This study examines the sustainability and green banking performance of Indonesian banking sectors from their disclosures in sustainability reports covering a period of nine consecutive years. The findings elucidate that sustainability and green-banking disclosures are still dynamic year to year. Economic disclosures are the most widely disclosed information, while environmental disclosures are the lowest. Applying a content analysis method, this study uses the sustainability disclosure guidelines from the global reporting initiatives (GRI) and Measuring Green Banking Practices guidelines developed by Shaumya and Arulrajah (2016). Combining these two measurements provided a more comprehensive disclosure list as guidance. This study is important, as it will contribute to the literature on green banking, which is scarce in the extant literature. Given the lack of standardization in sustainability, this study develops an indicator database to advance research on sustainability measurement and reporting in relation to green banking. The managerial implications for banks implementing sustainability they require sustainability governance as a platform to evaluate and monitor the sustainable finance action plan and build a sustainability strategy. This will enable banks to manage not only economic, but also environmental, social, and governance (ESG) risk.

Self-help groups are informal associations that use social capital to overcome resource constraints and act as a catalyst for rural development, women, and social empowerment. This study tries to identify the factors that affect the sustainability of self-help groups in natural disaster-affected communities. Natural calamities in the form of droughts, floods, or cyclones pose major challenges to livelihood in disaster-prone regions. The study is based on survey data from two different disaster-prone locations: the cyclone- and flood-prone Sundarbans, and drought-prone Bankura in West Bengal, India. Applying principal component analysis to the responses of 143 self-help group members, the study identifies four factors responsible for the sustainability of these self-help groups. This study shows that managerial functions, trust, fund utilization, and easy financing are the factors that matter the most. The findings suggest that policymakers and local governments can focus on these aspects to ensure the effectiveness of self-help groups in meeting their social objectives.

Over the past years, an increasing number of initiatives was considered to address emerging global sustainability issues. Sustainability assessment tools were the most commonly applied methodologies towards measuring sustainability performance. There are a number of assessment tools and techniques for sustainable development. This article aims at identifying the various sustainability assessment tools at country level taking into consideration the integration of environmental, economic, and social dimensions. The target of this paper is to compare the various sustainability measurement techniques and their characteristics using evaluation criteria. The outcome of this analysis is used to direct and clarify researchers and practitioners on sustainability assessment at country level, more specifically in developing countries. The focus of the paper rests on the Brundtland Report definition of sustainable development. The work was carried out using a bibliometric analysis approach based on Web of Science platform from the period 2000 to 2020. There was tremendous works which were conducted on sustainability assessment during the last two decades. The comparative analyses show the research gap among the various tools with respect to the criteria they satisfied. The research discussion suggests that a sustainability assessment framework for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) is identified as a future research direction.

This paper evaluated the performance of the project: “Farmer Cluster-Managed Bagsakan (trading center) Model in Lantapan, Bukidnon”. It used the CIPP and OECD-DAC evaluation frameworks to make sense of the data. The said project envisioned to operate a farmer-cluster managed bagsakan center. The bagsakan was operationalized and result shows that farmers derived higher profit when they brought their products in the center compared to marketing it to major cities. Other outputs of the project are the trainings conducted but these did not reflect significant contribution to the bagsakan operation. In terms of the relevance of the project, its objective is found valid because it answers to the needs and problems confronting the vegetable farmers. Effectiveness assessment tells that to a little extent the project’s objective was attained given the bagsakan’s operationalization. Sustainability measurement of the project was not realized since the operation only lasted for one year.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to design an inference engine to measure the level of readiness of each bank before starting the corporate sustainability auditing process. Based on the output of the designed inference engine, the audition team can decide about the audition resources and the auditing process. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, the hybrid rough and grey set theory are used to design and create a rule model system to measure the sustainability level of banks. First, 16 rule models are extracted using rough set theory (RST), and the cross-validation of each model is done. Then, the grey clustering is used to combine the same condition attributes and improve the validity of the final model. A total of 16 new rule models are extracted based on the decreased condition attributes, and the best model is selected based on the cross-validation results. Findings By comparing the accuracy of rough-gray’s rule models and as a result of decreasing the condition attributes, a proper increase in the accuracy of all models is obtained. Finally, the Naive/Genetic/object-related reducts model with 95.6% accuracy is selected as an inference engine to measure new banks’ readiness level. Originality/value Sustainability measurement of banks based on RST is a new approach in the field of corporate sustainability. Furthermore, using the grey clustering for combining the condition attributes is a novel solution for improving the accuracy of the rule models.

With the effects of inclusive economic predicament of 2008, the obstinate problems of importunate poverty and environmental change have focused the attention towards maintaining the sustainability by establishing balance in the triple bottom line (TBL). In this paper, we have tried to critically examine the philosophy of triple bottom line and it’s relevance in maintaining the sustainability. The process of maintaining sustainability in the TBL is undoubtedly facilitated by the citizenship behaviour of companies (Henriques et al. Routledge, London, 2013). Yet the triple bottom line philosophy is being accepted by different researchers because they consider TBL is one of the concepts evaluating and improving the sustainability. Critics are typically “slow to praise and quick to criticize” (Mish and Scammon, J Public Policy Market 29:12–26, 2010) with this the critics of TBL argue on its practicality and validity. One of the critical studies of TBL regarded it as intrinsically ambiguous because it is unable to convey its exact meaning (Norman and MacDonald, Bus Ethics Q 14:243–262, 2004). Triple Bottom Line a framework of sustainability to examine the social, environmental and economic impact of company was recalled by Elikington it's originator despite rapid growth in the area of sustainability extending up over one million dollar in a year as he realized that TBL was not meeting the purpose for which it was created. After comprehensive understanding and building upon the available literature, this paper criticizes TBL and reveals that this philosophy is not based on the real concept, nothing is new, unique and innovative in it. It only explains the already existing concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and a sustainability measurement tool.

As understanding grows of the scale of health care's environmental impacts, so too does interest in measuring and reporting on sustainability as a facet of health care system performance. This article examines important lessons from health care's long experience with performance and quality measurement and reporting that can be applied to the creation of health care sustainability metrics. Although some large health systems such as Kaiser Permanente have invested heavily in environmental stewardship, in the US the focus of health care sustainability measurement and reporting has typically been on corporate social responsibility and climate risk disclosure. The ability of health care organizations to generate data on and control environmental impacts can be limited by legacy infrastructure and complex supply chains. However, just as in other domains of performance, health care sustainability measurement and reporting must proceed from a clear conceptual framework and statement of purpose. Measurement must reflect strategic goals, instead of letting goals become dictated by ease of measurement. Health system leaders now need to set clear and compelling sustainability goals, invest in internationally comparable metrics by which to measure their success, and embed them in their core business.

PurposeThe purposes of this research article are as follows: to explore the understanding of the Industry 4.0 (I4.0) concept among Indian manufacturing industries, to determine the motivating factors for I4.0 implementation, to identify I4.0 enabling technologies which are used by Indian manufacturing industries and assess their sustainability, to explore the impact of above identified enabling technologies on sustainability pillars, to determine how Indian manufacturing industries interpret the concept of I4.0 and to develop a road map for I4.0 implementation and sustainability.Design/methodology/approachTo perform this research work, a dual research methodology was adopted. Questionnaires were sent to 16 Indian manufacturing industries, and expert interviews were conducted with seven experts who have been practicing the I4.0 concept since the last three years in their business. Also, a sustainability measurement tool was developed to measure the sustainability of the used I4.0 enabling technologies.FindingsIn this research article, it is found that smart sensors and robot arms have high sustainability, whereas cyber physical systems (CPSs) and big data analytics have low sustainability. During an expert interview, it has been found that adoption of the I4.0 concept in Indian manufacturing industries is creating job loss fear in employees. Also, it is found that Indian workers must be trained to adopt and sustain I4.0 enabling technologies.Research limitations/implicationsThe sustainability of I4.0 enabling technologies in Indian manufacturing industries was indicated by analyzing responses received through questionnaires and expert interviews. There are other measures of sustainability which are beyond this study. Further studies are expected to fill the gap.Practical implicationsThe authors have explored reasons for low sustainability of I4.0 enabling technologies in Indian manufacturing industries, suggested a road map for its implementation and sustainability and identified the relationship between different parameters (such as job loss, job creation, workers’ qualification and business profit) and I4.0 sustainability, therefore helping Indian organizations to develop sustainable manufacturing systems based on the I4.0 concept.Originality/valueThis research article gives an idea about sustainability of I4.0 enabling technologies in Indian manufacturing industries.

Sustainability measurement of banks is a complicated process, mainly dependent on the intuition of banking and sustainability experts. In this paper, a Decision Support System (DSS) is designed, which can accurately determine the corporate sustainability level of banks based on the banks’ self-declaration of sustainability indexes. The goal of this DSS is to predict the sustainability level of a bank by using self-declaration data provided by top managers of a bank before starting the costly and time-consuming process of sustainability auditing to help the assessment team for better planning before starting the process. In order to create such a system, sustainability auditing processes of 8 banks were investigated, and subsequently, 29 condition attributes and one decision attribute are determined as decision system of the rough set. ROSETTA software is used to extract 16 rule models regarding different discretization methods, reduct generating techniques, and rule generating approaches. The rules that are generated from the Naive/Genetic/object-related model (with the considerably high accuracy of 91.5%) are selected as the inference engine of DSS.

Sustainable development of tourist destinations, of any scale, such as countries, regions or municipalities, is hampered by the challenges that sustainability measurement faces. Although progress is being made in the measurement of tourism standards, such as IRTS 2008, by the UN and UNWTO, measurement of tourism at the subnational level still lacks international standards. In addition, measuring tourism sustainability means even more difficulties for tourism destinations, since standards have not yet been internationally agreed and resources and skills to develop them are scarce. To avoid or mitigate the excess of tourists, destinations that seek sustainable tourism development often include measures of tourism carrying capacity as part of their management processes. The methodology for measuring tourism carrying capacity of tourism resources, when seeking to obtain a maximum number of visitors that a destination can accept, is abundant. This is the case of those resources with clear entry and exit points. However, when an inhabited tourism destination wishes to avoid or mitigate the problems of tourism carrying capacity excess for the entire destination and not just of a tourism resource, from a management perspective and without pointing to a single figure, the literature on methodologies in this regard is scarce. This work considers a general common-weights network data envelopment analysis (DEA) model which is applicable to most network systems, except those with feedbacks and cycles. The principle of compromise, of the technique for order preference by similarity ideal solution (TOPSIS), is employed to find the common set of weights in the general network DEA model. The proposed method is applied to assess the environmental sustainability performance of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries. Our results show that most countries have a large difference in the rank of efficiencies between the eco-efficiency and production efficiency stages, which reveals the source that causes the low environmental sustainability scores of the whole process.

Temeljni cilj ovoga rada bio je analizirati te izmjeriti usklađenost odabranih hrvatskih destinacija s GSTC kriterijima održivosti, Osim ovog, bio je cilj identificirati nedostatke u postojećom spoznajama te donijeti preporuke u kontekstu izazova održivosti s kojima se promatrane destinacije susreću. Teorijski dio rada sistematizirao je temeljne pojmove GSTC kao organizacije, koncepta održivosti, održivog turizma te načina implementacije održivog turizma u destinaciju. Osim toga, razrađena je i problematika mjerenja održivosti i nedostatka konsenzusa oko istog. Anketnim istraživanjem koje je provedeno kod uprava nacionalnih parkova te turističkih zajednica odabranih gradova ustanovljena je razina usklađenosti svake pojedine destinacije sa svim kriterijima GSTC-a. U obradi podataka i analiziranju istraživanja također su uspoređeni odgovori ruralnih i gradskih destinacija te je dan detaljniji prikaz o tome s kojim su kriterijima više usklađene ruralne, a s kojim gradske destinacije. Također, na temelju rezultata, dane su i preporuke na čemu bi sve odabrane destinacije trebale poraditi ukoliko žele svoje poslovanje temeljiti na konceptu održivosti. Rezultati ovog istraživanja mogu koristiti svim destinacijama iz uzorka, te svim ostalim destinacijama koje žele usporediti uspješnost implementacije održivosti s nekim od vodećih hrvatskih turističkih destinacija. The main goal of this paper was to analyse and measure the sustainability and compliance of selected Croatian destinations with GSTC sustainability criteria. In addition, the goal was to identify gaps in existing knowledge and make recommendations in the context of sustainability challenges with which are observed. The theoretical part of the paper systematized the basic concepts of GSTC as an organisation, concepts of sustainability, sustainable tourism and ways of implementing sustainable tourism into the destination. In addition, the issue of measuring sustainability and lack of consensus around it has been elaborated. Empirical research which was conducted on the management of the national parks and tourist boards of selected cities established a difference in compliance of each destination with all GSTC criteria. In the data processing and analysis of the research, the responses of nature based and urban destinations were also compared. Also, based on results the recommendations were given on what all selected destinations should work on if they want to base their management of the destination on the concepts of sustainability. The results of this research can be used by all destinations in the sample, i.e. all other destinations that want to compare the success of implementation of sustainability with some of the leading Croatian tourist destinations.

Education for sustainable development in universities provides the university’s community (i.e. students, administrative and academic staff) with the skills and capabilities needed to contribute to the achievement of sustainable development. Education for sustainable development has been introduced into curricula, research, outreach activities and campus operations. Several tools exist nowadays to assess this incorporation. Most of them are focused on the environmental aspect of campus operations and within academic issues but do not consider the entire system. This research aimed to propose an integration of sustainability throughout the university as a system, considering existing tools and frameworks, and proving the theoretical proposal in an empirical context. Thus, this paper focuses on sustainability from a whole-institution perspective, analysing the university as a system conformed of two subsystems, the academic and the administrative. The research used a sequential, mixed-method. The quantitative phase undertook a literature review using bibliometric and content analysis, followed by a qualitative phase using the thematic analysis method to develop the University Sustainability concept. The University Sustainability analysis integrated education for sustainable development aspects for the academic subsystem and the corporate sustainability paradigm for the administrative subsystem. Consequently, a sustainability measurement scale for the University Sustainability concept was developed and proved using the exploratory factor analysis. The survey was applied to directors, academic and administrative staff, and under and post-graduate students of two private universities located in Medellin, Colombia. A total of 1799 useable responses were collected and analysed with SPSS software. The analysis’ outcome exposed all factors loaded above 0.40, and overall, the alpha coefficient was 0.930. Results revealed the reliability and validity of the instrument. Hence, the University Sustainability concept was validated, and its measurement scale is suitable to be used in assessing the sustainability of universities holistically. The evidence from the studied universities shows the relevance of corporate sustainability and social issues in the developed University Sustainability concept.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify, model, analyze and prioritize the barriers in implementing sustainable practices in rubber products manufacturing industry in Kerala, a state in South India. This research provides a more reliable quantitative measure of association of the barriers in the implementation of sustainable practices in the rubber products manufacturing sector. Design/methodology/approach Interpretive structural modeling (ISM) is used to develop the hierarchical relationships among the barriers in the implementation of sustainable supply chain practices in the rubber products manufacturing sector. The hierarchical structure among the barriers is framed using the experts’ opinion. Cross-impact matrix multiplication applied to the classification (MICMAC) analysis is integrated with the output of ISM to classify the barriers into different categories based on the driving power and the dependence power. The driving power and the dependence power of the barriers obtained from ISM constitute two criteria for prioritizing the barriers. The change management required is considered as the third criterion. The fuzzy-analytic hierarchy process (F-AHP) methodology is adopted to prioritize the barriers based on these three criteria. Findings The hierarchical relationship obtained through ISM methodology shows that lack of government initiatives and lack of benchmark on sustainability measurement in Indian conditions are the major barriers in implementing sustainable practices in the rubber products manufacturing sector. These barriers lead to the lack of management commitment for the implementation of sustainable practices in the organizations under study. The prioritization obtained through the F-AHP method suggests that lack of top-level management commitment, lack of motivation, lack of government initiatives and high initial cost of implementation are some of the major barriers in implementing sustainable practices in the organizations. Research limitations/implications In the application of the ISM methodology, the contextual relationship between the barriers specified by the experts and their preferences may involve bias. Another limitation of this research is that the modeling and prioritization of the barriers are executed based on the opinion of experts from rubber product manufacturing companies in one state only. Originality/value To the best knowledge of the authors, this research is the first study on the identification and prioritization of the barriers in sustainable supply chain implementation in the rubber products manufacturing sector. Modeling the inter-relationship among the barriers using ISM technique and prioritizing the barriers using F-AHP are the novel features of the contributions of this work.

Nowadays sustainability improvement is one of the most important duties of each system and organization. A sustainable system first needs to measure the current condition of sustainability precisely and then tends to apply modifications for the sake of enhancing the quality of performance. Regarding the existence of unreliability in data, and while sustainability measurement always deals with calculations, practitioners and experts are not commonly able to obtain an accurate status for sustainability in associated systems. In light of this exigency, the fuzzy sets have been incorporated with sustainability evaluations in several studies to handle uncertainty and vagueness conditions. Meanwhile, the reliability of the data was still intact. This study aims at satisfying this constraint by adopting the concept of Z-numbers through sustainability appraisals. By using the proposed model, the unreliable data can be transformed into possibilistic fuzzy sets to remove the mathematical sophistications. The Z-number-based approach also can be transferred into conventional fuzzy sets when experts are fully confident about deterministic inputs. The proposed model then is applied to a freight transportation sustainability evaluation as an illustrative case to elucidate the application of the proposed model in real-world cases. The elaborated approach is validated by both conventional fuzzy sets and crisp approach, and the superiority of the model is demonstrated by more reasonable results and wide applications. Note that this approach can be used as a benchmark for evaluating sustainability in diverse systems in light of time.

This study presents a new optimization model for quantitative sustainability measurement in net present value estimation process of corporate investments. Proposed model presents an innovative perspective for the transformation of the logic behind traditional investment project selection practices to the sustainable project selection in corporations. By using the proposed model, it is possible that investors' can find positive sustainability trade‐offs without harming returns on investment. A case study is presented to illustrate the applicability of the proposed model in project selection decision‐making processes. Expected net present value is employed to calculate the return of the project investment for project selection decision‐stage. In order to identify stakeholder value trade‐off gaps, proposed model with sustainability involvement is evaluated in contrast to the traditional net value method estimations of the model. Based on optimization results, comparative analysis of proposed sustainability cost involvement in net present value estimation with traditional net present value estimation in project selection practices restore positive trade‐offs verifying the efficiency of proposed methodology.

Along with increases in the aging population and the number of elderly facilities, the existing unsustainable patterns of building operations have caused a series of space-related problems such as space waste, increasing operational costs and poor living environment. An effective method to resolve these problems is sustainable space management (SSM), which is a particularly good fit for nonprofit elderly facilities with limited capital budgets. However, one critical barrier to SSM is the lack of a sustainability measurement model in recent studies and practices. To overcome this barrier, this paper first develops a conceptual sustainability framework with five elements, or sustainability dimensions (SDs): facility characteristics, facility management organization, economic sustainability, environmental sustainability and social sustainability. Afterwards, an initial list of indicators evaluating the sustainability of space management is identified through a literature review and interviews with experts. Meanwhile, several hypothesized relationships among the five SDs are proposed based on experience and prior studies. A questionnaire survey to collect raw data regarding stakeholders' views of China's elderly facilities is conducted to identify the significance of these sustainability indicators (SIs). Furthermore, a structural equation modeling analysis comprising confirmatory factor analysis and path analysis is conducted to examine the measurement model as well as the proposed hypotheses. Based on a discussion of the key SIs (KSIs), significant paths for driving sustainability in space management within elderly facilities are proposed. The findings will fill the blind spot that facility managers experience when practicing daily space management to promote sustainability.

It has been long recognized that environmental matters are important to the survival of manufacturing companies. Yet manufacturing companies continue to degrade the environment, over exploit natural resources and generate unmanageable amount of wastes. Manufacturing is not just about financial returns, but it should also be conscious of the long-term impacts on living standards of both present and future generations. The purpose of this paper is to develop a sustainability index to quantify the impact of Mauritian manufacturing activities on the environment. This research is an attempt to stimulate manufacturing companies in Mauritius to report their organization’s sustainability via an index that shall aid in driving both profits and growth. It reviews the main social, economic and environmental issues affecting manufacturing companies and provides a Sustainability Index Model (SIM) that can be used as a sustainability performance measurement indicator, helping in the mitigation of perennial business challenges. The derived sustainability index, that combines the principal sustainable indicators quoted in the literature, has been used as a single decision-making tool for assisting manufacturing companies realize sustainable development goals. A sample of 30 large manufacturing companies in Mauritius were used to validate the sustainability index model. The study reveals an index with 9 environmental, 4 economic and 2 social indicators which were pertinent in sustainability measurement, with varying degree of importance, within the Mauritian manufacturing context.

In recent times we have witnessed proliferation of indicators and models for measuring sustainability. This reveals the lack of common and shared scientific paradigm/common framework from which to confront the issue of quantitatively assessing the sustainability of our society. With the aim of moving forward the definition of such common framework, in this article we explain an easy formal methodology for designing urban sustainability indicators based on Fuzzy Logic / Fuzzy Sets Theory. The interest of this methodology is threefold: • Firstly, formal procedures enable easier testing, a most fundamental issue forgotten in many current proposals of sustainability indicators. • Secondly, a formal procedure is easily understandable and can become a common language allowing shared use of the indicators and facilitating their continuous improvement. • And thirdly, fuzzy logic is widely used in computing and artificial intelligence, thus facilitating the progressive automation of our sustainability monitoring models.
