15. Synchrotron-based X-ray spectromicroscopy used for the study of an atypical micrometric pigment in 16th century paintings

Abstract

Griinewald is a famous German painter of the 16th century, whose celebrity is associated with his unique skill in handling colors. This article presents the analysis of materials used to render a metallic aspect in the Isenhein Altarpiece and the Basel's Crucifixion. Such samples are challenging objects for microanalysis due to both chemical and physical complexity. Their study by synchrotron-based X-ray microscopy techniques was made possible thanks to recent developments carded out at the ID21 beam line (European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, ESRF). A submicron X-ray fluorescence probe revealed the main presence of lead, sulfur, antimony, and calcium. The fluorescence-line interferences (in particular K-lines of sulfur with M-lines of lead, and K-lines of calcium with L-lines of antimony) were resolved with the fitting program, PyMCA. 2D-mapping highlighted the presence of micrometer grains of sulfur and antimony into a lead matrix. XANES measurements were performed at both the sulfur K-edge and the antimony L-edge to refine information from an atomic to a molecular level. Beam stability was a key point in this study to selectively probe micrometer pigment grains, dispersed in the lead matrix. They confirm that the grains are made of stibnite (antimony sulfide), a very atypical pigment. Chemical mapping of sulfides is perfectly correlated with antimony mapping and provides a clear visualization of the stibnite pigments, in addition to their identification. Besides its artistic relevancy, this work aims at illustrating developments of synchrotron X-ray microprobe methods for the chemical characterization and observation of complex and micrometer-scale materials.

Abstract

High-efficiency, high-contrast gold and nickel multistep Fresnel zone plates were fabricated using electron beam lithography. Maximum efficiency of 55% was achieved for the nickel plate at 7 keV. The lenses also have low background signal and unwanted diffraction orders are effectively reduced. They could be of use in techniques such as microscopy, micro-fluorescence and micro-diffraction.

Abstract

This letter reports on the site configuration of implanted Mn cations in ZnO. The samples studied were obtained by means of ion implantation in m-plane ZnO single crystals. Synchrotron radiation based fluorescence shows no contamination during the implantation process. The results of micro-x-ray absorption spectroscopy indicate that Mn ions are located in substitutional sites without detectable traces of secondary phases. The postgrowth thermal annealing in O2 atmosphere induces a change in the coordination of a large amount of Mn cations, corresponding to α-Mn2O3. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The application of synchrotron radiation based high-resolution grazing-emission x-ray fluorescence (GEXRF) method to measure low-level impurities on silicon wafers is reported. The capability of the high-resolution GEXRF method to perform surface-sensitive elemental mappings with a lateral resolution of several tens of micrometers is also demonstrated.

37. Wavelength-dispersive spectrometer for X-ray microfluorescence analysis at the X-ray microscopy beamline ID21 (ESRF)

Abstract

The development of a wavelength-dispersive spectrometer for microfluorescence analysis at the X-ray Microscopy ID21 beamline of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) is reported. The spectrometer is based on a polycapillary optic for X-ray fluorescence collection and is operated in a flat-crystal geometry. The design considerations as well as operation characteristics of the spectrometer are presented. The achieved performances, in particular the energy resolution, are compared with the results of Monte Carlo simulations. Further improvement in the energy resolution, down to ~eV range, by employing a double-crystal geometry is examined. Finally, examples of applications requiring both spatial and spectral resolutions are presented.

38. Observation of ultralow-level Al impurities on a silicon surface by high-resolution grazing emission x-ray fluorescence excited by synchrotron radiation

Abstract

We demonstrate that ultralow-level Al impurities on a silicon surface can be measured by using the high-resolution grazing emission x-ray fluorescence (GEXRF) technique combined with synchrotron-radiation excitation. An Al-impurity level of about 10¹² atoms/cm² was reached by observing the Al Kα x-ray fluorescence in the resonant Raman-scattering background-“free” regime by choosing an appropriate beam energy below the Si K absorption edge. Present results show that by combining the GEXRF method with the vapor phase decomposition technique the 10⁷ atoms/cm² level can be reached for Al detection on silicon. Finally, we found that the high-resolution GEXRF technique is a sensitive tool to study the morphology of surface nanostructures.

Abstract

A new figuring station was designed and installed at the ESRF beamline BM05. It allows the figuring of mirrors within an iterative process combining the advantage of online metrology with dry etching. The complete process takes place under a vacuum environment to minimize surface contamination while non-contact surfacing tools open up the possibility of performing at-wavelength metrology and eliminating placement errors. The aim is to produce mirrors whose slopes do not deviate from the stigmatic profile by more than 0.1 µrad rms while keeping surface roughness in the acceptable limit of 0.1-0.2 nm rms. The desired elliptical mirror surface shape can be achieved in a few iterations in about a one day time span.
