step method uses only a single receiver, but it still contains ionospheric temporal variations. We introduce a corrected time-step method using a fixed-ionospheric pierce point from the geostationary equatorial orbit satellite and test it through simulations based on the global ionospheric model. We also investigate the effect of satellite paths on the corrected time-step method in the region of the equator, which tends to be in a more north–south direction and to have less coverage for the east–west ionospheric gradient. This study also addresses the limitations of temporal variation correction coverage and recommends using only the correction from self-observations. All processes are developed under simulations because observational data are still difficult to obtain. Our findings demonstrate that the corrected time-step method yields σvig values consistent with other approaches.

Background: Breast reconstruction is crucial for patients who have undergone mastectomy for breast cancer. Our bioabsorbable implants comprising an outer poly-l-lactic acid mesh and an inner component filled with collagen sponge promote and retain adipogenesis in vivo without the addition of exogenous cells or growth factors. In this study, we evaluated adipogenesis over time histologically and at the gene expression level using this implant in a rodent model. Methods: The implants were inserted in the inguinal and dorsal regions of the animals. At 1, 3, 6, and 12 months post-operation, the weight, volume, and histological assessment of all newly formed tissue were performed. We analyzed the formation of new adipose tissue using multiphoton microscopy and RNA sequencing. Results: Both in the inguinal and dorsal regions, adipose tissue began to form 1 month post-operation in the peripheral area. Angiogenesis into implants was observed until 3 months. At 6 months, microvessels matured and the amount of newly generated adipose tissue peaked and was uniformly distributed inside implants. The amount of newly generated adipose tissue decreased from 6 to 12 months but at 12 months, adipose tissue was equivalent to the native tissue histologically and in terms of gene expression. Conclusions: Our bioabsorbable implants could induce normal adipogenesis into the implants after subcutaneous implantation. Our implants can serve as a novel and safe material for breast reconstruction without requiring exogenous cells or growth factors.

Background: Symptomatic distal interphalangeal joint osteoarthritis is a common joint disease that causes hand disability and reduces quality of life. There are few conservative treatment options for this condition. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of traction treatment on symptomatic distal interphalangeal joint osteoarthritis. Methods: This prospective, longitudinal study involved multiple time-series observations and within-subject controls. The most painful distal interphalangeal joints in patients with hand osteoarthritis were treated by daily, 15-min joint traction at home using a finger trap orthosis. The corresponding contralateral digits were used as within-subject controls. The primary outcome measure was two-point pinch strength, and the secondary outcome measures were radiographic findings and treatment adherence. Longitudinal and pairwise comparison analyses of the treated and control digits examined improvements in two-point pinch strength at months 1, 3, and 6 from baseline. The durability of treatment effects after treatment discontinuation was investigated at month 12. Results: Eighteen treated digits and 18 corresponding control digits were eligible for analysis. There was a significant increase in two-point pinch strength after 1-month traction, and this increase was maintained until month 6 despite the absence of radiographic changes. Compared to controls, significant improvement in two-point pinch strength relative to baseline was seen at every observation time point, with a moderate to large effect size. There was no time–treatment interaction. Treatment adherence was high. At months 3 and 6, around 60–80 % of digits were voluntarily treated. Pinch strength was comparable between months 6 and 12, with greater improvement than in the control group. Conclusion: Joint traction treatment can improve pinch strength in symptomatic distal interphalangeal joint osteoarthritis. Larger, randomized studies on traction treatment and the effect on hand function are warranted.

Epidermolysis bullosa is a group of inherited skin fragility disorders with blister formation in the basement membrane zone. Chronic scarring after repeated blistering of the hands causes narrowing of the first web, flexion contractures of the digits, and pseudosyndactyly. Junctional epidermolysis bullosa is a type of epidermolysis bullosa that is characterized by blister formation in the lamina lucida. This condition is associated with survival into adulthood. In adult survivors, hand function might be required in order to participate in normal social activities. However, there is a lack of literature on the management of hand surgery for adult patients with junctional epidermolysis bullosa. We herein describe an adult patient with junctional epidermolysis bullosa who had pseudosyndactyly and flexion contractures in both hands. Five surgeries were performed. Contractures were released and reconstructed using split- or full-thickness skin grafts. Delayed wound healing was always observed due to epidermal necrosis in the graft. After epithelialization, a satisfactory functional outcome was obtained.

Abstract The explosive eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano on 15 January 2022 generated atmospheric waves traveling around the Earth, which caused ionospheric disturbances on various spatio-temporal scales. A HF Doppler sounding system in Japan detected characteristic ionospheric disturbances showing periodic oscillations in the Doppler frequency with a period of ~ 4 min. In this study, such periodic oscillations were examined by comparing Doppler frequency data with Total Electron Content data obtained by Global Navigation Satellite System. The observed periodic oscillations in the Doppler frequency were characterized by a sawtooth or S-letter shaped variation, implying the passage of the traveling ionospheric disturbances through the reflection points of the HF Doppler sounding system. It was also found that the periodic oscillations occurred prior to the arrival of the tropospheric Lamb wave excited by the Tonga eruption. From the total electron content data, the traveling ionospheric disturbances causing the periodic oscillations were excited by the tropospheric Lamb waves at the conjugate point in the southern hemisphere, namely, the electric field perturbations due to the Lamb waves in the southern hemisphere mapped onto the sensing area of the HF Doppler sounding system in the northern hemisphere along the magnetic field lines. The periodic oscillations were observed only in the path between Chofu transmitter and Sarobetsu receiver, whose the radio propagation path is almost aligned in the north–south direction. This suggests that the traveling ionospheric disturbance has a structure elongating in the meridional direction. The variation in the Doppler frequency was reproduced by using a simple model of the propagation of the traveling ionospheric disturbances and the resultant motion of the reflection point. As a result, the vertical motion of the reflection point associated with the periodic oscillations was estimated to be about 1 km. It is known that 4-min period variations are sometimes observed in association with earthquakes, which is due to resonances of acoustic mode waves propagating between the ground and the lower ionosphere. Therefore, a similar resonance structure in the southern hemisphere is a plausible source of the traveling ionospheric disturbances detected in the northern hemisphere. Graphical Abstract

Abstract It has long been known that field-aligned irregularities within equatorial plasma bubbles (EPBs) can cause long-range propagation of radio waves in the VHF frequencies such as those used for TV broadcasting through the so-called forward scattering process. However, no attempt has been made to use such anomalous propagations of VHF radio waves for wide-area monitoring of EPBs. In this study, we investigated the feasibility of monitoring of EPBs using VHF radio waves used for aeronautical navigation systems such as VHF Omnidirectional radio Range (VOR). There are 370 VOR stations in the Eastern and Southeastern Asian region that can be potentially used as Tx stations for the observations of anomalous propagation. We have examined the forward scattering conditions of VHF waves using the magnetic field model and confirmed that it is possible to observe the EPB-related anomalous propagation if we set up Rx stations in Okinawa (Japan), Taiwan, and Thailand. During test observations conducted in Okinawa since 2021, no signal has been received that was clearly caused by anomalous propagation due to EPBs. This is simply because EPBs have not developed to high latitudes during the observation period due to the low solar activity. In March 2023, however, possible indications of EPB-related scattering were detected in Okinawa which implies the feasibility of observing EPBs with the current observation system. We plan to conduct pilot observations in Taiwan and Thailand in future to further evaluate the feasibility of this monitoring technique. Graphical Abstract

Perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) polymers are used as electrolyte membranes in polymer electrolyte fuel cells. To investigate the effect on proton conductivity through structural orientation control, we added 1,2,4-triazole to PFSA films during casting to impart anisotropy to the ion-cluster structure of the films. The proton conductivities of the films were found to be high in the film-surface direction and low in the film-thickness direction. Structural analysis using small-angle X-ray scattering suggested that the anisotropy in proton conductivity was due to anisotropy in the ion-cluster structure, which in turn was attributed to the formation of a phase-separated structure via strong bonding between sulfonic acid groups and 1,2,4-triazole during cast film formation and the surface segregation of fluorine. We expect the findings of this study to aid in the fabrication of PFSA films with controlled ion clusters.

Abstract This study estimates the scale sizes of the plasma density irregularities and the longitudinal width associated with equatorial plasma bubbles (EPBs) in equatorial and low-latitude regions. By analyzing amplitude scintillation S4 indices and total electron content (TEC) measured from low earth orbit (LEO) satellite’s beacon signals with 400 MHz and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) L1/E1 signals with 1575.42 MHz, recorded by receivers at the KMITL station in Bangkok, Thailand (geographic; 13.73° N, 100.77°E, magnetic: 7.26°N), we investigate the characteristics of these irregularities. We collected data of 154 LEO satellite pass events during nighttime on 21 disturbed days in four equinoctial months in 2021. Based on the presence or absence of the scintillation effects on GNSS and LEO beacon signals, the events are categorized into four classes to estimate the scale size of the plasma density irregularities. The analysis suggests that events with both GNSS and LEO scintillations, as well as events with GNSS scintillation alone, occur predominantly before midnight assuming the presence of the small-scale size of the irregularities within EPB. However, events with only LEO scintillation occur throughout the whole night and some events are observed before the events with both GNSS and LEO scintillations. Post-sunset LEO scintillation alone may be attributed to the onset of EPBs developing at low altitude, while post-midnight LEO scintillation events near the magnetic equator, observed during periods of low GNSS Rate of TEC Index (ROTI) values, are associated with bottom-side ionospheric irregularities but are not linked with EPB. The findings are consistent with previous researches on the generation and decay of electron density irregularities within plasma bubbles. However, this study provides new insights by using specific data sets and analysis techniques, offering a more comprehensive understanding of the association of LEO scintillations with bottom-side ionospheric irregularities near the magnetic equator, not observed in the ROTI map. Abstract Premise Previously we described methods for generating three‐dimensional (3D) virtual reconstructions of plant tissues from transverse thin sections. Here, we report the applicability of longitudinal sections and improved image‐processing steps that are simpler to perform and utilize free applications. Methods In order to obtain improved digital images and a virtual 3D object (cuboid), GIMP 2.10 and ImageJ 2.3.0 running on a laptop computer were used. Sectional views of the cuboid and 3D visualization were realized with use of the plug‐ins “Volume Viewer” and “3D Viewer” in ImageJ. Results A 3D object was constructed and sectional views along several cutting planes were generated. The 3D object consisted of selected tissues inside the cuboid that were extracted and visualized from the original section data, and an animated video of the 3D construct was also produced. Discussion Virtual cuboids can be constructed by stacking longitudinal images along the transverse depth direction or stacking transverse images vertically along the organ axis, with both generating similar 3D objects. Which to use depends on the purpose of the investigation: if the vertical cell structures need close examination, the former method may be better, but for more general spatial evaluations or for evaluation of organs over longer tissue distances than can be accommodated with longitudinal sectioning, the latter method should be chosen.

Introduction: Autologous cultured epidermis (CE) is an effective approach for overcoming the deficiency of donor sites to treat extensive burns. However, the production of autologous CE takes 3–4 weeks, which prevents its use during the life-threatening period of severe burns. In contrast, allogeneic CE can be prepared in advance and used as a wound dressing, releasing several growth factors stimulating the activity of recipient cells at the application site. Dried CE is prepared by drying CEs under controlled temperature and humidity conditions until all the water is completely removed and no viable cells are present. Dried CE accelerates wound healing in a murine skin defect model and is potentially a new therapeutic strategy. However, the dried CE safety and efficacy have not yet been studied in large animal models. Therefore, we studied the safety and efficacy of human-dried CE in wound healing using a miniature swine model. Methods: Human CE was manufactured using Green's method from donor keratinocytes. Three types of CEs (Fresh, Cryopreserved, and Dried) were prepared, and the ability of each CE to promote keratinocyte proliferation was confirmed in vitro. Extracts of the three CEs were added to keratinocytes seeded in 12-well plates, and cell proliferation was evaluated using the WST-8 assay for 7 days. Next, we prepared a partial-thickness skin defect on the back of a miniature swine and applied three types of human CE to evaluate wound healing promotion. On days 4 and 7, the specimens were harvested for hematoxylin-eosin, AZAN, and anti-CD31 staining to assess epithelialization, granulation tissue, and capillary formation. Serial sectioning and 3D image reconstruction methods were applied to elucidate the structures of the apices of root vascular cylinders (VCs) in taxa of the Poaceae: Zea mays “Honey Bantam”, Z. mays ssp. mexicana, Hordeum vulgare and Oryza sativa. The primary and nodal roots were investigated. Observations were performed using high-quality sectioning and 3D image-processing techniques improved and developed by the authors. We found that a quiescent uniseriate plerome was located at the most distal part of each VC. Vascular initials were located immediately basipetally to the plerome as a specific uniseriate layer that could be classified into central and peripheral initials that produced all the cells in the VC. No supplying of cells from the plerome to the vascular initials was observed. Numerical analysis revealed a “boundary point” along the root axis where the rate of increase of the vascular cell number markedly declined, and the VC diameter, number of vascular cells, and number of late-maturing metaxylem vessels (LMXs) at that point showed a similar relationship among the taxa and the types of roots examined (primary vs. nodal). The plerome and vascular initials layer can be considered independent after seed germination in these taxa. A boundary point at which procambial cell proliferation sharply declined was identified. The diameters of the VCs, number of LMXs, and number of vascular cells at the boundary point were found to be strongly related to each other.

Abstract Bovine leukemia virus (BLV) infects cattle, integrates into host DNA as a provirus, and induces malignant B-cell lymphoma. Previous studies have addressed the impact of proviral integration of BLV on BLV-induced leukemogenesis. However, no studies have monitored sequential changes in integration sites in which naturally infected BLV individuals progress from the premalignant stage to the terminal disease. Here, we collected blood samples from a single, naturally infected Holstein cow at three disease progression stages (Stage I: polyclonal stage, Stage II: polyclonal toward oligoclonal stage, Stage III: oligoclonal stage) and successfully visualized the kinetics of clonal expansion of cells carrying BLV integration sites using our BLV proviral DNA-capture sequencing method. Although 24 integration sites were detected in Stages I and II, 92% of these sites experienced massive depletion in Stage III. Of these sites, 46%, 37%, and 17% were located within introns of Refseq genes, intergenic regions, and repetitive sequences, respectively. At Stage III cattle with lymphoma, only two integration sites were generated de novo in the intergenic region of Chr1, and the intron of the CHEK2 gene on Chr17 was significantly increased. Our results are the first to demonstrate clonal expansion after the massive depletion of cells carrying BLV integration sites in a naturally infected cow.

Abstract Ground-Based Augmentation System (GBAS) is a GNSS augmentation system that meets International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) requirements to support precision approach and landing. GBAS is based on local differential GNSS technique with reference stations located around an airport to provide necessary integrity and accuracy. The performance of the GBAS system can be affected by gradient in the ionospheric delay between aircraft and reference stations. A nominal ionospheric gradient, which is bounded by a conservative error bound, is represented by a parameter σ vig. The parameter σ vig is commonly determined using station pair to GNSS Continuous Operating Reference Station (CORS) data. The station-pair method is susceptible to doubling of the estimation error of receiver inter-frequency bias (IFB) and is not suitable with the CORS conditions in Indonesia. We propose a satellite-pair method that is found to be more suitable for the CORS network over Indonesia which is centered in Java and Sumatra islands. An overall value of σ vig (5.21 mm/km) was obtained using this method along with preliminary results of a comparison of σ vig from Java and Sumatra islands. Graphical Abstract

Abstract Background The potential risk and association of bovine leukemia virus (BLV) with human remains controversial as it has been reported to be both positive and negative in human breast cancer and blood samples. Therefore, establishing the presence of BLV in comprehensive human clinical samples in different geographical locations is essential. Result In this study, we examined the presence of BLV proviral DNA in human blood and breast cancer tissue specimens from Japan. PCR analysis of BLV provirus in 97 Japanese human blood samples and 23 breast cancer tissues showed negative result for all samples tested using long-fragment PCR and highly-sensitive short-fragment PCR amplification. No IgG and IgM antibodies were detected in any of the 97 human serum samples using BLV gp51 and p24 indirect ELISA test. Western blot analysis also showed negative result for IgG and IgM antibodies in all tested human serum samples. Conclusion Our results indicate that Japanese human specimens including 97 human blood, 23 breast cancer tissues, and 97 serum samples were negative for BLV.

Abstract Traveling ionospheric disturbances (TIDs) were observed over Japan by using Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver network data after the eruption of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai in Tonga on 15 January 2022. Two types of TIDs with different characteristics were observed as perturbation in the total electron content (TEC). The first one arrived at Japan which are located about 7800 km away from Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai about 3 h after the eruption. The amplitude was about ± 0.5 TECU. The wavefronts was in the NNE–SSW direction and propagated in the WNW direction (– 69 $$^\circ$$ ∘ counter-clockwise from the north) at 250 m s $$^{-1}$$ - 1 . The wavelength was estimated as 400 km. The second one arrived at Japan about 7 h after the eruption. The amplitude was about ± 1.0 TECU. The wavefronts was in the NE–SW direction and propagated in the NW direction (– 53 $$^\circ$$ ∘ counter-clockwise from the north) at 270 m s $$^{-1}$$ - 1 . The wavelength was longer than the first one and was estimated as 800 km. The first one were associated with ionospheric irregularities represented by the rate of TEC index (ROTI). In contrast, the second one did not have irregularities all over the TIDs, but in only a limited region. The arrival of the first TID was too early for the atmospheric acoustic waves to arrive, while the arrival of the second TIDs approximately coincided with the arrival of surface pressure enhancement. To understand the mechanisms of the TIDs, further studies with wide-area observations as well as numerical calculations are necessary. TIDs and ionospheric irregularities after volcanic eruption could be threats to GNSS-based systems especially for those which utilize carrier-phase measurements. Graphical Abstract

We report the case of a 71-year-old male with essential thrombosis who presented with ground-glass lung opacity with a mosaic pattern on computed tomography, which resolved spontaneously with hospitalization. This was confused with a case of hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP), which later turned out to be a drug-induced lung disease caused by surreptitiously administered minoxidil. This case emphasizes the importance of obtaining a correct medication history to make an accurate diagnosis, and this is the first report of minoxidil causing HP-like pulmonary illness.

Abstract Cosmic-ray exposure to flight crews and passengers, which is called aviation radiation exposure, is an important topic in radiological protection, particularly for solar energetic particles (SEP). We therefore assessed the risks associated with the countermeasure costs to reduce SEP doses and dose rates for eight flight routes during five ground level enhancements (GLE). A four-dimensional dose-rate database developed by the Warning System for Aviation Exposure to Solar Energetic Particles, WASAVIES, was employed in the SEP dose evaluation. As for the cost estimation, we considered two countermeasures; one is the cancellation of the flight, and the other is the reduction of flight altitudes. Then, we estimated the annual occurrence frequency of significant GLE events that would bring the maximum flight route dose and dose rate over 1.0 mSv and 80 μSv/h, respectively, based on past records of GLE as well as historically large events observed by the cosmogenic nuclide concentrations in tree rings and ice cores. Our calculations suggest that GLE events of a magnitude sufficient to exceed the above dose and dose rate thresholds, requiring a change in flight conditions, occur once every 47 and 17 years, respectively, and their conservatively-estimated annual risks associated with the countermeasure costs are up to around 1.5 thousand USD in the cases of daily-operated long-distance flights.

Abstract Although solar activity may significantly impact the global environment and socioeconomic systems, the mechanisms for solar eruptions and the subsequent processes have not yet been fully understood. Thus, modern society supported by advanced information systems is at risk from severe space weather disturbances. Project for solar–terrestrial environment prediction (PSTEP) was launched to improve this situation through synergy between basic science research and operational forecast. The PSTEP is a nationwide research collaboration in Japan and was conducted from April 2015 to March 2020, supported by a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan. By this project, we sought to answer the fundamental questions concerning the solar–terrestrial environment and aimed to build a next-generation space weather forecast system to prepare for severe space weather disasters. The PSTEP consists of four research groups and proposal-based research units. It has made a significant progress in space weather research and operational forecasts, publishing over 500 refereed journal papers and organizing four international symposiums, various workshops and seminars, and summer school for graduate students at Rikubetsu in 2017. This paper is a summary report of the PSTEP and describes the major research achievements it produced.

Abstract This paper demonstrates and assesses the capability of the advanced three-dimensional (3-D) ionosphere tomography technique, during severe conditions. The study area is northeast Asia and quasi-Japan-centred. Reconstructions are based on total electron content data from a dense ground-based global navigation satellite system receiver network and parameters from operational ionosondes. We used observations from ionosondes, Swarm satellites and radio occultation (RO) to assess the 3-D picture. Specifically, we focus on St. Patrick’s day geomagnetic storm (17–19 March 2015), the most intense in solar cycle 24. During this event, the energy ingested into the ionosphere resulted in Dst and Kp and reaching values ~ − 223 nT and 8, respectively, and the region of interest, the East Asian sector, was characterized by a ~ 60% reduction in electron densities. Results show that the reconstructed densities follow the physical dynamics previously discussed in earlier publications about storm events. Moreover, even when ionosonde data were not available, the technique could still provide a consistent picture of the ionosphere vertical structure. Furthermore, analyses show that there is a profound agreement between the RO profiles/in-situ densities and the reconstructions. Therefore, the technique is a potential candidate for applications that are sensitive to ionospheric corrections.

Abstract We surveyed the relationship between the scale of space weather events and their occurrence rate in Japan, and we discussed the social impact of these phenomena during the Project for Solar–Terrestrial Environment Prediction (PSTEP) in 2015–2019. The information was compiled for domestic users of space weather forecasts for appropriate preparedness against space weather disasters. This paper gives a comprehensive summary of the survey, focusing on the fields of electricity, satellite operations, communication and broadcasting, satellite positioning usage, aviation, human space activity, and daily life on the Earth’s surface, using the cutting-edge knowledge of space weather. Quantitative estimations of the economic impact of space weather events on electricity supply and aviation are also given. Some topics requiring future research, which were identified during the survey are also described. Graphic Abstract

Abstract Ionospheric total electron content (TEC) is one of the key parameters for users of radio-based systems, such as the Global Navigation Satellite System, high-frequency communication systems, and space-based remote sensing systems, since total ionospheric delay is proportional to TEC through the propagation path. It is important to know extreme TEC values in readiness for hazardous ionospheric conditions. The purpose of this study is to estimate extreme TEC values with occurrences of once per year, 10 years, and hundred years in Japan. In order to estimate the extreme values of TEC, a cumulative distribution function of daily TEC is derived using 22 years of TEC data from 1997 to 2018. The extreme values corresponding to once per year and 10 years are 90 and 110 TECU, respectively, in Tokyo, Japan. On the other hand, the 22-year data set is not sufficient to estimate the once-per-100-year value. Thus, we use the 62-year data set of manually scaled ionosonde data for the critical frequency of the F-layer (foF2) at Kokubunji in Tokyo. First, we study the relationship between TEC and foF2 for 22 years and investigate the slab thickness. Then the result is applied to the statistical distribution of foF2 data for 62 years. In this study, two methods are applied to estimate the extreme TEC value. In the first method, the distribution of slab thickness is artificially inflated to estimate extreme TEC values. In the second method, extreme slab thicknesses are applied to estimate extreme TEC values. The result shows that the once-per-100-year TEC is about 150–190 TECU at Tokyo. The value is also estimated to be 180–230 TECU in Kagoshima and 120–150 TECU in Hokkaido, in the southern and northern parts of Japan, respectively.

Abstract A solar energetic particle (SEP) event generates a shower of secondary generated particles in the Earth’s atmosphere down to lower altitudes to cause an atmospheric radiation storm (ARS). The high-energy secondary particles cause additional radiation dose at altitudes where aircraft flies. The space weather information provided by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) designated space weather centers includes advisories on the solar radiation storm. The Warning System for AVIation Exposure to Solar energetic particle (WASAVIES), we can estimate the effective dose rate (EDR) along the flight path of the aircraft. However, it has not been well established how the operators of aircraft should react with the space weather advisories on the solar radiation storm. By using a flight trajectory generation algorithm and the global EDR distribution, the economic impacts of ARS associated with SEP events on aircraft operation, namely the flight path length, flight time, and fuel consumption, are estimated. The conditions of the peak of the ARS event on 20 January 2005 are used. The economic impacts for a flight route from New York, US to Tokyo, Japan, are estimated with constraints in flight routes to avoid the hazard of radiation and compared with those of the reference case without the ARS effects. The fuel consumption is shown to increase by 39–69 tons (33–58%) for a twin-engine, wide-body jet passenger aircraft, when a constraint is imposed on the flight altitude only. When the constraints are set on the aircraft altitude and the latitude, the flight time and the fuel consumption are both increased by 2.2–2.8 h (17–20%) and 32–48 tons (27–41%), respectively. If the ARS event duration is limited for 3 h, the increase in the fuel consumption is about 7.6–14 tons (6.4–12%). This economic impact may be reduced, if the space weather nowcast and forecast for the ARS and an optimal flight trajectory generation algorithm are used together. Setting more flexible constraints on the flight route and generating optimal flight trajectories with minimal economic impacts by fully utilizing the global EDR distribution is the next step.

Two-dimensional materials have wide ranging applications in electronic devices and catalysts owing to their unique properties. Boron-based compounds, which exhibit a polymorphic nature, are an attractive choice for developing boron-based two-dimensional materials. Among them, rhombohedral boron monosulfide (r-BS) has recently attracted considerable attention owing to its unique layered structure similar to that of transition metal dichalcogenides and a layer-dependent bandgap. However, experimental evidence that clarifies the charge carrier type in the r-BS semiconductor is lacking. In this study, we synthesized r-BS and evaluated its performance as a semiconductor by measuring the Seebeck coefficient and photo-electrochemical responses. The properties unique to p-type semiconductors were observed in both measurements, indicating that the synthesized r-BS is a p-type semiconductor. Moreover, a distinct Fano resonance was observed in Fourier transform infrared absorption spectroscopy, which was ascribed to the Fano resonance between the E(2) (TO) phonon mode and electrons in the band structures of r-BS, indicating that the p-type carrier was intrinsically doped in the synthesized r-BS. These results demonstrate the potential future application prospects of r-BS.

Abstract Insect outbreaks often occur in the absence of natural enemies and in the presence of excess suitable host materials. Outbreaks of gypsy moths are especially problematic in remote areas located in high-latitude regions in Japan because the majority of adults emerge during the short summer season and initiate synchronous mass flight toward artificial lights. The aggregation of moths in public facilities not only is an annoyance to visitors but also permits the establishment of new populations the following year. The aim of this study was to establish a method to reduce the numbers of large moths that are attracted to lights in the rest areas of expressways in Hokkaido based on the results of research on their behavioral ecology and physiology. First, we conducted extensive insect surveys using light traps that emit light at different wavelengths; the traps were set along the expressways in the summers of 2014–2018. The insects attracted to the light were roughly classified into those showing a preference for broadband light wavelengths (from UV-A to green) and short light wavelengths (from UV-A to blue). The former included aquatic insects and winged ants, and the latter included moths and beetles. Next, we analyzed correlations between moth emergence and daily meteorological data. When gypsy moths were abundant during an outbreak, the daily catch of gypsy moths was positively correlated with the highest ambient temperature on the catch day but not with the visibility range, wind speed, or moon phase. In contrast, the daily catch of oak silkmoths did not correlate with any of these parameters. Our results provide guidance for the management of forest insects inhabiting cool-temperate to subarctic regions based on light wavelengths with reference to weather variables.

Abstract Solar flares trigger an increase in plasma density in the ionosphere including the D region, and cause the absorption of radio waves, especially in high-frequency (HF) ranges, called short-wave fadeout (SWF). To evaluate the SWF duration and absorption statistically, we analyze long-term (36 years) ionosonde data observed by the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT). The minimum reflection frequency, fmin, is used to detect SWFs from 15-min-resolution ionosonde observations at Kokubunji, Tokyo, from 1981 to 2016. Since fmin varies with local time (LT) and season, we refer to dfmin, which is defined as fmin subtracted by its 27-day running median at the same LT. We find that the occurrence of SWFs detected by three criteria, (i) dfmin ≥ 2.5 MHz, (ii) dfmin ≥ 3.5 MHz, and (iii) blackout, during daytime associated with any flare(s) greater than the C1 class is maximized at local noon and decreases with increasing solar zenith angle. We confirm that the dfmin and duration of SWFs increase with the solar flare class. We estimate the absorption intensity from observations, which is comparable to an empirical relationship obtained from sudden cosmic noise absorption. A generalized empirical relationship for absorption from long-distance circuits shows quantitatively different dependences on solar flare flux, solar zenith angle, and frequency caused by different signal passes compared with that obtained from cosmic noise absorption. From our analysis and the empirical relationships, we estimate the duration of extreme events with occurrence probabilities of once per 10, 100, and 1000 years to be 1.8–3.6, 4.0–6.8, and 7.4–11.9 h, respectively. The longest duration of SWFs of about 12 h is comparable to the solar flare duration derived from an empirical relationship between the solar flare duration and the solar active area for the largest solar active region observed so far.

Abstract We introduce a network observation of anomalous long-distance propagation of aeronautical navigation (NAV) very high-frequency (VHF) radio waves due to sporadic E layer (Es). The system has been operative since May 2019 at 6 stations in Japan. The receiver consists of a log-periodic antenna, air-band filter, software-defined radio and small computer which is capable of recording the strength of radio signals in the frequency band from 98 to 118 MHz with a temporal resolution of 2 s. The receiver covers not only the NAV band including VHF omnidirectional radio range (VOR), instrument landing system localizer (ILS LOC) and ground-based augmentation system VHF data broadcast (GBAS VDB) from 108 to 118 MHz, but also broadcasting channels from 98 to 108 MHz. Soon after the start of the full operation of the network observation, a strong Es event was detected by an ionosonde in Tokyo during the daytime on July 4, 2019, in which foEs (critical frequency of Es) was sometimes higher than 15 MHz. The VHF radio wave monitoring system detected multiple signatures of Es anomalous propagation (EsAP) at all the stations extending from Okinawa to Hokkaido. At some stations, the EsAP signatures continued for a few hours with some brief intervals of disappearance. The observed correspondence between the enhancement of foEs and the occurrence of anomalous propagation confirmed that an extreme electron density enhancement within Es caused the anomalous long-distance propagation of VHF NAV signals. The data from this network observation can be browsed at http://gwave.cei.uec.ac.jp/cgi-bin/vor/vhf.cgi in near real-time basis. This near real-time monitoring capability allows people in the aeronautical operation community such as air navigation service providers, pilots, and airline engineers to check the propagation environment of VHF NAV signals online, which contributes to a mitigation of ionospheric space weather impacts on the aeronautical navigation systems. Not only that the current method for detecting Es in a wide area can be used to visualize the spatial distribution of Es in two-dimensional fashion through a combination of other observation techniques such as ionosondes and total electron content (TEC) measurements using Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals.

Abstract Here, we introduce a low-cost airglow imaging system developed for observing plasma bubble signatures in 630.0-nm airglow emission from the F region of the ionosphere. The system is composed of a small camera, optical filter, and fish-eye lens, and is operated using free software that automatically records video from the camera. A pilot system was deployed in Ishigaki Island in the southern part of Japan (Lat 24.4, Lon 124.4, Mlat 19.6) and was operated for ~ 1.5 years from 2014 to 2016 corresponding to the recent solar maximum period. The pilot observations demonstrated that it was difficult to identify the plasma bubble signature in the raw image captured every 4 s. However, the quality of the image could be improved by reducing the random noise of instrumental origin through an integration of 30 consecutive raw images obtained in 2 min and further by subtracting the 1-h averaged background image. We compared the deviation images to those from a co-existing airglow imager of OMTIs, which is equipped with a back-illuminated cooled CCD camera with a high quantum efficiency of ~ 90%. It was confirmed that the low-cost airglow imager is capable of imaging the spatial structure of plasma bubbles, including their bifurcating traces. The results of these pilot observations in Ishigaki Island will allow us to distribute the low-cost imager in a wide area and construct a network for monitoring plasma bubbles and their space weather impacts on satellite navigation systems.

The irregularity of the local-area ionospheric delay is a primary impediment for Ground-Based Augmentation System (GBAS) services. Excessive ionospheric delay gradients may degrade aircraft positioning for high precision landing systems. Therefore, the spatial gradients of the nominal background ionosphere must be studied as their statistics will be sent to the approaching aircraft. For the well-known station-pair method, ionospheric delay gradient estimation requires at least 2 Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) reference stations. This method can be applied to both single or dual-frequency GNSS receivers. However, when the GNSS stations are far apart, it is not suitable for estimating the ionospheric delay gradients at short baselines, and the time-step method is an attractive alternative. In this work, we propose a single-frequency time-step method for ionospheric delay gradient estimation. Careful baseline length selection is needed, due to ionospheric piercing point movements. We applied our method to GNSS data in 2014, at the peak of the 24th solar cycle, and showed that the standard deviations of the vertical ionospheric delay gradients were comparable to those derived from the dual-frequency time-step method. The standard deviations of vertical ionospheric gradients, $\sigma _{\mathrm {VIG}}$ , ranged between 4 and 6 mm/km. The $\sigma _{\mathrm {VIG}}$ values around the equinoxes were ~1.5 mm/km greater than at other times.

Background:. Postoperative free flap monitoring is essential for immediately detecting obstruction of anastomosed vessels with successive recovery surgery for salvaging flaps. We performed postoperative nursing monitoring using handheld Doppler sonography, but nurses reported feeling anxious with this approach and demanded a clear-cut evaluation method. Therefore, we implemented monitoring with the fingerstall-type tissue oximeter Toccare, a noninvasive device that enables easy flap checking by simply touching the flap with a probe. Method:. Handheld Doppler was used for nursing monitoring from April to October 2020, with anxiety associated with its use reported. We collected information via an anonymous questionnaire to determine the reason for the anxiety. Toccare was subsequently applied for postoperative free flap monitoring by nurses. The protocol involved measuring tissue oxygen saturation by touching the flap with a Toccare probe every 4 hours from 24 to 100 hours postoperatively. Seven months later, a second anonymous questionnaire was conducted, and results were compared. Result:. Free deep inferior epigastric artery perforator flaps and anterolateral thigh flaps (n = 5 each) were included. The average tissue oxygen saturation values in the deep inferior epigastric artery perforator and anterolateral thigh flaps were 52.0% and 52.4%, respectively. According to the second questionnaire about Toccare, 7% felt anxious, 62% felt slightly anxious, and 31% did not feel anxious. Toccare was preferred by 89% of nurses who had used both methods. Conclusions:. Flap monitoring using Toccare reduced nurses’ anxiety. A numerical evaluation method with easy handling and clear doctor call criteria is essential for low-anxiety nursing monitoring.

Over the last half century, layered materials have been at the forefront of materials science, spearheading the discovery of new phenomena and functionalities. Certain layered materials are known to possess electronic states unassociated with any of the constituent atoms, having a large proportion of their probability amplitude in the space between the layers. Usually, such a nucleus‐free interlayer state has energy above the Fermi level and is unoccupied. However, the energy decreases when cations are intercalated and may cross the Fermi level, as in the case of C6Ca, a superconductor with a Tc of 11.5 K. A major thrust to the research of interlayer electrons comes with the discovery of layered electrides, which are alternating stacks of positively charged ionic layers and negatively charged sheets of electrons in the interlayer space. When intercalation compounds and layered electrides are thinned down to the atomic scale, the interlayer states survive as surface states floating over the surface. This review provides a unified overview of the two classes of materials hosting interlayer floating electrons near the Fermi level, intercalation compounds and layered electrides, and their properties, including high electron mobility, low work function, ultralow interlayer friction, superconductivity, and plasmonic properties.

Summary:. Replacing an infected prosthetic thoracic aorta graft carries a high re-infection risk. We previously reported two clinical cases successfully treated with a new muscular wrapping technique: latissimus dorsi (LD) muscle flap with a distally based serratus anterior (SA) extension; however, a cadaveric study to prove the regular existence of the distal attachment area was lacking. We tried to establish an appropriate way of elevating the combined muscle flap safely. All of the cadavers were preserved using the Thiel embalming technique to retain flexibility. We checked for the existence of the distal attachment area between the LD and SA. Combined muscle flaps were elevated proximally while identifying the thoracodorsal artery, including the LD and SA branches. After the SA branch was ligated and cut, the SA muscle was manually peeled from the LD muscle with only the distal tight attachment area remaining. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography was performed using a multislice computed tomography system. Six human cadavers (three men, three women: 91 years old, on average) were examined. All six LD and SA combined muscle flaps showed a distal tight attachment area at the level from the seventh rib to the ninth rib. The tip of the SA muscle easily reached the sternum. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography failed to reconfirm the distal vascular flow from the LD to the reverse SA muscle, which we had visualized in a clinical case. We demonstrated the anatomical reliability of the new Y-shaped muscular flaps, which are suitable for preventing re-infection of aortic graft replacement.

Abstract The geometric organization of collagen fibers in human reticular dermis and its relationship to that of elastic fibers remain unclear. The tight packing and complex intertwining of dermal collagen fibers hinder accurate analysis of fiber orientation. We hypothesized that combined multiphoton microscopy and biaxial extension could overcome this issue. Continuous observation of fresh dermal sheets under biaxial extension revealed that the geometry of the elastic fiber network is maintained during expansion. Full-thickness human thigh skin samples were biaxially extended and cleared to visualize the entire reticular dermis. Throughout the dermis, collagen fibers straightened with increased inter-fiber spaces, making them more clearly identifiable after extension. The distribution of collagen fibers was evaluated with compilation of local orientation data. Two or three modes were confirmed in all superficial reticular layer samples. A high degree of local similarities in the direction of collagen and elastic fibers was observed. More than 80% of fibers had directional differences of ≤15°, regardless of layer. Understanding the geometric organization of fibers in the reticular dermis improves the understanding of mechanisms underlying the pliability of human skin. Combined multiphoton imaging and biaxial extension provides a research tool for studying the fibrous microarchitecture of the skin.

Bovine leukemia virus (BLV) infects cattle and integrates into host DNA, causing enzootic bovine leukosis (EBL), an aggressive B-cell lymphoma. Here, we developed a novel proviral DNA-capture sequencing (proviral DNA-capture-seq) method investigating BLV proviral integration in two B-cell lymphoma lines, BLSC-KU1 and BLSC-KU17, derived from BLV-infected cattle with EBL. We designed BLV-specific biotinylated probes to capture the provirus genome and enrich libraries for next-generation sequencing. Validation showed high specificity and efficient enrichment of target sequence reads as well as identification of three BLV proviral integration sites on BLV persistently infected FLK-BLV cells as a positive control. We successfully detected a single BLV proviral integration site on chromosome 19 of BLSC-KU1 and chromosome 9 of BLSC-KU17, which were confirmed by standard PCR and Sanger sequencing. Further, a defective provirus in BLSC-KU1 and complete BLV proviral sequence in BLSC-KU17 were confirmed using long PCR and sequencing. This is the first study to provide comprehensive information on BLV proviral structure and viral integration in BLSC-KU1 and BLSC-KU17. Moreover, the proposed method can facilitate understanding of the detailed mechanisms underlying BLV-induced leukemogenesis and may be used as an innovative tool to screen BLV-infected cattle at risk at an earlier stage than those that have already developed lymphoma.

Graphene is a good candidate material for high-performance sensor devices due to its excellent conductivity and large surface-to-volume ratio. Bilayer of graphene exhibits rich electronic properties owing to a variety of its stacking patterns, which may provide novel sensors. In this article, we present adsorption effects of environmental pollutants or hazardous molecules (CO, CO2, NO, and NO2) and abundant molecules (O2 and N2) in air on stabilities of boron (B)-doped bilayer graphenes with Bernal (AB)-stacking as well as AA- and AA′-stacking patterns based on a first-principles density-functional study. We find that only NO and NO2 molecules in air are chemically adsorbed on B-doped bilayer graphenes with AB, AA and AA′ stackings. We further investigate, for the first time, electronic transport properties through pristine and B-doped bilayer graphenes with and without NO and NO2 molecules from our first-principles density-functional study. We find that electronic transport properties of AB-, AA-, and AA′-stacked bilayer graphenes exhibit specific behaviors depending on the stacking patterns and the presence of the NO/NO2 molecule. Therefore, NO and NO2 molecules should be individually detectable under low bias voltages by using B-doped bilayer graphene. In addition, we also reveal the electronic transport properties of the very thin pristine and doped carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with and without a hazardous molecule and discuss their curvature effects of the CNT. Our theoretical findings for bilayer graphenes and CNTs should provide new insight into designing graphene-based low-power sensor devices.

Premise Young plant roots share a common architecture: a central vascular cylinder surrounded by enveloping cylinders of ground and dermal tissue produced by an apical promeristem. Roots with closed apical organization can be studied to explore how ontogeny is managed. The analysis of transverse and longitudinal sections has been the most useful approach for this, but suffers from limitations. We developed a new method that utilizes digital photography of transverse sections and three‐dimensional (3D) computer virtual reconstructions to overcome the limitations of other techniques. Methods Serial transverse sections of teosinte root tips (Zea mays subsp. mexicana) were used to construct longitudinal images, 3D images, and an animated 3D model. The high‐resolution, high‐contrast, and low‐distortion sectioning method developed previously by the authors enabled high‐quality virtual image construction with the aid of a standard laptop computer. Results The resulting 3D images allowed greater insight into root tissue ontogeny and organization, especially specific cellular structures such as histogen layers, xylem vessels, pericycle, and meristematic initials. Discussion This new method has advantages over confocal laser scanning microscopy and magnetic resonance imaging for visualizing anatomy, and includes a procedure to correct for sectioning distortion. An additional advantage of this method, developed to produce better knowledge about the developmental anatomy of procambium in roots, is its applicability to a wide range of anatomical subjects.

Allogeneic cultured epidermis (allo-CE) is a cultured keratinocyte sheet manufactured from donor cells and promotes wound healing when used in deep dermal burns, donor sites, and chronic ulcers and serves as a wound dressing. Allo-CE is usually cryopreserved to be ready to use. However, the cryopreservation procedure will damage the cell viability, and the influence of Allo-CE, according to its viability or wound healing process, has not been evaluated sufficiently. In this study, we aimed to prove the influence of keratinocyte viability contained in allo-CEs on wound healing. We prepared CEs with Green's method using keratinocytes obtained from a polydactyly patient and then prepared four kinds of CEs with different cell viabilities [fresh, cryopreserved, frozen, and FT (freeze and thaw)]. The cell viabilities of fresh, cryopreserved, frozen, and FT CEs were 95.7%, 59.9%, 16.7%, and 0.0%, respectively. The four CEs had homogeneous characteristics, except for small gaps found in the FT sheet by transmission electron microscopy observation. The four CEs were applied on the full-thickness skin defect of diabetic mice (BKS.Cg-Dock 7m +/+ Leprdb/Jcl), and the wound area and neoepithelium length were evaluated on days 4, 7, and 14. Abstract Direct functionalization of amino groups in complex organic molecules is one of the most important key technologies in modern organic synthesis, especially in the synthesis of bio-active chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Whereas numerous chemical reactions of amines have been developed to date, a selective, practical method for functionalizing complex amines is still highly demanded. Here we report the first late-stage N-alkylation of pharmaceutically relevant amines with alcohols at ambient temperature. This reaction was achieved by devising a mixed heterogeneous photocatalyst in situ prepared from Cu/TiO2 and Au/TiO2. The mixed photocatalytic system enabled the rapid N-alkylation of pharmaceutically relevant molecules, the selective mono- and di-alkylation of primary amines, and the non-symmetrical dialkylation of primary amines to hetero-substituted tertiary amines.

Abstract According to the so-called upwelling paradigm, development of equatorial plasma bubbles (EPBs) involves (1) appearance of an upwelling (i.e., local uplift with a zonal width of ~ 400 km) in the bottomside of the equatorial F layer, (2) its growth via the F-region interchange instability during the post-sunset rise (PSSR) of the F layer, and (3) launching of EPBs, which starts near the end of PSSR, from within the confines of the upwelling. In this description, the PSSR is presumed to be the primary driver of the paradigm, with upwelling growth dependent on PSSR strength. As constructed, the paradigm describes EPB development when PSSR is strong (i.e., high solar activity), but not when it is weak. We, show, for the first time, that when PSSR is weak (e.g., low solar activity), upwelling growth can still be comparable in strength to what would be considered a strong PSSR, and that this growth drives EPB development. Given that EPBs do not develop outside of upwellings, regardless of solar activity, we are led to conclude, against mainstream thinking, that the controlling driver for EPB development is upwelling growth, not PSSR. For continued progress toward understanding EPB development, a crucial next step is to identify the source mechanism for upwelling growth, especially when PSSR is weak, and to better understand the complexities of the underlying physics.

Abstract Carboxylic acids (CAs) are one of the most ubiquitous and important chemical feedstocks available from biorenewable resources, CO2, and the petrochemical industry. Unfortunately, chemoselective catalytic transformations of CH n CO2H (n = 1–3) groups into other functionalities remain a significant challenge. Herein, we report rheniumV complexes as extremely effective precatalysts for this purpose. Compared to previously reported heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts derived from high- or low-valent metals, the present method involves a α-C–H bond functionalization, a hydrogenation, and a hydrogenolysis, which affords functionalized alcohols with a wide substrate scope and high chemoselectivity under relatively mild reaction conditions. The results represent an important step toward a paradigm shift from ‘low-valent’ to ‘high-valent’ metal complexes by exploring a new portfolio of selective functional group transformations of highly oxygenated organic substrates, as well as toward the exploitation of CAs as a valuable biorenewable feedstock.

Abstract Amides are ubiquitous and abundant in nature and our society, but are very stable and reluctant to salt-free, catalytic chemical transformations. Through the activation of a “sterically confined bipyridine–ruthenium (Ru) framework (molecularly well-designed site to confine adsorbed H2 in)” of a precatalyst, catalytic hydrogenation of formamides through polyamide is achieved under a wide range of reaction conditions. Both C=O bond and C–N bond cleavage of a lactam became also possible using a single precatalyst. That is, catalyst diversity is induced by activation and stepwise multiple hydrogenation of a single precatalyst when the conditions are varied. The versatile catalysts have different structures and different resting states for multifaceted amide hydrogenation, but the common structure produced upon reaction with H2, which catalyzes hydrogenation, seems to be “H–Ru–N–H.”

Background: A breast-specific photoacoustic imaging (PAI) system prototype equipped with a hemispherical detector array (HDA) has been reported as a promising system configuration for providing high morphological reproducibility for vascular structures in living bodies. Methods: To image the vasculature of human limbs, a newly designed PAI system prototype (PAI-05) with an HDA with a higher density sensor arrangement was developed. The basic device configuration mimicked that of a previously reported breast-specific PAI system. A new imaging table and a holding tray for imaging a subject's limb were adopted. Results: The device’s performance was verified using a phantom. Contrast of 8.5 was obtained at a depth of 2 cm, and the viewing angle reached up to 70 degrees, showing sufficient performance for limb imaging. An arbitrary wavelength was set, and a reasonable PA signal intensity dependent on the wavelength was obtained. To prove the concept of imaging human limbs, various parts of the subject were scanned. High-quality still images of a living human with a wider size than that previously reported were obtained by scanning within the horizontal plane and averaging the images. The maximum field of view (FOV) was 270 mm × 180 mm. Even in movie mode, one-shot 3D volumetric data were obtained in an FOV range of 20 mm in diameter, which is larger than values in previous reports. By continuously acquiring these images, we were able to produce motion pictures. Conclusion: We developed a PAI prototype system equipped with an HDA suitable for imaging limbs. As a result, the subject could be scanned over a wide range while in a more comfortable position, and high-quality still images and motion pictures could be obtained.

Root apical meristem histological organization in Zea mays has been carefully studied previously. Classical histology describes its system as having a “closed organization” and a development of xylem that conforms to predictable rules. Among the first cell types to begin differentiation are late-maturing metaxylem (LMX) vessels. As part of a larger study comparing domestic maize root development to a wild subspecies of Z. mays (teosinte), we encountered a metaxylem development abnormality in a small percentage of our specimens that begged further study, as it interrupted normal maturation of LMX. Primary root tips of young seedlings of Zea mays ssp. mexicana were fixed, embedded in appropriate resins, and sectioned for light and transmission electron microscopy. Longitudinal and serial transverse sections were analyzed using computer imaging to determine the position and timing of key xylem developmental events. We observed a severe abnormality of LMX development among 3.5% of the 227 mexicana seedlings we screened. All LMX vessel elements in these abnormal roots collapsed and probably became non-functional shortly after differentiation began. Cytoplasm and nucleoplasm in the abnormal LMX elements became condensed and subdivided into irregularly-shaped “macrovesicles” as their cell walls collapsed inward. We propose that these seedlings possibly suffered from a mutation that affected the timing of the programmed cell death (PCD) that is required to produce functional xylem vessels, such that autolysis of the cytoplasm was prematurely executed, i.e., prior to the development and lignification of secondary walls.

Bovine leukemia virus (BLV) is the causative agent of enzootic bovine leucosis. However, less than 5% of BLV-infected cattle will develop lymphoma, suggesting that, in addition to viral infection, host genetic polymorphisms might play a role in disease susceptibility. Bovine leukocyte antigen (BoLA)-DRB3 is a highly polymorphic gene associated with BLV proviral load (PVL) susceptibility. Due to the fact that PVL is positively associated with disease progression, it is believed that controlling PVL can prevent lymphoma development. Thus, many studies have focused on the relationship between PVL and BoLA-DRB3. Despite this, there is little information regarding the relationship between lymphoma and BoLA-DRB3. Furthermore, whether or not PVL-associated BoLA-DRB3 is linked to lymphoma-associated BoLA-DRB3 has not been clarified. Here, we investigated whether or not lymphoma-associated BoLA-DRB3 is correlated with PVL-associated BoLA-DRB3. We demonstrate that two BoLA-DRB3 alleles were specifically associated with lymphoma resistance (*010:01 and *011:01), but no lymphoma-specific susceptibility alleles were found; furthermore, two other alleles, *002:01 and *012:01, were associated with PVL resistance and susceptibility, respectively. In contrast, lymphoma and PVL shared two resistance-associated (DRB3*014:01:01 and *009:02) BoLA-DRB3 alleles. Interestingly, we found that PVL associated alleles, but not lymphoma associated alleles, are related with the anti-BLV gp51 antibody production level in cows. Overall, our study is the first to demonstrate that the BoLA-DRB3 polymorphism confers differential susceptibility to BLV-induced lymphoma and PVL.
