This book explores how the education sector can transition to being truly sustainable and why necessary innovations for educational change are being subverted and undermined when mapped onto the existing industrial educational system.Based on PhD case study research with schools that are modelling and teaching sustainability, action research, and the author's 40 years of working in the K-12 system, this volume examines how education continues to perpetuate the status quo, and why education innovations are thus undermined. History is not typically the discipline of choice for teaching leadership thought for tackling complex environmental problem-solving. This book argues for its inclusion in programs for all ages. It argues that learning how to think in non-linear, non-binary ways - or systems thinking - leads to the successful resolution of such problems. The City is an Ecosystem maps an interdisciplinary, community-engaged response to the great ecological crises of our time—climate change, biodiversity loss, and social inequality—which pose particular challenges for cities, where more than half the world's population currently live. Transitioning to Quality Education focuses on the fourth UN Sustainable Development Goal. According to SDG 4, every learner should acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development (UN 2015, 17). Empowering Teachers through Environmental and Sustainability Education draws inspiration from an empirical study exploring early career teachers'attempts at enacting Environmental and Sustainability Education (ESE) in their everyday teaching practices. It showcases how a confluence of personal, professional and environmental identities supports implementation of ESE. Additionally, this book discusses key concepts and issues surrounding ESE and the ways in which teachers may claim agency and power to create change in their classroom practices. Drawing from theoretical perspectives, such as Bourdieu's ‘thinking tools'habitus and capital, theories of identity, and Foucault's concept of power and knowledge relations, this book explores how teachers negotiate policies, curriculum and institutional norms to further theoretical and practical understanding of ESE. The use of personal narratives offers new insights into teachers'agency in creating localised yet powerful change through small and meaningful actions. The purpose of this book, therefore, is to explore ways in which meaningful change can be made in educational settings through these small agentive and yet empowering steps. This book reveals that teachers can enact agency and navigate the power structures that exist within educational settings in order to make ESE meaningful within their classrooms.

In the burgeoning field of ecolinguistics, little attention has been given to the ways in which English language teaching is and has become implicated in global ecological crises. This book begins a dialogue about the opportunities and responsibilities presented to the TESOL field to re-orient professional practice in ways that drive cultural change and engender alternate language practices and metaphors. Covering a diverse range of topics, including anthropogenic climate change, habitat loss, food insecurity and mass migration, chapters argue that such crises require not only technological innovation, but also cultural changes in how human beings relate to each other and their environment. Arguing that it is incumbent upon the field of English language teaching to reckon with such cultural changes in how and what we teach, TESOL and Sustainability addresses the ways in which discourses such as eco-pedagogy, the critique of neo-liberalism, non-Western philosophy and post-humanist thought can and must inform how and what is taught in ESL and EFL classrooms.

This book was inspired by the inaugural National Roundtable on Environmental and Sustainability Education in Canadian Faculties of Education (Roundtable 2016), which took place June 14-16, 2016, at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario. Roundtable 2016 brought together over seventy participants from across Canada, including educators, researchers, policy-makers, consultants, and community organizations. Over the course of three days, participants took part in keynote addresses, research colloquia, networking socials, and collaborative inquiry activities focused on Environmental Sustainability Education in Teacher Education (ESE-TE). Roundtable 2016 resulted in the publication of a National Action Plan containing action-oriented recommendations for enhancing ESE-TE, and a position statement titled “The Otonabee Declaration,” where delegates articulated their views regarding environmental degradation, the critical need for enhancing ESE-TE, and, the role educators, children,youth, educational institutions, policy makers, and Indigenous communities play in enhancing ESE-TE in Canada. This volume concludes with a discussion placing current Canadian ESE-TE theory and practice within an international context.

This book offers an accessible guide to understanding the importance of a systems approach to embedding sustainability into teacher education practice, providing a practical resource for teacher education academics and others with an interest in organisational change. Transformative eco-education is environmental education that is literally needed to transform and save our planet, especially during the global ecological crises of our present century. Such education demands inner transformation of many deeply rooted ideas, such as the following: the Earth exists merely to provide for human comfort; the extinction or reduction of other species does not matter; we are free to consume or destroy natural resources at will but are safe from destruction ourselves; and the Earth will continue to sustain us, even if we do not sustain the Earth. Unless these concepts are changed, we will increase global warming and add to the ruin of much of the Earth. This book presents powerful ideas for transformative eco-education. At this time of ever-increasing ecological crisis, such education is needed more than ever before. We urge readers to use the ideas and activities in this book with your students, develop them further, and create new conceptions to share with other educators and students. The chapters in this book provide key principles, of which the following are just a few. First, educators can and should prepare students for natural disasters. Second, stories, case studies, the arts, and hands-on environmental experience, all enriched by reflection and discussion, can offer profound learning about ecology. Third, education at all levels can benefit from a true ecological emphasis. Fourth, teachers must receive preparation in how to employ transformative eco-education. Fifth, Indigenous wisdom can offer important, holistic, spiritual paths to understanding and caring for nature, and other spiritual traditions also provide valid ways of comprehending humans as part of the universal web of existence. Design for Sustainable Change explores how design thinking and design-led entrepreneurship can address the issue of sustainability. It discusses the ways in which design thinking is evolving and being applied to a much wider spectrum of social and environmental issues, beyond its traditional professional territory. The result is designers themselves evolving, and developing greater design mindfulness in relation to what they do and how they do it. This book looks at design thinking as a methodology which, by its nature, considers issues of sustainability, but which does not necessarily seek to define itself in those terms. It explores the gradual extension of this methodology into the larger marketplace and the commercial and social implications of such an extension.

The aim of this special issue of Journal of Management & Organization is to explore the role of business schools and institutions of higher education in fostering the individual and organisational capabilities necessary for change for corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainability. Growing awareness in organisations and governments about the need to develop leadership and management skills for sustainability was recognised by the United Nations when it declared a Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (Decade) (2005–2014). The aim of this Decade was to promote a better understanding of the three pillars of sustainability: environmental, social and economic sustainability. At the same time, marked by the emergence of inter-governmental and business networks such as the Global Compact and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, increasing attention was being paid to the responsibilities of business and corporations. The term CSR has been used to refer to the broad range of responsibilities that business has towards its many stakeholders. These stakeholders include shareholders, as well as customers, employees, local communities, governments, future generations and the environment. The nature of CSR and the extent of business's responsibilities are topics for substantial debate. Despite the recent financial crisis, there is evidence that many senior managers continue to perceive good governance, CSR and corporate sustainability as fundamental to the long-term successful operations of any organization. In the recent 13th Annual Global CEO survey by PricewaterhouseCoopers, for example, more CEOs raised climate change investment during the crisis than reduced it and more than two-thirds thought such strategies would confer reputational advantages. And according to an Accenture Report for the 2010 UN Global Compact, 93% of 766 CEOs of global companies surveyed in 2010 believed that sustainability issues will be critical to the future success of their organisations and 96% believed that sustainability issues should be fully integrated into strategy and operations (Accenture, 2010). Similarly, research conducted by Boston Consulting Group (2009) involving a global survey of 1500 executives and 50 interviews reported a strong consensus that sustainability is having a material impact on how companies behave and plan to behave. In other words, the topics of sustainability and CSR are now at the forefront of business strategising for the future. Students in business and management schools are the managers of the future. They will need knowledge and skills to enable them to navigate the arguments about the corporate responsibilities and to stimulate further change for sustainability. Clearly, specific knowledge needs to be built within our business schools around carbon management, for example. But bridges also need to be built across our disciplinary areas if we are to address the challenges that many scientists now argue are threatening the survival of the planet. Education for sustainable management represents a broad, holistic approach which encompasses the three areas of environmental, financial and human/ social sustainability (Springett, 2005). It is also very concerned with the development of capabilities for change, such as critical reflection and inquiry and the exploration and management of complexity. This issue of the Journal of Management & Organization includes seven articles drawn from a number of countries. This is a truly global issue. The manuscripts indicate the diversity of approaches to education for sustainable management in different regions and countries.
