PurposeAlthough the number of studies that investigate supply chain sustainability learning has increased, little is known about the way sub-suppliers build knowledge and learn sustainability practices. Thus, moving beyond merely investigating the accumulation of knowledge, this research explores sub-suppliers’ knowing that supports the learning of sustainability practices in a multi-tiered food supply chain.Design/methodology/approachIn the conduct of this interpretive research in South Brazil, two ethnographies were completed during 74 days of observations to understand similarities and differences between certified and non-certified sub-suppliers with respect to sustainability practices. As part of our research conducted in the context of poultry production, secondary data and data gathered through semi-structured interviews with representatives of the buyer and first-tier supplier firms were used to provide a better comprehension of the multi-tiered supply chain context. Then, we executed an interpretive textual analysis.FindingsOur investigation explored six vignettes to reveal ways of learning sustainability practices in terms of waste management, biosecurity and animal welfare. Although the buyer firm requested these practices, we noted that the first-tier supplier was responsible for translating the practices to sub-suppliers. Moreover, we found that sustainability learning was shaped by the sub-supplier context embodied in knowledge through knowing. The ways of learning were related to sharing knowledge between experts and novices with the support of material practices; however, knowledge was also gained by unlearning some knowledge shared by the supplier. Sustainability practice learning, thus, was performed in a space of learning via knowledge creation among practitioners.Practical implicationsRecognising how sustainability learning happens in a multi-tiered supply chain context can help managers to develop plans to implement sustainability practices that will broaden their sustainability knowledge.Originality/valueUnlike previous studies on supply chain sustainability learning, we reveal ways that sustainability practices emerge from knowledge that results from sub-suppliers’ knowing. We also explain how unlearning can consciously occur in several situations of sustainability learning.

PurposeThe metaverse development is in the early stages in most organizations and supply chains. There has been exponential growth in metaverse investments by leading tech and other types of companies and governments worldwide. This article aims to shed light on the topic by providing detailed insights for the operations and supply chain management (O&SCM) community concerning the potential, opportunities and challenges associated with the metaverse.Design/methodology/approachThe authors mapped 15 benefits and 15 challenges regarding metaverse in O&SCM-related fields from the literature, which in turn were empirically tested by a panel with 150 experts from more than 12 countries, from operations and supply chains and with experience in metaverse technologies.FindingsThe authors found notable similarities and differences between metaverse adopters and non-adopters in the O&SCM. Accordingly, some benefits and challenges are expected before and after the implementation, but it's still relevant. In contrast, there are ones that change their importance after the implementation.Research limitations/implicationsFirst, this paper points out the need for an urgent call for action to develop high-quality research on the interplay between metaverse and O&SCM. Second, the metaverse will reshape several established business models by offering new products and services, consequently resulting in the remodeling of O&SCM. Third, our paper provides a call for action to engage the community of scholars and practitioners to consider the metaverse as one of the last frontiers of O&SCM in the digital age.Originality/valueThis paper is one of the first that investigates the metaverse benefits, challenges and expectations in the O&SCM. Also, it provides robust directions by an empirical approach to the metaverse as a new and important research stream for O&SCM and related fields. The authors provide a prospective research agenda that scholars and practitioners could use as a roadmap to capture metaverse opportunities in O&SCM.

PurposePeace engineering and compassionate operations can unlock the potential of emerging technologies for social good. This work aims to investigate the integration of peace engineering and compassionate operations by proposing an integrative framework and identifying the main drivers regarding social good, considering the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) landscape.Design/methodology/approachThe authors used a two-stage methodology by employing a narrative literature review in the first stage to identify the relationships and drivers and propose an original framework. In the second stage, the authors utilized an expert panel to validate the framework’s drivers.FindingsThe authors identified five main categories related to peace engineering and compassionate operations, which were then used to support the categorization of the drivers. In the second stage, the authors validated the drivers with a panel of academicians and experienced industry practitioners.Practical implicationsThe proposed framework can provide insightful directions for practitioners and governments to develop strategies and projects in different contexts, including humanitarian logistics, climate change crises, supply chain disruptions, etc.Originality/valueThis work makes unique contributions by reinvigorating an amalgamation of the peace engineering and compassionate operations arenas and their integration with the SDGs to enable enhanced social good, supported by cutting-edge technologies. Thus, this framework’s contributions encompass essential theoretical, managerial, and social implications.

PurposeThe aim of this study is to identify and analyse the main strategic differences between fast and ultra-fast fashion supply chain management.Design/methodology/approachThis study uses a qualitative approach, using document analysis and in-depth interviews with industry specialists.FindingsUltra-fast fashion differs from fast in the following supply chain strategies: avoids any excess inventory, focuses on local manufacturing, on-demand production, and shorter lead times from a few days to a week with a combination of agile, lean, responsive supply chain strategies.Research limitations/implicationsThe limitations of this research are due to the cut-off period and the use of a restricted sample. As implications, technological capabilities are underexplored in the fashion industry. Although important to the traditional and fast fashion industry, technology is viewed as a tool and not as a capability that can generate competitive advantage. This paper addresses technology as capabilities to make ultra-fast fashion retailers more competitive.Practical implicationsUltra-fast fashion could potentially impact current fast fashion retailers to partially move their business model and operations towards an ultra-fast approach. Fast fashion retailers desiring to speed up their production processes launch more weekly collections to cater to consumers who are more fashion-conscious.Originality/valueThere is a rapid emergence of new start-ups that are calling themselves ultra-fast. Newcomers wanting to adopt this new segment’s business model, develop technological capabilities to meet the challenges of this supercompetitive market.

PurposeThe Industry 4.0 phenomenon is bringing unprecedented disruptions for all traditional business models and hastening the need for a redesign and digitisation of activities. In this context, the literature concerning the digital supply chain (DSC) and its capabilities are in the early stages. To bridge this gap, the purpose of this paper is to propose a framework for digital supply chain capabilities (DSCCs).Design/methodology/approachThis paper uses a narrative literature approach, based on the main Industry 4.0 elements, supply chain and the emerging literature concerning DSC disruptions, to build an integrative framework to shed light on DSCCs.FindingsThe study identifies seven basic capabilities that shape the DSCC framework and six main enabler technologies, derived from 13 propositions.Research limitations/implicationsThe proposed framework can bring valuable insights for future research development, although it has not been tested yet.Practical implicationsManagers, practitioners and all involved in the digitalisation phenomenon can utilise the framework as a starting point for other business digitalisation projects.Originality/valueThis study contributes to advancing the DSC literature, providing a well-articulated discussion and a framework regarding the capabilities, as well as 13 propositions that can generate valuable insights for other studies.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify how the relationship between inbound logistics (IL) activities and elements of resilience (EoR) can contribute to organisational resilience. Design/methodology/approach Two in-depth case-based studies were conducted in the dairy industry. After identifying EoR and IL activities through a systematic literature review, relationships among them have been empirically discussed in six groups (emerged content analysis results): supplier and response capability; transportation; security; quick response to disruption; logistics management; trust and knowledge. Findings A framework was developed describing the contribution of these six groups to organisational resilience by highlighting and discussing three aspects: rigidity of the hierarchy, type of relationship and geographical dispersion. These aspects emerged from the process of content analysis and are related to the companies’ characteristics. Practical implications The proposed framework can assist managers to decide which group of EoR and IL activities they should prioritise, depending on the company’s characteristics and needs. Originality/value Although some studies have discussed the IL contribution to generating resilience in companies, none of them have explored in detail the relationship between EoR and IL activities, and their contribution to organisational resilience. The proposed framework shows the contribution of the EoR to three different organisational aspects.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate overlaps, complementarities and divergences between the literature on circular economy (CE) models and related literature in non-linear production models and frameworks, including CE, reverse logistics, closed-loop, industrial symbiosis and industrial ecology. Design/methodology/approach A systematic literature review was conducted focussing on the benefits of non-linear modes adoption. Findings The results show a high degree of convergence in findings, gaps and weaknesses of these literatures. Negative environmental, economic and operational impacts are understudied. There is a scarcity of studies identifying practices resulting in empirically tested benefits. The business and society case for non-linear production is still largely built upon conceptual studies, modelling and a few case studies. Despite a normative focus, there is very little use of theory, in particular, management theories. Research limitations/implications First, the authors use only one, albeit highly recognized database, Scopus. This database may have omitted some relevant research, journals such as the Journal of Cleaner Production and Resources Conservation & Recycling that are more likely to publish such research and also have a more interdisciplinary approach. This is an important gap and interesting result to claim for more interdisciplinary research. Second, the filtering process used and the focus on Association of Business Schools top journals may have also omitted some relevant research, such as a large stream of literature in specialist journals such as Resources Conservation and Recycling and the Journal of Cleaner Production. Practical implications There are contradictions, tensions and epistemological ambiguity that needs to be critically addressed. Such tensions may be associated with the knowledge field that gave rise to these different non-linear production approaches. Many of them appeared at the same time, but from different sciences and disciplines with their own perspectives. Then in doing so, they create confusion in the definitions of CE, assumptions underlying modelling and business choices arising from this complexity. This can be minimized through the critical interpretation of knowledge to elucidate epistemological quandaries to improve the understanding of the economic, social and environmental impacts of practices. Social implications In some way, this result makes sense, as the authors have limited the search to management, business and accounts journals, especially talking about Operations Management journals. This is an important gap and interesting result to claim for more interdisciplinary research. Originality/value In addition to gaps previously described, the authors identified areas of tensions where the literature offers inconclusive – often contradictory – findings requiring further exploration. A better understanding of these tensions is required to understand the impacts of non-linear production and develop policy guidelines for industry and policymakers to scale-up CE.

This work is framed by the search for sustainable supply chain success through new approaches of operational excellence. By applying certain characteristics of Upper Echelons Theory in the context of the circular economy, this study analyzes critical success factors for the adoption of the circular economy using focal companies selected from both emerging (Brazil) and mature (Scotland) economies. Thus, this study relates to the maturity level of circular economy adoption, how well companies manage critical success factors, and the influence of selected characteristics of firms’ upper echelons in promoting the circular economy. After conducting two exploratory case studies in Brazil and Scotland, as well as exploring the suitability of four research propositions, this work suggests that: (i) among the firms studied, companies that are more proactive towards the circular economy also demonstrate better management of critical success factors; (ii) based on these cases, companies that are less proactive in terms of the circular economy tend to face greater challenges and tensions due to unmanaged critical success factors; (iii) among the companies studied, those that are most proactive in terms of the circular economy tend to have top management who are more supportive of sustainability; (iv) certain top management characteristics in the companies studied, such as formal sustainability education and understanding of national sustainability strategy, are revealed to be relevant to the adoption of circular economy initiatives; and finally, (v) while our study shows that the theory behind the circular economy and critical success factors for promoting circular production systems have been developing separately, the integration of these important topical issues currently remains scarce.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate how resilience at different nodes in the supply chain influences overall supply chain resilience (SCRES) during an extreme weather event.Design/methodology/approachBased on 41 in-depth interviews, this qualitative study examines two Brazilian agri-food supply chains (AFSC). The interviews explored the impacts, preparedness, response and adaptation strategies adopted by farmers, processors and manufacturers during Brazil’s extreme drought of 2014–2015.FindingsSCRES does not depend on all organizations in the supply chain but rather on the company able to reconfigure the resources to control for the disruption. In a supply chain with low interdependence among players, individual firm resilience elements might be preferable to interorganizational ones.Research limitations/implicationsThis study is based on the context of AFSCs with low interdependence among players and during the experience of a climatic event. The results might not be generalizable to other sectors and phenomena.Practical implicationsFirms must evaluate their positions in supply chains and their interfirm relationships to determine which resilience strategy to invest in and rely on. Moreover, to leverage resilience at the supply chain level, firms must intensify information sharing and improve proactive resilience strategies upstream as well as downstream in the supply chain.Originality/valueThis study presents a broader perspective of resilience by comparing resilience elements at both the node and supply chain levels and by discussing their interactions and trade-offs.

University-industry collaborations create socioeconomic impacts for the areas where they are undertaken. Although these collaborations have recognized importance and a high potential to generate economic and social benefits, there is no consensus in the literature on a consolidated conceptual model for assessing their socioeconomic impacts. Given this scenario, this study reviews 94 studies on the socioeconomic impact of university-industry collaborations using a context- intervention-mechanism-outcomes configuration. The impacts identified in the systematic literature review are classified into: (1) economic, (2) social, and (3) financial. The systematic literature review also indicates that the impact of collaborations can change the context and enhance the mechanisms of technology transfer. From a theoretical viewpoint, this work contributes to the structuring of a conceptual model for assessing the socioeconomic impacts of university-industry collaborations. In addition, the results have contributions for management in each strand of the triple helix: they may be useful to guide universities and companies on how to assess the socioeconomic impacts of each collaboration, direct public agents in the evaluation of results of investments, and support the development of policies for innovation and technology managementd

A economia circular aumentou a sua capacidade de atrair a atenção de pesquisadores, gestores e governos. A disseminação do conceito, por vezes, está associada ao uso de alguns termos técnicos da nova revolução industrial como sendo sinônimos. Mas realmente são sinônimos? São complementares? São práticas diferentes? Para ajudar a esclarecer essa confusão de conceitos que ocorre tanto na academia quanto na prática empresarial, este artigo apresenta diretrizes conceituais sobre importantes termos relacionados à economia circular. O objetivo do estudo consiste em esclarecer as diferenças semânticas e conceituais dos termos: economia circular, economia espiral, cradle to cradle, double loop, closed-loop, logística reversa, análise do ciclo de vida, upcycle e simbiose industrial. A contribuição do estudo está alicerçada na categorização da literatura sobre o tema economia circular e seus termos correlatos, assim como na proposição de traduções para termos clássicos da área de operações. Compreender as definições conceituais e suas origens é essencial para desenvolver o conhecimento na área, bem como a sua difusão.

Purpose This study aims to analyze the media coverage of the impact of extreme weather events (EWE) and related risk management activities in Brazil. Design/methodology/approach Using a documentary analysis, the authors examined the media coverage of droughts and floods from 2003 to 2013 with concomitant official reports. Findings The results indicate that although media coverage conveys the direct impact of floods and droughts on society, it underemphasizes the importance of risk management activities. Moreover, the private sector rarely engages in risk management and mitigation activities, despite the documented supply chain disruptions. Research limitations/implications This study focuses solely on media coverage as provided by wide-circulation newspaper in Brazil and would benefit by being extended to all media platforms. Practical implications The results highlight the need for private sector involvement in risk management activities to facilitate the adaptation to climate change. Social implications The study reveals the deficiency of existing reports and lack of awareness regarding EWE. Originality/value The study contributes by focusing on climate awareness and how society can adapt to climate change, as well as how businesses can improve supply chain operations to facilitate smoother risk management.

In the face of natural disasters, companies attempt to maintain the sustainability of their business by implementing an appropriate set of organisational practices. Based on the practice-based view of strategic management, this paper aims to identify intra- and inter-organisational supply chain practices that help focal companies in the cashew nut supply chain in Brazil respond to natural disasters. To this end, three in-depth, qualitative case studies informed by semi-structured interviews and secondary data were conducted in Brazil. The data were analysed using qualitative content analysis supported by NVivo software and based on an analytic framework that links resources and practices to performance in a natural disaster context. The findings indicate that companies embark on different trajectories depending on the resources and practices they deploy in response to natural disasters. While one company demonstrated a negative performance due to competitive inertia and low productivity, two companies maintained and increased their performance results based on inter-organisational collaboration. Findings demonstrate that responding to natural disasters requires companies to reorganise their strategies towards sustainability and to develop new practices such as food safety, organic production and social responsibility.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2018-07-01 In light of the Theory of Ecological Modernisation, this is the first work to explore the organisational barriers affecting one of the most significant sustainable public procurement initiatives in Latin America: the Brazilian Environmental Agenda for Public Operations Management (the 'A3P Programme'). This article explores the barriers to sustainable procurement in a Brazilian context, inspired by the work of Brammer and Walker (2011). Based on the results of a survey of programme managers, our first recommendation is to group the barriers to sustainable procurement into five categories: organisational culture, motivation, economic uncertainty, market, and operations. Amongst these, it was found that organisational culture stands out as a particular barrier to sustainable public procurement. This work also highlights Ecological Modernisation Theory as a useful tool for understanding why variables related to cost and budget are not barriers to implementing sustainable public procurement initiatives. Consequently, the main implication of this study is that government should consider cultural change management when developing sustainability management initiatives. The purpose is to present a literature review of humanitarian operations/supply chain/logistic based on bibliometric methods for mapping this field of research. Software was used to construct maps and bibliometric networks. The science mapping approach is useful for providing quick identification of main research topics and clusters.

This research aims to find out how SCRM publication has evolved and if risk sources have followed it. The applied methodology was systematic review. The findings indicate the increase of complexity in SC. In the same way, risk source changes as long as new disruptions and information are considered.

This paper provides a circular supply chain perspective of packaging recovery ecosystems being implemented by Tetra Pak, a prime global player in the food packaging industry, in two major emerging economies: China and Brazil. The circular supply chain archetype considered in the research allowed a consistent comparative analysis of Tetra Pak’s circular supply chains in both countries. Through a case study approach, the research provides theoretical propositions and learning points that are valuable for academics and practitioners interested in the Chinese and Brazilian markets as well as in the supply chains supporting recovery ecosystems in the packaging industry. In particular, the distinct environments in the Chinese and Brazilian markets render Tetra Pak opportunities to design circular supply chains in different ways showing adaptation and learning to local market characteristics. The industrial perspectives from these emerging economies add to the contributions offered in the paper. Overall, the conceptual considerations and practical recommendations presented in the paper provide useful insights for the development of further studies and implementation of industrial practices advocated by the circular economy.

The aim of our study was to evaluate thermophilic Campylobacter frequency in quails at slaughterhouse level in two subsequent years. Campylobacter isolates were evaluated for their antibiotics resistance ability, looking for multidrug resistance. Their genetic diversity assessment was performed by pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) in order to establish possible relationships among different flocks and producers. This study highlights the high frequency (81–94%) and antimicrobial resistance of Campylobacter spp. in commercial quails. Campylobacter coli were dominant with a high frequency of resistance for fluoroquinolones, tetracycline and ampicillin among all the quail flocks and producers. C. coli strains with the same genetic profile isolated in samples from different flocks and producers, and collected in different slaughtering days, suggest the existence of common risk factors at production level in a vertically integrated enterprise. Strains' low genetic diversity with the prevalence of a single pulsotype among producers, might suggest that quails have been submitted continuously to the same therapeutics, which induced selectivity due to antibiotic stress pressure. C. coli contaminated quails might act as a source that increases consumer's exposure to multidrug-resistant isolates.

Resumo O tema da estruturação de redes de suprimentos, observado à luz da cooperação entre empresas, tem sido estudado como forma de entender como as empresas participantes de uma rede de suprimentos podem se inserir com mais chances de posicionamento competitivo dentro de um novo ambiente de negócios complexo e dotado de rápidas mudanças. O objetivo desta pesquisa é analisar o comportamento de atributos considerados importantes na construção de relacionamento colaborativo em redes, partindo do pressuposto de que este relacionamento favorece a competitividade interna das empresas e da sua rede. O estudo é realizado a partir da análise de práticas de relacionamentos existentes na indústria de construção naval (ICN) no Brasil, considerando os princípios colaborativos propostos na teoria e o contexto da indústria analisada. As análises são baseadas nas respostas de 196 empresas respondentes de umasurvey aplicada a um total de 1.160 empresas identificadas, localizadas em todo o país. Através da técnica de Análise Fatorial, foram selecionadas 15 variáveis que explicam os relacionamentos colaborativos nessa rede, sendo obtida a simplificação destas em cinco componentes principais, aqui agrupados e denominados como mecanismos ou práticas dequalidade, de inovação, deconfiança, de proximidade e deprodutividade. Embora os componentes principais expliquem a estrutura latente do comportamento dessas empresas, a frequência relativa percentual sugere que a existência destes atributos na cadeia analisada ainda é incipiente. Abstract The structuring of supply networks, observed in the context of cooperation among companies, has been studied as a means to understand how the participating companies in a supply network can be integrated within a new business environment, endowed with a complex system and rapidly changing with more competitive positioning chances. The objective of this research is to analyze the behavior of the attributes considered to be important in building collaborative relationships in networks, assuming that this relationship promotes the internal competitiveness of the companies and their network. The study is performed by analyzing the practices of the existing relationships in the shipbuilding industry (ICN) in Brazil, considering the collaborative principles proposed in the theory and the analyzed industry context. The analyses are based on the responses of 196 reporting companies of a survey applied to 1,160 companies identified, located all over the country. Through a Factor Analysis, 15 variables were selected to explain the collaborative relationships in that network. Those variables were simplified to five main components, grouped according to mechanisms or practices of quality, innovation, trust, closeness and productivity. Although the principal components explain the latent structure of the behavior of these firms, the relative percentage frequency suggests that the existence of these attributes in the analyzed chain is still incipient.

Este artigo tem por objetivo investigar o impacto dos mecanismos de socialização na criação de valor no relacionamento cliente-fornecedor. Desenvolvido a partir da visão relacional e dos mecanismos de socialização, argumenta-se que o relacionamento cliente-fornecedor pode impactar positivamente a cadeia de suprimentos. Foi adotado o método de pesquisa Survey, desenvolvida com 91 executivos de Compras e Supply Chain no Brasil, e a amostra foi analisada utilizando o modelo de equações estruturais. A principal contribuição desta pesquisa é a presença de baixas evidências empíricas, indicando que o capital relacional está associado a altos níveis de ganhos. This paper aims to investigate the impact of socialization mechanisms for value creation in buyer-supplier relationships. Drawing upon relational view and socialization mechanisms, it is argued that the buyer-supplier relationship can provide positive outcomes for its supply chain. Structural Equation Modeling performed on data collected from Purchasing and Supply Chain Executives indicates that both formal and informal socialization mechanisms positively impact the level of relational capital of supply chain. The main contribution presented by this research is the non-strong empirical evidence, indicating that relational capital is associated with higher levels of earnings for firms.

O objetivo do estudo foi analisar o alinhamento nas estratégias de suprimento adotadas pelos elos nas cadeias de suprimentos da indústria automobilística no Brasil. O conceito de alinhamento seguido foi aquele proposto por Vachon et al. (2009), de que o alinhamento se relaciona com a intensidade dos gaps entre os requisitos de um cliente e a ênfase dada por um fornecedor de primeira camada nestes mesmos requisitos ao lidar com os fornecedores de segunda camada. A unidade de análise são empresas industriais localizadas no Brasil, fornecedores de primeira camada de montadoras de automóveis. A amostra de vinte e oito empresas foi selecionada por critério de acessibilidade, a partir de uma relação de empresas do setor disponibilizada pelo Sindipeças, o principal sindicato patronal da categoria. As unidades de observação foram os gestores da área de suprimentos dessas empresas. Os resultados apontam que a dependência de um fornecedor em relação a uma montadora específica reforça o alinhamento estratégico nesta cadeia de suprimentos, e que as montadoras europeias possuem uma base de fornecedores diretos que adotam estratégias de suprimentos mais alinhadas com as suas próprias, quando comparadas com as montadoras norteamericanas e respectivas bases de fornecedores. No entanto, as cadeias se desalinham quando prevalece a adoção de práticas colaborativas nas relações entre montadoras e primeira camada de fornecedores. This study evaluates the degree of strategic alignment in the supply strategies adopted by the Brazilian automotive supply chains. The concept of alignment followed was that proposed by Vachon et al. (2009), that alignment is related to the intensity of the gaps between the requirements of a client and an emphasis on first-tier supplier in these same requirements when dealing with suppliers second tier. The unit of analysis are companies located in Brazil, first-tier suppliers to automobile manufacturers. The sample of twenty-eight companies were selected by criteria of accessibility, provided by SINDIPEÇAS. The units of observation were their supply managers. The results pointed that, the stronger the bonds between the automaker and its suppliers are, higher is the degree of alignment in the adopted supply strategies. Furthermore, European automakers supply chains have higher levels of strategic alignment compared to North-American automakers ones. However, the supply chains characterized by lower levels of strategic alignment are the ones where collaborative practices prevail in the relations. El objetivo de este estudio fue examinar el alineamiento de las estrategias adoptadas por relaciones de suministro en cadenas de suministro de la industria automotriz en Brasil. El concepto de alineación que siguió fue la propuesta por Vachon et al. (2009), que la alineación se refiere a la intensidad de las diferencias entre los requisitos del cliente y el énfasis dado por un proveedor de primer nivel de estos mismos requisitos cuando se trata de proveedores de segundo nivel. La unidad de análisis son las empresas ubicadas en Brasil, proveedores de primer nivel a los fabricantes de automóviles. La muestra de veintiocho empresas fueron seleccionadas por criterios de accesibilidad, de una lista de las empresas del sector proporcionada por Sindipeças, el sindicato patronal principal. Las unidades de observación fueron los gestores de estas empresas de la zona de suministro. Los resultados muestran que la dependencia de un único proveedor para un fabricante específico refuerza el alineamiento estratégico en esa cadena de suministro, y los fabricantes europeos tienen una base de proveedores directos que adoptan estrategias para la oferta más acorde con sus propios, en comparación con los fabricantes de automóviles de EE.UU. y sus bases de proveedores. PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to characterize and discuss the collaborative network formed by researchers that published about services in the top journals in Operations, Marketing, and Human Resources Management, and provide further comparison with major Service journals.Design/methodology/approachThe method used was designed documentary research using papers published in the top three relevant international journals specific to Operations, Marketing, and Human Resources from 1995 to 2010. Papers were selected using a search of the ABI/Inform Global (Proquest) database on the word “service” in the title, abstract, or keywords. Additionally, it included two major Service journals. A total of 1,481 papers and 2,457 authors composed the Social Network Analysis (SNA).FindingsThe co‐authorship network revealed that the social structure is highly fragmented. However, its main component can be classified as “small world”, indicating that authors are connected to others outside their group through a small number of intermediaries. This type of structure is favorable both to knowledge flow and development.Practical implicationsThe results may be valuable to the community of researchers interested in the theme of Services, as well as in the fields of Operations, Marketing, and Human Resources to identify researchers and research groups. Thus, it can serve as guidance for publishers, colleges, and companies in the search for scholars in the service subject.Originality/valueThe paper uses SNA to investigate the interaction/collaboration of co‐authors using authorship as the unit of analysis.

The drought in the sugarcane-energy supply chain of São Paulo occurred between 2014 and 2015 was the phenomenon observed in this case study whose starting point was the following question: how can collaboration bring on resilience in supply chains experiencing a disaster? Deductive qualitative approach has empirically contributed to the knowledge of possible disruptions focused on the agribusiness. For those purposes, aspects involving vertical (suppliers, focal company and buyers) and horizontal (NGOs, government, research centers, focal company and their competitors) collaboration was analyzed among the links of the chain (triad: farmers, processers and buyers). Vertical collaboration between buyers and focal company, if compared to that of focal company and suppliers (the weakest link) is more significant. The findings in this study, however, should be considered solely within the context of the supply chain analyzed once new researches in different cultures of the agribusiness, regions and types of disasters have yet to be done.

This research seeks to understand how the capability of flexibility manifests itself for the formation of resilience in service supply chains. The survey was conducted through a single case study of a hospital chain that was impacted by the H1N1 pandemic in 2009. This analyzed chain was formed by the hospital, doctors, nurses, the Ministry of Health, State Secretary of Health of Sao Paulo and the pharmaceutical industry. The aim of this study was to analyse the strategies of operations, specifically sustainable and circular economy operations and their effect on the performance of organisations. The study sample included 304 enterprises in this industrial sector in southern Brazil. The results show that sustainable operations and performance are variables that move together in the same direction. Furthermore, regression analysis indicates that the model is useful in predicting the performance of organisations, as the p value of the F test is less than 0.05. However, operations strategy explains only 4% of performance variability. Other variables must be entered to improve the explanatory power of the analysis regarding the performance of the organisations surveyed. This finding is relevant because it shows that the sustainability investments do not always imply performance improvement. Furthermore, the performance of the company is not explained by political correctness, especially when the sample studied has a predominance of small and medium enterprises.

The research objective is verifying the strategic alignment of supply practices between automakers and suppliers in the Brazilian automotive supply chains. It makes an exploratory-descriptive study of objectives, using quantitative/qualitative procedures and inductive reasoning. The concept used for analyzing the alignment of practices was based on Vachon et al. (2009). The main conclusion of this study is that suppliers and automakers seem to align their supply strategy, giving support to a desirable situation of single chain project. The subsidiary conclusion is the lack of relationship between intensity of the link and misalignment in these companies. The main contributions are the analysis of the relationship established in tiers that are the furthest removed from the focal companies; identification of practices that support the expansion of a new model of arrangements implemented by automakers in Brazil; and understanding of the processes that companies have adopted in order to manage their supply chains and the implications of these activities for the competitiveness of both the company and the supply chain as a whole.

The shipbuilding industry is characterized overall by make-to-order production, based on the mobilization of many suppliers for one final product’s construction. Moreover, this industry presents a global nature, because its strategic position is defined by its global position (Cho & Porter, 1986). The shipbuilding industry faces a new wave of competition, due to demand from countries for their own national fleets, the increasing growth of exports and, as a consequence, the use of naval transport as added value to foreign commerce. In this preliminary investigation, we seek to find out if local conditions favor the retaking of this industry within a country, which in turn raises another question: how should the local suppliers become interconnected so that the shipbuilding industry can become competitive globally? This study identifies types of relationship and practices adopted by the shipbuilding industry in Brazil, in order to contribute to supply network structuring based on key-suppliers’ capabilities and cooperation between players.

Este estudo analisa a rede de pesquisadores que publicam no campo de Gestão de Operações no Brasil, baseando-se em 2.668 artigos publicados entre 1997 a 2009. As hipóteses do estudo são referenciadas na literatura de redes sociais e de avaliação de campos científicos. Os resultados apontam que, apesar da existência de uma rede fragmentada e pouco densa, há grupos coesos e próximos que dão estabilidade ao campo (redes small worlds). Verificou-se que o número de laços do pesquisador (centralidade de grau) está positivamente associado ao número de artigos publicados, embora afete negativamente sua produtividade. Quando consideramos os laços não redundantes (structural holes), os resultados se mostraram positivos e significativos tanto para a produção quanto para a produtividade. Ademais, observou-se ainda que a centralidade do pesquisador modera o efeito dos laços não redundantes, sendo seu efeito sobre a produtividade maior entre pesquisadores com maior grau de centralidade.

A necessidade de formar novos arranjos com foco na eficiencia coletiva induz as organizacoes a uma inter-relacao que requer cooperacao e compartilhamento de informacoes. Sao os arranjos inter-organizacionais, um fenomeno que pode ser analisado tanto pelo aspecto operacional das tecnologias de gestao quanto pelo processo do relacionamento entre os diversos participantes que encontram-se interligados, destacando-se os novos padroes de cooperacao e competicao entre eles. O foco desse trabalho e a analise das praticas de fornecedores na Industria Naval Brasileira, com o objetivo de contribuir com a proposicao de novos modelos organizacionais que favorecam a competitividade dessa industria. Ha indicativos que nos fazem acreditar na existencia de competitividade a nivel global, uma vez que muitos dos respondentes atendem ao mercado internacional. We shed light on the relationship between environmental investments and cost performance by adding two moderators: host country and technological capabilities. We combined data from a global survey and the World Economic Forum (WEF). We analyzed 1045 observations gathered from plants in 22 countries and 22 industries. We assessed the validity and reliability of the measures using confirmatory factor analysis, and we tested our hypothesis with hierarchical multiple regression. We found that environmental investments and cost performance were positively related only in innovation-driven economies. Moreover, in plants located in such countries, the stock of technological capabilities in the plant positively moderates the environmental investment- cost performance relationship.
