SUMMARYAt high northern latitudes, growing seasons are short with long days. In these conditions, tillering is an unwanted trait in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), because the grains on tillers develop later than those on the main stem and are often harvested before they are fully mature, leading to reductions in overall quality. Hence, the uniculm growth habit has been considered an interesting option for boreal barley production. The aim of the present study was to determine the differences in the yield formation of conventional tillering and uniculm barley, using two pairs of near-isogenic lines and two controls. Uniculm and conventional tillering barley were grown in three experiments conducted at Suitia Experimental Farm, University Helsinki, Finland during 1999–2001. Samples were collected frequently to monitor the biomass and leaf area accumulation. Water-soluble carbohydrate content was analysed at anthesis and at maturity in different plant parts. At maturity, the numbers of spikes/plant and grains/spike were calculated and grain yield weighed. The grain yield of the uniculm barleys was stable over these growing seasons, but it was only half that of the conventional barley cultivars due to the absence of spike-bearing tillers, lower spike grain number and spike weight. In addition, the ability to transport photosynthesized carbohydrates to grains may have been reduced. Thus, it seems that uniculm barleys do not provide further improvement in barley yield.

Suomessa sokerijuurikasta viljellään juurikas-vilja -viljelykierrossa tai ilman viljelykiertoa. Karjattomilla tiloilla nurmen sijoittaminen viljelykiertoon koetaan ongelmaksi. Ratkaisuna voisi olla nurmikierron järjestäminen viherlannoitusnurmen avulla. Kokeen tavoitteena oli selvittää yksivuotisen timotei-apila –nurmen viherlannoitusvaikutusta sokerijuurikkaan sadon määrään ja sen laatuun sekä maan kasvukuntoon. Viherlannoitusnurmi oli perustettu vuonna 2007 Tenholaan tilakokeena. Verranteena toimi tavallisessa viljelyssä ollut lohko, jossa edellisvuonna oli kasvanut mallasohra. Molemmat koelohkot jaettiin kahteen kaistaan, joille annettiin kylvön yhteydessä joko 90 kg N/ha tai 120 kg N/ha. Kaistoista tehtiin taimettumis- ja peittävyyshavainnnot sekä seurattiin typen riittävyyttä lehtivihreämittauksilla. Lisäksi maan kuntoa arvioitiin kuoppatestin avulla sekä mittaamalla pintamaan vedenjohtavuus. Viherlannoituksen vaikutusta tuholaisvioituksiin havainnoitiin eri siemenkäsittelyillä. Kasvustosta havainnoitiin Ramularia- lehtilaikkutaudin vioitusmäärä. Juurisadon määrä ja sokeri-, aminotyppi-, kalium- ja natriumpitoisuus sekä saanto-% määritettiin lopullisesta sadosta. Taimettuminen oli nopeampaa ja tasaisempaa viherlannoituslohkolla kuin tavallisella lohkolla samoin kuin myös kasvuston peittävyys oli suurempi. SPAD-arvot olivat viherlannoituslohkolla koko kasvukauden korkeammat kuin ilman viherlannoitusta olleella lohkolla. Mineraalitypen määrä kasvukaudella oli viherlannoituslohkolla 70 kg/ha ja tavallisella 56 kg/ha. Lehtivihreämittaustuloksista ja liukoisen typen pitoisuudesta voidaan päätellä, että viherlannoitus lisäsi kasveille käyttökelpoisen typen määrää kasvukauden aikana. Viherlannoitus tuotti alhaisemmalla typpilannoituksella 4500 kg/ha ja korkeammalla typpilannoituksella 9800 kg/ha korkeammman juurisadon kuin tavallinen lannoitus. Ramularia lehtilaikkutautia esiintyi huomattavasti vähemmän viherlannoituslohkolla. Tuloksista voidaan päätellä, että yksivuotinen viherlannoitus soveltuu hyvin sokerijuurikkaan viljelykiertoon ja se hyötyy viherlannoituksesta. Juurikkaalla saadaan merkittävä sadonlisäys, kun maan typpitaloutta parannetaan viherlannoitusnurmella. Toisaaltaan viherlannoituksella on edullinen vaikutus maan kasvukuntoon. Ramularian torjunnan tarve vähenee.

Lannan levitys sokerijuurikasmaille on ongelmallista aikaisesta kylvöstä ja myöhäisestä sadonkorjuusta johtuen, jolloin kasvukauden ulkopuolisina levitysajankohtina maa on usein märkää ja helposti tiivistyvää. Levittämällä lanta kasvukauden aikana, voidaan mahdollisesti vähentää maan tiivistymistä ja samalla vältetään ravinteiden talviaikainen huuhtoutuminen syksyllä levitetystä lannasta. Lisäksi tehostamalla lannan hyödyntämistä, voidaan vähentää väkilannoitteiden käyttöä ja niiden ostosta aiheutuvia kustannuksia.Juurikkaan kasvukausi on pitkä ja sen ravinteiden otto on suurimmillaan heinäkuussa. Siten se pystyy hyödyntämään tehokkaasti kasvukaudella levitetyn lietelannan ravinteet. Kasvukaudella 2009 toteutetussa kokeilussa peltolohkon kahta koekaistaa lannoitettiin eri tavoin. Väkilannoitekaista sai N- ja K-lannoitteina 120 kg N ha-1 ja 30 kg k ha-1 sekä lietelantakaista N-lannoitteena ja lietelantana 66 kg N ha-1, 12 kg P ha-1 ja 22 kg K ha-1. Lietteen levitystä kokeiltiin ensiksi sijoittavalla levityslaitteistolla, mutta kasvuston vioittumisen vuoksi levitysmenetelmä vaihdettiin letkulevitystä vastaavaksi.Keväällä lohkolta otettiin maanäytteet viljavuusanalyysiä varten. Juurikkaan taimettumista seurattiin taimilaskennan avulla. Kasvuston lehtivihreän määrää arvioitiin SPAD-mittarilla kolme kertaa kasvukauden aikana. Lietevaunun vaikutusta maan tiivistymiseen (35 cm) tarkasteltiin penetrometrillä. Juurisadon määrä, juurikkaan keskipaino sekä sadon sokeri-, aminotyppi-, kalium- ja natriumpitoisuudet määritettiin nostetusta sadosta.Kenttähavaintojen perusteella todettiin, ettei käytetty sijoittava levityskalusto sovellu lannan levittämiseen juurikaskasvustoon. Sijoittava kalusto vioitti juurikaskasvustoa huomattavasti, kun kaluston vannasväli oli 17 cm ja juurikkaan riviväli 45 cm. Letkulevityksessä lanta puolestaan imeytyi hyvin maahan, eikä kasvusto likaantunut merkittävästi. Kesäkuun loppupuoli osoittautui hyväksi ajankohdaksi toimenpiteelle, sillä kasvusto on vielä avointa ja voi toipua tallauksesta.Maa oli tiiviimpää lietevaunun renkaan urassa kuin sen vieressä, mikä osittain johtunee poikkeuksellisen märistä levitysolosuhteista. Lietelantakaistan alhaisempi typen lannoitusmäärä näkyi juurikkaiden aminotyppipitoisuudessa, joka oli lietelantakaistalla alhaisempi kuin väkilannoitekaistalla. Kasvukauden aikana mitatut SPAD-tulokset tukevat tulosta. Väkilannoitekaistan sato kehittyi hyväksi ilman fosforilannoitustakin.Levityskalustoa kehittämällä ja ajouria käyttämällä kasvukauden aikaisen lannanlevityksen aiheuttamaa kasvuston vioittumista voitaisiin mahdollisesti vähentää. Lietteen levityksen siirtäminen kasvukaudelle ei automaattisesti poista tiivistymisriskiä, vaan maan kosteustilaan tukee edelleen kiinnittää huomiota. Hyvä keino tiivistymisriskin pienentämiseksi on suosia mahdollisimman kevyttä levityskalustoa.

Water and nitrogen (N) availability are the main factors influencing crop growth globally. Poorly distributed or insufficient water for crop growth requirements decreases yields in drought-prone areas such as those with a Mediterranean type environment. Cereal grain yield is a complex trait of interrelated components: plants per unit land area, spikes per plant, spikelets per spike, grains per spikelet, and single grain weight (SGW). The effect of water limitation and timing on development of yield components was studied in detail at the spike level in spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivar Amaretto. An experiment with three watering treatments (control watering, CONT; drought prior to pollination, DR1 and terminal drought, DR2) was arranged in a large greenhouse (20 m × 30 m), with the use of standard field-trial machinery. Automated blackout curtains were used to control day length, which was set to correspond to that at 40°N. With watering treatments, two N application rates (60 and 120 kg N ha−1) were used to investigate the N effect and potential watering × N interaction on yield formation and realisation. The water deficit effect exceeded the effect of N on fertile floret and grain number and SGW. DR1 strongly reduced the number of fertile florets and grains, whereas terminal drought reduced the number of grains per spike. Resuming the watering at pollination markedly enhanced photosynthesis, and hence grain filling capacity, resulting in the highest SGW in DR1. Enhancement in availability of key resources was associated with reduced rate of fertile floret and grain abortion, which resulted in higher grain to fertile floret ratio in DR1. Spikelets in the mid-section of the spike dominated yield formation in all treatments. In DR1 this was especially emphasised as 53% of the grain yield was produced in spikelets 4–6, whereas in DR2 and CONT this was 45 and 41%, respectively. Grains in proximal position in the spikelets produced about 80% of the spike grain yield, the proportion being slightly higher in stressed plants and plants receiving 60 kg N. No marked N × water deficit treatment interaction occurred for any of the measured parameters.

Long days partially depress tiller growth of spring cereals. In this study we characterised and quantified growing conditions and cultivar-induced variation in tiller traits and contribution of tillers to grain yield. Experiments were done at two locations in southern Finland, incorporating two nitrogen fertiliser application rates (80 and 120 kg N ha−1) and 12 two-row barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), 10 six-row barley, ten oat (Avena sativa L.) and 11 wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars. Spring cereal species differed significantly in their tillering: two-row barley was superior compared with other spring cereals, with the highest number and growth capacity of tillers and head-bearing tillers. Grain yield produced by tillers was, however, always modest compared with that of main shoots, ranging from 13% and 15% in oat and wheat to 20% in six-row barley and 64% in two-row barley. Cultivar and growing condition-induced differences were marked in tiller traits, but tillers were never able to out-yield the main shoot. This is likely to be emphasised by standard use of high seeding rates. Tillers are dominated by the main shoot under long day conditions at high latitudes, and tiller yield potential remains clearly underutilised even under conditions favouring growth.

The ideotype of a crop is a model of a plant community where all necessary and beneficial traits for crop performance in a particular environment are combined. It is important to consider the environment when developing an ideotype since climatic, edaphic and agronomic features of the target region have a major role in determining crop performance. New technologies, high yielding cultivars, irrigation and water management, plant protection materials and more skilful farm management practices have increased yields and yield potentials on cereals in Finland as in many other countries. In this paper we aim to summarize traits which would be useful from the farmers’ perspective. The most important trait is increased early vigour of spring cereals, including faster rate of early development and increased leaf area to improve both the resource capture of the canopy and water use efficiency. Introduction of dwarfing genes would improve lodging resistance and harvest index due to improved partitioning of dry matter into grains whereas longer coleoptiles would improve emergence and seedling establishment. Improved ability of crops to utilize stem reserves during grain filling would increase resistance against environmental stresses. All of these traits would also increase the competitive ability of the plant against weeds as well as competition within the crop canopy and are already available from non-adapted germplasm of the various spring cereal species., Ideotyypillä tarkoitetaan kasvustoa, jossa yhdistyvätkaikki tarvittavat ja hyödylliset ominaisuudet hyvälaatuisen ja korkean sadon tuottamiseksi tietyssä kasvuympäristössä. Kasvuympäristön huomioiminen on erityisen tärkeätä ideotyyppiä hahmoteltaessa, sillä ilmastolla sekä edafisilla ja agronomisilla tekijöillä on keskeisin rooli kasvuston menestymisessä. Uudet viljelymenetelmät, ravinteet, satoisat lajikkeet, kastelu, kasvinsuojeluaineet sekä huolellinen viljelytoimien suunnittelu ja toteutus ovat parantaneet kevätviljojen satoja niin Suomessa kuin muuallakin maailmassa. Lajikkeita on kuitenkin kehitettävä edelleen erityisesti kasvinsuojeluaineiden ja typen käytön aiheuttaman ympäristökuormituksen vuoksi. Tarkastelemme tässä artikkelissa ominaisuuksia, jotka vaikuttavat keskeisesti elinvoimaisen ja hyvän kasvuston kehittymiseen ja menestymiseen ja samalla mahdollistavat panosten käytön vähentämistä kasvintuotannossa. Tarkastelun kohteena ovat siten kasvuston nopea ja elinvoimainen alkukehitys, sivuversojen muodostuminen, kääpiö- ja puolikääpiölajikkeet, veden- ja typenkäytön tehokkuus, korsivälivarastot sekä kasvuston kilpailukyky. Elinvoimainen kasvusto peittää maan nopeasti, mikä lisää kasvuston kilpailukykyä rikkakasveja vastaan ja samalla parantaa vedenkäytön tehokkuutta ja säästää maan vesivaroja. Kääpiömuotoja hyödyntämällä voidaan paitsi vähentää lakoutumista myös tehostaa hiiliyhdisteiden jakautumista kehittyviin jyviin korsien ja juurien sijaan. Keskittämällä sivuversojen muodostuminen yhteen tai kahteen tähkälliseen tai röyhylliseen sivuversoon voidaan edelleen tehostaa yhteyttämistuotteiden jakautumista sekä vedenkäyttöä. Erityistä huomiota tulisi kiinnittää kasvien kykyyn hyödyntää korsivälivarastoja jyväntäyttymisjakson aikana, koska sääolot ovat Suomessa usein hyvin vaihtelevat. Korsivälivarastoja hyödyntämällä jyväntäyttymistä voidaan jatkaa keskeytyksettä lähes sääoloista riippumatta. Kun kiinnitetään huomiota lajikkeiden valintaan ja viljelymenetelmiin, satotasoja ja keskisatoja on mahdollista nostaa Suomessa tulevaisuudessakin.

SUMMARYIncreased harvest index (HI) has been one of the principal factors contributing to genetic yield improvements in spring barley (Hordeum vulgareL.), oat (Avena sativaL.) and wheat (Triticum aestivumL.) cultivars. Although high HI demonstrates high-yielding ability when cultivars are compared, it can also indicate challenges to yield formation when comparisons are made across differing growing conditions. The present study was designed to investigate variation in HI among modern cereal cultivars relative to that brought about by a northern environment, to assess whether HI still explains the majority of the differences in grain yield when only modern cereal cultivars are compared, and to monitor key traits contributing to HI. Stability of HI was also investigated with reference to the role of tillers. Twelve experiments (3 years, two locations, two nitrogen fertilizer regimes) were carried out in southern Finland to evaluate 12 two-row spring barley, 10 six-row barley, 10 oat and 11 wheat cultivars. In addition to HI, days to heading and maturity, length of grain filling period, grain yield, test weight and 13 traits characterizing plant stand structure were measured and analysed with principal component analysis (PCA) to detect traits associated with HI and those contributing to stability of HI. Although only modern cereals were studied, differences among cultivars were significant both in mean HI and stability of HI, and HI was associated with short plant stature in all modern cereal species. Also, single grain weight was associated with HI in all species. Differences between, but not within, species in HI were partly attributable to differences in tiller performance. Grain yield was associated closely with HI except in two-row barley. It may be possible to further increase HI of wheat, as it still was relatively low. High HI did, however, not indicate the degree of success in yield determination when environments are compared.

Since northern European agricultural practices are likely to go toward systems with lower inputs of N fertilizers, it is desirable to develop cultivars with increased yield potential associated with higher nitrogen use efficiency (NUE). This study determined the extent of variation in NUE-related parameters, specifying the primary traits contributing to the difference in nitrogen remobilization efficiency (NRE) on four spring cereal crops, two- and six-row barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), oat (Avena sativa L.), and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Field experiments were conducted in Finland during 2001, 2002, and 2003 under two N regimes (0 and 90 kg N ha -1 ). Wheat had relatively high N content at maturity even though NUE was low, whereas oat and barley had higher NUE. A comparison of nitrogen harvest index (NHI) and NRE revealed that both were low for wheat, linking this with high N uptake after anthesis, suggesting that in wheat the proportion of the assimilated N used immediately in the developing grain is greater than in barley and oat. There was no strong N translocation from vegetative parts of the main shoots in wheat, which exhibited higher competition for N between vegetative and reproductive organs. Plant breeders could use these findings to their advantage in breeding spring cereal crops that not only produce high yield but also efficiently use available N in northern growing conditions.

The typical features of high latitude growing seasons, particularly the short and intensive growth period and intense solar radiation during early growth, limit crop development and yield formation. A field study was conducted over two years to assess the differences between old and modern spring cereal cultivars in radiation-use efficiency (RUE), to characterise the traits contributing to the differences and to gauge the effect of nitrogen on the traits. Field experiments were conducted with wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and oat (Avena sativa L.) under two nitrogen regimes (90 kg N ha−1 and control with 0 kg N ha−1). RUE was reduced at 0 kg N ha−1. Pre-heading RUE was not influenced by year, but post-heading RUE was, with values being either higher or nearly the same in comparison with pre-heading values. RUE values for barley, wheat and oat were similar to those reported elsewhere. Old two- and six-row barley cultivars had higher pre-heading RUE than modern cultivars. After heading, under decreasing light levels biomass accumulation was high due to the high RUE values. Old oat and six-row barley cultivars had higher post-heading RUE than modern cultivars. In intensive northern growing conditions, RUE varied seasonally and increased at increasing N application rate.

Spring cultivars of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), oat (Avena sativa L.), and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) are the most important crops in Finnish agricultural systems. The increasing need to reduce pollution from N fertilizer is concomitantly strengthening the importance of improving the understanding of nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) of these crops. The aim of this work was to study the differences in NUE, defined as the crop's ability to produce yield with one available N unit, among spring cereal cultivars, and to determine the achievements of plant breeding in NUE under northern European growing conditions. Field experiments were conducted in Finland during 2003 and 2004. Samples from matured plants of 17 to 18 cultivars of each of the three cereal species released between 1909 and 2002 were studied. There were no clear differences in NUE among modern spring cultivars. However, there were cultivar differences within species and significant NUE improvements on wheat and particularly for oat across time. There was no clear trend of NUE and year of release of cultivars in two-row spring barley, probably because breeding for malting barley involves consistent selection for low-protein cultivars. The study revealed that most breeding effects on NUE were associated with changes in nitrogen uptake efficiency (UPE).

The Finnish growing season is particularly short, with an intensive growth period, unfavourable rainfall distribution and frequently occurring fluctuations in climate that affect crop growth and yield formation. A three-year study was conducted in the field to determine the contribution of alterations in canopy structure, tillering and stem elongation among dwarf (D), semidwarf (SD) and tall (T) oat (Avena sativa L.) lines to yield formation. Yield components, leaf characteristics and straw traits were measured from six oat lines (D lines Pal and Grane, SD lines Hja 76416 and Salo, and T lines Veli and Jalostettu maatiainen) separately on the main shoot and tillers. Results indicated that long leaf area duration and high leaf area index were associated with increased grain yield probably due to more persistent and active assimilation. Also, higher number of leaves increased the grain yield. Higher peduncle, straw and node weights associating with increased grain yield may result from more abundant assimilate reserves; however, the longer the straw and peduncle, the lower the grain yield, which may result from increased lodging of SD and T lines. The traits contributing most to the grain yield varied greatly from year to year. It is concluded that no single dominant trait determined grain yield, since yield is a product of several different traits. SD lines seemed to be most promising for further breeding programs on the basis of their growth pattern and yielding ability., Kasvien kasvua ja sadontuottoa rajoittaa Suomessalyhyt ja nopeatempoinen kasvukausi, jolle on tyypillistä vaihteleva säätila ja sateiden epäedullinen painottuminen syksyyn. Kolmevuotisessa peltokokeessa tutkittiin eroja kääpiö-, ja puolikääpiökaurojen sekä pitkäkortisten lajikkeiden kasvustorakenteessa, sivuversojen tuotossa ja korrenkasvussa sekä arvioitiin näiden merkitystä sadonmuodostukseen. Kuuden kauralinjan pääversoista ja sivuversoista mitattiin satokomponentit sekä lehdistörakennetta ja kortta kuvaavia ominaisuuksia. Saatujen tulosten perusteella kääpiöt versoivat enemmän, mutta niiden sadontuottokyky ei parantunut versontakyvyn myötä. Määritetyistä ominaisuuksista korkeaan satoon olivat yhteydessä pitkään yhteyttämiskykyisenä säilyvä kasvusto ja suuri lehtialaindeksi, mikä saattaa johtua pitempään jatkuvasta tehokkaasta yhteyttämisestä. Myös suuri lehtilukumäärä lisäsi satoa. Kääpiöillä oli yleensä hieman vähemmän lehtiä kuin pitkäkortisilla lajikkeilla ja erityisesti Pal-lajikkeella epätyydyttävä kasvustorakenne. Hyvä sadontuottokyky oli yhteydessä painavampaan ylimpään nivelväliin, korteen ja solmuihin, mikä saattaa johtua siitä, että niissä oli enemmän välivarastoituja yhdisteitä, joita voitiin hyödyntää jyväntäyttymiseen. Pitkä korsi ja ylin nivelväli näyttivät kuitenkin olevan yhteydessä alhaiseen satoon johtuen oletettavasti lakoutumisalttiuden lisääntymisestä. Askeltava regressioanalyysi osoitti kuitenkin, että vuosittaiset vaihtelut olivat huomattavia ominaisuuksissa, jotka selittivät sadossa ilmenneitä vaihteluita. Siksi yksittäisiä, kasvuoloista riippumattomia, sadontuottoa hallitsevia ominaisuuksia ei voitu luonnehtia.

Aspects of crop physiology and agronomy of spring rye were evaluated at Viikki Experimental Farm, University of Helsinki in 1996-1998 to get baseline information on its potential as a novel cereal crop in southern Finland.The German spring rye cultivar Ovid was fertilized with 80 kg N ha-1. Seeding rates were 300,500 and 700 viable seeds m-2. Chlormequat chloride (CCC)was sprayed at the two-node stage of the main shoot and its effects on lodging and yield formation were studied. Various traits were assessed that characterised tiller and main shoot growth and productivity, growth duration and plant stand structure.Spring rye responded differently over years and among CCC treatments. CCC increased grain yield by about 200 kg ha -1 compared with the control.Spring rye has long straw (130-140 cm)and tended to lodge under heavy rainfall.Thus,grain yield was maximum (ca. 5200 kg ha -1 in 1997)when rainfall was minimum.Partly because high seeding rates enhanced lodging,no seeding rate effects on grain yield were recorded.At 300 seeds m-2, yield formation of both main shoot and tillers was enhanced to compensate for the reduced number of main shoots m-2. Ripening was not delayed at low seeding rates.Grain and hectolitre weights were not affected by seeding rate. Thus,spring rye is a potential crop for Finland if low seeding rates are used., Kolmivuotisessa kokeessa tutkittiin kylvötiheyden jakasvunsääteiden vaikutusta kevätrukiin satoon Etelä-Suomen kasvuoloissa.Kokeet järjestettiin Helsingin yliopiston Viikin koetilalla.Kylvö tiheydet olivat kokeessa 300,500 tai 700 itävää siementä neliö metrillä, ja kasvustot joko käsiteltiin kasvunsääteellä [klor-mekvattikloridi(CCC)] tai ei.. Tutkittu saksalainen kevätruislajike Ovid oli hyvin pitkä kortinen ja altis lakoontumaan.CCC-käsittely lyhensi kortta ja vähensi lakoontumista vuosina, jolloin runsas sade ei aiheuttanut kasvustojen lähes täydellistä lakoontumista. Keskimäärin CCC-käsittely paransi satoa 200 kg ha -1.Paras kevätruissato (5200 kg ha -1 )saatiin normaalia lämpimämpänä ja vähä sateisempana kasvukautena (1997),vaikka tähkälle tulo oli muihin vuosiin verrattuna enimmillään jopa 12 päivää ja jyväntäyttymisaika kuusi päivää lyhyempi. Kylvö tiheys ei vaikuttanut sadon määrään,vaikka eri kylvö tiheyksillä kasvusto olikin hyvin erilainen. Mitä alhaisempi kylvötiheys,sitä voimakkaammin kasvusto versoi ja sitä enemmän versoista saatiin satoa,mutta myös pääverson sato parani olennaisesti alhaista kylvösiemenmäärää käytettäessä.Tutkimustemme perusteella kevätruista ei ole syytä kylvää tiheämpään kuin 300 siementä neliö metrille,koska pitkä kortisena kevätruis on hyvin laonaltis,ja koska versominen kompensoi muita kevätviljoja paremmin harvan kylvön ilman,että kasvusto tuleentuisi epätasaisesti.

Naked oat grain, which is free from lemma and palea, has high nutritional quality, but the unprotected grain is prone to mechanical damages caused by combine harvesting. Naked oats were grown for 3 years in southern Finland, at Viikki Experimental Farm, University of Helsinki (60° 13′N) to produce seed material for laboratory tests that evaluated: (1) genotypic differences of naked oat in sensitivity to damage during harvesting at grain moisture varying from c. 10% up to 50%, (2) the effect of mechanical damage on germination and grain vigour, and (3) grain characteristics contributing to susceptibility to reduced grain viability. In 1997, one naked (Rhiannon) and husked oat cultivar (Salo) were harvested, and in 1998–1999 additional four naked cultivars (Bullion, Lisbeth, Neon, SW 95926) were included. One large plot (14 m×10 m) was sown per cultivar. Two sowing times were used. Fully ripened grains were combine harvested on several occasions for each plot to obtain differences in grain moisture at harvest. Simultaneously, panicle samples were collected, dried and threshed by hand (controls). Grain moisture at each sampling and harvesting was monitored. About 3 months after harvesting, germination tests on blotting paper were carried out. Proportions of normally developed seedlings, seedlings lacking either radicle or hypocotyl, damaged coleoptiles, dead grains and lethally fungus-infected grains were recorded from combine harvested and hand threshed samples on different cultivars and harvest moistures. Tests on seedling elongation, seedling emergence through sand (2 cm and 5 cm depth), and ion leakage were applied to evaluate grain vigour. Groat weight, diameter, length, roundness, hardness and protrusion of embryo were determined.Our results indicated that naked cultivars were far more prone to mechanical damages than husked Salo, but differences among naked cultivars in susceptibility occurred. When targeting germination of [ges ] 75%, grain moisture at harvest should not exceed 19–26% depending on cultivar. Abnormal seedlings appeared irrespective of grain moisture at harvest, but the higher the grain moisture, more dead grains were found in harvested grains after storage. Seed vigour did not alter parallel to germination ability. High proportion of small grains in harvested yield and softer groats contributed to decreased sensitivity to mechanical damages.

Meat and bone meal (MBM) is a by-product of the meat industry and is an important pathway for recycling of N and P. MBM contains about 8% N, 5% P, 1% K and 10% Ca. Field trials compared the effects of MBM and mineral fertilizer on yield and quality of sugar beet (2008-2009) and carrot (2010-2011) in Finland. MBM fertilisation of sugar beet grown on clay loam and sandy clay soil gave 11.4% (2008) and 19.6% (2009) lower yields than mineral fertilizers. The lower root yield in 2008 was compensated by higher extractable sugar content and lower amino-N, K and Na in root but no such compensation in root quality was detected for 2009. Mixing MBM with mineral NPK fertilizers had similar effects as MBM-alone. MBM (80 kg N ha(-1) 2010 and 60 kg N ha(-1) 2011) together with K fertilizer (Patentkali (R), 180 kg K ha(-1)) were applied for carrot to a fine sandy till soil in 2010 and sandy loam in 2011. MBM alone gave 14% lower total and marketable root yield than mineral fertilization. The lower yield was compensated by improved quality, lower NO3- content in the carrot and good storability. Adding extra fertilizer during growth or separating fertilization applications had no effect on root yield or quality. MBM performed in these cases mainly as an organic N fertilizer. The N supply from MBM is not sufficient for achieving same yields as with mineral fertilizers. The relative N efficiency of total N of MBM was 83% that of mineral fertilizers. MBM should be targeted on soils with low P status. We conclude that MBM is a reasonably competitive alternative to mineral fertilizers, and as a recycled fertilizer it is a good option for organic production.
